ow often do we hear the cliché, “An Englishman’s home is his castle”? There’s no doubt that, as a nation, we seem to be pretty good at ‘fencing ourselves in’ when we feel like it – pulling up the drawbridge and cosying ourselves behind that Leylandii hedge.

businesses having been based on the boundary fence / hedge / wall around our little space. Add to that the feeling that our garden area can / should be able to be used as another room (if the weather allows), then we can see how the firms creating patios, sheds, porches and all manner of outside furniture have been able to prosper, as we seek “the great outdoors” (once the rain holds off for more than a few days!) set amidst perfectly groomed lawns and flower beds. Inside the home, more and more attention is being paid to the ways in which we can make ourselves more living space, by adding the conservatory or making that ‘dead space’ in the loft into a fabulous extra bedroom or two. Those partition walls can disappear and hey presto! … you’ve got yourself that perfect large lounge you’ve always wanted. Replace those windows, re-tile the bathroom, change those kitchen units, get a new staircase … the list goes on! Our castles are forever being beautified … and isn’t it great?! This month, we’re looking at our living spaces, inside and out, and the myriad ways in which our local craftsmen ply their trades to make our homes and gardens our pride and joy.
