Introduction

Welcome to Your January Issue.

At the time of writing, we’re still very much wrapped up in 2019 and the final throes of the year, with its Christmas parties, Santa appearing here and there, the carols and all the end-of term concerts, all of which make it such a fabulous time of year.

The last few weeks have been particularly special for me.

Our beautiful (canine!) baby George was one year old on November 27th, whilst two days later, our youngest “beautiful baby”, Ed, turned eighteen. Watch out world !!!

As we start a new decade with this month, I hope our readers love our new front cover, along with a new “kids page”, and we all look forward to even more exciting articles in 2020. In the meantime, I wish you a Happy New Year and may it bring peace, happiness and good health to everyone.

Welcome to the new decade, the 2020s!

So, the votes have been cast in the General Election and, as I gaze at the map showing the new political alignment of all the constituencies, an Elton John lyric can be faintly heard, “And I guess that’s why they call it the blues!”

Oops, there goes my new year’s resolution – don’t get political!

A new year brings new beginnings, so our front cover is sporting a fresh new look and the first Children’s Page will hopefully entertain and amuse.

However, I can see there’s going to be serious competition over our monthly dose of alleged humour. Here’s my couple to set the dubious tone for 2020: •.....................My friend had his I.D. stolen recently. He’s always losing things is poor old Dav. •.....................How long would it take to buy a dog in Mexico? Chihuahuas!

hilst the festivities of Christmas are a time to eat drink and be merry, the New Year often finds us feeling lethargic with bulging waistbands!

Being on a diet often just signals the fact that you will need to deal with hunger and cravings on a daily basis, and this is often confused with you needing more willpower. But should being slim really be that painful?

Hunger is a sensation felt in the gut. It is a gnawing empty feeling. Cravings are felt in the head. A craving is more subconscious and under the radar. Have you ever eaten your fill of vegetables and protein and said

What’s the Resolution? What Will You Change?

The end of one year and the beginning of another is a really good time to change something or, even better, work on yourself. When was the last time you did that?

The clients that come and see me are open to trying new things but some struggle with the stigma attached to “visiting a therapist”. It always makes me wonder why we have this stigma and where did it come from? In America everyone has a therapist and talk about the fact that they do.

I first encountered this therapy after having my son and really needed some help with my anxiety that had reared its ugly head through long, sleepless nights and sheer fear of him screaming wherever I went. It also helped me to leave the house after six weeks, with him in the car with me.

Having this therapy then enabled me to have the perfect home birth anyone could ever ask for. I

attended a six-week hypnotherapy course and birthed at home, with my husband stepping in as the midwife as the local community midwife was unavailable. I think he needed therapy after that shock…

Why Exercise? Here’s Why! Last month, my fifteen-month-old son was a little poorly with a hacking cough and cold.

Because of this, me and my partner Tasha spent hours across many days sitting in the waiting room at the doctor’s surgery waiting for same day emergency appointments to make sure, as first-time parents, that he was ok. By the way, he is ok and bouncing around like a little red-haired metronome as we speak.

It was December, and I presume, from what I saw that this is a ‘boom’ month at any doctor’s surgery. It was packed, with a cross section of local society. People with ailment, illness and injury of varying severity and seriousness. But everyone, me included, was afflicted by a dose of the same feeling… apprehension.

Apprehension of what? Well, it’s the fear or disconcerting ‘disquiet’ in the soul that comes when you realise that when all is well, you don’t think so much about your health, but as soon as the perimeter fence of security that is so often taken for granted is breached, you are hit with a brick of perspective. Health governs all things. Health is a gift. Health is a blessing. Health is the most precious thing we have, and it must be nurtured, respected and appreciated and, wherever possible, promoted and maintained by our actions and behaviours.

I am not so arrogant or naïve to think that we can all be totally in control of our health. Nor would I ever lay ‘blame’ at the door of anyone who could have lived a ‘healthier’ lifestyle if they are unfortunate enough to fall ill. I wish all people could live the life they want and live long healthy, stress-free lives. And I also offer empathy and affection to anyone who has or is suffering from serious ill health.

But, by definition, my focus, as the person running your local gym, is the potential positive effect of exercise.

Take this direct excerpt from the NHS website as a starting point for context: “Given the overwhelming evidence, it seems obvious that we should all be physically active. It’s essential if you want

What would you do to get access to it? How often would you take it? Where would it be in your list of new year priorities?

There are undeniable opportunities to get out and do some exercise. Furthermore, the ‘exercise pill’ will bring social inclusion, self-esteem, improved mood, new friendships and improved knowledge around your personal fitness, exercise and eating habits.

So, in short, while we are amidst the hype of ‘New Year’s Resolutions’, it makes sense to make health your 2020 priority. Resolutions and the idea of short-term goals that are forgotten before the end of January bore me as much as they bore you. But, trust me, the decision to ‘do’ is more powerful than many realise, and why not use the wave

and a heavy smoker at that. I quit and my motivation was that me and my family were to open a gym! The happy consequence of that is that I feel like my forties are going to be about progress; fitness; being a parent; being in love with my family; and showing people just how young a forty-something is in the modern world. And this applies to people at any stage of life, at any age. A year is a long time and to change your lifestyle for a year is potentially to change your life forever. For the better. I know. I’ve done it.

Do some reading on the internet about forming habits, and exercise. Read about ‘Habits, Cues and Rewards’ and how you can begin to make your trips to the gym almost a craving in themselves in the coming year. Very simply put, for example, make your ‘cue’ to exercise the time of day initially… so, before work, or straight after work. Then find a reward to associate with it. The reward could be your food after your training session, or a glass of wine in the evening but, over time, you will actually feel the reward in the way you feel every time you exercise. The endorphin release, or indeed the way your clothes fit.

Please remember this;

This year I turn forty years old. And I can’t wait. I feel young and energised and optimistic about life. I am aware that I have the privilege of health and that could change at any time. But I am also aware of the decisions I have made in my life up to now, to give myself the best chance of enjoying it. For example, seven years ago I was a smoker,

Change is part of life. Embrace it. Own it.

- Success Stories from Successful Slimmers Cheryl Hall is a Slimming World Consultant, based in Deeping St. James. She has been responsible for turning around the lives of many people with her fabulous support and encouragement, and here we can see the effects she has had on three local ladies, who are happy to share their success stories.

I can say that for me, a variety of food optimising at meal and snack times, and daily thirty-minute brisk walks was key to keeping me engaged and on track to losing the weight.

Losing so much weight has meant that I have dropped down from a size sixteen to a twelve, I feel more energetic and much more confident. My appetite has changed a lot and now I have no problem in saying “No” and staying away from cakes, biscuits and buffets!”

Club Records and Medals Galore for Deepings at Boston Meet Five club records fell as Deepings Swimming Club won a remarkable ninety-seven medals at the Boston Open Meet recently. The competition, held at the Meres Leisure Centre in Grantham, was the last opportunity for swimmers to achieve qualifying times for next year’s Lincolnshire County Championships. In total, the team won twenty-nine gold, twenty-eight silver and forty bronze medals, across all age groups.

Lorna McGill was in sensational form, breaking all three Deepings breaststroke club records for 16 yrs girls as she dominated the discipline, with wins in the 50m, 100m and 200m events.

Beth Eagle-Brown set a new club record in the 200m freestyle and also claimed a hat-trick of butterfly golds in the 15/O age group. She also won the 100IM, as well as taking silver in the 100m backstroke and two bronze in the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke.

Completing the record-breaking weekend was 12-year-old Lilly Tappern, who set a new 100m butterfly time. It was one of two golds for Lilly, after victory in the 200m butterfly, with a pair of freestyle silvers (100m and 200m) and bronze in the 200IM and 100m breaststroke.

Holly Roffe claimed the biggest haul of gold medals at the meet after swimming personal bests across three disciplines, plus an individual medley. She doubled up in the 50m and 100m butterfly and repeated the feat in the 50m and 100m freestyle, adding gold in the 100m breaststroke and 100IM to

finish with six.

Deepings’ youngest gold medallist of the weekend was Maya Sangiorgio in the 400m freestyle and the 200m butterfly. The girls’ squad took another six golds. Backstroke sprinter Holly Leggott won the 50m and 100m races in the 15/O age group, adding her third gold in the 50m freestyle. Grace Edwards took a pair of golds in the 11yrs 200IM and 50m backstroke, and Jessica O’Herlihy won the 13yrs 400m freestyle.

Deepings had a smaller squad of boys at the open meet, but they added a collection of their own medals, led by Jake Jungmann with a trio of golds in the 15/O 100m and 200m backstroke, and 100m freestyle. Several big personal bests swept 14-yearold Christian Rollinson to first place in the 50m and 100m butterfly.

Lynn Chapman, Deepings Head Coach, was thrilled by the speed her swimmers showed over the two days. “It was a meet for strong competition, good skills and hard swimming, rather than personal bests, but we had some exceptional swims,” she said. “I’m

Choir Raises Both Voices and Funds for Parkinson’s Peterborough Take Note Community Choir held their ‘Nearly Christmas Concert’ on November 30th, which turned out to be a fantastic evening, enjoyed by everyone who attended. All profits for the evening were donated to the Peterborough branch of the Parkinson’s Society - a brilliant total of just over £1,600 was raised. The choir would like to thank all those who helped to raise this money which will be spent within the local branch.

Christmas Afternoon Tea for Local Senior Citizens Early December saw the Deepings School welcome forty-five local senior citizens to a lovely Christmas afternoon tea, provided by the school’s excellent catering team. Guests were greeted and served by some of their superb Year 9 and Sixth Form students who helped out during the afternoon, taking orders for tea and coffee and managing the raffle.

The talented food tech team and their students also created a selection of colourful miniature Christmas cakes to give away in the free raffle, and the afternoon finished with the traditional game of Bingo, professionally ‘called’ by Sixth Form student, Ben Pateman.

and to welcome some new senior citizens to our school to enjoy the start of our Christmas festivities. The event also provided an opportunity for Headteacher, Richard Lord, to chat with the local residents and for us to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and New Year.

Method

JANUARY Gardening Tips Now that the rush of Christmas is over, and you have had your fill of the home-grown sprouts, it is time to take stock of last year’s triumphs and failures. You could now spend time planning a crop rotation to get the best out of your plot. You could work on a three or five-year crop rotation which prevents the soil from becoming exhausted from growing the same crop continually, taking the same nutrients out of the soil. It also reduces the risk of pests and diseases becoming established and then finding them very difficult to eradicate.

The three-year crop rotation involves the following: Year 1: Peas, beans and fruiting vegetables: peas and beans absorb nitrogen from the air and store it in the roots –leaving the roots in after harvesting benefits next year’s crop.

Year 2: Brassicas – are nitrogen-hungry, grow them where last year’s peas and beans grew. They are also susceptible to club root (a soilborne fungus) so moving them around helps keep this at bay.

Year 3: Roots, tubers, onions and leaves: these crops do not have a particular “thirst” for nitrogen, so it is good to grow them after brassicas where the nitrogen content has been depleted.

And, if you have a very large plot, why not try a five-year rotation?

Year 1: Brassicas.

Year 2: Peas and beans.

Year 3: Potatoes and fruiting vegetables.

Year 4: The onion family.

Year 5: Root and stem vegetables.

There are still one or two jobs that you can be doing to maintain the plot and make the best of your remaining crops: • Start a bean trench by digging down about 60cm and then start filling it with your organic kitchen waste. Each time you add a batch of waste, cover with a layer of soil: continue until the trench is full and leave it to rot down.

• Draw the soil up around the stalks of cabbages and winter cauliflowers to just under the first set of leaves. Check over Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli and support them with a strong stake to prevent them from being blown over in high winds.

• At this time of year, rhubarb can be forced, using pots or an upturned bucket, or even a pile of straw, making sure any holes are covered to completely cut out the light. What could be tastier than pale pink sticks of rhubarb harvested in late February?

• It’s a good time of year for a spot of cleaning: seed trays and plant pots can be cleaned with a mild bleach solution to kill diseases that may have carried over to the new seedlings.

• Finally, at the end of the month seed potatoes should be available and you can start chitting them in seed trays ready for planting.

Do I have to use the Property Lawyer my Estate Agent is Recommending?

This is something I hear on a daily basis; the quick answer is “NO”.

When your estate agent recommends a conveyancing solicitor or a licensed conveyancer/ property lawyer, it is likely the firm they are recommending are paying them a ‘referral fee’.

This fee is usually passed on to you, the client.

You may be surprised to learn that some ‘referral fees’ are in the £100s, simply for your conveyancing business. This is why conveyancing fees vary so widely.

Read the small print before you sign any agreements!

Every law firm should detail how much they receive from the estate agent for passing business to them. The Solicitors Regulation Authority and The Council for Licensed Conveyancers, which regulates conveyancing solicitors and licensed conveyancers, has a strict referral code.

Solicitors/licensed conveyancers are required to set out a full quotation which details their fees, the disbursement costs and associated expenses with your transaction. They are also required to reveal how much they paid for your referral. Look at this closely! I suggest you ask the solicitor/licensed conveyancer/property lawyer for details of the referral fee they have paid for your (potential) custom. In addition to checking the amount of money you, the client, are paying for your referred business, I strongly recommend that you get at least three quotes for your conveyancing. Fees for 44 30

leasehold and freeholds within different valuation brackets can vary widely. I also suggest that you search for reviews of the firms you are interested in working with.

In summary, when buying or selling a property it is vital that you appoint a lawyer that you can trust to act in your best interests, who will have the experience to complete the transaction properly and in timely manner and who will charge you a fair price for doing so.

Everyone has the right to choose their own lawyer.

Both the Solicitor’s Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC) rigorously state that its members are meant to ensure that their client has chosen them to act without pressure being exerted upon them to do so.

If you are being pressurised into choosing a lawyer as outlined above refuse firmly and advise that you will seek the advice of the SRA or CLC – this usually does the trick!

Will 2020 be Your Year?

Every year about this time, I sit down to write the article for this magazine’s January issue. If I am honest, it is the easiest one that I ever write.

Why? – It is simple, because all I have to do is encourage you to do what you should have done last year – get your will up-to-date and put some Lasting Powers of Attorney in place.

This year, more than ever, I feel passionate about the need for everyone to do this, because you simply don’t know what is around the corner. As I wrote this article last year, I was in good health, my parents were happy and settled, and we were looking forward to having my father-in law around for Christmas lunch. Little did we know that, just twelve months later, our lives would have been turned upside down!

I got diagnosed with a heart issue in January, which messed up the first part of the year, and it made me reassess my own planning. But, thanks to the good folks at the new Papworth Royal Hospital, I was fixed by June.

I was just in time to help my father-in-law move into his new care home; he could no longer cope at home on his own and needed more help than the three visits a day he

was getting from his carers. This was the first time I really saw the power of having the right documents in place. My wife acted for him under his Lasting Power of Attorney and everything worked smoothly. He is very happy and loves the staff at Braeburn Lodge in Deeping St. James.

September saw a more dramatic demonstration of the power of having a Lasting Power of Attorney. My dad had a severe deterioration in his health. He was in hospital for a few weeks and the adult social care team wanted to discharge him to a care facility in either Bourne or Grantham. Neither of these options would have suited my family but, because we had the right documentation in place, we were able to tell the local authority what we wanted and, with a bit of negotiation, we got my dad into Braeburn too. It has been quite a year!

So, my message to you as you make your new year’s resolutions is … Make 2020 the year you put your planning in place. If you are lucky and your parents are still around, you might want to just check that they have theirs in place as well.

A New Year and New Warning About Selfassessment Scams

by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades WITH the New Year comes a clean slate, business goals, resolutions and, of course, filling in those self-assessment forms. The January 31st deadline is approaching fast, and in the run up, HM Revenue and Customs is warning millions of self-assessment customers to be aware of fraudsters.

Worryingly, over the last year, HMRC received nearly 900,000 reports from the public about suspicious HMRC contact, either through phone calls, texts or e-mails. More than 100,000 of these were phone scams, while over 620,000 reports from the public were about bogus tax rebates.

Fraudsters use a range of techniques to scam cash from hard-working individuals, with some of the most common including phoning taxpayers offering a fake tax refund, or pretending to be HMRC by texting or e-mailing a link which will take customers to a false page, where their bank details and money will be stolen. Fraudsters are also known to threaten victims with arrest or imprisonment if a bogus tax bill is not paid immediately.

However, help is at hand. HMRC operates a dedicated Customer Protection team to identify and close down scams but is advising customers to recognise the signs to avoid becoming victims themselves. It is worth remembering that genuine organisations like HMRC and banks will never contact customers asking for their PIN, password or bank details. Customers should NEVER give out private information, reply to text messages, download attachments or click on links in texts or e-mails which they are not expecting.

Customers are urged to take action by forwarding details of suspicious calls or e-mails claiming to be from HMRC to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk and texts to 60599. Customers who have suffered financial loss should contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or use their online fraud reporting tool.

Tax is automatically deducted from most UK taxpayers’ wages, pensions or savings. Where tax is not automatically deducted, or when people or businesses have earned additional untaxed income, they are required to complete a Self-Assessment tax return each year.

People need to complete a tax return if they: • Earned more than £2,500 from renting out property.

• Their partner received Child Benefit and either of them had an annual income of more than £50,000.

• Received more than £2,500 in other untaxed income, for example from tips or commission.

• Are self-employed sole traders.

• Are employees claiming expenses in excess of £2,500.

• Have an annual income over £100,000.

• Earned income from abroad on which they need to pay tax.

In 1898, Mr A. E. Bowman opened a barber’s shop at 7 Market Place, Market Deeping which he successfully ran for many years, until his fourteenyear-old son, Eric, took over the business where he remained until his retirement in 1959.

The shop was put up for sale and, after seeing the advert in the Peterborough Evening Telegraph (in which his fish and chips were wrapped!) Mr John Callow duly bought it. After some refurbishment, he opened Callow’s Barber’s Shop on Saturday November 28th, 1959.

The Cigar Box also boasts a wonderfully diverse range of speciality spirits, those not found elsewhere on the High Street, and Howard has introduced sampling evenings for his customers to try his range of both drinks and cigars.

“I can provide a very congenial atmosphere for my customers and many are returning, time and time again, for what has been called the gentleman’s equivalent of Afternoon Tea!” Howard explained.

Known by everyone as Dick, he then ran the barber’s shop for a staggering fifty-eight years until he decided to retire on his eighty-seventh birthday, finishing on Saturday November 11th, 2017. Sadly, Dick passed away from Motor Neurone Disease on September 26th, 2018. However, the family name of Callow’s continues and the barber’s shop has since been run by Penny Avison, still under the Callow name.

The biggest change is that the traditional sweetshop and tobacconist, run for thirty-seven years since 1981 by Dick’s son, Howard, was transformed in February of this year into a unique cigar and spirit emporium called The Cigar Box. With a full range of

School News Langtoft Primary School Receives Prestigious Unicef UK Gold Award Langtoft Primary School has been awarded Gold by Unicef UK’s ‘Rights Respecting Schools’ programme.

Unicef is the world’s leading organisation working for children and their rights. The ‘Rights Respecting Schools Award’ is granted to schools that show commitment to promoting and realising children’s rights and encouraging adults, children and young people to respect the rights of others in school.

Gold is the highest accolade given by Unicef UK and shows a deep and thorough commitment to children’s rights at all levels of school life. There are over four hundred schools across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales that have received Gold … but only seven in Lincolnshire.

Headteacher of Langtoft Primary School, Mr James McCullough, said, “Our school is tremendously proud to receive the Gold Award from Unicef UK. From the moment we began our journey to becoming a Gold Level school, the children have been interested to discover what their rights are and, most significantly, what they can practically do to help other children across the world who do not have access to their rights. He became one of the few men to compete at Grand Prix level in both motorcycle and car racing. Doors at the Corn Exchange open at 7.00 pm and the film show commences at 8.00 pm.

Citizens Advice Help Tenants Decide How to Raise Damp Problems with Landlords.

Citizens Advice say resolving damp issues can be difficult, especially as the cause of the problem is not always obvious. Also, by raising any disrepair complaint to a private landlord, it is important to realise that there is a risk of retaliatory eviction.

The advice is, first, to make sure the tenant is not doing anything that could be contributing to the damp, such as drying clothes indoors or blocking vents. Once that’s done, there are two potential routes available.

• One route is to report the problem to the Environmental Health Department at the local authority. This route is best if the tenant is unsure what is causing the damp, but it is also an option if they think the landlord is responsible. Telling the council, (and providing any evidence, photos of the damp, and a copy of the tenancy agreement), is the start. The local authority can issue an awareness notice, which tells the landlord there’s a hazard in the home and what they need to do to fix it, although it does not require the landlord to take action. The authority can also serve the more serious improvement notice, which requires the landlord to carry out the work, and also offers some protection from retaliatory eviction.

Finding a lump on your pet can be worrying for owners, and lumps can appear anywhere on a dog or cat’s body. Could the lump be a cancer, a piece of fatty tissue, a developing abscess or a cyst? Most lumps are found on the head and chin because that is where we handle our pets most. Lumps appear in other areas just as frequently and can often grow quite large before being discovered, especially those on the underside of the body.

History

Glimpses of Glinton and Peakirk

T

o some, they are just villages to the north of Peterborough, but there has been habitation there since at least the Iron Age, and they were significant settlements in Roman times. They are positioned along what was thought to be the route of the Roman Car Dyke. The remains of a Roman well were discovered at Glinton some time ago, and it was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086.

The origin of the name, Glinton is very vague, with various explanations, from Low German to Old English. However the name was arrived at, it now boasts a population of around 3,000, with around 1,200 dwellings, with some examples from the seventeenth century very much still in use as family homes. One of the houses near The Green was used as a garrison building during the Napoleonic wars of 1803 to 1815.

The most significant building is the magnificent St. Benedict’s Church, with its 140-foot high, ‘needle’ spire. It dates from the twelfth century, although the base of the font is about the only thing that survives from that time. Like most churches, it underwent enlargement over time, with additions being made through to the fifteenth century when the spire was built - considered almost as spectacular as that of Salisbury Cathedral. The nearby Blue Bell inn dates from the eighteenth century.

Today it is a thriving community with a horticultural society that holds a popular open competition every September, a Friendship Club, a branch of the Women’s Institute, an Art Club and indoor bowls, as well as other community groups.

Peakirk is a much smaller community. At one time, being close to the once-navigable Maxey Cut and Welland Navigation, (the River Welland having undergone various canalisation over time), it was an important trading post. Agricultural produce and wildfowl would have been shipped out and building materials amongst the freight that was unloaded. It also had the benefit of a railway station from 1849 to 1964.

The name is thought to be derived from ‘Pega’s church’. Pega was from a noble family and was the sister of St. Guthlac of Crowland. She is reputed to have established a hermitage and church there, and the eleventh century St. Pega’s Church is dedicated to her. It has been enlarged over succeeding centuries, but retains some ancient wall paintings. A large area of wetland was established by Peter Scott’s Wildfowl Trust as a nature reserve in 1957, which unfortunately had to be closed in 2001, with the birds being relocated. Much work has been done by the Peakirk Archaeological Survey Team to establish the exact route of Car Dyke, (much having been filled in), and its purpose.
