Welcome to your March issue...
T
his is the favourite month for many of us mums. On the one hand, it gives us the opportunity to thank our wonderful mothers on their special day, (this year March 10th) for everything they do for us and for ‘providing the glue’ to keep the happy family together. Some of us whose mothers are no longer with us (and this being our second Mother’s Day without our dear mum) can take time to remember fondly all those times when she turned out to have been right all along … but forgave us anyway! On the other hand, of course, it’s the time when we mothers are allotted by our partners and families a full day of doing nothing, a whole day in which we are spoilt rotten with flowers, chocolates, and perfume. Tell me if you think I’m dropping too big a hint here! Enjoy the day … whatever form it may take.

Mother’s Day is always an invaluable opportunity to take the time out to thank your mother, (and don’t forget the mother-in-law either!) for giving you so much, right from the very beginning. This year, our mums are placed centre-stage on March 10th. That extra evening light, when the clocks go forward an hour on March 31st, will make us all feel that summer’s not too far away either.

Nature
Spring is definitely Springing!
F
[ by David Denman ]
After all that rain and flooding, it is good to return to a familiar looking landscape. amiliar too are rooks doing what they have done in local trees and woodlands for generations at this time of year - the most noticeable of early nesters and a loud reminder that we are in spring.
Taking time to look up at a rookery in action is a lesson in active communications. Each bird occupying a nest has different calls for different jobs, and those jobs come thick and fast: talking to your mate, shouting at neighbours who are trying to steal key twigs holding up your nest, warding off non-rook species and, of course, protecting the all-important eggs. And as you leave a rookery, probably defended by the racket of noisy rooks, take a look at the ground - hiding the developing spring flowers is usually a carpet of twigs and branches which have either fallen out of nests or been discarded by the builders. The year is now in transition from winter, but while some changes happen instantly, such as new birds joining the dawn chorus, other changes happen far more gradually. Hawthorn hedges will soon turn white, whilst hedge bottoms slowly turn from brown to verdant green as the ground flora develops.
Periods of warm weather usually bring out many familiar species, including butterflies, hoverflies, and bumblebees. All are dependent on those vital building blocks that the summer is based on - early nectar sources. Species such as gorse and hawthorn provide the nutrients that will sustain many insect species, at a time when cold days alternate with warm days. Other familiar faces expected to make an appearance in coming weeks include furry bee-flies which hover just above areas of sunlit bare ground. Later in March, walkers will be pestered by large, slow flying insects, often small groups, with shiny black bodies and milky wings. These are St. Mark’s flies, which are normally at their peak numbers on St.Mark’s Day (25th April). Usually, walkers appear to be bothered by two species of shiny black flies which look radically different. But they are in fact the same species, with the males and females exhibiting sexual dimorphism where both genders look different. Finally, if you have a bat or bird box still to be installed, please hurry before they are needed and remember to keep those bird feeders well-stocked!

Solar Panel Cleaning
How to See Clearly if Your Double Glazing Fails By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Window condensation is a common problem, especially in the colder months, when windows typically remain closed for long periods. When the seal on a double-glazed glass unit breaks down, or ‘fails’ as it is known in the industry, that condensation will get into the inside of the glass unit, resulting in misted double glazing which can be permanently trapped. If this is the case, it won’t only be the heat that is rising from your home, your energy bills could see a hike too.

MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY Solar panels are prone to bird droppings and a build-up of dirt which block light to your solar panels and in turn reduces output. Regular cleaning will maintain performance Removal of dirt & bird droppings
So – what should you do at the first signs of condensation in your windows?

The air trapped inside the two glasses (or gas for improved thermal efficiency) creates an insulating barrier that keeps heat in and the cold out. If the seal fails, and condensation gets trapped inside these two panes of glass, this can result in misted windows.
It is also worth mentioning that broken sealed units are leaking expensive energy out from your home into the environment, making your heating system work harder than it needs to
Our bird-proofing system solves this problem, protects your investment and helps output.
14 16
Double glazing is made by putting two panes of glass together with a thermally efficient spacer bar in between that is slightly smaller than the overall dimensions of the glass to form a gap between them. The glass is then sealed together using a hot melt adhesive to form a double-glazed unit.
The message from Safe Local Trades double glazing experts is that the most common misconception is that a brand-new window is needed when the sealed unit fails, meaning that a lot of people put off having the unsightly misted window replaced due to cost.
BIRDS NESTING
All aspects of tiled, flat & fibre glass roofing
Internal condensation within the room can be prevented by opening your windows for a short period of time every day, or opening your window trickle vents if you have them, or making sure the room is adequately ventilated.

To repair this window, all that is required is a new double-glazed unit (providing the frame is in good condition), not the entire window. This unit can be fitted in minutes with minimal disruption! Whatever your style of window, or concern, there is likely to be a solution. An eco-friendly alternative, thanks to the non-toxic materials used, and available in a range of colours, a resin driveway is naturally draining, meaning no more puddles from heavy rainfall. They are highly resistant to rust, oil, corrosion, salt, and cracking, and are also the safest option, being resistant to abrasion, slipping, indentation and ignition. The business owner explains how important it is to have a sound foundation, upon which the resin is to be applied. He recommends
RECOMMENDATIONS: … the men worked very hard, they were ❝ polite and very tidy and were able to answer all questions we asked them - a big thank you to Mark and his staff - well done!” (C.H.)

Timing Matters: When to Speak to a Mortgage
R
enewing your mortgage is a significant financial decision that can impact your future stability and expenses. Planning ahead and seeking advice from a Mortgage Adviser at the right time can make all the difference. In this article, we’ll outline a recommended timeline for initiating discussions with a Mortgage Adviser to ensure you secure the best possible deal for your circumstances.

before current mortgage ends
Initial Meeting (9 months before renewal)
Approximately nine months before your fixedrate mortgage comes to an end, it’s advisable to schedule your first appointment with a Mortgage Adviser. While mortgage offers typically last for six months, initiating the process earlier allows for strategically securing a rate before the 6 month time period. At this stage, Mortgage Advisers, like those at Path Mortgages, can provide an Agreement in Principle (AIP) and secure a product for up to 90 days after which you can lock in the product for a further 6 months. This AIP is invaluable as it doesn’t cost anything, doesn’t impact your credit score, provides peace of mind, and offers flexibility to switch to a lower-cost option closer to the renewal date, should one become available. During this initial appointment, your Mortgage Adviser will review the terms of your current mortgage. They’ll assess factors such as interest rates, repayment options, and any

Secondary Meeting (6 months before renewal) We now have the luxury of choosing the best option from all the products available today as well as the product we secured 90 days before this meeting. The initial step can be a valuable one, potentially saving you a significant amount on your monthly payment. In tandem with exploring available mortgage options, your adviser will conduct a thorough financial assessment. This assessment will take into account factors such as changes

Langtoft Primary School As part of “Internet Safety Day”, we took part in a variety of workshops from Lincolnshire County Council, across the whole school. These engaged and enlightened all the children with regards to keeping safe online. Our LEGO League team took part in our regional competition and made it through to the semi-finals! Linchfield Community Primary School To support the excellent work of the NSPCC, the children and staff took part in a ‘Dress up for Digits Day’, creating and wearing some fabulous outfits, all with a ‘number’ theme. Maths lessons were replaced by fun-filled activities and games which all helped the children to apply their maths knowledge in a real-life practical context. A big thank you to all involved - we have raised £246.75 for charity! “Young Voices” is the largest children’s choir in the world! A group of Key Stage
Market Deeping Community Primary School In January, the Lego Club entered the First Lego League Competition hosted by Park Air. Nineteen children represented the school asking questions, competing in the robot programming runs, and presenting their innovations. ‘Team Harmony’ won the “Best Project” award for their ukulele-playing robot and ‘Team Sporties’ won the “Core Values” trophy for their excellent team and communication skills. This is one of the most challenging things children do in school and everyone performed very well. We welcomed “Kids Country” from The East of England Agricultural Society to teach Key Stage 1 pupils all about the countryside, where their food comes from and rural life. They got to make pancakes, learn all about local farming and taste test some delicious sausages! 2 children recently went to Sheffield Arena for the final big performance, following weekly rehearsals since the start of the academic year. Year 6 have been studying the work of Julian Opie and Andy Warhol. They considered how they used digital images in some of their artwork. They then began to capture our own images, using technology, before creating simplified outline drawings to build their own portraits from. Amazing Artwork!
Baston CE Primary School On January 15th, a team of twelve Year 6 children participated in the School Games Sportshall Athletics Tournament at Spalding High School. Each child had to compete in two track events and two field events. Each member of the Baston team gave their all, showing both our school values and those of the tournament - determination, honesty, passion, respect, self-belief, and teamwork. We were delighted when Baston were announced as winners! We will be in the county finals in Lincoln on March 18th. In their Science learning, our Year 5 children have been studying “Earth & Space”, hence the visit on January 18th to the National Space Centre in Leicester. It was a wonderful experience! Firstly, the children went on a journey through the solar system in the Planetarium, then enjoyed participating in the space quiz. They also had lots of opportunity to visit the various exhibitions around the centre, and asked lots of questions and explored all the exhibits. M A R CH 2 0 2 4

Wills
Why do I need a will?
Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate. If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.
Lasting Powers of Attorney
Probate What is it?
What are they?
When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.
These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.
We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.
Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.

TRAVEL VACCINATIONS AND HEALTH ADVICE SERVICE HOW IT WORKS - YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED! 1 WHY MAY I NEED TO BE VACCINATED?
If you’re about to travel outside of the UK, you may need to be vaccinated before you set off for your trip. The childhood vaccination programme in the UK protects you from a number of diseases, but you may need extra vaccinations or antimalarials if you’re planning on visiting certain parts of the world.
2 HOW CAN WE HELP?
Getting vaccinated can help prevent you from getting ill if you’re exposed to diseases which we don’t normally have in the UK. We can help you understand how to keep your risks low while abroad and help you work out which vaccinations and antimalarials you may want to consider depending on things like: • Which regions you’ll be visiting • Your age and general health Some travel vaccinations may be needed several weeks before departure. Ideally you should see us six to eight weeks before travelling, but we may still be able to help if you’re leaving sooner, even days before you travel.

Hay Fever?
We Are Here to Help!
I
f you are anything like me, then you are fully aware just how much hay fever can ruin your spring and summer months. Last year, I was excited to be able to offer a treatment that I know personally changed my life. With one pain-free injection, it is possible to eliminate your symptoms for the affordable price of £70... and it lasts for up to three months!
I am a registered pharmacist of over twenty-five years, and, during my practice, I became only too aware of just how serious the symptoms can be, and how many of you out there suffer unnecessarily. The injection is no longer provided by the NHS, so many people find themselves administering multiple products per month with minimum relief.

The hay fever jab has helped me so much this summer. It's helped ease my symptoms. Alistair and Julie were so friendly and chatty, they put me at ease straight away and made me feel so welcome. Will definitely be returning!"
Last year at the clinic, I and hundreds of our clients managed to remove the need for all medication, both over the counter and prescribed, after this simple treatment. We found last year that our clients were typically spending over £30 per month on multiple products. We are able to treat, not only adults, but also children who suffer during their school terms, as long as they are aged six and over, subject to consultation. As we all remember, summertime is exam time! So, why not spare ten minutes of your time to reclaim your summer and make it “hay fever-free”?

Will & Probate Services
“The Loving Legacies Foundation” - New Charity Launched
NICK ASH, Managing Director W&P Legal
A new charity with a mission to help deliver wills and other associated legal services to families with children and young people who have additional and complex needs has been launched.
S
et up by employees at W&P Legal, “The Loving Legacies Foundation” aims to fund the families to make wills with a professional will-writer, to ensure the children’s care can continue should their parents/ carers pass away. Research shows only 44% of adults in the UK have a will that is valid and up to date*. That means that over half have not taken the necessary steps to protect their assets, make their wishes clear and, most importantly, elect legal guardians for children.
SEND (Special educational needs and disabilities) families was getting the funds together to pay for the legal services. With continuous fundraising and proactive partnerships with law firms around the country, “The Loving Legacies Foundation” will provide the vital, added protection these families need to ensure their children and young people are safe in the event of their death and alleviate some of the added worry the parents may already have. Steina McKenna, left, attending a “Little Miracles” event with Nick Ash and Sophie Ward.
Whilst that shocking statistic didn’t come as too much of a surprise to employees at W&P Legal, it was when they became Gold Ambassadors for local charity, “Little Miracles” that the extent of the lack of knowledge around how important later-life planning and protection is became clear. Steina McKenna and Mya Miscandlon, both employees at W&P Legal, had been working closely with “Little Miracles” to educate the families on why making a will is so important, providing legal seminars on setting up family trusts, writing wills, putting Powers of Attorney in place and taking all necessary steps to ensure continuity of care and protection of assets should they pass away.** Steina found that the common denominator with
The foundation is launching this month and will begin with a sponsored twenty-mile walk in the Peak District in April. Nick Ash, a local and wellrespected will-writer, is also aiming to raise £60,000 this year in honour of his sixtieth birthday (named ‘Sixty for Sixty’) and will be donating 50% of the proceeds to “The Loving Legacies Foundation”. “The Loving Legacies Foundation” is currently seeking pledges for fundraising, and invites anyone who is interested in learning more about the foundation or donating, to keep an eye out for their official JustGiving page which will be available imminently.
* Statistics taken from National Wills Report 2023. ** Research undertaken by WillAid shows almost two-thirds of parents in the UK have not named guardians in their will for their children should they pass away.

Market Deeping’s Theatre
B
KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE
efore the almshouses were built in Church Street, Market Deeping, there was a large, stone barn on the site, used by travelling theatre companies. They fitted out the building with a stage and seating, including a gallery, and the interior was elaborately decorated. Two different plays were performed each evening during their stay lasting several weeks. In October 1824, The Stamford Mercury announced: “The town of Market Deeping promises to be very gay next week. The attraction of the fair is increased by Mr Smedley and his company of comedians.” Reports always praised the respectability of Joseph Smedley and the talent of his performers who toured South Lincolnshire between 1800 and 1840, assuring the public they were worthy of support. Other travelling players who set up unlicensed booths in the area had a reputation for vice and immorality, and attracting pickpockets wherever they went. William Major of Deeping St James was a popular comedian and musician with Mr Smedley’s company. He performed comic songs and accompanied acts with his harp, banjo, and guitar. The plays were usually light-hearted, combining romance and humour, with titles such as “To Marry or Not to
Theatre Manager, Frederick Bullen took over when Mr Smedley retired, but he failed to match his predecessor’s success. During a performance at Market Deeping in 1842, the theatre’s gallery collapsed on to people seated below. Stamford Mercury’s melodramatic report described a fearful crash and “ladies dug out of the fallen timbers with ribs broken, shoulders dislocated, severe contusions and blood running in streams from hundreds.” It was clearly a shocking incident, but no lives were lost and within ten days Mr Bullen had the barn entirely refitted and freshly decorated. The public was reassured about its solidity and performances resumed with a popular comedy. Mr Bullen continued to tour with his wife and young children, who all acted in his shows, but his sudden death in 1851 was attributed to the stress of loss-making productions. The heyday of travelling players had passed. By 1863, the barn’s role as a theatre had ended and it was the venue for a public tea to celebrate the marriage of the Prince of Wales. The building was demolished in 1877, and by November the following year, the almshouses had been erected to provide homes for six needy widows or spinsters.

Marry” and “How to Die for Love”. Local audiences were promised spectacular scenery, including a shipwreck with moving waves, an enchanted chamber, and an elephant, as large as life. Due to the expense of such elaborate sets and a huge variety of costumes, seat prices were only affordable to the more prosperous residents of Deeping and district.

ays are starting to lengthen Other jobs – too numerous to mention them all! and, with the clocks going • Lettuces and other salad crops can be sown forward at the end of the either indoors or outdoors under cloches or in cold frames. Tomato and cucumber month, there should be seeds can be sown indoors but wait until more time to spend on the end of the month. the allotment.
You could, of course, use the extra daylight to create some raised beds, especially if your plot is on clay soil or if you wish to permanently separate the cultivated areas of your plot. Make sure that the width does not exceed 3-4 feet(90-120cms), as you may have trouble reaching the centre. Some benefits of a raised bed are: less weeds, better drainage in areas with clay soils, more growing space, no soil compaction from human feet, warmer soil earlier in the season, longer growing season, better soil structure, improved germination of seeds, and earlier crops. The fertility of the soil is paramount and keeping your soil at its best involves adding decaying plant matter such as compost or manure but, as a rule of thumb, split your plot into thirds: one third heavily enriched, good for potatoes, peas, beans etc and salad crops; one third topped with a mulch of good compost, which will suit onions, cabbages, leeks, broccoli etc; one third unenriched for root crops such as parsnips and carrots. If it is too well nourished, the tops may grow at the expense of the roots, and you may end up with “hairy carrots.” The vegetable plot is a veritable smorgasbord for insects and pests. Have you thought about putting up bird boxes or bird feeders to attract the birds who will in turn eat the pests?

• Sow Brussels sprouts, cabbage, sprouting broccoli indoors and, to take full advantage of the ripening season, sow aubergines, chillies, and peppers indoors. • Herbs such as rosemary and sage will benefit from a good trim, and chives and mint can be propagated by dividing them and re-planting. • Plant out onion and shallot sets – last chance to plant garlic. • Early varieties of carrot, beetroot, spring onions, peas, chard, parsnips, spinach, and broad beans can be sown into the open ground but may need to be under cover. • Last chance for planting bare-rooted fruit trees and bushes.
• Feed and mulch fruit trees – fertilise the base, water in and then cover with wellrotted manure or compost to act as a mulch. • Remove dead leaves from cabbages and Brussels. • Don’t forget to feed your over-wintered crops such as onions, kale, spring cabbage – use blood, fish and bone meal, chicken manure or seaweed–based organic fertiliser. • Prepare seed beds by raking over to a fine tilth and add fertiliser.
Happy planting!
