It’s getting closer by the day, and I’m talking turkey, (along with trees, tinsel and trimming-up!) as the whole wonderful Christmas season gathers momentum once more.

t’s at times like this that we’ll realise just what awful effects the Covid pandemic has had on everyone, having missed out on last year’s preparations and excitement. This month’s issue features many local restaurants and hostelries offering all manner of attractions for the festive weeks ahead, so remember to book early for your special events.

The Magical Christmas Fayre and Lights Switch On in Bourne on November 27th, alongside other similar events in neighbouring towns, will help add to this long-overdue feeling that things are now getting back to normal.

I was amused to see the BBC sending their man to report on the recent fuel shortages at our garages. His name … Phil McCann! Not to be outdone, however, we included in our October issue an advertisement for a “Front of House Manager” at a local hostelry who would “join the team and help create an exciting and stable future”. The pub just had to be … The White Horse at Baston! (Nay lad!)

Humour, it would appear, is fortunately all around, even though my monthly mirthful moments might make you think otherwise. So, while I’m on the subject, I recently asked the guy in the bookshop, “Any books on tortoises?” He said, “Hardback?” “Yes,” I replied, “and such a small head too”.

What To Do If Your

Energy Supplier Goes Bust With many energy suppliers going bust and others entering crisis as winter approaches, this month’s article takes you through some key information you need to know about getting a new supplier and what steps you should take.

It’s important that if your energy supplier does go bust, you avoid switching supplier. Ofgem will move you to a new supplier within a few weeks. If you haven’t heard from your new supplier within two weeks of being moved, contact them.

If you have an online account, it’s a good idea to log into it, check your balance and download any bills.

Before your new supplier contacts you, you should: ● take meter readings - it’s useful to take

a photo of your meter readings too

●

k eep any old bills you have - these can help prove your payment history, credit balance or debt

●

m ake a note of your account balance - you’ll find this on your most recent statement

If you don’t have an online account or can’t access it now, wait until your new supplier contacts you. They should be able to tell you how much credit you have or how much you owe them.

If you pay by direct debit, don’t cancel it straightaway. Wait until your new account is set up before you cancel it.

If you’ve already cancelled your direct debit, don’t try to set up a new one. Wait until your new supplier contacts you - they’ll help you set up a new account.

But it is also a popular time for rogue doorstep traders to inflict their own kind of winter misery on unsuspecting homeowners.

Trading Standards always advise to never accept an offer of work from cold callers who “happen to be in your area”. They will ask for cash up front, and it could well be for work which may be unnecessary, expensive, and sub-standard.

Don’t be fooled by business cards with websites and telephone numbers which look genuine. Politely take the card and say you will contact them at your convenience, should you need their services.

Also be very wary of leaflets – do your research first by checking their contact details or ask a family member or friend to do so on your behalf.

However, here are some simple but effective steps to take to winterproof your home and garden, and avoid a November nightmare: • The hot weather in the summer can cause uPVC doors and windows to expand and become misaligned. Check to ensure that you do not have any drafts, as a properly insulated home is an absolute must, especially with the increase in energy prices.

• Check all external pipes for breaks, leaks, and blockages including the insulation cladding around your boiler. Blocked or leaking pipes can freeze during the cold months, then expand and burst, causing potentially expensive water damage.

• Bleed your radiators to warm your property more efficiently.

• Get a boiler service from a professional.

• Clear out your gutters. Consider investing in gutter leaf guards to help prevent your gutters becoming blocked in future.

elling is a stressful time; we all know that! The process can be as daunting as when you bought your home. If you’re selling and, at the same time, buying another property, it can be even more stressful and complicated.

Once you have had your offer on your new home accepted, it’s a moment for celebration. But it’s not the end of your property journey. There are still several stages to complete before you’re the owner of your new home.

Appoint Your Solicitor.

If you have not already appointed a solicitor to carry out the conveyancing of your property purchase, do so as quickly as possible to keep the transaction moving. You’ll usually pay a deposit for the conveyancing fees, or you might pay a percentage upfront.

Secure Your Offer in Principle.

If you’ve already received an Agreement in Principle from your chosen mortgage provider, you’ll need to transfer this to an Offer in Principle. This is a confirmation of the exact amount the mortgage provider will be lending you.

To obtain this, you’ll need to provide your ID, proof of income (for example, three months of bank statements and a P60), deposit details, your solicitor’s details, and the property details. Your mortgage provider will run a full credit check (also known as a hard enquiry) on you, and your partner if you are buying as a couple.

Await the Property Valuation.

Your mortgage provider will arrange for a property valuation from a surveyor before they’ll approve your mortgage application.

This usually takes about two weeks, and costs between £150 and £1,500 (though this can typically be included in the total mortgage fees you pay).

Provide Additional Documentation.

It’s not unusual for a mortgage provider to request additional documents before finalising the loan arrangements. They might want to see your passport, payslips, or bank statements.

Receive a Formal Mortgage Offer.

Once your mortgage provider is satisfied that you can afford the mortgage you’ve applied for, they’ll make you a formal, signed offer through your solicitor. This can take up to around three weeks.

Sign the Contracts.

Your solicitor will invite you to sign the contracts for the property sale and exchange them with the seller’s solicitor.

“But I Am Different…”

I

write my articles every month and, on a fairly regular basis, people come up to me and say they enjoy them; some even say they read them every month! Many people will have constructive criticism; some may well ask a question. But invariably, the conversation will end with, “but of course that doesn’t apply to me I am different.”

Different how? The only people who will never need what we do are those of us who are immortal and, whilst I have read books that suggest they move amongst us (and even met a few who act as if they are!) I have never knowingly met an immortal!

But still the comment comes:

Medals Galore for Deepings Swimming Club

eepings S.C. welcomed competitors from Boston, Lincoln Trident, Grantham and South Lincs. at its annual Rob Welbourn Open Meet recently. The meet, named after Paralympic double gold medallist and former Deepings’ swimmer, Rob Welbourn, took place at Grantham Leisure Centre after the closure of Deepings Leisure Centre left the club without a permanent home and severely limited training time.

The lack of pool time, however, didn’t stop the squad of forty swimmers from having an outstanding competition, claiming fifty-five medals and numerous “personal bests”. Nineteen Deepings swimmers took home medals, as the club won six golds, twenty-two silvers and twenty-seven bronzes.

Standout gold medal-winning swims came from Harry Cardell, Isabella Reynolds, Holly Leggott and Jacob Briers. Other medals were gained by nineyear-old Ashton Hunter (the youngest member of the squad), Thomas Burdock, William Burdock, Jack Bell, Oliver Shepherd, Bailey Jackson-Chilvers, Harry Newman, Marcus Cook, Chloe Bellis, Eleanor Twinley, Eydee Chilvers, Sadie Hunter, Millie Herrick, Penny Baxter and Sophie Baskeyfield.

Deeping St James Community Primary School

ere at Deeping St. James, we are delighted to say that Mrs Day has begun her new role as an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) this term. Working with colleagues from other schools, she has begun a training programme, delivered by ‘Futures in Mind’, our local Educational Psychology Service providers, to help us better support all of our children.

ELSAs are emotional literacy support assistants.

They are teaching assistants who have had special training from educational psychologists to support the emotional development of children and young people in school. ELSAs have regular professional supervision from educational psychologists to help them in their work.

ELSAs help children and young people learn to understand their emotions and respect the feelings of those around them. They provide the time and space for pupils to think about their personal circumstances and how they manage them.

The majority of ELSA work is delivered on an individual basis, but sometimes small group work

is more appropriate, especially in the areas of social and friendship skills.

Sessions are fun; we use a range of activities such as games, role-play with puppets, or arts and craft. ELSA sessions take place in our ‘ELSA Room’ which aims to provide a calm, safe space for the child to feel supported and nurtured.

In ELSA, we aim to provide support for a wide range of emotional needs, including: • Recognising emotions • Self-esteem • Social skills • Friendship skills • Anger management • Loss and bereavement It has been a challenging period for us all and we are keen to support our children emotionally, as well as academically, to help them fulfil their full potential.

Deeping St Nicholas Primary School

C

ongratulations to six of our children for completing the Summer Reading Challenge at the Deepings Community Library. Recently, KS1 have been enjoying their farm topic; LKS2 have been learning about Stone Age Britain; and UKS2 have been learning all about the Battle of Britain.

Our Breakfast and After-School Clubs have been a great success; favourite activities have included baking cookies and ‘Movie and Popcorn Night’.

We also have ‘Sports2Day’ visiting us on Tuesdays.

KS2 children have been swimming at Bourne Leisure Centre. Children in UKS2 are learning how to play the ukulele and are really enjoying learning a new instrument. They also enjoyed a fabulous ‘Music Day’ with a visit from Lincolnshire Music Services.

We still have lots to look forward to. KS1 are having a visit from Farm Kitchen in November and will learn how to make curry. We also have ‘Bikeability’ sessions for UKS2 to teach them road safety, and ‘Balance Bike’ sessions for KS1 children to aid with coordination and balance.

Langtoft Primary School

This new academic year has finally seen a return to normal for the children of Langtoft Primary School with trips, visits and mixing with their friends across the school.

Northborough Primary School

Our Year 6 pupils have had their first-ever school residential in the Peak District. The children took part in climbing, zip-wires, a scrapheap challenge, laser tag and songs and roast marshmallows round the campfire, but the highlight had to be the raft building and jumping in the reservoir!

We all celebrated ‘Harvest’ at St Andrew’s Church and Year 3 went on a trip back in time to Flag Fen. Years 3 and 4 made a start on becoming safer cyclists with their ‘Bikeability’ course.

The school was also treated to a visit from Bobby Copping and mascot, Peter Burrow, from Peterborough United Football Club, with the children from the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 football teams taking part in a training session with the former professional player.

We have had a very busy start to the year! We welcomed new families and children to Northborough, and it is great to see how well they have settled.

We were very proud of the large numbers of pupils who took part in the Summer Reading Challenge. It was great to hear from the librarian that Northborough always have a large uptake of keen readers..

We are also very proud to have elected our Student Council, our Sports Ambassadors and our SOKE Ambassadors. All of these children were selected for the fabulous way they will represent themselves and our school. We can’t wait to see what they can offer!

We are looking forward to our forthcoming Apple Day and to hear what our Planet Protectors are going to teach us in their ‘Tree Champions’ assembly.

From Wine to Mineral Water

he red brick building with arched windows and a blanked-out plaque, which is now used by the charity SENSE in Church Street, Market Deeping, could easily be mistaken for a former chapel. In fact, it was a brewery built for the Stapleton family.

In 1828, Sarah Stapleton and her son Harvey moved into the adjoining house which had previously been a boarding school, to continue her late husband’s wine and spirit retail business. Soon afterwards, they started buying in large quantities of London Porter and Stout to re-sell by the barrel, kilderkin or dozen, (a kilderkin held 144 pints.) Dark, malty beers were popular at that time and in 1836 the Stapletons began brewing their own. They informed the public that any private families not able to brew for themselves could rely upon being supplied with the genuine article at a moderate price.

There was already a long-established brewery in the Market Place near the Bull Inn, but the Stapletons’ new venture prospered and was continued by later generations of the family for around seventy years.

During that time, they owned several local public houses, including the White Horse and Black Swan

The photograph taken in 1871 shows two of Harvey’s sons, Thomas and George Stapleton, wearing white coats, with a pile of beer barrels behind them. Note the tall brewery chimney which no longer exists, and the family’s name on the plaque. By 1900, Harvey’s eldest son, Valentine, was living in the brewery house.

He had a solicitors’ practice in Stamford, and his own son, Harvey was manager of the brewery.

Harvey junior was described as tall and handsome and an excellent man of business and pleasure.

His services as Best Man at friends’ weddings were much in demand, and after performing those duties ten times, he was presented with a gold medal in 1913! It was jokingly reported that “he almost lives in a frock coat and silk hat, so as to be ready in case of emergency.”

By that time, much larger breweries had taken trade away from family businesses, and the Stapletons had stopped brewing beer. They formed a link with mineral water manufacturers, Smith & Co. of Bourne, and non-alcoholic fizzy drinks were stored in the old brewery building. After Harvey enlisted in the First World War, all drink production on the site ended.

ver the past few years, injectable aesthetics treatments which reduce the signs of ageing, improve the appearance of the skin and define the contours of the face, have become increasingly popular. Fillers, Botox and skin boosters in particular are highly sought after. But what are they and how do they work?

Botox The word ‘Botox’ is just a brand name for a purified neurotoxin called Botulinum Toxin. Botulinum toxin is most commonly used to reduce and prevent the appearance of wrinkles of the frown, the forehead, the crow’s feet, and around the mid to lower face. It can also be used to create a ‘neck lift’ and reduce the appearance of a sagging neck and jowls.

When injected into a muscle, Botulinum toxin works by blocking the nerve signals to that muscle. This reduces muscle contraction. Therefore, wrinkles that have formed from this muscle contraction will soften and reduce.

Dermal Fillers There is a misconception that dermal fillers are ‘plastic’; however, this is not true. They are made of hyaluronic acid (HA) which is naturally found in our bodies. It keeps our skin plump and hydrated by attracting water. As we age, our skin loses volume and wrinkles form.

Dermal fillers can be injected into our bodies to replace this volume loss and to smooth out wrinkles.

They can also be used to enhance someone’s features, for example, to add projection to a flat chin, to add definition to a jawline, or to enhance the shape of the lips.

Fillers come in different consistencies depending on how the chemical chains of HA are cross-linked (bonded). The thinnest HA products are fluid in consistency as they are non-cross-linked. These are referred to as ‘skin boosters’ rather than ‘fillers’. The more premium skin boosters are packed with essential nutrients, antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, and amino acids. They are so thin that they do not change the shape of a face, but they are highly effective in improving the appearance and texture of the skin.

Thicker fillers are a gel-like consistency and enable us to add volume or re-shape areas which require this.

As with every aesthetics treatment there is a small risk of potential side effects, so it is important that your practitioner provides you with an in-depth consultation to fully explain the risks and aftercare.

id you know that we have the safest electrical sockets in the world, right here in the UK? Since the mid-1900s we have had unparalleled, pioneering, electrical socket designs in this country. If you look inside the terminals of your sockets, you will notice that you can only actually see into the top terminal; this is the ‘Earth’.

Inside, you’ll see a lever and if you were to push a plug in, this would activate two shutters that close the entrance to the ‘Live’ and ‘Neutral’, opening them to allow a plug to enter. We have absolutely no need for “safety socket covers” here, and in fact, these bypass the shutters, a fundamental safety feature of the world-leading design.

Even after years of educating people, I still regularly discover these little plastic contraptions everywhere, be it in homes or commercial premises (even in our very own town). What people don’t understand is that there is no British Standard for these, which means they’re completely unregulated and can even make the socket more unsafe.

Some are not the right size; this can cause damage to the shutters and sometimes even the terminals inside. If they are oversized, this can make them loose which can cause the connection to be poor and cause them to overheat, sometimes even scorching or melting the socket, or sometimes cracking the plate. Sometimes, the back of the

socket cover can be flexible; this can allow it to be put in upside-down, and in fact that acts like a tool to open the terminals and exposing the live parts.

By introducing an unnecessary element to the socket, you can potentially create a bridge. If you were to spill a drink on a normal socket with nothing in, it’s very unlikely that the drink will be able to get in as the shutters will stop it. However, if you were to spill a drink on a socket cover, there is more potential for the liquid to get into the socket.

I would really like to make the sockets in this town safer, so if you and your children send your disused (hopefully) socket covers to us in the post, with a little letter telling us that they promise not to play with sockets, then we will send back a little gift to thank them for being so sensible.

Baston C of E Primary School The Year 4 children were given the opportunity to participate in the ‘Outdoor Learning Day’ at Grimsthorpe Castle.

The children spent the day learning all about the estate and some of the exciting activities that happen there. We spent time with the gamekeeper, stonemason, stable hands, the Head Gardener, and the forestry team. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day. The children learnt so much!

In Year 3, we have had a fantastic start to the school year! We have created self-portraits by exploring what we look like on the inside and out, and made our own cave paintings in our outdoor learning lessons. We have really enjoyed being able to explore new books on our wonderful

library bus and have used practical methods in our maths lessons to consolidate our learning.

Year 6 visited Gunby Woods on the Buckminster Estate to have a ‘Maths Morning’. They calculated the age of trees by finding the circumference, besides using angles to estimate the height of them. They had a great morning outdoors and learnt a lot too.

Stamford’s Celebrity Designer Wants You to Steal the Show!

Anna d’Amato, the owner of ‘Anna Couture Boutique’ in Stamford, took the ambitious step in 2018 of opening ‘Anna Couture Brides’, a delightful property opposite The George Hotel on High Street, St. Martins. Barely two years since its arrival on Cheyne Lane, ‘Anna Couture Boutique’ had already become so popular, offering the latest stylish and glamorous ladies wear for all special occasions. Now the time was right to expand the business to become a beautiful design house, where Anna and her team of highlyskilled seamstresses now have room to work their magic.

A costume design graduate with a particularly enviable C.V, Anna has years of experience in costume design for both television and film, with anecdotes galore! For instance, she was Madonna’s seamstress for a year during her 2006 “Confessions” tour. Anna explains,“During my time making Madonna’s corsets, I had to sew up a fishnet stocking of hers while she was still wearing it, which was terrifying, (my needle was millimetres from her leg!)” She has produced costumes for blockbuster productions, including “Star Wars” and “The Phantom of the Opera”, and has worked with Gok Wan.

Deepings Business Community Hosts Superb Awards Night

T

he Deepings Business Awards 2021/22 presentation night was held at the Iron Horse Ranch House on September 25th, and what a great night it turned out to be! Organised by Deepings Business Community (DBC), with the headline sponsor being Moore Thompson Chartered Accountants, we had to limit ticket applications as we could only fit in one hundred and sixty, so apologies to all those who wanted to attend but could not.

We would love to have a venue in the Deepings that could hold two hundred and fifty for a sit-down meal and DBC will continue to lobby the local authorities on this matter.

Of the sixteen awards that were presented, fourteen were also sponsored by local businesses, (details of which can be found

on our website). Three thousand, six hundred members of the public cast over eighteen thousand votes (you can vote in more than one category).

The Chairman’s Award and the ‘Business of the Year’ were decided by the committee.

Many of the shortlisted businesses were present and, whilst they couldn’t all win, everyone gave a huge round of applause for the winners and runners-up. With a meal before the presentations and a band afterwards, a great evening was had by all, and we have received a huge amount of very positive feedback plus a few pointers that will help us improve even further for next year.

We were able to give £750 to two very worthy local charities too.

Loaded Spuds NOVEMBER NOSH

Recipe

Simple comfort food doesn’t, come in a finer form than a baked potato. Perfect after a cold night watching the fireworks!

Stuff them with bacon, cheese and soured cream and dig in!

Serves 4

Ingredients

Method

1 Heat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/gas 7.

Rinse the potatoes, then sprinkle all over with sea salt. Put the potatoes directly onto the oven shelf and bake for about 1 hour until crisp on the outside and soft inside when tested with a skewer.

4 baking potatoes Sea salt for sprinkling 100g bacon lardons

2 Meanwhile, fry the bacon lardons in a non-stick frying pan until crisp.

80g unsalted butter, cubed

3 Once the potatoes are ready, turn the oven to grill, remove the potatoes from the oven and transfer to a baking tray. Slice off the tops (hold the potatoes steady using a clean tea towel), then carefully scoop the soft potato centres into a bowl. Add the butter, 80g cheese and soured cream to the bowl and mix well.

Stir in the chives and lardons, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Stuff the cheesy filling back into the potato shells, then top with the extra cheese.

80g grated Cheddar, plus an extra 2 tbsp for topping 4 tbsp soured cream, plus extra to serve 1 tbsp chopped chives, plus extra to serve

4 Grill the potatoes for 10 minutes until golden and bubbling hot.

Serve with the extra soured cream and chives.

Autumn Nature Watch [ by David Denman ]

Our picture this month shows two hedgehogs having a good feed before their hibernation season. As this picture was taken four weeks ago, it is likely that both have now made their way into their winter nests to start their hibernation.

H

owever, hibernation does not mean a complete shutdown of all bodily systems for six months!

Hedgehogs do not have a complete hibernation. They normally wake up several times during the winter and often move to another nest site, taking some food and water before re-starting their hibernation.

Another animal seen locally, but one not needing to hibernate, is the otter. One of the sights of my summer was watching an otter in the Maxey Cut, late on a July evening. The noisy splash and the quick body turning at ease through the water kept us transfixed for five minutes as it hunted down fishy prey. The UK was down to very few otters in the late 1980s but, due to improvements affecting water quality, water management and pollution control, otters are, thankfully, now frequently seen once again in the UK. Back on land, and this autumn has been truly spectacular with an amazing show of golden and red leaves. The show of autumn colours has been particularly intense this year, due mainly to a succession of warm sunny days and cool, but not freezing, nights The fields have been very well populated with crows.

Large groups of rooks are especially abundant this time of year, probing the ground for bugs. They have white bases to their bills and are a very social species with a notable rookery in the centre of Market Deeping. If you see a black crow standing alone or in a group of two or three, these are carrion crows.

These are an all-black species and, although of a similar size to the rook, are solitary in nature.

Another crow, the jackdaw, is smaller with a grey neck and back of the head and can be heard noisily overhead throughout the Deepings at dusk, as they commute to their evening roost sites.

As well as the leaves, berries seem to have been in great abundance this year with hedgerows alive with bramble and hawthorn berries, sloes and rose hips. The sight of walkers armed with plastic bags and boxes taking fruit has been very common in recent weeks.

I always associate the windfall season with my time with English Nature in Peterborough, having to explain to the local media on several occasions why an apparently drunken badger had been spotted on a lane or in a garden in broad daylight.

The explanation is that badgers are omnivorous and will eat windfall, some of which can be a little too ripe, leading to unexpected autumnal hangovers!

Remembering

THE FALLEN Remembrance Sunday, which falls on November 14th this year, is a national opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those who have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.

W

e remember the Armed Forces, and their families, from Britain and the Commonwealth, the vital role played by the emergency services and those who have lost their lives as a result of conflict or terrorism.

National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph The National Service of Remembrance, held at The Cenotaph in Whitehall on Remembrance Sunday, provides the nation with a physical reminder of all those who have served and sacrificed, with British and Commonwealth soldiers, sailors, airmen and women represented, together with members of the emergency services and civilians.

It is expected that Prince William and Prince Harry will be laying wreaths on behalf of HM The Queen, alongside Members of the Cabinet, Opposition Party leaders, former Prime Ministers, the Mayor of London and other ministers.

Representatives of the Armed Forces, Fishing Fleets and Merchant Air and Navy will be there, as well as faith communities and High Commissioners of Commonwealth countries.

The Festival of Remembrance Every year the Royal British Legion hosts the annual Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, a commemorative event dedicated to all those who have served and sacrificed from Britain and the Commonwealth. To mark

one hundred years since the collective national Remembrance traditions came together for the first time, we will be remembering the military and civilian, the old and young, and the British and Commonwealth men and women who have fought wars, disasters and pandemics to protect and defend Britain.

This year, the RBL are working towards a fully realised Festival of Remembrance, which will be held on Saturday November 13th, with performances at 2pm and 7pm.

Poppy Appeal 2021 This year's Poppy Appeal launches on Thursday October 28th, with several ways to donate, including cash, contactless, text, or online via a QR code quick link. Every poppy makes a difference to the lives of our Armed Forces community. The RBL collectors have been at the heart of the Poppy Appeal for one hundred years, and as COVID-19 restrictions ease, they are back in local communities to raise vital funds for the Armed Forces community.
