We can honestly say that this year’s April winds will certainly have shaken, what Shakespeare called, “the darling buds of May”.

A

pril has seen one warm day of sunshine followed by hail stones and freezing temperatures the next. Roll on summertime!

However, many people this year seem not so bothered about the weather, but rather just how wonderful life will become once this lockdown is over. At the time of writing, it’s touch and go whether the hairdressers will be able to cope with the accumulations of lopped locks of hair, or whether our pub gardens will be anything like big enough for everyone clamouring for that first “out of lockdown drink”.

Whatever it is that you have been longing for these last few months, let’s hope that it can come your way and that we can all make the most of the improvements to come, especially with the weather!

It’s with great sadness that we have to report on the passing of well-known Fenland historian and author Trevor Bevis. Trevor was a regular contributor to Discovering March magazine but was also known and respected throughout the wider Fenland area for his articles and books looking back at the history of the area.

I know that his articles were greatly enjoyed and respected by readers and I would like to pass on the condolences of everyone connected with the magazine to his family.

Fenland District Council has paid tribute to His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, who died last month aged 99.

I was actually fortunate enough to be introduced to the Duke at Sandringham when I edited a national magazine and was also due to sit next to him at a Duke of Edinburgh Awards’ lunch.

However, on the day it was announced that his place would be taken by Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, which was definitely a less nerve-wracking experience…

MAY GARDENING TIPS

ay has a habit of throwing a variety of adverse weather conditions at the gardener and you may have to protect young seedlings from the possibility of a late frost or make sure they are well watered if we don’t have the rain.

Take care to harden off plants that have been grown indoors or under cover before planting. A cheap way to protect tender young plants is to use “bottle cloches” by cutting down the two-litre plastic drinks bottles; they are useful for protecting young runner beans and peas. Also hold back on planting out seeds at the beginning of the month as sometimes they are planted too early; the ground may be too wet or cold and they fail to germinate.

This month sees more pests appearing: aphids, slugs and snails will all be out in force so, in order to repel them...

•

Peppermint, spearmint and pennyroyal naturally deter aphids and ants, so plant (or put them in pots) throughout the vegetable plot.

• Plant flowers that attract the pest predators, such as marigold and nasturtiums.

• Stir together one quart of water, one tsp of washing-up liquid and a pinch of cayenne pepper and spray on the plants.

Some of us only set aside a small plot for growing fruit and vegetables so to maximise your space you can try: •

Intercropping – sowing two crops in the same row, one slow and one fast-growing. Fast-growing crops include Oriental salad leaves, lettuces, radishes, spring onions, spinach and spring-planted shallots. Slow-growers

are parsnips, sweetcorn, tomatoes, leeks, winter cabbage, cauliflower, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts. You can also sow the fast-growers when there is a gap between harvesting one crop and planting another.

• Catch Cropping – sowing a fast-growing crop in the brief period a plot might be empty.

Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous to list them all, but a few include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas.

Succession sowing ensures that you have a continual supply and not a glut of the same crop and is particularly good for salad crops which you need to cut and use immediately.

Indoors, you can sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines and cabbages and, towards the end of the month when the risk of frost has gone, they can be planted outdoors.

Other jobs to do this month include: • Earth up potatoes.

• Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage.

• Pot on growing plants.

• Put up bean and pea supports.

• Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year.

•

When watering young plants and seedlings, it is better to water less frequently but more thoroughly as this gets down to the roots.

• If in any doubt about the weather, cover young plants with fleece.

WHAT CHANGES WERE ANNOUNCED ON 'TAX DAY' THAT MIGHT AFFECT YOU?

Dubbed as ‘Tax Day’, HM Treasury released thirty documents and consultations on March 23rd as part of its tax policies and consultations update to inform future tax policies. These would normally be published on Budget day, but this year they were published separately in a what it says is a move to ‘strengthen policy making and modernise the UK tax system.’ Chris Goad, partner at Stephenson Smart’s March office, analyses the main announcements: Making Tax Digital Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT registered business with a turnover of more than £85,000 has been the first phase of what the Government hopes will become a new, digital way of working that will include all taxpayers reporting their income and expenses via digital software, in a more timely manner. With all VAT registered businesses needing to be MTD compliant from April 1st, 2022 and subsequently, businesses and landlords with trading income over £10,000 from April 1st, 2023, being the next phase of the ’ten -year strategy’.

Holiday Lets It is currently the case that many holiday lets in England are registered to pay business rates, rather than council tax, when an owner declares that they intend to let their property in the next year.

Disaster Averted

WITH A RUNAWAY LOCOMOTIVE

I

n hilly areas, the possibility of a train running away has always been present and safety procedures have been introduced to reduce this.

In the flat lands of the Fens, one would think this impossible. However, seventy-five years ago, in early 1946, a London & North Eastern Railway locomotive set off from March engine shed without anyone on the footplate.

There was brief reference to this incident in a local newspaper report. The late John Wood, a March footplate man, recalled that the engine was No. 2821 'Hatfield House' of the B17 express passenger class. Speculation suggests that No. 2821 had been under repair and, when this was complete, it would be necessary to relight the fire to raise steam before the engine returned to work.

Perhaps a combination of circumstances occurred to allow the engine to move off, for example the hand brakes not applied, the regulator valve not fully closed or leaky and the cylinder relief valves closed. Also, the engine could not have been hemmed in by any other locomotive.

The signalmen at Whitemoor Junction would have been surprised to see the engine approach without giving consent and seeing it pass with no crew.

However, they must have been able to alert their colleague at March West Junction, who also would have alerted the crossing keepers at Norwood Road, Wisbech Road, Whitemoor Road and Middle Drove by sending the appropriate bell signal 'Train Running Away on Right Line' as the engine set off towards Peterborough.

The locomotive's progress must have been quite slow as when the signalman at Black Drove just beyond Middle Drove crossing was alerted, he left his post and courageously managed to climb the footsteps into the engine cab and bring the

runaway to a halt. Another locomotive was sent out to tow errant No. 2821 back to the engine shed.

The B17 Steam Locomotive Trust is building a completely new example of this type of engine for the benefit of future generations. It is intended to run this new locomotive on both the main lines and heritage railways. ‘DEEP SADNESS’ AT THE DEATH OF THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH

The chairman of Fenland District Council has paid tribute to his Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, who has died aged 99.

Councillor Alex Miscandlon said: “On behalf of all the people of Fenland, I would like to express my deep sadness at the news of the death of The Duke of Edinburgh.

“I know that people throughout the district will share my great sorrow while at the same time feeling immense gratitude for his long life and service to the whole nation.

“While we mourn his death, we give thanks for his life and for the shining example that he has given of commitment, faithfulness and true Christian values. He has been loved and respected by all.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Her Majesty The Queen and all the Royal Family at this sad moment in our history.”

LOOKING BACK ON LOCAL ATHLETICS SCENE Long-time March athletics stalwart Peter Jackman has put together a publication looking back over his years connected with March Athletic Club.

Peter (pictured above) was the first chairman of the club when it was formed in 1976 and together with his wife and fellow athlete Gena has compiled a booklet of newspaper clippings featuring the exploits of many of the athletes who have taken part in the sport locally over the years.

TIME TO VOTE IN LOCAL ELECTIONS Local people will be taking to the polls on Thursday, May 6th to elect the Cambridgeshire Police and Crime Commissioner, the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority Mayor, Cambridgeshire County Council members and vote in five local by-elections to fill vacant parish, town and district council seats.

Polling stations will be open on polling day and Fenland District Council’s elections team is working hard to ensure they operate in a COVID secure way.

Electors will be asked to wear face coverings, unless exempt, sanitise their hands on entry, follow a one-way system, maintain social distancing and bring their own pen or pencil to cast their vote, although new pencils will be available if needed.

There will also be regular cleaning and queuing systems to control the number of people inside.

A Fenland District Council spokesperson said: “Elections are an opportunity to make your voice heard and have a democratic say on who represents you on local issues.

“Polling stations will be COVID secure and extra staff will be on hand to ensure safety measures are adhered to. But if people would rather not vote in person, we would urge them to apply for a post or proxy vote as soon as possible.”

FUNDS FOR FENLAND LEISURE CENTRES Fenland District Council has successfully secured a grant from Sport England’s National Leisure Recovery Fund to help support the reopening of the district’s four leisure centres.

The council will use the £224,500 grant to continue to support its leisure partner, Freedom Leisure, in providing a full range of sports and leisure activities to visitors as soon as coronavirus restrictions are lifted.

The grant is part of a much broader package of significant financial support that the council has provided Freedom Leisure since the beginning of the pandemic in March last year.

Cllr Sam Clark, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder for leisure, said: “Leisure centres play an important role in the health and wellbeing of our residents, so the council is extremely grateful that its application to the National Leisure Recovery Fund was successful.

“The council-owned leisure centres are excellent, well-loved facilities and the Freedom Leisure teams that run them work incredibly hard to make sure people can access a fantastic range of sports and leisure activities.

“We are confident that the reopening of centres will be met with support from local residents and, as restrictions continue to ease throughout the year, the centres will be expected to run a full service as they did prior to the pandemic.”

Ivan Horsfall-Turner, managing director at Freedom Leisure, added: “The last year has been a significant challenge for the leisure industry and our role in providing the local communities across Fenland with access to health, fitness and wellbeing opportunities has never been more important. The funding secured with Fenland District Council will help us to reopen and get back to delivering a vital service to their residents and visitors.”

“Chat over a cuppa” with Kim Cross

S

Kim grew up in Australia but has lived around Norfolk and Wisbech for about twelve years. Her husband is from Murrow and she has four children and two stepsons which makes Christmas an expensive time of year! he is also a solicitor and specialises in employment law, litigation and commercial work at Vine Law. Kim really enjoys working with small and medium-sized business, helping protect them and to grow. She is also a keen advocate of employee rights and fighting in the corner of anyone who has suffered discrimination at work.

For Kim, life is all about family and community. She comes from an exceptionally welcoming family and was exposed all through her childhood to travellers from other countries who would come and stay with her family at home.

Her dad was heavily involved in community and charity work, and before she retired, her mum was a teacher. All of this gave Kim a life-long love of learning and helping others.

Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood?

I was born in Australia and lived there until 2009 when I moved to the UK. My favourite memories

of childhood generally involve a pool or a beach. I spent a lot of time outside with my sisters and friends in the sunshine. I am still drawn to the water and couldn’t live far from the coast.

Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why?

My parents and family generally have greatly influenced the kind of person I am. I grew up in a house where the door was always open, where people were welcomed and invited in, and where nothing was too much trouble. It taught me to be curious about people, to be open, interested, tolerant and caring, and to have a strong

view on the importance of family and community.

Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why?

I would say Charles Dickens and Jane Austen if they could be transported to current day. It would be interesting to see what they would write about now.

How would you describe yourself in only five words?

Open, friendly, compassionate, determined (perhaps read stubborn) and extremely funny (in my opinion anyway!).

If there was one thing which you could change about March, what would it be and why?

It would be great to see the High Street pedestrianised, even perhaps just on market days.

The market could be expanded down the High Street and outdoor seating set out for the local eateries.

What advice would you give to a sixteen-year-old you?

Be kind to yourself and do not be afraid to take up space.

Act Now For Peace Of Mind Make life easier for you and your family in two easy steps.

As a lawyer dealing with wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney I hear two comments a lot. The first is “I know I ought to make a will” and the second “We really wanted Mum/Dad to sort out powers of attorney but they wouldn’t”.

By Cath Collins Wills: Most people know what a will is and why they ought to have one. At its simplest, your will sets out who you want to sort out your estate and how you want it divided after your death.

For some people, they know the who and the how and for them making a will doesn’t present a problem. For others, it can be more difficult and for them making a will can feel like climbing Mount Everest. They don’t know how to start, so they don’t.

Unfortunately, this can mean that those left behind have to follow rules that they know their deceased loved one wouldn’t have liked. The end result might be that the estate goes to someone that the deceased hadn’t seen for years, rather than those that supported them during their lifetime.

From my experience, the greatest gift you can give to those you leave behind is the peace of mind that they are doing what you would have wanted.

Lasting Powers of Attorney: A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) enables you to decide who is going to look after you and your finances if you aren’t able to do so.

Life expectancy is increasing and whilst some people are lucky enough to be able to live independently all their lives, many others find that they need a little bit of help to manage.

Sadly, by the time we need that help it may be too late to put an LPA in place. If you can’t tell anyone who you would like to look after your affairs, someone will need to make an application to the Court of Protection for permission to do so.

During the time the application is being dealt with by the Court of Protection, which can be up to a year, no-one is able to manage your finances. This could mean that your family might have to pay your bills or even pay for your care from their own resources until they can access your funds.

The best time to draw up Lasting Powers of Attorney is, as strange as it sounds, when you don’t need them.

You can take the time to decide who the best people are to help you to manage if you are struggling or to deal with things if you aren’t able to anymore.

As I said at the beginning of this article, it’s often the children who come to me when their parents are no longer able to manage their affairs saying they wanted them to set up LPAs, but they wouldn’t.

By putting in place Lasting Powers of Attorney and a will, you not only get the peace of mind that you will be looked after and your affairs will be sorted as you wanted after your death, but you also give the gift of peace of mind to those that will be looking after you and dealing with your estate.

Don’t Get Caught Out by the Letterbox Fraudsters

by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Imagine the scene... summer is just around the corner, lockdown continues to ease and you are ready to welcome friends and family for some alfresco dining or a garden gathering. But some of your property’s exterior is looking a little tired, your outdoor space 15:38 needs some “TLC” and you have good intentions of getting someone in for the job before welcoming visitors back into your home. And then, as luck would have it, a leaflet drops through your door with details of that landscaper, driveway professional or guttering replacement company you have been looking for.

However, all may not be as it seems. While many companies who ‘leaflet drop’ may be genuine, there are many rogue traders who use this method of advertising and their leaflets are getting very sophisticated. In fact, some are printing leaflets and including details of genuine companies to make themselves look honest and reputable.

The leaflet shown above, which was shared by the police, is a genuine company but the phone number was fake and was redirected to a mobile number.

The victims of this particular leaflet were mostly elderly, lured by the “special rates”.

“Each to their own”, as they say! Different wines appeal to different people, and the choices today are immense: red, white, something ‘pink’ or sparkling... For a short and uncomplicated selection, I found the following.

CHABLIS (12.5%vol) is a regular choice for many.

The Chablis region of France utilises grapes to great advantage. The resulting dry white wines are extremely popular and widely recognised around the world. I found Chablis wine to have an enticing bouquet of fresh citrus fruits. The mouthfeel leads to the palate’s appreciation and enjoyment, for a good, lengthy finish.

POUILLY-FUMÉ by Louis Dailly (14% vol) is a further favourite, for many white wine lovers. Some vineyards, in this area of France, have a history from the fifth century. This dry, Grand Vin De Bourgogne production, I found to be fresh, citrusy and very worthwhile locating.

CHAMPAGNE – Many connoisseurs’ choice, for countless generations. This exceptional, sparkling French wine delights at endless events, occasions and festivities, as well as being fabulous for pre38

dining experiences and by itself, too. I searched for a Champagne production, of excellent quality, at a price that would not ‘break the bank’.

Henri Cachet Champagne Brut (12% vol) has an abundance of fresh citrus fruit flavours. I found this production to be fruity, well-balanced and very pleasing. A most impressive wine and a great ‘find’.

BORSARI AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA (15% vol) is a rich and powerful red wine, that is regularly found on the ‘top table’. Valpolicella is located in the province of Verona, near Venice, Italy.

Ripe, dark fruits are evident for this superb production.

Elegant and balanced, the mouth’s pleasures extend through to the palate’s sensation, wonderfully, confirming further with the splendid finish.

I located these wines at an ‘Asda’ store, where I also found great value, award-winning productions, along with good advice from experienced staff. Furthermore, viewing the many, many wines, from different countries and also liqueurs and spirits, there is certainly something for everyone on these shelves. www.asda.com As always, enjoy!

These do well in containers, so you don’t even need much space – which is great news if you live in an apartment and only have a balcony or window ledge.

By Taking Regular COVID Tests

R

esidents in March are being urged to get twice-weekly rapid COVID tests.

The move is an important step forward to meet the aims of the national roadmap, allowing everyone to move safely out of lockdown.

Twice-weekly rapid testing is a vital tool in identifying cases of COVID-19 that would otherwise be missed.

With one in three people with coronavirus showing no symptoms and potentially spreading it without knowing, rapid testing helps to identify positive cases quickly, preventing the spread of infection.

There are several ways you can access rapid testing. You can take a test at one of the rapid testing sites locally. Your employer may be offering testing in the workplace.

You can also collect tests to complete at home or order tests to be delivered to your home.

Secondary school pupils are also being asked to take a twice-weekly test.

Dr Liz Robin, Director of Public Health for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said: “Getting into the habit of twice-weekly testing as part of our everyday lives will help us all to keep each other safe. Alongside the ongoing vaccine rollout, it will help us to move forward with the roadmap out of lockdown.”

You, Me and Discovering: Welcome to The Adventure of Kissing Consciousness Hello! I'm James and I'm thankful to Discovering Magazines for inviting me to connect and share with you through this new column. I'm very excited about what you may get out of it.

I

'm the founder and author of Kissing Consciousness, a conscious living movement, and I've near-perfected the art of helping people to release the conditioned, and therefore false, limitations, self-judgements and self-constrictions that we pick up on life's journey. Uncover those and you'll shine like a beacon.

Although you were born without any sense of any need for selflimitation, this life has set us all our own personal 'portfolio' of what Kissing Consciousness calls 'Human File Permissions'; other people shape us to make us feel parts of us are, or aren't, allowed. This can be anything big from whether we feel free to pursue the career (or lover) of our choice, to whether we can receive a compliment without blushing.

As well as releasing selfconstrictions we'll also learn some fascinating insights around human nature: Emotions don't need to be scary in the way we've been led to believe. Confidence is nothing to do with being loud, it's merely honest self-confiding (the clue is in the name; confidence).

Genius is available to anyone in any given moment. Stress is impossible without self-judgement creating a conflict with our 'truth'. Positive thinking is basically just the absence of negative thinking.

The key to all of these is the removal of selfjudgement and self-constriction. Self-judgement stops you being honest with yourself (confidence) because the judgement implies you 'shouldn't' be a certain thing. It prevents your ever-available genius because it makes you second-guess yourself. It is the negative thinking that impedes what KC calls 'Positive (Not) Thinking'. And self-judgements make us fear emotions because the notion of how we 'shouldn't' respond to them (crying, shouting, running) creates anxiety around facing them.

At any time, these life skills are essential not just for surviving but also for thriving; the real mark of health and wellbeing.

Throw in this COVID era, which is basically global system failure's 'sequel' to the 2008 global financial crash, plus many other system failure challenges like extreme wealth inequality and mental health pressures, and the value of optimising our selfacceptance, resourcefulness, emotional strength and mental health support is obvious. So, I look forward to sharing with you again and imparting more insights.

We have been receiving call after call from distressed individuals, who between them, have had tens of thousands of pounds taken from their bank accounts by unscrupulous scammers. As if people are not finding it hard enough living through a deadly pandemic and numerous lockdowns, they are also now having to deal with the aftermath of having been conned out of their savings. For some people, this money is all they have due to the closure of small businesses and restaurants as well as redundancy.

Over the last six years, we have written numerous articles highlighting the dangers of online scamming; what to look out for, what not to do, how important it is to remain vigilant, yet people are still falling for these scams every single day.

We would like to point out that this is in no way their fault, it is because the scams are becoming more and more sophisticated and convincing, and in addition, scammers are taking advantage of the current situation by preying on the vulnerable.

Five years ago, the UK Government set up the National Cyber Security Centre, which acts as a bridge between industry and government, and which provides a unified source of advice, guidance and support on cyber security.

It is one part of a larger vision for increased cyber security and aims to make the UK a safe place to live and work online. It is part of GCHQ, one of the UK’s security services.

In a nutshell, the NCSC provides a single point of contact for organisations of all sizes, government agencies and the public in a bid to highlight the importance of being cyber security aware. It also works with law enforcement, the UK’s intelligence and security agencies and international partners.

The NCSC website has a fully comprehensive collection of guidance for businesses of all sizes, the self-employed and sole traders, as well as individuals and families. There are tips on safely setting up video conferencing services (i.e. Zoom, Skype), securing your devices and shopping online securely.

It also offers advice on spotting and dealing with suspicious emails, calls and texts and how to ensure organisations are able to deal with the cyber security challenges they are facing since more and more employees are working from home.

LOOKING FORWARD TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE

T

he sun is shining, spring flowers are out, and the clocks have changed.

Non-essential shops are opening and the vast majority of over-fifties have had the jab.

I’m always conscious when I write this that my thoughts won’t appear in print for a few weeks and the nature of our battle with coronavirus means it could all change again very quickly.

However, despite a third wave in Europe, I am hopeful that the success of our vaccination programme means we’ll be able to keep on track with plans to ease lockdown. Please continue to follow the guidance and keep yourselves and your families safe.

FUNDING Getting a glimpse into what life was like three thousand years ago is a rare treat – so it’s great news that Historic England has awarded a grant of £73,261 for the conservation and protection of the Bronze Age log boats found at Must Farm, Whittlesey. Now housed at Flag Fen in Peterborough, the discovery of the eight boats on the edge of the quarry is of international historic importance. Meanwhile, it’s good to see plans for the Whittlesey Heritage Centre move forward with architects invited to tender following CPCA funding approval of £500,000 to help develop the centre, alongside £218,169 to create a new Heritage Walk. All fantastic for Whittlesey and a boost to the visitor economy.

Funding has also been approved to start restoration work to St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church in Wisbech.

The National Heritage Lottery Fund is committing £363,200 to the scheme to revitalise the Grade I listed medieval church including the leaking roof as well as the masonry and drainpipes. Inside, plans for a new kitchen and toilets will make the church fit

for the modern era and allow expanded use as a community hub able to host events.

FLY-TIPPING Fenland District Council has had more than six hundred fly-tipping reports over the last six months which is far too many. However, I’m pleased to see officers are proactively investigating in order to bring the culprits to justice with site visits, evidence gathering, interviews under caution and pending prosecutions. There is still much to do and I’d urge members of the public to support this by helping to report incidences and checking who they employ to take their waste away and to question where it is being taken.

FLOODING In January I chaired a summit meeting to discuss the flooding in the constituency over the festive period. One of the key early findings is that much of the flooding appears to have been where ditches have either not been maintained or land grabbed for extra gardens. Now is the best time to resolve outstanding issues, before the situation becomes acute again and I am determined to keep up the pressure on the local agencies involved in water management.

READ TO SUCCEED Finally, a quick plug for our annual Read to Succeed community campaign, which has delivered more than ten thousand new books to pupils across the constituency in recent years. Thanks to those organisations which have already pledged funds to help raise enough money to buy a new reading book for every Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire. May Day Traditional English May Day celebrations include crowning a May Queen and dancing round a maypole, where each dancer holds a coloured ribbon and intertwines them as they dance.

T

he earliest records of maypole celebrations go back to the 14th century and by the 15th century the maypole tradition was well established in southern Britain.

The tradition carried on into the 21st century in the Isle of Ely. Centenary Green, part of the Octavia Hill birthplace house in Wisbech, has a flagpole which converts into a maypole each year, used by local schools and other groups.

The Spring Bank Holiday on the first Monday in May was created in 1978; May Day itself is not a public holiday in England (unless it falls on a Monday).

Unlike the other Bank Holidays and common law holidays, the first Monday in May is a school holiday and not as part of a half-term or end of term holiday. This is because it has no Christian significance and does not otherwise fit into the usual school holiday pattern.

May Day was abolished and its celebration banned by Puritan parliaments during the Interregnum, but reinstated with the restoration of Charles II in 1660. May 1st, 1707

was the day the Act of Union came into effect, joining the kingdoms of England (including Wales) and Scotland to form the Kingdom of Great Britain.

In Cambridgeshire villages, young girls went May Dolling (going around the villages with dressed dolls and collecting pennies); this dressing of dolls and singing was said to have persisted into the 1960s in Swaffham Prior.
