What greater praise could any youngster get than to hear their father say, “You’re even better than your dad thought”? So it was that Ian Raducanu shared the view of the whole nation recently, when his absurdly gifted daughter, Emma, not only won the US Open tennis championship, but did it as a complete outsider, and without losing a single set along the way. No wonder he was driven to superlatives! Any ideas who might get this year’s runner-up spot in the Sports Personality of the Year awards?

My friend told me he was thinking of going to a fancy-dress party dressed as an Italian island. I said, “Don’t be Sicily”. He said there was a guy going with a didgeridoo playing “Mamma Mia”. I said, “Now that’s what I call Abba-riginal!”

OCTOBER 31ST? WHAT’S THAT ALL ABOUT THEN?

H

allowe’en is a night of celebration, every year, on October 31st.

The word Hallowe’en is a shortening of “All Hallows’ Evening”, (the day before All Hallows’ Day). Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting “haunted houses” and carving pumpkins or “jack-o-lanterns”.

Hallowe’en has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced “sah-win”). The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture.

Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that, on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc, such as sickness or damaged crops. The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which in turn attracted bats to the area. These are additional attributes of the history of Hallowe’en.

Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or appease them.

“Trick-or-treating” is an activity for children on or around Hallowe’en, in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as confectionery with the question, “Trick or treat?” The “trick” part of “trick or treat” is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property, if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of Hallowe’en.

It has become socially expected that if you live in a neighbourhood with children, you should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters.

ur new academic year is underway with many positive changes at Morton Church of England Primary School.

Children have enjoyed the changes to guidance which now allow a slightly more ‘normal’ day where they can mix a little more at playtime. Friendships across the school have been rekindled and playtime has become even better.

he Lions’ Family Fun Day on September 5th managed to buck the trend of so many events this summer, and we actually had some brilliant sunny weather! I had great fun presenting medals to Bourne Town Junior football teams, made even better when watching the girls’ team ‘step back as one’ when I tried to engage them in conversation. You’ll never beat their offside trap!

The day before, Judi and I were asked to release live butterflies as part of a moment of remembrance, organised by the Butterfly Hospice Trust, on the Wellhead. The Trust, based in Boston, have recently opened a shop in Bourne; one, much to Judi’s annoyance, I keep buying quality items from. She has another way of describing my purchases! The occasion, supported by The Len Pick Trust, was a deeply moving one for participants who took the time to think about departed loved ones.

Accepting the challenge to ‘have a go’ on the bouncy castle at Discovering Bourne’s ‘Family Barbecue’ was absolutely not a good idea, even though attending the event certainly was.

Discovering Bourne has become an intrinsic part of our community when it drops through our letterbox every month and it was a pleasure to meet the people who make it happen. Long may they do so.

I was hoping to feed Judi’s annoyance when we walked through Dyke for their ‘Treasure and Trash Day’. The village as always was welcoming, and it was great to meet residents ‘recycling’ bits and bobs. Unfortunately, though, I was not allowed to buy a batteryoperated, plastic, and perfectly formed, ‘Kung Foo Fighter’, still in its box! Ho hum.

After Dyke, we partook in a fantastic traditional Sunday lunch at Exchange 1870 Carvery in Bourne Corn Exchange. Andy and his team are well worth a visit, especially as we move into autumn and some colder weather.

Christmas is Coming!

An Appeal from the Bourne Events Team Some of us will be ready to put up our Christmas trees at the end of October and, even though that might be a temptation too much to resist, please don’t! All of us are hoping that Christmas 2021 will be hugely better than last year and, if we are careful, it will be.

Bourne Town Events Team is elated to host its iconic ‘Magical Christmas Fayre and Lights Switch On’ this year on Saturday November 27th. There will be a Christmas Market and fair rides in North Street and a stage bursting with live entertainment throughout the day.

Santa will, this year, be in the ‘Don’t Lose Hope’ shop in South Street with a ‘bookable’ system. Wake House will be hosting the Disney Princesses, as well as some market stalls. The Old Town Hall and the Corn Exchange will also be joining in the festive spirit.

BOURNE TOWN FC FIXTURES 2021 / 22 Bourne Town Football Club was Est in 1883 and is a community club run by volunteers who form the club’s committee.

The aim of the football club is to provide opportunities for local people to play football for their local team and to ensure top quality football coaching is available to all teams playing under the Bourne Town Football Club name. Bourne Town Football Club strive to be an important part of the local community, by working alongside other clubs and organisations to promote football in the local area.

The committee members at Bourne Town FC have been very busy during the last 10 months updating the facilities at the club with the whole clubhouse repainted, a new outside patio going in and finally putting in new windows which has transformed the clubhouse. All this has been funded through some grants given to the club and sponsorship money from all our sponsors last year. Without the loyal support we wouldn’t have been able to do so many upgrades which will give everyone a better experience during the 21/22 season.

t has now been nearly fifty years since the main legislation on divorce was brought into force in this country. Since then, there have been several changes concerning civil partnership and marriage.

Marriage still provides the strongest rights, certainly in the case of the person earning less and who has probably the largest degree of childcare responsibility. Yet many people choose not to marry.

We have heard for many years that marriage is said by some to be, “Just a piece of paper” or “Why should we change something that works for us?” Well, it is when things go wrong that this could matter.

The traditional approach in society has been to question the need for pre-nuptial or cohabitation agreements, as perhaps this shows a lack of commitment between the parties. However, it certainly provides some protection if the parties are

not to be married, or if a marriage breaks down.

If the number of relationships that succeed runs around the mid-50% mark, it follows that those failing must be around the mid-40% range.

Those figures may vary each year, but it gives an idea of the problems that couples face.

Marriage provides a bundle of rights that are robust, and, in a divorce, any deal is scrutinised by a judge. So, a marriage is eminently much more than “just a piece of paper”.

For unmarried people, the law of property is often unable to protect a person fairly.

Each relationship is different and there is no one solution. However, all parties should think about how they should be best protected, particularly bearing in mind that a home is the most expensive item most people buy.

And thanks to the “Covid Stone“ so are the rest of us!! ith coming out of the pandemic and restrictions easing, it’s now time to look forward to those Christmas parties and social gatherings that we missed out on last year. Here at Deep-in Aesthetics we would like to introduce our new treatment offering which will hopefully help give you the push start you need.

We have recently invested in training in a raft of new procedures, not least of which is the fat-dissolving-injection, known as Aqualyx. This is a safe, effective method of destroying fat cells in the treated area. It produces long-lasting results which means you can banish those unwanted areas of stubborn fat that diet and exercise don’t seem to shift.

Aqualyx can be used to treat small pockets of fat around the chin, chest, abdomen, and thighs. Bourne Blood Cancer UK Group’s Coffee Morning: September 9th

oday’s Coffee Morning was held at the Bourne Cricket Club and a big thank you goes to them for their support in allowing us to use their facilities, a perfect venue on such a beautiful morning which allowed visitors to attend and feel comfortable with stalls and coffee outside.

There was a wonderful arrangement of stalls in the club house, a raffle with many prizes, tins, jewellery, cakes and preserves, cards, books, and jigsaws.

Bourne Blood Cancer group started in memory of John McGregor who sadly died of Leukaemia (a Blood Cancer) when he was a student at university and now, we remember one of our helpers Taff Roberts who passed away with a

Blood Cancer. Margaret and Michael McGregor and Yvonne Roberts obviously hold this Charity close to their hearts.

Blood Cancers affect the production and function of Blood Cells and there are three main groups – Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma, but then these also sub-divide. Over £500 million has been invested in research since 1960. The charity is beginning to feel that there is light at the end of the tunnel. This research is helping the 40,000 people who are diagnosed with Blood Cancer in the UK each year to be given effective treatments.

Today’s Coffee Morning raised £777, and we are delighted here in Bourne to be able to contribute to the research programme to help those people who are diagnosed with this condition”.

Bourne United Charities Celebrates 75 Years of the Almshouse Association Did you know that Bourne United Charities, besides making charitable grants and managing the Abbey Lawns and Wellhead, is also an almshouse charity, providing safe and secure, self-sufficient, low-cost community housing for people in housing need?

Since 1931, when the twelve almshouses on West Road were commissioned, voluntary BUC trustees have been managing the day-to-day running and maintenance of the almshouses. 2021 marks the 75th year of the Almshouse Association and BUC recently celebrated the occasion, hosting an afternoon tea for residents at the Darby and Joan Hall.

Beer’s the Thing!

A

s autumn approaches and the leaves turn brown, many a seasonal beer drinker will turn to bitters and brown ales. This nurtures the annual craving for something a bit sweeter than the refreshing golden ales we have been enjoying all summer.

So, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to review some of the locally brewed beers in these styles.

Bitters are classified by strength, starting with “bitter” or “ordinary bitter”, as it was originally known. These are typically 4% alcohol by volume (ABV) or below, so a good choice for session drinking. Examples in this category would be Windmill from 8 Sail or No. 10 from KCB. As the ABV increases between 4% and 5%, then we find ourselves in the realm of the “best bitters” like Newton’s Drop by Zest or Jack Rawlshaw by Welland. If we increase the ABV further, then we have “extra special bitters” (ESBs) at 5% and above, like Rundle Beck by Brewsters and XSB by Xtreme.

As the name suggests, bitters use hop bitterness to balance out the sweetness of the malt (although don’t expect the hop hit that you get from golden ales, pale ales and IPAs). So those of you in search of more sweetness should look to brown ales, old ales and barley wines.

he following article is a reprint of an article that I wrote in 2014 – seven years ago. But, given the government’s latest announcements on their proposals for care, it bears a reprint because, besides a 1.5% increase in National Insurance, nothing much else has changed. I have inserted the new figures alongside the projections from seven years ago.

Curiously, the last figures I saw that gave an average length of stay in a care home said it was four years.

There has been a great deal of comment in the last week about paying for long-term care that will be capped at £75,000 (£86,000). This announcement was initially welcomed with a fanfare in the press, but it has already started to unravel.

What the government has said, and what it means – • Nobody will be forced to sell their home to pay for care in their lifetime.

Local Authorities will extend the current deferred payment scheme with legal charges that will be paid off after a person’s death. The new scheme will attract interest.

• There will be a cap on care costs at £75,000 (£86,000).

This does not acknowledge that “hotel costs” will have to be met. The figure of £200 per week for hotel costs was in the original Dilnot Report, as was a fees cap of £35,000. However, the proposed hotel costs cap is now £12,500 (not yet specified under the new proposals) per year indefinitely, plus £75,000 (£86,000) per person (which is about four years care) means that you will pay out £125,000 (£136,200) in the first four

If you contrast the average care home cost of £550 (£808) per week at the moment or £114,400 (£168,064) over a four-year stay, the net gain to the person in care under the new scheme is £31,864. This obviously is a good thing but does not truly represent the publicised figure. It also doesn’t consider the potential impact of the National Insurance increase which will affect everyone differently dependent on their circumstances.

• The lower asset limit will be raised to £123,000 (£100,000).

No arguments from me, this is a good thing; a rise from £23,500 at present so people will get to keep a bit more of their hard-earned cash.

The last thing to say is that these are only proposals at the moment, and they won’t come in until 2017 (2023) at the earliest (parliamentary time and elections permitting). So, you still need to be focussed on doing the right planning for you and your family.

So, You Need a Rewire?

ewiring your home is not usually something that can be avoided; it is only when the installation in your home needs replacing.

To prepare you … you are likely to have holes in your walls that will need plastering. Unless you are having the installation surface mounted in trunking, or the walls of the building are hollow, there is going to be damage. We always minimise it as much as we can, and can arrange for the walls to be plastered for you if you wish.

Tips to make the rewire as painless as possible

Warn the neighbours. Nobody likes conflict, but there is the potential for it, especially if they are shift workers. But most people are happy to live with the noise, providing they know it is happening, and for how long. Alto Electrical have a letter template that you can have, to send to your neighbours that will warn them that the work is going to be carried out, how long it will last, and it will provide them with our contact details in case they need to discuss anything, such as where we are parked. Alternatively, we are happy to send that letter ourselves.

Don’t go too far! When we are working on your home, often there may be decisions we need you to make. For example, we can’t access a certain area, so we would check with you if it is ok to go via another route. Book the other trades in. If we’re not arranging the plasterers and decorators, get them booked in (leaving a little buffer).

The quicker the plastering and decorating is done, the quicker the dust will go away. You don’t want to be waiting weeks or months before you can get all the dust out of the air.

ll first-time-buyers are hoping to make this year the year they get on the property ladder, thanks to the increasing availability of 95% mortgages. But while there are higher numbers of suitable mortgages available, there’s no guarantee that you’ll be approved. To improve your chances, here are some of our top tips:

Register to Vote It might not sound like this has much to do with your mortgage, but you’ll find it impossible to get approved if you’re not on the electoral roll. Though the main purpose of this register is to prevent fraudulent voting, it’s also used in credit applications and is one of the first things a mortgage provider will check. The process of registering is easy (so long as you’re a British citizen, an Irish citizen, or a Commonwealth or EU citizen who is living in the UK) and it can be completed online.

Check Your Credit Report Your credit report includes any financial issues on your record in the last six years. If you’ve received a county court judgement or filed for bankruptcy in that time, more than likely you’re aware of the issue and how it could affect your mortgage application. But even smaller incidents, such as late bill payments, can impact your score, and occasionally you’ll see something on the report you weren’t aware of. Very occasionally, you may also find an error, which can be corrected by contacting the creditor.

Organise Your Finances Lenders want to see that your financial affairs are in order, so now is the time you need to tidy them up. If you have bank accounts that you no longer use, close them. If you have small amounts of money in different accounts, consider pooling them together into one to give a clearer picture of your financial position.

Pay Off Outstanding Debts Mortgage providers will check to see how many credit arrangements you already have before they approve your mortgage, and they want to see that number as low as possible. So, if you have small outstanding debts that you can clear without subtracting from the money you have saved as a deposit, it makes sense to do so.

Delay New Credit Applications Usually, when you make a new credit application, the lender will perform a hard enquiry on your credit score. If several hard enquiries are made during a short period, that can temporarily affect your credit score.

So, until your mortgage application is approved, it’s best to delay new credit applications, whether this is a new credit card, a new phone contract, car financing or any type of loan.

astern Angles will bring brand new theatre to local audiences with Our White Skoda Octavia being performed at Peterborough’s Key Theatre on November 5th and 6th as part of a month-long tour.

Written by Shamser Sinha, this moving play shines a light on the struggles of contemporary life as one family juggles bills, dreams and taxi-driving schemes.

It’s said it was inspired by conversations with taxidrivers and residents of Peterborough and Ipswich held in 2018 as part of an Arts Council funded research project.

Set in a small town in the East of England, just before the credit crunch of 2007, Amjad decides to take up taxi-driving. His days take on the rhythm of a drum. But when money is tight and Rabia’s stifled ambitions hang heavy in the air, even the songs of John Denver or the scent of a Chitral rose are not enough to mend the cracks.

Shamser Sinha said: “Part of who we are is in other people, and part of us is in them. No more so than

with families and the places they live. I guess that was my inspiration.”

Spanning over a decade, Our White Skoda Octavia follows the Afridi family as they try to remain optimistic in the face of relationship troubles, health difficulties and financial worries.

his popular motor engineering business was first established over thirty years ago in Bourne

by Mick Ayliff as ‘Mick Ayliff Motor Engineer’ and, supported by his wife Heather, they developed the premises at The Slipe, off Cherry Holt Road.

In time, their son Max was employed whilst studying for his NVQs at Peterborough College, and earlier this year, Max’s wife, Zoe, joined the company. They now employ two full-time, skilled mechanics, Ian and Ben, whilst Mick and Heather still “do their bit” on a part-time basis.

Ayliff’s Garage Ltd can provide services to most makes and models of vehicles, dependent on the customers’ needs. They can also service vehicles in accordance with manufacturers’ warranties, using genuine parts. Whilst servicing your vehicle may seem costly, safety is of course paramount, and services can often prevent further work being required in the future.
