Introduction

Welcome to Your March Issue. Welcome to our March edition and a subtle reminder that it’s that time of year again when you can shower us mums with all those lovely words, cuddles and flowers! (Sunday March 31st, as if you’d need any reminding!) The new addition to our family, George the adorable cockapoo, has already showered me with Valentine’s Day goodies, so I might be in luck again. One very clever dog! Spring arrives this month of course - a time for freshening things up and putting new things in place for the longer and warmer days to come. Enjoy them, and thanks for the lovely feedback coming our way from you, the readers. Continuing, big thanks to all of our contributors and advertisers as well. Don’t forget…. clocks “spring forward” one hour on Mother’s Day. Soon be summer!!!

Claire x

Another month, another issue, bulging with information, features and advice. Read about health issues, money-related and legal matters, gardening tips, computer advice, St Lucia for the sunshine, veterinary advice, our comprehensive events and gigs guide for the month and a very special Mother’s Day quiz, focusing on that very special lady. Talking of which, there’s even an opportunity to win our competition with its Mother’s Day theme. Variety is indeed the key! Just a thought … by the time a woman eventually realizes that her mother was always right, she has a daughter of her own who thinks that she’s always wrong! And finally … I’ve just developed ‘sausage-phobia’ – I fear the wurst. She said, “Nothing rhymes with orange”. I said, “No it doesn’t!” Enjoy the read!

Stamford’s Celebrity Designer Wants You to Steal the Show! Anna-Maria D’Amato, the owner of ‘Anna Couture Boutique’ in Stamford, took the ambitious step late last year of opening ‘Anna Couture Brides’, a delightful property opposite The George Hotel on High Street, St. Martins. Barely two years since its arrival on Cheyne Lane, ‘Anna Couture Boutique’ had already become so popular, offering the latest stylish and glamorous ladies wear for all special occasions. Now the time was right to expand the business and the new premises have become a beautiful design house, where Anna-Maria and her team of highly-skilled seamstresses now have room to work their magic. A costume design graduate with a particularly enviable C.V, Anna-Maria has years of experience in costume design for both television and film, with anecdotes galore! For instance, she was Madonna’s seamstress for a year during her 2006 “Confessions” tour. Anna-Maria explains,“During my time making Madonna’s corsets, I had to sew up a fishnet stocking of hers while she was still wearing it, which was terrifying, (my needle was millimetres from her leg!)” She has produced costumes for blockbuster productions, including “Star Wars” and “The Phantom of the Opera”, and has worked with Gok Wan. Before taking on the new premises, a number of wedding dresses would have been sold, including some from Chanticleer, a top British bridalwear designer and manufacturer. The

6

opportunity to buy the Chanticleer label proved irresistible for Anna-Maria and that prompted the expansion on to the High Street (literally). Now, Anna-Maria and her team are in the process of producing their first Chanticleer capsule collection, which promises to be stunning and with trademark theatrical touches to express individuality. Anna-Maria had previously run her own bridal studios in North London and Gerrards Cross for many years, so her experience is vast. Furthermore, she has the trained expert’s eye to understand a bride’s vision for her wedding dress and then the skill to produce a breathtaking end-product. The Anna Couture Brides premises contains work rooms and stocks of beautiful fabric, whilst Anna-Maria and her team are adept at ensuring that the bride-to-be will enjoy her memorable couture experience, as her dress design takes shape before her very eyes, or a gown is altered to fit perfectly. There can be little doubt that you’ll walk away feeling that your particular needs and wants for that special dress will be satisfied and that your wedding dress will have you feeling like the star of the show!

Healthy Habits to Improve your Looks - Part 1 by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness

K

eeping motivation on a healthy eating routine or diet is not easy. Whilst you may have vowed that you were going to relinquish comfort foods and take up exercise more regularly, the reality of maintaining motivation in the longer term can be a challenge for the best of us. This month and next, Claire Saunders from Renu, will be sharing her top Healthy Habits to keep you on track, and make 2019 the year to love the way you look! Start as you mean to go on Your first meal of the day needs to be lean protein and good fats. Ditch the carb- loaded cereals and breads and go for eggs, smoked salmon, avocado or make a

Spanish omelette from last night’s left-over greens that you can cut into slices to eat on the run. Eat the first meal of the day whenever you like - you don’t have to eat the minute you get up. Focus on the food quality. Plan for success Plan your meals ahead. It’s cool these days to take your food with you in your Tupperware box. Take a few minutes each evening to prepare your food for the next day, or better still, batch cook at the weekend, so that you can stay on track all week. Buying snacks and lunches out is an expensive and fattening habit. This time of year, slow cookers are great and mean you can eat something

substantial before you reach for those fattening snacks. Try using frozen vegetables to save time and money; they are also great for making quick and nutritious soups. Create a weekly meal plan and a fat-loss-friendly shopping list to do your grocery shop on-line. This will save you time and money, as you won’t be tempted to impulse buy and it will keep you right on track with your goals.

Renu are looking for full time or part time Beauty Therapist. To apply for this position please email claire.saunders@renu.uk.com.

Exercise For That “Feel Good” Feeling! by Nicole Woodcock, Hummingbird Hypnotherapy

Have you ever thought about just waking up one day and getting fit … moving more, whether it’s walking or running or hitting the gym? You go to bed with every intention of setting your alarm early to do that workout DVD or hitting the gym before work. Let’s fast-forward to 6am and the realisation it’s time to get up and you promised yourself today was your day. Then the inevitable happens … you hit the ‘snooze’! Amazing how, even half-asleep, we know where that button is. Lying back down with thoughts of just ten more minutes, it’s raining outside, it’s too dark, I can go tomorrow.

huge effect on my mood and I felt very low. I decided to seek help with my own mindset from a colleague of mine, and the first decision I made was to exercise again. When we move, if only for ten minutes, we boost so many positive chemicals in our body that we start to change how we feel in a very short space of time, releasing serotonin, adrenalin and dopamine, to name but a few. These chemicals enable us to use the intellectual part of the brain, the bit we all need to feel good about ourselves.

I find it really fascinating how our mindset makes us work. We can go from having every intention to achieve that goal, but yet at the same time find every excuse as to why we didn’t achieve it.

Do you need a boost? Get back on the pathway to your fitness goal, or just begin to feel better about yourself in general?

After recently coming out of a low period, I have realised the importance that moving and exercises have on my mental health. I had started making excuses to not go running and find just half an hour for myself. This had a

Could some counselling help you?

by Alex Baldock: BA(Hons), Diploma in Person Centred Counselling, mbacp

R

ecently I was asked to give a talk on why counselling should replace mental health services. I initially accepted this invitation, and then when I got to thinking about what I was going to say, I started to think that the question was all wrong. Counselling shouldn’t replace mental health services, because it is part of mental health services.

However, when we hear the phrase ‘mental health’, what do we think? Schizophrenia, psychosis, bipolar, phobias, PTSD. Top-end issues, each with their own carefully attached label. Or the ‘crazy’ person we see, wide-eyed weaving the streets who we think should be ‘locked up’. Or those with severe learning disabilities. Issues that are not ordinarily associated with counselling. And yet mental health covers everything from management of daily life to psychopathy. Counselling definitely fits in along that spectrum. Over the last couple of years, the government has made promises about providing additional funding for mental health services, creating thousands of new jobs in the sector, including having a counsellor in every school. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry have fronted a mental health campaign. Sports stars, pop stars, stars of stage and screen, have all signed up to be involved, to encourage greater awareness of our mental health. And they are not just talking about the issues listed above. They are encouraging us to engage with our day-to-day thoughts, feelings and emotions. That having a down day might be just that; we all have them and it’s okay to acknowledge it to someone. Or it might be because yesterday wasn’t great or something happened; that happens too, and it’s okay to acknowledge it to someone. Or it might be because we haven’t really talked about anything for years and we have ended up not being able to manage the everyday issues that are not usually a problem; the little things have become too much. Talking about it is a positive thing to do, man or woman. You might not have listened when your nan told you that “a problem shared was a problem halved”, but she was right. Getting it out of your head, being heard, being listened to; that’s what counselling does. It’s not about being given a solution. It’s about finding out about you. Every time we have a new thought, the chemical balance in our

body changes. So, we are in a constant state of biological and psychological flux. And it can take a lot to manage that every day. So, whatever is going on in your mind, no matter how big or small it may seem, if it is there it is affecting you. If you want to let it out, whatever it might be, talk to a counsellor. We will listen. I have been an addiction counsellor for ten years, mainly working using CBT, (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), methods. However, it is my belief that building a relationship, which is the basis of Person Centred Therapy, underpins any other form of counselling. Having worked with many individuals over the years, I understand that underneath there are many and varied issues. These include childhood trauma, abuse, bereavement, as well as not coping with life in general. If issues like that are retained, then they will continue to drive choices and decisions, which is likely to see a continuation of the behaviour that brought the client to counselling in the first place.

Advice

Citizens Advice Campaign “Big Energy Saving Week” In January, Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire, which operates the outreaches in the Deepings, took part in the national campaign to raise awareness of energy issues, called “Big Energy Saving Week”. With great care taken on every move, have confidence in choosing Browns Removals…LET’S MOVE. T: 01733 204408 E: sales@brownsremovals.co.uk

www.brownsremovals.co.uk

The advice given fell into three areas: 1. Check. Read your meter regularly and check your bills to find out how much energy you’re using and that you’re not paying too much. Talk to your supplier or local Citizens Advice if you think your bill is wrong or have problems paying. You could be entitled to benefits, grants or discounts to boost your income and lower costs. 2. Switch. Customers could save hundreds of pounds by switching energy supplier or changing tariff. To compare prices, visit www.energycompare. citizensadvice.org.uk . Customers might be able to switch, even if you owe your supplier money. Talk to your local Citizens Advice for more details. 3. Save. Make your home energy efficient – Insulate lofts and walls, and get your boiler serviced or replaced to make sure it’s energy efficient. There may be schemes that can help you pay for this. Save money and energy – small changes can make a difference. Using low energy light bulbs or turning down the thermostat by 1 degree can save money. Find out more at www.simpleenergyadvice.org.uk .

Saint Lucian Experience

Clare Lockett

Travel Counsellor

St Lucia is a blanket of lush forest, emerald-cloaked mountains and palm-fringed beaches crowned by the magnificent Pitons. It’s regarded as one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean and one of the world’s most romantic destinations; St Lucia has long been a favourite with couples and honeymooners.  Plenty of Activities Gros Piton Hike The Pitons are perhaps the most iconic image of Saint Lucia, and the summit of Gros Piton showcases the island in all its glory, with spectacular views of its lush rainforest landscape and blue Caribbean Sea for miles. Visitors can embark on a half-day hike of Gros Piton, but at an impressive 2,600ft high, be warned that this hike is not for the faint-hearted!  Whale and Dolphin Watching Boat Tour Pilot whales, sperm whales and spotted dolphins all call the local waters home. See these magnificent creatures in their natural environment on a fun-filled boat trip. Deep-In-Aesthetics for the Latest in Aesthetic Enhancements within this, medical history is looked at and all options are discussed in complete confidence. There is also a cooling-off period, where the client can go away and think about the options discussed, and this will allow them to make a measured and informed decision. This sets his practice apart from “BOTOX parties”, where rash decisions can often be made en-masse.

Popular Market Deeping pharmacist and well-known member of the local community, Alistair Graham, recently decided to switch careers. He set up a beauty firm, offering the latest in aesthetic enhancements, realising that there is now a trend across all walks of life and age groups that makes people think that they need some aesthetic help. Alistair trained at Harley Street to carry out a number of procedures, which include lip enhancements, anti-wrinkle treatments and dermal fillers. The latter involves injections that fill out wrinkles, creases and frown-lines and also lines around the mouth, which deepen with age. A full, free consultation will be carried out by Alistair before any treatment is booked and

Opinions... by Matt Weston

They are everywhere. I have loads of them! In case you haven’t noticed. And I’m proud to have them and indeed proud to share them. To talk with confidence about them, in the hope that they might inspire, motivate, liberate or spread optimism. Not all options though are as positive. So, what is an opinion? According to the Oxford English dictionary… “noun. 1A view or judgement formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.” And there we have it. Something ‘not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.’ Yet so many of us base our decision-making on these opinions, and not our own. Rather, we give weight, credence and importance to the non-factual assertions of others. Yes, of course we hold value for the opinions of those closest to us, and those who we have chosen to be integral parts of our lives. Indeed, to fall in love with someone is to romantically connect with a person in all ways, and that will include their opinions, both inward and outward, and to connect with someone while intelligently discussing one’s opinions is a joy. But others’ opinions are becoming to some, a roadblock. An almost physical manifestation that prevents progress, or that compromises one’s confidence and ability to excel or to be happy! Providing any aspiration, lifestyle or goal is one that is kind and that does no harm, people should listen to their personal intuition and choose to ask advice from those they respect and admire and then follow their

20

D I S C O V E R I N G

drive and ambition, taking their own road. One that gives no access to negative opinions. Back yourself. And go all in 100%. As someone who is running a business, I also think about this from a slightly different tangent. Customers. Our customers. Who are they? Why are they our customers? And, how do we attract more of them? The most obvious ‘quote’ or commonly used assertion I can think of when it comes to ‘customers’ is “The customer is always right.” I find this to be a fascinating statement. Are they? Are the customers always right? This depends on your standpoint and it might seem crazy for me to outwardly posit such a question. Indeed, for me, it depends on who you want your customers to be and the way you get potential customers to see exactly what your business is about. Until a person sees, uses or feels, the reality of your service or product, they too are acting only on an opinion. And remember, what an opinion is… “noun. 1A view or judgement formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge”

T H E

Deepings

I sometimes relate this directly to price. From my experience over the last five years, I now know that the most common, immediate reasoning for a decision not to be an Empire Gym customer is price. There may be another gym or leisure facility close by that is cheaper. And to some, that is the first, last and final pivotal point upon which a decision is made … even before the quality of our service is considered. And that’s fine. Because what we provide can’t be provided at the prices offered by those who are cheaper. So, to those whose opinions on whether Empire Gym is a ‘good business’ depend solely on price, we will unfortunately not have a business-to-customer relationship. But the person is, of course, entitled to make their choice and I completely respect that. This leads back to ‘the customer is always right’. Ultimately, it depends on what the customer wants and what they are looking for. It is absolutely reasonable and acceptable to agree that the two sometimes don’t match. Only recently, through the transparency of social media, I have witnessed posts about the poor condition and cleanliness of another public leisure facility nearby. People were disappointed and surprised by the low standard of cleanliness. But

m a r ch 2 0 1 9

Health

this leisure facility is considerably cheaper than Empire Gym. We employ someone solely to be responsible for the cleanliness of our changing and shower facilities. This incurs a cost, an additional wage, but the quality of the end result is the polar opposite. Our facilities are extremely clean. So, do you spend your time and resources trying to convert people? Or do you spend those same resources on making the product better and better for those who buy into the real business idea? You can be in the same ‘business area’ as a number of other businesses but adopt a completely different business strategy. Our strategy, through quality of service, relationship-building and

providing clean facilities, while offering qualified professional advice, makes our business model look like one that is focussed on improving people’s quality of life, both physically and mentally, rather than occupying a space that might be taken up by your ‘traditional fitness club’. We are genuinely a family business who cares about improving people’s lives. This, in turn, feeds into the way we market our business. We use social media above all other avenues at the moment. It works. It allows immediate feedback and also gives a platform for people to talk about your business. And this is where we begin to excel. In investing in and believing in our ideas completely, we inspire and motivate people. Those people then

become advocates of the reality of our product/service. This is where ‘opinions’ become positively powerful, because people are able to give opinions based on experience and fact, and to discuss them publicly. They have more gravity as often now they are shared positive opinions too which allow people, who haven’t experienced what Empire has to offer first hand, a look behind ‘the curtain’. Ultimately, we do all we can to offer people a positive and kind experience. We also advertise in any way we feel will work. But Empire customers are people who appreciate the nuances of this service and attention to detail. And we hope that like-minded people will be looking for us as much as we are looking for them.

The Deepings Caravan Park – New Leisure Centre Facility to Open Soon

Summer is just around the corner so what better way to spend those sunny days than in the great outdoors? Better still, this little gem is right on our doorstep, and 2019 offers you more than ever before! Darren and Belinda have been owners and residents of The Deepings Caravan Park for seventeen years, and they always ensure that their guests are greeted with a warm welcome and friendly staff, including their adorable pug and French bulldog. They take great pride in knowing that the park is a safe environment for families, and all of the guests are friendly to one another, making it a pleasant close-knit community; a home from home. They are also generous enough to offer a pensioners’ rate; Sunday-Thursday £9 per night. It’s no surprise why guests keep coming back, time and time again. Open from March to October, the park provides accommodation for touring caravans, tents, motorhomes and static caravans (fifty weeks per year) with over one hundred and seventy pitches. There is a variety of facilities and activities on offer for guests, young and old, including a clubhouse, shop, kids’ play area, fishing, dog walking area and crazy golf. What’s more, the weekly evening entertainment is always popular amongst guests; bingo on Thursdays, an act, music and karaoke on Saturdays and quiz night on Sundays. The park is also hosting “Beerfest” on Saturday August 3rd this year. If glamping is more your style, the park has two fabulous glamping pods which are sure to take your fancy. They are available from £35 per night and sleep two adults and two children. Amenities include a TV with Freeview, heater, fridge, kettle and sofa bed. They have been incredibly popular ever since they opened in 2017, so if you want to book one for a night or two (or three!), it’s always best to phone in advance to avoid disappointment.

This year, in readiness for the start of the season in March, a new toilet block with under-floor heating for tourers will be operational. There have also been months of planning and building on site, as the new leisure centre looks set to open its doors in May this year. A £500,000 investment has been set aside for caravan owners and their guests to enjoy the centre which will comprise of two bowling alleys, an indoor soft play area, arcade games and a restaurant. For more information, visit www.thedeepings.com or call 01778 344335.

Positive ‘Cultural Conversation’ in The Deepings Almost thirty groups involved in the district’s culture have met in Market Deeping to talk about ways to build on the role that arts and heritage play.

There will be further opportunities for residents to have their say at public engagement events throughout March, April and May with a number of workshops and other events planned across the district.

The meeting, hosted by South Kesteven District Council, was the latest in a series of popular ‘conversations’ with stakeholders and partners in all four market towns, (Grantham, Stamford, Bourne and The Deepings). Leader of the Council, Councillor Matthew Lee, told the meeting: “Culture is a vital part of all our lives and provides our residents with a great quality of life. It can inspire people to new learning and development opportunities and it makes us an attractive location for people to move to. We have bold ambitions for every aspect of South Kesteven, and I have always been clear that we will achieve those aspirations through collaboration with other partners. This cultural conversation invites all partners, right across the district, to play their part in shaping our future.” People at the meeting described The Deepings as having an “artisan spirit and resilience” – and applauded the residents’ strong sense of community. The meeting has triggered a wider programme of consultation – online and face-to-face – during spring and early summer to encourage the ‘conversation’ to go further afield to ensure the broadest possible range of views.

m a rch 2 0 19

South Kesteven already has a rich vein of cultural activity, including two thriving arts centres and a varied festival programme that includes the Deepings Literary Festival, Gravity Fields Festival, Stamford’s Georgian Festival, and a new festival of cycling in and around Bourne. To be involved or to have individual informal conversations, please contact Michael Cross, InvestSK Head of Arts – (michael.cross@investsk. co.uk, or on 07966 299400) or Claire Saunders, Heritage Regeneration Officer – (claire.saunders@ investsk.co.uk). The Leader of South Kesteven District Council, Councillor Matthew Lee, explains the importance of culture across the district.

“Didn’t We Have a Love … erly Time the Day we Went to Strictly?” Apologies first of all, to anyone not familiar with the 1979 hit single by Fiddler’s Dram recounting their trip to Bangor – hence the title. However, I’m sure we’re all familiar with the phenomenon that is “Strictly Come Dancing”. Here, our own “Dancing Queen”, Claire, shares with us her recent fabulous day out at the “Strictly Live Tour” date at Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena on the afternoon of February 6th. Claire was accompanied by her mum and both were delighted to have been invited to travel in

style and see the stars, courtesy of leading local coach travel and excursions specialists, Shaws of Maxey. From the moment their driver, “Jolly” Jason, welcomed them aboard, issued clear instructions and helpful advice, eased his coach effortlessly through heavy traffic to return them safely and in extreme comfort, the treat was a wonderful success. Highlights abounded, including a show-stopping dance from judges, Darcey Bussell and Shirley Ballass, (not as if Aljaz, Pasha and co. really need showing how it should be done). Joe Sugg proved a worthy winner on the day, whilst Ore Oduba compered beyond compare … and Craig just had to offer his suggestion on how the day went for Claire and her mum … FAB – U – LOUS!!! Claire is very grateful for having been given the opportunity of experiencing one of Shaws’ many day trips offered this year. They are many and varied and offer extremely good value for money. Let Shaws of Maxey Help You Celebrate the Best of 2019 There’s lots to celebrate in 2019 so we’ve picked out some of this year’s interesting anniversaries and given you the opportunity to go along and experience a little bit of it for yourselves. Dare we remind you that it’s twentyfive years since Disney’s “The Lion King” first hit our screens, fifty years since The Beatles released “Abbey Road” with that iconic zebra crossing photograph on the cover, and thirty years since the world’s most successful rock and roll musical, “Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story” hit the stage? The Royals continue to provide us with anniversaries worthy of celebration, as 2019 marks two hundred years since the birth of Queen Victoria. Leeds Castle in Kent celebrates its 900th anniversary this year! It’s welcomed countless royal visitors, but it was King Henry VIII who transformed it from a fortified stronghold into a magnificent royal palace for his first wife*. The world of science and technology doesn’t miss out either. It is fifty years since Concorde’s maiden flight took

m a rch 2 0 19

place, and in 1995 this revolutionary aircraft broke the record for the fastest commercial flight time from New York to London at 2 hours, 52 minutes and 52 seconds (compared to at least seven hours if you flew today!) We also celebrate fifty years since Apollo 11 landed on the moon. And let’s not forget some incredible feats of British engineering. London’s Tower Bridge celebrates its 125th anniversary and is still raised around 850 times a year! Manchester’s Ship Canal also celebrates 125 years since it was officially opened to traffic; the locks, bridge tunnels and swing bridges remain mostly unchanged to this day. Finally, let’s remember the 75th anniversary of the remarkable D-Day Landings –described by Churchill as “undoubtedly the most complicated and difficult” campaign that had ever taken place. Like to know more? You’ll find links to all these anniversaries in our 2019 holiday and day trip brochures; call us for copies or visit our website. *Catherine of Aragon, in case you were wondering.

First to arrive is British rhubarb, an unmistakable taste of Spring & perfect in a crumble. They also taste sweeter & fresher than the robust hearted cabbages, so they are great for lighter Spring & Summer recipes ENJOY..... Purple Sprouting Broccoli. Boiled or steamed, it makes an excellent side dish when tossed in butter or oil. Also, try serving in a sauce with pasta or as a starter, covered in hollandaise

Your Garden

MARCH Gardening Tips March can be a busy month for sowing, particularly indoors – aubergines chillies and peppers –indoors or heated greenhouses – brassicas such as Brussels, sprouting broccoli cabbages, summer autumn and red. Cabbages can be given a head start by sowing the seeds under cover and planting on when all frost risk has passed. Keep the weeds at bay and hoe regularly.Don’t forget to feed your over-wintered crops such as onions, kale, spring cabbage - use blood, fish and bone meal, chicken manure or seaweedbased organic fertiliser. Also, herbs such as rosemary and sage will benefit from a good trim, and chives and mint can be propagated by dividing them and re-planting. If you have chitted your first early potatoes and the ground is not frozen, they can be planted out from mid-March or early April but it is well worth covering them to protect them from the late frosts. Don’t forget to add a light sprinkling of fertiliser to the trench and plant earlies about 30cm (12inches) apart with 40-50cm (16-60 inches) between rows, with the shoots pointing upwards. Second earlies and maincrop need more growing space, so plant them about 38cm (15inches) apart and 75cm (30inches) between rows. When the shoots appear, earth up each plant by covering it with a ridge of soil. If you want to grow asparagus, now is the time to prepare your bed and plant the crowns by digging a trench 12 inches deep and adding some well-rotted manure. Make a 4 inch ridge at the base and spread the roots of the crown over the ridge, replace the soil, leaving the tips just visible. Water in and add mulch. Don’t forget to leave the asparagus for two years before harvesting –it’s well worth the wait! Other jobs for this month include: • Lettuces and other salad crops can be sown, either indoors or outdoors, under cloches or in cold frames. Tomato and cucumber seeds can be sown indoors but wait until the end of the month. • Plant out onion and shallot sets. • Early varieties of carrot, beetroot, spring onions, peas, chard, parsnips, spinach and broad beans can be sown into the open ground. • Last chance for planting bare-rooted fruit trees and bushes. • Feed and mulch fruit trees –fertilise the base, water in and then cover with well-rotted manure or compost to act as a mulch. • Check cabbages for caterpillars and pick off. • Remove dead leaves from cabbages and Brussels. Happy Gardening!

Over the next few months, we will be looking in more detail at these scams and the warning signs which could prevent you from parting with your hard-earned cash. So, postal scams … what are they are how can we spot the signals? An official-looking letter drops through the door – you open it and to your delight and amazement you have won a substantial amount of cash in a prize draw, or have been left a large sum in a will. The letter instructs you to share your personal and bank details so that the money can be paid directly into your account. What do you do? That glossy catalogue landing on the doormat is selling ‘miracle’ diet supplements, and that oh so accurate letter from the experienced clairvoyant has got your first personal reading spot on, but you need to pay for a follow-up. What do you do? All these seem too good to be true – free money, a better future and a new, improved you! That’s because they are; in fact these are some of the clever postal scams currently causing misery to people locally and further afield. The correspondence will look ‘official’ – cleverly designed to fool the recipient; often with lots of attention to detail. Some tell-tale signs include: • Requests are made for money first, before getting the prize. • Use of the customer’s first name to make the letter look personal. • The letter is written to put people under pressure to reply. • PO boxes are used, instead of a full postal address. • ‘Too good to be true’, dazzling offers. • A director’s name, picture, signature and stamps are used to make it look official. • Fake testimonials or money-back guarantees are often used. • The letter often asks the recipient to keep their winnings a secret. ADVICE Don’t reply to unsolicited mail e.g. lotteries and prize draw letters – instead, either return to sender, or send it to the Royal Mail at FREEPOST SCAM MAIL. Do sign up for FREE to the Mailing Preference Service (MPS) at www.mpsonline.org.uk or on call 0845 703 4599; this will help stop sales and marketing mail from within the UK. If you think you, or a loved one, may have been the victim of a scam, report it to Action Fraud. To find out how you can sign up for the fight against fraud, and read some tips on spotting a scam, visit www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk. In addition, Safe Local Trades has its own advice on tell-tale signs of a lottery, prize draw or sweepstake scam. Legal Corner

Purchasing Your Home in Joint Names? When purchasing property in joint names, your solicitor/conveyancer must ask you if you wish to purchase as “Joint Tenants” or “Tenants in Common”. It is vital that your solicitor/conveyancer explains these terms, and advises on what is right for you, based upon your personal circumstances. Joint Tenants Under a joint tenancy, you both own the whole property. You will have an equal share but, if one of you dies, the whole property will automatically pass to the survivor, even if you have made a will leaving your “share” to someone else. In most cases, this may be appropriate for husbands and wives, but there are reasons why they should hold as “tenants in common”. Buying a property with your partner or friend may involve contributing different amounts to the deposit, or you may be relying on parents to fund the deposit. Also, one party may wish to make a will, leaving the whole or part of their “share” to a third party, (for example a child from a previous relationship). These are just a

few examples, but there can be many reasons why you might need to own as “tenants in common”. Tenants in Common Under this arrangement, you will be joint owners, but you can specify the “shares” in which you wish to own the property. Although you can still be equal owners, your solicitor/conveyancer should advise on whether or not owning the property as “tenants in common” is the right choice for you, (for example, you may wish to protect the deposit you have paid before the net equity is divided equally on a future sale of the property). When buying, you naturally don’t want to think about the possibility that you may break up. However, the sad truth is

that it does sometimes happen. When “joint tenants” split up and have to sell, many of our clients say, “I wish I had taken your advice to hold as tenants in common”. Also, it is surprising how many people say that the option of owning as “joint tenants” or “tenants in common” was not explained to them when they purchased. This is one of many important aspects of a conveyancing transaction that can be overlooked. Sadly, we believe this is because the emphasis has shifted from wanting the job done properly to wanting it done quickly, even though your home is probably the most valuable asset you will purchase! In fact, some agents who make referrals, rate service based upon speed rather than efficiency.

Your Finances

Attention - Higher Rate Taxpayers Wanted! - by Richard Ash & Matthew Biggs - Liberty Partnership Ltd

• A higher rate tax payer £60 – tax relief of £20 will be given and an additional £20 claimed.

Unless you really enjoy giving your hard-earned money to the tax man, I think it’s safe to say we would all like to pay as little tax as possible – especially if you are subject to ‘higher’ or ‘additional’ rates of taxation. For the 2018/19 tax year, if you earn above £46,350, the excess is taxed at 40% - ouch! However, there are some ways in which you can manage the amount of income tax you pay. Sounds interesting – right? One of the most effective ways of managing your income tax liability is to utilise what’s called your ‘annual allowance’. Your annual allowance relates to the amount you can contribute to your personal pension and receive tax relief.

46

D I S C O V E R I N G

• An additional rate tax payer £55 - tax relief of £20 will be given and an additional £25 claimed.

Tax relief? This is an amount that is added to your pension contribution by the government. The amount received is based on your marginal rate of tax – so if you’re a higher rate tax payer, you will effectively receive 40% relief on your contribution. In simple terms a £100 pension contribution will cost: • A basic rate tax payer £80 – tax relief of £20 will be given.

If you would like to talk to one of our experienced Financial Planners about utilising your annual allowance before the end of the 2018/19 tax year, then please contact the office on 01778 342291 to arrange a FREE initial consultation. But be quick – though technically you only have until the start of April to take advantage of this tax year’s annual allowance, you will definitely need to come and see us sooner!!!

History

Discovering . . . the River Welland

Rex Needle

A

river is part of a town’s historic status from past centuries and so it is with the waterway which runs through the Deepings, flowing from west to east, one of the three major lowland rivers traversing eastern England to their outfall in the Wash, along with the Nene and the Great Ouse to the south, while also providing an attractive Sunday afternoon walk for those who live around its banks. The Welland rises in the Hothorpe Hills at Sibbertoft in Northamptonshire before flowing eastwards to Market Harborough, Stamford and the Deepings, then on to Spalding and the North Sea, a distance of 65 miles and with its tributaries, forms a river system with a catchment area of more than 600 square miles. The Deepings had a river trade from the earliest times but this was given added impetus in the early 17th century when it was opened up from Stamford to the sea, bringing added employment and prosperity. Until then, several water mills on the Welland between there and Market Deeping had been making it difficult for commercial traffic and in 1571, merchants appealed to Queen Elizabeth to construct a new cut which would make the river navigable throughout. The work was eventually approved in 1620 to allow the passage of boats, lighters and other vessels for a

48

fee of 3d. per ton, so bringing added opportunities for the Deepings where wharves, landing stages and jetties had already sprung up along the river bank to handle cargoes of coal, wood, wine and provisions, often brought in by convoys of five vessels at a time, each carrying twenty tons, and drawn by horses along tow paths that can still be seen today in several places. When the barges arrived in Market Deeping, workmen would be waiting at the jetties close to the main street to unload and the goods transported by horse and cart to nearby warehouses to await sale and distribution. During the 19th century, one family owned several barges which were built in the yard of their house overlooking the river and the boat owner had a special protruding oriel window built into the front of his property in order that he could sit in comfort and watch his craft as they hove into view. The sporting tradition along the river also has an eminent place in our history, embracing fishing, wildfowling, boating and skating, and an annual raft race which has more recent origins as a popular event attracting an assortment of homemade craft raising funds for the benefit of local charities. Will & Probate Services

Will & Probate Services Nominated for National Paralegal Awards by Nick Ash, Managing Director We have just been notified that we are finalists in the National Paralegal Awards 2019. We have made the shortlist in two different categories; Will & Probate Services is nominated as ‘Will Writing Organisation of the Year’ and our Managing Director, Nick Ash, is nominated as ‘Paralegal of the Year’. The annual National Paralegal Awards, organised in association with the Professional Paralegal Register, are an exciting opportunity for the legal sector to reward and recognise the outstanding paralegals in the UK. The Gala Final is on March 29th in the Crystal Room at The Mayfair Hotel in London, where we will find

out if we have been awarded one of the prestigious accolades. Speaking about the nominations, Nick commented, “Paralegal law is an up-and-coming sector of the legal profession and for us to be recognised amongst the very best in the sector is humbling. My team in Market Deeping, and the franchisees who represent the brand around the

country, have all had a huge part to play in the success that we have had to date.” Will & Probate Services are on a journey to become one of the best known, most trusted legal firms in the UK, and recognition from the National Paralegal Awards is confirmation that we are heading in the right direction.

Pets and Vets

Blood Testing Older Pets Taking blood samples from humans and animals is routine nowadays and can give a good insight into the health of your pet, especially our ‘senior citizens’. Dogs and cats over the age of eight (or five for the giant breeds) are considered to be ‘senior citizens’ and we expect them to start slowing down. They tend to sleep more and are less playful. But there could be other reasons why your pet may be slowing down. The most obvious is arthritis and joint disease. Wear and tear over the years can cause damage to protective cartilage covering within joints. The discomfort stimulates the body to produce inflammation around the joint and bony growths to try to fix the joint in position. Your pet initially feels pain and discomfort and the joint begins to seize up with a reduced range of movement and flexibility. There are many new drugs available to ease the discomfort of arthritic joints and finding the most suitable one for your pet is often a case of trial and error. However, when pets are relieved of this pain, owners often report a very noticeable difference in their pet’s attitude and ability to exercise. The anti-inflammatories will not take away excess bone growth and your pet may still hobble, but he’ll be in a lot more comfort. Routine blood testing in older animals is also very useful for the early detection of disease. A small sample sent to the lab can reveal a lot about your pet’s health.

Blood smears tell us about blood counts. A reduction of red blood cells and the oxygen-carrying protein (haemoglobin) they carry, is known as anaemia. But this is only a symptom and the pathologists at the lab can help us determine the cause of the anaemia in the first place. An increase in white blood cells can certainly be due to infection, but changes can also be due to stress, drugs, parasitic disease and cancers of the bloodstream and a pathologist’s interpretation is very important here too. Biochemistry of the blood informs us of the workings of the internal organs, whether the kidneys, liver or thyroid organs are functioning as they should. Early detection of change within these organs means that investigation of disease and treatment can begin, and there is a better chance of curing the disease or slowing the rate of deterioration. Often a urine sample is needed as well, and this can be tricky for owners to obtain. A small foil tray, that has never had sugar in it, slid underneath a dog as it is peeing can get enough for testing, (usually a teaspoonful is plenty). Cats can be a lot harder and we have artificial litter, in the form if tiny non-absorbent plastic balls, that can be used in place of normal cat litter. Hopefully, routine testing on the older pet will find no problems at all, but having that peace of mind is well worth a thimble-full of blood.

School News Baston C. of E. Primary School At Baston, we are working hard to become an Eco recognised school. We have already achieved ‘silver’ status and are continuing to work hard in order to gain our Green Eco flag. School Council are heading the work and are acting as ‘Eco Warriors’. We have delivered an assembly to inform the whole school about the project and each class was given a topic to study and asked to create a display.

We have also held a non-uniform day to raise money for The Woodland Trust and for The Library Bus, our ongoing project that the PTA are working for. Pupils were asked to ‘Go Green’, or dress as a woodland animal for the day.

William Hildyard C. of E. Primary and Nursery School Due to the fantastic generosity of Barker Storey Matthews, William Hildyard C. of E. Primary and Nursery School now have a brand new sports kit. In the Spotlight

The Priory Church - Strong Musical Tradition and Seeking a New Director of Music

T

he Priory Church of Deeping St James has been a place of worship for around 880 years and music has long been an important element of the life of the church. The church has a robed choir of around fifteen members who sing at most Sunday morning services, giving a strong lead to the services, as well as singing anthems and motets. There is a monthly choral evensong and there are also special services at Christmas and Easter. We are fortunate to have a fine 3-manual organ. On the first Sunday of the month, music at the 10am service is led by our music group, ‘Psalm 98’, which was formed around four years ago, and is run by one of our choir members, a retired professional musician. The group has a varied and unusual line-up, including a keyboard, piano, bass guitar, oboe, recorder, cajon, saxophone, clarinet and violin! The Priory Church has long hosted concerts, including organ recitals and concerts such as those in the ‘Music in Quiet Places’ series. 2018 saw the expansion of our concert series from a mainly classical base to include events to attract a wider audience. We enjoyed the Rutland Big Band and a well-known folk band, ‘Pennyless’, both of which drew large and appreciative audiences, with many people visiting the Priory Church for the first time. Our last concert of 2018 was a screening of the silent movie, ‘Phantom of the Opera’ with an improvised accompaniment by Nigel Ogden, the organist who until recently hosted the BBC programme, ‘The Organist Entertains’. In 2017, the Priory appointed a salaried, professional Director of Music who brought energy and drive to all aspects of the church’s musical life, particularly in relation to increasing choir membership

and the development of younger voices; working with schools to create opportunities for interaction with the Priory; developing the concert series with an eye to generally increasing awareness of the Priory as a venue for wide and varied music-making in the community. Unfortunately, for personal reasons, the person appointed as Director of Music tendered his resignation after only a

short time in post, so we are now looking for another Director to take up these challenges. Further information about our church and its music can be found on our website at www.dsj.org.uk Are you such a person or do you know of anyone who might fill this position? If you do, please e-mail nicolete. fisher@btinternet.com
