Welcome to Your February Issue.

And so, hold on tight, here comes Valentine’s Day! I think these words from the French author, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, strike a truly romantic tone for me: “Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction”.

Whilst you’re all “looking outward” then, I hope you enjoy the many ways in which this month’s issue stirs up those wonderful emotions.

However, if that doesn’t have the required effect, don’t worry, there’s a recipe for pancakes for later in the month - love will find a way!

Claire x New beginnings are already here – spring lambs, aconites and daffodils bringing hope that warmer weather won’t be far behind. This month’s magazine, though, highlights some other “new beginnings”. Read how several entrepreneurs in our part of the world are striking out with their ambitious new business ventures. We wish them all the very best for the future.

Finally, upon entering a pub quiz in Glasgow recently, a friend of mine was baffled by his very first question – “Hey you! What’re you looking at, Jimmy?” Apologies then to all of our Scottish readers and, just as we’re about to feast on one of your greatest inventions of haggis, neaps and tatties, (it being close to Burns Night on January 25th, as I write), many thanks for that.

Valentine's Day - February 14th - What’s that all about then?

Take a brief romantic stroll through the centuries, up to today’s commercial orgy of flowers, jewellery and chocolates.

In Ancient Rome, February 13th, 14th and 15th were celebrated as “Lupercalia”, a pagan fertility festival, seen as a basis for a celebration of love on this date.

AD 289 - A Christian, Valentine of Rome, is martyred under Emperor Claudius. While in jail, this priest is said to have converted his jailer by healing his blind daughter’s sight. He is later said to have fallen in love with the daughter, sending her a note saying “From your Valentine”, but this is apocryphal.

AD 496 - Pope Gelasius declared February 14th to be “St Valentine’s Day”, a Christian feast day to match the still-popular pagan festival of Lupercalia.

AD 1382 - Geoffrey Chaucer writes his Parlement of Foules (or “Parliament of Fowls”), which is widely taken to be the first linking of St Valentine’s Day to romantic love. Celebrating the engagement of Richard II of England and Anne of Bohemia, he wrote: “For this was on St. Valentine’s Day/ When every fowl cometh there to choose his mate”.

AD 1601 - St Valentine’s Day has entered the popular consciousness to the extent that Shakespeare mentions it in Ophelia’s lament in “Hamlet”: “To-morrow is Saint Valentine’s day,/ All in the morning betime,/And I a maid at your window,/To be your Valentine.”

Mid-18th century - The passing of lovenotes becomes popular in England, a precursor to the St Valentine’s Day card as we know it today.

Early ones are made of lace and paper.

1797 – “The Young Man’s Valentine Writer” is published, suggesting appropriate rhymes and messages, and, as postal services became more affordable, the anonymous St Valentine’s Day card became possible. By the early 19th century, they become so popular that factories start to mass-produce them.

Mid-1980s - The commercialisation continues: noting the sales effect on chocolate, flowers and cards, the diamond industry gets involved, promoting St Valentine’s Day as a time for giving jewellery and so the “tradition” takes off.

AD 2017 - An estimated 1 billion St Valentine’s Day cards will be sent worldwide this year, making it the second most card-heavy celebration, after Christmas.

Sarah’s Dream Come True

ince Sarah’s Dream opened on the High Street in Market Deeping, Sarah Calderbank has found that the reality of her own shop is everything she ever hoped for. An Aladdin’s cave of unusual gifts, knick-knacks and party favours, the shelves are filled with whimsy at an affordable price.

The shop is home to an assortment of jewellery and curios, including the miniature world range of resin houses and furniture, plus all you need to build your own fairy garden. In stock are the popular salt lamps, rotating tea-light holders, a variety of incense sticks and holders, and even a kit for that everimportant visit from the tooth fairy. Deeping fudge is also available. Customers also have the option to try Avon products in store from a large selection.

Helium balloons and wrapping paper are part of the shop’s party accessories, and Sarah is very excited to showcase a new product, stuffed balloons!

For Valentine’s Day, she will be offering cut tulips, presented inside a balloon, but the service is not simply limited to flowers and romance. F ive Steps to a ‘F lipping Perfect’ Pancake Day! This Pancake Day (Tuesday, February 28th) don’t be a flop. Just ditch the packet mix and impress your friends and family with delicious homemade pancakes. They take minutes to make and are tastier and better for you, so please see below some top tips on hosting a ‘flipping perfect’ Pancake Day, from Head Chef, Gary Durrant, at Five Star boutique hotel, The Arch, London.

1) Pick a pancake style Almost every country and culture has its own version of pancakes, from a Malaysian ‘Lempeng’, made with banana and coconut; to a French crepe; a fat Canadian pancake stack, or classic British pancakes served with sugar and lemon. The mixture for pancakes differs depending on the country’s readily available ingredients, such as corn in Venezuela, cabbage in Japan, and rice in Nepal. All types of pancakes are relatively easy to make, so why not consider trying some different kinds to spice up your Pancake Day?

2) Fat matters If you are making traditional English pancakes, make sure to use plenty of fat to get the batter nice and crispy. If you use oil, then I recommend vegetable oil, and if you use butter, then clarified butter works best.

3) Timing Pancakes should usually only take about two to three minutes to cook, but it’s best to ignore the clock and check for bubbles on the top of the pancake, which means it’s ready to flip over. Make sure not to cook it for much longer than two to three minutes, though, as the batter could dry out.

4) Toppings Pancakes are delicious both sweet and savoury, depending on your taste. They go very well with fresh fruit, chocolate, and maple syrup, but equally well with ham, cheese, and bacon. Try using different cheeses such as brie, ricotta, or blue cheese, which all taste amazing when melted inside a crispy pancake.

5) Hitting the pan Don’t just dollop the mixture into the pan with any old kitchen utensil. It's helpful if you spoon the batter into the pan using a large ladle, so it can be poured into the hot pan in one go. As soon as the batter hits the pan, tip it around from side to side, to get the base evenly coated with a nice thin layer of batter.

Here is a simple pancake recipe for making ten pancakes: Ingredients: 75g of plain flour, 120ml of full fat milk, pinch of sugar, pinch of salt and 1 egg.

Method: Put the flour, salt, and sugar into a bowl and make a dip in the centre using a spoon. In a separate bowl, whisk the milk and egg together, and then whisk this gradually into the flour mixture. The batter should resemble the consistency of single cream.

Now follow the tips above for pancake heaven.

A heavy non-stick frying pan, about 16cm across, is best – over a steady, medium to high heat.

Join in, Have Fun and Make a Difference!

Would you like to do something to help make a difference to the lives of local older people?

Evergreen Care Trust is currently looking for volunteers to fill a variety of roles. Use your current knowledge and skills, or learn some new ones, to enable this well-respected Stamford charity do more to help seniors.

Roles to be filled include that of Project Manager, (to oversee the refurbishment of its newly acquired headquarters in Barnack Road), along with a Caretaker and a Health and Safety Officer.

Alternatively, you could help in ways not normally associated with charity work — for example, Rosie Maclennan would like to hear from you if you’re a whizz on social media (particularly Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn), or an Ebay expert with time to spare to help. Or, if you love gardening and are keen to get your green fingers working on a project,

please get in touch.

A few hours of your time each month could help Evergreen raise much-needed funds or create awareness of the charity’s invaluable and much-appreciated activities. As a volunteer, you can choose to commit to regular hours, or be involved as needed, depending on the specific project.

There’s even the opportunity to learn new skills for free! A spot of pampering can be particularly therapeutic for senior ladies (and men too) and a hand massage and manicure from a volunteer member of Evergreen’s Hand and Nail team has brought a smile to many a face.

Evergreen Care Trust provides a variety of paid-for services, including a Home Support Service,

lunches and home delivery soup lunches, as well as volunteer projects including the Befriender scheme that aims to help combat loneliness.

Hardy Plant Society The Hardy Plant Society was formed to foster interest in hardy herbaceous plants and ensure that all garden-worthy plants remain in cultivation.

Among the many joys of membership is the seed distribution scheme, where a minimal charge brings packets of seed rarely found elsewhere. The Society includes specialist plant groups; galanthus, paeonies and variegated plants, but best of all are the local group meetings. Here, like-minded plantaholics gather for discussion and listen to talks by knowledgeable people. You don’t need to be a member to attend meetings, but you’ll probably want to join when you see the advantages.

Our local group meets at Swines Meadow Nursery, 47 Towngate East, Market Deeping, PE6 8LQ. We are friendly and enthusiastic gardeners and plantlovers with all levels of F e brua ry 2017

skill and a common aim to learn more about hardy perennial plants. We meet on the third Saturday of the month through the winter at 2.30pm. Non-members pay £4.

On Saturday February 18th, professional gardener, writer and broadcaster Geoff Stebbings will talk about The Gardens of Ireland. In March, we have a talk by Melanie Collins of Mickfield Hostas, (who have the nation’s largest collection, with over 2,000 varieties!)

In summer, two plant fairs are held at Swines Meadow Nursery, an opportunity to find more unusual plants for those who like something a bit different.

Words from the Mayor Councillor Wayne Lester

Hello to you all. I have been very busy over the last month along with my fellow Councillors and able staff at the Town Hall. We have been dealing with an election for a vacant seat at the Council, the withdrawal of grass verge cutting from Lincolnshire County Council and deliberating over our precept to ensure we deliver value for money services in the town.

My wife and the Town Clerks have also been organising the next Civic event, putting plans together for the Civic Dinner and Dance.

We have entertainment to start the evening off, a great menu and music to dance the night away. I sincerely hope you can join us both at this fabulous event. It will be held on Saturday March 11th at the Deepings Sports and Social Club, tickets are priced at £30, and all proceeds will go to the Mayor’s Charities. If

Council News Market Deeping Election on January 12th, and by a clear majority, we welcome our new Councillor, Virginia Moran to the Council; I wish her well and look forward to working with her.

Grass cutting consultation. The majority of the returns said yes to Market Deeping Town Council taking on the responsibility for cutting the grass verges, when Lincolnshire County Council cease their obligations. The cost of these works has been included in our budgets for next year.

You will be pleased to know that the Council has deliberated over the budgets for a number of months, and have finalised the Precept for next year. This includes grass cutting to verges as mentioned above; improvement works to the zebra crossing on Godsey Lane, opposite the William Hildyard School, (which will include footpath widening); and maintaining all the services in the town that we currently enjoy.

After months of correspondence and site visits, it finally looks like footpath No. 4 (to the side of Tesco, leading to the new housing site) is now undergoing improvement works to ensure that the surface is suitable for all users; we will be keeping an eye on progress.

Better Nutrition in the New Year: Setting Yourself up for Success Another year has come and gone and it is time, again, to set those health goals for the New Year, so how are you getting on? Like many of us, you may be experiencing frustration and even disappointment that you didn’t achieve the health goals you wanted to over the past year.

Some of the most common New Year’s resolutions centre on losing weight and eating better. In the fast-paced world in which we live, when it comes to weight loss and weight control, we want results and we want them fast. With the dieting messages that surround us, it can be very tempting to resort to fad diets to get the ‘promised’ quick results. However, these go against the central principles of healthy eating and good nutrition: balance, variety and moderation.

Furthermore, fad diets are often too low in calories and can result in tiredness and irritation, making them hard to sustain in the long run. Fad diets are seen as something to go ‘on’, and then go ‘off, ‘. When people go ‘off’ these diets, they usually regain the weight and blame themselves for not having enough discipline, willpower or motivation, when in reality, the problem was that they were going about it the wrong way. 97% of dieters regain everything they lost … and more! … within three years.

We all want to be healthy and physically fit; that is why so many of us resolve to focus on health and fitness every New Year. Health and fitness are not necessarily synonymous with one another but they do interact.

Diet is synonymous with health, and moderate exercise certainly supplements a healthy diet. Fitness is a measure of physical capability, mostly achieved through exercise although a good diet certainly helps in promoting physical fitness.

For the athlete and hardened gym enthusiast exercise is generally very intensive, but for most of us, moderate exercise with a balanced diet will keep our body healthy, our muscles toned and give us a better shape.

However, regular exercise offers so much more than toned muscles and stamina; it reduces stress, boosts endorphins (the happiness chemical), boosts self-esteem, improves selfconfidence, relieves anxiety and aids restful sleep. So please don’t give up - working out has positive effects far beyond the gym.

Try to identify the reasons you have lost your enthusiasm: Is your exercise routine too tough? If so, reduce the intensity and train more often.

Are you training regularly but not seeing progress?

Remember, diet plays a major part. Seek advice from your gym instructor.

If you are bored, set new fitness goals and for 10 minutes before you go to sleep at night visualise achieving them (Yes - dream a little - you will be surprised how motivational it can be).

Try not to “know too much”. Searching the internet can cause confusion so speak to your instructor, set a routine, stick with it and review it regularly.

If you feel de-motivated, train with a friend; you will be surprised at how competitive you both become.

Think - if you give up now, what happens next?

Re-discover the reason you joined the gym and go again, only this time do it right; it won’t be easy but nothing worth having is achieved with ease, and when you start seeing and feeling the benefits, you will begin to love your gym days.

he final months of 2016 saw yet another entrepreneur establish a new business in Bourne, but this one was a “sisters-in-law combo” and, since the end of October, the whole experience has been, to quote Sarah Carter, “totally manic!” This is Sarah, whose younger sisterin-law is Hanna Williams, and together, they are in charge of Bourne Photographic Studios, housed in re-furbished premises on Cherry Holt Road.

Sarah has eight years’ experience as a freelance photographer, where the bulk of her commissions were for weddings and babies. Hanna, meanwhile, has recently gained photography qualifications and arrives from a printing background. Together, they could see an opening in the market in their rapidly-expanding town, and have grabbed it.

An emphasis is placed on the photography sitting, within the studio, being “the whole experience”,

with refreshments and snacks, toys and a play area, to make it all as relaxed and enjoyable as possible. Special events, such as the recent Christmas week-end, where party snacks and goody bags (and even some “respite care” for the accompanying parents!) seem typical of these young ladies’ enthusiastic plans. Look out for Mother’s Day and Easter “Specials”, coming up soon.

Future plans also involve hiring out some of their studio space for camera clubs or for individuals’ projects. Another studio is also likely to be on stream before long.

Clearly, two very ambitious ladies, and the glowing comments on their bulging Facebook pages would seem to indicate that they’ve got it right!

My Top Tips for Booking the Perfect Honeymoon You’ve been fantasising about it for months (if not years), you’re buzzing with different ideas and you can’t wait to get started – but where to begin? Although exciting, the high expectations and dizzying array of choices and decisions to make mean that booking your honeymoon can also be stressful and even a little overwhelming at times. However, help is at hand – follow my six useful booking tips to minimise stress and ensure that you round off your wedding in true fairy-tale style, by having the honeymoon you’ve been dreaming of.

1. Decide on names

Before your honeymoon, it’s important to decide whether or not you want to travel under your new married name. In general, it is best to book airline tickets and rooms under the pre-wedding names of both parties, as they will need to match the name on your passport (which you’re unlikely to be able to have changed until a few weeks or months after the wedding.) Whatever you do, stick to your decision once you’ve made it – airlines charge heavily for name changes!

2. Speak to someone with firsthand knowledge Wherever you decide to go in the end,

be certain to talk to someone who has actually been to the destination and to the property you’re intending to stay in – nothing beats first-hand knowledge, and speaking to me can be both enlightening and reassuring!

3. Take all the time you need

If the thought of jetting off on your honeymoon the moment your wedding is over is making you feel rushed, then simply wait awhile! Planning a wedding and a honeymoon at the same time is a lot of pressure – if you feel like it’s too much at once, wait until a few months after the wedding to go away. Not only will you give yourselves more time to plan, but with the wedding out of the way, all honeymoon-related decisions will have your full attention – meaning that they won’t be hasty or panicked!

4. Be on top of your budget

Perhaps the main cause of honeymoonrelated stress is money; however, if you

plan your budget carefully and stay on top of it throughout your booking, it doesn’t have to be. Decide together which parts of your honeymoon you’re happy to splash out more on, and where you could maybe save, and be sure to track what you spend.

If you both have several different destinations in mind, narrowing down your honeymoon options can be the hardest part. they should still be dormant; any later and, if it is mild, they will be starting to move into growth. As they are still dormant, bare-rooted fruit trees can still be planted and autumn fruiting raspberries pruned.

F

ebruary is a strange month! It could be the coldest month but still have warm days and when it is cold, freezing or very wet it doesn’t quite seem right to start planting seeds. However, there are plenty that you can be starting off indoors and out. It is possible to sow crops such as broad beans along with early peas (under cloches), parsnips and garlic, but only do so if the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. A good idea for sowing peas is to use lengths of plastic guttering: half fill them with goodquality seed compost and sow the seeds about two inches apart, cover with compost, water and keep in a light spot under cover. Once the seedlings have grown to about three inches, make a shallow drill and slide the contents of the guttering into the drill. Make sure they are firmly bedded and water them. Also shallots can be planted; dig shallow drills about seven inches apart so that the tips are just showing, water and keep weed-free. Other crops that can be sown outdoors (watch the weather and make a judgement) are turnips, rhubarb crowns and grape vines.

Seeds that can be planted indoors or under cover include broad beans, Brussels, leeks, onions, salad leaves, tomatoes, peas, spinach, summer cabbage, sprouting broccoli – to name but a few.

Make sure that you have got all of your seed potatoes by the end of the month and that they are spread out in a seed tray, or in egg boxes, in a light, cool room where they can “chit” (sprout shoots) before being planted out. If the “chits” look pale and spindly, the room is probably too warm or too dark.

The soil can be prepared for the spring planting by completing the winter digging, if not already done, by removing any weeds that have survived the winter months.

To warm up the soil for planting next month, cover it with fleece or polythene and, if you haven’t already, add wellrotted manure or compost to the prepared soil.

Other jobs that can be carried out are:Removing dead leaves from cabbages and sprouts –if they start to rot, they can spread mould and mildew.

Make sure that winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons, whose food supply is a little short at this time of year.

Spray fruit trees, whilst they are still dormant, with a plant-oil based winter wash to help prevent aphids and scale insects.

Feed and mulch fruit trees and bushes.

Online IT security threats will continue to grow significantly in 2017, as hacking and scamming sources increase their investment in technology and in training criminals and cyber-terrorists. So who are these hackers?

Hackers with hats Articles on Internet security often refer to hackers by a ‘hat’ colour; • White Hat: The good guys – ‘ethical’ hackers who focus their efforts on trying to break security systems to improve them.

• Black hat: The bad guys, intent on violating system security for malicious reasons or personal gain • Grey Hat: A mixture of these two. These hackers will try to illegally break system security but not necessarily for personal gain. However, they often contact the target of the breech and offer to ‘fix’ the problem for a fee. Some even publish details of their successful hacks.

The BIG boys Billions of pounds are lost every year to hackers and scammers. Not surprisingly this has attracted the interest of much larger groups.

• Hacktivists: This group include cyber-terrorists, an area of particular concern to the modern world. They target systems for purposes of furthering religious, political or ideological beliefs and ideas.

• Organised Crime: International crime gangs that share information and invest heavily in their own IT systems and hacking tools and skills.

• Governments: The threat of the above groups, plus the chance of carrying out their own cyber-espionage, has forced heavy funding in cyber-warfare and prevention by all governments.

The “Internet of Things” This is a term that came into being due to the number of devices that now connect to the Internet, other than the usual PCs, tablets and Smartphones. It includes ‘Smart’ devices such as TVs, set top boxes (e.g. Freeview), printers, fridges, heating systems, light bulbs, electricity meters etc. More and more of our everyday devices are beginning to have integral Internet connectivity.

Many of these devices do not allow for regular security updates, so they can be more readily exploited by the hackers.

What should I do about it?

For many of the modern day threats we are in the hands of our service providers for protection. However, at an individual level, we should ensure that we install and maintain Internet Security software, and be cautious when using e-mails and visiting new web sites.

I would also recommend at least two sets of backups.

The first is on a regular basis to a connected device, such as a disk drive or cloud (Internet), back up option; the second to a device, such as an external disk, that can be disconnected from the system after the backup.

This latter tip is due to a new wave of ransomware virus that searches for all data including any connected backup device and any active cloud (Internet) backup. Ransomware attempts to extort money from the target by encrypting any data found and demanding payment to provide a code to allow decryption.

Taking a tip from the Hotel Industry - by interior designer Yasmin Chopin

S

pending two days with hoteliers at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Stansted, for the Hotel Designs Summit, gave me a unique insight into the hotel industry. I was invited by the hotel industry to speak on the subject of blogging, which was well received and generated much discussion and enquiry. We talked about design, interiors and customer service and how these things add up to make a guest feel very special. There are some design tips below…!

Whatever your reason for staying in a hotel, your basic needs will be met by “The Three Bs”. Tim Mills, a partner of the awardwinning Edgar House Hotel in Chester, explained that, once you’ve conquered the three Bs, you can go very much further to achieving a customer experience par excellence.

So what can we pick up from this? Here are three ideas for your home:

Another room has a colourful ceiling, and the rooms on the river side of the property have their beds raised by a metre, so that guests can enjoy the views whilst eating breakfast in bed!”

Having got the interiors sorted, it then comes down to the staff and service. Reaching out to make that very special connection with his guests, he provides a parking place with their name on; then he or his partner personally welcomes them with a glass of bubbly. He finds out if they have any special food or beverage ‘likes’ and goes all the way to ensuring that those items are in stock.

And at the end of their stay, each guest receives a goodie bag to go home with!

We’ve all heard the phrase, ‘going the extra mile’... well in Tim’s case it seems very appropriate and I am not surprised that the Edgar House Hotel is number one out of twenty-five hotels listed as ‘The Best Small Hotels in the World’ by Trip Advisor – a well-deserved accolade!

am not often shocked. But, just before Christmas, I was horrified when I was contacted by an elderly client. The reason – she had just been “coldcalled” by someone who told her that she was going to have her home taken off her by the local authority to pay for care. Understandably, she was scared, but fortunately she called us. This was not an unsolicited phone call; it was someone going from door to door, knocking.

According to a recent survey, which details the ten biggest issues preventing sellers from getting the asking price when selling their homes, bad smells top the list for homebuyers.

“Inspired Wallpaper” asked 1,500 people what the most likely issues are that would put them off buying a house when viewing a property, and 36% said this was the biggest reason.

Behind unpleasant smells on the list were bad layouts and D.I.Y. disasters, with outdated fixtures and fittings and clutter close behind. In addition, 13% named garish décor as their biggest turn-off. In seventh position on the list is mould, followed by lack of character and a disappointing garden.

The research highlights just how important it is to your home without these irritations, because they could result in lower bids for the property and possibly cost the homeowner a sale.

We feel it’s important for children to learn about where we live and our local community, so we have recently started going out on walks around the village. We arranged a visit to the fire station, which the children loved, and are planning further visits to the library and going to feed the ducks.

Our opening times have recently been extended to meet the needs of parents, so we now open from 8am to 6pm. We have a range of sessions available, from three hours to all-day, termtime or all-year.

We offer fifteen hours a week free childcare for all two*, three and four year olds (*subject to eligibility).

Pets and Vets

FOR THE LOVE OF OUR PETS

The human animal bond has probably always been present, initially for hunting, transport and guarding. In modern times, animals have effectively become family members, with mutual close relationships. In America, surveys suggest that between 60% and 80% of dogs sleep on, or in, their owner’s bed!

It is known that owning pets has great health benefits, reducing blood pressure, cholesterol and stress. Riding horses gives improvements to people with neurological damage and for those with handicaps. We have guide dogs, hearing dogs, riding for the disabled, and pat dogs .We have much-loved cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, reptiles and birds. They live in our homes and are generally constant in their affections to us. Their friendship is usually much less complicated than with other humans. Our pets improve our lives and we want them to be healthy and long-lived.

There are numerous stories of animals saving their owners: dogs and cats warning their owners about carbon monoxide or fire; dogs rescuing people who are drowning; dogs detecting malignant skin and lung cancers; horses moving their owners away from danger; and even a pot-bellied pig who laid in the middle of the road until somebody came to help her owner, who had suffered a heart attack.

member. I have witnessed this grief many times. I have had people collapse onto the ground into a foetal position, their grief has been so great. I still remember what I felt when I was a young boy and Whisky, my poodle, had to be put to sleep after breaking his back in a road traffic accident, and also the grief my son felt when his cat was run over.

It is very important then that we, as vets, understand this bond. We need to help our pets recover from illness and surgery by allowing owners to visit them. We need to let owners be present when their animal is sedated, prior to surgery. We need to be aware that we are responsible for every animal – they are an important part of somebody’s family.

This relationship works both ways of course. Our love for our pets is greatly beneficial to them as well. We improve their health, both by our physical care for them and the emotional care we provide.

Studies have shown that animals recovering from painful surgery feel less pain when their owners are present, as well as being less stressed. There have also been many cases of humans risking, and sometimes losing, their lives trying to save their pets.

It is not surprising then that, when our pet dies, we suffer a level of grief similar to losing a close family

A little bit of History

Discovering. . .

The drinking fountain A constant supply of fresh water is now taken for granted and we use it without thought of its origins, but in past times householders had no such convenience and often filled buckets and pans from nearby rivers and dykes which was frequently contaminated.

As a result, public drinking fountains to provide a pure supply became popular during the 19th century, the first at Holborn in London in 1859 which was soon being used by thousands of people daily. Others followed around the country, often of grand design and dedicated to a local worthy, but always with the intention of providing a refreshing drink to passersby.

In 1906, the parish council at Market Deeping commissioned the construction of a drinking fountain from John Elwes Noble, an experienced artesian well-borer from nearby Thurlby, who also had a reputation as a water diviner. He carried out drillings for many local authorities, industrial firms and country mansions in the area such as the vicarage at West Deeping, sending details of the strata and location of every bore drilled to the Geological Society in London which assisted them in their compilation of the geological survey of England and Wales.

The Market Deeping borehole was sunk in the middle of the main road and a large crowd gathered to see the first water which had been located at a depth of 121 feet gushing to the surface at an estimated rate of 1,000 gallons an hour.

The bore was sealed ready for use and a small public drinking fountain subsequently erected on the spot was unveiled before a large crowd by the Member of Parliament for Stamford, Lord John Cecil, who was entertained after the ceremony at a public lunch held at the Bull Inn nearby.

The water from this bore was so pure that many people who believed in its health giving properties drank a pint of it daily while several national newspapers reported that as a result of this beneficial supply, Market Deeping was a place where you could live to be 100.

Unfortunately, the fountain became a victim of progress and was removed to make way for additional car parking spaces fifty years ago although the water located by Noble continues to supply the town through the modern piped distribution system maintained by Anglian Water, so enabling residents to fill a kettle or take a shower at the turn of a tap.

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings: Robbery – (What’s that all about then?)

Last month I wrote about the basic offence of theft, adding that I would go onto consider other offences under the Theft Act 1968. This month, I want to discuss robbery, which is, thankfully, an extremely rare offence in our area.

Section 8 of the Theft Act states: 8(1) A person is guilty of robbery if he steals, and immediately before or at the time of doing so, and in order to do so, he uses force on any person or puts or seeks to put any person in fear of being then and there subjected to force.

Robbery is an aggravated form of theft and, therefore, a theft has to be proved. If no theft is present, there is no robbery but there may be an assault.

The aggravating factor is the use, or threats of force which is used in order to commit the offence. There has to be a direct link between the use of force and the theft and is used to enable the theft to take place. For example, if a criminal was to lift a purse out of a handbag without the victim knowing, they have committed a theft. If, however, the criminal was to grab the handbag and, at the same time, push the victim over, and then run off with the

handbag, they have committed a robbery.

The use of force or causing/seeking to cause fear must be to enable the theft (stealing) to take place.

If, at the end of an assault, the offender, as an afterthought, decides to take the victim’s wallet, that is not robbery, it is assault and theft.

It is not necessary to prove that any person was actually put in fear of force being used. The offender only needs to seek to put someone in fear, and so the state of mind of the offender is the key element.

If an offender says to the victim, “Give me your phone or I will punch you”, and the victim hands over the phone, you have a robbery.

W

ith the colder temperatures comes the potential for riding or driving on an icy surface. The main roads are treated quite reliably, but it is the rural roads where we all need to take more care. A flow of water, even if a trickle, across a road can be lethal, and there are certain locations where standing water is commonplace.

Other causes for ice patches include where the sun cannot reach, for example near large buildings or trees, and also cross winds from elevated or exposed roads. Half the problem with ice is not being able to spot it.

Sticking to the main roads is one suggestion I offer to my pupils. The other is to make sure that you allow more time for the journey. It is not possible to safely travel the exact same journeys in the exact same time period, with differing road conditions. Rubbing off some speed to account for adverse weather will

help the driver and the car to adapt appropriately.

When traction between tyre and road surface is compromised, ideally, the best bet is to not even travel, but if you do find yourself in this circumstance, the aim is to maximise the potential for grip by delicate application of brakes, gas and steering.

Create bigger gaps between vehicles, so as to allow any action that has to be taken to be less intense.

Lastly, spare a thought for the elderly getting about in the winter. Although they may have a vehicle, it is possible that they might need some assistance with general maintenance regarding tyres and fluid levels. Alternatively, they may not feel confident driving when it is really cold, and a helping hand to fetch provisions may be gratefully received, even if not actually requested.
