CELEBRATING 11 YEARS

Introduction

Welcome to Your January Issue. At the time of writing, we’re still very much wrapped up in 2017 and the final throes of the year, with its Christmas parties, Santa being chauffeured around our streets, the carols and all the end-of term concerts, all of which make it such a fabulous time of year. In this edition, we feature Bourne’s Magical Christmas Fayre. I always think how beautiful the street lights are and how they provide that final touch, as we plan frantically to get everything in place for the big day. Once again, all the very best to you all for the festive period and the year ahead, and thank-you to all of our contributors. I hope you all have an “Extraordinarily Excellent Eighteen”, and enjoy this month’s issue.

Claire x

Already with family organizer in place on kitchen wall and proposed dates of “not to be missed events” already pencilled in, we race through to 2018, looking forwards, with anticipation and much hope. This first edition of the new year does just that too. There’s plenty of valuable advice from our wonderful contributors, whether it be in the sphere of health issues, legal matters, finance, food, travel, computer issues, motoring, consumer affairs and pets … the list goes on! It’s been a very challenging year for some of us in many various ways, and we all owe a massive hug and a thank-you to everyone who has helped each other, when times haven’t always been smooth. Enjoy this month’s offerings, and may your resolutions last well past the second week of January!

LET’S GET STARTED!

by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness

H

aving the motivation or intention to be fit is one thing; acting on the motivation is another. The more motivated you are, the easier it is to take action and realize your fitness goals.

A University of Georgia study of people who reported persistent fatigue found that those who rode a stationary bike three times a week at low intensity got a bigger energy boost than those who didn’t exercise.

Here are five top tips to help you get motivated and reach your goals this year.

“I’m getting nowhere, so why bother?” First of all, swap the carrot for the stick. You didn’t gain ten pounds in ten days, so it might take a while to lose it. Look beyond the scale. Remind yourself that the benefits of exercise — being healthier, happier, and living longer — are so much greater than the weight loss. But if you do want to lose weight, raise your game: Pick up your walking pace or add reps or sets.

“I’m too far from my goal, so why start?” Just by doing exercise a little more every day, you can shrink your waist in twelve weeks. Doing as little as thirty minutes exercise, three times a week can give you fantastic results without dieting. Break up your goal into smaller units. Little victories, like dropping a pound a week or running an extra minute without stopping, will fuel your momentum. “I hate cardio.” Swap endless treadmill time for circuits. According to a study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, circuit training beats aerobic exercise for building upper-body strength, while giving an equal boost in cardio capacity. Our ladies gym does all of this in just thirty minutes. “I don’t have the energy.” Exercising at even a very easy pace will give you more energy than if you sit it out.

“I just don’t have the time.” You can actually get an effective, total body workout in just thirty minutes. The timetrimming trick: intervals. Our instructors understand what it is like to be a busy woman in our modern world and can tailor your exercise plan to suit your time constraints. Give yourself a visual. So now you’re feeling super motivated, you’re ready and raring to go, give yourself a visual. Get out those jeans or skirt from your wardrobe, hang it in a place where you are going to see it every day. This will be a constant reminder that you are on a mission to look good and feel great. Start visualising how it will feel and look on you; imagine how super confident you are going to feel. The gym team at Renu are here for you, to motivate you, to give encouragement and support. We want you to feel incredible. If you need any help or support, please ask. We are behind you every single step of the way, let’s make this your year!

“YOU’VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES.” Come and find out how you can manage your weight and feel more energised … ALL YEAR! “BEATING BELLY FAT” is the subject of our next wellbeing talk. CELEBRATING 11 YEARS

Celebrating One Year of Jason Ant hony The Story So Far! Wow, one year of Jason Anthony already, and I can’t quite believe where that year has gone! On Tuesday January 3rd, 2017, I opened the door to my very own hair salon … the most exciting, but nerve-racking experience of my life! After working in Bourne as a hairdresser for a number of years, gaining experience in both hairdressing and the running of a salon since I was sixteen, I decided to take the leap and do it for myself, and now I couldn’t be happier! I am extremely passionate about my career and try my absolute best to keep up-to-date with the latest trends/ techniques in hairdressing. I’ve attended various cutting/ colouring courses and intend to go on more courses in 2018, to further my knowledge and creativity in hairdressing and the running of a salon, to make sure my clients get the best service and hair possible. Mariah Not many people would be able to work with their siblings, but we wouldn’t have it any other way! Mariah naturally joined me on my journey of opening Jason Anthony and has been a huge help the whole way. Mariah’s love for hairdressing shines through; she is very professional and a hard-working member of my team with a warm and friendly character that strives to achieve the best service! In addition to her skill-set within hairdressing, Mariah also specialises in eyebrow enhancement, which entails tinting, waxing, threading and plucking, and she loves giving, in her words, “EYEBROWS ON FLEEK”. Elle Elle may be the youngest member of my team, with just over a year of experience, but she’s a force to be reckoned with! Elle is an undeniably talented hairdresser, who will turn her hand to anything that she has been shown. She is keen to learn more and perfect her craft. Whilst loving all 6

aspects of hairdressing, her love for colouring shows, and she specialises in the latest techniques, such as balayage and root stretching. Elle is a very polite, friendly, valued member of my team, and I have loved watching her grow since joining us in February. Lauren Jason Anthony was introduced to the world of beauty when Lauren Gooderson joined us in June 2017. Lauren has a wealth of experience under her belt as a beauty therapist, and her drive and hard work ensures that every client receives 1000%, when they are with her. Lauren specialises in many treatments, such as waxing, massage, L.V.L. lash lift, eyebrow/eyelash tinting, manicure and pedicures. Lauren offers 20% off all beauty treatments on a Tuesdays, but this offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer. Having the beauty service within Jason Anthony means that clients can be pampered, all in the one place. Gemma Last, but certainly not least, we have the lovely Gemma, a fantastic addition to the Jason Anthony team. With over thirteen years of experience in the hairdressing industry, Gemma has gained a lot of knowledge and skills, and has attended many colour/cutting

courses to keep herself up-to-date. She always provides the best customer service and friendly advice to all her clients, and I am really very pleased to have Gemma on my team. You, our clients This year has been the best possible first year of Jason Anthony, a “dream come true”, and I’m very proud of myself and my team. However, none of this would have been possible if it wasn’t for the continued support of you, our valued clients, over the years. Without you, we wouldn’t be where we are, and for that I will be forever grateful. I would like to say a huge thank you to each and every one of you, and we promise to continue to give you the very best. As we say goodbye to Chapter One of Jason Anthony, we are eager to make Chapter Two just as exciting, and will be attending more courses and bring more services to the salon. Watch this Space! This is just the beginning!

Love your Feet? Then call “Love My Feet”! Almost all of us have a pair, and we would be lost without them, but how many of us really take the time or are able to take the best care of our feet? Our feet carry us for thousands of miles during our lifetime, enabling us to walk, run, jump, sprint and a whole manner of other activities, without a second thought. At any one time, 75% of the adult population can be suffering from a foot problem. This can be for a variety of reasons. In many cases, improper footwear is the culprit, but something as simple as incorrectly cut toenails can be as much of a problem.

Many years of wear and tear can take its toll on our poor feet, as can disease, bad circulation, gait and other long-term health problems. As we get older, taking the best care of our feet can become more difficult. My name is Michelle Aspinall and I live in Aslackby with David, my husband of twenty-five years, and our sixteenyear-old Cockerpoo, Hamish. We have three sons, and when the last one left for university two years ago, I decided to pursue my fascination for feet. I have recently trained at the SMAE Institute in Maidenhead, gaining a diploma in foot health from this prestigious institute, which celebrates its centenary of training in 2019. As a mobile foot health practitioner, I now work in Bourne and its surrounding villages, visiting people in the comfort of their own homes, and providing foot care, tailored to the needs of each individual. I find it very interesting, meeting lots of different people from all “walks of life”, and it’s this variety which makes it even more of an enjoyable and rewarding occupation. If you need my help, please contact me at michelle@lovemyfeet.co.uk I look forward to hearing from you.

Looking after your feet is essential for general health and wellbeing. As a mobile foot practitioner I visit you at home to carry out an initial assessment and provide the necessary treatment. All sessions conclude with a foot massage.

I can help with: • Professional Nail Cut and File • Removal of Callus Hard Skin • Treatment of Cracked Heels • Corn Removal • Fungal Nail Treatment

• Verrucas • Reduction of Thickened Nails • Diabetic Foot Assessment and Treatment • Mini Foot Massage • Foot Care Advice

Using Your Mind Power to Achieve Your New Year’s Resolutions Set Yourself up for Success for Your New Year

Take some time to think about the changes you want to make and how you’re going to go about making them. Once you’ve decided what you’re ready to let go of and what you’re ready to introduce into your life, you can then start to create the life you really want for 2018. Your thoughts create your reality, so if you tell yourself that you can’t do something, that things are going to be difficult or, deep down, you don’t believe that you deserve to be slim, healthy, successful, happy or fulfilled, the chances are high that this is what will happen. Just imagine your subconscious mind shouting out things like “You’ll never do it!, There’s no point in trying, It won’t work, You can’t change, You’re useless, You haven’t got what it takes, You should just give up!” But if you decide to take control and make changes, you are making a decision that you are no longer prepared to listen to that nonsense. You do have the power to order it to stop, and let it know that you’re taking back control. Use the power of your mind to make things happen. Once you realise that it’s your own mind that’s been holding you back and causing you to fail over the years, it’s time to change track and begin to direct your life so it can go exactly where you want it to. Become aware of what’s going on in your mind, your powerful inner voice, then choose to take control of it and change it, rather than allowing it to take control of you. How does hypnosis help? Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a powerful method to create self-improvement in a natural, drug-free way, and uses practical, modern well researched strategies to help people make significant positive changes in their lives in a relatively short

period of time. At The Beardwood Practice, we use a combination of trance, neuro linguistic programming, cognitive behavioural therapy, medical hypnotherapy and solution brief therapy to help you make change happen. Our approach focuses on the present and future and not on the past. This enables the client’s possible solutions to become more apparent and worked towards. Hypnosis itself reduces anxiety and this is done very simply through relaxation and visualisation, allowing the client to focus on the positive aspects of their life that encourages a shift in perspective. Through working with the client, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help with stress, anxiety and panic attacks, addictions, IBS, OCD, PTSD, insomnia, hypertension, depression, anger, childbirth, child-focused hypnotherapy, confidence and self-esteem problems. Phobias, such as spiders, water, flying and public speaking can also be minimised, along with painful memories and traumatic experiences. Hypnotherapy is also helpful with self-improvement and goal achievement by stopping procrastination and triggering the process of self-actualisation in a way which is individual to you.

If you would like to book an appointment or find out more about hypnotherapy, contact Christine on: 0780 9690 964 or contact@ beardwoodhypnotherapy. co.uk

Lincs Ladies - Join Bourne’s Fastest-Growing Group - Fantastic for Fitness and for Fun

A

s many residents of Bourne will already be aware, there is a formidable group of colourfully-clad ladies who have recently taken to pounding the streets of the town, (most of them managing a smile), but all very conscious of the fact that running together in a group can not only be particularly good for our health, but can also mean FUN!

Debbie Lawday, (P.R. Officer for Lincs Ladies), takes up the story:

c2-5k

“We are a ladies-only club that was initially set up around eighteen months ago by Sam Scales. She put out a request for any ladies who wanted to join her to start running and get fit. Almost thirty other ladies joined her to run around Bourne. Fast forward to the present day, and we now have over seven hundred members on our Facebook page! We organise a variety of runs/walks each week, around Bourne mainly, but we also organise runs in Deeping and surrounding villages, and have become a familiar sight to many people around the town. These runs are designed to suit any ability and age. We currently run the NHS c2-5k nine week programme three times a year, c2-10k programme and half marathon training. We also offer a walking group, pushchair runs, and interval training for those who want to increase their pace.

Inflatable 5k

Santa Run 2016

We also partake in various running events, raising money for a variety of charities. We have also marshalled for the Tallington Triathlon recently, in order to increase our presence in the community, whilst raising some funds for high-vis vests for our group leaders. We came third in the Mick George “Skip of Gold Competition” and we are finalists in this year’s Active Lincolnshire Sports Awards on November 2nd. To increase our club profile, we have just purchased our own personalised running kits, all paid for by each individual. The group’s expansion has been phenomenal in such a short space of time, which makes us all so proud. We now need to look seriously at where we go from here. We have formed a committee, opened a bank account and have made an application to England Athletics to become an affiliated club. We need to send our group leaders on coaching courses and undertake first aid courses to ensure we adhere to the affiliated regulations.

We are now not only seeking to attract more ladies to join our group, but also to attract support from local businesses and charitable funding groups in the form of sponsorship, grants or donations. For further details, please contact Debbie Lawday at debbielawday@hotmail.co.uk “ 12

Are you ready to make 2018 the year you finally ditch the diet?

With 2018 just around the corner, you may be thinking about New Year’s Resolutions. Do you start each new year full of motivation, but quickly find the willpower fades and before you know it you’re back to where you started? I used to vow to end the year a couple of stones lighter, and invariably ended up half a stone heavier! I spent years yoyo dieting and wondering why I couldn’t keep the weight off. I’ve now learned where I, and most others, get it wrong. We rely on willpower. We desperately look for the ‘ideal’ diet. We

may even resort to meal replacement shakes or fad diets, out of desperation. I’ve finally learned that, to find a sustainable, long-term solution, we have to learn to identify the daily habits and rituals that lead to weight gain in the first place. By understanding how habits are formed, and knowing how to break the habit loops that lead to poor lifestyle choices, we can start to introduce new, healthier habits instead. The good news is habits can be changed. Activ8 is my eight-week weight management programme, designed to help change poor habits and ditch diets for good. Working with small groups of twelve or less, I provide personalised coaching without any embarrassing weekly weighins or restrictive meal plans. You will learn the most up-to-date information on good nutrition, and cut through the confusion of the diet industry. Weekly habit challenges will keep you motivated and focused, and you’ll get advice on how to make good choices. The weekly sessions will keep you accountable, and daily support via social media will help keep you in touch and on track.

Message to New Parents - Help is at Hand!

by Caroline Mentzel, Behaviour management consultant, helpucope ltd

hese days, new parents often find themselves at home within a few hours of giving birth. Who can blame them therefore, for feeling scared, worried, not very confident and isolated? Imagine your baby won’t stop crying, particularly during the night, when you feel as though the whole world is asleep and you are the only person endlessly pacing around the room in the dark? You’ve tried feeding, changing, rocking, singing and your baby continues to cry. You are at your wits’ end; you’re so tired, and beginning to feel helpless, anxious and frustrated. Would you like to be able to pick up the phone and talk to, or text someone who can help you to relax and restore harmony? Suppose you are struggling with your baby’s feeding. Whether feeding on breast, formula or a combination of both, babies often present difficulties in the early days, whilst feeding patterns are becoming established. How useful would it be to have someone you can contact, and with whom you can discuss various options that just might make the difference? Even better if they can come to your home, sit with you and talk to you during a feed time.

appropriate food and drinks. Thus you may find a home visit at mealtimes helpful. Helpucope offers a ‘help at hand’ service to new parents, for the first six months following the birth of your baby. A combination of availability by phone and home visits as required, can provide support, information and guidance; bringing peace of mind and reassurance to new parents. A similar service is also provided for older children, to address issues such as potty training, bedtime, general behaviour etc. For information, or to book a consultation, please contact The Behaviour Transformer at Helpucope on 07958 737252.

Babies sometimes take a while to settle into a sleep routine. However, it doesn’t take much for this to be disrupted, as sleep routines are prone to frequent changes. It can be very frustrating for parents when their baby decides to spend a lot of time awake at night and asleep during the day. Erratic sleeping patterns can last for many months or even years, so if a routine can be maintained, everyone feels the benefit. When your baby is around six months old, you may start to think about weaning. How will you manage the transition from a milk diet to solid food? Once weaned, children often become faddy or refuse food. It is important, therefore, to establish regular meal times and offer a variety of healthy and

Some of the World’s Most Spectacular Scenic Cruises

Clare Lockett

Travel Counsellor

If you’ve never set sail on a cruise ship before, you might be surprised by what you’ll find. Imagining tiny rooms? Lukewarm dinner? Nothing to do? Instead, picture immaculate staterooms with balconies, so you can feel the sea breeze. Fine-dining to rival on-shore restaurants. And thrilling entertainment from Broadway shows to language lessons, to climbing walls.

Cruise holidays aren’t all organised fun and non-stop entertainment though; sometimes it’s the scenery that makes a cruise so special. The simple pleasure of watching the world go by as you drift along a river with drink in hand. The excitement of spotting an unknown shore come into view for the first time. These can be what cruise dreams are made of.

Antarctica If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, a cruise to the far-flung icy lands of Antarctica could be the trip you’re looking for. From the boundless snowy landscape to the loveable resident penguins, Antarctic voyages are rare and unforgettable yet the experience is no longer purely the domain of intrepid explorers, with some amazing niche cruises on offer for passengers with a sense of adventure.

With so many worldwide destinations to choose from, we’ve put together some of the most spectacular sights you can see on a cruise to inspire your next choice...

Chile Journey to the ends of the earth with a small ship cruise around the tip of South America. Chile’s Patagonia region is home to some of the world’s most dramatic scenery, with jagged mountain peaks, remote valleys and herds of llamas. The freezing glacial lakes and fjords are perfect for exploring in a small vessel, allowing you to get up close with the staggering, other-worldly beauty of this wilderness.

The Norwegian Fjords Travel to the land of the midnight sun and the northern lights to see the breathtaking beauty of Norway’s fjords. Carved by glaciers, these deep sea lakes are surrounded by steep, snow-capped mountains, tumbling waterfalls and tiny fishing villages. Amongst the dramatic scenery, the waters of the fjords are beautifully still and calm, broken only by the splashes of seals and whales.

The Amazon We’ve all conjured up scenes of the Amazon in our minds, but immersing yourself in the sights, sounds and smells of this mighty jungle river is a completely different experience! The cries of the howler monkeys, the intensely bright flashes of colour, as birds and butterflies fly past, and the heady humidity of the rainforest all combine to create an exhilarating river cruise experience.

Angkor Wat Cruise along the Mekong River to see one of south-east Asia’s most famous temples, Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The UNESCO World Heritage site is the largest religious monument in the world, as well as an important archaeological site. Built to represent the entire universe, Angkor Wat’s five towers, vast moat and intricate stone carvings are truly spectacular.

The Scottish Hebrides Explore these tiny islands off the west coast of Scotland and you’ll find remote communities, rugged landscapes, and secluded white sandy beaches that wouldn’t look out of place in the Caribbean. Spot dolphins, otters and eagles as you cruise this stunning archipelago and warm yourself on chilly nights with a nip of whisky.

Galletly Practice

- Extension and Expansion Update

Work commenced on the development in early November, and the expansion is now progressing at pace. D. Brown Building Contractors Ltd of Spalding, headed by the site foreman Gary, are working long days to ensure the building programme is kept to time, and whilst it is still early days, (early December), everything is progressing well. Between the contracting team and ourselves as a Practice, we are doing everything we can to ensure our patients are not inconvenienced during the building programme, and that all services are operating normally. However, we would ask everyone to be extra vigilant when entering the premises and adhere to the warning signs on display. The expansion will allow us to provide increased capacity meeting the demand on GP services including out of hours services. Additionally, by amalgamating healthcare professionals into a multi-disciplinary team we can also expand the range of services being provided. We believe the amalgamation of General Practice, Community, Mental Health and Social Service teams can be of great benefit to the patients of Bourne and surrounding areas, and will allow better continuity of care and an increased range of services. The aim is to have the footings and floor in place before the Christmas festivities, with the external walls being built in the New Year – weather permitting! The practice will operate as normal until the evening of Friday 22nd December after which we will be closed until the 26th December inclusive. Normal services will again operate from the morning of 27th December until the evening of Friday 29th December when again we will be closed until we start again on the morning of 2nd January 2018. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our patients a very healthy and prosperous New Year. We look forward to keeping you updated on progress in the weeks ahead.

MEN UNITED IN SONG 2018: SUPPORTING PROSTATE CANCER UK New Year, new you? Looking for a fresh challenge, new skills and a great social scene to boot? Then look no further…

Following its phenomenal success over the last couple of years, Men United in Song is back for 2018, once again raising money for Prostate Cancer UK. Launching in February, the project will sign up a minimum of forty local men with a range of previous singing experience (including none), to rehearse over ten weeks for a charity concert at the Cresset Theatre on Saturday April 14th. To date, the project has engaged hundreds of local men, raising many thousands of pounds for the charity – a fantastic result! Men United in Song is not all about the singing, or even about the fundraising; there’s a fantastic social scene, too! Ultimately, it’s about a group of men getting together in a shared enterprise, which of course is the idea behind Prostate Cancer UK’s Men United campaign, and why the charity seemed such a good fit for the project. William Prideaux, Director of Men United in Song, says, “It’s a real privilege to work with such a cracking bunch of blokes. They take their music making as seriously as their socialising. There’s a real camaraderie among them and a tight-knit aspect to the group makes them a force to be reckoned with”. Men United in Song kicks off with introduction sessions at the Key Theatre at the beginning of February. Absolutely no previous experience is required to join, just a willingness to get stuck in and give it a go. “We’re not looking for a Gary Barlow or an Alfie Boe,” says William Prideaux, “just guys who want to come along and enjoy singing together. Until you’ve tried it, you can’t understand the buzz singing can bring. We’re not looking for 100% in musicality, but 100% in enthusiasm! Come along to an introduction session and find out more; we’re convinced those who do will enjoy themselves and discover how great singing can be!” For further information contact Jo on 01733 425194 or e-mail info@peterboroughmvchoir.org.uk Introduction sessions will be at the Key Theatre, Peterborough on Thursday February 1st, (6.30pm - 9pm), Friday February 2nd, (6.30pm - 9pm) and Saturday February 3rd, (10.30am - 12.30pm). Please call/e-mail to register. Rehearsals will be on Thursday evenings from 7.45pm 9.45pm at the John Mansfield Campus, Western Avenue, Peterborough PE1 4HX. The Men United in Song concert will be at Peterborough’s Cresset Theatre at 7.30pm on Saturday April 14th, 2018.

Mayor

Words from the Mayor Councillor Paul Fellows

My idea of having a half-price sale in January wasn’t greeted very positively by John, owner of South Fen Christmas Trees, after I spent a day working with him and Will on December 1st. I had a great day. Getting the family Christmas tree is, without doubt for many, the beginning of Christmas. With echoes of the film, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”, flashing across my mind, I had a lot of fun helping a group of young adults force a very large tree into the back of a very small car! The next day, Judi and I spent a ‘Magical Day’ meeting both visitors and local residents doing what Bourne does superbly well, hosting a Christmas Market, and then switching on the Bourne Christmas lights. Our Christmas lights are wonderful! Yes they’re the same as last year, yes there’s no massive change to how they look but, yes they’re always wonderful, and so very Bourne! One highlight of the day was visiting the Methodist Christmas Tree Festival, (so creative), and another was Santa’s Grotto. It was the best I’ve ever seen and, as one of Santa’s helpers, I’ve seen a lot. This year, the countdown was led by Josh Waring who definitely got a louder cheer from the crowd than I did, but his achievement, (getting seven gold medals and two bronzes at the Dwarf Olympics in Canada in August 2017), certainly outshines my achievements! A massive thank you from me, representing the town, to both the Events Team and all who gave their time and talent on the stage to start our Christmas so brilliantly. 32

D I S C O V E R I N G

This time of year is always busy for everyone, and I love every bit of the madness that it brings. As well as carol services in Bourne and Melton Mowbray, we were invited to attend a Christingle service and the switching on of Sleaford’s lights and various Christmas fairs. Visiting The Cedars to join in with the residents to celebrate Helen Brewster’s lifetime achievement award was inspiring, both because of the well-deserved award and also

Bourne

to see the care and love that the staff at The Cedars give to the people in their care. The residents made me realise that we all need to face the year ahead with optimism and positivity. As we move through 2018, we will all do the best we can, but perhaps this coming year we can do more than we think. Each year changes our lives, some positively and some not so, but at least we have the opportunity to progress to Christmas 2018. january 2018

A Royal Welcome

The Peterborough Royals, the city’s first women’s American football team, extend a ‘Royal’ welcome to any ladies wanting to try something new on a Saturday morning! The team first came together in the summer of 2016 and has since competed in their first flag (a noncontact form of American football) and kitted (full-contact) tournaments against other, more established women’s teams in the country. The ladies are now looking to the future, with an aim to develop their game from the current five-a-side format to the seven-a-side, more commonly practised by women’s teams in the UK. That’s where you come in! Currently, the Peterborough Royals have a fantastic core of about fifteen dedicated players and three coaches, but there is always room for more! The team is comprised of members from a vast range of backgrounds: from former rugby players to ladies who have never played a team sport in their life; and from university freshers to ladies in their fifties.

American football is so inclusive, with positions for all shapes, sizes and abilities. You don’t have to be an NFL fan to get involved, either – some of the ladies still haven’t even watched a game of American football (other than those they’ve been playing in!). The Royals’ experienced coaches will teach you everything you need to know. The team is currently preparing to implement their new playbook and start practising for the next tournament in January 2018, meaning now is the perfect time to join. All kit is provided for players, so there’s no big expense - the only thing you need to bring is a positive attitude and suitable footwear! What are you waiting for? You can find the Royals on the field at Stanground Academy on Saturday mornings, from 10am until 1pm. For more information, message them via Facebook or Twitter, or email peterboroughroyals@gmail.com. Facebook: Peterborough Royals Women’s American Football Team Twitter: @PtownRoyals

Gardening

The Potting Shed Although there are one or two jobs that you can do, January is a good time for sitting by the fire with a nice cup of tea and organise a planting plan for what you would like to grow and where you are going to grow it. Take stock of what grew well last year, or if you have an allotment, what success other growers had that you would maybe like to try growing. How about trying to grow something a little unusual for a change; away from your usual standard fruit and veg, and order seeds now? You can work on a three year crop rotation: crop rotation prevents the soil from becoming exhausted from growing the same crop, continually taking the same nutrients out of the soil. It also reduces the risk of pests and diseases becoming established and then finding them very difficult to eradicate.

after brassicas, where the nitrogen content has been depleted.

The three year crop rotation involves the following:

• Support Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli;

Year 1: Peas, beans and fruiting vegetables: peas and beans absorb nitrogen from the air and store it in the roots –leaving the roots in after harvesting benefits next year’s crop.

• Protect plants form cold and check stakes and ties;

Year 2: Brassicas –are nitrogen-hungry; grow them where last year’s peas and beans grew. They are also susceptible to club root (a soil-borne fungus), so moving them around helps keep this at bay. Year 3: Roots, tubers, onions and leaves: these crops do not have a particular “thirst” for nitrogen so it is good to grow them

SALES | REPAIRS | SERVICE | PARTS | HIRE

Towards the end of the month, seed potatoes should be available and you can start chitting them in seed trays ready for planting. Other jobs that can be carried out are:• Pruning apple and pear trees, but not stone fruits such as cherry and damson; they should be summer pruned • Plant bare-rooted trees and bushes; • Rhubarb can be forced, using pots or an upturned bucket, making sure any holes are covered to completely cut out the light. What could be tastier than pale pink sticks of rhubarb harvested in late February?

• Start a bean trench by digging down about 60cm and then start filling it with your organic kitchen waste. Each time you add a batch of waste, cover with a layer of soil: continue until the trench is full and leave it to rot down. It’s a good time of year for a spot of cleaning: seed trays and plant pots can be cleaned with a mild bleach solution to kill diseases that may have carried over to the new seedlings. Happy gardening for 2018!

Christmas Fayre

40

D I S C O V E R I N G

Bourne

january 2018

Saturday December 2nd saw a fabulous opening to the festive season for the people of Bourne and neighbouring villages, as the annual Magical Fayre once again thrilled the many hundreds of visitors to our welcoming streets. The weather was particularly kind this year, and the turnout, from mid-morning, right through to the popular band, Revolver, bringing it all to a thunderous climax around 6pm, was phenomenal. The Bourne Events Team succeeded in providing a veritable cornucopia of activities, to satisfy all ages, and they deserve a massive vote of thanks from all of us who were present. This year, much more emphasis had been placed on the Santa’s Grotto feature in Wake House, with activities on hand for the beaming, excited youngsters as they waited to meet their favourite elderly gent. The transformation of the rooms was staggering, and there had been many hours of toil put in by many volunteers to make it all run so smoothly. Huge thanks go to Bourne Academy, Gather ’N’ Sew, The Craft Centre, Waterside Nursery, Santa’s elves, (whose wrapping skills are now more finely honed than ever), Sainsburys and Two Jays for their support, S.K.D.C. for their kind sponsorship, and particularly to Debbie and Roy from Wake House, for their tireless help and patience! Once again, the day provided an opportunity for some of our extremely talented local musicians and dancers to showcase their talents on the Main Stage, and the standard of performance was outstanding. The Bourne in Business group kindly provided sponsorship for the stage, whilst Larkfleet Homes sponsored the programmes. There was a tremendous response to both the Methodist Church Christmas Tree Festival and the Town Hall Art Exhibition, whilst the wide range of fairground rides, craft stalls and food outlets saw a brisk trade all afternoon. The long-awaited moment duly arrived when, at 4.30pm, Santa Claus, (assisted by Bourne’s Mayor, Paul Fellows, with wife Judi and local multi-medal-winning athlete, Josh Waring, in attendance), performed the honours, and once again, the lights were beaming brightly on the tree and along the crowded streets. Meanwhile, in the Discovering Magazines tent, after a breath-taking session of having blown up hundreds of purple balloons to gift to the eager children, the exhausted crew were remarking on how everything in the balloon business has suddenly rocketed in price since last year – that’s inflation for you! Finally, the Bourne Events Team would like to extend sincere thanks to everyone who played a part in making Bourne’s Magical Fayre such an enjoyable and successful day. Now firmly established on Bourne’s calendar, this day provides the perfect opportunity to show off what a wonderful little gem of a town we’re lucky to be living in, with such excellent community spirit. j anua ry 2018

How do I Legally Separate? A “legal separation” is not an expression that a family lawyer recognises. Any separation between married couples, or indeed cohabiting couples, is legal. What people probably mean is, a separation that formally ends the relationship, such as the start of the two year separation period, needed as a ground for divorce.

Gowers Surveyors are a local independent firm of Chartered Surveyors and Chartered Building Engineers, specialising in Period Property Building Surveys. We will provide you with a professional assessment of your prospective purchase so you are fully aware of what you are buying.

Our comprehensive service is designed to help you buy and understand your new home; explaining repair and maintenance issues and how old buildings ‘work’ along with advice on listed buildings, legal matters etc. We have a wealth of experience in particular with larger and historic properties and take pride in our attention to detail, pragmatic approach, quality of service and approachable manner. The term doesn’t really apply to cohabiting couples, because cohabitation is not legal to start with. If you want to obtain legal rights as a cohabitee, please see your solicitor about a Cohabitation Agreement. Concentrating on the relationship that is protected by law, namely marriage, if you and your spouse are certain that your marriage is over, you may not want to start divorce proceedings straightaway. However, there may be complicated financial issues that need dealing with before waiting for a two year separation period. In this situation, a Separation Deed can be drafted which has the same effect as a consent financial order in divorce, except it hasn’t been approved at court. But it is enforceable as a contract and, if need be, can be used in court proceedings to ensure the terms agreed are carried out. Just remember, once you are separated from your spouse, whether you want to refer to it as a legal separation or not, both of you still have the same rights, one against another in respect of the assets in the marriage, be they capital, income or pensions. Don’t assume that the longer the separation, the weaker the case for sharing your assets will be. Do consult a Family Law specialist if you have any doubt about this. “Defined Benefit Pension” Transfer Values ‘Shooting Up’ by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd

T

here has been a lot of press about “Final Salary”, (also known as “Defined Benefit”, (D.B.), pension transfers recently and whether they are good or bad things. As always, nothing is ever black and white, so I thought I would revisit the article we published this time last year. Great care needs to be taken when looking at these types of pensions, and I ensure that people understand the pros and cons of giving up the guarantees that are inherent in a final salary pension scheme. Six million people with D.B. pensions have seen their transfer values increase in the last year. Under the rules of most D.B. schemes, workers have the right to swap their pension entitlement for a transfer value, to be reinvested in a pension plan in their own name. Some of the values are substantially more than a year ago. For someone with a pension income worth £20,000 at retirement, it is not uncommon to be offered thirty times that amount in other words, £600,000.

But, while selling the rights to a D.B. pension may be attractive for some people, there can also be significant disadvantages. ‘Pressure off’ After working for thirty years for a credit card company, Peter was made redundant. He found it hard to get another job and found himself living on benefits. As a result, he was advised to sell his D.B. pension. He was originally offered a transfer value of £505,000. A year later, that had jumped by 12%, to £567,000, which he accepted. He re-invested into a drawdown pension, which currently pays him £25,000 a year. He says, “It has taken so much pressure off my shoulders, and I am a lot happier”, and added, “It has given me my life back; I can’t recommend it enough.” This all sounds fantastic - But Peter is now paying management charges, he is taking a relatively large proportion of his fund as income, and he has lost his guarantees. His pension income is now dependent upon the amount of money which is in his pot; if

investment returns are lower than anticipated, he could face having to reduce his income or the very real possibility of the money running out altogether. What is a Defined Benefit pension? Workers with these pensions know exactly how much they will receive in retirement and it is guaranteed. Pension income is based upon the member’s salary and length of service, and usually carries some kind of inflation proofing. Workers with Defined Contribution schemes save into a pension pot, which they then use to buy a retirement income. The size of the pot often depends upon investment market performance which, as we know, can fall as well as rise. The methodology used by actuaries to calculate transfer values relies on them making a number of assumptions as to the member’s pension at normal retirement, then how much capital is required to secure this income, before discounting this to today’s value. Low interest rates filter into these calculations and lead to a higher transfer value. Each type of scheme has its own benefits: Defined Contribution pensions can offer: ● A more flexible retirement income. ● The possibility of extra tax-free cash. ● Easier inheritance, as transferred funds can be passed on to heirs.

44

But keeping a Defined Benefit pension is sensible for many people, as it offers:

● Risk-free income, which does not depend on the ups and downs of the stock market.

● Certainty. Such pensions pay an income for life - often higher than that which would be sustainable over the long-term with a D.C. pot of the same value.

It’s fair to say that, in the majority of cases, you are better off served by staying in the Final Salary Scheme, where the guarantees are very valuable. However, in some cases the potential for flexible income

● Inflation protection.

payments can be useful, especially for someone retiring early. This is a very complex area of advice and requires a specialist qualification for the adviser; there are many areas to consider and attention must be given to longterm objectives, not just today’s issues.

4Gee Up Your Broadband

by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC

A

little over a year ago, I wrote an article that discussed the use of 4G broadband in areas where the standard broadband services were poor. Although many additional rural areas have been improved since then, there are still many home and business owners in South Lincolnshire who still struggle with poor broadband speeds via their phone lines. Since writing that article, I have installed many 4G networks in the villages around Bourne into areas where the 4G signal is strong and a reliable service is available. Speeds from 30 to 75mbps have been achieved in areas where the customers were limping along on under 2mbps and sometimes less than 1mbps via their BT lines. This 4GEE Home service from EE has improved in recent months and they now offer two types of modem, both with wireless and wired LAN connectivity. The availability of data packages has also been increased and

they now have plans from 10Gb a month to a chunky 200Gb per month for data-heavy families with teenagers.

• To test the speed, open an internet browser on your phone and go to the website http:// speedof.me

This is still far more expensive than receiving broadband via your standard BT phone line but may be worth the cost for some families and businesses, as life seems to revolve around internet access more and more as the months pass.

Run the SpeedOf.Me test at least three to four times to see what speed you can achieve via 4G. Note that the speed will vary at various locations in the house/ office so you should look for the best signal, and this will be where to install your 4G router.

How Do I Test for Availability of the Service?

If the tests go well and you want to switch, then you can place an order direct with EE and your device normally ships within a couple of days. You do not have to cancel your existing broadband to do this, as the service does not require your land line to be reassigned.

Of course, this service is only available to those that have a good 4G network signal from EE. • To test for this, you’ll need someone who has an EE enabled device, such as a mobile phone. • Turn off your Wifi connection on the phone and wait a few minutes. • Look at the top of the phone to see whether a 3G or 4G connection is indicated.

t’s arrived - 2018 is here and you’re probably still feeling hungover from all the food and drink that you quaffed over Christmas and New Year. But well done, you survived the in-laws, you faked that smile when you got yet another pair of socks. You put on a brave face whilst being made to wear that awful jumper and now it’s time to knuckle down and wait for spring … or is it? We ran a very successful “Early Bird” campaign last year that focussed on coming to market ahead of the pack, to grab the buyers before your neighbours

decided to sell. Well, guess what, we are at it again because it worked. We sold many homes in and around Bourne during the first few months of last year and I expect the same again this time around, so give us a call and we’ll be happy to help you get a great price without the fuss and the drama. Remember, it’s never too late or too early to make a move happen if you need to. It’s about choosing an agent with a “can do” attitude, a fantastic sales record and award-winning customer service. That is Newton Fallowell and we are here when you need us.

Discovering . . . Dad’s Army in Bourne

Rex Needle

T

he Home Guard was a volunteer army which defended these islands against invasion during the Second World War although it is widely regarded with some amusement today.

which the enemy could be repelled, initially armed with makeshift kit and equipment although the men were eventually issued with proper uniforms and conventional weapons.

This part time organisation which became known as Dad’s Army because most of the volunteers were too old for regular military service, has won a place of affection in our national life through the television comedy series but behind the humour was a serious purpose.

The Bourne company commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Horace Stanton, a local solicitor, had a total strength of 339 men with responsibilities for guarding public utilities such as electricity sub-stations, the railway stations at Bourne and Twenty, Braceborough reservoir and the waterworks at Wilsthorpe, the crossroads at Witham and Northorpe and other strategic points on main roads around their sector.

War was declared on 3rd September 1939 and the government soon began recruiting the Local Defence Volunteers or LDV, the name later changed to the Home Guard, which became the main protection for Britain until peace came in 1945. Most able-bodied men were already in the forces and those left were either too young, too old, unfit or in reserved occupations, yet by the end of June 1940, the total of volunteers had exceeded one million and this number did not fall until they were stood down in December 1944 although the Home Guard was not actually disbanded until the following year. Their objective was to delay an invasion force long enough for the regular army to form a front line from

Fortunately, the crisis arrangements were never needed. Colonel Stanton issued his last order on 22nd December 1944 when the tide of the war had turned in the Allies’ favour and the Home Guard was being stood down. A total of 1,600 men from the town and district had passed through the ranks of the Bourne battalion and three men died while serving. One of his last tasks was the handing in of arms and equipment because by then a formidable armoury had been amassed including 878 rifles, 400 Sten guns, 56 Bren guns and 54 Lewis machine guns, eight anti-tank rifles, 700,000 rounds of small arms ammunition and 100 hand grenades. Not one of them had been fired in combat.

Legal Corner

Property - (More than a Board Game) Advice from Richard Wood – Double & Megson

Most of us will have played the game of Monopoly at Christmas, resulting in long hours of fun or, perhaps, disagreement over the “rules”. From a young age we develop a keen interest in the concept of ownership, but not necessarily risk. As adults, we need to be aware, and that is where professionals come in. We can see solicitors or licensed conveyancers to assist with our purchase. Advice can be given on the restrictions over a property and, more positively, the rights attached to it such as rights of way. When we buy a home, we need to take care to consider various risks, and enquiries called “searches” usually assist us with our decisions. With regard to the physical condition of a home, we should think whether we need a more detailed report from a surveyor, even with new-build property. We need to be aware that sometimes there can be boundary issues or even potential

disagreements with our neighbour. Most people find that owning property is fortunately a good and happy experience in the main. The effort we all put in at the beginning normally pays off. Procedurally, South Kesteven became a Compulsory Registration Zone in 1989, which means that any transfer of ownership results in registration of a property at the Land Registry. The benefits are that the title deeds are summarised electronically at the Land Registry. This helps reduce risk concerning damaged deeds and having to look at a large bundle of deeds every time there is a transfer. The important provisions are held electronically. Any property held by the owner from before 1989 may be registered for a relatively small charge on a voluntary basis and this can reduce the work later on.

FOR almost a decade, Safe Local Trades has been championing consumers through an online service providing thousands of customers with easy access to reliable and reputable tradesmen. With consumer confidence and working tirelessly to force out rogue and cowboy traders across the 16:45 Peterborough area, Safe Local Trades and its director, Eileen Le Voi, have received a number of awards for this community-focussed service. And now Eileen has launched a sister company to the service which has seen over 11,000 local reviews being left for tried-and-tested traders. Safe Local Services will offer recommended and vetted services, from accountants to dog groomers and from hypnotherapists to tattooists. Despite being in the early stages, a number of services – which Eileen is currently limited to three per category for the first year of business – have already signed up. These include financial advisers, HR consultants, beauty therapists and many more. Eileen explained, “Since Safe Local Trades was established in 2008, we have been asked for recommendations on dozens of different services outside the remit of tradesmen – hence we are now delighted to be able to launch Safe Local Services.

“The aim is again to provide consumers with professionals, by offering peace of mind when instructing a service. Each service will undergo a stringent vetting process, have its own profile, gallery of images and a chance for consumers to leave their own feedback and reviews. We have found, over the past nine years, that consumers trust our recommendations. However, the benefit is two-fold, as professions becoming a member of Safe Local Services will benefit from an already trusted and highly respected service - as well as a reputable brand name. Gaining the Safe Local Services seal of approval will provide instant consumer confidence and trust in them and their business, and ultimately win more business.” Spaces for services will be limited to a “first come, first served” basis, and anyone keen to be featured on Safe Local Services within the PE postcode can register their interest now, at www.safelocalservices. com/service-providers january 2018

Pets and Vets

Vaccinate Your Pets - They’ll Love You For It! by Zoe Reeve from Alder Vets

I

nfectious diseases used to kill thousands of pets every year until the introduction of vaccinations. We do still see cases in practice, but there are fewer outbreaks of diseases than there were years ago, as most owners will now vaccinate their pets. However, this needs to be continued, otherwise we will end up with a similar situation to the human disease of measles, which has resulted from children not being protected with the MMR vaccine. It is worth remembering that many of the diseases which we vaccinate against are killers; puppies that contract parvovirus can easily die from the disease, and other diseases, including distemper and infectious hepatitis, can be potentially fatal to dogs. Parvovirus, distemper and infectious hepatitis are now licensed for use every three years, but the leptospirosis and the kennel cough vaccination is still licensed to give annually, so your dog does need to be seen by a vet every year. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease, which means that it can be passed from animal to human; it can cause a very serious infection in humans called Weil’s disease.

yearly and is combined with the myxomatosis vaccine, and the VHD strain 2 is licensed six-monthly, so two injections are needed every year. With any drug which is given, there is always the possibility of an adverse reaction, but serious adverse reactions are extremely rare. All vaccinations have undergone rigorous testing to ensure they are safe for our animals, and although some animals may still have a degree of immunity against a disease after the annual recommendations, it is still advised to keep vaccinating at the licensed time. Some people prefer to use homeopathic vaccines for their pets, but we have seen dogs still contracting diseases, following these vaccines, and there is also no evidence to suggest that homeopathic vaccines are powerful enough to prevent infectious diseases. Prevention is better than cure, so please get your pets booked in with a vet if they have lapsed with any of their vaccines.

In cats, we routinely vaccinate against cat flu, leukaemia and panleucopenia. If an unvaccinated cat contracts cat flu, it can be very unpleasant for the cat; it is highly contagious to other unvaccinated cats, and it can be fatal in kittens. Leukaemia and panleucopenia are potentially fatal diseases and cats require yearly injections for prevention of all of these. In rabbits, there are two diseases to vaccinate against; myxomatosis which is very common in the UK and is usually fatal, and VHD (viral haemorrhagic disease), which is also fatal if contracted, and doesn’t usually give any symptoms before the death of the rabbit. There are now two strains of VHD that can be vaccinated against; the VHD strain 1 is vaccinated

Live Jazz Sessions at Toft

D

o you enjoy listening to live music? Do you like jazz? Then the Toft House Hotel at Toft, near Bourne, is the place to be. Now in its eighth year, this hotel continues to hold live jazz sessions every four weeks on a Thursday, at The George Suite. You can sit back and enjoy listening to an exciting mix of Traditional, Dixieland, Swing and Classic Jazz, with an occasional Mainstream surprise, in pleasant surroundings that have a relaxed and informal setting.

The jazz band is called The Toft House All Stars, assembled with professional jazz musicians by John Ellmer, and having a regular rhythm section consisting of John Stuart (banjo/ guitar), ex-Temperance Seven; Bill Coleman (bass), ex-Kenny Ball’s Jazzmen; and John Ellmer (drums), The Mardi Gras Jazz Band. A different front-line is scheduled for every jazz session and features guest appearances by leading trumpet, clarinet/ saxophone and trombone players who perform, or have performed, regularly with such well known jazz bands as Acker Bilk, Chris Barber, Kenny Ball, Alex Welsh and Humphrey Lyttleton. Well known jazz musicians that have featured with the Toft House All Stars on numerous occasions include, on trumpet, Mike Cotton, Ben Cummings, Alan Gresty and Peter Rudeforth; on clarinet/saxophone, John Crocker, Richard Excell, Amy Roberts and Julian Marc Stringle; and on trombone, Ian Bateman, Jackie Free, Roy Williams and Graham Woodhouse. Julian Marc Stringle was voted best clarinettist at the British Jazz Awards 2005. Amy Roberts was voted winner in The Rising Star Category at the British Jazz Awards 2009 and 2011, and winner of the Miscellaneous Category at the British Jazz Awards 2015. Occasionally, complete front-line musicians appear together at the Toft House Hotel from various leading jazz bands, such as The Magnificent 7 Jazz Band (with Richard Excell, Amy Roberts, Ben Cummings and Ian Blackman), The Outswingers Jazz Band (that perform when Test Matches are being played at The Lords Cricket Ground, with Mike Cotton, Julian Marc Stringle and Roy Williams) and DixieMix (East Anglia’s Hottest Dixieland Band that were selected to provide entertainment for Rod Stewart’s five UK stadiums tour in June 2014, with Simon Nelson, trumpet, Peter Oxborough, clarinet/ saxophone, and Chris Wigley, trombone). In the Spotlight

Morton New Day - in the Words of The Rev. Andy McManus

T

en years ago, I was the Police Inspector for this part of South Lincolnshire. To my surprise, I am now the Minister of what I consider to be the liveliest church in the area! We are the Baptist Chapel, opposite Morton Post Office. We are part of the Baptist Union of Great Britain, and have the unusual name ‘Morton New Day’, (as there is another Morton Baptist in Lincolnshire, and the other church in our village has the word Baptist in its name).

Last year, we had a complete refurbishment of the premises, including knocking down internal walls, new electronics, lighting and much more. We have new people on our leadership team, new services, new clubs, and are really becoming part of the fabric of both Morton and beyond. I only started thinking about various faiths around fifteen years ago. As a, then, Senior Investigating Officer (SIO), I explored the evidence, and to my genuine amazement found Christianity had real, tangible proof supporting the story of Jesus. I kind of kept exploring, and found myself earning a Degree, with a distinction in Apologetics (two-way debate) explaining Faith. This has helped me immensely as, when you get alongside most people long enough, they naturally start asking the ‘big’ questions, which we all have deep down.

Saturday: Wedding!

“So, what do you do?” I hear you ask. Well, this week looks like…

Sunday: Full service 10.30am, Family service 4pm, Dyke service 6.30pm. Monday: Brownies 4.30pm. Tuesday: Tots (0-3yrs) 10am, Hot meal 12.30pm, White Heather 2pm, Lighthouse (4-10yrs) 4.30pm, Quiet Prayer 8pm. Wednesday: Stan’s Study 10am, Home Groups 7.30pm, Band 8pm. Thursday: Prayer 9am, Coffee morning 10.30am, YYC (11-15yrs) 6.30pm, Band practice 8.30pm, BMRT 9pm. Friday: Social activities (film nights, etc). Saturday: “Men’s Brekky” (Wild Heart café) 8am, “Women’s Brekky” 10am, Fish and Chip quiz 6pm. So…we are a church, but maybe not like many assume. I have the privilege of being a Trustee for a large African charity. Their churches are open all week, they are the heart of the community, and are great fun. That is our heart, here in Morton. We aim to be welcoming and relevant to all. Check us out, read my blog, and more at www.mortonnewday.co.uk, (say it out loud…it is supposed to rhyme!), or even better come and see what “church” REALLY looks like! Not forgetting … We also have our own shop opposite the Chapel. We go camping in May and have summer clubs. We enjoy life!

Police Patrol

Winter Motoring Tips by Sergeant 600 Rachel Blackwell

L

incolnshire has one of the highest rates of road collisions and road deaths in the whole country. In January 2017, three people lost their life on Lincolnshire’s roads. Closer to home, in the same month, there were sixty-five collisions across the Bourne and Stamford area, nineteen of which resulted in injury.

The road surface may be slippery, which can increase your stopping distance on icy roads up to ten times, compared to when on a dry road surface.

Winter road conditions require a different approach to driving and mean it’s that time of year to give your car a winter M.O.T. to ensure its suitability for the changing weather. Most of these points seem obvious, but you’d be amazed at how many of the following were factors in the accidents that happened locally.

• Equipment - Equip yourself with a torch, blanket, de-icer, warm clothing and snacks, in case of any unexpected longer journey times.

Vehicle Maintenance • Lights - Make sure your lights are in good working order. Are they clean / free from grime which would diminish their brightness? • Tyres - Ensure there is sufficient tread on your tyres and that they are inflated to the correct level. Remember the simple 20p coin test, where the outer band of the coin should be obscured when inserted into the tread if it is above the legal limit. Tyres well maintained could be the difference between avoiding a collision and serious injury.

• Screen wash - The screen wash bottle should be topped up and at a concentration that does not freeze.

• Heating - Heating in your car should be in good working order so the windscreen can be demisted and to prevent you from freezing. • Vision - Before setting off, check all your windows and mirrors are clear so you have an unrestricted view of the road. Vehicle Security Pre-heating your vehicle on your drive might give you the added time advantage in terms of being defrosted in time for you to leave, but we regularly see local vehicles stolen by opportunist thieves who operate after a frosty night, trawling to look for cars running on driveways.

How the Police and Advanced Motorists use “POWDER” for their Vehicle Safety Checks

P

atrick Hunt is Managing Director of Go Go Go Intensive and a member of The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). Go Go Go Intensive is the only Intensive Driving School in the UK to be affiliated to the IAM, the UK’s leading road safety charity.

Now January is here, we are well and truly into the worst motoring weather of the year, and you need to make sure that your vehicle is in tip top condition. An easy way to remember the essential safety checks is to use the acronym, POWDER, which is used by the police and advanced motorists and taken from “Roadcraft”, the police driver’s handbook. These checks only take a few minutes and help you ensure that your vehicle is always fit to drive.

Mandatory running lights (side lights, main and dipped beam). Brake and reversing lights. Indicators and hazard warning lights. Number plate light (rear). High intensity lights. Emergency warning lights (blue, headlight flash; rear red, police cars only). Interior – instrument warning lights.

Petrol Ensure that you have sufficient petrol, diesel or electrical charge to complete your journey. Oil

Check the oil level and make sure the filler cap and dipstick are secure.

Water

Check the radiator water level, including the coolant/antifreeze mixture.

Complete a visual examination of the exterior of your vehicle, looking for insecure items or damage. Check the windscreen for stone chips and cracks.

Electrics Verify the operation of your vehicle’s electrical system.

Audible warning systems (horn/two tone horns). Windscreen wipers (front and rear). Rubber

Wheels- wheel nuts secured to correct torque setting.

Tyres – tread depth at least 1.6mm across 75% of the tyre, with no cuts or bulges in the tyre wall. Check tyre pressures.

Keep your car in good running condition, and it will keep you safe and in control on the road. It takes a short amount of time to check these important functions, but can save money, fuel and even lives in the long run. These checks do not replace regular servicing by a competent mechanic, where many other safety checks and vehicle adjustments are made.
