Professional Ear Care and Safe Syringing

our ears are just as important as your eyes and teeth. Whilst most people will visit an optician and a dentist at least once a year and sometimes more for a check-up, the ears tend to be neglected.

Good hearing and healthy ears play an important part in your quality of life. If you have ever experienced reduced, or even lost your hearing for a short period of time, then you’ll know just how frustrating and lonely it can be. For some people, this could make them feel very vulnerable, especially if they live alone.

If you feel you have a problem with your ears, don’t just ignore it.

There are many conditions that can affect your hearing, such as ear infections or ear wax build up. Some are very straightforward to fix and generally, as with so many other things in life, the sooner you have them checked, the sooner you can get back to normal.

Ear wax is completely normal; it is produced by the ear to provide protection. Ears are actually self-cleaning and you should never attempt to remove the wax yourself. Although it can be tempting, using items such as cotton buds can actually push the wax further down the ear canal and end up totally blocking your ear.

The cotton wool tip can even damage your ear canal..... as can matches, hair grips and twigs!

To help reduce the chances of problems with your ears, you should always try and keep them dry and protected from water.

Using an ear plug when you go swimming or even showering is advisable. Wet ears can cause eczema, dermatitis, runny ears and infections. You could use cotton wool as a plug BUT ONLY if you smear it with Vaseline to ensure you do not damage the ear canal with the fibres.

If you have an ear problem, it is recommended that you see a trained, competent practitioner in ear care. They have specialist equipment that allows them to see into your ear canal with the correct lighting, and are able to provide the correct and safe treatment. For ear wax, ear syringing / irrigation, when performed by qualified practitioners, is safe and effective. Please do not try internet “do it yourself ear syringing kits”.

Effective treatment does not necessarily mean expensive treatment. At the Wellhead Practice, Jane Russell offers patients an initial assessment for £10. Your ears will be examined, and you’ll be given recommendations, ranging from general advice to suggested treatment. Ear syringing starts at £30.

Loss of Muscle Mass - a problem for us all - by Steve Weston

S

arcopenia is a disease associated with the ageing process. Loss of muscle mass and strength, which in turn affects balance, gait and overall ability to perform tasks of daily living, are hallmark signs of this disease. From birth to around the age of thirty years, our muscles grow larger and stronger but between the ages of thirty and thirty-five years we all begin to lose muscle mass and function. Physically inactive people can lose as much as 3% to 5% of their muscle mass each decade after the age of thirty and the potential rate of muscle loss accelerates as we get older.

According to the Office of National Statistics, average life expectancy is currently eighty-three years but, after the age of sixty-five, we can reasonably expect ten years of relatively good health followed by a further eight years of increasing disability, caused in many cases by a fall due to poor stability and low muscle strength.

Age UK reports that the number of fractures in the elderly population resulting from a fall currently stands at 310,000 per annum and the number is rising. If we could reduce the number of fractures, we would also reduce the number of elderly people falling into disability, thus increasing the number of years of good health following retirement.

The primary treatment for sarcopenia is exercise, specifically resistance training or strength training. These activities, coupled with good diet, can improve the condition of connective tissue to provide additional joint stability, increase muscle mass, strength and endurance and help the neuromuscular system to respond more effectively to outside stimuli, thus improving balance and reducing the potential for falling.

The proper number, intensity, and frequency of resistance exercise is important for getting the most benefit with the least risk of injury. You should work with an experienced physical therapist or trainer to develop an exercise plan.

According to Age UK, if all over-sixtyfives followed a tailored exercise programme, we would prevent seven thousand unnecessary deaths a year – nineteen a day – from hip fractures alone. Evidence shows that specific programmes for improving strength and balance can reduce the risk of falls by

as much as 55%. However, don’t think that this is a condition affecting only the aged; if we all want a healthy disabilityfree retirement, we should start thinking about undertaking regular exercise from the age of thirty years.

A sight test not only checks if your vision needs correcting with glasses or contact lenses, but can also help detect signs of underlying general health conditions, such as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. So it is a vital health check.

Who needs a regular sight test?

Everybody! Sight tests should be part of everyone’s healthcare routine, just like going to the dentist.

It is important to get your child’s eyesight tested before they are eight years old. If any eye problems are detected, then they can be treated early enough and so prevent any long-term eyesight issues.

Teenagers should also be tested, as this is a prime-time for developing myopia (near-sightedness), and uncorrected vision can impact their studies and social life.

Eventually, everyone will need some form of vision correction, as changes to your vision are part of the ageing process, and typically happen when you reach your forties. So, by having regular eye tests, any age-related conditions can be diagnosed early and managed effectively.

How often should I have a sight test?

Everyone should have a sight test every two years. However, in some circumstances, your optometrist may recommend more frequent sight tests, for example, if you: are a child wearing glasses, have diabetes,

are aged forty or over and have a family history of glaucoma,

are aged seventy or over.

What happens in a sight test?

Your optometrist will ask you about your eyesight, lifestyle and health. Then they will ask you to read a test chart through different strength lenses to ascertain the best prescription for you. They will also look at the surface of your eyes using a slit lamp, which checks for any scratches or abnormalities on your cornea, iris and lens.

Depending on your individual needs, you may be required to do a visual fields test and a tonometer test which assess your risk of developing glaucoma.

At the end of your eye test, your optometrist will explain what all the tests have shown and recommend the very best options for your individual needs.

Skydiving for Charity – Here’s How You Can Help Saturday August 5th 2017 is already pencilled into the diaries of three daring local ladies. No, it’s not a wedding, nor a dayout at a health spa, not even a birthday party. Instead, Bourne residents Claire Tupholme and Rebecca Sale, along with Sarah Machin from Deeping St James, will leap out of an aircraft at Hinton, Northamptonshire … and their tandem skydive will hopefully raise thousands of pounds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Motor neurone disease is a rare condition that affects around two in every 100,000 people in the U.K. each year, and there are about 5,000 people living with the condition in the UK at any one time. Perkins Great Eastern Run – Sunday October 8th 2017 – Time to Sign Up! This year’s event is promising to be the biggest ever, with more than 1,600 people already pre-registered for the race, which takes place around the streets of Peterborough.

Last year saw the highest turnout of runners in its history for this Peterborough City Council-organised race. A total of 4,262 runners ran the half marathon and 1,257 people took part in the Anna’s Hope 5km Fun Run. The event had the strongest-ever representation from elite runners.

country and, indeed, the world, with entries from the USA, the Netherlands, Italy and France. The wheelchair race had six entrants.

The Perkins Great Eastern Run is famed for its fast, flat course that gives runners an excellent chance of a personal best. Perkins has been the principal race sponsor since 2006.

It’s never too early to start training for the big day and, from July, runners can take advantage of the race’s free weekly training sessions that take place at the Peterborough Embankment Athletics Track.

The sessions cater for runners of all levels of fitness and experience and it’s an opportunity to meet race-day pacers who lead runners around the course at different times from start to finish.

Chocolate - Advice on Your Best Friend from Renu

f you crave chocolate, it doesn’t mean your body has a chocolate deficiency, although I think most people would prefer that!

Any cravings are an indication that you are not eating the correct things for your body’s needs. Chocolate is high in magnesium, and craving it often indicates that your body is deficient in that element.

Magnesium is found in foods such as leafy greens, figs, avocados and nuts so, whilst chocolate does contain magnesium, by eating more of these other foods, you can help suppress your cravings. Since experts estimate that at least 80% of us are deficient in magnesium, it is important to find ways to increase magnesium levels in the body, but, unfortunately, chocolate may not be a great way to do this.

Women have a natural decrease in serotonin in the brain in the week before menstruation, so this may partially explain the specific craving for chocolate during this time. The basic fact that chocolate tastes good and we enjoy eating it means that the body releases dopamine during chocolate consumption. This means that it is associated with a “feel good factor” which keeps us returning for more.

Statistically, women tend to desire chocolate much more than men, but men tend to favour cravings for foods like red meat (B12, protein) and beer (b-vitamins and yeasts).

This popular part of Portugal is blessed with 300 days of sunshine per year, turquoise seas and golden sands, on approximately 180 beaches! From golf to bird-watching, from lazing on golden beaches to eating some delicious food, there are so many things to add to your to-do list!

Forty of Portugal’s seventy golf clubs are in this region; some are world-class courses and others exclusive golf resorts, including the exceptional Vale do Lobo near Loulé. The Oceanico golf complex at Vilamoura is one of the best, with four fabulous courses: Old, Victoria, Laguna and Pinhal.

The Ria Formosa Nature Reserve wetlands stretch for 60kms along the Algarve coast and you’ll spot many species of birds, as well as the Portuguese water dog (the dogs help the fishermen catch their fish) and the galinha-sultan (sultan hen), which is only found here in Portugal. The popular Zoo Marine Park has dolphins and sea lions, and an emphasis on science and conservation. Anyone over the age of six can swim with the dolphins, too.

The Algarve’s beaches range from long sandy shorelines, bordered by promenades and cafes, to secluded sea-sculpted coves, dotted with caves and interesting rock formations and framed by golden sandstone cliffs. Explore the sculpted shapes and caves of the Algarve’s stunning coastline from the sea: take a boat trip from Albufeira’s harbour and you may even see pods of dolphins swimming alongside the boat.

Foodies will be delighted with the treats that the Algarve offers, from chicken piri-piri to arroz de lingueirão (similar to paella). It is said that the Portuguese have more than 365 recipes which feature bacalhau (salted cod) – more than one for each day of the year. Look out for this cornerstone of Portuguese cooking on restaurant menus. Try Michelin-starred dining at Vila Vita’s restaurant, Ocean, or Henrique Leis or Willie’s Restaurant. Head to Vila Joya hotel (near Praia do Gale) to sample more stunning cuisine.

Sardinhas assados (grilled sardines) are often barbecued over charcoal in a steel drum by vendors on the quayside or on the street and served on fresh, crusty bread. A simple, cheap but tasty culinary treat not to be missed! It’s best sampled during Portimão’s ten-day sardine festival in August, or the slightly smaller sardine fest at Olhas d’Agua (between Vilamora and Albufeira) also in August.

e should now be feeling the benefit of the longer days and hopefully some warm sunshine, but beware, there is always a threat of night frosts.

Although April is a lean month for fresh vegetables, it is a good month to get ahead by sowing seeds indoors or outside in cold frames and under cloches. If you covered your plot over the winter months, the soil may well be warm enough to plant and sow certain crops directly outdoors. However, if you are tempted to get sowing, it is still risky as it may be too cold for the seeds to germinate; the allotment will always catch up eventually and reward your patience with a bumper harvest. A more useful job this month is to prepare seed beds ready for sowing. If you forgot to manure in the autumn, you can still add really well-rotted manure or compost, but dig it in thoroughly.

Soil should be broken down into small even particles, stones and woody material removed, raking the soil over until you get a fine “tilth”; don’t rake when the soil is too wet. If you are sowing, remember - if the soil is dry, water the base of the drill generously before sowing; if it’s wet, sprinkle a thin layer of sand before sowing.

You can sow a number of seeds indoors; chillies, peppers, celery, courgettes and summer squashes, runner and French beans, sprouting broccoli and sweetcorn are just a few. Brassicas can be planted outdoors in nursery beds or in modules or pots. If you do grow any seedlings in trays or modules, and they have grown a couple of “true leaves”, prick

them out and move them to individual pots or larger modules.

You can also harden off young plants by putting them outdoors on sunny days, but bring them back in at night or put them in a cold frame or under cloches.

Jobs to do this month include:● Earth-up early potatoes. ● Plant second early and main crop potatoes and onion sets. ● The majority of root crops can be sown now and it is probably your last chance to sow parsnips. ● Sow the following outdoors but under cover; beetroot (if the soil is cold and wet), cucumbers, lettuces, turnips, oriental leaves and salad leaves. ● Don’t forget to regularly hand-weed or hoe around seedlings as the weeds appear, as they create a lot of competition for food and moisture. ● Make sure that fruit trees, canes and bushes are kept watered, as any fruit planted in the last 18 months is susceptible to draught damage. Adding a mulch around the base will help. ● Sow maincrop peas and make the last sowing of summer broad beans. ● Put up pea sticks and build cane supports ready for climbing beans while the ground is still soft.

Strange … but True!

This year’s “Put your Head in the Lion’s Mouth Award” goes to Mr Andrew Jackson, 48, who turned up for an interview with Greater Manchester Police and ended up being banned from driving. Whilst attending an interview for an IT management position on January 25th this year, Jackson began to answer the questions, and very soon the G.M.P. interviewer noticed the smell of alcohol on his breath. He denied he had been drinking before the interview, but said that he had shared a bottle of wine with his wife the night before.

Jackson was then breathalysed and the results showed he had been driving over the limit, on his journey to his interview. He admitted driving while above the legal drink driving limit and was disqualified from driving for a year and ordered to pay fines totalling £235.

Inspector Tony Allt, of G.M.P.’s Roads Policing Unit, said, “Although the circumstances surrounding this particular incident are unusual, this case highlights the fact that there are a number of motorists who think they are fine to drive after drinking the night before”.

Clearly, for thinking that he was one of them, Mr Jackson wins the Award … and loses his head to the hungry lion!

How to Spot Fake e-mails - A Quick Guide

E

-mail spamming and scamming is becoming a huge problem, as more and more sources try to lure you in with false e-mails and links. Anything from promising free goods to gift vouchers, pleas for help, warnings that your password has expired, or that your account has been compromised - the list goes on.

Here are a few tips for spotting these fake e-mails.

Let’s take an example of a very common one, as of today, the Amazon Voucher scam. On the face of it, and with a quick glance, it does look like an Amazon e-mail but look closer; • Many of the tell-tale signs of a scam are evident in this e-mail.

• Poor grammar.

• Personalisation in the subject line.

• A link to click on, requesting information or login.

• More poor grammar – 90% really do have multiple errors.

• A sender e-mail address that doesn’t match the company logo.

The purpose of this e-mail is to get you to click on the Complete Registration link, and you will then be prompted to enter your Amazon login details – if you do, then they’ve got you! Not only your Amazon details, but also your login and password - not good for those of you that use the same password for separate sources.

Let’s dig a little deeper. Let’s assume none of the other signs were there.

How else can we tell this is a scam?

If you are using an e-mail application, such as Windows Live Mail or Outlook, by putting your mouse cursor on the blue Complete Registration

text, the actual (real) link that this will connect you to, if clicked, pops up. As you can see in this example, this is definitely not an Amazon link. Would you intentionally connect to a link with all that rubbish in the address?

Of course not, but this is exactly what happens if you click on that link.

This also applies to e-mail scams that include an attachment. The principle is the same. Check out that attachment and never open it, unless you are 100% sure of the source and are expecting it.

Now, after sharing these tips with you, I’m going to negate all this and basically say that none of this really matters! E-mail has become such a target for scammers and criminals that my actual advice is to NEVER open a mail containing a link such as this, even if it looks perfect.

If Amazon really had a voucher for you, then by logging in to your Amazon account via your usual browser, you would see if there was any communication pending. This is true of almost any large modern organisation. Use your account logins to check the status of your accounts and communications - never rely on e-mail prompts.

The preschool serves children from the age of 2 ½ to 5 years old, in a nurturing, stimulating and family-centred environment, where the needs of children and their families are embraced and supported.

Here at Little Linchfield, we recognise individual children’s needs to learn basic academic skills, in preparation for the transition into mainstream school, whist also providing opportunities to explore the world around them, and develop their independence in a way that ensures they enjoy all of their learning experiences.

Discovering . . . Deeping water mills - Rex Needle

T

he River Welland through the Deepings has not only provided an essential trade link for cargo boats in past times but has also powered several water mills devoted to various commercial activities, mainly grinding corn.

A water mill is a building alongside a waterway which uses moving water as its power source for milling, sawing or hammering, depending on which trade is being pursued in the production of goods and materials such as flour, paper, wood and textiles.

When the Domesday Book was compiled in 1086 there were 5,624 watermills in England alone but over the next two centuries this number had risen to between 10,000 and 15,000. Their demise in recent times has been equally swift and although most have been demolished many have survived as museums or as tasteful conversions into private homes.

The Deepings had a river trade from the earliest times but this was given added impetus in the early 17th century when it was opened up from Stamford to the sea, bringing added employment and prosperity during its lifespan from 1673 until 1863 when it was probably the earliest post-Roman commercial canal in England.

There were eventually eight water mills along this stretch of waterway between Market Deeping and Stamford, namely Thorpe’s Mill (demolished circa

1935), Molecy Mill, Hudd’s Mill and King’s Mill, together with the mills at Maxey, Lolham, Tallington and West Deeping.

These mills have had chequered histories and in the winter of 1800, threatening letters were sent to the millers at Molecy and Lolham complaining about the prices being charged saying that “if you don’t [reduce your flour] next Saturday to 3s. 6d. per stone we will [pull] your mill down over your head and take your [flour] away”, although in the event the protest came to nothing after being reported to the King. Then shortly before Christmas 1880, Lolham Mill was badly damaged by fire together with large stocks of flour and corn, despite valiant attempts by villagers and the Deeping St James fire engine over a period of ten hours to bring the flames under control although a west wind helped to save the house and other adjoining buildings.

The picturesque 18th century Molecy Mill on the outskirts of Market Deeping dates from 1773 but with later alterations and is now attractively modernised as a private residence. West Deeping mill dating from the early 19th century has been similarly preserved and both Grade II listed buildings are much admired by tourists and visiting photographers.

It’s Not Just Flowers That Rise in the Spring!

ast year we saw a lot of ticks. The relatively mild winter this year will have done little to reduce the numbers for this spring .Ticks will start to rise out of the ground in the next two months, when we get the warmer weather. Now is a good time to think about tick treatment.

Ticks are part of the spider family. They feed off the blood of animals, after which they drop to the ground and lay their eggs. The three main sources of ticks in this country are sheep, deer and hedgehogs. However, they will sometimes attach themselves to dogs, cats, humans and other animals. When one of my sons was a baby, I was horrified to find a tick attached to his head after playing in grass in Scotland.

Before a tick feeds, it looks like a small spider. It sits at the top of grass stalks with its front legs held up waiting for an animal to come by. Once it gets onto the animal, it crawls up the body and starts to feed. The animal does not usually feel this, as the tick injects a local anaesthetic along with anti-coagulants to make the blood flow. The body of the tick now grows hugely and turns a grey colour. This is the stage at which the tick becomes visible.

After feeding for a day or so, the ticks detach and drop to the ground.

When removing a tick, it is important not to squeeze it, as this can increase the risk of infections being passed from the tick. The mouthparts of the tick need to be grasped close to the skin with something like tweezers, and the tick removed by twisting, not pulling.

There is a very useful tool called the O’ Tom Hook that makes tick removal much easier. Your vet will be able to provide these.

The most worrying disease that can be transmitted by ticks is Lyme disease, caused by bacteria, and it is on the increase in the last few years. The most common symptoms in dogs and cats are lethargy, joint pain and fever, and these can occur months after the tick bite.

Other effects include neurological symptoms, heart disease and meningitis. Once diagnosed, the disease is easily treated in its earlier stages with a certain type of antibiotic. This same disease can also affect humans with the same symptoms. Infected people will often develop a skin rash a few days or weeks after the bite.

This often looks like a target, with a central circle at the bite site and an outer ring.

There are several treatments on the market that kill and repel ticks. Take care, though, as many of the modern flea preparations do not kill ticks. Talk to your veterinary surgery for more information.

Spotlight on clubs

Deepings Heritage Society - “We care about the past - and the present - for the sake of the future”

W

hether you are a newcomer to the Deepings, curious about the origin of street names and old buildings, or a long-time resident keen to share memories, Deepings Heritage would welcome hearing from you.

We hold a large collection of historic photographs, maps and documents – many donated by local people since the Society was formed almost thirty years ago. These are displayed at public events, such as Deeping Carnival and Peterborough Heritage Festival. We also plan to hold an exhibition in Market Deeping in September.

Our website – www.deepingsheritage.wordpress.com - contains articles and photographs of historical interest. New information is regularly added, together with details of meetings and our publications. Non-members can access the site and anyone opting to become a “follower” will automatically receive updates by e-mail.

We are happy to receive queries about local history, either via the website or by telephone, and do our best to help.

Meetings are held in the Conference Centre, Deepings School at 7.30pm on the second Thursday of each month between September and May. Guest speakers talk on a wide variety of historical subjects, often with a local connection. April 13th should be a particularly lively meeting, as a talk on “Lincolnshire Crime and Criminals” will be accompanied by a musical duo! We round off the current season on May 11th with a talk on “Quack Medicine through the Ages” by a retired GP. Everyone is welcome – there is a charge of £2 for non-members.

We have recently re-printed “Memories of Market Deeping” by Eric Bowman who was born in 1903. Other current publications include “The Stamford Canal”, “History of the Deepings” by F. A. Day, and “The Deepings during World War 2”, based on the notebook of a Special Constable.

The Society’s other activities include keeping an eye on planning applications and the state of our listed buildings, to try and ensure they don’t fall into disrepair. We have placed a number of information boards beside the River Welland and one in the Market Place, to illustrate the rich local history.

Members of the committee recently installed a heritage display board in the library, and helped to re-organise the Local Studies section, so that books can now be taken out on loan. They also liaised with a local school, helping young students with their local history project.

Deepings Heritage is keen to share its research and archives with the local community. We are a small society which welcomes new members, whether simply to attend our meetings or to contribute practical help.

IN THE HOT SEAT Donna McKean Smith is known to many in Market Deeping and the crafting world, as the driving force behind her “Riverside Beads and Crafts” shop, on Market Deeping’s High Street, and mum to Alex (15), Kyle (13) and Zack (8). A keen crafter as a child, Donna started Dalex Krafts in 2002 whilst on maternity leave, selling her handmade crafts and supplies.

How did Riverside become a reality?

I’ve always been very motivated to work, and running a business was a great natural step for me. I love it.

I held classes teaching card making and progressed to jewellery making and other craft classes; we gradually expanded over time to the incredible range we now have. We attract visitors from all over the UK to what has become one of the best stocked craft and bead store for miles!

I started our Dabble Days early in the business and still run two a year, enabling people to join in with crafts they want to try, whilst raising money for the Sue Ryder charity. I also support McMillan Nurses, with our charity angel and, with a group of friends, raised £6,000 last year!

What do you like to do in your free time?

Spending time with my boys and husband Steve, plus I enjoy a bit of exercise and healthy eating/ baking.

Where were you born, and what is your happiest childhood memory?

I was born in Bicester, Oxfordshire, but moved to Eye as a baby and to Deeping at the age of twenty-one. One of my happiest memories was crafting with my family and making Fimo

How do the New Inheritance Tax Rules Work?

T

he new rules that remove millions of family homes from inheritance tax have now taken effect. From April 5th 2017, each individual can claim an additional allowance of £100,000 to offset the sale of a family home on death, on top of their existing £325,000 inheritance tax exemption. This new tax allowance will rise to £175,000 by 2020, allowing a couple to pass on an estate valued at or under £1m tax-free.

Not everyone will benefit, as the increased allowance will not be available to those without children, and there will be a taper applied to those with estates worth more than £2m.

To claim the new allowance, you must leave a property in your estate which you must have lived in it as your main residence at some point.

A property that has always been a buy-to-let, for example, will not qualify.

The new allowance is available only when estates are directly inherited by children, stepchildren, adopted children or grandchildren. It will not apply if property is left to brothers, sisters, nieces or nephews.

The limit increase creates more tax efficiency, following on from

recent changes to pension planning where pensions can also be passed on to future generations tax-free.

Given that during the tax year that ended on April 5th 2016 HM Revenue and Customs declared a record £4.6 billion in inheritance tax takings, there has never been a better time to consider your own planning.

Inheritance tax is simply no longer just a tax for the wealthy. The most important thing to do is examine whether you’ll pay inheritance tax and what to do about it. As always, we believe that advice is essential.

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Burglary

T

here are many offences relating to the Theft Act; however, the penultimate offence I want to consider is that of burglary. This offence strikes at the very heart of our homes, invading our privacy and causing much anguish.

Section 9 of the Theft Act 1968 states: 9(1) A person is guilty of burglary if (a) he enters any building or part of a building as a trespasser and with intent to commit any such offence as is mentioned in sub-section (2) (relates to stealing/ GBH/criminal damage) (b) having entered any building or part of a building as a trespasser, he steals or attempts to steal anything in the building or that part of it, or inflicts or attempts to inflict on any person therein any grievous bodily harm.

As can be seen, there are two elements to the offence.

The first is entering as a trespasser with intent to commit an offence. The second is, having entered as a trespasser, then commits, or attempts to commit, an offence. Burglary carries a sentence of ten years imprisonment, (or fourteen years if a dwelling), and a minimum of three years if the third conviction. If aggravated, it carries a life sentence.

The offence is aggravated if the suspect has with them a firearm, imitation firearm, weapon of offence or explosive, (known by the mnemonic WIFE).

A part of a building can be anywhere inside a building where the offender does not have authority to access and is therefore a trespasser. For example, a customer going behind the till area in a shop, or a visiting friend is shown into the kitchen but goes into the living room uninvited.

Entering a building can be physical – the whole body or part of a body such as just the hand, using an instrument such as a fishing rod to hook something, or

even an innocent party such as a child under the age of ten. The last two are considered to be an extension of the offender and so the offence is complete, as long as there is the intent to steal, damage or commit GBH. Many offences of burglary are committed by opportunists who see a simple weakness in a building and exploit it. Words from the Mayor Councillor Wayne Lester

Hello readers.

Another busy month for me. I attended the Gang Show at the Deeping School, (with performances from the Scout and Guide organisations); the SKDC Chairman’s Charity Gala at the Bourne Corn Exchange in aid of her charities; an afternoon tea at the Community Centre in Market Deeping, to give thanks to all the volunteers that give up their time for Age Concern Deepings; and a service at Lincoln Cathedral for the High Sheriff of Lincoln. I also attended a Charity Dinner Dance held by the Mayor of Whittlesey, and then hosted my own Charity Dinner Dance, where we raised over £300 on the evening for my chosen charities, (The Deepings Men’s Group and the Army Cadets Deeping Detachment). I was proud to raise the Commonwealth flag on March 13th, and, as I write, I am looking forward to a number of Civic events in Grantham, Gainsborough, Spalding and Horncastle.

Council News The council “flew the flag” on Commonwealth Day, March 13th, where representation was made by Market Deeping Town Council, Deeping St. James Parish Council, the Rotary Club and the Church.

Grass cutting of LCC verges. We are currently evaluating tenders for the cutting of the grass verges and hope to have a contractor in place around April / May in readiness for the new cutting season.

Footpath No. 4 (to the side of Tesco, leading to the new housing site). We are engaged in further discussions with LCC over the realignment of this footpath due to recent development of the area; we are seeking to ensure that this pathway is reinstated as close as possible to its original route and that further improvements are made to provide a safe and accessible route between the new development and Tesco and that we maintain the rights of way. This will also be important to ensure footways are maintained in any new proposed development in this area. We will keep you informed of our progress.

ello readers, I hope you have all been well throughout March. We all experienced a range of disruptive weather during the past month, from heavy rain downpours, very strong winds as storm Doris arrived, and there was even snow at the start of the month. These weather patterns caused some challenging driving conditions and, as a consequence, there was unfortunately a number of serious road traffic accidents in the Deepings, which may have been prevented with some extra care.

Even though in March the clocks sprang forward one hour, (causing the evenings to become lighter longer on a daily basis, and with hopefully better weather on the horizon), please still be mindful of your own driving and consider others, to ensure the safety of us all. This is certainly the case in those areas with many pedestrians and especially children, such as the high street, the streets near to the many schools in our area, and close to the green areas around Deeping.

The more eagled-eyed reader amongst yourselves will have noticed a change in my driving school name to JOLLEY’S, as I have this past few weeks decided to become an independent driving instructor. Whilst I am still able to offer the same style and commitment to my pupils, I am now in a position to add extra
