hat a momentous few days we’re about to witness as June arrives and all eyes will be fixed on Her Majesty the Queen. Hopefully, the weather will be kind, for everyone to enjoy the spectacular range of activities and events which will be offered to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee.

Our ‘Discovering’ team were in Whittlesey recently on a team-building exercise which involved partaking in a delicious lunch with friendly service at Vesuvio, the fabulous, family-run Italian restaurant. The following weekend, The Yaxley Festival turned out to be a really enjoyable time for us all, as we supported the Young Technicians Academy which offers valuable training in the live events industry, and which has made such good progress since opening last year.

Finally, love and Happy Father’s Day greetings go to my dad, Bill; father-in-law, Rich; and husband, Chris.

Platinum Jubilee fever is gripping the nation, and we’ll be sharing something truly amazing, as we celebrate Her Majesty the Queen, having come to the throne seventy years ago. Every city, town and village across the land will be hosting events which will aim to bring together communities in a spirit of respect for Her Majesty and harmony with each other.

A reminder, (if he hasn’t already dropped enough hints!) that June 19th is Father’s Day, that annual opportunity to give him/me some respite from kitchen and garden duties. My own favourite definition of a father has got to be “a man whose wallet now holds photographs of his children where once there was money!”

And finally, I’ve given up asking rhetorical questions. Just what is the point of them?

When I once told my teacher, “I think only idiots believe in coincidences”, he replied, “That’s weird; so do I”.

Your Garden

une heralds the beginning of summer. Not only will your crops benefit from the longer, sunnier days, so too will the weeds! Here are a few tips for keeping them at bay:

• Hoe regularly and particularly when the soil is dry as the severed and exposed roots will die quickly. If you hoe when the soil is damp, remove the remains so that they won’t re-grow.

• Spread mulches such as garden compost, well-rotted manure, or bark chips, to suppress weeds or use lightproof membrane to kill more established weeds.

• Make sure that you don’t let weeds flower, you will only get new crops of weeds from their seeds.

Garden pests can have a devastating effect on crops and, with the latest concerns over chemical pest control, an interesting alternative is using food-grade “diatomaceous earth”, good for slugs and other pests as it dehydrates them. For more information, have a look at “How to Use Diatomaceous Earth for Organic Pest Control in the Garden” (soilseedandgarden.com) As the month progresses, thinning and planting out to final positions will start to overtake sowing as the main activity, as this month offers the last opportunity to sow many seeds. If the weather is dry, then water your seed drills well before sowing – this way the young plants will develop a good root system. It is also your last opportunity for sowing runner beans and main crop carrots. Sweetcorn can be planted out and as it is self-pollinating it is better sown closely in a block. Mark out a square

or rectangle and plant at about 35-40cm (14-18inches) apart in each direction.

Other jobs include: • Plant out vegetables that you have grown from seed but make sure you harden them off before planting out in their final position.

• Thin out seedlings and plant others in their final growing positions.

• Earth up potatoes and, towards the end of the month, harvest earlies.

• Protect strawberries by mulching around them with straw to keep mud splashes off, and keep birds off your ripening strawberry crop by covering your plants with netting.

• Cut down broad beans and peas just above the surface and use for compost but leave the roots in the ground as a useful source of nitrogen.

• Feed tomatoes with a high potash feed.

• Once you are sure that frosts are over, you can plant out the more tender crops such as aubergines, peppers, chillies, courgettes, marrows, and squashes.

• Succession sow beetroot, salad crops and carrots.

• Sow Florence fennel, traditionally after the ‘longest day’, June 21st, as it is less likely to bolt – sowing in succession is a good idea.

• Brussels sprouts, leeks, sprouting broccoli and the last of the summer, autumn, and red cabbages and the first of winter cabbages can also be planted.

• Protect carrots with insect proof netting and net brassicas to deter pigeons.

Remember to keep everything well-watered!

The Short Life of

RAF Langtoft

n the north side of Towngate, opposite The Deepings Medical Practice, are Lancaster Way, Shackleton Close and other residential roads named after aircraft from World War Two a reminder that the site once formed part of an RAF base (although no planes ever landed there!) It housed the barrack blocks of RAF Langtoft, a ground control intercept radar station which had its Tech Site (operations centre) just over a mile away in Six Score Road, Langtoft Fen. The radar installation was set up in 1941 to detect enemy aircraft and guide night fighters towards the bombers. After the war, with concerns about a threat from Soviet aircraft armed with atomic bombs, Langtoft was upgraded to a more sophisticated radar system. A large concrete building, two storeys high, replaced the old operations block and some locals referred to it as “the aircraft carrier in the Fens”.

When it came into use in 1954, it trebled the radar control capacity.

The Market Deeping site was also modernised with concrete-rendered, single storey huts. These provided sleeping accommodation, a NAAFI club and shop, administration buildings, station HQ and a cook house. The dining hall had two brightly painted murals on its interior walls - one depicting working life at the Unit and the other showing sporting activities

by airmen. The artist’s name is remembered as Walter Comfort, a National Serviceman who was based there in 1952.

Initially, airmen marched between the two sites, with only senior officers and servicewomen using transport, but later canvas covered trucks or coaches ferried everyone around. Four hundred personnel were working at the base in the 1950s, including RAF regulars and young men on compulsory National Service, with about forty civilians also employed.

Sporting activities were encouraged on the station, which entered teams in local football, hockey, and table tennis leagues. During harvest, some airmen worked on nearby farms in their free time to earn extra cash – which was regularly spent in Deeping pubs!

By the mid 1950s, enemy aircraft had the ability to jam the rotor radar system used by Langtoft, and the station ceased operations in March 1958.

Married quarters on the Deeping base were then used as overspill housing for airmen at RAF Wittering and their families, but by 1972 the site had become derelict, and the remaining brick huts were described as an eyesore. Only the dining hut remains, amongst later housing developments, and is used as the Scout and Guide Headquarters.

The Tech Site was largely dismantled and sold off for business use. Now almost forgotten, RAF Langtoft played a vital role in defending Britain for almost two decades.

Summer Visitors are on the Way

Wildlife in June seems to be turbocharged with activity and the arrival of young animals. nyone waking early will be deafened by the dawn chorus if they were able to sleep at all with the arrival of mosquitos and other nocturnal buzzers in the bedroom!

At the time of writing, I await the return of our swifts. Last year it was May 13th and the regular nature of their return each year, with just the odd day’s variance, is astounding. As ever with natural history, you get to learn something new every day, for example last week I learnt that a swift’s main food is not insects, but spiders on silken threads floating in the air, which swifts catch and digest in mid-flight. When the swifts eventually return, they may well find their usual breeding site just under our eaves has been taken over by a family of starlings.

Surprisingly, along with the swift, starlings are also on the Birds of Conservation Concern red list – those species in most need of help.

Our hedgehogs are back and enjoying the food provided at our “Patio Café”; however, I was taken aback by the shortage of hedgehog food in our local shops - a good sign as more people seem to

be feeding hedgehogs. However, just like feeding birds, don’t forget to provide a shallow dish of water as our hogs spend as much time drinking as eating!

Another ‘good news garden story’ has been the increase in number of blue butterflies this spring.

Again, the curse of the “common” names makes an appearance. It is not normally the “common” blue that you see in gardens in spring, but the holly blue, essentially a butterfly of the spring, whilst the common blue is more frequently seen in the summer months. The underside of the wings of the holly blue has small black spots on a blue background whilst that of the common blue is more detailed and ornate with orange, white and black circle against a light brown background.

Another lovely misnomer is the grey wagtail, a bird frequently seen in ditches and rivers around the Deepings which is anything but grey! These are not dull and drab but have a yellow underside, contrasting perfectly with slate grey wings. And they do wag their tails as they bob up and down feeding on insects along the water’s edge. Another wagtail, the yellow wagtail, really lives up to its name by having a yellow breast like the grey wagtail, but wings with a yellowish-green tinge. This is a summer visitor (the grey wagtail is with us throughout the year) and has been seen in the Deepings during early May.

Deeping Apache Cub Scouts take to their Skates! nspired by Sky Brown winning the Olympic bronze medal for Team GB in the Tokyo Games, The Deeping Apache Cub Scouts wanted to try their skills at skateboarding. They finally had their chance when Team Rubicon, the leading skateboarding coaches, came to visit them at The Deepings skate park.

The Cubs were very excited and nervous; only a handful of the group had ever skateboarded before.

Before long, though, they were performing pancake

flips and tic tac turning and then it was off to the ramps! Despite a couple of falls, Issy coached the Cubs through, and they all managed to get the hang of travelling in different directions and on different levels.

Being able to introduce young people to new and exciting opportunities is what the Scouts are all about.

The leaders of the Apaches feel so strongly about this that, since returning to face-to-face scouting, following the pandemic, the Cubs have been scuba diving, skiing, climbing, sailing and horse riding.

A Busy Month at Linchfield!

Linchfield Community Primary School had a special visit from Lynda and June, two librarians from the local community. They read “The Secret Sky Garden” by Linda Sarah and Fiona Lumbers, to the children. They also donated some wildflower seeds to the school.

Year 6 children who wished to become Linchfield’s May King and Queen this year delivered speeches to persuade both pupils and staff to vote for them. The children’s speeches were wonderful and showed how much they wanted to represent the school. This year, the May Queen is Iris Twelvetree and the May King is Ryan Swanborough. Well done to them both! They will be attended by Elliott Cross and Ava Hobbs Marshall.

Year 3 have been working in teams to create a Booklet for Foundation, aimed at the transition between Foundation and Year One. The Year 3 pupils designed different stages of their booklet which they typed up to create one big presentation. The foundation children asked some great questions about the presentation.

School Parliament and Year 6 led a wonderful whole school assembly. School Parliament talked confidently about the importance of caring for our environment.

They shared ideas about how to help, for example writing on both sides of the paper, turning off lights and equipment when they are not being used, and recycling. Year 6 talked to the school about the pond area at the back of the school field. They are eager to tidy and develop the pond area so that it can be a pleasant space where staff can take pupils to explore and enhance their learning.

“Celebrate the Fens Day” returns this year on Saturday June 18th, and will form part of “Celebrate the Fens Weekend”, June 17th - 19th. The aim is to bring people together to take part in various activities across the Fens of Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Lincolnshire, and Suffolk, to celebrate everything about the Fens.

The celebration was created by Fascinating Fens, who believe in bringing people together to explore and promote the Fens through creativity, heritage, nature, wellbeing, and accessibility. The Fens are inspiring, beautiful, mysterious, and fascinating.

A big thank you to everyone already getting involved by organising the many planned activities.

These include nature trails, bell ringing, pond dipping, displays, guided tours, heritage walks, exhibitions, Fen Edge Trails, workshops, and making bug hotels.

Organisations involved so far include Cambridgeshire Geological Society, Crowland Abbey, Spalding Gentlemen’s Society Museum, New Life Old West (Cambs Acre), Madeleine’s Patch, The Great Fen (The Wildlife Trust), Wisbech Museum, Fenland Flag, CP Learning Trust, Fen Speak, Cambridgeshire Libraries, Kings Lynn Shakespeare Guildhall, Wisbech Community Hub, Chatteris Pocket Park, Ramsey Rural Museum, Boston Rambling Society. Activities are free to participate with donations very welcome.

You may also wish to do your own thing in the Fens on the weekend, such as a self-guided tour, go on a picnic, go camping, be inspired to write a poem or story in the Fens, go rambling, running, cycling, or flying your Fenland Flag. We all enjoy privacy when it comes to our garden, but what happens when overgrown trees or high hedges cause problems? Complaints of overhanging branches and conifers blocking out the light are all too common and may create ill feeling between neighbours. Try to resist taking matters into your own hands, so discuss the issue with your neighbour first.

Advice: 1) You have a common law right to cut back tree branches that overhang onto your property. The law states that any branches cut off belong to the person on whose land the tree originally grew, so you should ask your neighbour if they want them back, or if they are happy for you to dispose of them.

2) Don’t just throw trimmings back over the boundary – this could constitute 'fly tipping'.

3) When it comes to fruit on trees; even if they are growing on branches which overhang your property, the fruit still belongs to your neighbour. You are therefore effectively stealing if you pick these for yourself without your neighbour’s permission.

4) Be careful to check if any trees are subject to a preservation order – your local authority will be able to tell you this. If you cut down a tree with a preservation order, you will be guilty of an offence.

5) A tree belongs to whoever owns the property upon which the tree trunk originally grows. The owner has a duty to maintain this tree so that it does not cause a hazard. Therefore, if branches are broken and hanging precariously, the owner should remove these.

6) If you choose to cut down overhanging branches, or trim trees, you will have to pay for the cost of doing so yourself. Try speaking to your neighbour, however, as you may be able to reach some sort of agreement in relation to any gardening work required, though they are not obliged to contribute to this cost.

Stylist Libby “Cutting it” at HD Hair & Co

arlier this year, we ran a feature on Deeping St James hair salon, HD Hair and its joint-owner, Hollie Deboo, in which reference was made to Libby Taylor-Jones who had joined them as a ‘graduate stylist’ a few months earlier, after the salon reopened after the pandemic. It was most encouraging to hear from Libby herself as we spoke recently, just how she has progressed in her chosen profession.

Libby (21) had already spent three years at Stamford’s New College, gaining qualifications in ‘Hair and Media Make-up’ in 2018, ‘Higher Level Hair and Media Make-up’ in 2019, and ‘Hairdressing’ in 2020. Libby has since progressed from ‘graduate stylist’ to ‘stylist’ and things have

just gone from “good” to “great”! As word has spread on social media and by ‘word of mouth’, customers are returning in greater numbers for the skills and attention paid

by Libby, as her experience continues to grow.

he very basics of Health Qigong and Chinese medicine are based upon the five elements - Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood. In this month’s article, we are going to discuss the fire element, which links to the summer, the heart, and the small intestine.

Nobody would deny that our hearts are very important; anything about them that feels off in the slightest and we are straight to our GP - and rightly so! But in Chinese medicine the heart goes so much deeper than cardiology. It is the house of Shen, meaning our spirit, the window to which sits in our very eyes.

We have all encountered people through the years who speak so passionately about something that you can literally see the light in their eyes as they pour out every morsel of knowledge they possess on the subject at hand. Equally, we have all come across those who have lost a loved one or are suffering great despair - their eyes so worryingly dull and empty, their face lacking expression and colour, and their complete inability to engage mentally with anyone or anything.

Easter Egg Hunt Success for Ethan and Amber!

Congratulations go to Ethan Rouse (8) and his four-year-old sister, Amber, who won a fabulous ‘Chocolate Explosion’ in our April issue.

They made good use of the time when they were with their childminder with some other children from their school. Ethan is good at maths and loves playing computer games, mainly Minecraft, with his friends.

Amber, meanwhile, loves to paint and draw, and is especially keen on anything pink … and unicorns!

ADVICE FROM EMILY WALDEN, Legal Case Handler

I started working for Will & Probate Services just over a year ago, and in Nick’s absence (he’s off cycling in Belgium – lucky for some!) I wanted to share some of the things I have learnt in the past twelve months. Having never worked in estate planning before, I was really starting from scratch, but I have narrowed it down to my top five insights!

The importance of a Lasting Power of Attorney.

Most people either haven’t heard of a Lasting Power of Attorney or have heard of it but aren’t sure what it means. Essentially, it is a document that allows your chosen representatives (your attorneys) to act on your behalf for Property & Finance and Health & Welfare decisions if you were ever to lose capacity. We would all like to think this would never happen to us, but a Lasting Power of Attorney can cover all types of situation, for example being incapacitated after an accident. Having someone you trust manage everything for you during recovery can be invaluable.

The sense of relief when your will is written and signed.

So many of our clients feel a weight has been lifted when their wills are signed and safely in storage. It is something many people put off for a long time, despite spending a lot of time thinking about it. For most, it is hugely reassuring to know that their family and other beneficiaries will be taken care of when they are gone.

The importance of having a will professionally drafted.

I was shocked to learn that whereas 98% of professionally written wills successfully go through probate, only 37% of wills prepared at home do so. The message can’t really be any clearer, if you would like peace of mind that your will is legally valid

and will accurately implement your wishes, get professional advice!

What is probate?

Similar to the Lasting Power of Attorney, probate is one of those things that people hear about, but don’t really know what it is. In short, it is the administrative process following a person’s death. The executors will be required to get valuations of the deceased’s assets, apply for the Grant of Probate, pay any inheritance tax liabilities, and finally distribute the funds to beneficiaries. This is a process executors can manage themselves, or they can get professional help from ourselves.

Not all law firms are the same.

School News

Baston C of E Primary School We have had our first successful ‘Maths and Money Week’ in school this month. All the classes focused on money in a variety of contexts, learnt about why money is important and where it comes from.

A variety of tasks saw the children managing a budget for a school disco, and designing their very own new money!

This term, Year 3 have started a brand-new topic about castles. They have begun by learning about the locations of different castles within the UK and created and labelled different parts of a castle in their outdoor learning. They will be focusing in on learning about the history of Lincoln Castle next!

On May 6th, the wonderful Barker family very kindly brought some very special visitors into school! Our farming ambassadors did a brilliant job

of teaching us all about the lambs and we even got to feed them!

The following week saw the children in Year 1 visiting Reverend Carolyn at St John the Baptist Church in Baston to learn about the items in the church that are important to Christians. As well as looking around the church, Reverend Carolyn conducted a mock wedding which included a bride, groom, best man and bridesmaids, along with a mock christening with parents and godparents! The children had a wonderful hands-on experience and thoroughly enjoyed learning about Christianity.

Market Deeping Community Primary School We welcomed the Kids Country team to lead a “Breakfast Day” for children across the school. The children took part in a range of workshops to help them understand where their food comes from and the importance of healthy eating.

The children developed their understanding of food production and healthy eating in fun and engaging ways. It was a jam-packed day (and not just the jam on the pancakes!) in which the children experienced some real-life learning.

There was a tractor on the playground and a local farmer talked to the children about his potato farming.

There was a taste comparison for sausages and delicious pancake making.

Mr Ratchford, Headteacher, said: “These sorts of activities are so important to enable children to understand where their food comes from and what goes into making it. I hope it will inspire them to find out more and think carefully about their diets, impact on the environment and future careers.”

A puzzling activity on the Healthy Eating Plate improved the children’s knowledge of the food groups.

Deeping St James Community Primary School Here at DSJ, we are very proud to have the Eco Schools Green Flag award.

We organised competitions for the whole school and had some great bird feeder entries and moth posters.

We have an after-school Eco Club who meet every two weeks, and, over the terms, we have worked on lots of different projects from our action plans.

Our reduce and re-use clothing sale was a great way for families to have a wardrobe update and we loved recycling milk containers into fancy watering cans.

We planted out some areas of the school to make the school grounds look more colourful...and planted some spring bulbs.

Our club house is now being used after lots of clearing and sorting. There’s still so much more that we’d like to do.
