Introduction

Welcome to your October Issue Welcome to October’s issue. Just when some of us thought it was safe to call ourselves “empty-nesters” as our last teenagers head off to university, a warning has been issued, claiming that the present financial uncertainty has prompted almost 60% of UK students to consider dropping out of their university degrees. With some students returning or going to university for the first time around now, pressure and financial support group SavetheStudent claims that increasing numbers are deeply concerned their finances won’t stand the pressure of such uncertain times! Oh well, there will be plenty of jobs around the house and garden to keep them busy … oh no, they’ve already been done during the lockdown. Brace yourselves, “Bank of Mum and Dad”! Anyway, as ever, there’s plenty here to keep all of your family informed and entertained, and don’t forget to change your clocks (“Spring forward, Fall back”), as we lose the hour on Sunday October 25th.

This month’s issue combines the usual sparkling array of articles from our team of dedicated contributors. It gives us great pleasure to know that there are so many individuals who put in so much effort to ensure that their monthly contribution is not only relevant and topical, but also that it appears in such a way that you, our readers, will find it useful and, hopefully, entertaining. As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to run its tragic course, this caught my eye recently. A man was seen using a live snake as a face covering on a bus from Swinton into Manchester. Transport bosses said passengers can make their own face covering or wear something suitable, such as a scarf or bandana, adding, “We do not believe it extends to the use of snakeskin - especially when still attached to the snake.” And finally, last week I put up a world map on the kitchen wall, gave my wife a dart and said, “Throw this and wherever it lands - that’s where I’m taking you when this pandemic is all over.” Just our luck … two weeks behind the fridge! Enjoy the read!

Will & Probate Services

Duties of a Dad

ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING DIRECTOR AT WILL AND PROBATE SERVICES

T

here’s nothing to make one feel responsible, all of a sudden, like the birth of a child; it is one of the most amazing, wonderful things you’ll ever experience.

Your partner has been carrying your baby for months and you’ve tried to support her as much as possible. The labour, though? I remember feeling useless, seeing my wife go through so much pain and not being able to help. In fact, in my panic, I hindered her, encouraging her to push when she was supposed to be panting! And while you understood, as a concept, that at some point the bump would become a child, nothing can prepare you for that punch of love when you hold your baby in your arms for the first time. You are suddenly responsible for this tiny person! The maternity ward feels safe but driving home with a passenger in the baby seat is frightening. Back home, you and your partner are in charge – flying alone. It’s exhilarating but suddenly all the rules have changed and it’s bewildering too. You’re a grown-up. And, as a grown-up, it’s time to ask yourself some grown-up questions and make some adult decisions … and to plan for your child’s future by writing a will. You and your partner are going to have to ask yourselves that most terrifying of questions: Who will look after our child if something happens to us? It’s a horrible but, tragically, very real situation for the 24,000 children a year who experience the death of a parent (source: Winston’s Wish). There’s a common assumption that your next-of-kin will automatically be granted guardianship of your

children, should you die but, if both parents pass away and there’s no valid will and therefore no legally appointed guardian, children will be a “ward of court” until the courts decide who they live with. Thankfully, while the thought of your child being all alone makes your hearts lurch, reassurance is at hand.

Writing a will allows you to:● Decide

who will look after your children should something happen to you.

● Ensure

your children will be educated in the way you want them to be.

● Feel

secure in the knowledge there won’t be any family disputes or court battles over who cares for your children.

● Be

confident your children will receive their full inheritance.

Then, will written and adult responsibilities undertaken, you can relax into being a father – it’s the most life-affirming experience ever! Making the right will can cost as little as £199. For more information, please contact us at 01778 382723 or advice@will-probate.co.uk.

Health

Behind the Mask... BY CLAIRE GRAY, OWNER OF RENU

Our face is the most memorable thing about us.

I

t reflects our mood, our age, our health, our personality, and some people even believe its shape can define our personality type. It is such a shame that in this “new normal” world, we now spend so much of our time with it hidden behind a mask!

If they are re-usable, wash them at 60 degrees and dry thoroughly.

2

It is even more important you follow a thorough cleansing routine daily. Cleanse twice. Tone once.

Whilst a mask is becoming increasingly important for the safety and well-being of others, it is yet another reason to make sure we are taking special care of our skin.

When your face is open to the elements, it needs protection against pollution, air conditioning, UV rays and free radicals. On the positive side, wearing a mask can sometimes help you protect your face against the elements.

3

Wearing a mask slows the skin renewing itself. This is a disaster with regard to the ageing process, managing breakouts and keeping a bright complexion. Exfoliate twice a week and invest in a facial, specific to your needs every four to six weeks. We offer specific facials for every budget for men and women.

4

Use the right skin care. It is even more important that your skin is protected against the elements and whatever is lurking inside your mask. Our therapists can help you find the right skin care for your specific needs. This is also a great time to purchase, as there are lots of extra value packs available.

Unfortunately, masks will also restrict the skin’s ability to “breathe” and whilst they can protect you from passing on viral germs, they will also harbour bacteria and germs on your face. This can result in dry, blotchy skin, more frequent breakouts, and an uneven complexion.

5

Here are my top tips to make sure you reveal a beautiful, healthy skin under your mask:

6

1

Resist the habit of keeping a mask in your bag and repeatedly putting it on and off. Have several and use a clean mask every time.

Skin repairs at night. Whatever we have put our face through during the day, it will take the time to try and repair itself at night. Day care is about protection. Night care is about repair and rejuvenation. Use a good quality night balm, specific to your skin’s needs and it will drink it up overnight. Smile with your eyes. We may not be able to show our sunny smile from behind our mask, but we can smile with our eyes! So, keep them in tip top condition using a daily eye cream and grooming your eyebrows and lashes!

BOOK A DECLEOR PRESCRIPTIVE PERFORMANCE FACIAL IN OCTOBER... receive a £10 voucher redeemable against any product over £30 A 75-minute targeted facial using advanced specialist product to show results from the very first treatment.

Health

We Cannot Be Distanced from

Words

While physical ‘distance’ is the order of the day, we cannot be distanced from words. So, let me shift for once from the benefits of exercising the body by moving to talk about the magnificent menagerie of our minds.

Words

The very origin of structured communication. Books, poems, lyrics, articles, reviews, studies… information; to be digested for the purposes of pleasure, entertainment, escape, or used to be informed, or to be educated. One thing I have always loved to do is write. It is a means to convey one’s ideas, opinions and imagination. A way to focus energy and to constructively channel whatever thought or feeling is being experienced on any given day. In any given moment. A way to capture mood and to be able to recall it on a page thereafter. A tool, an instrument, a means to document the present, speak of the past and paint perceptions of the future, whether in stark,

12

Deepings

statistical scientific fact, or in the fantasy, flair and festival of creative, colourful storytelling. A means to move people to emotion. Words it seems to me have more importance now than ever before. Initially, the written word, which of course holds the powerful potential to become the spoken word. Spoken as a means of communicating to groups of people for information, spoken in the form of a story we read to our children or even sung as your favourite song. Right now, I spend my time digesting the written word in two primary ways. Firstly, by reading the news from a number of different, corroborated, reliable sources as a means to understanding how I navigate myself, my family our business and our customers safely through the pandemic, and secondly by reading books

OCT OBE R 2 0 2 0

Health to our two-year-old son. Anything from the ABC to the Gruffalo, Winnie the Pooh, and Zog the Dragon. I enjoy the latter far more! Indeed, to experience the way in which reading the written word in the form of a children’s book to our son allows him to completely immerse himself in an imaginary moment, is to learn a valuable lesson. If we choose to be, we are totally in control of where our minds take us. We have an obligation to read about and understand how to be responsible to ourselves and our communities in the context of the global pandemic, but equally, in order to gift ourselves the balance of mental health, we have the opportunity to take our minds to places of our choosing. We can read. Or indeed, we can write. A passion for one will certainly promote the likelihood of the other.

So again, I come back to my passion to write. And I am going to do something with it. Yes, I am writing. Something creative, which for now will remain a secret but in time I look forward to sharing my creation. And it fills me with excitement and a feeling of creative purpose. And there lies the balance we all need.

Words it seems to me have more importance now than ever before

And I don’t mean the news feed on your chosen social media app. I mean, we can decide to go in a direction of our own choosing. It may be the magical wizarding world of Harry Potter, the autobiography of your favourite sportsperson, or even ‘A Brief History of Time’ by the late great Professor Stephen Hawking, but the inside of our minds and the worlds that exist there are subject to none of the physical restrictions of the time. No ‘lockdown’ can ever lock down your mind and imagination. Rather the opposite is true. Time to reflect is an opportunity. Ideas, creations, plans, metaphorical seeds planted by freeing our minds to read, learn, write and create now, will serve the world well in a future that still holds infinite optimism. We also owe it to generations new and to come to extol the massive importance of the art and tradition of using skilled language as the means to communicate and create. To ‘tweet’ or to ‘post’ may have its place, but it cannot be ‘in-place’ of a more

considered way of writing and reading.

There is a catharsis in writing that is absolutely unique. It needs no permission and has no boundary. It can become whatever your creative mind can perceive. In many ways the very opposite of the narrative of immediate times. I’ve always known that perspective and context are powerful in appreciating some of the things we can on occasion take for granted. But so, it is true.

Never more important are words of magic, hope, adventure, possibility, peace, love, family and tranquillity than when they are threatened by matters new. So, let’s take this adversity and let’s think about how it makes us feel. And maybe you can write it down. Maybe there is a thought, a poem, a passage, a world waiting to be created that lives within you that can fill a page for others who need such escape. Let’s bring back the art of words. Let’s communicate with deep creative passionate meaning. Whether to describe the day, to remember the values of the past that could serve us so well now, or to write our imaginings of hope. The Hundred-Acre Wood cannot be the only such place where we can sit, be happy and eat ‘hunny’. There are thousands of acres in our own minds to be discovered and to be shared! Be happy. Much love.

The Little Soft Play Company For Those Magical Early Years

T

he role of play in a young child’s early years is enormous – the exploring, the learning and having fun are crucial for their physical and social development. Local mother of two, Sam CrosbyStockwell was well aware of this when bringing up Zachary and Paige, and was finding soft play hire in the local area, which encompasses all of these things, problematic. Last year, Sam decided not to return to the corporate world after maternity leave, feeling a huge desire to remain at home just that little bit longer to enjoy those magical ‘early-learning-years’. That was when this ‘stay-at-home’ mum created The Little Soft Play Company, serving Bourne, the Deepings, Stamford and surrounding areas. Sam explains her mission: “Every child has their own unique personality; they develop at different stages, prefer to play and learn in different ways and cope with social situations differently too. Recognising this, I have designed my

play areas to embrace children’s uniqueness and provide them with the tools to play in a way that they most enjoy. “My packages are made up of everything I wished was there when I was searching for soft play hire - something suitable for babies and toddlers (up to the age of four) - delicate colour schemes, beautiful materials, iconic traditional toys and sensory resources to motivate children to explore different textures, shapes and mechanisms. From crawlers to walkers, from sitters to roamers, each of my packages has something for every little one to explore.” “Little Soft Play packages are safe for hire at home or at venues, and have the highest hygiene and sanitisation standards before, during and after the hire” Please refer to Sam’s Instagram/Facebook pages for further information regarding packages or call Sam directly on 07944 767194.

The Future - Uncertain Times

T

STRENGTH IN COMMUNITY

he scale and impact of Covid-19 is unlike anything known in modern times. There remain life-changing questions around delays in NHS treatments, Covid testing, education, business closures and job losses, mental health needs and a possible second wave, to name but a few. Could you ever have imagined a scenario like that just a year ago? At local level, the Deepings and local villages demonstrate a stalwart resilience, a powerful sense of community. People have come together, as they always do across the Deepings, and taken action to support fellow community residents. Community groups have battled to raise money for local charities. Online events are running, and re-grouping has delivered support services, albeit in a new ‘Covid-compliant’ way. Some local business sectors are faring well, such as local food/gardening outlets and gardening services. Many people are looking to develop their outside spaces, and fewer people are taking holidays, not just because of Covid and the travel restrictions, but also uncertainty around employment and income. Other business sectors are facing more uncertain times. Many families will have family members facing uncertainty around employment and concerns about paying the bills. Examples of local businesses impacted include; entertainment, the Arts, hospitality, beauty, fitness and small, local retailers.

From week to week, information changes, but one thing remains constant … THE VALUE OF COMMUNITY; the value of LOCAL; we the people; the relationship we have with where we live and with each other. We have that here, across the Deepings and the villages, in abundance! Why? Possibly because we connect and care about where we live, and where we live makes a difference to our quality of life. Each one of us helps shape our community, in the decisions we make and the interactions we have. Certainly, by connecting, supporting LOCAL and each other. What a great place to live – long may the sense of ‘COMMUNITY MATTERS’ continue! Take care everyone and keep safe. #supportlocal #lovedeepings.

We have seen a massive shift to buying online and a move away from High Streets, potentially resulting in 16

local job losses and ultimately closures.

Your Garden

October Gardening Tips

L

et’s hope October brings us some fine weather to start clearing the garden or allotment and preparing it for the colder months ahead. In fact, most of the work this month involves clearing the plot, plenty of digging, and composting debris. Rough dig over heavy ground and leave it to be broken down by the frosts. Keep off the soil if it is wet and do not be tempted to dig if it is frozen. Remember... clocks back on October 25th! Harvest or protect any remaining crops that are susceptible to frosts and clear away any remaining debris and place on the compost heap: the larger the quantity, the better as this helps the heap to warm up and accelerates the rotting process. It is advisable to shred or pulverize thick, woody stems such as sweetcorn, beans, and brassicas so that they decompose more quickly. Do not put any diseased foliage on the compost heap; burn or discard it. Lift main crop potatoes before the end of the month and then store in a cool, dark place: I went to the chip shop and asked them for their used paper potato sacks. October is perfect for dividing large oversized crowns of rhubarb. If established plants are left indefinitely, they do eventually produce less each year. Cut up and divide the crowns into good sized pieces, making sure each has signs of dormant buds and, as it is not a fussy plant, it can be planted almost anywhere, so long as the ground does not get waterlogged. It is also the perfect time for moving or planting new fruit bushes and trees.

Bare-rooted trees will benefit from the warmth still left in the soil. Crops that can be sown this month are: • Early broad beans. • Japanese over-wintering onion sets. Although large onion sets look stronger, small or medium ones are less likely to bolt in the spring. • Last chance to transplant spring cabbages – be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves. • Plant garlic. • Broad beans – early varieties should overwinter. Other jobs for this month include: • Continue to earth up celery and leeks. • Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd. • Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries. • Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas – leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould. • If you have not already done so, earth up or stake (or both) Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants. • Pick the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana – this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening. • Cure pumpkins and squashes – cut and leave them to dry out in the sun; it hardens the skins and they will keep for longer. • Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost. • Remove runner bean canes; if left in the ground they will easily rot. Happy gardening!

How To Move By Christmas

M

BY PAUL BRIGGS

any people whose property is on the market now would ideally like to move by Christmas, yet only those who are prepared to price realistically are likely to be successful. Buyers who are currently active in the market are now getting increasingly keen to move before the end of the year, and we have recently noticed a significant ramping-up of activity.

they will always buy the property that offers them the best value in relation to alternatives available nearby.

Despite this increase in activity, your choice of agent is paramount as too many agents are currently making rash promises. If you are selling, beware of the agent who tries to flatter you with promises of an inflated price, or entices you with a commission rate so low (sometimes with hidden charges), that they cannot provide a decent level of service or train their staff effectively.

If you would like to move this year, the rule of thumb for this market is to choose a strong, independent, locally based agent, listen to their advice and quote a competitive asking price.

Whilst the market is in fact quite stable, buyers do have a choice. Buyers buy by comparison and

Please feel free to call us for a confidential, no obligation chat on 01778 349300.

So don’t fall into the trap of assuming that, because your property is slightly wider than the one on the market next door, or because it has better views or a bigger garden, you should quote a higher asking price. By doing so, your price offsets these benefits. Likewise, if your house is similar to next door, then you should undercut their price if you are to achieve an early sale.

With the wind behind you, you might just be in your new home by Christmas. And we would love to help you achieve this – it’s what we do!

GARDEN LIGHTING

A

s we head into October, the nights seem to be drawing in faster and faster, and you certainly wouldn’t be alone if you were considering putting lighting in your garden. I think it’s actually our most popular enquiry. Most people who I visit are not aware of just how many ways there are to control your lighting. Often, when I first visit, our clients have just realised that they want a light - perhaps a PIR (movement sensor) floor light, or sometimes a wall light that can be turned off in the house. What people are often delighted to hear is that PIR (which stands for ‘passive infra-red’) sensors can actually be fitted independently of any fitting; furthermore, they can actually control more than one light and, what’s even better, they can actually work with other sensors on the same circuit … all very clever! Another option, which is actually a favourite of mine, is a photocell (day/night sensor); this can be

put independently on any lighting circuit, so that all the lights that are controlled by it will come on when it gets dark, and then go off when it is light again. This can also work hand-in-hand with a timer if you didn’t want the light on all through the night. If having stand-alone accessories on your house just doesn’t appeal to you, the option we use in some of the heritage buildings we work on is a special type of timer. It is an intelligent timer that knows how long each day is, once you have set it to the right date. The added bonus of this is that you can set it to go off whenever you like. So you can set it in the following sequence :- Darkness: ON - 11pm: OFF 5am: ON - Daylight: OFF. And the best bit is that you can put it in a cupboard or loft and forget about it! Garden lighting is a real passion of mine, especially when I’m allowed to get really creative. If you would like to discuss your garden lighting ideas, please call 01778 772595 to book yourself in for a free consultation and I would be happy to discuss ideas with you.

Whether it’s ‘your bank’ asking for verification of personal details or a message to say you have won a competition prize – unwanted texts can be annoying and sometimes worrying. However, there is now a new service which allows you to report spam texts directly to your mobile phone provider. All operators now use 7726 as the 09:29 short code to report spam texts, and it is free to use. All of the UK’s mobile operators worked together to deploy a tool which collates all the information from the 7726 short code in real time. This means they can take early action to block numbers that are generating spam on their networks. They can also use this information to inform the regulators. You can report spam texts directly to your mobile phone provider free of charge by forwarding the text message to 7726. While scammers are getting more cunning at making a scam message look like the real thing, there are some signs you can watch out for. Here are some great tips from Which? Unexpected contact: Think about how that organisation normally contacts you and if it isn't via a message, contact them directly to check if it's legitimate. A genuine organisation will never contact you out of the blue and ask you to verify your details, request personal or banking details or tell you to transfer money via a message.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MIA! Five-year-old Mia is our Toy Bundle competition winner and is seen here enjoying her new favourite snack. Also pictured is Mia with her brother and sister, showing off the fantastic prizes! Her mum, Kelly Green, said: “Mia has sensory needs and development delay and up until lockdown she would only eat smooth foods like yogurts, custard and few other items but couldn’t eat sandwiches. “We also have a thirteen-year-old daughter who decided to encourage Mia, so they made a very special sandwich together and Mia ate it! We were amazed as we had tried similar before but had no luck. Mia’s favourite sandwich is ham sandwich with cheese and crisps. Great competition and prizes.” 14 26

D I S C O V E R I N G

Whittlesea Deepings

Check for spelling or grammar errors: Genuine organisations will rarely, if ever, make glaring spelling mistakes or grammatical errors, and if so, it will usually be an isolated incident. If the message doesn't look professional, it's probably a scam – even if it drops into a message chain from your bank. Don't follow any links: If you follow a link in the message, it could send you to an imposter website set up to steal your money or personal data. In some cases, it could even infect your smartphone with malware. Always look up an organisation's contact details independently and get in touch to verify the message. Don't share personal information: If you think you've been targeted by a scam message, don't share any personal information, your banking details or PIN. Legitimate organisations, such as banks or HMRC, will never ask for your personal or banking details through a message or text. OCTOBE OBERR 22002200 OCT

Deeping St Nicholas Primary School

We are pleased to be welcoming back all our students over these turbulent times. Due to the school being opened during lockdown, we were able to put routines in place with regard to regular hand washing, cleaning touch points etc, so we were ready to welcome all our pupils back into school in September. It was lovely to see the smiles and excitement on the children’s faces. The first few days were used to get all children into these new regular routines such as the one-way system and staggered start times, in order to keep classes separate. By introducing a soft approach into the classes, the children have been given an opportunity to share the concerns and things they did during lockdown. It’s important that time is given to allow children to discuss and express their feelings in these unprecedented times. Since the retirement of our previous Headteacher, Mr Emery has been our school’s Interim Head and has brought a wealth of experience to us. Due to

the overwhelming success of the partnership with a larger school, both Boards of Governors and Parents have completed a consultation with a view to federate. This has been successfully approved by all parties and we hope it will be in place from October 1st. We are looking forward to building on the relationships in place with William Stukeley CE school and the opportunities this will bring to both pupils and staff alike.

Deeping St James Community Primary School Can I start by saying that it is great to have all the children back into school. The staff and all the children are excited, and they have done brilliantly to adapt so quickly to all the changes that are in place due Covid-19. The classrooms are set out with all the children facing the front; we have split playtimes; split drop off and pick up times (from three different school entrances) and hand sanitizers have become the norm. Unfortunately, at present we are having to cancel or postpone events like Grandparents’ Afternoon and our Year 6 residential trip, but hopefully we will be able to reinstate these great events later on in the year. As always, if we can be of any assistance in the local community, please let me know. Take care and keep safe!

INTEREST RATES...

Not what they used to be

A

s I approach my thirtieth birthday this September, I have decided to reflect on the past thirty years, and I think it is fair to say the world is a very different place from what it was in 1990!

BY MATTHEW BIGGS – FINANCIAL PLANNER

‘balanced’ risk portfolio. The green line (B) is a fixed interest rate of 1.5% (the average of the past ten years) and the red line (C) is the Retail Performance Index (RPI), a measure of UK inflation:

The early ’90s was an incredible time for many reasons - some great music, the end of the Cold War, and the emergence of a new generation of tech companies that we all now wish we had purchased some shares in! Interest rates were on the up and, by the end of 1990, the Bank of England base interest rate was nearly 15% - completely unthinkable today! This was great for savers but clearly not so good for those who had a mortgage during those days and, as a borrower, things were pretty painful! In the current climate of low interest rates, we see the reverse of those days in the early ’90s cycle - great for borrowers but, for savers, almost impossible to find sensible levels of return at the bank or building society. So, where is the alternative in these days of fear and uncertainty? How are you going to generate sensible returns to see you through your retirement years, children’s schooling or that holiday of a lifetime?

By the start of July 2020, the blue line (A) in now valued at £18,566.02, the green line (B) is valued at £11,691.50 and the red line (C) is valued at £13,426.61. This shows that if you had chosen to save in a vehicle that offered a fixed interest rate of 1.5% over the past ten years, your money would have actually fallen in real term value of £1,784.66, whereas it would have gained £6,054.74 in real term value were it invested over the same ten year period (basically, if your money is below the red line (C) you’re losing money, not making money!). So, perhaps now is time to consider your own planning. With our help, you will be able to understand if making an investment is right for you.

One option you may wish to consider is to invest some of your capital. In the example below, you can see what would have happened if you had invested £10,000 between January 1st 2010 and July 1st 2020. The blue line (A) has been invested in the average

If you would like to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of investing your money over the medium to long term, then please contact our office to arrange a FREE initial consultation with one of our highly experienced and friendly financial planners.

Past performance can in no way be seen as a guide to likely future performance; investment values can fall as well as rise; when investing, capital will be placed at risk.

The block paving driveways provided by EcoDrives are becoming an increasingly popular choice, due to the versatile design opportunities. Block paving is available in a wide range of styles and patterns, meaning they can be used to create a truly unique design, fitting your individual needs and taste. This type of surface is very durable and can withstand heavy use and harsh weather conditions, while only requiring occasional cleaning to keep it looking its best. It prevents surface water build-up due to the porous nature of the materials used, allowing for a more eco-friendly block paving service.

Resin driveways are a long-lasting and easy-tomaintain option to transform the front of your home. An eco-friendly alternative, thanks to the non-toxic materials used, and available in a range of colours, a resin driveway is naturally draining, meaning no more puddles from heavy rainfall. They are highly resistant to rust, oil, corrosion, salt and cracking, and are also the safest option, being resistant to abrasion, slipping, indentation and ignition.

Save Your Theatre! Stamford Shakespeare Company (SSC), with its open-air theatre at Tolethorpe Hall, has launched a campaign to ensure its survival.

S

tamford Shakespeare Company (SSC), with its open-air theatre at Tolethorpe Hall, has launched a fundraising campaign to ensure its survival. Its aim is to raise crucial funds to keep the theatre company afloat and to ensure the summer season of plays can continue next year.

The impact of Covid-19 on SSC has been enormous. The Theatre and Hall were closed in March this year and the Company has lost a forecasted £240,000 worth of ticket sales. As a charity who receive no funding from any arts organisations or formal sponsorship, SSC relies on income from tickets sales to fund the productions, maintain the beautiful grounds and upkeep the Grade II* listed Elizabethan Hall. The future of SSC is now at great risk.

We have been putting on Shakespeare plays for over fifty years and we are determined that Covid-19 will not put an end to this, but without the help from the community, we will not survive. We are enormously grateful to our patrons and overwhelmed by their continued generosity and kindness. We now need you more than ever.” For more information, please visit their fundraising website: www.saveyourtheatre.co.uk.

Although the government lifted some of the restrictions on theatres, allowing outdoor venues to re-open with social distancing in place, SSC have not been able to rehearse, they have not finished the construction of their sets nor the costumes for the actors; therefore, 2020’s productions could not proceed. Caroline Stephenson, Chair of SSC Board of Directors, said: “We are all so lucky to have this theatre on our doorstep. To date, we have welcomed over a million audience members, to share experiences with friends and family through theatre, giving volunteers a place to be valued, and inspiring young people to dream big. Losing this wonderful, unique and special place would leave a void in our community.

4 In a large saucepan over a medium heat, bring the water and crumbled stock cubes to the boil. Cook the potato in simmering water until soft, for about twenty minutes. 5 Combine the potato and water with the roasted vegetables and puree in a liquidiser or food processor until smooth. Return to the pan over low heat and stir in the cream, nutmeg, pepper and salt. Heat gently, then serve with some crusty bread. Helpful tip: Sugar pumpkins are similar to the large orange pumpkins you find during Hallowe’en but they are smaller, sweeter and have more flavour – optimal for this or any other pumpkin recipe. If unavailable, you can substitute in butternut or kabocha squash.

Wildwood Ovens

Make the Most of the Great Outdoors!

W

ildwood Ovens, based near Stamford, is a wood-fired oven rental service. Founder, Chris Elson, created this fantastic business within just six weeks, after he, unfortunately, lost his day job, during the Covid-19 crisis. Having come from a background in fine-dining restaurants and, more recently, the wider food industry, Chris has always had a huge passion for outdoor cooking and entertaining family and friends. He has had a wood-fired oven for several years and has loved this natural and traditional method of cooking. Chris explains, “It is not only great fun and sociable, but the intense heat locks in nutrients and delivers great flavour and texture to a multitude of ingredients.” Wildwood’s flexible rental programme offers the opportunity to discover the benefits of a wood-fired oven in the convenience of your own home or holiday destination. They are currently offering two and five-night rentals and a free delivery within a twenty-five mile radius of Stamford. (A charge is made for further afield). Please get in touch today to explore the full range.

What’s Happening in October at Vine House Farm AUTUMN HIGHLIGHTS

The seasonal change is well underway & the time has come to once again enjoy the wonderful produce that autumn has to offer. Pumpkins & squashes are a particular highlight with their vibrant colours & interesting patterns. They are delicious roasted, made into soup or even spiralised as a gluten-free alternative to pasta. The spaghetti squash will even take the hard work of spiralising away, as once roasted it will simply turn into spaghetti like strands with the use of a fork.

ENJOY.... APPLES & PEARS

English apples & pears not only taste wonderful but buying British also supports our local growers. The season began with Discovery & we now have Gala, Russet & Cox, widely regarded as the finest of all eating apples. We grow our own Conference pears, which have a very sweet & juicy flesh, a real treat.

WORDS FROM THE

Mayor of Market Deeping

COUNCILLOR JOSHUA YARHAM

We find ourselves, yet again, restricted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

L

imits of groups of six, both indoors and outdoors, travel corridors being removed from the list because of potential spikes, and strict social-distancing and face coverings everywhere we go. The more this pandemic continues, the more I start to agree with Lord Sumption and the ways in which he has been critical of the approaches taken by this government!

In contrast to the bleak picture of restricted liberty, significant progress has been made at the Town Council. Dates have been finalised for works to start on the John Eve Field, the Sanctum Gardens, the BMX Track, and significant planning has been put forward to Council in relation to the renovations of the Town Hall. The Standing Orders and Policy changes made at the August Full Council Meeting facilitated decisions to be made more quickly and forward plans to be more definitive than in previous years. This is a good change and the practice will be continued, in order for the Town Council to get productive and substantive tasks completed. Events, as I am sure residents of Market Deeping are well aware, are few and far between. I did, however, manage to attend the reopening of The Deepings Youth Group and met volunteers and members of Deeping St. James Parish Council who help set up the excellent facilities for the 52

Deepings

young people in our community. Multiple sessions are on-going and young people are able to interact and relax with others, knowing there is an extensive and positive support group around them. The Town Council will continue to significantly assist The Deepings Youth Group financially. Sadly, the Deputy Clerk has handed in her resignation. Her work was appreciated by all who relied on her knowledge and professionalism to get an answer to their question. Claire worked tirelessly for the benefit of the Town Council and was an asset who will be missed. We all wish her a happy and successful future in any endeavour she wishes to undertake. I wish all residents of Market Deeping good health, and hope that we are all able to live more freely in the near future. OCT OBE R 2 0 2 0

Pets and Vets

Food Allergies and Trials

O

ctober … and Hallowe’en around the corner. Pumpkins (and other squashes) are not just for carving though; they can be useful in the veterinary world. It is possible that some of the ones grown round here will end up in pet food, but why? Dogs and cats are not renowned for eating them.

Skin allergies are extremely common in pets and can be due to a variety of causes. Insect bites, mainly from fleas, are our most common allergy, whilst seasonal allergies from tree and grass pollen can be rife at times. Food allergies are thought to be more common than realised but testing for them is hard. It requires a lot of discipline not just by owners, but everyone involved in the care of your pet. Animals eat a variety of commercial foods that contain proteins and flavourings that the body may come to recognise as foreign and which the immune system attacks. The resulting inflammation can occur in the digestive tract, but more commonly affects the skin. Animals itch around the face, especially the ears, but also the feet and over the rump. In fact, inflammation and damage of the ear canals is most commonly due to allergies and may be the only symptom of allergy in your pet. Most owners think

54

Wise Words By Deirdre Wilson

that it is a new food that causes allergies. However, your pet may have been on the same diet for a long time with no trouble at all. It takes time for allergies to develop then, all of a sudden, the immune system rejects the food and an allergy develops. So how do we know if your pet is allergic to a particular foodstuff? There are no reliable blood or skin tests; instead, we do a food trial that is quite demanding for pets and owners to follow. Prescription diets are best used for food allergy testing. They contain novel proteins such as venison, or hydrolysed proteins where the allergens have been stripped off. The carbohydrate sources are also unique, for instance our lovely pumpkins or sweet potato. This food is the only thing that should pass your pet’s lips – no treats, no milk, no chews, no leftovers. They need to be on this diet for eight to twelve weeks for it to be effective. All family members need to be onboard with this or it will fail, and all the effort wasted. Once symptoms resolve, your pet is gradually introduced to its original food sources to see if the itch starts up again and, if it does, the answer is obvious – your pet has a food allergy. So, pumpkins are not only great for carving, they’re great for pets as well!

Glinton Horticultural Society News Update

A

t the time of writing, we should be well into preparations for the 77th Glinton Horticultural Society Annual Show. However, Covid-19 has scuppered many events this year and we are no exception. Set up in 1943 in conjunction with a fete and gala, the Glinton Horticultural Society held its first shows in a marquee on the village playing field in Glinton. The show then moved to Peakirk-cumGlinton school until the Arthur Mellows Village College opened in 1948, where it has been held ever since. This local gardening and hobbies show is one of the largest shows in East Anglia. In normal times, the College and the judges would have been booked, the rosettes and medals ordered, and trophies cleaned, ready for the big day. Friday afternoon is set-up time, then Saturday sees the entries coming in. It is fascinating to watch the dahlia, chrysanthemum and begonia growers, in particular, prepare their blooms for display. Most of their flowers are transported in individually-spaced crates and each bloom is tended with minute detail, with errant petals being teased into place. The end results are magnificent. When the show opens at in the afternoon, everyone can feast their eyes on the wonderful flowers, vegetables and the creative talents of local people in the handicrafts classes – not to mention the inventiveness in the children’s classes. The baking and preserves look very tempting – but not good for the waistline in excess! I try to convince myself that one cake

OC TOB E R 2020

won’t hurt! The well-supported photography classes give many interpretations on various themes. At the end of the afternoon, the trophies and certificates are presented to proud winners. We are looking forward to being back next year – please keep your 2020 schedules, as the classes will remain the same. Also a victim of the Covid-19 pandemic is our programme of evening talks which should have started this October. Due to social distancing and the risk of spikes in the number of cases expected over the winter months, we have taken the difficult decision to cancel. This will be reviewed next year. In the meantime, there is fruit to pick, jam, chutneys and pickles to make, to keep our taste-buds interested during the winter. The garden is a neverending joy … or trial when things don’t go according to plan! Many people are now growing their own vegetables – there is nothing better than food picked fresh and cooked fresh. Keep gardening and stay safe!

A unique performance of her one-woman show, filmed in the theatre at Stamford Arts Centre and presented especially for an online audience on National Poetry Day. Georgie Jones, (27) from Bourne, has finally cracked what it means to be a woman. Just kidding. She’s haphazardly stumbling through adulthood trying to figure it out. Laced with warmth and hilarity, “ISH” is part party, part epic poem. Spoken word, stand up and storytelling are set to a soundtrack of nostalgic ’90s bangers in celebration of the simultaneously grotesque and glorious experience that is womanhood. Oct 7th at 6pm and 11th at 12 midnight: “In Loco Parentis” – Vincent Dance Company: Stamford Arts Centre Website. Critically acclaimed performance where three adult and 62

The work exposes the emotional impact that foster care and adoption has on young people’s lives. Suitable for ages 14+. If you are affected by the themes, need support or know someone who may need support, the Arts Centre website has information on helplines that may be of use. Oct. 16th: “Jazz in the Yard”: 8pm.
