Here we are again – summer around the corner, lawns trimmed, barbecues brushed down … and teenagers mumbling and stumbling from one extra revision class to the next, nervously counting down the days before the exam onslaught begins. Let us all, (especially parents of these chilled youngsters who are about to morph into something so challenging and unpredictable, almost overnight), just remember that we’ve all come through, relatively unscathed … and so can they. Let’s just keep providing the calm harbour, from which they are soon to set sail, wherever their future may take them.

In the meantime, let them take a break from revision, and share with you the varied range of top tips and interesting advice and features bursting out of the pages in your hands!

Our Events section is, as ever, your first port of call for that special event to attend. Then, perhaps you could be tempted by one of our many superb local eateries who we’ve included this month.

Finally, talking of bank hoIidays, I must admit some interest was created upon hearing of the Labour party’s proposal to increase by 50% the amount of bank holidays to come our way, if / when they assume power after June 8th. Could this possibly be the master-stroke to confirm the most curious and unpredictable treble of recent years – Brexit, Trump and Corbyn?

Residents at Rose Lodge Prepare their Competition Entries Residents at nursing and care homes across the Country Court Care Group are donning their gardening gloves and getting together to participate in ‘Country Court Care in Bloom,’ a company-wide gardening competition. Homes across the Group, including the Rose Lodge Care Home in Market Deeping, have been busy planning, visiting garden centres, planting and potting! The competition is fierce, with lots of creative schemes underway. Relatives, friends and members of the community have been enlisted to help dig, plant, donate equipment or lend their gardening expertise.

Residents at Rose Lodge have been planting up pots for their patio and enjoying getting out and about around Market Deeping in the spring sunshine.

“We are planning a few vegetables and tomato plants too, later in the season,” explained Rose Lodge’s Wellbeing and Activities Coordinator, Cally.

“Our residents love gardening and Country Court Care in Bloom has brought out our competitive side, with residents’ relatives helping out too!” she continued.

Acupuncture Needles - No Pain: Plenty to Gain!

T

raditional acupuncture forms a part of traditional Chinese medicine, where the basis of diagnosis and treatment is that the mind and body should be in perfect balance. This ancient system of healing has developed over 2,500 years, having originated in China and other Far Eastern cultures. It is a gentle and effective treatment that focuses on helping the whole person, aiming to improve their entire health and wellbeing. Today, it is widely used and accepted all over the world and 25% of the world’s population have acupuncture on a regular basis.

One of the most popular myths surrounding acupuncture is the size of the needles used in the treatment. In fact, research shows that 21% of the British public think an acupuncturist’s needle is as large as that used in an injection. The reality, though, is that acupuncture needles are actually the same width as a human hair, and some are just 0.13mm in length.

Most people might feel a slight tingling sensation when the needles are used, but this certainly does not feel like the pain associated with an injection.

Acupuncture is also considered suitable for people of all ages, including babies, children and the elderly. It can be very effective and is often integrated with conventional medicine.

The treatment is widely considered to be beneficial for a range of symptoms resulting from illness, from clearly defined complaints, or to improve general feelings of wellbeing and help with relaxation.

If you are having acupuncture, make sure the practitioner is a full member of the British Acupuncture Council. They will have degree level qualifications and must adhere to codes of safe practice and professional conduct, in order to be registered and insured by the British Acupuncture Council. The Council guarantees excellence in training, safe practice and professional conduct.

Empire - Not simply a gym? - by Steve Weston

I

t has taken almost three years to find our place in the local fitness community but people are beginning to understand what Empire Gym stands for and realise the services we offer to the local community. First and foremost of course, we are a gym but, unlike the mainstream, our facilities are designed to be of value to the community as a whole to ensure that every member, regardless of age or physical ability, is welcomed and enjoys a unique user experience.

Almost 4,000 individuals so far have benefitted from the use of our facilities and membership continues to grow through user recommendation, (the best form of marketing). It is thanks to the range and quality of our equipment, the excellent changing and showering facilities, (which include access for the infirm and wheelchair users) and the quality and dedication of our instructors, personal trainers and reception staff, that we have attracted the full spectrum of fitness enthusiasts, from the everyday fitness enthusiast to the elite athlete.

Since opening our doors in July 2014 we have pro-actively supported the local community by providing fitness and activity sessions for those in the care of the local charities, Sense and Heritage Care. We regularly support

local fundraisers and offer concession memberships to those over 60 years of age and those working in the uniformed services i.e. The Armed Forces, The Police Force, The Fire Service, The National Health Service and Her Majesty’s Prison Service.

We have worked pro-actively with our members to successfully overcome personal health issues and have assisted in rehabilitation after heart surgery. In addition, many other victims of stroke, heart disease, diabetes, prostate and other cancers have benefited from the knowledge and abilities of our in-house instructors and personal trainers.

our community responsibilities very seriously.

Common Eye conditions Three of the most common eye conditions that optometrists deal with are long sightedness, short sightedness and astigmatism, but what are they?

Astigmatism Astigmatism is the name for when the cornea is shaped more like a rugby ball in comparison to its usual football shape structure. This causes light rays to focus on different points at the back of the eye rather than one. Some people may not realise they have astigmatism at all, while others may notice slightly blurred vision.

Children are less likely to notice changes in their vision than adults and may not complain about blurred vision. However, signs of astigmatism may be that a child has learning difficulties in literacy and numeracy, drawing or even writing on lines.

Hyperopia - long sightedness Long sightedness is caused if your eyeball is too short and the image of an object forms behind the retina. Close objects will appear blurred or fuzzy while distant objects don’t need as much focussing power, meaning that they focus on your retina properly. Headaches, tired eyes, intermittent squinting and eye strain are signs of long sightedness.

The sign of long sightedness in children is a squint. This is where one eye points more inwards than the other. If this isn’t treated at any early age it can lead to permanent vision problems later in life.

Myopia - short sightedness Short sightedness is caused if your eyeball is too long. Someone who is myopic has difficulty seeing things far away because the image is formed in front of the retina.

However, they see well close-up. The more a person is myopic, the closer they need to get to an object to see it clearly.

This means that light from distant objects focus in front of the retina, causing them to appear fuzzy or blurred. Close up objects will stay in focus.

Similar to long sightedness, signs of the condition in children are linked closely to squints and your children frowning while watching TV. 10

’ve done my fair share of travelling, but I still think you can’t beat England when the weather is right … but it is so unpredictable. An unexpected, unseasonal bout of warm weather can see us squeezing into our shorts and exposing our “milk bottle legs” for a week or two, only to have them wrapped back up in woolly tights and baggy sweaters a day or so later.

For many of us, our first outing of last year’s summer wardrobe can be a bit daunting. Those few pounds of extra winter padding, exposed against a paler skin, can leave a lot to be desired. Colours that suit us in the sunshine don’t always look as appealing after the dark winter nights. So, how do you minimise the damage, and make the most of the sunshine when it arrives, without buying a new wardrobe and burning yourself to a frazzle in the short window you have to enjoy the sunshine?

Firstly, try to resist the temptation of shopping for the next size up. An uncomfortable waistband is a great reminder not to over-indulge at the barbecues. Root out a nice loose top to cover the bulges, whilst you drink

plenty of water, get more active and eat fresh, healthy summer foods.

IN THE HOT SEAT Deeping man, Paul Brice, was born and bred in Peterborough but is known far and wide for his DJ skills which have seen him perform alongside some of his heroes. Later this year will see Paul marry his beautiful and supportive girlfriend of fourteen years, Christina. Together, they have two cheeky boys, Toby (8) and Dexter (2) and Techno the cat.

How is it that you started listening to underground music, and what got you into DJing?

I had an older sibling who was into hardcore and rave music in the 90s and I used to go into his room when he was out and go through his collection! I instantly fell in love with the speed and power of dance music.

After a while I started going to the big clubs throughout the U.K. It was at that time 15 years ago I started my printing apprenticeship and was working with a guy who ran a record shop. He was selling an old set of decks which I bought, then locked myself away and practised, practised, practised mixing, before finally landing my first gig in Peterborough at a Hard Dance night called Atomic. Here I developed a love of trance, after finding the melodies and emotion to be superior to anything else I’d heard! I attended big events like Gatecrasher, Godskitchen, Passion, nights at Ministry of Sound and all the big festivals. I loved it all; the clubbers, the music, the DJs, the obsession that all these like-minded people had was amazing, and I’ve been hooked ever since!

I’ve been resident at many brands over the years, but currently reside at Trancecoda in Birmingham; it’s a bimonthly event that attracts thousands of clubbers from across Europe!

How would you describe trance music?

“Classical music with a solid kick drum.”

People say they hate all that “boom boom” music, but strip it back and it’s raw emotion, chord progressions and just a great uplifting happy vibe!

What is it about this genre that you love?

The big family feel and a passionate loyal following. No other genres give me goose bumps the way trance does. Many people know trance for the classic 90s sound, but it’s so much more now, better produced 16

than ever and with sold-out trance events throughout the world. I don’t think the scene has ever been stronger, with new events and brands popping up, or the out of retirement guys coming back in!

What is the biggest highlight of your DJ career to date?

Playing Main stage at a big outdoor festival a few years ago. It was such a buzz to DJ on the same set up as my heroes out in the sun. Roll on July when I get to do it again!

How have you managed to grow your DJ career alongside working a full time job AND raising a family?

It’s been very tricky, but shift work has its pros and cons.

Christina is very supportive which helps!

I’ve had a few years out along the way when the boys were born, but I now find myself completely sucked back again when an opportunity arises. I’m normally in my studio DJing or producing whenever I have any spare time and I do monthly online radio-shows and Facebook live sets as a promotional tool before events; it’s hard fitting it all in, but I absolutely love it.

What advice would you give to any wannabe DJs out there?

Stay loyal and true to the sound you love and don’t follow fads; build a following and try to network with clubbers and promoters as much as possible.

What’s next for DJ Bricey?

I’ve got a few tracks/mash-ups floating around that are gathering support and have had lots of radio plays and plenty more gigs in the pipeline for 2017. Alan’s Ambitious and Awesome Activity for Air Ambulance Assistance Alan Bradshaw from Deeping St. James was staggered to discover that every time the air ambulance sets off on a mission, it costs approximately £2,100. An average of three “shouts” a day, throughout the whole year, and a mindboggling £2.1 million is needed to keep those blades rotating, and sourced almost entirely from voluntary contributions.

So this keen walker, veteran of several long-distance challenges already, is preparing himself for one of the most notorious of Britain’s long-distance walks, the 268 miles Pennine Way, from Edale in Derbyshire to Kirk Yetholm on the Scottish borders. Hopefully, his selfless and gruelling eighteen days’ solo mission will raise some

Bourne Wood: A Portrayal of a Wood in Kesteven The Friends of Bourne Wood (‘the Friends’) have recently published a full colour booklet on the history, wildlife and forestry management of Bourne Wood.

Bourne Wood, a large ancient woodland in south Lincolnshire, is much used and valued by the local community in Bourne The booklet was written by Richard Jefferson, the Chairman of the Friends, with assistance from a selection of other contributors. The Forestry Commission, who own Bourne Wood, paid for the design and printing.

The booklet is attractively

produced and includes many colour photographs of the landscape and wildlife, taken by local photographers. For visitors, it gives clear detail on parking, footpaths and facilities and includes everything you need to know for an exciting day out in the wild!

Sarah Roberts, Secretary of the Friends, said, “It is great to have a booklet dedicated to Bourne Wood, showcasing all the wonderful flora and fauna we have, and paying tribute to such a well-loved and much used resource by the people of Bourne and surrounding area.”

Richard Jefferson said, “Since I became involved with the Friends, I had in mind that a booklet bringing together all that was known about the Wood might be of value to local community users and visitors from further afield. Deepings Swimming Club Cross-Channel Challenge Tops £12,000 Deepings Swimming Club has raised more than £12,000, after completing a sponsored CrossChannel swimming challenge on April 2nd.

The money from the challenge, which took place at Deepings Leisure Centre, will enable the club to buy a new electronic timing board. The board is essential to hosting its Rob Welbourn Open Meet and local swimming galas, which are a vital source of Club revenue.

More than one hundred swimmers, aged from eight to sixty, took part in the challenge, completing a distance equivalent to crossing the English Channel and back, (or 2,832 lengths of the 25-metre pool), in just over two hours.

The challenge was started by former Deepings swimmer and two-time Paralympic gold medallist, Rob Welbourn, while the final length was swum by Alex Thurston, a teaching fellow in sport at Nottingham University and “Life Member” of the Deepings Swimming Club. Alex was also part of a Nottingham Masters team which achieved a new world mark in the 120+ years age group, MAY 2017

The evening, which was arranged by committee member Steve Tappern, included a raffle and cake sale and a special appearance by club mascot ‘Sydney the Seahorse’. The viewing gallery was packed with parents cheering on the swimmers, helping to create a memorable evening for the club.

The money taken on the night was added to the sponsorship raised by the swimmers, company match-funding and Crowdfunding donations, and reached an impressive £12,115, exceeding the Club’s original target by more than £2,000.

Lynn Chapman, Deepings Swimming Club head coach, said: “We had a wonderful evening and the swimmers did a magnificent job raising the money. They should be very proud of their efforts.”

celebrated its fortieth anniversary last year and had one of its most successful seasons, with 18-year-old swimmer Alex Wray representing the GB Team at the European Junior Championships in Hungary. Alex also starred at this year’s Lincolnshire County Championships, heading a Deepings team which took home one of its biggest ever medal hauls, with twelve golds, twentythree silver and twenty bronze medals.

Club chairman Martyn Reynolds is looking forward to a strong 2017, with several swimmers expected to quality for the British Summer National Championships.

He said: “Deepings Swimming Club prides itself on being a competitive swimming club, providing a happy and friendly environment for swimmers to develop and achieve their swimming goals.

The new timing board will help us to continue developing our young swimmers. My thanks go to everyone who helped us put on the Cross-Channel challenge, including the swimmers themselves and their parents, whose support helps us to achieve great things at the Club.”

Child-friendly Cafes in and around the Deepings

When you find yourself at home for days on end with young children, it’s nice to have something to look forward to, to get out of the house and meet up with friends. In my nearly nine years of being a “work-athome-mum” I have enjoyed many a catch-up with friends in and around the Deepings. We are very lucky to have some lovely child-friendly cafes so close by.

Lilli’s Tea Room and Cakery Lilli’s is perhaps the prettiest tea room in town and you are always greeted with a warm smile and the aroma of freshly baked cakes.

Situated in Market Gate, just off the High Street, you can eat inside or out, depending on the weather. They have high chairs for small guests and a play table in the corner with toys and books to keep little ones entertained. Want a tip? Go for the chocolate brownie, warmed with cream - it’s ridiculously good. My little ones love the shortbread biscuits and milkshakes too.

The Noshery Co. at Springfields Garden Centre, Spalding Last year, the Garden Centre had a big facelift and part of that facelift included the newly named The Noshery Co. The entrance to the rear car park was moved, making way for a lovely soft play area, tucked away behind the kitchen and overlooked by comfy sofas. Suitable for children from crawling to around four years of age, this is the perfect meeting place for parents with children or grandparents taking children out for the day. You can buy hot meals, snacks or just cakes and they do a children’s food box too.

They serve hot food, snacks and children’s lunchboxes and a lovely range of cakes and hot drinks. This is also a great place to host a child’s birthday party. Bacon-Wrapped Asparagus

A simple, tasty dish that makes the most of this locally grown produce.

Method 1 Wash asparagus and pat dry.

Trim off the woody stem – usually the bottom 2 inches.

2 Toss the asparagus in olive oil.

3 Slice strips of bacon down the centre so you have two long, thin pieces.

4 Wrap the bacon around each asparagus stem and place on a foil lined baking sheet.

5 Season with salt and pepper.

Place in middle shelf of the oven, then turn it on to 200˚C or Gas 6. The bacon wrapped asparagus should be in the oven during the preheat phase.

Install a wireless mesh network for improved Wi-Fi coverage at home or in the office by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC

M

esh wi-fi is beginning to take off with many of the networking companies releasing new mesh networks (802.11s). This method of networking relies on multiple wireless devices being used together in a grid, or mesh, coverage pattern to provide reliable and high performance wireless networks. This can be of benefit where the home, or office, suffers from poor wireless zones due to distance or environment.

By linking the matched devices in a mesh network, wireless signals can reach to those dim and dark wireless corners of the home.

Most of the main network device manufacturers have released their own versions including this new one from BT called BT Whole Home Wi-Fi, retailing at around £300. For many homes, this level of coverage will be unnecessary but for those living in larger homes, or older homes with thick, solid walls, mesh technology could be a good direction to take

to address Wi-Fi coverage around the house (or office).

The ‘first’ device connects to the main router, and then an app

(Android or iOS) is used to help set up the two ‘sister’ devices to map out your mesh network.

Everything is handled in a userfriendly manner.

Current tests show that these networks are easier to configure than a home plug adapter network, more reliable and offer better across device performance. Apart from providing a reliable Wi-Fi network, many of the devices also provide a wired connection (handy for connecting static PCs, TVs, set top boxes and such like).

Do I Have to Use the Property Lawyer My Estate Agent is Recommending?

This is something I hear on a daily basis, and the quick answer is ‘no’.

When your estate agent recommends a conveyancing solicitor, licensed conveyancer or property lawyer, it is likely the firm they are recommending are paying them a “referral fee”.

This fee, which can be in the hundreds of pounds, is usually passed on to you, the client.

Read the small print before you sign any agreements! Every law firm should detail how much they receive from the estate agent for passing business to them. The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC) have a strict referral code.

Solicitors and licensed conveyancers are required to set out a full quotation which details their fees, the disbursement costs and associated expenses with your transaction. They are also required to reveal how much they paid for your referral, and I suggest you ask them for details of the referral fee they have paid for your (potential) custom.

In addition to checking the amount of money you, the client, are paying for your referred business,

I strongly recommend that you get at least three quotes for your conveyancing. Fees for leasehold and freeholds within different valuation brackets can vary widely. Also search for reviews of the firms you are interested in working with.

In summary, when buying or selling a property it is vital that you appoint a lawyer that you can trust to act in your best interests; one who will have the experience to complete the transaction properly and in a timely manner, and who will charge you a fair price.

Everyone has the right to choose their own lawyer.

Both the SRA and the CLC rigorously state that its members are meant to ensure that their client has chosen them to act without pressure being exerted upon them to do so.

If you are being pressurised into choosing a lawyer as outlined above, refuse firmly and advise that you will seek the advice of the SRA or CLC – this usually does the trick!

The Potting Shed

A

pril was a busy month down at the allotment, planting potatoes, preparing the bean trench and seed beds and planting out a few seeds; now it’s a battle against the weeds! As soon as the weather warms up and seeds begin to germinate, the weeds seem to take over, so be vigilant and weed regularly; you don’t want the nutrients and moisture being taken away from your crops.

May is a difficult month to judge as the weather can vary. We sometimes get lulled into a false sense of security and think that summer has arrived but watch the weather in case of late frosts and protect any tender seedlings. Also take care to harden off plants that have been grown indoors or under cover before planting. A cheap way to protect tender young plants is to use “bottle cloches”. Cut down the 2 litre plastic drinks bottles, as they are useful for protecting young runner beans and peas.

This month sees more pests appearing and sampling your crops before you have chance to! A couple of ideas for repelling the varmints:● Peppermint, spearmint and pennyroyal naturally deter aphids and ants, so plant (or put them in pots) throughout the vegetable plot. ● Plant flowers that attract the pest predators such as marigolds and nasturtiums.

● There are numerous vegetables that can be planted out this month but try not to plant everything at once. Try “succession sowing”, a small batch of seeds every two or three weeks and you should have a steady supply, rather than a glut: it will also help to maximise your chances of successful germination.

Remember to keep earthing up potatoes, cover carrot sowing with netting to prevent carrot fly and, if in any doubt about the weather, cover young plants with fleece. ● It is possible to grow two crops planted at the same time in the same row or bed, one fast and one slow growing, (intersowing) so that you get the most out of your plot.

Fast growing crops include Oriental salad leaves, lettuces, radishes, spring onions, spinach and spring-planted shallots.

Slow growers are parsnips, sweetcorn, tomatoes, leeks, winter cabbage, cauliflower, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts.

You can also sow the fast growers when there is a gap between harvesting one crop and planting another. ● Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous for me to list but a few include: carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas. Any seeds that were sown earlier will need thinning out: doing this when they are quite small lessens the disturbance to the surrounding plants. ● Sow indoors: chillies, peppers, courgettes, pumpkins and winter squashes, runner beans and sprouting broccoli.

Average Funeral Costs in the UK Rise Again

A

ccording to Sun Life’s latest research, the average cost of dying is now £8,802.

This represents a rise of more than sixteen times the rate of inflation. The average cost of a funeral now stands at £3,897, up over 5% since the 2015 “Cost of Dying Survey”.

So, with the funeral making up almost half of the cost, how can you make sure that your family can afford to give you the send-off that you deserve?

Pre-paid plans are suitable for a huge range of people. They are very popular amongst the elderly, but increasingly people in their 50s and 60s are seeing them as a viable option. The range of providers is growing, as is the range of costs. But, if you need some advice or want to put a plan in place, give us a call at Will and Probate Services and we will point you in the right direction.

One answer is to pay now. Pre-paid funeral plans are getting more and more popular. The Co-op is reporting a growth of 25% in pre-paid funeral plan sales in 2015.

The rest of the costs fall into what some people have called the “Widow’s Admin”, dealing with the aftermath of the death. Some are direct costs, probate fees and statutory requirements. Some are optional, such as the costs of employing a solicitor to deal with the estate.

A pre-paid plan will secure your funeral at today’s price, no matter when you die in the future. This means that you can avoid the ever-increasing costs of your final journey.

You can pay in a lump sum or in monthly instalments, with some providers offering the opportunity to pay over ten years.

Inheritance Tax Changes - What’s That All About Then?

F

rom April 6th 2017, the new Inheritance Tax residence nil-rate band has begun to be phased in. These changes mean that individuals could be able to claim an additional £100,000 to offset against the sale of a family home after a death. The residence nil-rate band, or the family home allowance, as it is sometimes being called, will rise to £175,000 by 2020, meaning that an individual will be able to give away £500,000 tax-free in total.

The allowances are transferable between partners, meaning that a couple could eventually have an Inheritance Tax allowance of up to £1 million.

As expected, there are strict and complex rules that have to be followed to enable your estate to qualify for the residence nil-rate band. For example, your property must be left to a direct descendant, such as a child or grandchild, meaning that those planning to leave their estate to nephews, nieces or other beneficiaries, will not qualify for the relief.

Also, the new rules mean that individuals who downsize, or sell their home to fund care, do not miss out. In this situation, individuals get an “inheritance tax credit”, which means they get the tax break equivalent to the value of their original home. However, strict rules apply again, and both the lower-value property they moved to, if downsizing, and any remaining proceeds from the sale of the house, must go to direct descendants.

Your will should be regularly reviewed, to ensure that it is up-todate and reflecting your wishes.

Attic Story - Interior Designer, Yasmin Chopin There’s a lot to consider if you fancy extending your home into the loft. At first glance, it might seem an impossible task - all those rafters and beams cluttering up the space.

Of course, your roof wasn’t designed for living in so your attic isn’t going to be light and airy, spacious and comfortable. Instead, it’s probably draughty, cramped, dark, and a tad creepy. But, if your family is expanding and you need another bedroom, or if you work from home and yearn for a calm and peaceful workspace, ‘going up’ is an excellent way to achieve it. Your investment could be more than repaid by increasing the value of your property.

I was asked for my top tip on loft conversions by a specialist roofing company, in preparation for an article they were writing. There’s so much to consider that I took the time to think about my absolute best piece of advice. This is what I said: “No matter how large or small the space you’ve scrounged from your loft, you really must give consideration to the access. Make sure your loft staircase is wide and ensure it either completely contrasts in style and design with your house stairs, or that it matches perfectly. I’ve seen too many loft conversions where the stairs have been built, but no thought has been given to their design. They transport you to an exciting place…. let them tell the story.”

Period properties with several floors expressed status through the architecture and design of their staircases. To impress visitors, the most money would be spent on the ground floor and first floors while the bottom and the top, the cellar steps and attic staircase, would be made in a utilitarian fashion. After all, it was only the servants who would be using them! Times have changed - don’t let your loft staircase let you down!

Another piece of advice I would give is this: When drawing up the design with your architect or builder, make sure you consult an interior designer before you approve the plans. Your newly acquired space will be quirky and will require clever ideas to make the best use of it. Make sure it delivers what you are hoping for. Can you envisage how you will use it? What headroom will you have to move around? Will the windows deliver too much or too little light? What will it look like during the daytime - and at night? Where will you put the furniture?

Will it offer stylish storage solutions? How are you going to decorate it? A list that goes on and on... make sure you are clear on all of your questions before you go ahead for planning approval!

Words from the Mayor Councillor Wayne Lester

Yet another busy month representing the town, both at home and also in the county. My good wife and I attended several Civic functions, in Grantham, Gainsborough and Spalding. Closer to home, in Market Deeping, I was asked to open and do a bit of judging for the Deepings Camera Club at their Annual Exhibition on April 8th.

There were loads of great pictures for all tastes, and well done to the organisers and the photographers who took part.

Council News Would you like to be part of the working group planning for the Christmas Market?

If so, or if you have any suggestions to enhance the event, please contact our Town Clerk.

Grass cutting of L.C.C. verges. We have been informed by L.C.C. & S.K.D.C. that Glendale will continue to cut the grass on behalf of S.K.D.C. for this forthcoming season, due to contractual obligations.

Any complaints for this forthcoming season should be directed at S.K.D.C. or L.C.C. Market Deeping Town Council, in partnership with Deeping St. James Parish Council, will then assume responsibility from April/May 2018. The monies received for this season’s cutting will be ring-fenced and used to fund next year’s cutting.

Footpath No. 4 (to the side of Tesco, leading to the new housing site). We are currently seeking to engage legal advice on the issues surrounding the realignment of this footpath. We will keep you informed on our progress.

I was also part of a team of thirtystrong volunteers that swept up through the Deepings the next day, taking part in the “Great British Spring Clean”. You would be amazed at what you can find picking up others’ litter and, on that note, I would like to call upon all business owners in the town to “do your bit” outside your own business premises.

O

n February 23rd, when “Storm Doris” was heading our way, we went to feed our horses early, so we could avoid much of the bad weather. While we were out, my son, who was at home, rang to say there was something wrong with our chihuahua dog, Phoebe. He said one of her eyes was twice its normal size and very red.

We raced back home, hoping that my son was exaggerating, and that this was just a sore eye and not what I feared it might be. When I got home, I could see immediately that she had prolapsed her eye (the eye had come out of its socket) and that she had been rubbing at it. This can happen in this breed with a bang to the head, whilst she had been playing with one of our other dogs.

My experience here is relatively minor, in that the outcome is that we now have a one-eyed dog, but one who can still live her life quite normally.

This was a difficult experience for me in that it combined the stresses involved in dealing with an emergency, with the trauma of seeing my own pet injured, a situation I am hoping never to have to repeat.

We took her to our surgery in Bourne where I immediately gave her an anaesthetic and assessed her eye. It is normally possible to replace the eye, if there is immediate surgical intervention. Sometimes to achieve this, you have to take some fluid out of the eye and collapse it temporarily to help replace it. I was unable to do this, however, as she had bled into the eye, so I had to make the decision to remove it. Her anaesthetic was unstable during this whole process.

As vets, we are often so busy just dealing with the emergency in front of us, that we either forget, or just haven’t experienced, the raw trauma involved in these situations for the owners. There is the pure horror of seeing your much-loved pet severely damaged and the fear of what will happen next.

What I also find frightening is how quickly these accidents happen and that things are never the same afterwards. Your day starts off in its normal fashion and then, suddenly, everything is so different.

ollowing the changes to retirement planning in April 2015, we have seen a significant increase in members of traditional company pension schemes, (‘Defined benefit Pensions’), asking us to obtain cash equivalent transfer values.

These pensions have always been considered “gold-plated” because they promise to pay a secure, index-linked income for life, based on final or career-average salary. This is unlike most modern employee schemes, where there is far less certainty over what will be paid in retirement.

Valuations have increased to record highs in the wake of the historic June referendum on ‘Brexit’. As bond yields have plunged, cash transfer values have typically been offered at multiples of twenty to forty times the projected annual pension.

Nationwide, many thousands have been tempted by record cash equivalent valuations, and have moved their benefits into a more personal environment. Essentially, they are foregoing the guarantees of the scheme, perhaps in order to obtain more flexible access to their benefits, which may include higher levels of tax-free cash.

History

Discovering . . . Highways and byways - Rex Needle

W

e tend to take our roads and pavements for granted without realising that those we have today are little more than a century old and that in past times using the highway could be a hazardous undertaking.

Smooth, well-drained and durable hard surfaces are a modern innovation and we only have to consult the novels of Charles Dickens for a glimpse of what they were like in Victorian times when the roads were so dirty that many lads such as the homeless boy Jo in Bleak House (1852), earned a living as crossing sweepers, always ready with a broom to clear a path over dirty, urban streets for passing ladies and gentlemen in return for a coin or two.

Most of the roads that link our towns and villages follow the paths trodden by animals and man from the earliest times but improved over the centuries according to usage and technical progress and the modern thoroughfares we have today have become a sign of a civilised society which enable traffic and pedestrians move about with ease.

Although paved roads were known in the Middle East from the earliest times, those we see today have their origins in the Highways Act of 1555 which transferred responsibility for their maintenance from central to local government and today Lincolnshire County

Council which is responsible for maintaining highways through the Deepings now has an annual spending budget in excess of £31 million (2015-16).

This progression has been slow and even a century ago roads through populated areas such as Market Deeping were well below today’s standards, often covered with a layer of mud, potholes, puddles, horse dung and other forms of refuse while the High Street became flooded whenever the nearby River Welland overflowed its banks during periods of heavy rain, the water on some occasions rising to a depth of four feet.

The introduction of stagecoach travel brought an improvement and a boost to local trade with such hostelries as the New Inn (now the Deeping Stage) on the south side of the High Street and the Bull opposite providing overnight accommodation for passengers and horses on the journey between London and York.

A further impetus in road development came with the arrival of the motor car in the early 20th century which could not cope with soft and uneven surfaces and so the introduction of tarmacadam heralded a new era of permanence without ruts or dust while improved drainage reduced the risk of flooding.

‘Now That’s What I Call Linchfield’ The next time you are lucky enough to speak to any of the children in Year 5 at Linchfield CP School, you’ll be talking to a recording superstar! ‘Now That’s What I Call Linchfield’, an album of original songs, written and performed by the children themselves, is on sale now and the buzz is growing!

In January 2017, the children arranged themselves into eleven bands of between five and seven members. Each band then proceeded to write its own original song, based on an issue facing children in today’s world. The children started the process by writing the lyrics for their songs, before composing the music using the Garageband app on ipads, and eventually recording their tracks in a professional recording studio. The finished tracks sound absolutely incredible – staggeringly professional for a group of nine and ten-year-old children.

From hip hop to dub step, from R’n’B to rock, the album boasts an eclectic mix of styles, and the songs are guaranteed to take up permanent residence in your brain!

The children decided that the profits generated from sales of the album will be donated to children’s charities, which tackle some of the issues their songs relate to. The children have chosen the NSPCC and The Children’s Trust as their nominated charities.

Motoring Advice from Mark Jolley - Safe Driving Begins Here

A

very warm welcome to you all, and I hope you had an enjoyable Easter break, possibly eating a few too many chocolate eggs, ( I know my children have had one too many!! ) The first third of the year has already passed us by and, as we move towards summer, we all hope for some fine settled weather, with improved driving conditions.

However, with May having two bank holiday weekends, alongside some sunshine (hopefully!), I would like to take this opportunity to stress the importance of some basic safety procedures that we should all follow whilst driving.

Remember those all-round observations, prior to each time we move off, always checking the two blind spots, down both sides of the vehicle which are not visible in your mirrors. Check over both left and right shoulders, out to the rear side windows. We all want to ensure we are safe to move our vehicles and not risk having an incident with anything that was in the blind spot areas.

Please remember to make constant and effective use of your mirrors, each time you change direction, no

matter how small. Check your centre rear-view mirror, then the appropriate side mirror to check it is safe to move in that particular direction. Also, as you either increase or decrease your speed, always be aware of how that will impact other road users. So remember to always check mirrors prior to a change of speed (COS) or a change of direction (COD).

Some road users are at times slightly more difficult to see, so make those mirror checks and observations effective, as we’re not only looking for cars or larger vehicles, but also for motorbikes and cyclists. These road users require the same caution to be taken by us, as drivers, to assist in making the roads around Deeping and beyond a safer place.

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Abstracting Electricity - What’s all that about then?

T

he final offence I wish to consider around the Theft Act is that of abstracting electricity. Section 13 of the Theft Act 1968 made dishonestly abstracting electricity a specific offence. This was necessary because electricity did not come within the definition of property in the Act and could not therefore be ‘stolen’.

One of the most common situations in which police will deal with this offence is when cannabis is grown in a hydroponics set-up. The heat and light needed to grow cannabis requires a large amount of electricity, which clearly would cost money. In these situations, the electricity meter is often by-passed to reduce the costs for the “would-be herbalist”.

The definition of the offence is relatively simple and says, “A person who dishonestly uses without due authority, or dishonestly causes to be wasted or diverted, any electricity commits an offence.”

Electricity does not have to be mains electricity; it could be electricity from a battery in a torch, car, etc.

A “use” implies a consumption of electricity that would not have occurred without the act of the accused.

For example, a tramp might lawfully warm himself on an electric fire that someone else has left on, but he commits the offence if he switches the fire on himself.

“Without due authority” means without proper authorisation. As well as the examples above, this could include Squatters who use electricity with no intention of paying for it.

An employee who used his employer’s electrically powered machinery to make things for his own use.

A person who takes a pedestrian controlled electric vehicle such as a milk float (as this cannot be classed as a conveyance).

The electricity does not need to be used for the benefit of any person. Wasting it without any authority out of mischief, depending on the circumstances, will make the offence complete.

The offence carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison on indictment (Crown Court).

When electricity meters are found to be by-passed, police will work closely with the utility company involved to make the supply safe initially, and then to investigate.
