Welcome to your December issue...

D

ecember is a time for both reflection on what’s gone and anticipation for what’s round the corner of the new year. We can think about what we’ve achieved in 2023; those places we’ve visited and new people who may have come into our lives; others who we’ll see no more, but whose memory will remain strong. I prefer to look forward, though, and my new year resolutions are already in the planning stage! As the big day edges nearer, let’s hope that the Christmas lights in your area will bring much-needed cheer in what have sadly been, for many people elsewhere in the world, such traumatic times of late. Let us all hope that peace and reconciliation aren’t too far away in both Ukraine and the Middle East. All the very best to you all for Christmas and for 2024 – good luck, but most importantly, good health!

Claire x

Let me be the first to wish you all good health and happiness for Christmas and the new year. Just in case your crackers haven’t got any cracking jokes in them, try these for sighs! • Those irritating people who use selfie sticks really need to have a good, long look at themselves. • Always borrow money from a pessimist. They’ll never expect to see it again. • I was intrigued by a new restaurant called “Karma” There’s no menu—you just get what you deserve. • Why is Peter Pan always flying? Because he Neverlands. • When you have a bladder infection, urine trouble. Here’s hoping that you can look back on this year with fondness and forward to 2024 with optimism. Enjoy the read!

School News

Market Deeping Community Primary School

I

t has been a busy couple of months for our children with lots of exciting learning both in school and out. Years 1 and 2 enjoyed the end of last term’s pirate theme with their own ‘Pirate Day’ to celebrate all their learning last term.

Our girls’ football team and boys’ football team both reached the County Finals by winning the local

tournament involving ten local schools. This is the second time for the girls and third year in a row for the boys. It is great that they are competing at such a high level, and we wish them the best in the final tournament. A group of Year 6 girls enjoyed a taste of lacrosse and all our Year 5s went to see Michael Rosen perform his poetry at the New

Theatre in Peterborough – we even got a ‘tweet’ from the man himself! It was a great way to celebrate National Poetry Day! Grylls Bear (our school mascot) went on his own adventure to a Rugby World Cup match, and as a school we celebrated Harvest Festival with Rev George from St Guthlac’s and gathered over 108 kilos of food for the Food Bank.

History Comes Alive at Witham Hall

With the help of Partake History, a company providing educational workshops, Witham Hall Pre-Prep pupils experience history through live action, drama workshops covering the Great Fire of London, Ancient Egypt, and the Edwardian Seaside. The Partake History team have more than thirty years of experience teaching and performing

as experts in creative and innovative living history, dance, and drama. For the recent Ancient Egyptian Day, pupils create scents and aromas from the past, dressing in traditional robes and re-enacting ancient ceremonies to experience history in action. Using costumes, role-play and investigation, the history curriculum comes to life.

Linchfield Community Primary School Linch’ Wore it Pink!

Linchfield Primary School took part in ‘Wear it Pink Day’ again this year. Collectively they raised a fantastic £558 helping make life-changing breast cancer research and support happen. Well done to them all and big thanks to Mrs Donnelly.

Spooktacular Dancing

Once again, the Friends of Linchfield School (FLS) did an amazing job of organising Halloween Discos for the whole school to take part in. The children looked fantastic in their Halloween costumes and thank you to the staff who helped to ensure that the children were happy and safe at the discos.

Football Report (written by the Year 6 boys who attended):

Linchfield played five games and only lost one, eventually coming third overall. We scored fourteen goals and only let in two. We passed the ball around well and at the end of the game we shook hands as a sign of respect to our opponents. We enjoyed participating and representing the school, especially winning most of the games! We hope to represent the school again soon. 4

How Can Massage Cupping Help You?

H

i, I’m Heidi Marshall, CMT, from Illinois in the States. I introduced myself in last month’s issue. In it, I briefly described some of the therapies that I have been trained in and use in my sessions with clients. This month, I’d like to expand on one of the therapies that I use…Massage Cupping.

Cupping has roots in Ancient Egypt and China. There are also connections of cupping in Greece and Ancient Islamic texts. It then spread to Europe around the 14th century. It was used for treating such ailments as menstrual imbalance, loss of appetite, fever, pain, and vertigo. I was trained in Massage Cupping by Anita J. Shannon. Massage Cupping is different from what most think of when they hear those words. It isn’t big, red circles left on your body, looking like you lost a fight with an octopus! It is an evolution of cupping. It uses suction and negative pressure to release tight muscles, reduce scarring and adhesions, reduce oedema, open tissues, and bring in fluids, and help the lymph system to “take out the trash” and move nutrients throughout the body. I also use it as a diagnostic tool. Moving the cup along the body can show me areas that are tight, stuck, and/or the tissue brought into the cup may change colour indicating old blood underneath the surface. I use a machine to create the suction for me with glass and polycarbonate cups. The application of lotion or oil is used to create a seal with the cups and help with smooth gliding. It can be used on the back, neck, face, limbs, hands, and

Heidi Mars

hall

feet. Massage Cupping creates an opening of the tissues and is a nice option for someone who is sensitive to deep pressure but needs deep work. It is also sedating to the nervous system. Massage Cupping draws inflammation out, does not irritate the skin, opens the pores (allowing for easier absorption of topical oils or analgesics), brings fresh blood into an area to start healing, and moves out toxins. The results are often accumulative. I have had great success working with scars/adhesions, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and increasing one’s range of motion. It is safe for most, with an awareness and gentleness used for children, the elderly, diabetics, and those on blood thinners. It can be very profound and powerful. As with all bodywork, don’t be surprised if there is emotional release, soreness, perhaps feeling a bit sick, and/or feeling dehydrated. Drinking water after your session, staying warm, and doing some very light movement/stretching all help with integrating the session. Come and see how Massage Cupping can help you. Please call me with any questions and to book your session.

NHS Blood Pressure Monitoring Service Why is this important ? Cardiocascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes for premature death in England. Hypertension is one of the biggest risk factors for CVD and this on one of the top five risk factors for premature death and disability. Early Detection, and subsequent treatment of hypertension is essential in reducing the of risk in CVD. There are an estimated 5.5 million people with undiagnosed hypertension across the country, we are here to help reduce those figures.

How it Works Step 1

Visit the pharmacy team to talk about the Blood Pressure Monitoring Service to see if you are eligible.

Step 2

The pharmacist will conduct an initial consultation in private and take your blood pressure measurements.

Step 3

The pharmacist will discuss your results with you and will offer advice. Where necessary , we may offer a blood pressure monitor for you to take home, to understand your blood pressure measurements in more detail, over a 24-hour period including day and night.

TRAVEL VACCINATIONS AND HEALTH ADVICE SERVICE HOW IT WORKS - YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED! 1 WHY MAY I NEED TO BE VACCINATED?

If you’re about to travel outside of the UK, you may need to be vaccinated before you set off for your trip. The childhood vaccination programme in the UK protects you from a number of diseases, but you may need extra vaccinations or antimalarials if you’re planning on visiting certain parts of the world.

2 HOW CAN WE HELP?

Getting vaccinated can help prevent you from getting ill if you’re exposed to diseases which we don’t normally have in the UK. We can help you understand how to keep your risks low while abroad and help you work out which vaccinations and antimalarials you may want to consider depending on things like: • Which regions you’ll be visiting • Your age and general health Some travel vaccinations may be needed several weeks before departure. Ideally you should see us six to eight weeks before travelling, but we may still be able to help if you’re leaving sooner, even days before for travel.

their expertise helped to ensure I understood the treatment, answering any questions before agreeing to carry out the treatment. I knew I was in safe hands and felt relaxed in their professional and friendly presence, throughout the treatment they ensured I was comfortable and explained the procedure. I'd been thinking of having lumi eyes for a few years, I have a pale complexion, and unfortunately inherited thin skin under my eyes creating a dark tiring appearance. Having had my first lumi treatment, within hours I noticed a visible difference, I feel much more confident and have a more fresh healthy look to my face. I love the fact that the treatment is quick, relatively pain free and heals so quickly without any bruising. I'm already looking forward to the results of my next lumi treatment.”

Selling Your House in the New Year? Want to Speed up the Process?

S

elling a house in this current market is tough going. The cost of living and increasing interest rates have reduced the number of buyers on the market whilst there are still plenty of houses being marketed. Each seller is therefore having to find new ways to entice buyers.

We can help you get ahead with our new “Information Pack Service”. With this service, we will help you produce all the documents required to sell your house, together with the title deeds and associated paperwork (service reports, building regulation documentation etc) before you receive an offer. You can then impress potential buyers with

your proactivity, speed, and willingness to proceed with the sale, together with providing full disclosure. Once you have secured a buyer, we will be able to issue contracts straightaway without delay. How much is this service? This Information Pack Service is available for £150 + VAT plus disbursements. If you subsequently instruct us in connection with the sale of your property, then you will receive a discount of £50 + VAT on our standard legal fee (and you may not have to pay disbursements already incurred when obtaining the pack) Please feel free to call us on 01778 341494 or email Andrew on aboullemier@doubleandmegson.co.uk to discuss this service.

We would like to thank you for your continued support this year – it is very much appreciated. We take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and a very safe, healthy, and peaceful New Year.

All I Want for Christmas is Peace on Earth and Goodwill to All

I

know it is a massive cliché, but now more than ever it feels like an important wish. But as I grow older, Christmas gets less about the material things, no more massive piles of presents for the children, but more about the people who are close.

I know I am fortunate, but I simply don’t need any more stuff (although the inevitable pack of socks from my mum will come in handy!) but I do need to know that my children are safe and secure and that I have all my bases covered. That’s why I am going to encourage you to take a

few moments to reflect over the festive season on what would give you real peace of mind. And, of course, I am going to encourage you to write or update your will because that’s where you will give the most important gifts you will ever give. With Christmas just around the corner, it is important to remember that the gifts you’re creating within your will are not only for Christmas but for a lifetime. They’re a testament to your love and thoughtfulness that will keep giving long after the holiday season. So, this Christmas, give yourself the greatest gift of all – Peace of Mind.

Early Motor Bus Memories

I

KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE

n the early 1900s a journey from Deeping to Peterborough involved walking three miles to a railway station, or hiring a horse-drawn vehicle to get there, and catching a train. There were no bus services on that route until the 1920s. William Smith of Bourne replaced a horse-drawn bus, which he used to take people to nearby markets, with a motor vehicle in 1919. He began a daily service to Peterborough four years later, and round the same time, Edwin Shaw set up his motor bus business in Maxey, and the Hare family’s “Primrose” buses operated from Market Deeping. The earliest vehicles had solid rubber tyres and were licensed to carry only fourteen people. There were no timetables, so passengers waited by the roadside to catch whichever company’s bus turned up first. There was fierce competition between proprietors on the Peterborough route, resulting in drivers racing each other to poach customers and beat their competitors’ arrival times. There was also a temptation to exceed the permitted number of passengers. Police regularly checked buses for overloading. In 1925 Frank Hare was summoned for carrying forty-two people in a vehicle licensed for twenty, and when another bus

Deepings

was stopped at Northorpe in 1929, ten passengers were counted standing in the gangway with a further thirty-six seated, when there should have been no more than thirty-two. The driver’s excuse was that it was a wet night… With so many people crowded onboard, the atmosphere must have been rather fuggy, especially as most people smoked cigarettes. Fortunately, the roads in this district are flat so that early buses with limited horsepower could cope with their load. One local man recalled an outing to Leicester, when passengers were obliged to get out and help to push their bus up Wardley hill. London buses had open tops in the 1930s and a Deeping man described his first experience of them as hairraising. Riding through streets full of traffic, he could almost touch people on other buses passing by. As rival companies fought for business on the route between Bourne and Peterborough, villagers benefited from cut price fares, and the cost of a ticket from Deeping to the city dropped as low as sixpence. The Transport Act of 1930 brought some regulation after a decade of chaotic competition. Mr Smith’s company, trading as Delaine became the sole operator through Deeping to Peterborough, and a hundred years later they are still serving that route. The Hare family’s transport venture was short-lived and they concentrated on their joinery business, while Shaw’s of Maxey have celebrated a centenary of coach travel, nowadays mainly for holidays and day trips.

Cut Your Laundry in Half:

Help Your Grown-up Child Buy Their First Home!

A

re you tired of those endless piles of laundry that never seem to disappear? Do you find yourself constantly battling the never-ending cycle of dirty socks, and wrinkled shirts that appear as if by magic? Well, we have a solution that’s so simple, you won’t believe you didn’t think of it sooner. It’s time to help your grownup child move out and buy their first home! We understand that the idea of your children leaving the nest can be bittersweet. After all, they’ve been a part of your daily life for years, and you might even miss their endless debates about pizza toppings and their knack for leaving wet towels on the bathroom floor. But, let’s be honest, there’s something undeniably liberating about the thought of having fewer laundry loads to tackle. Here are some amusing reasons why helping your child purchase their first home can lead to a “laundry reduction extravaganza”: No More Mismatched Sock Puzzles: The infamous missing sock conundrum will become a thing of the past. Your child will be responsible for keeping track of their socks and dealing with any missing pairs. If they can’t find a matching sock, that’s their problem – not yours!

The End of the “I Have Nothing to Wear” Dilemma: Once your child has their own place, they’ll soon discover the joy of doing their own laundry and the consequences of running out of clean clothes. They’ll be motivated to wash, fold, and put away their laundry promptly, instead of complaining. Quiet Laundry Days: Remember those Sunday afternoons when the laundry room sounded like a never-ending parade of washing machines and dryers? With your child out of the house, you can finally enjoy a peaceful and quiet Sunday. Put on your favourite music or TV show without the drone of machines in the background. Room to Store Your Own Stuff: Once your child moves out and takes their laundry with them, you’ll suddenly have ample room in your laundry area to store your belongings. Finally, you can reclaim your space without tripping over a mountain of dirty laundry. So, if you’re ready to cut your laundry in half and enjoy the perks of an emptier laundry basket, it might be time to encourage your grown-up child to spread their wings and buy their first home. Your laundry-free future is just a housewarming party away! Who knew that “empty nest syndrome” could be so liberating – and stain-free? In the next article, we will explore how you can help, but if you cannot wait, please contact Peter at Path Mortgages.

Nature

Local Nature Report and Christmas Gift Ideas [ by David Denman ]

C

Autumnal traditions have been a little delayed this year with a belated leaf fall and late appearances of familiar fungi

ommon darter dragonflies and ladybirds could be seen sunning themselves on dew-soaked bramble leaves in mid-November whilst, confusingly, our winter visiting thrushes could be heard in nearby bushes – and in greater numbers than last year. At least our hedgehogs have favoured seasonal traditions and they have visited our garden, in much reduced numbers, since late October. Another sun-loving group, the hoverflies, seem to be drawn out of shelter when the winter sun shines. Several species of both large and small hoverfly can be seen visiting low-growing, sunlit flowers on the Maxey Cut banks. I spotted a somewhat sleepy large hoverfly (Helophilus pendulus) with handsome yellow stripes and bands. The adult is large and wonderfully patterned and one of many smartly turned-out flies. The young stages can be found in winter and are aquatic, horrifying those who clean out shallow ponds, water butts and water filled containers. They take the form of “rat tailed maggots”, having a grey fleshy body, linked by a long telescopic breathing tube to the air above the water surface. When disturbed, their tube recoils downwards, resembling a rat’s tail.

There is nothing stripy about one of winter’s treats which we now have around our area. Shorteared owls hunt voles in farmland and edge habitat. Watching them hunt in late evening and seeing a glimpse of their yellow eyes is a wonderful way to end a winter’s walk. Thinking of presents for the ecologist in your family? Field guides are a great option, as are books describing one group of creatures in great detail, such as the new book on shield bugs – a really accessible group for those who would like to move on from dragonflies, moths and butterflies. Christmas is also “equipment time” for ecologists. Trial cameras are an ecologist’s best friend (a trial camera found the thought-to-be-extinct, Attenborough’s Echidna in New Guinea last month) but they can be addictive, and you will never be happy with just one trial camera! The current boom in moth trapping (where the moths are caught at night, identified, and then released) has been fuelled by the availability of a range of reasonably priced and practical moth traps. But don’t forget Christmas presents for wildlife too. Whilst it is mild now, always having food out in a familiar place will help birds find food quickly if the weather turns. And, to make a real contribution to the smaller creatures, how about gifting your garden dwellers with a bug hotel? They are reasonably priced and provide shelter for a wide range of insects – a great way to introduce children to conservation and ensuring that there will always be “room at the inn” for insects at Christmas!

Consumer Advice

Online Bargains and How to Avoid the Social Media Scammers By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Buying online has never been easier and one of the most popular sites is Facebook Marketplace. But, sadly, the more popular the methods of buying and selling, the more appealing to the scammers. With the Christmas shopping season here, many of us are looking for a bargain – but how do you know if your seller is genuine? Here are some tips: • Don’t feel pressured into a quick sale. Look for local items so you can check them – and meet the seller – before you pay. • Fraudsters may want to pay by bank transfer. Never pay by bank transfer. Pay by debit or credit card to protect your money. • Even though a seller may be recommended, having good reviews and followers doesn’t make them genuine. Meet them in person and a genuine seller will let you pay in a way that protects your money. • Fraudsters are very careful to take the time and effort to set up a fake sale – even for low value items. They may try and tempt buyers with items that are sold out or rare. It is better to pay a little more to a genuine seller than to lose your money. • If you are thinking about buying from a website or company you are unfamiliar with, visit a review site like Trustpilot and look at the experiences of other consumers.

Review by Paula Kirtland (Discovering Magazines)

Reporting scams on Facebook Marketplace

What a performance! From the moment the curtain went up, I couldn’t stop smiling; Professor Higgins, Eliza Doolittle, Col. Hugh Pickering, and the crew bounded onto the stage, and I was transported back to Edwardian London. The stage set, the costumes, hair, and make-up were phenomenally accurate and of course the actors themselves (Professor Higgins with his quintessentially English accent and Eliza with her Cockney twang) made for a truly authentic production. So many well-known songs had the whole audience joining in, with “Wouldn’t it be loverly”, “ With a little bit of luck”, and “I could have danced all night” to name but a few, all sung with such enthusiasm and emotion. The house orchestra were so on point with each song and kept the whole production moving along at a pace. How could they top last year’s “The Sound of Music”? I wondered. Well - you definitely did it, Mr Higgins, as did the whole cast, crew, and the lighting and sound team! A special mention to Martyne Bell as director with her attention to detail throughout.

1 Report the listing. Find the specific Marketplace listing you want to report and follow the onscreen instructions. 2 Report the user. Go to the Facebook profile of the user you want to report. Click on the “…” or ‘More Options’ link, usually under their cover photo. Select “Find support or report” and follow the instructions. 3 Record all conversations. Before reporting a user or scam, make sure to save or screenshot any suspicious conversations or transactions. 4 Contact the police, especially if you’ve lost money or an item with substantial value. 5 Submit feedback to Facebook. If you experience a scam or see a potential loophole that might be exploited by fraudsters, it’s a good idea to provide feedback. Check out Facebook’s official guidelines for staying safe while using Facebook Marketplace (https://www.facebook.com/help/ 1156544111079919), so you can avoid scams. Wishing you a safe and peaceful Christmas.

ARE YOU FED UP WITH CLUTTER?

F

Have you ever looked around your home and thought “Arghhh we could do with more more space?” Or are you about to have a tidy up but don't want to throw everything out? Well, the answer could be to make more use of the space you've already got, literally under your own roof.

or many homeowners, the loft is an underutilised area because it can be difficult and dangerous to reach. Peterboroughbased, loft ladder installer, Access4Lofts, whose slogan is 'Creating Space The Easy Way' can change all that, often in less than a day.

For the full works, customers can get a retractable three-section ladder, a new hatch, a floating floor over the loft insulation and lighting. Paul says the new ladders are spring-assisted and lighter so they're much easier to use, come with a safety handrail and there is an option of widetread wooden steps.

Access4Lofts Peterborough owner Paul Norgate says much of the work he conducts is for growing Access4Lofts is an approved “Which?”-trusted families looking for more storage space or retired trader which means the company has passed people looking for the safest access to their loft its stringent checks. The company has full public available. F R O M T Hliability E insurance and all ladders and work carried

School News

Autumn Fun at Langtoft Primary School

We currently have spaces in Year 1, Year 2, Year 4, and Year 5. Please contact us to take a look round our fabulous school!

Our OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) initiative has transformed our social times. This has allowed the children to play imaginatively, and problem solve. We have designated small world areas and a digging area, and the children are loving the opportunity to dress up, dance, make up a variety of games and build fabulous dens. As a UNICEF Gold Rights Respecting school, we respect and protect the rights of every child to access the Convention on the Rights of a Child. Article 21 A children’s education should help them fully develop their personalities, talents, and abilities. Article 31 Every child has the right to rest, relax and play and to take part in cultural and creative activities. All year groups access Forest School during the year. Currently, Year 1 are exploring Australia with Aboriginal artwork, whilst Year 2 are building houses with wattle and daub in preparation for their Great Fire of London. Our autumn clubs are in full swing, including our LEGO League club working with Perkins (Caterpillar)

to collaboratively plan, build and code a robot ready for their January competition. Our Year 6 children have visited Langtoft church as part of our Remembrance Service, observing the two-minute silence whilst learning about local heroes who gave their lives for us.

Wills

Why do I need a will?

Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate. If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.

Lasting Powers of Attorney

Probate What is it?

What are they?

When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.

These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.

We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.

Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.
