2 OCTOBER 2023 Bourne

Welcome to your October issue...

Atimely reminder that “Stoptober” is now upon us, a movement that has already driven well over one million ‘quit smoking attempts’ to date and is the biggest mass quit attempt in the country. It is based on research that shows that if you can stop smoking for twenty-eight days, you are five times more likely to stay smoke-free for good.

Why not give it a go this year? For some very useful information, try visiting www.healthypeterborough.org.uk. With the money you’ve saved then treat yourselves to a Christmas to remember – less than a hundred days from now! But before then, don’t forget to stock up for when those “Trick or Treaters” pay you a visit on Hallowe’en.

In addition to the prize for our Summer Hunt Competition, we were delighted to be able to offer a free full page to the Butterfield Centre, a most worthy cause.

Finally, remember to change your clocks (“Spring forward, Fall back”), as we lose the hour on Sunday October 29th.

No sooner have we recovered from the footballing Lionesses almost emulating the 1966 World Cup winners than our rugby heroes get the opportunity to almost repeat their 2003 triumph, when the tournament in France concludes on October 28th. If you’re wanting a winner, it’s perhaps a good time to claim a little Irish ancestry, to be on the safe side! Having just returned from Canada’s beautiful West Coast, there are so many fabulous memories. Amongst them are the witty burghers of Vancouver, whose stores carry such ‘pun-tastic’ names as “Brewed Awakening” (coffee shop), “Optom-Eyes” (optometrist) and “Shoes Wisely” (shoe shop). Not a patch on marvelling at the antics of the grizzly bears, humpback whales, sea otters and sea lions however! As I finally gave up on getting my favourite songs into the right sequence, I heard a voice, “Don’t worry dad, anyone can make a mixtape!”

Enjoy the read.

Morton School’s Early Years Provision

At Morton CE Primary School we are lucky to have two excellent Early Years rooms as part of our setting. Little Owls Nursery welcomes children from age 2 to 4 years and, when it is time to move onto Reception, our Hedgehogs class is ready to continue their learning journey.

We have worked really hard as a team to ensure that we can support children and families with the transitions between home, nursery and reception. Spending quality time with all the children in our care is our most important job and the best way to help each child know that they belong.

Just across the playground, Hedgehogs and Little Owls children spend time every day in our wonderful forest school nature area. This inviting ‘secret garden’ gives us unlimited opportunities to develop the children’s love of the outdoors. Even more valuable

interactions take place between friends and grown-ups whilst we are building bridges across a pretend river or developing a child’s idea of making fishing rods with sticks and string.

We currently have spaces in Little Owls and Hedgehogs and would love to meet new families and their children during our open day on Thursday November 2nd. Bookings can be made by contacting the school on 01778 570389 or enquiries@ morton.laat.co.uk If you are unable to attend, please do give us a call as we can organise individual tours for parents at most times during the week.

The”Shrosbree Connection”

The

At the opening ceremony, in front of a sizeable crowd of onlookers, the ribbon-cutting task fell to a Bourne resident, Chas Shrosbree, who is the Manager of water sports facilities provider, Activities Venture Ltd, at Tallington Lakes.

It was to Chas that former Town Clerk, Nelly Jacobs, turned when seeking a suitable ‘celebrity’ to open the skatepark, because both she and Chas were there right at the start of the mission to get a skatepark installed in the town, over twenty years ago! Chas was to spearhead the long campaign for several years, raising awareness and funds, but the eventual success of the project was down to many more enthusiastic and hard-working volunteers, to whom Bourne owes a considerable debt of gratitude.

At that time, Chas and wife Lesley’s eldest son, Arran was beginning to make giant strides in the world of BMX racing and the idea of there one day being a purpose-built ‘multi-wheeled sports facility’ in Bourne began to materialise, as several like-minded people began to think the same.

As Chas explains, “The motivation for me to approach the council was that I saw the fun, development, skills etc Arran and his friend got from riding their bikes racing, at skateparks and trails. And although Bourne had lots to offer young people with the parks, wood, football, tennis

etc, there wasn’t anything for this demographic – which also included skateboarders. So, I approached the council at one of their meetings and the ball started rolling – very, very slowly!”

Since an early age, both Arran and his brother Mark have been very keen cyclists, particularly ‘off-road’, and would spend hours in Bourne Woods. Arran saw his first BMX racing aged eight, at Peterborough Phantoms BMX Club, loved it and began to participate in the sport for many years, progressing to be national champion twice, British champion three times and, at one time, ranked seventh in Europe. He was part of British Cycling’s inaugural ‘BMX Talent Team’ when BMX was introduced into the Olympics in 2008.

Throughout his early teens, Arran raced all over the UK and in Europe, before going on a road trip to the USA at the age of fourteen, racing and riding skate parks. The seed was sown … Arran loved America and so saved up for many more trips, culminating in him moving to the state of Colorado in The Rockies in 2017. Now into his thirties, Arran loves the mountain lifestyle, (skiing, mountaineering, climbing, and riding bikes). Presently, he is Chief Operating Officer for a camper van manufacturer in Rifle, Colorado, spending his weekends actively pursuing said activities all over Colorado and neighbouring states in his van!

Visit their website www.dmvans.com and you can see why it holds slightly more of an appeal than might Bourne Woods for outdoor adventuring!

6 OCTOBER 2023 Bourne
long-awaited opening of Bourne’s latest sports facility, the Dimension Skatepark (otherwise known as a ‘Multi-wheeled Sports Facility’), took place on Sunday August 20th.

New School Year : New Play Equipment

It is so good to be back and welcoming our children back into our school. They have started the term amazingly well with fantastic attitudes to the learning and showing all our school values in helping one another.

Our new Reception children have done an amazing job and have fitted in brilliantly to our family at Edenham, quickly becoming comfortable in their learning environment, getting to know all the adults in school and making friends with pupils in all our other years. Children have especially enjoyed exploring the new playground resources that we surprised them with on the first day of term!

It is now that we look to September 2024. If your child is starting school next September, please contact us to arrange a family tour at a time convenient for you where you will be able to see what we get up to and spend time with our Headteacher who can answer any questions you may have.

You can either call us on 01778 591207 or email us using the address: Edenham.enquiries@edenham.laat.co.uk.

Kingsbridge is on the edge - unprecedented industrial change sweeps the land, making the lives of the workers in Kingsbridge’s prosperous cloth mills a misery.

Finding Bear

The Figurine

When Helena inherits her grandparents’ apartment in Athens, she is overwhelmed with memories of the summers she spent there as a child, when Greece was under a brutal military dictatorship. Her remote, cruel grandfather was one of the regime’s generals and as she sifts through the dusty rooms, Helena discovers an array of valuable objects and antiquities.

Helena’s desire to find answers about her heritage dovetails with a growing curiosity for archaeology, ignited by a summer spent with volunteers on a dig on an Aegean island. Their finds fuel her determination to protect the precious fragments recovered from the baked earth – and to understand the origins of her grandfather’s collection.

The unmissable follow-up to “The Last Bear”, beautifully illustrated by Levi Pinfold and perfect for readers 8+. April Wood has returned from her adventure on Bear Island but can’t stop thinking about Bear. When she hears that a polar bear has been shot and injured in Svalbard, she’s convinced it’s her friend and persuades her dad to travel with her to the northernmost reaches of the Arctic.

But along the way, she discovers much more than she bargained for – a tiny polar bear cub, desperately in need of her help. In freezing temperatures, April must navigate the dangerous Arctic terrain and face her deepest fears if she’s to save him.

Don’t Give in to the Winter Blues!

The sunshine has upped and left us, and we are now faced with autumn and winter setting in, but that’s no reason to hibernate and not get out and about. Here at Deepin Aesthetics, our job is to keep you looking and feeling your best so that you want to keep socialising and look forward to the approaching party season.

We offer anti-wrinkle treatments for either the forehead, the frown lines or in the crow’s feet area at the side of the eyes, so there is a choice of how many areas you would like to treat. The injections are painfree and help to improve the appearance of the skin by relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles to form. The process should be repeated every three months to maintain results but can be spaced out for longer periods after around two years. These injections can also be used to treat migraine headaches, crease lines at the side of the nose, to slim down jawlines, reduce excessive sweating, and to relax the muscle responsible for clenching teeth.

Dermal fillers for the face, forehead and downturned mouth are used to fill lines and wrinkles and to add volume to the cheek and lip area. They are not

Most dermal fillers contain a substance called hyaluronic acid which is found naturally in our skin so is completely safe to use. The treatments are almost pain-free and only take about twenty to thirty minutes to carry out and the results are extremely effective and can be seen almost immediately. They are the fastest acting and longest lasting of all the treatments we do and represent the greatest value for your money.

Life Without Smoking!

any people ask me if hypnotherapy can help them give up smoking. Well, hypnotherapy has the reputation for being the best way to quit smoking. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help someone who is determined to quit smoking for good by using your imagination to create a nonsmoking future which is positive, empowering and allows you to take control, not only of your smoking habits but of your life.

Benefits of stopping smoking are amazing:

● Have a decreased chance of having a heart attack after just twenty-four hours of stopping.

● No longer be taking in 4,500 celldestroying chemicals.

● You will learn to control cravings.

● Have more energy.

● Learn to control stress.

● Your skin will improve its appearance.

● You will feel fitter and healthier.

● Reduce the risk of developing illness.

● No longer smell of tobacco.

● You will enjoy the taste of food more.

● Improve your breathing and fitness levels.

● You will feel happier, more confident and in more control.

● Improve fertility levels.

● Save money and spend money on things which can improve your quality of life rather than undermine it.

● You will no longer smell of smoke.

● You will no longer endanger those around you.

The stop smoking hypnotherapy session works by first explaining why the brain fools us into thinking it is acceptable to smoke. The hypnosis part of the stop smoking treatment is a key stage to cementing the change during which the client experiences around 45 minutes of hypnosis.

During the hypnosis process the subconscious mind effectively “rewires” itself to help the person’s willpower and commitment to smoking cessation.

The stop smoking hypnotherapy formula works, regardless of how many cigarettes you smoke or how long you have been smoking. The treatment is tailored to you as an individual, so you can get the best out of your life and helps you to realise your full potential, in a relaxed comfortable environment.

Give your lungs a rest and stop TODAY!

MFR and Connective Tissue?

ello again, it’s Heidi Marshall. In the last few issues of Discovering magazine, I’ve introduced you to some of the types of bodywork that I have been trained in. This month I’d like to delve into the world of fascia/ connective tissue and MFR. Have you heard of MFR? Myofascial Release? Fascia or connective tissue?

Fascia (or connective tissue) is a term that’s been thrown around for years in the world of bodywork. Back when I first started my massage career, little was known about fascia. It was just explained away as a thin layer of tissue that surrounded all our internal organs and muscles like filler.

So much more has been discovered about fascia/connective tissue. We now know that it is its own system in the body, like our nervous system, and it supports you and keeps you stable. Fascia is made up of elastin, collagen and other fibres that are bathed in cellular fluid.

It communicates with the brain, is adaptable, and surrounds and creates separation between every muscle, bone, nerve, and organ.

It is everywhere and exists as one continuous structure, head to toe with no interruption. There is more connective tissue in your body than anything else. Keeping it hydrated is key to it being able to do its job of support and protection.

MFR or Myofascial Release by John F. Barnes

is a gentle technique that involves applying sustained pressure, without lotion or oil, to help reduce or eliminate pain and bring back motion by elongating the fascia.

Trauma, accidents, surgery, inflammation, and postural habits can cause fascia to become solidified and shortened. MFR helps bring back hydration to your fascial system so that it can support and allow flexibility and movement.

Some issues that MFR can help with:

Back pain, bursitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, headaches/ migraines, neck pain, plantar fasciitis, sciatica, TMJ (temporomandibular joint dysfunction) syndrome, whiplash.

So, please give me a call if you have any questions and/or want to schedule a session with me. I hope to hear from you soon.

Advice Worth Hearing!

October is Audiology Awareness Month

You probably have regular check-ups at the dentist and the opticians, but when did you last have your hearing tested?

Hearing loss usually occurs gradually and can be an inconvenience. It can cause embarrassment, depression, isolation, and has been linked to mental health issues. The ability to hear sound is one of the most important senses yet, unlike vision and teeth, it is often taken for granted.

Typical indicators include asking people to repeat themselves, struggling to hear in noisy environments, confusing words or misunderstanding what’s being said in conversation, or having to turn the television up. If you can identify with any of these, then it is important to book a hearing assessment with someone like Sound Advice Hearing, to determine whether you have a hearing loss or not.

Sound Advice Hearing are a local independent family business providing impartial advice and who

have been helping people to hear for over eighty-five years. They provide FREE hearing tests in their centre and provide FREE hearing aid trials. Home visits can be arranged, if required.

The most important thing is not to ignore your hearing. In most cases, hearing deteriorates gradually, and it often affects people around you more than yourself. Wearing a hearing aid can make a real difference to your quality of life and to those around you.

It’s never too early to look after your hearing. Help yourself and those around you. So why not book a free assessment with Sound Advice Hearing now? It really can make a world of difference!

Meals on Wheels

Did you know that we can supply meals on wheels?

If you, your family member, or friend would benefit from this service, please call us on 01778 421422 between 9am - 2pm, Monday to Friday.

We operate seven days a week, and supply a hot main meal and dessert, delivered straight to your door. We can also supply an afternoon tea that would consist of a sandwich, fruit, and cake. The cost is £5.75 for the lunchtime meal and £3.50 for afternoon tea.

Our friendly team of volunteers will also check on the client’s welfare and report back to the office if they have any concerns (if a next-of-kin should be contacted or a doctor for example).

The Community Pantry

We are open to everyone, no matter what your financial position may be. Our aim is to reduce food waste that is still ‘in-date’ and perfectly edible that would otherwise be going to landfill.

We have food donated to us from various local supermarkets and suppliers. This comprises a mix of fresh fruit and vegetables, tins, bread, and general groceries.

Our opening hours are: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 1pm - 2pm

Volunteers

We always need new volunteers

– why not come and join our friendly and fabulous team?

Whether it be delivering the meals on wheels, helping in the community pantry, or collecting donated food … we need your help please.

“Who Will Look After Me?”

My thirteen-year-old self was sitting on the sofa one evening watching an episode of “Britain’s Got Talent”. I remember staring at the young boy on the television, belting out a song that was all about his mum, who had died very recently. He was now living with his nan and grandad; there was no mention of his dad, and I remember thinking to myself, “I don’t have a nan and grandad and my dad died when I was two, so it’s just me, my mum, and my sister. Who is going to look after me?”

Mum had fallen out with her two siblings a couple of years earlier and didn’t really have that many friends, but there was a really nice lady a couple of doors down that mum spent time with. “Who is going to look after me?” I asked myself again. Still, I watched and still, I pondered.

“I’ve got it! I know what I can do…I can go and live with my best friend! Phew, I can relax now.” At the end of the programme, mum came in and I asked her the same question. “Mum, who is going to look after me if anything happens to you?” Her response: “Nobody,

honey, by the time I die you’ll be married and have a family of your own! Nobody will need to look after you! You’ll have a good job, you’ll have friends, family and be financially stable. Please don’t worry.”

Six months down the road from that conversation and I was now, more than ever, worried about who was going to look after me. I soon found out. Mum passed away exactly six months, four days, and three hours after I watched that little boy singing about his mum. And there we were, my sister and myself sitting in the back of a stranger’s car, travelling to somebody else’s home. Who knows what my future will hold now?

Fast forward thirty years and I now work for a company that provides will writing and probate services. I was talking to my boss about what happened to me as a child, and I asked him, “Why would I be taken into care when my aunt was there to support us?”

He explained empathetically that, if my mum had made a will and put myself and my sister under the care of a guardian, when the inevitable happened and she died before we were adults, we would have known who would be taking care of us. It really was as simple as that.

If you’re a parent, and you haven’t made a will yet, or updated it to reflect your new family, now is the time. Please call us on 01778 252301 or email advice@wplegal.co.uk.

Unregistered Property and Potential Pitfalls

hen we think about purchasing, selling, or transferring a property, we often think about the big bundle of paper title deeds that are typically associated with proving property ownership.

While the Land Registration Act, 1925, introduced compulsory land registration, the first area to adhere to the new legislation was the town of Eastbourne in 1926, with the rest of the United Kingdom (UK) to follow by 1990.

The compulsory registration laws called for certain triggers; for example, a transfer in property would now require the property to be registered to a central, digital, database owned by the Land Registry that was accessible from anywhere in the world.

Yet, even though compulsory registration is still in effect to this day, around 15% of the UK’s properties continue to remain unregistered.

WThere are many risks associated with keeping your property unregistered. Property deeds are often brittle, old, documents which are prone to becoming damaged over time. Once damaged or lost, it becomes increasingly difficult to prove your ownership of the property without these documents. A lack of these important deeds can cause issues when trying to sell an unregistered property as, at the time of a sale, you would have to prove an unbroken chain of ownership going back fifteen years.

If an unbroken chain cannot be proven or if certain deeds are lost or missing, this may affect the marketability of the property and, ultimately, the price you can sell it for.

Another risk involved in keeping your property unregistered is the increased risk of fraud and security issues. Registering your property minimizes the risks of fraudsters being able to mortgage or sell your property without your knowledge.

If you have a property that you purchased prior to 1990, and are unsure of whether it is registered, or require a voluntary first registration, please contact us today for a no-obligation quote.

Securing a Buyer Before Christmas

● For buyers in the market now, the “move in, in time for Christmas” date is fast approaching.

● Properties are selling quicker than in the pre-pandemic period, with an average of fifty-five days to secure a buyer, down from sixty-two in July 2019.

● However, the time taken to complete a sale has risen In 2019, a survey of home movers found 55% of sales completed within three months; this fell to 28% in 2022. Early indications from the 2023 survey suggest that the proportion has remained similar to 2022.

● However, with four out of five sellers thinking it should take less than three months there is still a mismatch in expectations.

Is a “Good Divorce” possible?

The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau and his wife of eighteen years, Sophie, are separating. They made a public announcement which expressed their mutual intention to deal with what follows, in a very positive way. “After many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate. As always, we remain a close family with a deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build”. The couple have three school-age children.

Is it possible to have a good divorce?

Family lawyers would say, “Yes, it is!”

It does require some effort and commitment by both parties, however. There has to be a shared responsibility for the reason for the marriage breakdown, no matter who was the instigator, and you have to retain some respect for each other and show it, particularly where you have children of a vulnerable age.

Family lawyers are not therapists or marriage guidance counsellors; however, they can put you in touch with practitioners in this field, who could help you through all the conflicting emotions of separation. This would make it much easier to tackle the practical issues of sharing the matrimonial assets and time with the children.

Even if you are not instructing a solicitor in your divorce, they will be on hand to advise you about therapeutic support which could prove invaluable to you coping with the process.

College Players present ‘My Fair Lady’ at Stamford Arts Centre

The award-winning show sees James Duggins, Phoebe Candlin, Dan Stamp, Joanna Hingley, and Darren Rawnsley take the leading roles. With a cast of over twenty-five talented performers from around the area, striking sets, and beautiful costumes from Cinderella’s Grantham, along with a live band, this promises to be a fabulous family show.

The story…

London 1912: acclaimed phonetics professor and confirmed bachelor, Henry Higgins, agrees to a wager with his colleague, Colonel Pickering, that in just six months he can pass a Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, off as a duchess at the embassy ball. Through arduous training, day and night, Eliza learns how to speak English “properly,” and transforms into a lady, adored by all. Along the way she bewitches young Freddy Einsford-Hill and convinces a supposed linguistics expert that she is royalty. But once the wager has been won what is to become of Eliza? Will her Cockney friends even recognise her?

“My Fair Lady” is a beautiful musical about class, expectation and the unexpected. Full of glorious costumes and toe-tapping songs, including “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly”, “With a Little Bit of Luck”, and “The Rain in Spain”, “My Fair Lady” is full of charm, romance, and wit, and will leave you wanting to ‘dance all night’!

Wills

Why do I need a will?

Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate.

If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.

Lasting Powers of Attorney

What are they?

Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.

These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.

Probate

What is it?

When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.

We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.

How Three Little Words Could Make a Big Difference to Your Online Security

We all know how frustrating it can be when we set up a new online account; having to create, and remember, a new password. While the temptation is to use the same password on multiple accounts, in reality this will increase the chances of being hacked. Weak passwords can be cracked in seconds. The longer and more unusual your password is, the harder it is for a cyber-criminal to crack. It is much better to concoct passwords for online accounts that are made up of three random words as opposed to creating complex variations of letters, numbers and symbols, government experts have said. Advice from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is to make your password difficult to crack is by combining three random words to create a password (for example applefishchair). Or you could use an online password manager app, which can create strong passwords for you (and remember them). But if you want to write your password down, that’s also fine, provided you keep it somewhere safe. Top tips on creating passwords:

1. Avoid the most common passwords that criminals can easily guess (like ‘password’ or a succession of numbers). You should also avoid creating passwords from significant dates (like your birthday), or from your favourite sports team, or by using family and pet names. Most of these details can be found within your social media profile.

2. If you’re thinking of changing certain characters in your password (so swapping the letter ‘o' with a zero, for example), you should know that cyber criminals know these tricks as well.

3. Passwords made from multiple words will generally be longer than passwords made from a single word. Length is a common (and recommended) requirement for passwords and many of us try and lengthen the password by adding a symbol at the end of it. Again, these can be predictable but by combining words –your passphrase should be long enough.

4. Stereotypically, the password is a single dictionary word or name, with predictable character replacements. By recommending multiple words the NCSC says it immediately challenges that perception and encourages a range of passwords that have not previously been considered – making them not only novel and effective, but unique to the user.

Smalley Hot Tub Services Ltd: A Happy Covid Lockdown Story!

One warm evening during the Covid lockdown in March 2020, Chris and

Justine Smalley were in their hot tub, wondering just how being furloughed from a seventeen-year career in the Royal Navy would affect Chris and his family.

As a graduate engineer, Chris had fixed everything from air defence systems to ships’ radar systems... and, yes, he had also repaired their own hot tub! This was their ‘light bulb moment’ and Smalley Hot Tub Services Ltd was born! Over the next two years, the business grew to a point where repairs on all makes and models of inflatable tub, and also acrylic tubs, were being made. In August, the family left the Royal Navy behind, moving to Pinchbeck, and to large premises, from where this flourishing business now operates, with aspirations to include a showroom before long.

Smalley Hot Tub Services offer a wide range of services, all underlain by a friendly, customercentred approach. These include hot tub and liner repairs, pump servicing and replacement, and diagnosing electrical faults, besides being a main dealer for several firms such as Catalina Spas and Earth Spas.

They have a very strong online offering and can supply chemicals, swimming pools, barbecues and so much more for the great outdoors, from their “One Stop Shop”.

Justine and Chris pride themselves on the highest standards, good workmanship, and honesty, putting customers first above everything else.

WE HAVE A WINNER!

This is Jack Todd from Morton receiving his £50 prize money for having won our August Seaside Treasure Hunt Competition. Jack was not only very excited to have won, as he enters all the Discovering Bourne competitions, but was also particularly pleased that it was this one that he won and not the Easter one, where the prize was the “Chocolate Explosion”!

He plans to spend his winnings on some Lego instead.

Words from the Mayor

The last month has been very enjoyable. I was so happy to be invited to Abbey Court Care Home to draw their raffle and enjoy their Summer Fete. I then had the honour of attending the opening of the Dimension Skatepark. It was great to chat to the various skaters, BMX riders and scooter riders that turned up in great numbers.

On the following evening I saw the setting up of the Ladies Circle of the Round Table. This event was well attended, and I met the National President, Laura who had been visiting all the 68 Circles across the country in seven days.

Next came the Willow’s Nursing Home in Rippingale where we spent a very pleasant afternoon participating in a Bollywood themed party, with Indian goodies for tea. On September 3rd, we went to a Civic Service at St Botolph’s Church in Boston, and it was lovely to meet many other Mayors and civic leaders.

The First English Americans

In 1606, a local man, John Dods joined three perilously small ships from England heading for America. They nosed around the sunken river estuaries of Chesapeake Bay and chose an anchorage forty miles inland to settle. It was a brilliant spot for water communications and for self-defence. They wanted to keep out of the Spaniards’ hair. The dominant European power already had colonies in Florida; the French were active in Quebec; the Dutch up and down the River Hudson. Dods, a labourer from Aslackby near Bourne, has a very good claim to be a founder of the United States, years before the more famous Mayflower Puritan settlers. Dods was one of only three of the original cohort of 104 to survive in Virginia until the Muster of 1624. As his Captain, John Smith put it, “In Virginia, a plain soldier that can use of pickaxe

and a spade is better than five Knights.”

The 14,000 Powhatan residents, a sophisticated lot, were familiar with Spanish vessels and saw the English arrivals as both a security threat and a trading opportunity. They were amused by the English failure to wash daily, but coveted their metal hatchets, invaluable in this well-wooded country. The Powhatan had left the site of Jamestown empty because it was a malarial swamp without drinking water or good land.

The English settlement came to grief, brought low by conflicting objectives, disease, resupply disappointments, too many ‘Gentlemen’, and too few like John Dods. According to Time Team, “They sank to cannibalism when besieged. They clung on when earlier attempts at settlement had vanished, packed up or been routed. They were therefore the first English Americans.”

The arrival of women from England in “bride ships” effected the broader transition from Elizabethan state-sponsored piracy to a realistic prospect of settler colonialism, carried out in the first place by Joint Stock companies. King James I authorised the Virginia Company in return for a 20% cut of the booty. The gold and silver was just a dream. A Crown Colony came later in 1624.

The most famous Virginian is Rebecca Rolfe, married to tobacco planter, John Rolfe of Heacham, North Norfolk. Better known as Pocahontas, she was a daughter of the paramount Powhatan. Their trip to England was carefully orchestrated to promote investment and recruitment to the struggling Virginia Company. She was given the full ‘Princess’ treatment to drum up attention at Court. The mythologising will never end.

The photo shows the four claims made for Jamestown on its 350th anniversary in 1957. These days, Jamestown is a high-class historical reconstruction and visitor attraction. All four claims chiselled in the stone are debatable, but we can hardly scoff at American foundation myths, when we have so many of our own!
