High summer is now upon us, and the warm, dry weather outside has put a welcome smile upon many faces.

What’s more, however, is that it has helped to sweeten the bitter pill issued recently by the government, postponing the “final” easing of the Covid restrictions until Monday July 19th.

I

t means that almost seventy weeks will have passed since the initial “You must stay at home” announcement of March 2020! Life must go on … and it will, but whatever “normal” is going to look like or feel like later this month will be anyone’s guess. Social distancing and the masking of faces I suspect won’t be missed, but I hope that the attitudes of looking out much more for others and actually communicating more with other people will be a long-lasting legacy of this awful pandemic.

Everyone is eager for the “return to normality”, but some might say that we’re already there – England’s men are still more than capable of getting hammered at cricket, New Zealand following India’s lead on that front. Rain will most likely disrupt Wimbledon, before Novak Djokovic wins the men’s title again, and on the football field, “normality” could well rest on England’s penalty takers in the Euro 2020 tournament, but then again …

Finally, two to take your mind off the footy: Why is bread just like the sun? It rises in the yeast and it sets in the waist.

How about the guy who rubbed ketchup in his eyes when he was told that Heinz-sight is a wonderful thing?

Our Local Highwayman

A book relating Ratsey’s experiences.

n 1605, a Market Deeping man named Gamaliell Ratsey was called the most famous thief in England.

Ballads were sung about his exploits and two books were published, detailing his daring robberies and “mad pranks”. His wit and style set him above other criminals, and he often tricked people out of their money rather than threatening violence.

Ratsey operated around Huntingdon, Cambridge and in southern counties for several years, gaining notoriety and evading the law.

Although he carried a sword and once threatened a man with his own pistol, he was not known for harming victims.

The Ratseys were a respectable family and Gamaliell had been well educated, but in 1599, parish accounts show a payment for transporting him to Lincoln gaol. Later that year, he became a soldier and served in Ireland but, on returning to England in 1603, he immediately went back to criminal ways. After being gaoled in Spalding for theft, he fled to London and teamed up with another Market Deeping man, Henry Shorthose (who had fallen into debt), and a hardened criminal named George Snell.

On one occasion, they robbed a group of nine men who were riding across Helpston Heath. Shorthose and Snell hid in a copse while Ratsey convinced the travellers they risked losing their lives or limbs unless they handed over £200. Sometimes, he gained the trust of his intended victims by appearing to be a gentleman.

He would be mounted on a high-quality horse (previously stolen) while his accomplices rode in front and behind like servants. They stayed overnight at inns, identifying fellow travellers who were worth robbing and the direction they were riding, then set off in advance and waylaid them.

On one occasion, his gang barely escaped capture when trying to rob a Bedford man who proved “very stout and valiant” and successfully fought them off.

Shortly afterwards, George Snell was arrested for a different crime and, in the hope of obtaining leniency, he revealed where Ratsey could be found. Henry Shorthose was betrayed by a Deeping St James man, and all three were imprisoned in Newgate. They were taken to Bedford for trial, found guilty and hanged there in March 1605.

The term “highwayman” was not used in Gamaliell Ratsey’s lifetime, but he has the distinction of being one of first men to gain fame from that activity. A legend grew that he used to wear a hideous mask like a hobgoblin, but contemporary accounts never mentioned a disguise.

However, it is unlikely that he was a folk hero to Market Deeping ratepayers. Even after his death, they had to pay a series of fines imposed by the justices for his crimes!

I

n this age of being always “switched on”, it’s great to take a moment to unwind and immerse yourself in nature. Wildlife in The Deepings [ by David Dedman ]

The quiet winter months are now past and gardens, fields and hedges are alive with the sights and sounds of wildlife we have missed so much during the long winter period.

T

he screams of the swifts as they fly around houses in the Deepings is always something I look forward to and they are now back in numbers. We had a swift’s nest under our eaves last year and they lived up to the description in the textbooks as being very quiet nesters. Only by watching a tiny gap between the gutter and the eaves intently in the evening was a nest detected.

They would visit their nest site irregularly during the day - an impossibly quick black crescent hurtling towards the gap just folding its wings in time to enter and disappear from sight. These are the same wings that carried them back to the UK from Africa every year. Around fifteen minutes later, the bird would drop out of the eaves and plummet to the ground only to accelerate over the grass and over the garden fence away into the sky.

They are true birds of the air and sleep and mate on the wing, with a quite ridiculous top speed of 69mph!

The fields around the Deepings are great for yellowhammers, and the yellow flash of a bird in a hedge is almost certainly going to be a yellowhammer. They are hedgerow specialists and use them for nesting and also as a perch for performing their song which is likened to “a little bit of bread and no cheese”.

Yellowhammers are not having a good time of it at the moment so please put your dogs on a lead during the nesting season – yellowhammers nest near the bottom of hedges so are very vulnerable to disturbance.

Looking down rather than up, take a minute to look at the nectar feeders.

Amongst the white cow parsley flower heads there is usually a whole community of flies, beetles, bees, wasps and bugs. But be careful! What looks like a busy furry bee may be an imposter! Nature is full of creatures pretending to be something else.

The hairy “wannabee” bees are mainly large hoverflies that pretend to be bees – same colours, same loud buzzing and behaviour. However, a closer look reveals only one pair of wings and a different type of antenna. All flies have one pair of wings, not the two pairs that bees and wasps have.

For a party trick, you can amaze your friends by sexing most species of hoverflies. The males are “holoptic”, i.e. their eyes meet at the top of their heads whilst the eyes of females are separated at the top of their heads!

Natural history is best enjoyed, not by knowing the answers, but by asking the questions.

Potato Salad A summer staple, the Jersey Royal potato is an excellent choice for this tasty, yet oh-so-simple potato salad... perfect for all those barbecues!

Ingredients

1kg Jersey Royal potatoes 200g smoked bacon lardons 4 large spring onions, thinly sliced ½ cup mayonnaise ½ cup sour cream Salt and pepper to taste

1 Place your potatoes in a pan of salted water and bring to the boil, turn down to a simmer and leave to cook until they are just tender. Drain the potatoes and leave them to cool completely.

2 In a frying pan, fry your bacon until crispy and then also leave to cool.

3 Once your potatoes are cold, cut them into thick slices. Place them in a bowl with the mayonnaise, sour cream, bacon and spring onions. Fold everything together gently until well mixed and then season to taste. Serve and enjoy!

Cub Scouts Gain Top ‘Green Badge’ Award

Over the last few months, the Deepings Apache Cub Scouts have been completing a number of challenges, such as learning about different plastics and how to reduce and recycle, reducing their energy usage and also looking after their natural environment.

All their hard work was nationally recognised on World Environment Day, with them being presented with their Blue Peter Green Badge.

Normally, young people have to apply individually, but this year they launched a special eco-challenge which enabled groups to take part and apply. Heidi Latronico-Ferris, Apaches’ Leader, said, “We wanted to show our Cubs that the little things do, and can, make a difference.

We were also able to make the childhood dreams of gaining a Blue Peter Badge possible for our leaders as well, as for the first time, it wasn’t just limited to the children!”

DOG SHOW IS BACK!

On Saturday August 14th, Deeping St Nicholas Church will be hosting their third “All About Dogs - Fun Dog Show”, where beautiful dogs of all ages, shapes, sizes and varieties, (including “Heinz 57”) along with their owners, are all welcome!

There will be twelve classes, the winner of each class being automatically entered into the ‘Best in Show’ round, where they could win a magnificent trophy. Classes range from ‘Puppy 6-12 months old’ through to ‘Best Junior Handler’. There will be an entrance fee to each class, with rosettes awarded to first, second and third places.

Various stalls and some dog agility/obedience classes will be held, along with veterinarians giving advice on doggie (and owners’!) wellbeing, and some charities looking to rehome dogs.

Local School Sees Rapid Change

inchfield Community Primary is a mainstream school and pre-school, based in Deeping St James. The school officially joined C.I.T last September.

The Community Inclusive Trust (C.I.T Academies) is a multi-academy chain that challenges and supports its academies to provide the highest levels of education and care for their pupils. The Trust currently has fifteen academies across the East Midlands.

The Trust has been supporting Linchfield since May 2019. The school has made significant progress since, and the Trust continues to work with the Linchfield team to ensure further positive development of the school.

Katie Brockington, an experienced Headteacher, has joined the team: “I am delighted to have joined Linchfield Community Primary School and Pre-School, and excited to have the opportunity to work alongside and support such a dedicated team of staff, fantastic pupils and parents, in such a lovely setting.

I have been in the teaching profession for over eighteen years and have enjoyed a variety of roles and responsibilities, including Class Teacher, EYFS Lead, Phonics Lead, Assistant Headteacher and Headteacher.

I have a real passion for learning, and I believe that all children should be given the opportunity to achieve their full potential, whatever that might be, and to be fully prepared for the next stage of their lives.”

Katie and her team of staff, along with input from the pupils, have launched a new set of school values, and have revised their School Behaviour Policy.

The staff have been developing the learning environment at Linchfield School too, and have worked hard to ensure that the setting is welcoming, inspiring and motivating for everyone. The school values and celebrates the children’s work and provides the right prompts and resources to enable them to be independent and enthusiastic learners.

The school now uses ‘Accelerated Reader’, an excellent system used to measure both children’s ability to read and their comprehension skills too.

Katie added, “The pupils are thoroughly enjoying choosing their own books at their own level and quizzing on the books they have read to check their understanding. Our goal at Linchfield is to provide an outstanding education for our pupils. These are exciting times for the school.”

Plans for the future include promotion of the love of reading, continuing to develop a stimulating learning environment and offering a full and varied curriculum to meet the interests and needs of all of the children attending Linchfield Community Primary and Pre-School.

Baston CE Primary School

W

e have settled back into school nicely since our return in March.

Everything is slowly getting back to normal and we are all enjoying being back together again.

Year 5 have been learning about how to use a pulley system. In Forest School, they worked in teams to create a team flag and their own working pulley system for a flagpole.

Year 6 have been using the forest area to perform scenes from “Macbeth”.

During the last week of May we celebrated Sports Week. We had activities run by Inspire +, Elite Academy, Premier Sports, LDC and Robbie Tyler-led sessions on Tang Soo Do. We also held our Sports Day where we held traditional races for the whole school.

Our amazing PTA funded an inflatable bungee run and human table football which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

We ended the week with a Race for Life where we raised over £900 for Cancer Research. This was a special activity as our very dear and valued colleague and Teaching Assistant, Mrs Parkin, has been fighting cancer this year.

William Hildyard C of E Primary and Nursery School This year, the children have been following the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’ programme, which encourages positive thoughts and feelings, through five simple steps that everyone can do every day. The steps are - connecting with others, being active, taking notice of the world around you, learning something new and giving to others.

As part of the programme, the children have been reflecting on the Covid-19 pandemic, celebrating the heroes of the last year and thinking of ways that they themselves can help others. Mr Lucas said, “Research shows that children who are interested in helping others are more likely to feel happy themselves.” The children used art to express their ideas about the pandemic and their art has been entered into the Royal Mail Heroes Stamp Design competition.

The staff at William Hildyard would like to give their heartfelt thanks to all the families who took on the difficult job of home-schooling during lockdowns. Home schoolers are our heroes!

Our Breakfast Club and After-School Club are now back, and we have a new member join the team. Welcome Mrs McCann!

The Halls have created a picnic area, close to the petting pens, and with parking space and toilet facilities on hand, they are hoping for the general public to come flocking! (but please leave the dogs at home).

Tracey has no doubts about the benefits to be gained from such an exposure to our hairy/furry/ feathered friends. Young children will no doubt find the offering at Tiny Steps Farm irresistible, but other groups of people too,

atering is so important this month and it is better to water crops frequently and generously, as intermittent watering can cause problems with flowers falling, fruits failing to form, skins splitting and premature bolting.

Watering at the beginning or end of the day is preferable, and spreading a mulch will help to slow down evaporation and suppress weeds.

Have you tried growing edible flowers in amongst the vegetables? Not only do they provide colour in cooking, but also attract beneficial insects. Examples of flowers to grow are borage, nasturtium, viola, chives, lavender, marigold and calendula.

Although it is getting late for sowing and planting, there are still a few crops that can be planted: • Lettuce, rocket and a variety of salad leaves –succession sow for an ongoing supply in the autumn.

• Fast-growing varieties of peas, beetroot and carrots.

• Florence fennel.

• Plant out your leeks, cabbage, cauliflowers, Brussels, broccoli and kale for autumn and winter cropping, using the space created by lifting onions, garlic and early potatoes.

Other jobs to do in the vegetable patch: • Poor potato crops are the result of poor nutrition, so try feeding potatoes with a tomato feed. Also, check

the potato plants and earth-up, if necessary, to prevent the tubers going green from exposure to light.

• When climbing beans have reached the top of the canes, pinch out the growing tip.

• Strawberries will finish fruiting, so tidy up old foliage and cut off runners or use them to produce new plants.

• Earth up brassicas to give them a firm hold in the soil and give them a top dressing of nitrogenous fertiliser or an organic liquid feed.

• Nip off the side shoots of your tomatoes; they appear in the “v” between leaf stems and main stems, and when there are four or five trusses, pinch out the growing tip of the plant to allow the fruit to ripen. Water them with a liquid feed as soon as the first fruits are formed.

Likewise for peppers.

• Ensure that peas and brassicas are netted to keep off the pigeons.

• Plant potatoes ready for Christmas; garden centres usually stock the winter varieties.

• It is time to harvest garlic and onions: a few days before you do this loosen the soil around the roots, choose a dry spell, lift the bulbs and lay them on the ground in the sun to dry them out as the more thoroughly they are dried out, the longer they will keep.

here are 351,000 children aged seventeen years or under in the UK who are living with a learning disability. Maybe one lives with you. If they do, you might want to consider what you need to do to protect their interests as they get older.

One of the conversations we have most often is “Who makes decisions for my child?”

The answer is like so many – it depends! If you do nothing, then technically your parental responsibility ends on their eighteenth birthday and your ‘newly minted’ adult child becomes the responsibility of your local adult social care team. For most people, this is not ideal, and the transition from children’s services into adult care is difficult.

However, it doesn’t have to be that way; you can make provision to keep control of decisions that relate to your child.

What you need to do depends on your child’s abilities and their assets. It might be something as simple as applying to be an appointee to deal with their benefits; it might well be a case of putting Lasting Powers of Attorney in place; or you may need to apply to the courts to become a Deputy to manage your child’s affairs.

All of the options have different criteria, costs and levels of complexity, so you need to know which option is best for your circumstances, and those of your child.

o you know who is coming to value your home and who may be selling it for you? When booking an estate agent to value your home, spend a little time doing some research.

Some of the larger agents operate under what they call “one umbrella”, which means that they are in fact all owned by the same company, but just operate under different names, so generally they will have the same process, be operating in the same areas, and things like contracts will be very similar, having the same tie-in periods (up to six months), fee arrangements, cost for additional advertising (floorplans, photos etc), alongside various other terms and conditions.

You could have agents A, B and C out to value your home to find that they are all essentially under the same umbrella, offering the same services.

From a position of bias, I am a massive advocate for the independent agent, as we operate on the basis of really getting to know our vendors, their motivation for moving, whilst also trying to help with their own property search, as well as secure them a buyer that can proceed to completion. We ensure that they are treated like the most important person in the process, because they are!

Whilst going with a name that you know seems like it provides comfort, it doesn’t always provide results.

It’s not about who has been around the longest, it’s about choosing the right agent for you, one who will sell your home and also provide the service you deserve as the homeowner.

hen you apply for a mortgage, how much you can afford may seem like a mystery.

There is no secret behind the outcome, just a simple formula.

Here are the factors lenders consider

for your affordability.

• YOUR INCOME is still used to consider what you can afford. You’ll need to prove how much your income is and how it is broken down i.e. salary, overtime, bonuses, commission, pension, benefits and allowances. Some lenders will only take a portion of non-regular income – finding the right one for your income is the key to your affordability.

• YOUR CREDIT SCORE is checked with a Credit Reference Agency before agreeing to lend. Your score will reflect any issues in the last six years, such as defaults, County Court Judgements, ‘Individual Voluntary Arrangements’ or bankruptcy. These issues will affect whether a lender will lend, how much they will lend and the interest rate.

• YOUR DEPOSIT demonstrates a certain level of financial responsibility. A higher deposit also lowers the lender’s risk. The more you have saved, the more you’ll be able to borrow.

• YOUR OUTGOINGS are taken into consideration; lenders consider how much you spend on essentials such as: food, household products, bills, debts, car/ travel, insurances and medical items.

• FUTURE OUTGOINGS are considered in your affordability. They’ll consider the likelihood of various circumstances occurring, including redundancy, serious illness or the birth of a baby. If you’re pregnant or you have children, the cost of raising children will be reflected in your borrowing.

• FUTURE INTEREST RATE changes could impact your affordability. Based on lender assumptions, they will check your income after your essential outgoings and spending to ensure funds are available to pay if your rate raises.

Pension Credit Recent research by Age UK highlights that, in the areas of South Lincolnshire, there are as many as 3,500 eligible people that are missing out on Pension Credit. In what has been an exceptionally difficult time for many people, this support can give those who are eligible an income boost. Depending on savings levels, there may also be extra financial support available.

This support may include other helpful extras such as a free television licence, help with glasses and contact lens prescriptions, help with hospital transport costs, a cold weather discount on energy bills, help with housing benefit and Council Tax, help with ground rent and an added premium for people with disabilities and people who are carers.

Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire can provide information and advice around Pension Credit, including eligibility, payment rates, and a thorough overview of any extra support that you may receive as a result of getting the benefit.

We can also advise you on any other issues such as overpayments, mandatory reconsiderations and the appeals process.

Protect Your Garden from Green-fingered Thieves this Summer

By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades During lockdown, our gardens have become more important than ever, as we have grown our own vegetables, added decorative lighting and ornaments, invested in furniture, and splashed out on hot tubs and outdoor bars.

But when considering our outdoor space and belongings, how many of us pay the same attention to garden security as we do our own home? Did you know that nine out of ten household thefts occur in the garden – with our best outdoor furniture, garden ornaments, power tools and ornaments, barbecue and ladders among the top items?

Here are some simple precautions: • Take a walk around your garden and check things that may be appealing to a thief – an unlocked back gate or shed (particularly if the shed contains expensive garden tools/machinery or bikes).

• Get a reputable locksmith to secure gates and sheds.

• Lock away ladders or anything which could be used to gain entry to your home.

• CCTV surveillance will allow you to view your garden and any unwelcomed activity from your home.

• Install some sensory/outdoor lighting.

• Alarm the garage to provide additional security or think about installing garage roller shutter doors.

• If your fencing is flimsy, broken panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in some new and improved fencing or panels.

• Pack away out of sight any garden tools or equipment. Even if you take a break from cutting the front lawn, keep your mower out of reach of opportunist thieves.

• Secure expensive plants with wire pegs dug into the ground around the root ball.

• Use a security pen to mark items like garden furniture, ornaments or trampolines, with your postcode.

• Consider defensive planting like prickly hedges or shrubs.

I believe that this is one of the key reasons for having this friendly, family atmosphere.

hroughout the summer, the Stamford Shakespeare Company presents a season of plays at the stunning Rutland Open Air Theatre. The following reminiscences came recently from Peter Leaton, (now a Bourne resident) after having read the “Quest for Pure Water” feature in our May issue. Peter, who turns 83 on July 17th, tells us he was born in “Hossget” (or Horsegate, Deeping St James, as non-locals would have it!)

He writes, “Very interesting article re Deeping Flooded. I remember sitting in class at the old Cross School when the water came flooding into the classroom. The area between Deeping and Crowland resembled a large lake. Longer than normal Easter Hols for us kids!!!

Remember Mr Robinson well; he was an ace totter and we kids had to keep the right side of him as he was the Water Bailiff and we were apt to break the rules.”
