Eat the Season

Pork Chops with Gooseberry Sauce Glorious gooseberries are at their best in June and their fragrant acidic taste enhances the flavour of the pork.

Method 1 Remove the tops and tails from the gooseberries.

2 Place all the ingredients for the sauce in a pan.

3 Cook slowly on a gentle heat until the skins of the gooseberries start to burst.

4 Meanwhile, heat a tablespoon of oil in a large heavy- bottomed pan. Place the pan over medium-high heat and let the oil get nice and hot.

5 Season the pork chops with salt and pepper.

6 Cook them on the both sides for 3-4 minutes.

7 When the chops are cooked place them on a plate.

8 Smother the chops with the gooseberry sauce and serve immediately.

With Father’s Day fast approaching, we thought we’d look this month at some dads in business in the local area, and how they see being a father can be affected by the demands of the business, but also what benefits it can bring to the family.

MARK JOYCE What is your business name and what do you do?

Powerplant Ltd., Our business offers service and repairs of generating sets as well as sales of new and second-hand generators to all market sectors.

How long have your worked for yourself?

Powerplant Ltd. was established in January 2017 and has enjoyed a very successful first year of business. We look forward to providing generator service repairs and sales for many years to come.

CLIFF BARRETT Cliff owns and runs the very popular “Deeping Car and Van Hire” firm, based in Deeping St. Nicholas. He has two children, a two year old boy called Barbaro, and a seven-month old daughter, Lateysha.

How do you balance your business with family life?

The first twelve to eighteen months of any new business can be a challenge. Thankfully, with good support from my wife and children, we have been able to work out a good routine of work time and family time. We are based in Frognall and live in Northborough which cuts down on commuting time and means that I can get home to my family far quicker at the end of a busy day.

His interview considered the ways in which his own father, Arthur, (now retired but who still lives locally), had such an influence on Cliff. That, in turn, might well influence the ways in which the young Barretts will grow up.

What was the most important piece of advice your father gave you?

He taught me to cherish every moment and always take responsibility for things you do and you learn something new every day.

What key advice do you feel you will give to your children?

Do your best and work hard and always make time for family.

Whilst growing up, what challenges did you pose for your father?

I grew up in a large family and was very active. I must admit I was very challenging for my dad but, without him, I wouldn’t be the man I am or where I am today, so thank you dad!

What is your favourite activity to do as a family?

We enjoy spending time together as a family, whether that’s in the garden or out and about.

One of our favourite local venues to visit is Burghley House. We also have two dogs so any adventure that allows us to get some exercise for all of us is preferred.

What will you be doing on Father’s Day? Do you make time for yourself?

We will start the day with a quiet morning at home, perhaps a bit of breakfast in bed. My parents live locally as well so our afternoon will be spent at their house celebrating together.

Recently I have been making a concerted effort to take a bit of time each week to exercise.

I attend classes at The Spin Room 2-3 times a week which helps me to get rid of any workrelated stress. Other than that, a good project in the garden, with my family around me is all I need to recharge for the week ahead.

What are the biggest challenges you will face from your own little dears?

Those dreaded “terrible twos” at the moment and then, later, when they become more independent ….!

Is it likely that your children are going to “follow in dad’s footsteps”?

Yes - You can see how my son in particular has always been interested in everything I do, both in business and for pleasure, so I do hope so.

MARK JOLLEY

SIMON FOREMAN What is your business name and what do you do?

Director of Smartheat Plumbing and Heating Ltd. I am a plumbing and heating engineer, working in both domestic and commercial sectors. My role is a varied one involving general management and daily running of the business, as well as site surveys, design and supervising our team of eight engineers.

You will also find me “on the tools” from time to time, so who says men can’t multi-task?

How long have your worked for yourself?

I have worked in this industry since 1986, working for a family-run company. When I became a father, I decided to start my own business with long term work colleague and friend, Kevin Hobbs. In 2005, we set up as Smartheat, carrying out service and installation works, slowly increasing the business to where we are today.

How do you balance your business with family life?

Being in a service industry, Smartheat offers a 24-hour emergency response which can make it difficult to switch off. However, we do have staff on call to cover those needs. I enjoy cooking, so can often be found in the kitchen of an evening and involve the children as much as I can. I like entertaining and preparing meals for my friends too.

Sunday is family time. From September through to May, my son and youngest daughter play for the local rugby club the Deeping Dragons. SmartHeat have supported them on their April Tour for the past three years, providing them with t-shirts. We attend every Sunday with their mum and big sister to watch them train and compete, so that we can spend time together.

What is your favourite activity to do as a family?

We love to get away for weekends with the family, visiting friends and exploring new places.

Market Deeping-based driving instructor, Mark Jolley, writes a monthly column on all matters associated with driving for “Discovering Deeping”. He is married to Hayley and they have three children; daughters, Paige aged eleven, and Tayla who is nine, and a son Ozzie, a typically challenging, but very loving and amusing, two-year-old toddler.

What is your business name and what do you do?

I am an independent driving instructor, and my business which is still only in its first year, is called Jolleys. I find being a driving instructor is ideal, not just for myself for the job satisfaction I get from seeing pupils progress to becoming competent drivers, but it’s perfect for my family too.

How long have your worked for yourself?

After over twenty years in retail management, I decided to move into an area where I could work for myself, doing something I’ve always loved – driving a car, so last year I trained to become a driving instructor and now have my own business.

How do you balance your business with family life?

Being self-employed, I am able to offer a structured working week which is flexible for my pupils, yet also as important to myself, providing me with quality family time.

What is your favourite activity to do as a family?

I truly believe even little things such as sharing meal times together and assisting my children with their school work are so important.

Sometimes, people overlook the importance of play time these days, yet I honestly find it most rewarding and I take great pride, with Hayley, in seeing our children developing so well.

What will you be doing on Father’s Day? Do you make time for yourself?

With Father’s Day approaching, I am looking forward to spending a lovely day with my family.

A nice cup of tea in my favourite Spurs mug and a few biscuits will be just perfect. Maybe it’s pushing my luck a bit to expect a full breakfast in bed though!

Both of my daughters are part of the local amateur dramatics group, The Priory Players. Our eldest daughter is a keen singer and our son plays drums with the school band, so I always look forward to watching their performances throughout the year.

What will you be doing on Father’s Day? Do you make time for yourself?

I am looking forward to chilling out and relaxing at home with my family or maybe even a weekend away? Being the cook in the house, it’s the one day in the year that my wife may make my breakfast!!

“The Narrow Road to the Deep North” by Richard Flanagan What better gift for Father’s Day than a thought-provoking read? Here at “Discovering Deeping” we love a gripping story, so for this month’s book club we are suggesting Richard Flanagan’s “The Narrow Road to the Deep North”. This noholds-barred book is not for the faint-hearted!

A tribute to his own father, Richard Flanagan’s Booker Prize winning novel tells the story of Australian prisoner-of-war, Dorrigo Evans. Now in his seventies, former surgeon Colonel Evans’ sometimes graphic retrospective looks back on his life, which centres on the atrocities suffered by the thousands of captives building the Burma Death Railway after the fall of Singapore to the Japanese during World War Two. The Australian prisoners’ acknowledged leader, Evans wrestles with his own inner demons, whilst struggling to bring rudimentary medical aid and hope to the men suffering unspeakably brutal and inhumane treatment at the hands of their captors.

Pre-school classes Tu Danse Studios in Newark Road, Peterborough have several classes for children, some of them from a very young age.

Dance with my baby

A great class for new mums, thirty minutes of gentle exercise with your baby in a sling, followed by a coffee and a chat. A lovely way to meet other new mums.

Thursdays at 1pm - Cost £5.00

Mummy and Me

For toddlers, a chance to have fun dancing with mummy or daddy, and a wonderful music and movement class, using props, songs and interacting dances.

The class is for thirty minutes and costs £5.50, on Saturdays at 9.15am and Tuesdays at 10am.

Baby Boogie For ages two to four. A chance for your little one to go it alone with lots of fun dancing, singing and mime, using props such as scarves, bean bags and musical instruments.

The class lasts thirty minutes and costs £5.50. There is a waiting room for parents and a chance to grab a coffee.

Dancin’ Tots

It’s very hard to know what style of dance your young child may take to, so using our professional experience and feedback from our customers over the last ten years, we have devised a syllabus for our “Dancin’ Tots” classes that incorporate the three main genres of dance, (ballet, tap and modern).

The half-hour classes cost £5.50 and work on a weekly rotation of these styles and are very popular. Classes are held on Tuesdays at 4pm or Saturdays at 9.30am and 10.15am.

Top tips for healthy eyes In the last two issues I explained the importance of having a regular eye exam and how to protect your eyes from harmful Ultraviolet rays this summer. I have some further tips that can keep your eyes healthy: Eat healthily Eating a healthy, balanced diet reduces your risk of eye disease.

Include lots of omega-3 fats, found in oily fish, and lutein, found in dark-green, leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale. Vitamins A, C and E are also helpful, so eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

If you have a family history of macular degeneration (loss of central vision), ask your optometrist about taking nutritional supplements.

Wear prescribed glasses Many eye and vision problems develop or increase as we get older.

Contrary to the myth, wearing glasses and contact lenses don’t make your eyesight worse – they help your eyes work more efficiently.

Take regular breaks When you work on something close up, such as a computer, tablet or smartphone, your eye muscles are active. This may cause tiredness and headaches, even in those with normal sight. Follow the 20/20/20 rule – every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away, for 20 seconds. And don’t forget to blink, as this helps prevent your eyes drying out.

Stop smoking Many people are unaware of the link between smoking and eye disease. If you smoke, stop. Smoking significantly increases the risk of developing eye diseases, such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.

However long you have smoked it’s never too late to benefit from quitting and reducing your risk.

Avoid dry eyes Eyes become dry, tired and sore if you are not producing enough tears or you have poor-quality tears.

Central heating, air-conditioning and computer use can make it worse.

Many adults suffer with dry eyes due to a health condition or medication.

Lubricating eye drops can soothe irritation and reduce discomfort. You may find taking omega-3 supplements helps over time. Drink plenty of water and remember to blink often. If your eyes are persistently dry, tell your optometrist.

Research your family history Many eye conditions run in families, from simple long and short sight to more serious diseases, such as glaucoma. Knowledge of problems with sight can help detect a condition before it becomes serious.

ather’s Day is of course the day when the focus is on dad much more so than any other day of the year. Dad is a son’s first hero and a daughter’s first love. Young children are influenced by the things dad says and the things dad does; they watch his every move, mirror his every action. If dad is sedentary, there is a good chance his children will be too. adulthood. The Canadian study revealed that parental encouragement alone makes a difference in the amount of physical activity a child undertakes so it’s reassuring that even small demonstrations of support, regardless of whether you are physically active yourself, have a positive effect on the future lifestyle and health of your child.

Parental attitudes toward health and fitness have been linked to influencing how children view exercise. Research shows that parents who exercise regularly are more likely to have children who willingly get in on the action too.

However, being active as a family might have a pretty small window of opportunity as other studies indicate that when it comes to family fitness, the impact of parental influence often decreases as children age, so getting children involved in exercise early will encourage them to continue training independently as they negotiate teenage years and eventually graduate into adulthood.

Children innately realise that mum and dad are their educators, mentors, heroes, supporters and role models throughout their lives. Are Your Feet Ready for the Summer?

his month, Rachael Baker, one of two registered chiropodists / podiatrists at the Wellhead Practice, explains some common, everyday foot conditions. Rachael brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the practice, having worked in the NHS and private practice in this field for nearly forty years.

Q: Rachael, what is one of the more everyday conditions you help with?

practitioners here. My colleague, Matthew Philips, joins me and we perform the procedure together.

A: Simple nail cutting. Many patients really struggle to trim their own nails. This can be due to reduced flexibility, (preventing patients from reaching their feet), or perhaps due to osteoarthritis of the hands, making it hard to hold nail clippers. Even inadequate eyesight can pose a problem. Here, we offer a shorter, dedicated nail cutting appointment (ÂŁ22) which is ideal if your feet are generally in good condition, and you only need a trim.

These are just a few of the conditions our chiropodists can help you with. If you have any foot concerns, please ring us and our receptionists can arrange an appointment or some practitioner advice. Since starting the practice in 2012, we have gradually expanded our chiropody clinics and now offer appointments four days per week, including evenings and Saturday mornings too.

Q: What else do you commonly see?

A: Thick nails. Trauma to the nail bed, perhaps from dropping something onto the toe or even poorly fitting shoes, can cause these. Treatment involves reducing the thickness, using the nail drill and offering advice on things like footwear, to help reduce recurrence.

Fungal nails. These affect one or many nails with a discoloured and thickened appearance and are often crumbly in texture.

Treatment is by applying a topical lacquer to the nail or via oral medication. As the fungus has to grow out of the nail, treatment can take over twelve months.

Involuted nails. These curve round and press into the sides of your toe. The temptation is often to cut down the sides but this can lead to in-growing nails. I advise letting the nails grow and to clear out the edge of the nail with an old tooth brush using moisturising cream along the sides. A build-up of dead skin, soap, sock fluff etc. can put extra pressure on the nail, causing pain.

In-growing toe nails. Incorrect nail cutting, direct injury or picking at toe nails can lead to a spike of nail to grow into the flesh of the toe. Treatment ranges from cutting the nail correctly and removing the spike, to removal of the side or whole nail with surgery, under local anaesthetic.

Deepings Swimmers Shine at the 2017 British Championships Three Deepings Swimming Club swimmers were in outstanding form at the British Championships recently, reaching three finals and posting multiple club records and personal bests.

Isabel Spinley, Bailie Harrison and Alex Wray competed in eight events at the Championships, which took place in April at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

In her first British Championships, 16-year-old Isabel exceeded expectations by making two finals.

She finished third in the 200m Butterfly Junior Final, for those looking to qualify for the European Junior Championships, setting a new Deepings Swimming Club record of 2.15.42.

Isabel went one better in the 100m Butterfly, swimming another club record in the heat of 1.00.93 to make the senior Open Final. Isabel finished eighth in the final, an exceptional achievement.

The 19-yearold made the Target Tokyo Final for the 50m Freestyle, which is for potential swimmers at the World Junior Championships and Commonwealth Youth Games. Alex had a sensational swim to win the final, in a new Deepings Swimming Club record of 22.66 seconds.

Deepings Head Coach, Lynn Chapman, commented, “Deepings is a small club, but these three swimmers have shown what is possible with hard work and dedication. They are an inspiration to all of our swimmers.”

Parkinson’s with Lewy Body Disease Dementia with Lewy body is diagnosed when someone has the symptoms of dementia either before or at the same time as developing

Parkinson’s-like problems with movement (called motor symptoms).

But in some cases of dementia with Lewy body, no motor symptoms may develop at all.

The name comes from the Lewy body – tiny protein deposits – that can be found in certain parts of the brains of people with the condition.

Dementia with Lewy body affects a person’s memory, language, concentration and attention. It also affects their ability to recognise faces, carry out simple actions and their ability to reason.

The runs leave the Embankment Athletics Track, in Bishop’s Road, Peterborough, every Wednesday from May 3rd to July 5th. They are part of the Healthy Peterborough campaign and everyone is welcome to attend, with all abilities catered for. Morning runs are from 7.30am to JUNE 2017

All three had visited on a number of occasions before, and members were pleased to see them join this lively and active Club.

Words from the Ex-Mayor Wayne Lester

This is my final article for “Discovering Deeping”, as I retired as your Town Mayor on May 10th. Councillor, Mrs Pauline Redshaw was voted in by majority to be our new Mayor and Chair of the Town Council, and may I congratulate Pauline on her appointment. I would like to thank all the staff who work for the Council for all their hard work and support they have given me over the last year, and I would also like to thank all the Councillors who supported me.

On Wednesday May 3rd, I visited the Army Cadets at the Deeping Detachment to present The Mayor’s Cadet Consort, 2016 – 2017, with an award to show my gratitude for her help at events during the year. Well done Paige!

Two days later, we held the Annual Town Meeting at the Community Centre, where over forty residents attended, along with various volunteer groups. I would like to thank everyone for their attendance. We will be looking to engage with SKDC on how we can assist in making improvements and aiding the ongoing maintenance with local friendship groups, should the need arise.

I have also presented to my nominated charities this year, The Deepings Men’s Group and The Army Cadet Force Deeping Detachment, each a cheque for just over £1,200. Thank you to all of you who supported me over the year in raising funds for both of these worthwhile

History

Discovering . . . Deeping St James in 1900 - Rex Needle

I

magine being able to step back in time and see the place where we live as it was in years past and although such a transition is impossible, we are able to get a glimpse from old picture postcards that reflect an unhurried way of life totally unknown today.

the Bell and the Railway hotels and the Three Tuns which can be seen on the right of the photograph although now demolished, as well as a Working Men’s Institute and a number of beer retailers, later known as off-licences.

The most dramatic change is the absence of vehicles because motorised traffic was rare a century ago and horse-drawn carts and vans commonplace, such as here at Deeping St James in 1900, a village large enough to have its own railway station as part of the Great Northern network as well as two schools, one for boys and girls with a daily attendance of 170 pupils and another for infants with 96 children.

Behind the imposing brick wall was the gasworks established by the Market Deeping Gas, Light & Coke Company in 1855 to provide heating and lighting for homes and businesses in the locality while the row of white-washed thatched cottages was demolished during the house building boom of later years to make way for new homes in what is now Godsey Lane.

This photograph of the High Street looking westwards towards Market Deeping was taken around that time and despite many changes, remains recognisable today.

The population of the village was 1,501 [1891 census], less than a quarter of the 7,051 we have today [2011 census] while the housing estates of the 20th century that have thrust the village into the commuter belt were yet to appear.

Public houses are an indicator of social change and despite its small population, Deeping St James had several, notably the Waterton Arms which was then run by a woman, Mrs Maria Healey, the Queen’s Head, the George and Dragon, the Rose and Crown, 28

Apart from several farmers and the usual butchers, bakers and grocers, tradesmen working in the village reflect a way of life long gone, notably the saddler, Daniel Wells with premises on the right, while other small businesses that have since disappeared included a glass and china dealer, blacksmith, basket maker, boot maker, chimney sweep, coal merchant, carriage builder, dressmaker, draper, monumental mason, tinman and brazier, watchmaker and wheelwright, all of whom appear to have been making a good living despite the small population.

New Tallington Care Home to Create New Jobs A brand new care facility named Tallington Lodge will create a number of jobs for the local community.

This new Care Home is located on Main Road, Tallington and will provide essential specialist dementia and residential care. Amongst the jobs created will be a variety of full and part-time positions, and details will soon be published, for people to apply online.

’m sure that if you are a regular watcher of Gardener’s World you will have seen the feature on “no dig” gardening. I was intrigued: what’s not to like? – Less weeds, healthier soil and no back-breaking digging! So I have been having a browse on www.charlesdowding.co.uk. It doesn’t seem right not to dig, but I’m not getting any younger and if it makes things easier and saves time, then surely it’s the way to go.

While it is highly unlikely that there will be a frost, the bugs and beasties will be enjoying munching on your plants, so be vigilant and keep them down to manageable levels. If you haven’t adopted “no dig”, then you will have the perennial problem of weeds. They need to be kept at bay as they will take nutrients and water from your crops or shade them from the sunlight. So

When transplanting out young plants, place something around the base of the plant to create a collar e.g. a piece of carpet, cardboard or fleece.

Other jobs to do this month include: ● Plant out vegetables that you have grown from seed, but make sure you harden them off before planting out in their final position. ● Thin out seedlings and plant others in their final growing positions. ● Earth up potatoes and, towards the end of the month, harvest earlies.

● Hoe regularly and particularly when the soil is dry, as the severed and exposed roots will die quickly. If you hoe when the soil is damp, remove remains so that they won’t re-grow.

● Cut down broad beans and peas just above the surface and use for compost, but leave the roots in the ground as a good source of nitrogen.

● Spread mulches such as garden compost, well-rotted manure or bark chips, to suppress weeds, or use lightproof membrane to kill more established weeds.

● Crops to plant out include; summer squashes, courgettes, leeks, runner beans, sprouting broccoli and sweetcorn.

●Make sure that you don’t let weeds flower; you will only get new crops of weeds from their seeds.

Pests are also becoming more noticeable in the warmer weather, so don’t forget to net brassicas to protect them from the pigeons, and it is a good idea to protect carrots from carrot fly by covering with a fine mesh. Cabbage root fly, which attacks the roots of brassicas, is caused by female flies laying their

Take your phone for a walk in the country

I

f you’d like to try a very positive and enjoyable use of modern IT and benefit from a healthy walk in the countryside, then download the app for your smartphone and try out Geocaching.

What is Geocaching?

Think of it as a type of treasure hunt.

All over the world geocachers, like my wife and I, have placed small containers hidden in various locations for people to find. Mostly you will pass these by and have no idea they are there, but with the use of a smartphone and the satellite Global Positioning System (GPS) you can hunt out these ‘treasure’ boxes.

How does it work?

All you need is your mobile smartphone, a geocaching app and a free account at Geocaching.com.

Once you have those you can open the app (or go to the webpage)

and search any location for hidden geocaches.

The illustration here shows the result for searching for Bourne. If you are unfamiliar with geocaching then you may well be surprised at how many are out there and it is the same around the globe.

If you search on a web browser you can click each geocache and get its reference, latitude and longitude but today’s smartphone apps make life even easier.

Carry out the search on your phone app, select the geocache that you want to hunt down and click navigate to the geocache. The screen will now change on your phone and it will use GPS to lead you to within a couple of metres of the geocache location. After that it is up to you to find it, usually in the vegetation.

What do you do when you’ve found it?

The geocache could be anything from a small magnetic box on the back of a sign, to a large Tupperware container, from a fake branch to a dummy snail shell.

Regardless of size, inside you will find a sheet of paper that you can sign to log your visit.

Logging your finds.

As well as signing the small sheet at the cache you can also log your find on the app, or on the geocaching website. This way you can track which caches you have visited, locally or overseas.

What are trackables?

Occasionally, when searching out caches you will find a trackable item in the box. These trackable items are tokens that carry a unique identifier. Your task with these is to remove the trackable from the cache, log that you have it on the website (using the unique id) and move it to another cache.

As the trackable has a unique identifier you can look up its ‘journey’ and see how many miles it has travelled around the world.

You can download the geocaching app from your App Store on your smart phone and there is a stack of information available on the geocaching website at www. geocaching.com

New Fines for Litter Louts – Particularly those who Car Share!

IF there’s one thing that makes most of us tut with disdain it must be watching someone deliberately drop litter or throw rubbish from a car.

The independent environmental charity, “Keep Britain Tidy”, estimates that more than thirty million tons of litter are collected from streets in England every year - that’s enough to fill four Wembley stadiums!

The charity has found that, whilst 62% of people dropped litter, just 28% admitted having done so.

Almost six in ten people said they considered litter to be a problem, and local authorities spend an estimated £1 billion a year clearing up the mess.

However, new plans to clean up on litter louts are currently under discussion which will see fines for people caught dropping rubbish in public places doubled to £150.

At the moment, fines for littering are set locally by councils and range from £50 to £80, with a default level £75, if the 12:15 council does not specifically set its 1 of 03/02/2017 own amount.

Fines for littering from a vehicle could also be increased from £75 to £125 in England under a new strategy being drawn up by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

It would then be down to the driver to either admit to the offence and pay the prescribed fine, challenge it in court, or nominate the passenger who was actually at fault.

The competition, established sixteen years ago, was set up to encourage young people to take an interest in art.

This year the competition was opened up to children in both Key Stage One and Key Stage Two, with entries invited from schools in and around the Deepings area. All the submitted artwork was displayed at the Tesco store in Market Deeping.

A panel of three independent judges had the difficult task of selecting the winners from a total entry of ninety pieces of work.

A prize of £50 was awarded to each of the individual winners, with £25 going to the runners-up and £15 for the third placed entries. The winning school received £50.

The prizes were presented by the Mayor of Market Deeping, Councillor Wayne Lester, and the Rotary Club President, Carl Midgley, with Tesco providing chocolate goodies for all the prizewinners.

The wolf that lives with us

L

ambing time is now coming to an end .It is lovely to see them in the fields around us. It’s always an uplifting sight and part of the joy of spring.

Unfortunately, there has also been an increase in the number of dog attacks on sheep in recent years .This has terrible consequences for both the sheep and, possibly, the dogs and owners.

I had first-hand experience of this several years ago. I was called out by the RSPCA to a long, thin field, along the edge of the River Glen near Spalding. When I entered the field, I could see a group of sheep huddled together right

at one end. As I began to walk along the field, I could see bodies of sheep littered around the field .There were also many bodies floating in the river where sheep had jumped in to escape, but had drowned due to their heavy fleeces.

The injuries were severe. Some of these poor creatures were still alive and had to be put to sleep. One I particularly remember was a lamb with half its face missing. As I came to the far end of the field, I found two dogs laying, resting on the ground .They were pleased to see me and happily allowed me to attach them to a lead .As far as they were concerned, they had had a great time.

It is not the dog’s fault when these situations occur. We must always remember that there is a bit of wolf in all our dogs. It should come as no surprise that most of our much-loved and friendly pets would chase sheep and even attack them, if given the chance. It goes without saying that dogs must be kept under control near sheep .However, many of these attacks are carried out by dogs that have escaped from their gardens, while their owners are out. It is very important that your dogs must be kept in a secure environment.

Farmers are allowed to shoot dogs who are worrying sheep. Also, if a dog is seen attacking sheep, the owner will be eligible for a fine of up to £2,000, and the dog will be taken away and put to sleep.

THIS IS NOT THE DOG’S FAULT. The dog is only following an instinct. Many people do not believe that their dogs are capable of such a thing, but many of them are. It is up to us, as owners, to take care and protect our pets from these situations. It does not just apply to sheep.

Over the years, I have seen distraught owners when their much-loved dog has attacked chickens or pet rabbits or killed a muntjac deer, while running in the woods. We have also heard of those horrible cases where babies are attacked. All these things are our responsibility and we must understand “the wolf that lives with us”.

In the Hot Seat

IN THE HOT SEAT Martin Gadd started the Deeping Shotokan Karate Club at the Deepings Leisure Centre in 2006 with the help of his wife Karen who is also a black belt. Today he is a 4th Dan black belt (Yondan) in Shotokan karate … and the club is still growing.

Where were you born and how long have you lived in the area?

I was born in Southend in Essex. I moved to Cambridgeshire in 1988 and then to Bourne in 1995. I finally moved to the Deepings in 2007.

What started your interest in karate?

I started karate in 1986 when I was still living in Southend. I was at a gym when I heard some shouts coming from one of the studios. I looked through the door and saw a karate lesson in full swing. It looked interesting so I joined the next beginners’ class and I have been training ever since.

Teaching karate is not my full-time job, but it is a lot more than a hobby. It has been a part of my life for so long now that I could not imagine being away from it for any length of time.

When you aren’t teaching, what else do you love to do? How do you relax?

Running the club takes up a lot of time especially as it is now expanding (we have just started teaching lessons on a Saturday, as well as during the week). I must keep training as well and often travel around the country to courses run by other instructors. To relax, I enjoy reading and listening to most types of music.

Why do you believe karate is so important?

Karate is best known as a method of self-defence but I believe that it offers much more. For younger children, it can help develop physical skills such as co-ordination and balance. They learn to listen and concentrate.

Older children learn that progress requires work and practice – students have to earn their belts. If a student is unsuccessful in a grading, they develop a determination

to not give up – this is an important life lesson, as we don’t always get what we would like! Becoming proficient in karate can also help a shy or introverted student to increase their confidence without becoming arrogant or big-headed.

For adults, karate can be a fascinating challenge, as well as a great way to keep fit and relieve stress.

My children are all grown up and are living in different parts of the country so unfortunately, I won’t see them on Father’s Day. A few years ago, my youngest daughter was doing voluntary work overseas during her gap year.

The Driving Column - Changes to the Test

W

elcome everyone and congratulations to those learner drivers who passed their driving tests in May and I wish you a long and safe driving future.

The Driving Test The two-part theory test continues to be a challenge to learner drivers. The selection of multiple-choice questions and the hazard perception test both demonstrate integral understanding of not only driving, but also the various laws and regulations. The two sections are taken in the same sitting and both require passes to ensure an overall theory test pass.

I can offer expert advice and guidance for those attempting to take this test in preparation for the next challenge of passing the practical driving test.

A few weeks ago, the more eagle-eyed amongst you may have seen news articles on the revised practical test which is being launched on December 4th 2017.

The test has evolved to keep pace with current driving styles and behaviours, alongside the rise in

technological improvements in motor vehicles and driving aids.

There are various amendments to the manoeuvres which the learner will be expected to demonstrate, alongside an increase in time spent on the independent driving section of the test from ten to twenty minutes. This may now incorporate the use of a sat nav, (which is supplied by myself in lessons and the examiner during the test) to allow the pupil to follow a pre-programmed route.

Initially, I had many pupils showing concerns as to how this would affect them, but please rest assured that I will tailor my lesson plans to ensure the full criteria are covered. For more details on the practical test, just ask, or visit the www.gov.uk website and search for driving test changes.

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Custody - What’s all that about then?

A

s I write this, I am sat in custody. No, I haven’t been arrested! I now have a new role as a custody sergeant, covering when required.

Currently it is 3am on a midweek night and there are three prisoners in the cells fast asleep. Two are here for conspiracy to supply drugs and the third for assault.

Before I completed my training in March, I have to say I didn’t want this role. The thought of being enclosed in the custody suite for a full shift didn’t fill me with excitement. Coupled with that is the huge responsibility of looking after the prisoners, dealing with the investigators, solicitors, interpreters, medics and the myriad of other visitors to custody, all the while complying with the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) which governs how we deal with prisoners. I was filled with dread and trepidation.

I completed the course and have now spent several shifts in custody and can say that my mindset has changed. Whilst there is much to think about and consider, everything we do is either written in policy or within PACE itself. This makes it quite

straightforward in deciding on our actions in most situations. It has also shown me how central the role of custody is in policing and making decisions which affect many people, including the suspect and victim.

The decision on what happens once the prisoner has been dealt with is down to the custody sergeant who assesses all the available evidence. The prisoner is then released with a sanction, (for example charged, cautioned or a penalty notice) or released with no further action. If there is a possibility of gathering further evidence, the prisoner can be ‘released under investigation’ or, in certain cases, on bail.

The custody sergeant runs the suite and is ultimately responsible for anything that happens. Everything that takes place is recorded, from the prisoner arriving and given a cup of tea, to being charged and released.

This is all recorded and retained on either the custody record for each prisoner or on the extensive CCTV system, which also records sound, in every suite.

This means that if something does go wrong, or there is a complaint, the written, visual and audio records can be retrieved easily so a full investigation can take place.
