No sooner do we get to feel some welcome sun on our faces, (once it has stopped raining!) than we find ourselves entering autumn this month. At this rate, it will be Christmas before you can say, “Don’t mention the ‘C’ word!”

I seem to recall that September “back-to-school time” often meant the sunshine accompanying the pupils and teachers as the new term began. I hope your summer break went to plan and you were all able to make the most of it. I trust our little people made it a summer to remember for all parents, and stress levels didn’t get too high! Now … breathe!!! As ever, I send big thanks to all our contributors, advertisers, and our editorial team, who continue their unwavering support to ensure that, each month, your “favourite freebie” magazine brings you the very best.

In early July, the Tiree Music Festival had to be cancelled. Campers, glampers, visitors and vendors at the Scottish Hebridean island venue were evacuated, as torrential rain was forecast throughout the weekend. Wouldn’t you just know that the headline act happened to be Wet, Wet, Wet, (no doubt ready to perform “Flood is All Around”)?

This summer has seen many sporting highlights with The Ashes, both men and women, providing some magical moments, but now we salute the “roarsome” Lionesses. By the time this is with you, they may well have “put the pain in Spain” (to quote the good Doctor J. C. Clarke!) And finally, just think … where would we be without hypothetical questions?

A Spanish magician tells the audience he will disappear on the count of three. He says, “Uno, dos…” and whoosh, he disappeared without a tres. Enjoy the read.

Confessions

of a Forty-Something F##k Up

Nell’s back. Her life still isn’t going to plan. And she’s still asking the big questions and getting none of the answers, like, for example: When all else fails, will celebrity-scented candles, smashed avocados and Instagram filters save us?

In this hilarious, un-put-downable follow-up to the bestselling “Confessions of a Forty-Something F##k Up”, there are laugh-out-loud lessons to be learned, truths to be told, adventures to go on and joys to discover. But first, Nell has some more confessions .

Like every seventeen-year-old boy, Joe has one eye on his studies, the other on his social life. He’s looking ahead to a gap year before university, when his teacher (attractive, mid-thirties), takes an interest in him. It seems like a fantasy come true.

For his final two years at school, he is bound to her, a woman twice his age, in an increasingly tangled web of coercion, sex and lies. Their affair, a product of complex grooming and a shocking abuse of authority, is played out in the corridors of one of Britain’s major private schools. Thirty years on, this is Joe’s gripping record of the illicit relationship that dominated his adolescence and dictated the course of his life.

Wolf Road

An epic new children’s novel from bestselling author, academic and broadcaster, Professor Alice Roberts. Tuuli is a prehistoric girl, travelling with her tribe, making camp, hunting for food, and protecting themselves against the many hazards that the climate throws at them. Tuuli spots a strange boy lurking outside their camp.

He is from another tribe, sent to find safer ground and, as he and Tuuli strike up an unlikely friendship, they set out on a journey that will impact the rest of human history. A vast adventure with a very human heart, full of wild animals, huge scenery and heart-stopping danger and inspired by real anthropological discoveries.

How Can Massage Cupping Help You?

Hi, I’m Heidi Marshall, CMT, from Illinois in the States. I introduced myself in last month’s issue. In it, I briefly described some of the therapies that I have been trained in and use in my sessions with clients. This month, I’d like to expand on one of the therapies that I use…Massage Cupping.

Cupping has roots in Ancient Egypt and China. There are also connections of cupping in Greece and Ancient Islamic texts. It then spread to Europe around the 14th century. It was used for treating such ailments as menstrual imbalance, loss of appetite, fever, pain, and vertigo.

I was trained in Massage Cupping by Anita J. Shannon. Massage Cupping is different from what most think of when they hear those words. It isn’t big, red circles left on your body, looking like you lost a fight with an octopus! It is an evolution of cupping. It uses suction and negative pressure to release tight muscles, reduce scarring and adhesions, reduce oedema, open tissues, and bring in fluids, and help the lymph system to “take out the trash” and move nutrients throughout the body. I also use it as a diagnostic tool. Moving the cup along the body can show me areas that are tight, stuck, and/or the tissue brought into the cup may change colour indicating old blood underneath the surface.

I use a machine to create the suction for me with glass and polycarbonate cups. The application of lotion or oil is used to create a seal with the cups and help with smooth gliding. It can be used on the back, neck, face, limbs, hands, and

feet. Massage Cupping creates an opening of the tissues and is a nice option for someone who is sensitive to deep pressure but needs deep work. It is also sedating to the nervous system. Massage Cupping draws inflammation out, does not irritate the skin, opens the pores (allowing for easier absorption of topical oils or analgesics), brings fresh blood into an area to start healing, and moves out toxins.

The results are often accumulative. I have had great success working with scars/adhesions, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and increasing one’s range of motion. It is safe for most, with an awareness and gentleness used for children, the elderly, diabetics, and those on blood thinners.

It can be very profound and powerful. As with all bodywork, don’t be surprised if there is emotional release, soreness, perhaps feeling a bit sick, and/or feeling dehydrated. Drinking water after your session, staying warm, and doing some very light movement/stretching all help with integrating the session.

Come and see how Massage Cupping can help you. Please call me with any questions and to book your session.

Why Have Biotin Injections?

Biotin, also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H, is a type of B-complex vitamin that occurs naturally in a variety of foods such as egg yolks, milk, dairy, nuts, avocados and ‘organ meats’ like liver.

Biotin helps support a healthy nervous system and improves the protein that makes up hair, skin, and nails. It is widely known to help with hair growth, hair structure and thickness, as well as a decrease in hair loss. Nail thickness is also improved by up to 25% and it can also decrease nail breakage and splitting. The other main benefit is that it improves a variety of skin conditions such as acne and eczema and overall promotes healthy, glowing skin.

As an additional bonus, biotin also increases metabolism and speeds up weight loss which can’t be bad!!! The vitamin is water soluble, therefore it is not easily stored in the body, and any excess is passed through the system and regular intake is necessary, so no deficiency occurs.

Like most supplements, it is not easily absorbed orally so the intramuscular injections again have been proven far more effective in increasing biotin levels. The treatment is a quick fifteen-minute appointment and is pain-free and we recommend a course of six, once a week, to get your levels where they need to be.

Raising Funds for Blood Cancer Research

Coffee Morning:

Thursday September 7th (10am – 1pm)

The venue is Bourne Cricket Club, Abbey Road, Bourne PE10 9EN, where car parking is available. Dr. Michael and Margaret McGregor, who are both in their ninetieth year, have been fundraising for Blood Cancer since the death of their son, John in 1983.

In that time, they have raised over £130,000. They started with a small coffee morning in their own home and then have moved to various venues in Bourne, all with the same aim to support Blood Cancer and raise funds for research in order that others shouldn’t suffer.

The morning will have, in addition to coffee and tea, the following stalls: Tombola, Jewellery, Plants, Bottles, Jig saws, Books, Preserves and Cakes, Cards and a Raffle.

Horse Racing Evening

Saturday September 23rd

In recent years, Taff Roberts, one of the Group’s helpers, died of a Blood Cancer and fundraising has also been in memory of him.

Taff’s daughter, Louise is organising an indoor horse racing evening and she is looking for lots of support. Horses, along with tickets for the evening, can be purchased in advance at £3 a horse and £3 entry fee, and are available from Glen on 07711 921778 or 01778 423148, and Mary on 07951 520317.

The venue is Bourne Masonic Lodge, Roman Bank off Cherryholt Road, Bourne PE10 9LQ, and the doors open at 6.30pm, for the first race at 7o’clock. Feel free to bring your own nibbles and drinks.

Blood Cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the UK with over 41,000 people being diagnosed with it every year. There are about 250,000 people living with blood cancer in the UK.1 in every 16 men and 1 in every 22 women will develop it at some point in their lives. Back in 1960, when the charity was founded, 1 in 10 children diagnosed with the most common type – Leukaemia, survived, now 8 out of 10 children survive.

The research is assisted by fundraising, and this is why the people of Bourne have been supporting the McGregors in their quest to help find a cure.

Bourne Academy Sixth Form Celebrate Outstanding Exam Results

Students at Bourne Academy Sixth Form have been celebrating their achievements with an outstanding set of exam results, where 59% of A-level and BTEC qualifications were the equivalent of grade A* to A. The Sixth Form at Bourne Academy offers different study pathways where students can study A-levels only, BTECs only, or a combination of both.

The number of A* to A grades achieved at A-level is higher than in 2019, which is the last year grades were awarded without any adjustment due to the Covid pandemic. There were notable successes for specific A-level subjects, with 77% of History students achieving A* to B and 71% of Psychology students achieving A* to B.

For the BTEC qualifications, an outstanding 76% of grades achieved were Distinction* or Distinction (equivalent to A* or A grade at A-level), with 30% being at the highest possible Distinction* grade. 100% of students studying IT & Computing and Health & Social Care achieved Distinction* or Distinction. Overall, the Sixth Form recorded a 99% pass rate across all exams with 81% of student grades achieved being equivalent to A* to C grades.

Mr Matt Sammy, Head of School at Bourne Academy, said, “It has been wonderful to celebrate the successes with students. I would like to thank the Sixth Form team and teaching staff for all their advice, guidance, and outstanding teaching. The vast majority of students have achieved their first-choice university or apprenticeship offers.”

Motivation with Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy can help with motivation. Most of us start with good intentions to make changes - take up exercise, stop smoking, or change our lives in one way or another, only to find that the motivation has gone out of the window some weeks later.

So, what’s the key to maintaining motivation? What really drives us to make positive changes? Some theories suggest motivation is a sort of positive reward for achieving something, as in, “If I lose weight, I will be confident on the beach”. Other theories suggest an opposite effect; if we DON’T do something, then something negative might happen, for example, “I had better lose weight or I will get diabetes like my mum did”.

So, thinking of positive outcomes or goals generally motivates us more than negative outcomes, but then why do so many of us fail to fulfil our goals, even when we can see that we are going to benefit from completing what we set out to do?

There are many reasons why. Sometimes, it’s just about getting our goal right in the first place. Goal setting theory suggests we may all have some form of drive to reach an end goal, but the effectiveness of this depends on three main things: how far away that goal is; how hard it is to achieve that goal; and how clearly it is defined.

The Beardwood Practice specialises in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy which is a modern, research-based combination of psychotherapy and hypnosis, aimed at encouraging clients to focus on how they want things to be. We work with our clients to help them set their own realistic goals. We encourage them to break things down into smaller chunks or mini goals, so progress can be measured and it’s easier to see the movement forward. This is a great motivator, as there is nothing like seeing your own progress to help you move towards your goal, and that enables clients to maintain their motivation well into the future.

The “New Romantics”?

WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD

Whether Classical or more electronic, there are different musical meanings to the above expression. As a Family Lawyer of some thirty or more years, it is interesting how times have changed. The writer is naturally optimistic and traditional outside of work duties, but is fully aware that, however “romantic” society and individuals may be, there are risks in relationships.

If we take the general figure of a “successful relationship”, the number which survives until death is only around 56%, meaning that around 44% do not, however optimistic things were in the beginning! It is good sense and valuable for all our rights to take advice on the purchase of property and how it should be held. Should there be a Deed of Beneficial Interest setting out what happens on a fall out? Do we prefer “Joint Tenants” to “Tenants in Common”? On the former, on a death the survivor

automatically takes the other’s share. On “Tenants in Common”, the shares are held to the benefit of the owner and pass, according to a will or the rules of intestacy.

In short:

● It is always advisable to know your rights and to make a will.

● It is sensible to understand your property rights and what happens if there is a falling out.

● Furthermore, understanding who we should trust in older age is essential. Should we make a Lasting Power of Attorney to safeguard our wishes? Who do we trust to act for us?

At Double and Megson, Bourne Office, we are always down-to-earth and keen to help. We are enthusiastic about what we do. Acting for sometimes three generations in a family we receive repeated instructions. We look forward to helping you with your legal matters. You need to take care of your rights and your business.

Haconby Chapel is a ‘listed building’, just twentyfour feet long by thirteen feet wide, and capable of holding one hundred people in the space of a small flat. Built in 1867, it hosted Baptists and Primitive Methodists.

From persecution as ‘dissenters’ in the seventeenth century, non-Conformism had a turbulent history. Theoretical toleration in law was met with all kinds of practical obstruction. It was “fissiparous”, meaning splits and realignments featured. Finding the resources to build your own chapel was a proud achievement.

Primitive Methodists showcased the three Rs: Ruin, Repentance and Redemption. Villagers would hear biblical preaching from their own kind. Tension would build. Testimony would be given. Spontaneous singing would begin. The cries and groans of the ‘penitents’ ushered to the front pew would be reinforced by their neighbours as their souls were saved on the spot, amid “shrieks that rent the air” and “the thudding and thumping of boots ‘till every fibre of the floor shudders.”

Many an Anglican parson had come to be seen as part of the gentry, even becoming magistrates with all the dread that implied about poaching. The squire and parson offered heavenly riches to come. The Primitives could provide euphoria in the here and now. The Primitives could also offer leadership positions to women, such as Elizabeth Moore of Welby who preached for decades and brought up three children as a widow.

Of course, the reality was complicated: “We comes to church in the morning to please you, Sir, and goes to chapel at night to save our souls.” One local curate complained of “an organised banditti of strolling Methodists and vociferating Ranters” [Nov 27th, 1820]. The Ranters (Primitives) lacked “the dignified deportment and calm devoutness” that the wellheeled were looking for.

The Revd Samuel Hopkinson of Morton with Haconby helpfully explained that Morton people “have always, time immemorial, been proverbially bad”. He forged a sly alliance with village roughs: “the inhabitants dropped their plans to assassinate one another in order to drive out the Methodists”. Primitive Methodists offered status and self-respect to the ploughman, a moral world resisting the parson’s coals and his wife’s charity, free from condescension from their ‘superiors’. Most leaders of the agricultural Trade Unions acquired their skills of literacy, record keeping and public speaking in non-Conformism, men such as Seth Brown of Bourne (born 1822), a Wesleyan Methodist preacher.

Residents in search of diversion and excitement might go to chapel denouncing the demon drink and then frequent the alehouse kitchen by way of comfort on dark evenings. For a vigorous minority, non-Conformism was the fulcrum of their social life and ‘temperance’ (no booze, or not much) would be taken very seriously.

Billingborough was the centre of a breakaway non-Conformist sect, led by Alfred Quinn. It attracted followers from all around the country. Open immersion baptism was carried out in a fen drain, which ran through Harvey Payne’s farm, dammed up to get the required depth. This was known as “dipping the Quinnites.”

SEPTEMBER 2023 25 Bourne ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ invest in the good life... Don't just take our word for it... OMG. What can we say, we were looking for a tranquil location in the UK close to the children when we stumbled on Tallington Lakes. All I can say is all of the staff are so welcoming and the lodges are simply beautiful and in a setting, you can only dream of. The buying process was quick and simple once the sale of our own home had gone through. We have now lived here for almost 6 months and are over the moon with our decision to buy here. PS. DAY EXCURSIONS

Barbara’s Story

The Competition and Markets Authority are very worried about a few things, but principally misleading advertising, where extremely low prices are used to get an appointment and then accompanied by high-pressure sales tactics. Sadly, this is all too common, as the following episode will confirm. Barbara is an acquaintance of my mum, in her late 70s and is widowed with two children.

A few months ago, she met mum in Tesco and told her that she was having her will written. Ever “on brand”, my mum asked if she was using us. Mum was quite surprised by the answer – “Oh no, they are far too expensive. I got an offer on Groupon, and they are going to write my will for £7.99. They are sending a man round next week to do it for me.” This led to quite a lot of grief for me over the next couple of days as mum quizzed me about our extortionate prices and why we couldn’t write wills for £7.99 for her friends.

Fast forward ten days, three days after Barbara’s will appointment. I get a phone call from mum, “Can you go and see Barbara, she is really upset, and she thinks she has done something stupid.” When your

mum asks a question like that, you can’t say no. So, I went to see Barbara.

It turns out that the man who went to see her to write a £7.99 will had spent over four hours with her, convincing her it was a great idea to sign her house over into a trust (with his firm as a trustee), write a will and put Lasting Powers of Attorney in place. Unfortunately, the cost wasn’t £7.99 but £3,500 for the will and the trust, plus £1,000 for the Lasting Power of Attorney. PLUS VAT!! And of course, he needed the money right away. Bewildered, Barbara wrote him a cheque for £5,400 and he finally left.

This happens all too often; the truth is you can’t write a will with proper professional advice for £7.99, £19.99, £27.00, or even £49.99 (all prices that you will see advertised online, or by people who stop you in the supermarket) and anyone who tells you that you can is being disingenuous. Take up one of these offers and you are likely to find yourself in a pressured sales pitch and parting with thousands of pounds.

There is a happy ending to the story. We complained to the company involved and got Barbara a full refund. Then we wrote her will and her Lasting Powers of Attorney. She paid us £769 all in.

If you want good professional advice at a reasonable price, call us 01778 252301. If you want to take your chances with a low-cost will advert … well don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Creating Beautiful, Contemporary Gardens

Based in Bourne, Lisa Wood Garden Design works on projects across much of South Lincolnshire and neighbouring counties. Their objective is to transform your outside areas into unique and functional living spaces that reflect your lifestyle, at the same time as complementing the natural setting and architecture of your home.

From intimate, urban courtyard spaces to large country gardens, their aim is to design beautiful and functional outdoor spaces that are an extension of you and your home.

Lisa Wood Garden Design offer a complete garden design service from concept to completion, aiming to make the process as easy and stress-free as possible. A typical garden design process involves six stages: the initial consultation; the site survey; the concept design; the masterplan; a planting

plan; and finally, the tendering process and site visits.

There are three alternatives to the full six-stage programme. The “design-only” service, for instance, enables you to use the bespoke garden design to build the garden in stages, as time and budget constraints allow.

Secondly, the “planting design” option provides scaled planting plans depicting the location, name and quantities of plants for you to source and plant yourself, or you can choose to use the firm’s plant sourcing services.

Finally, a lighting plan can be a valuable option to transform your outdoor space at night. The plan would indicate positions and types of installation in order for a qualified electrician to install them.

Do Renovations Really Pay Off?

But renovations are costly and may not pay off. So, what can you do to make a change without spending too much? Whilst it’s always a good idea to spruce up a property before it goes on the market, the key is to know exactly what changes really add value before making any big decisions.

Ways to increase value without spending thousands of pounds.

Kerb appeal

First impressions count, and if the exterior of a property looks unkempt, buyers are going to be put off before they’ve even stepped through the front door. Whilst tidying up, fixing broken pipes, and hiding bins immediately neatens a property up, what other changes could add value?

1. Paint or replace your front door for an immediate makeover.

2. Add some greenery with hanging baskets.

3. Repaint the exterior of the property to make it look fresh and welcoming.

4. Make sure the parking area is clearly marked out.

Redecorate

It might seem counterintuitive to spend money redecorating a home you don’t intend to live in, but freshening up a property’s paintwork can add serious value. Choose neutral colours to create a light, airy feeling, and pack away clutter to add space. Adding storage solutions such as shelves or cupboards can also make a property feel more spacious.

Extensions and/or loft conversions

If you want to add serious value and can spare the cash, consider extending your home or converting the loft or garage. Research has shown that adding an extra one or two bedrooms to a property can boost its value by around 20%, and even more if your property is in a city. Please note: extending or adding a dormer could require planning permission.

Kitchen focus

Replacing a kitchen is costly, but as one of the most used areas of a property, it could be worth the investment. Minor renovations to add the wow factor include painting or replacing cabinet doors, changing door handles, fixing superficial defects, descaling and thoroughly cleaning all appliances. Open shelving adds a sense of space, whilst new lighting could completely transform the whole appearance.

Garden makeover

You don’t need to completely redesign the garden to add value, but making sure it looks its best is a must. Hire a gardener for a one-off revamp if you don’t have the time (or patience) to do it yourself. Make sure buyers see the potential of the garden by adding furniture or a barbecue so they can imagine spending their summer in the sun.

The importance of Electrical Safety during summer storms

Summer storms can cause power outages and other electrical hazards. It’s essential to take steps to ensure your safety during these events.

Here are a few tips to help you stay safe during summer storms:

1 Unplug Electrical Devices: During a summer storm, lightning strikes can cause power surges, which can damage your electrical devices. Unplug your electronic devices and appliances to protect them from power surges.

2 Stay Indoors: Stay inside during a thunderstorm to avoid being struck by lightning. If you’re outside and can’t get indoors, avoid open fields, high ground, and metal objects, such as fences and poles.

4 Have Your Electrical System Inspected:

Use Surge Protectors: Surge protectors can help protect your electronic devices from power surges caused by lightning strikes. Use surge protectors to protect your devices from power surges. 01778

3

If you live in an area that experiences frequent summer storms, it’s a good idea to have your electrical system inspected by a professional electrician. An electrician can identify any potential electrical hazards and make necessary repairs or upgrades to ensure that your home is safe during a storm.

In conclusion, staying safe during summer storms is essential. By unplugging electrical devices, staying indoors, using surge protectors, and having your electrical system inspected, you can protect yourself and your home from electrical hazards during a summer storm.

Contact Alto Electrical today to schedule an electrical inspection or to learn more about our electrical services.

‘Snap Up’ Your Tickets For The Len Pick Memorial Evening!

The Len Pick Trust is looking forward to welcoming distinguished wildlife photographer, Nick Williams to the Len Pick Memorial Evening, which is set to return to the Bourne Corn Exchange on Wednesday, October 11th, following a two-year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Aformer primary school headteacher, Nick has travelled extensively, taking beautiful wildlife photographs, and presenting shows to schools and adult groups for over thirty years. His photographs have appeared regularly in popular publications such as Bird Watching Magazine and Birds Illustrated.

From his home on the edge of the Lincolnshire Fens, Nick has travelled to many parts of the world, and the evening will be a ‘travelogue’ of his experiences, containing lots of interesting facts, humour, and haunting music sequences. Nick is no stranger to the Memorial Evening, having given a short presentation at the event in 2007, before Dr. David Bellamy OBE took to the stage.

The Len Pick Memorial Evening is held annually and provides an opportunity to remember the life of Len Pick and his positive contribution to the town. Previous guest speakers have included Amanda Owen, Adam Henson, Mandy Hickson and Bill Turnbull.

The event will be held on Wednesday, October 11th, starting at 7pm. Tickets are £7.50 each, which includes a complimentary glass of wine upon arrival, and go on sale on Friday, September 1st at 9am. They are available to purchase online at www.lenpicktrust.org.uk/event.

The Old Town Hall

Become a Trustee

Following the award of a significant development grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, we are looking to recruit an additional trustee to help us deliver this exciting £2.4m heritage project for the town of Bourne. This could be your chance to make a difference in helping to restore the Old Town Hall to its 200-year-old splendour and create a lasting community arts and entertainment centre in the heart of Bourne.

Since its inception, the Trust has been working to secure funding for the restoration, whilst successfully operating the building in the spirit of the final vision. This has been achieved by creating a welcoming venue, offering a variety of cultural events to the local community, which has to date included live music, theatre, films, poetry, crafts, talks and even a ‘Comic-Con’ in 2022!

We are looking for an individual with a passion for the arts and entertainment, with some spare time, to join our team. Specific experience is much less important than a genuine passion for the project, a positive “can-do” attitude, and a willingness to get involved to make things happen.

If you are interested in learning more, please e-mail info@bournetownhall.org.uk for an application form.

For further details, please visit our website at www.bournetownhall.org.uk

Don’t Let Cowboy Clearance Companies Mess up Waste Disposal Plans

From a September “spring clean” to a full-blown house (or even office) clearance, embarking on this for the first time can be a daunting, and sometimes emotional, experience. But before you enlist the clear-out services of a clearance company, wise up to their waste disposal offering to ensure they don’t mess up your good intentions. Taking the time to do a few checks can help make sure that your unwanted belongings won’t be fly tipped illegally. Be safe with these top tips:

• Ask the company if they have a waste carrier’s licence. These are issued by the environment agency and make it legal to carry your rubbish. Without it, they are breaking the law; so don’t hesitate to ask.

• Professional businesses will have measures in place to protect their employees, staff and of course you. Ask them if they have public liability insurance, as good house clearance companies will certainly have one.

• House clearance companies have overheads such as fuel, labour, tipping, and recycling fees. If a price sounds too cheap, then it might be that they intend to dump your stuff on the side of a road, down an alley or even in a field.

• Normally, a good online reputation will reflect in the ‘real world’; ensure that they have good reviews on reputable platforms, or get in touch with tried and tested traders at House Clearances in Peterborough | PE1 | Recommended by Safe Local Trades.

• Sustainability and caring for the environment may also be a concern when it comes to house clearance and waste disposal; leaving this to the professionals can help meet those expectations.

If you are looking to declutter on a small scale:

• Start small. Maybe kick off with a drawer or cupboard and work your way methodically through the house – one room at a time.

• Have a system in place – label boxes for items you want to throw away, recycle or sell.

• Think about “clutter control” if you are selling your home. In preparation for viewings, pack away any items that may make your home look crowded, including toys.

However, there may be some larger projects that you just don’t have the time or capability to manage alone, and that’s when calling in the experts can help clear your mind as well as your surroundings.

Smalley Hot Tub Services Ltd: A Happy Covid Lockdown Story!

One warm evening during the Covid lockdown in March 2020, Chris and

Justine Smalley were in their hot tub, wondering just how being furloughed from a seventeen-year career in the Royal Navy would affect Chris and his family.

As a graduate engineer, Chris had fixed everything from air defence systems to ships’ radar systems... and, yes, he had also repaired their own hot tub! This was their ‘light bulb moment’ and Smalley Hot Tub Services Ltd was born! Over the next two years, the business grew to a point where repairs on all makes and models of inflatable tub, and also acrylic tubs, were being made. In August, the family left the Royal Navy behind, moving to Pinchbeck, and to large premises, from where this flourishing business now operates, with aspirations to include a showroom before long.

Smalley Hot Tub Services offer a wide range of services, all underlain by a friendly, customercentred approach. These include hot tub and liner repairs, pump servicing and replacement, and diagnosing electrical faults, besides being a main dealer for several firms such as Catalina Spas and Earth Spas.

They have a very strong online offering and can supply chemicals, swimming pools, barbecues and so much more for the great outdoors, from their “One Stop Shop”.

Justine and Chris pride themselves on the highest standards, good workmanship, and honesty, putting customers first above everything else.

Wills

Why do I need a will?

Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate.

If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.

Lasting Powers of Attorney

What are they?

Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.

These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.

Probate

What is it?

When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.

We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.

Words from the Mayor

Bourne Town Council is now responsible for the playing field in Dyke as well as the Recreation Ground in Bourne. They have also taken on the responsibility for the skatepark. I am really pleased to see this project come to a good conclusion. It was not an easy project especially with the Covid lockdowns. It is great to have two generous charities in Bourne (The Len Pick Trust and Bourne United Charities) and they have both got behind this project to make it happen. I would like to thank them both.

Dyke Village Hall has gone from strength to strength, thanks to the hard work of a few dedicated villagers and some town councillors. They run fundraising events throughout the year, and you can check these out on their Facebook page. The Scarecrow Festival this year is on September 30th.

Twenty Village Hall has unfortunately not been used and loved for a long time. There is now a new committee who have had a report done on the

building and it has been decided that it is viable to be restored. However, the play equipment on the land is not viable and to ensure we can get insurance on the hall it may have to be removed completely. I have suggested we try crowd funding to replace it. If there is anyone who would like to get involved in the project of revamping the hall, please contact me.
