t’s August, which means only one thing for many of our readers – another school year is over, and the children (along with their teachers and ancillary staff) are enjoying their wellearned, six-week break.

One of life’s great ironies must be when those people, quite prepared to lie on those faraway beaches at enormous expense and complain about our “rubbish British weather” and then, when global warming delivers us record-breaking days like we’ve just recently been experiencing, are the ones who wear those glum frowns and say, “It’s far too hot!”

Climate change means that heat records are now being smashed with increasing frequency, so perhaps those ‘faraway beach’ buddies will in future be content with some toasty staycations!

Ongoing airport chaos is adding an edge of uncertainty to holidays for many people planning to travel abroad this summer whilst, for those who are spending much of the holiday season here at home, there are so many things to do locally.

T

he Abbey Lawn, for instance, provides a wonderful backdrop to spectate or be involved in everything from cricket to boules, or a chance to cool off and escape from the soaring temperatures with a refreshing dip at the outdoor pool. In contrast, Bourne Woods offer acres of shady space to wander where you choose; busier routes where you will meet walkers, cyclists, runners, and social groups of people; or quieter places where you can find some solitude for a while and hopefully catch a glimpse of a Purple Emperor butterfly or hear the varied sounds of nature, away from the town and traffic. We are very fortunate to have such a varied landscape and several heritage buildings to host numerous opportunities for leisure and enjoyment.

This week, I will be with Bourne U3A as they celebrate twentyone years in Bourne. The University of the Third Age offers a wide range of physical, social, and intellectual activities chosen and lead by members, and is an organisation that has been growing in the UK since the early 1980s. Here at the Bourne U3A,

the group has around forty-five different activities currently on offer and is open to adults with some time to spare after their main ‘working life’.

Once again, July brought the judges from the East Midlands region to see “Bourne in Bloom”.

This is judged, not simply on the beautiful floral displays we have decorating various parts of the town, but it encompasses all forms of horticultural achievement across the parish and recognises communitywide participation in taking responsibility for the environment where we live. This year, the Bourne and District Flower Club have added their talents to the floral display by reinventing the beacon firebaskets from the jubilee celebrations as additional planters at the entrances to the town. The judges also visited the Community Orchard, and the Forest School which is part of the learning environment at the Willoughby School.

If you have any great ideas for future projects or events in the parish of Bourne or would like to offer your services to the “Bourne in Bloom” activities, “every little helps” as they say, and the Town Council are always pleased to listen to ideas and support, and encourage community activities wherever possible.

moisture, it can help to add mulch around your crops to prevent excess evaporation, preferably immediately after it has rained.

Jobs for August: • Prune gooseberry and currant bushes.

Besides freezing vegetables and fruit, they can be used in jams, chutneys, pickles, flavoured oils, and vinegars. Several root vegetables store well in a cool, ventilated spot such as a shed or garage; remove their leaves and then put into layers of damp sand.

• Strawberry runners that have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot where you have not grown them for at least three years. Planting them through plastic will help conserve moisture and provide warmth during the winter.

Now is the time for some forward planning, which is the key to a successful plot. As space becomes available when crops finish, you can plant overwintering crops such as Brussels sprouts, spring cabbage and winter cauliflowers. Cabbage seeds can be planted in a temporary bed or in pots or modulesremember to cover them with nets to keep off the birds and caterpillars. Also, for harvesting in the autumn and beyond, you could sow lettuce (keep out of the glare of direct sun), rocket, spring onion, radish plus winter salads, including mibuna, mizuna, mustard leaf and lamb’s lettuce.

• Harvest courgettes regularly, before they grow too large.

Watch out for potato blight, (unsightly brown patches which appear rapidly on the foliage), common at the end of August when the weather is humid and damp. The leaves can soon be covered, and the plant will collapse.

All is not lost if you cut off the stems at ground level before the blight reaches the tubers.

If the weather carries on as it is now, (hot and dry), then watering is essential. To retain precious

• Keep earthing up potatoes to prevent the tubers being exposed and also brassicas to support unsteady stems.

• Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes as this will encourage growth lower down.

This month, we’ve been getting lots of enquiries for Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs) on houses that people are in the process of purchasing. This is something we certainly recommend for both buyers and sellers.

If you are a seller, getting a report on

your property shows any potential buyers that there is nothing wrong electrically with your home. Even if this uncovers a concern within your electrical system, and you may not wish to undertake the work, it still puts you in a better position because now you can put a figure against any repairs that need to be done. This makes negotiating much easier, as any work that needs to be done is now quantifiable.

If you are a buyer, getting a report on

a property that you are buying puts your mind at rest as it makes the level of work required transparent so you can go in with your eyes open.

It may also help with mortgages or insurance if valuers or surveyors raise any concerns.

In both instances, I believe this is highly beneficial, as having a report carried out well before the purchase is completed will help to stop delays later in the process.

Many people believe that their electrics will have been checked by their surveyor in the buying process and are often surprised when we advise them that an electrical report is not generally included and must be requested separately by their electrician. If you are buying a property and the owner has an electrical report already, we recommend that you request this and have it reviewed to see what concerns it may have raised.

Is Bourne Outdoor Swimming Pool the Oldest in England?

ourne Outdoor Swimming Pool already has the accolade of being, at almost Olympic size (what’s a few inches between friends?) one of the largest of the few surviving outdoor pools in the country, but should it claim to be the oldest?

The original Monks pond

were soon dismantled. As the site of the Abbey seems to have remained undeveloped over the next four hundred or so years, we can only suppose that the residents of Bourne took advantage of the fishpond for amusement, highly likely to include a bit of swimming.

Bourne Abbey was founded on or before 1138 by local bigwig, Gilbert “Strong-bow” Baldwin FitzGilbert, Lord of the Manor of Bourne, Chief Forrester of Kesteven and Guardian of the Fens. He granted it to Gervaise, the Abbot of Arrouaise in Northern France, together with Bourne Church, land in various locations, his fisheries in Bourne Marsh, and a fishpond near the church. The location and size of this “Monks Pond” is the first incarnation of today’s outdoor pool.

In 1891, there were calls to build a new pool at Burwood’s Pit. However, after the Great War in 1919, it was the Monks Pond that was converted (I think the term was used loosely), into a swimming pool by inserting sides of corrugated iron and partly concreting the bottom. Health and safety concerns were addressed by surrounding the pool with chains, but lucky swimmers were still able to feel the eels running through their toes in what was left of the muddy bottom!

Whilst the Augustine monks who called Bourne Abbey their home may not have embraced the joys of wild swimming, I am sure there may have been occasions for a bit of a paddle or even a full-scale wade when catching the traditional fish for Friday’s meal!

Ten years later, and a major scheme of improvements took place. The pool was lined with reinforced concrete, a substantial diving structure was erected, and the unheated water, still supplied directly from the Bourne Eau, was now filtered for cleanliness.

In 1536, under Henry VIII, the Abbey of Bourne suffered the fate of all smaller monasteries and was dissolved. The conventional buildings of the Abbey

In 1966, the pool embraced the new modern era, and indoor changing rooms were constructed, though it took until 1971, when the funds were raised by Bourne Round Table, to install a water heating system.

So, the pool celebrated its centenary in 2019, but perhaps the real anniversary to look forward to, in sixteen years’ time, is its nine-hundredth one!

Pensions are Paramount!

T

his is not the first time that pension sharing on divorce has been mentioned in this column, and it will doubtless not be the last. Despite the wealth of information available, not just in a legal context but on social media, money advice programmes and articles, the general position of divorcing couples in respect of pension sharing is … ignorance!

Aviva have recently completed a survey revealing that divorcing couples do not understand the implications for their pensions. The survey found that one in six divorced people said they did not realise their pensions could be affected by splitting up.

More than a third said they made no claim on their former partner’s pension, even though 8% said they had no pension savings of their own, relying instead on their partner to fund their retirement. As a result of divorce, 10% of respondents said they are, or expect to be, significantly worse off in retirement.

These disheartening statistics could so easily be changed for the better. Granted, it will involve divorcing couples, (or at least the wife, as it usually is!) paying for the services of a Family Law solicitor, but this is likely to prove very worthwhile.

By missing out on a share of pension assets, which are often the largest asset from a marriage, the disadvantaged spouse is surrendering what is a rightful 50% share of the assets and thereby facing an impoverished retirement.

Pensions are complicated, particularly those known as ‘Defined Benefit Schemes’ with, for example, the NHS, teaching, and the police/armed forces.

Expert advice is required to understand the true value of such pensions and how to share them fairly.

Don’t lose out – if you are divorcing, prioritise pensions in your financial settlement.

2) Move your barbecue away from sheds, fences, overhanging branches, and foliage, and never light it in an enclosed space.

3) Never leave a barbecue unattended.

4) Never let children too close to the barbecue.

5) Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues.

6) If it’s a gas barbecue, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder.

7) When choosing a barbecue, ensure it is strong and sturdy, and keep it well-maintained.

8) Disposable barbecues should be left to cool for several hours before being disposed of.

And it’s not just barbecues that can cause an outdoor hazard: • Ensure all lanterns and candles with a naked flame are fully extinguished when you leave the garden.

• Never leave children unattended in or near inflatable pools or garden ponds. Take care also when visiting other people’s gardens – children can drown in less than 3cm of water.

• Clear away unused garden hoses and tools – a dangerous trip hazard.

Exciting End-of-Term Fun at Edenham School

t has been another fantastic year at Edenham CE Primary School with lots to celebrate, lots to look back on and smile about, and lots to look forward to in the future.

To celebrate all their hard work, Years 5 and 6 took full advantage of the wonderful weather we had in July. They met at Grimsthorpe Castle on a Thursday evening, where they then carried their belongings for the night and the next day, and hiked across country back to school where they had to set up camp for the night. The evening was full of activities, including a barbecue (food kindly supplied by Mill Farm), silent disco, games and, of course, “s’mores” toasted on the campfire! Despite the noisy sheep and crows, a decent night’s sleep was had by all, ready for the next day, which was again jampacked, with inflatable challenges, activities, and a water fight.

We are really looking forward to re-introducing external residentials into our curriculum next year and continuing to provide exciting learning experiences for all our children.

Sabotaging Your Results

at the Weekend?

A

t this time of year, many people are typically trying to lose weight with the goal of being in shape for the summer.

The ideal rate of loss when dieting is around one to two pounds per week, which essentially means that you need to create a calorie deficit of at least 3,500 calories over the course of seven days. In short, establish the number of calories you need to consume to remain as you are (known as ‘maintenance calories’) and subtract 500 calories per day, giving you a 3,500-calorie deficit across the entire week.

But does this sound like you?

It’s Friday, the weekend is here and it’s time to celebrate! A bottle of wine, a takeaway, a trip to a coffee shop for a latte and cake, another takeaway, or a meal out … and so it might well go on! This is where so many people go wrong! From Monday to Friday afternoon, they stick to their diets and adhere to their 500-calorie daily deficit. As of 5pm on Friday, a 2500 calorie deficit has been achieved but then…the cravings kick in! It’s not what you eat in one day or one meal that is going to affect weight loss, it’s what you eat on average over a week. Sure, one weekend won’t do much harm longterm but if you follow this approach every week, you’ll never see any progress in terms of weight loss.

So, to prevent a loss of control over the weekend, plan ahead. ● If you know you’re going to be eating out, look at the menu in advance, select your food (ideally making a low-calorie choice) and enter the details into a food tracking app such as ‘My Fitness Pal’. You can then plan the day’s eating around this ‘higher calorie than usual meal’ and reduce food portions elsewhere throughout the day. ● Think of calories as a budget. If you don’t have money in your bank account, you can’t spend it, so if you don’t have the calories left to allow for extra treats then you can’t eat them! It takes selfcontrol, but if your weight loss goals are stronger than your desire to overeat, then it should be simple to stay motivated and disciplined. If you know well in advance that you’re going to be overeating multiple times over the weekend, then reduce your calories between Monday and Friday. ● Don’t be stuck in the endless cycle of “diet starts Monday”. Show some discipline during your weekends; aim to do something physical, even if it’s just going for a long walk with the family or friends.

Follow these simple steps and your weight loss journey will be a successful one.

F

rom time to time, we are told by clients that there are people trying to encourage work to be done in connection with wills or Lasting Powers of Attorney.

These people are either walking the high street or something similar. However, there are risks involved in any form of street- or ‘cold-calling’ process.

A will and a Lasting Power of Attorney are very important documents, and a face-to-face local meeting works best. Indeed, the same point can apply to all legal work. Any work done at a distance does not have the same benefits of faceto-face communication. At Double and Megson, we have had instructions across three generations of families, and knowing who your solicitor is can still provide a lot of confidence.

The Law Society are keen to point out that if a client wants to have a will or a Lasting Power of Attorney prepared, they should instruct a high street firm. The benefits are that the high street firm is (a) regulated by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority (SRA) and (b) insured if something were to go wrong. Furthermore, this high street firm, Double and Megson, has been in the community for forty-two years so, if further information is needed, a client knows where to come for advice.

Now that the pandemic crisis appears to be receding, we can once again meet with clients, face-to-face (which has already been happening for quite a while). Some meetings are still digital and that can help, especially with Court matters and meetings with barristers.

Simple Summer Joy!

For centuries, the dark and the cold have gone hand in hand with misery and depression, whereas the warmth of sunlight is seen as a bringer of happiness.

A

s I write this, I have my curtains drawn and my fan on full blast, as it is pushing up to forty degrees outside, so presently, I somewhat beg to differ! But there is something to be said for the benefits of summer. Sunlight provides us with vitamin D, which helps keep our bones strong, and it also boosts serotonin, the hormone responsible for keeping us happy, and helps keep depression at bay.

In our modern world, summer can often mean endless obligations – weddings, barbecues, entertaining children during their school holidays – but if we stop to enjoy a mindful moment, appreciating nature’s gift of summer, it can really benefit our mental health. Here are a few simple ideas…

Our ancestors would have spent this time ensuring that their crops were growing well, and that young animals born in the spring were cared for. So, why not spend some time watering your plants? If you don’t have a large garden space, there are plenty of varieties of houseplants to suit every space.

In my bedroom alone, I have about thirty(!), and find that it really boosts my mood.

Do you remember how you used to play when you were young? Let’s get in touch with that inner child! Fill a paddling pool or washing up bowl with water and have a good old splash! You’re never too old to feel the cool water refresh your hot skin.

One of my favourite things about summer is kicking my shoes off. I love the freeing feeling of walking barefoot around my garden and feeling the earth beneath my feet. If you’re feeling brave, try it at the park or at the beach, and feel the warm grains of sand between your toes. But always be careful and watch out for sharp bits!

Recently I have been making a lot of sun teas. Pop some chamomile flowers, lavender, and any other herb you fancy into a jug of water (ensuring you’re not using anything toxic). Cover and leave in the sun for the day, then in the evening pour over ice, and drink up that liquid sunshine!

Above all else, take care of your health.

Always use plenty of sunscreen, seek shade in the middle of the day, and drink so much water that you feel you might burst!

Bourne Academy Celebrates Glowing O

A

recent Ofsted report for Bourne Academy, which is part of South Lincolnshire Academies Trust, has praised the school for their exceptional pastoral care, strong moral purpose, and vision from senior leaders, plus an ambitious and wellplanned curriculum. Bourne Academy are delighted that Ofsted has recognised that they remain a ‘Good’ school and they are pleased with how positive Ofsted were about all areas within the school.

During a two-day inspection in May 2022, Ofsted inspectors focused on the quality of education, which included the curriculum, behaviour and attitudes, and personal development. The last Ofsted inspection for the school was conducted in 2017. This popular, non-selective, mixed secondary school for 11-18 years, consistently outperforms most

Lincolnshire grammar schools and is in the top five of all schools in Lincolnshire (DfE performance tables). In 2021, their Sixth Form students achieved a 100% pass rate in A-levels and BTEC subjects, with 99% of students going to their first-choice university.

As part of the Ofsted inspection, all students, parents, and staff completed an independent survey. This highlighted that students say they are proud of their school and are very well cared for; parents recognise that students are well behaved, and staff are proud to work at the school.

Ofsted noted that students appreciate the wide range of extra-curricular opportunities on offer and are keen to participate in the sporting, music, and drama activities. In this inspection, there was a ‘deep dive’ into the English curriculum and the

he halls were alive with the sound of music at Bourne Abbey C of E Primary Academy recently, when members of Britten Sinfonia, one of the world’s leading orchestra ensembles, delivered some sensational workshops to the children in Years 3 and 4. Violins, flutes and French horns were all on display as the children were treated to a variety of engaging and interactive performances from highly skilled, professional musicians.

The children learned how the instruments produce sound, as well as how they are played and the instrument family they belong to, before providing the percussion for a whole-group performance.

Whether singing about a fruit salad, playing a garden hose, or listening to a flute duet with an alarm clock, the children were spellbound throughout and thoroughly enjoyed their time with the performers.

Westfield Go Indian for Arts Week!

Bourne Westfield Primary Academy held their annual Arts Week during the penultimate week of term. This year, the school chose to focus on India as a theme in recognition of their partnership with Sajoni school in Southern India.

The two schools are hoping to work closely together over the forthcoming academic year and Westfield wanted to initiate this activity with a full week of immersive learning on Indian culture which included dance, drama, music, cookery, art, and textiles.

Napur Arts from Leicester were “artists in residence” throughout the week and taught all the children and staff a Bollywood and traditional Indian dance routine. The whole school performed this as their finale on the last day of a week of creative celebration as part of their learning on Holi, the Hindu festival of spring.

Rebecca Beavis, from Bourne Westfield said, “The children and staff absolutely love Arts Week which is a highlight in our calendar.”

The Glebe Singers Want You! The Glebe Singers Community Choir, based in Market Deeping, have just concluded their first year of rehearsals, back together again after Covid stopped them in their tracks in March 2020. Their final two special performances were given, entertaining residents at care homes in both Bourne and Deeping St. James, where they sang a variety of pieces, ranging from “Danny Boy” to “How Shall I Keep From Singing?”

As a Community Choir, giving back to the community is important, and these performances provided an excellent opportunity to do just that.

The choir is now taking a break for the summer holidays, but will be returning to rehearsing on Wednesday September 7th, and would love to welcome new members into their midst.

If you like singing and would like to come along and experience a rehearsal, they will be at The Green School, Market Deeping from September 7th, and for the coming year, members will again be able to join with no subscription fees.

COMMENTARY

uly was the month of the British Grand Prix, held in 1962 at Aintree - this race would take us past the half-way point in the Grand Prix season. Graham Hill's BRM had only managed fifth on the grid, with arch-rival, Jim Clark in the Lotus taking pole position. Jim Clark went on to win the race; and Hill came in fourth, struggling with excessive tyre wear as the race progressed.

However, in the overall scheme of things, there was promise and optimism; Hill was leading the Drivers' Championship; ahead of Jim Clark by one point.

In the Constructors' Championship, BRM were in second place, behind Lotus by one point. There was all to play for, and the contribution of Hill's BRM team mate Richie Ginther was a huge part of this - and his third place in the French Grand Prix at Rheims when Hill's BRM failed to finish just shows how important Richie's contribution was to the eventual Constructors' Championship victory.
