Discovering Bourne issue 156, August 2024

Welcome to your August issue...

This month we celebrate the twentieth anniversary of ‘Discovering Magazines’. In two decades, a staggering total of 709 issues will have been delivered across our wide distribution area of South Lincolnshire and North Cambridgeshire. The ‘Discovering Magazines’ journey began in August 2004 with ‘The Whittlesey Advertiser’ which was to merge with ‘Discover Whittlesey’ and re-launch as ‘Discovering Whittlesea’ in 2009.

September 2011 saw ‘Discovering Bourne’ established by publisher Andy Armstrong. Two years later, “Discovering March” appeared, followed in July 2015 by “Discovering the Deepings”, and “Discovering Wisbech” in May 2018. Andy Armstrong is “still going strong” as Operations Director. In July 2013, I became Sales Director, and a year later, John Schwarz was appointed as Group Editor.

Since then, our happy team of talented designers, sales and accounts personnel and willing contributors have worked tirelessly to produce magazines which serve to inform, advise and entertain; we now publish and distribute over 48,000 magazines a month!

Here’s to the future!

With the Olympic Games almost here, this glorious summer of sport continues to cause delight and despair in equal measure. Departing England coach, Gareth Southgate almost managed a knighthood and a silver trophy. Still, it’s cricket season, so farewell to football post-mortems.

England’s ladies seem invincible right now and it’s fascinating to see our men handing out the same treatment to the West Indies that we had to endure from them for decades! Sport has a way of doing that … so maybe, just maybe, “football’s coming home” from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America?

In the meantime, there will be plenty more “Discovering Magazines” coming your way as we enter our third decade in business –more ‘Dad one-liners’ like these:

• When she mixed up the herbs with the fish, I told her it was neither the thyme nor the plaice.

• I’m still waiting for my copy of “How to Avoid Online Scams” to arrive. I ordered it six weeks ago!

Chalice of the Gods

Percy Jackson has saved the world multiple times - battling monsters and Titans but these days the modern-day son of Poseidon is hoping for a regular final year at school. Too bad the Greek gods have other plans.

The cupbearer of the gods, Ganymede, is missing his golden chalice. Not only is this embarrassing, it’s also potentially disastrous. One sip from the cup will turn any mortal into a powerful god.

Can Percy and his friends find the chalice before it falls into the wrong hands?

If they do, will they be able to resist its awesome power?

The Edge

Retired from the Army’s special ops force, Travis Devine is now part of an elite undercover team in Homeland Security. But when he’s brought in by agent, Emerson Campbell to investigate the murder of a young woman, he quickly learns that this case is more personal than most.

Four days earlier Jennifer Silkwell, a high-ranking analyst for the CIA, was found dead on the Maine coastline. And her senator father once saved Emerson Campbell’s life.

Devine heads for the small town of Putnam in Maine. Small towns can harbour big secrets, and not everyone wants to share them with outsiders. Not when there’s a killer on the loose . . .

Once Upon a Time in Venice

Welcome to Venice, the fairytale city, where canals flow into hidden shadows and forbidden secrets whisper behind the masks. When Gina Bellini meets an enigmatic figure at the Venice carnival, their chemistry is unforgettable, before he vanishes into the night. Personal assistant, Issy Roberts is on location with Tinseltown’s biggest star. Will he discover her shocking lies?

Opera sensation Lucia De Santis has the world at her feet. How far will she go to get what she wants? As their fates collide, will dangerous secrets destroy their dreams?

Emperor of Rome

In her international best-seller, “SPQR”, Mary Beard told the thousand-year story of ancient Rome. Now, she shines her spotlight on the emperors who ruled the Roman empire, from Julius Caesar to Alexander Severus.

“Emperor of Rome” is not your usual

chronological account of Roman rulers. Beard asks bigger questions: What power did emperors have? Was the Roman palace really so bloodstained? “Emperor of Rome” goes directly to the heart of what it was to be Roman, offering an account of Roman history as it has never been presented before.

Bourne Academicians Step Out in Style

After all their hard work and dedication for the last two years, the Sixth Formers from Bourne Academy who come from Bourne, Spalding, Deepings and the surrounding area, celebrated the end of their exams together at the Sixth Form Prom, which was held at the prestigious Orton Hotel in Peterborough. This historic and picturesque venue dates from 1835 and gave the students the perfect send-off before they embark on their next steps at university or into employment.

The evening included a hot buffet, entertainment, photo booth and, most importantly, a relaxed environment so the students can be together as a large group for one last time as they have made close friendships during their time at Sixth Form.

All the staff at Bourne Academy and South Lincolnshire Academies Trust wish every one of our students all the best for the future and we know they will be successful in whatever they choose to do.

Sporting “Girl Power” at Witham Hall!

Very many congratulations to Year 5 Witham Hall pupil, Ophelia, who finished in first place in the Under-10 Girls’ category of the IAPS National Triathlon Finals held at Monkton Prep School in Somerset in May. In a field of over fifty competitors, Ophelia completed a 150m swim, followed by

a 2km bike ride and a 1.2 km run, finishing with an outstanding time of 15:44 minutes. This left her over a minute ahead of second place.

She not only won the National Girls’ Under-10 race but would have also won the Boys’ Under-10 race!

Sing For Life and Raise Money for Sue Ryder

Launching in September, Sing for Life 2024 are seeking over forty local women to take part in a ten-week pop-up singing project, working towards a fantastic live performance event at The Cresset on November 14th, supporting charity partner Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. You’ll learn to sing, meet new people, challenge yourself, perform live on stage AND raise money for this much-loved local charity!

Absolutely no previous singing experience is needed, just a willingness to get stuck in. Over one hundred brave women took part in Sing for Life 2023, and gave the performance of their lives, raising nearly £14,000 for the charity, a fantastic total and more than the project has ever raised before! For most of them, this was their first experience of rehearsing and singing as part of a group, and of performing in public. The project kicks off with introduction sessions on Thursday

September 5th 7pm-9pm, Friday 6th 7pm-9pm and Saturday 7th 2pm-4pm at The John Mansfield Campus, Dogsthorpe, PE1 4HX. Please call/email first to register and book your timeslot. (Don’t worry, this is NOT an audition; it’s just an opportunity to find out more and get involved.)

For more information, please visit www.peterboroughsings.org.uk, call 01733 425194 or email info@peterboroughsings.org.uk

The Sing for Life concert will be at The Cresset, Peterborough on Thursday November 14th (7.30pm).

"Blooming" Bourne Looking its Best for the Judges

Blue skies and sunshine welcomed the judges on Monday July 8th as they spent several hours being shown around Bourne and the local area.

Their remit was to assess just how well the town had met the various criteria in this, the annual “East Midlands in Bloom” competition.

The aim is to encourage the improvement of our surroundings through the imaginative use of trees, shrubs, flowers and landscaping. It also aims to achieve a litter-free and sustainable environment. This links directly to the three RHS core ‘pillars of excellence’ which are horticultural achievement, environmental responsibility and community participation.

A comprehensive itinerary had been prepared by the Bourne Town Council representatives, especially Ian Sismey, which involved highlighting the ways in which “community participation” was clearly shown. The ambitious programme to establish The Old Town Hall as an Arts Centre and entertainment venue was high on the list, as were the ‘Don’t Lose Hope’ offerings to the town (café, gift shop and community garden and shed), the Community Orchard at Bourne Woods, and Baldock’s Mill, amongst others.

The “horticultural achievement” is again shown, year after year, by the glorious displays of planters, especially alongside the roads into town, and the hanging baskets, overflowing with begonias, all thanks to the dedication of Bill Pauley and his team. What was interesting to hear from conversations with judges Stephen Dando and Audrey Leach was that the “floral aspects” of the judging contribute only around 40% of the total marks to be gained. It’s to be hoped, (and who could doubt it?) that the good folk of Bourne will have done enough to have turned the heads of the judges!

Words from the Mayor

It was shocking waking up to the sad news that a young man had been stabbed and died at The Wellhead on June 26th. Please be assured that Bourne is a safe place in which to live.

More sad news … I mentioned last month I had the great privilege of meeting Ron Priest, aged 102 years young. Sadly, a few weeks later he passed away, and our condolences are sent to his family and friends.

I was delighted to attend The Cedars’ Summer Fayre on Saturday June 30th in perfect weather. There were lots of stalls with plenty of people there, and it was lovely seeing residents enjoying themselves and seeing some staff in fancy dress.

Please, if anyone has a spare hour or two a month, The Butterfield Centre needs volunteers. If you feel you could help, please contact Clare on 01778 421422. I would also like to thank Johnson’s Hotel Linen for sending some staff to help in the garden. Your help was greatly appreciated. If any other businesses would like to help, please contact Clare.

I was delighted to show some visitors from Destination Lincolnshire around Bourne, along with Ian Sismey and Kirsty Russon (our Bourne Town Council Team) and the Leader of South Kesteven District Council, Cllr Ashley Baxter.

We visited The Old Town Hall, where a well-needed cup of tea was supplied (thank you Mrs Bloomer!), from there we headed to The Wellhead Park, Baldocks Mill, The Red Hall and, finally, which looked very inviting as it was a hot day, the outdoor pool. Everyone was very impressed. Thank you to all of you who gave tours around the buildings.

The town is looking very pretty, right now, with all the flowers blooming. Hopefully, we will be in the running for the ‘East Midlands in Bloom’ competition, to be judged on July 8th. Our thanks go to Bill Pauley and Bourne Town Council for making the town look so cheerful.

If you have any events that you would like me to attend, then please contact Bourne Town Council on 01778 426123

Friends to Help You Get More from Retirement

Local friendly society, Nene & Welland Oddfellows, is encouraging retirees in the area to get the most out of post-work life by seeing it as a time for new opportunities, adventure and friendships. The South Lincolnshire and North Cambridgeshire-based group, made up of over 450 members, mostly older adults and retirees, appreciates how the early years of retirement can be a particularly tricky time to navigate.

In a survey commissioned by the Oddfellows, it found 39% of retirees have worked through negative feelings such as loneliness, boredom and a reduced sense of identity and purpose. The group’s latest message is part of an ongoing campaign to inspire people to stay connected, and fulfilled in retirement.

Karen Earth, Branch Secretary of Nene & Welland Oddfellows, said, “You have grand plans when you retire, and rightly so, but the reality is that you have lots of free time on your hands and you need to give it structure and purpose. It can be hard to keep yourself motivated each day. It’s important to make sure you look after your emotional and social needs, and we can definitely help with that”.

The group says retirees can get more from their retirement by meeting up with new people, trying

new activities and visiting new places. Each month, it holds around eight events … from walks, talks and coffee mornings, to lunches and quizzes.

Group member, David Hitchcock, [69], from Market Deeping, retired from his job as an accountant five years ago. He says that adding regular Oddfellows events into his diary has helped him find more enjoyment in retirement.

“I’ve found that you must have something to look forward to and it’s a great way to get to know other people in a similar situation. You can also try activities that wouldn’t normally come your way, like trips out and some guest talks. You need to stay curious and try new things or boredom can creep in.”

The Society also runs around sixty online events every month which are free and open to all. Besides social events, Oddfellows members can access a wide range of benefits, including care and welfare support and a travel club. There are also opportunities to volunteer and play a part in raising money for good causes.

To find out more about Nene & Welland Oddfellows, or contact Karen on Karen.earth@oddfellows.co.uk or 01778 342006.

National Allotment Week (August 12th –18th) celebrates these green spaces and the benefits they have for our health, our wellbeing and the planet! This year’s theme is Celebrating Biodiversity on UK Allotments.

Encouraging Pollinators and Wildlife

To encourage “good” wildlife you could:

• Swap the use of chemicals for natural remedies.

• Build or create different habitats such as insect hotels, hedgehog homes, worm farms and bird boxes.

• If space allows, create a small pond.

• Grow a mix of different plants to provide food, shelter and habitats for wildlife.

• Grow some nectar-rich flowers such as lavender, geraniums, sage and oregano.

Pest and Disease Control

• Keep soil healthy.

• Rotate crops.

• Never compost infected crops.

• Use natural remedies to tackle pests –(plenty of ides to be found online).

Companion Planting

• Varying your planting, whether vegetables, fruit or flowers, which helps prevent the build-up of soil diseases.

Jobs for August include:

• Potted strawberry runners can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot where you have not grown them for at least three years.

• Cut to the ground all summer fruiting raspberry canes that have borne fruit this year and tie in the new green canes that will produce next year’s fruit.

• Outdoor tomatoes should have their growth stopped by the middle of the month – nip out the leading growing shoot just above the highest truss. Continue pinching out and do not forget to provide support for the plants as they become more heavily laden – also for cucumbers, peppers and even fruit trees.

• Keep earthing up potatoes to prevent the tubers being exposed.

• Dig over any spaces that have been left from harvesting crops, where you could grow green manure such as clover or vetch.

• The planting of vegetables and flowers/plants together that will be beneficial for the others’ growth. It may be that one will deter certain pests that will likely eat the leaves of the other. They may help with pollination and to fight disease. Some will help to attract pollinators.

• Some ideas: Mint (deters pests with its strong aroma), Nasturtiums (deter blackfly, Cabbage white butterfly and other pests), Allium family (deter carrot fly and pests due to their pungent smell) and radishes (deter pests and aphids).

Soil Health

Create a fertile, biologically active soil by:

• Adding well-rotted natural materials, such as homemade compost.

• Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes as this will encourage growth lower down.

• As space becomes available, you can plant overwintering crops such as Brussels sprouts, spring cabbage and winter cauliflowers.

Cabbage seeds can be planted in a temporary bed or in pots or modules – cover them with nets to keep off the birds and caterpillars.

• For harvesting in the autumn and beyond, you could sow lettuce (keep out of the glare of direct sun), rocket, spring onion, radish plus winter salads, including mibuna, mizuna, mustard leaf and lamb’s lettuce.

Now, let’s hope for some summer sunshine!

Ada Cole and the Bourne Klondyke

What Ada Cole saw on the quayside in Antwerp in 1911 proved to be an epiphany for her and prompted a campaign which brought the Klondyke to Bourne. A wretched ship full of live horses from England was being unloaded and poorly treated on their way to be pole-axed and sold for human consumption. After lives of hard work in town and country in the service of people, the poor horses were shown no consideration once their strength had gone.

Born on January 1st, 1860, Ada was brought up in a large family on a farm near Thetford in Norfolk. Working with animals was second nature to her. She trained as a nurse and worked at the London Fever Hospital. She was already accustomed to upbraiding Hansom Cab drivers or cattle market handlers for cruelty to their charges. Her stay in Antwerp, where she did some nursing, was on account of her sister being ‘Mother-in-charge’ of a convent there.

Ada was one of those determined people with the patience, ability and stubborn motivation to get things done. She wanted an end to the needless long-distance, live export of horses. She recruited informants. She

studied shipping lines and made site visits. She gathered intelligence and built a case for humane slaughter.

As it turned out, her model slaughterhouse was to be in Bourne. Established in 1928, the Klondyke was a departure, in offering regulated sanitary, cruelty-free abattoir facilities. There was pasture and stables and a dedicated horse ambulance. Visitors were invited to inspect the premises “without warning at any time”.

The word Klondyke, alluding to the Yukon gold rush, would have been readily understood at the time. The implication is perhaps of buildings springing up and may even have started with the brick pits located there before then.

A quite remarkable number of horses passed through, (if that is the word), until eventual closure in 1973. There is nothing to see now. The site is lost under housing estates to the south side of West Road. The narrow road to it ran from opposite West Road’s junction with Westbourne Park.

Back in 1920, The King of Belgium honoured Ada and her sister, Effie, for their wartime resistance work, using the convent as a cover for rescue and escape for those hunted by the occupation forces, including allied soldiers. This was no trifling matter. Another Norfolk nurse, Edith Cavell, was executed for similar bravery.

More homes promised

The new Labour government’s plan to ease

affordability

MARKET INSIGHTS FROM

• A critical lack of supply is a well acknowledged characteristic of the housing market in this country. Previous governments have pledged to build more; but planning and financial obstacles have often got in the way.

• Labour have pledged to build 1.5 million homes in their first 5 years. This equates to 300,000 a year; in parallel with prior Conservative pledges.

• Support for ‘Build 300,000 homes a year’ rides high as a Top 10 issue for voters (Redfield & Wilton Strategies poll on 21st June) reflecting a positive shift in sentiment and more widespread understanding that more homes need to be delivered.

• An increased supply of homes is critical for affordability for a generation of renters and would-be buyers. Labour certainly has ambitious plans to reform planning, build a new generation of towns, devolve stronger powers to mayors and fast track approval for urban brownfield development.

Solar Panel Cleaning

Ensure that IT Security is High on Your Holiday Check List

Solar Panel Bird Proofing

Holiday time is here at last! Maybe a ‘staycation’ or an overseas trip is on the cards? But how do you look after those devices like laptops and PCs that will most likely be staying at home?

Home insurance and/or travel insurance will cover most cases of theft or accidental damage (be sure to check your policy) but it's still a good practice to take a few simple steps to make sure your devices are as safe as they can be.

• Backup your devices. It’s so simple and it should be something you do regularly anyway. Make it a priority to get everything backed up before you leave. Accidents happen and it’s easy to lose all your important data with just the slip of a hand. Don't just back up to the cloud; consider having a backup to a separate hard drive.

• Update your software. Making sure you have up-to-date security software is paramount!

• Secure your devices. Use a PIN, pattern lock or 2-factor authentication. Don’t forget to add security authentication to your laptops and PCs and please think carefully about any passwords you are using.

• Be wary of which Wi-Fi you connect to. It's tempting to connect to any free Wi-Fi when you’re away and save using up your valuable data allowance but really think carefully before connecting to unsecured public Wi-Fi. There’s a huge risk that your devices could be hacked, sensitive data stolen or get infected with malware.

• Be careful what you share on social media. If you make your photos public, any thieves will be able to take advantage of your absence. Why not check who sees your posts and consider making it private to friends only, so you know only those you trust can see where you are?

Safe Local Trades member Ben from File Genie and his team can offer a wealth of advice and support whether updating your software and backing up your devices or if you think your device is not operating correctly. Get in touch here www.safelocaltrades.com/PE/peterborough/

Financial Planning under a Labour Government

In this month’s edition, I want to address some of the key financial planning considerations now that we have a new Labour government. With new policies and potential changes on the horizon, it's important to reassess and adjust your financial plans accordingly.

Tax Change and Your Investments

One of the significant changes the new Labour government might introduce is tax reform, particularly targeting higher earners and capital gains. If you have investments, it's crucial to stay informed about potential changes to Capital Gains Tax and dividend taxation.

To mitigate potential tax hikes, consider using your annual ISA allowance to shield your investments from tax. With a £20,000 annual limit, ISAs are a great place for tax-efficient investing. Additionally, reviewing your investment strategy and considering tax-efficient funds or tax-relief options could be beneficial.

Pension Planning

Labour's approach to pensions might include revisiting the state pension age and reviewing tax-relief on pension contributions, especially for higher earners. Making use of your pension contributions within the current tax-relief framework could be a wise move.

The annual allowance stands at £60,000 or total annual earnings, whichever is lower, and contributing now could lock in valuable tax-relief. You may also wish to consider diversifying your retirement savings, potentially incorporating other investment vehicles to ensure a well-rounded retirement plan.

* A pension cannot typically be accessed until age 55 (57 from April 2028). Investments carry risk.

Property Market

Labour has historically focused on housing reforms, including increased support for first-time buyers and potential changes to property taxes. This could impact both property owners and prospective buyers.

If you’re planning to buy a property, staying informed about any new government schemes or changes to stamp duty is crucial. For existing property owners, particularly those with buy-to-let investments, it’s important to review your portfolio. Potential changes to tax-relief on mortgage interest or rent controls could affect your overall returns.

Inheritance Tax Planning

Labour may also review Inheritance Tax (IHT) policies, possibly tightening rules or adjusting thresholds. Reviewing your estate planning strategies is prudent. Making use of annual gift allowances, setting up trusts, and considering life insurance policies written in trust are effective ways to manage potential IHT liabilities.

Engaging with a financial planner to ensure your estate plan is robust and tax-efficient under potential new regulations is highly recommended.

Create ‘Kerb Appeal’ and Add Value to Your Home

This Holbeach-based firm are establishing a very impressive reputation for the quality of their work and the service they provide, across a wide area of South Lincolnshire and neighbouring counties. This can be clearly confirmed by the huge number of very favourable recommendations from satisfied customers on their website, www.lincolnshireresindrivesltd.co.uk, but especially on their Facebook pages.

Resin driveways are a long-lasting and easy-tomaintain option to transform the front of your home. An eco-friendly alternative, thanks to the non-toxic materials used, and available in a range of colours, a resin driveway is naturally draining, meaning no more puddles from heavy rainfall. How Does Politics Affect the Law?

This subject could produce many books. In simple terms, the law is inextricably linked with politics.

Politicians produce ‘statutes’ and ‘statutory instruments (legislation)’. When we were members of the European Union, ‘directives’ were passed, and they were implemented in this jurisdiction but no longer.

We are still affected by international agreements on crime, especially economic crime. Solicitors and barristers advise clients on the everchanging laws. That is why legal advice, even on a micro-scale in our own lives, is highly important to protect against risk.

● Employment Law is highly political. Some political parties believe that to obtain legal rights, you should be employed

for two years. Others believe it should be six or twelve months.

● Residential property is affected by Stamp Duty Land Tax which can go up and down.

● Capital Gains Tax can be affecting subjects such as wills, probate and divorce settlements. There are deadlines in responding to HMRC on transactions.

● Our treatment of road traffic and risk, or even smoking, can be affected by our political choices. Do people think a 20mph speed limit or banning certain ages from buying cigarettes is likely to save lives?

We can see how in history the view has changed. In the 1950s,

smoking was encouraged. In the 1980s, there were many more national speed limits especially in our villages.

● Inheritance Tax is another area where sometimes there are very generous allowances to estates, due to the allowances that are available to some clients. This is a definite political choice, since it is open to politicians to change this if they wish.

● The laws regarding people living in houses without being married were historically affected by Case Law. Judges have tried to restrict such claims to a certain extent, but claims can still occur in certain instances.

BESPOKE TREATMENTS AVAILABLE

What are Skin Boosters!

Skin boosters are injectables that improve skin texture, elasticity, hydration and overall appearance. They can stimulate collagen production, improving fine lines and wrinkles. Treatments involve injecting hyaluronic acid (a soft, gel-like substance), under the skin which then improves the skin’s elasticity and firmness. They are extremely good at improving hydration and can be used on all types of skin areas and skin types. The most common areas to treat are the face, neck, cheek and hands.

What is Profhilo?

Profhilo is an injectable rejuvenation treatment and is one that is loved by celebrities, and, unlike dermal fillers, it is not designed to add volume to the skin or restrict movement in the facial muscles. It is often called the ‘five-point facelift’ as the injections are given in five particular places each side of the face which then all flow together. As we age, the skin naturally loses its firmness, and most people begin to see the effects of hyaluronic acid depletion as they reach their thirties. Profhilo is the perfect treatment for anyone looking to counteract this. It can also be used to improve the appearance of the skin around the neck, décolletage and hands.

To achieve the best, long-lasting results, two sessions of Profhilo are recommended, four weeks apart, and the best results will be visible four weeks after the second treatment.

TREATMENTS WE OFFER

Dermal fillers ✦ Lip fillers ✦ Bunny lines

Downturned corners of the mouth ✦ Gummy smiles

Profhilo (turkey neck) ✦ Hay fever injections

Fat dissolving ✦ Vitamin B12 injections

Anti-wrinkle treatments ✦ Hand rejuvenation

Smokers' lines ✦ Profhilo (five-point face lift)

Vitamin D injections ✦ Under eye treatments

Brow lift ✦ Cheek filler ✦ Excessive sweating ✦ Masseter Botox (teeth grinding) ✦

A maintenance session is then advised once every six months.

What is Seventy Hyal?

Seventy Hyal is also a version of a skin booster and, when choosing between Seventy Hyal and Profhilo, it’s crucial to consider your individual needs and goals. It again is injected into five points on the facial structure so that it can cover and reach the whole of the face. If you prioritise intense hydration and wrinkle reduction, Seventy Hyal is the ideal choice, but if you seek overall skin remodelling and enhanced texture, then Profhilo would be your preferred choice and is able to give a more comprehensive rejuvenation of the skin.

Cost is also a factor worth considering, as Seventy Hyal is a much more competitively priced choice as it’s almost half the price of the Profhilo and it would allow you to revisit the treatment on a more frequent basis.

Sports Performance and Mental Imagery

Imagine that by just thinking about exercise it strengthens your muscles, even if you don’t move an inch. But this is true; mental imagery not only activates the same brain regions as the actual movement but can also speed up the learning of a new skill.

Visualisation or mental imagery is a technique used by sports hypnotherapists and psychologists for years to improve athletic performance in the game. Successful golfers, tennis players, athletes, footballers, boxers, and many others agree that this technique gives them the competitive edge, mental awareness, motivation, and confidence to succeed.

“Strengthen your game by just using our imagination!”

Visualisation and rehearsal strengthen muscles, so by imagining you’re lifting weights in the gym, you can increase muscle strength by up to half as much as if you’re really doing it. It does this by sending electrical signals to the muscles making them stronger. So, you don’t have to move; it just happens by thinking about it.

We can imagine both internally and externally (third person view) but, by imagining internally, it can also create physiological responses such as changes in blood pressure, heart rate

and respiration. It can reinforce the circuits in our brain sending stronger signals to target muscles.

Mental imagery can be used with other things too, such as professional musicians who rehearse difficult parts of a musical piece by performing the music in their mind. It’s thought that mental rehearsal triggers the same motor, somatosensory, auditory, and emotional circuits as playing the real instrument.

Scientists say that mental training with no physical exercise can help improve voluntary muscle strength. This could help with rehabilitation for people who find it difficult or unsafe to participate in strength training; by learning to use their mind they may now be able to strengthen muscles.

Mental imagery is an easy way to help preserve and improve performance alongside physical practice, exercise, or getting out in your sport or specialism. And it is important to keep in mind that, like the real thing, mental training needs to be intensive and repeated, over and over again, to work. Hypnotherapy can help to achieve focus and visualisation to achieve your goals.

Golfer, Jack Nicklaus, once said, “I never hit a shot, not even in practice, without having a very sharp, in-focus picture of it in my head. First, I see the ball where I want it to finish, nice and white and sitting up high on the bright green grass.

Then the scene quickly changes, and I see the ball going there; its path, trajectory, and shape, even its behaviour on landing.”

Mind the Pension Gap

“NOW: Pensions” (an award-winning UK workplace pension provider) has recently published the 2024 gender pensions gap report which revealed that women retire on average with pension savings of £69,000, compared to £205,000 for men. Women face extra challenges when saving for retirement, such as a greater proportion working in lower paid and part-time jobs, which means that they have less to put into their pensions.

The report also showed that less than 30% of divorce settlements include pension sharing, leaving women more vulnerable to financial hardship.

If you are divorcing, the pension assets can be one of the most valuable, if not the most valuable, assets in the marriage. Every divorce case, unless the marriage has been very short and the parties are very young, should include a consideration of the pensions. Either party, not just wives, can risk losing out on their fair share of a valuable asset, if you don’t find out exactly what it is worth and include it together with the family home and other capital, for sharing.

Family Law specialists will be able to advise you on the value of pensions, which is particularly important if they are final salary/defined benefit schemes, and arrange a pension actuary report if needed. Consult a Family Law specialist for further advice if this affects you.

Prevention is better than cure We provide - prenuptial agreements, - cohabitation agreements

It’s the Holidays

Time to Make a Plan and Win One

Ilove the summer, and I love my holidays even more; just ask anyone who knows me. July and August are always a really interesting time for our business.

The good news is that less people die in the summer months (it really comes down to the warmer weather), so our probate team all get to enjoy some well-deserved downtime. But, for our consultants and our drafting teams, it is a different story.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to the summer and doing your planning. The first and most prevalent is that “it is sunny outside so nothing bad is going to happen so I can leave any planning for later”. This is a really popular option because the statistics show that two thirds of people don’t have a valid, up-to-date will. However, the most interesting thing for me must be the dozens of people every year who contact us and want their will written urgently as they are just about to fly away on holiday. It is always at short notice, (“we are away next week” is an oftheard refrain) and they are always convinced the plane is going to drop out of the sky!

Often, we can turn around documents in less than twenty-four hours if they are really urgent.

But of course, the best advice is to make your plans, (both for holidays and for life) well in advance. Avoid a rush and take the time to understand and get the right plans in place. That’s where we can help best, with professional advice from trained advisors who will help you to make the right decisions for you and your family.

You can call us at any time, but just for July and August we are offering any new client who signs up with us a chance to win a city break for two as a thank-you from W & P Legal.

Now the truth is you are probably at far more risk staying at home than you are taking a flight, but we appreciate that things can go wrong, so we always try to accommodate the nervous flyers that come to us to make their plans.

To stand a chance of winning, just call us on 01778 252301, book in with one of our team and get those plans sorted, once and for all.

Happy Holidays!

Wills

Why do I need a will?

Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate.

If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.

Lasting Powers of Attorney

What are they?

Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.

These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.

Probate

What is it?

When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.

We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.

Watch Out for Lions Roaming Around Bourne!

No, not those four-legged carnivorous animals found in Africa or in safari parks in the UK, but a group of hard-working volunteers who comprise The Bourne Lions Club! However, they need more Lions on the prowl.

Never heard of The Lions Club?

Lions Clubs International is a large, worldwide organisation that has been in existence for over one hundred years, established in the USA by a group of businessmen wishing to do more for their own local community. That same aim is prevalent today where Bourne Lions serves the town and surrounding areas, from Thurlby up to Rippingale. It has been in existence for almost fifty years and has seen many members come and go; they all have one thing in common, a desire to serve the community.

How

do we do this?

We are a charity, and we meet twice monthly and react to known needs in the community. We have a motto: “Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion.” There are people in the club who have been in the community many years and who, at times, pick up on things where the club could help. The councils and other organisations know we are here and sometimes point a ‘need’ in our direction.

We are also well-known for providing annual events such as our Family Fun Day and Santa’s Sleigh. Consequently, and being known for our “giving”, we will receive mailed requests for support. All requests are considered at our meetings, and we will endeavour to meet them, often requiring more information to ensure we are meeting genuine needs.

Could we do more?

Most certainly yes, but currently we have a rather low membership which makes supporting other events in our community difficult. This is a shame as we love to take our Bourne Lions bus to events as well as our tombola stall, where cuddly lion toys can be won! We need more members to maintain and increase the good work we are doing.

Is it worthwhile being a Lion?

Consider these opinions from existing Bourne Lions Club members:

● “Being part of Bourne Lions can be very rewarding; you use many skills learnt throughout your working life from computing to organisational.”

● “At times it has been a hard slog, but I have found it rewarding when we receive thanks from people we have helped over the years.”

● “It’s not just an organisation, it’s a family, united by a common goal: to serve those in need and uplift our community.”

Fancy Joining a Friendly, Successful Choir?

Then Try The Glebe Singers

The Glebe Singers, who will be celebrating their 25th birthday shortly, have just completed another very successful year of singing.

With performances over the past months at Langtoft, Bourne and Peakirk, together with entertaining residents at local care homes last Christmas, they are already receiving requests to perform in different venues throughout the area. The choir has gone from strength to strength in number over the year and every single member, whether long-standing or a more recent newcomer, has contributed to make the Glebe Singers the strong choir that it is today.

At their recent concerts, audiences were able to enjoy a wide range of music - from Rodgers and Hammerstein to Gershwin; Rachmaninov to Copland; and more traditional pieces, such as ‘Dance to Your Daddy’ and ‘The Wellerman’.

The choir can be found rehearsing on Wednesday evenings, 7.30pm - 9pm during school term time at The Green School (PE6 8DA - opposite St. Guthlac’s Church in Market Deeping). They are currently taking a well-deserved rest over the summer holidays but will be back there from September 4th.
