Welcome to your October issue...

No sooner have holiday things been stored away and new school shoes and uniforms ‘broken in’, than we now turn to local schools and their Open Days for next September’s potential intake. Besides that, our “What’s on” guide continues to supply you with the massive range of activities being held over the weeks to come in our area.

A reminder that if you are looking to give up smoking, this month is for you! “Stoptober” is the campaign and so much help is available by visiting www.healthypeterborough.org.uk and www.campaignresources.dhsc.gov.uk/campaigns/stoptober-2024.

With the money you’ll have saved, treat yourselves to a Christmas to remember. But before then, don’t forget to stock up for when those “Trick or Treaters” pay you a visit on Hallowe’en.

Finally, don’t forget to change your clocks (“Spring forward, Fall back”), as we lose the hour on Sunday October 27th.

Claire x

The cry, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again” must have rung out in Italian (or maybe Sammarinese) hundreds of times over the last twenty years. However, on September 5th, the San Marino national football team ended a twenty-year winless streak by beating the mighty Liechtenstein 1-0 in the European Nations League, for only their second victory in their 206-game history!

Another story to catch my eye involved a former police chief, Lord Mackenzie of Framwellgate, explaining to fellow peers in the House of Lords: “My wife, on one of her rare visits to London, had her credit card stolen. I monitored the use of the card. I didn’t report it to the police, because the thief was spending less than she was!”

And, on that note:

• They say that money talks – All that Lord Mackenzie’s stash could say therefore was, “Goodbye”.

• The difference between ignorance and apathy? I don’t know and I don’t care!

Enjoy the read!

Maxey Classic Car and Bike Show

Wow!! Another great day for the twenty-third Maxey Classic Car and Bike Show, held at Willow Brook Farm on Saturday, August 17th. The sun shone, the band DB5 played, and over 350 vehicles turned up to be shown by their very proud owners, and the money raised was their highest-ever total!

Chairman of the organisers, Bluebell Maxey Charity Club, Matt Thompson, commented, “Every year our judges, who are renowned national classic car journalists, are amazed at the number and quality of classic cars that come along to our show. All proceeds raised go to charity and we will have a total of £6,000 to give away this year. We would love to hear from readers of their suggestions of a local charity or cause deserving of a donation. Please get in touch – details are on our website. We wouldn’t have been able to stage this event without the help of our sponsors and the team of volunteers who helped us with the set-up and on the day. A huge thank you to them all.”

WE HAVE A WINNER!

Congratulations go to nine-year-old Sienna Lobozzo who proudly shows off her £50 wad, having won our Summer Treasure Hunt. Sienna attends Market Deeping Community Primary School, and (besides going to school!) loves taking part in the treasure hunts and is so pleased to have won. She’s not quite sure what she is going to do with her winnings, (but could I suggest that those little feet could do with some shoes and socks before the cold weather sets in? – Ed.)

Well done, Sienna!

Our slogan is: “If you drive it or ride it and love it … then show it!” This was certainly the case for both familiar faces and new faces this year. Plans are already in place for next year’s Maxey Car Show, due to be held on Saturday, August 16th, 2025.

Olive Oil -A Joy of Life!

The long-term health benefits for the inclusion of olive oil, as part of a healthy, balanced diet, are very much documented. Extra virgin olive oils are unrefined and cold pressed.

The Two&One Olive Oil Company became established in Hampshire during 2004, by Ben and Lola. The history of Lola’s Spanish family can be traced back five generations. In 1997, Lola presented her family’s olive oil to Ben’s parents and introduced Ben’s family to some recipes. Since 2004, business relationships grew. Ben then qualified as a master miller with la Escuela Superior del Aceite de Oliva (ESAO). 2023 saw the Two&One brand of olive oil become available in the UK, including London.

Several celebrity chefs have used Two&One premium olive oils and included the productions when performing live, on stage cooking demonstrations. Educational programmes and tastings have proved very popular at Southampton City College (chefs’ section) from the outset and at other venues too. Picual olives are utilised to great advantage for the productions of Two&One premium olive oils.

Two&One Negra Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil I found to be aromatic, smooth, very versatile and splendid for many uses – from drizzling over pasta dishes and salads, to using for frying, roasting and numerous other inclusions.

Two&One Envero

Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil has a light golden colour and is notably fragrant. Herbs come to mind for the mouthfeel, which is elegant and smooth. Dipping, drizzling and as a salad dressing are amongst many uses, plus fish and meat enhancements.

Two&One Verde Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a further extremely popular production. A greentinged colour greets the eye. Refreshing and flavoursome, with a peppery conclusion for the palate’s delight, it is great for dipping and for salad dressings in particular.

Two&One Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oils are definitely worthwhile seeking out. Please visit their very informative website. Online ordering is available (enquire about the ‘free delivery’ order code) and easy. Highly recommended. The South Downs Olive Oil Company Ltd, Hampshire SO24 0NQ. Tel: 07942 280242.

THE FIVE BELLS at EDENHAM “Ringing Out Loud” Once Again!

It was so disheartening for so many of us, for so long to have passed what was once such a thriving local establishment as The Five Bells at Edenham, closed for months, wondering whether it would be following the fate of so many local pubs in our area and closing for good.

Fortunately, an ambitious local couple, Bill and Lucy Sacker, saw an opportunity to chase one of their long-held dreams of owning their own pub/restaurant. Six months on from having completed a thorough refurbishment, that front door (locked for so long!) now has eager customers passing through, either to feast on the drinks and delicious food on offer in the restaurant and lounge, or to relax in the adjoining, perfectly maintained, beer garden. Their daughter, Eleanor is a key player in the Sacker team, whilst sons, Ben and Sam, are happy to contribute when they can.

The refurbishment has transformed the bar and lounge area, exposing the original quarry tiles and two Ancaster brick fireplaces, accompanied by light pastel shades on the walls, creating a fresh feeling throughout. The restaurant area, over two levels, enables over sixty diners to enjoy, not just the spaciousness of the place, but also a marvellous Spanishinfluenced menu.

With Bill and Lucy having travelled extensively in Spanish-speaking countries and then living in Burgos, Northern Spain, it is no wonder that the menu has more than just a slight Hispanic feel to it. The tapas menu includes a wide selection of reasonably priced, small and sharing dishes, whilst the stand-out has to be the “Cordero Asado Lechal”, a lamb dish as served in Castilla y Leon in Spain (available on pre-order

only). The full Spanish experience could be completed with quality Rioja and Duero red wines and maybe a Pacharan liqueur!

The main menu includes a range of meat, fish, pasta and pizza delights, catering for any specific dietary requirements. The traditional ‘Sunday Roast’ menu is proving to be very popular too, (on the one day when tapas dishes are not available).

The Spanish effect even reaches as far as the draught alcohol offering, with Madrid’s finest, Mahou, taking pride of place on the bar, alongside other lagers and cider. Ale drinkers, meanwhile, can enjoy Timothy Taylor’s ‘Landlord’, Nene Valley beers, and a ‘guest’ ale, which is changed regularly. The Sackers are keen to stress that the drinks, dispensed by smiling, knowledgeable bar staff, are as much a reason as the food as to why the Five Bells has witnessed such a busy period since re-opening in March.

The Five Bells is set in the picturesque village of Edenham, just a couple of miles west of Bourne, and is within walking distance of Bourne Woods, not to mention the gem in South Lincolnshire’s crown, Grimsthorpe Castle and its fabulous grounds. The walkers (complete with accompanying dogs), cyclists, and passing travellers all receive that same warm welcome which is so important in the hospitality world. You may even hear the friendly staff wish you, “Una cálida bienvenida”!

BESPOKE TREATMENTS AVAILABLE

Say Goodbye to Cellulite…

So, let’s tell you about the new technology that we are bringing to Deeping and the surrounding areas. As we know, cellulite affects around 80 % of women over the age of twenty, and every woman, no matter what size you are and how much exercise you do, will suffer from it at some point or another. It is the bane of our lives! It is different from obesity and is seen in women with no specific body mass index (bmi).

The presence of cellulite appears in three grades, according to severity, but all stages can be improved by our new treatment.

As fat cells increase, they push up outside of the skin and tough, long connective cords pull down. This creates an uneven surface or dimpling and is what we refer to as cellulite. It is a harmless skin condition, but a lot of ladies don’t like the appearance of it and

want a way to make their skin look more aesthetically pleasing, so that they feel more confident when wearing certain items of clothing. It can appear on thighs, stomach and buttocks and other areas, and even though you can make lifestyle changes, it is still extremely difficult to make changes to this ourselves.

That is why we have invested in a brand-new machine that has the power to make a dramatic difference to the appearance of cellulite. It is non-invasive, pain-free and no recovery time is needed. Treatments are able to be repeated weekly with a course of six, recommended to provide you with the perfect result.

“I Have Been Diagnosed with Dementia; Can I Still Update my Will?”

With

Dementia is a condition predominantly linked with the aging population, and the number of people diagnosed with the disease is set to rise to over one million by 2025. Those familiar with it understand its impact on both the individual with the diagnosis and their loved ones.

Contrary to popular belief, receiving a dementia diagnosis does not automatically mean a person cannot make a will to say who their money and possessions should go to after they die. Instead, it depends on whether a person can understand and make decisions specifically about the will.

So, what would someone with a dementia diagnosis need to know and understand before you update your will?

You need to understand:

1 that you are making a will and the effects that doing so will have. This means you should realise that the will has no effect during your lifetime, but that it will dictate who looks after your affairs and who will receive your assets after you die.

2 ... what you own to be given away. You don’t need to know to the exact penny, but an appreciation of the value of your property (if you own one) and the amount of money that you have in the bank, or any investments is important. You would also need to consider any valuable chattels that you own.

3 the make-up of your family and those who might have a claim on your estate. This doesn’t mean that you must include everyone, but it does mean that you need to consider them and whether or not you want to leave them something.

If you can understand these three things, you can probably make a will. If there is any doubt, your advisor might ask that you undertake a capacity assessment with an independent expert. You shouldn’t be worried if this is suggested; it is just an extra level of protection that means you and your decisions will be respected.

If you need any help or advice around this tricky topic, call W&P Legal for a free initial discussion on 01778 252301.

Embracing the Autumn of Your Life

Just as summer yields to autumn with its promise of cooler weather and falling leaves, our lives move through different seasons, each with its own unique opportunities and challenges. For many of us, approaching retirement marks the beginning of a new season –an opportunity to reflect, plan, and prepare for the autumn of our lives.

Navigating the Transition

Summer, with its long days and boundless energy, symbolises the peak of our working years. It’s a time of growth and productivity, but as the leaves begin to change, it’s essential to start planning for the quieter, more reflective season of autumn. This transition mirrors the shift from a career-focused life to retirement, where the focus changes to ensuring that your financial future remains secure.

Contributing to your pension can offer substantial tax benefits as well as maximising ISA contributions to help your savings grow tax-free.

This transition can help mitigate risks and ensure that your portfolio aligns with your future needs.

Tax Planning Opportunities

Preparing for Retirement Assess Your Financial Health

Just as autumn is a time for farmers to assess their harvest, now is the moment to review your financial situation. Take stock of your savings, investments, and pensions. Are you on track to meet your retirement goals? This is also a good time to consult with a financial planner to ensure that you’re prepared for the changes that come with retirement.

Adjust Your Investment Strategy

As the seasons shift, so should your investment strategy. In your working years, you may have focused on growth-oriented investments. Now, as you approach retirement, it may be wise to consider a more balanced approach, incorporating stable, income-generating assets to provide security in your retirement years.

Autumn is a great time to revisit your tax planning opportunities before the year ends. Contributing to your pension can offer substantial tax benefits as well as maximising ISA contributions to help your savings grow tax-free. Review your current contributions and adjust them if necessary to fully utilise these taxefficient savings vehicles.

Book Recommendation

For those looking to navigate this transition with confidence, I recommend “Die with Zero: Getting All You Can from Your Money and Your Life” by Bill Perkins. This book offers practical advice to help you manage your finances effectively as you move into retirement, ensuring that you can enjoy the autumn of your life with peace of mind.

What next?

*Investments carry risk. A pension is a long-term investment, not normally accessible until the age of 55 (57 from April 2028).

Most of the work in October involves clearing the plot, plenty of digging, and composting debris. It is better to dig over the plot before conditions become too wet or cold. There are several options for digging over vacant areas and improving the soil but do keep off the soil if it is wet and do not be tempted to dig if it is frozen.

• If you have heavy clay soil, “rough dig” as the approaching cold weather may help to improve the soil structure by breaking down large clumps into crumbly particles.

• The deeper the fertile soil the better your crops will be. “Double digging” will achieve this as you remove a trench and then break up the sub-soil with a fork before adding a layer of well-rotted manure or compost. Then cover with the soil from the next trench. This is very labour intensive but can be useful when creating new beds, remedy poor drainage or to reduce soil compaction.

• Dig, add well-rotted manure, and cover for the winter. This keeps the soil warm and stops rain from leaching out nutrients.

• Sow green manure and dig in in the spring.

• Now is a good time for those who have adopted the “no dig” method to add a mulch of an inch or two of well-rotted manure or your own compost.

good sized pieces, making sure each has signs of dormant buds and, as it is not a fussy plant, it can be planted almost anywhere, so long as the ground does not get waterlogged.

Crops that can be sown this month are:

• Japanese over-wintering onion sets.

• Last chance to transplant spring cabbages –be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves.

• Plant garlic

• Broad beans – early varieties should overwinter.

October is perfect for dividing large, oversized crowns of rhubarb: if established plants are left indefinitely, they do eventually produce less each year. Cut up and divide the crowns into

• Plant bare-rooted fruit trees or move existing ones.

• Sow a pot of basil seeds and put in a propagator or on warm windowsill, keeping the soil moist. Parsley and mint can be dug up from an established clump, put in a pot and kept on the windowsill – much cheaper than buying pots from the supermarket!

Other jobs for this month include:

• Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries.

• If you have not already done so, earth up or stake (or both) Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants.

• Pick the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana – this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening.

• Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost.

• Remove runner bean canes: if left in the ground, they will easily rot.

Happy Digging!

Are You Being Charged for Updating Your Mortgage with the Same Lender?

Updating your mortgage with the same lender without additional borrowing or altering the length of the mortgage is called a “product transfer”. Here at Path Mortgages, we do not charge for the service of updating your mortgage in this way. The process of completing a product transfer is a simple task and requires a lot less administration than a full remortgage to another lender.

How do you update your mortgage to a new rate?

You start by speaking with one of our advisors. We will look to fully understand your circumstances so we can best advise on whether it makes sense to stay with your existing lender or to move to a new lender. Should staying with your existing lender be the right choice, we will complete the paperwork for you at no cost.

Why don’t I just update the product myself?

Not only can we compare the products with the wider market, we monitor the change over to the new rate, and keep an eye on changes to rates whilst we wait for the update to take place. Should a lower-cost product become available we update this, free of charge. Once the

update has been completed, we will make a record, and notify you when your mortgage is up for renewal next time, meaning you’re on the ball for next time.

If you choose to update the product yourself, you may find yourself looking at a range of products. These products can range in interest rate, setup fee, and terms. The system you use is not an advisory service, meaning if you make a mistake, the blame is on you. An adviser is different as we will highlight the pros and cons of each option, logically explaining the true cost of each option.

How long does it take to update the mortgage rate with the same lender?

Updating the mortgage rate can often be completed on the same day. However, some lenders require notice to avoid dropping onto the higher standard variable rate. The best ideal situation is to speak with us six months before your rate ends. However, even if you have already entered the standard variable rate, we will help you put that application in as soon as possible.

How do I sign up?

If you would like a free comparison of the market and an adviser to help you update your mortgage rate, contact us on 01778 428158.

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

DO YOU HAVE SPRAY FOAM?

Industry reports suggest that some homeowners have found it difficult to remortgage or sell properties that have spray foam insultation. If installed incorrectly, spray foam insulation may lead to condensation which can affect a roof structure.

PROBLEMS THAT OCCUR:

• Reduced air circulation and ventilation within a roof space.

• Dampness and condensation on the underside of a roof as the spray foam stops moisture from escaping.

• Difficulty in remortgaging or selling your property.

• Roof rafters are at risk of decay.

Langtoft Primary School

It’s been a great start to the new academic year at Langtoft and all the children have settled so well, especially the new ones in Foundation Stage, enjoying their new learning, experiences and making friends.

A new year brings new Forest School lessons with Woodland Julie, and the Year 6 children have loved learning new skills including using different tools, plant, insect and bird identification and tie dying with blackberries. We are very fortunate to have a large Forest School area, and each class gets a term’s worth of lessons each year to develop skills and enjoy learning outdoors.

We are all about making sure that children’s opinions are heard. This will help them to access their rights inside and outside school. Our focus this year will be: the learning environment, helping the children through their school year by involving them in making the school a better learning environment for them to experience; mental health and healthy living, supporting them to have a fresh and clear mind to approach their learning journeys in school; and extracurricular activities: how we can enjoy time after school.

We are holding three Open Day sessions for children starting school in September 2025 and these take place on Monday November 4th at 9:15am, Monday November 11th at 1:30pm and Monday November 11th at 4pm. No booking is required, so please do come along and see our wonderful school for yourself.

DSJ’s Mrs Glover Scoops Deserved Top Award!

Deeping St James Primary School are delighted to share the news that one of our Year 4 teachers, Mrs Glover, was nominated for the ‘Term Times Class Teacher of the Year Award’ for 2024. We found out just before our School Sports Day that she was officially the winner of this award! Mrs Glover received an overwhelming number of nominations, with parents rushing to praise both her teaching skills and the way she has supported the children in her class.

Head Teacher, Mr. Westley, said the Term Times Award is a

fitting acknowledgement and recognition for Mrs Glover’s outstanding contribution to school and her class, in particular, commenting, “She has always been determined to ensure all the children in her class receive the best possible education and enjoy their time in school. The award just shows what all her colleagues already knew – what a brilliant, caring teacher she is!”

One of numerous comments from parents, was one from Jenny Purdy, describing Mrs Glover as her children’s “school mum” and saying, “I am

extremely grateful that the school has such a determined, caring, inspiring teacher”.

Presently, there are limited places available at Deeping St James CPS – please contact the school office for details on: 01778 342314.

Deeping’s Windmills

Lincolnshire once had more windmills than any other county, although some were in fact “wind engines”. Instead of operating mill stones, their sails provided power to scoop up water when farmland became flooded.

Deeping St James had two windmills for grinding grain and supplying village bakers with flour. One stood in a field on Spalding Road near The Goat public house, and was in the form of a post mill, mainly constructed of wood. The top section could be turned by levering a large oak post, to ensure the sails always faced the wind. It was a primitive design, dating back to medieval times and required considerable strength to operate. When it was advertised to let in the 1830s,

it had a set of grey stones for grinding coarse meal to feed animals, as well as stones made of French quartz to produce white flour. In earlier centuries, wheat and rye were sown together in the same field, and the mixed grains were milled to make a type of bread called maslin. The loaves were brown with a dense texture, and over time white bread became more popular.

The second windmill was near Broadgate Lane, on a site now called Windmill Close. It was a large tower mill, built of stone and operated by the Tomlin family from around 1820 until the 1930s. It was still being powered by sails in

1900, but a steam engine was installed later to drive the mill stones.

The Tomlins had a bakehouse near The Cross, and from the 1860s the Oldham family were also millers and bakers in Deeping St James. They used steam power to grind flour behind their premises in Church Street, and in 1874 were fined for selling bread adulterated with alum.

It was commonly added to whiten flour and bulk up loaves, being cheap and flavourless. As bread was a staple food in Victorian times, its sale was closely regulated. All loaves had to be sold by weight, and in 1866 James Tomlin was fined for failing to carry a set of scales and weights when delivering bread with his pony and cart.

The post mill had lost its sails and become dilapidated by the early 1900s. Its wooden structure was vulnerable to weather damage, and newer milling techniques had made it redundant. No evidence of it remains.

The solidly built tower mill had a house attached and was occupied by Walter Tomlin until his death in 1933. The premises were then used for farming and the base of the mill housed a hen coop. The remains of the tower were demolished in the 1960s to make way for a housing development.

QR Codes – What Are the Risks?

Solar Panel Bird Proofing

Understandably, people sometimes worry about whether to trust QR codes. Many are used in public spaces (like pubs and restaurants which are deemed to be relatively safe), so you may be wondering: are criminals placing malicious QR codes to steal money, information, or trick people in some way?

The majority of QR code-related fraud tends to happen in open spaces (like stations and car parks), and often involves an element of social engineering. However, QR codes are increasingly being used in phishing emails (a technique sometimes called ‘quishing’).

Have you spotted a recurring payment to a company you’ve never heard of? You’re not alone, as subscription traps – often linked to dodgy QR codes – are one of the most reported complaints to the Which? scam sharer tool.

People find they've been charged for subscriptions they didn’t sign up for after trying to download apps on their phones, or scan QR codes in restaurants, pubs, shops, bus stops, stations and car parks. Others notice payments to brands they don't recognise, but don't know where these companies got their card details from.

Five ways to use QR codes safely – thanks to consumer champions, Which?

1 Check for evidence of tampering when you scan QR codes in public spaces, as someone may have placed a sticker over the real one, or it may look out of place. If in any doubt, type in the web address manually to visit the correct website.

2 Don't use an app to scan QR codes as it increases the risk of downloading malware or being redirected to a misleading advert. Most phones have a scanner built into the camera, so use this instead.

3 Preview the web address as you start to scan it – you should be able to inspect the link by clicking on additional settings within the scanner, or you could turn off internet access for your device (put it on airplane mode) and open the link to view the address details first. If it doesn’t begin with ‘https’ or the website's address is different to what you were expecting, then don't visit it.

4 Don't use QR codes to download apps as this increases the risks of installing something malicious. Use a verified app store instead (Play Store at play. google.com or App Store at apps.apple.com).

5 Avoid QR codes in emails as scammers are increasingly using QR codes to disguise malicious links, as email security tools don’t always scan images.

Deepings Camera Club

The club was founded almost forty years ago in a Deeping pub and there are still three ‘Life Members’ who were there at the time! The club’s home has always been the Community Centre in Douglas Road, and they run a full programme of presentations, competitions and fun (!) from early September to mid-May. There are about seventy members, and an average turnout of up to forty for most meetings.

The main aim of the club is to encourage anyone to further whatever photography interest they have, and to become confident in whatever they decide to do. Some people join as complete “point and shoot” novices and then, with help and encouragement from more experienced members, go on to gain qualifications and letters after their name. Some spend thousands on equipment and hours sitting in hides (either here or on safari), to try to get that elusive picture (see the home page of the website).

The club are proud of their achievements and last year came nineteenth out of around eighty-six competing clubs from across Britain. Their images are on the newsletter page of their website. They take part in an annual battle between the sixteen clubs in Lincolnshire and usually win. There are also battles with clubs in the Peterborough/Wisbech area whilst they also have images accepted into regional exhibitions in Nottingham and St.Ives (Cambs).

The club’s annual exhibition is to be held on October 26th and 27th and gives every member a chance to show off their work - a great opportunity especially for those who are not yet confident enough to enter a competition. It also gives the public a chance to see what they do and to enter the draw to win their favourite print. This year, there will be refreshments and the sale of secondhand photography books and equipment.

Wills

Why do I need a will?

Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate.

If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.

Lasting Powers of Attorney

What are they?

Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.

These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.

Probate

What is it?

When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.

We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.
