Welcome to Your July Issue.

At times, it seems like there’s nothing good to be said about our wonderful N.H.S. The media regularly highlight all manner of issues, whilst the recent General Election was in part fought amidst claims and counter-claims from the major parties about how our healthcare ought to be run.

It’s encouraging therefore, that we can see both Medical Practices in Bourne striving to achieve the very best for their patients. Last month’s feature on the Hereward Practice is followed this time by the Galletly Practice. Read how their new appointment system is being hailed nationally for its innovation and quality.

High summer is upon us and the school holidays are in sight. Make the most of what our local communities are offering, by checking out our “What’s on section”, and let’s hope this warm weather stays with us just a bit longer!

This month, we can smile as our youngsters bask in that post-exams state of euphoria, which might even extend to their “euphoricising” to excess at Smith’s eleventh annual Beer Festival on July 7th, 8th and 9th. Talking of celebrating, there’s also the Alder Veterinary Practice reaching twenty years in business, having opened their Bourne operation, (no pun intended!) early in 2015. See what they can offer you and your pets in our pull-out section.

Finally, my attention was caught by an announcement in a Bourne Building Society recently. On what was a particularly hot afternoon, with the staff coping magnificently with their computer system down, the hand-written exhortation for me to “bare with them, until it was fixed” almost got me removing a few garments!

Stop and Shop … Why Not? The opening last month of “Stop and Shop” grocery and offlicence on North Street, Bourne, brought some much-needed life and colour to a section of one of our main shopping streets.

To have seen a row of five shops lying empty for so long has been presenting a rather depressing image to everyone, residents and visitors alike. So, it has been a breath of fresh air that has now blown in, as the ambitious Mr and Mrs Maristani have injected a boost to the town, by occupying the middle one of the five.

They could see that Bourne has been recently witnessing many losses on the high street, as the grip imposed by the

supermarkets seems to have tightened.

Their grocery shop now places an emphasis on Eastern European lines, whether that is with tinned and packaged products, or in the wide array of Polish and Lithuanian beers and spirits. There are plenty of English brands on the well-stocked and carefully laidout shelves too, and the section offering fresh vegetables and fruit looked both fresh and competitively priced on my

recent visit there. My eye was also taken with the very tempting display of cold meats and continental cheeses.

Mr Maristani has been really pleased with the welcome that his staff have received since the shop opened, and he is confident that more and more of Bourne’s residents will visit, to try out some of his tempting produce. After all, variety is the spice of life!

'Rebirth' Exhibition at Bourne Town Hall

O

n the weekend of July 22nd and 23rd, Bourne will see the old Town Hall open its doors and welcome the public to view and celebrate the artistic talents of local school children. Throughout June, Helen-Graham has been working with children from Bourne Westfield Primary Academy, Bourne Abbey C. of E. Academy, Edenham C. of E. Primary School, Elsea Park C. of E. Primary Academy, Morton C. of E. Primary School, Baston C. of E. Primary School and Bourne Academy to produce work which will form Bourne’s first-ever collaborative schools arts installation.

Helen is a local artist with a wealth of experience with large-scale installations and has worked on many community art projects. Having relocated to Bourne from Liverpool in 2014, Helen wanted to do something for her new hometown and work with local teachers and children to produce an installation that everyone in Bourne could enjoy. Along with Helen, the project has been directed by Rebecca Beavis, Arts Director at Bourne Westfield Primary Academy, and Lucy Lawson, Art teacher at Bourne Academy, and supported by all of the teachers within the involved schools.

The exhibition is entitled “Rebirth”, in recognition of the vision to return the building to its former glory and sympathetically convert it for use as a small Community Arts Centre. The children will be making a butterfly which will form part of the two-thousandstrong butterfly installation in what was the old courtroom upstairs in the Town Hall. The exhibition will also include a Bourne Schools Art Exhibition, and a variety of work will be displayed from all of the participating schools downstairs. Visitors to the exhibition will be invited to leave their comments on a working wall upstairs and be able to see the journey of the installation through a display of photographs taken by students at Bourne Academy.

Following an official opening of the installation on Wednesday July 19th, which will be attended by a representative from each school, local dignitaries and project partners, (which include Sainsbury’s and Tesco, who have kindly sponsored the refreshments for the evening). Emma Cuddeford, Stamford’s newly-elected Poet Laureate, will be attending the event to announce the winners of a schools’ poetry competition that will run alongside the art installation.

The exhibition will open its doors to the public on Saturday and Sunday 22nd/23rd July from 10am to 4pm.

Bourne Galletly Medical Practice - “An example of innovation and quality” and now set to double in size As a Medical Practice, we recognised the need for increased GP services several years ago and approached NHS England with proposals to provide for the needs of patients as a result of this growth. This was initially met by a Practice expansion which was completed in 2010. We have now finalised plans, with the support of South Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group (SLCCG) and NHS England, for a further expansion programme, commencing in September of this year. This new development will see the Practice almost double in size to become the largest practice in Lincolnshire. This additional space will provide a further eleven clinical rooms and a full operating suite for day surgery. The build will be completed in May 2018.

These are exciting times, and the development will allow for the introduction of a “Primary Care” home within Bourne, allowing for a much broader range of services to be provided, many of which currently require patients to travel to Peterborough City Hospital. Additionally, as a Practice, we have advanced plans to introduce mental health, social services and community services into the building, in order to provide full holistic care.

In April 2016, the Practice became the South and South West Lincolnshire Training Hub, working with Health Education East Midlands. This work involves the encouragement of medical student places, GP registrar places and the broadening of the primary care workforce, including clinical pharmacists, physician associates, paramedics and other such healthcare professionals, in order to assist the delivery

of services. In this way, the Practice is playing a pivotal part in the diversification of the local healthcare workforce, in order to meet the growing demands on the health service.

As a result of this work, we firmly believe that the future needs of Bourne and the surrounding area’s patients will be well catered for and well ahead of many other areas, both locally and nationally.

In the summer of 2014, we recognised that the demand on GP services was increasing and that it was not acceptable for patients to be waiting for two to three weeks on occasion to see a GP. We therefore introduced a new appointment system which ensures that all patients receive the advice and care they require on the day they require it. This new and innovative approach has been recognised by both the Department for Health and the Royal College of General Practitioners, who are now highlighting our appointment system to all GP Practices across the country as an example of innovation and quality. By working differently and therefore more efficiently, we have coped with the growing demand, and our Practice list is fully open to any new patients in the town.

In the Hot Seat

IN THE HOT SEAT This month, one of our regular contributors, the popular owner of Renu, (Bourne’s premier health, beauty and fitness studios), takes time out of her busy schedule to relax in our “Hot Seat”.

Claire’s first love was dancing, spending her spare time as a child taking dance lessons and progressing to teach both children and adults, ballroom and Latin American dancing. With Jayne Fonda’s introducing aerobics to the world in the eighties, it was a natural progression for Claire to turn to dance aerobics, leading her to become a trainer for other instructors, and presenting at fitness conventions around the country and abroad. Somewhere along the way, she also became a general manager of a large health club, before branching out on her own with Renu.

She started the business in 2006 on West Street and moved to Abbey Road in 2013 after renovating the former Marquis of Granby pub. “This renovation and move is probably one of my most challenging, but favourite, personal achievements”, Claire explains, “but I have no desire to do it again though!”

Claire is very close to her family and they continue to be a huge support. She continues, “I would not have been able to make my business achievements without them, and spending time with my grownup daughters is still my favourite thing to do”.

Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood?

I was born at Boston Hospital and lived in Spalding until we moved to Peterborough when I was six. My favourite memory would be coming in from school on a cold day and the house smelling of baking and dinner cooking. My mum would warm my hands under her arms!

Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why?

My two daughters Emilie and Sarah. I learned most of my management skills from parenting them!

Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why?

Kevin McCloud – presenter of Grand Designs. He always has something profound to say at the end of each programme that makes me want to ask him round for dinner.

If there was one thing which you could change about Bourne, what would it be and why?

I love Bourne! It would be nice to have a few more shops and restaurants in the high street to help attract more people to socialise and shop here, rather than driving elsewhere though.

What advice would you give to a “sixteen-yearold you”?

Have confidence in your own abilities and speak up and ask for the things you want in life. Don’t have a frizzy perm when they become all the rage … and don’t over-pluck your eyebrows!

Would you Like to De-bloat this Summer?

aining a flat stomach seems to be one of the most difficult things to achieve. A bloated stomach can be a problem for even the slimmest of people, but what is the answer?

It’s true that the right type of exercise is essential for weight control, body tone and delaying the signs of ageing, and it will certainly help in reducing belly fat; but the foods that we eat, the way in which we eat them, and the ability of our body to digest these foods, will also be factors in stomach bloating.

Did you know that if you took out your intestines and opened them out, they would create a surface area that

would fill a tennis court? This whole area is covered in cells and receptors that send signals into your blood stream and around your body. Toxins, food sensitivities, allergies or lack of the right nutrients, will all be picked up by these cells in the stomach and, whilst your body may still function, it will send you a signal that it is not happy. Signals include bloating, gas, distension and constipation, to name but a few!

The truth is that flat stomachs are made in the kitchen, and whilst exercise will make a real difference to your digestion and body shape, you simply cannot out-train a bad diet! Here are a few things you can do to improve your digestion. ● Sit down and spend time to enjoy your meals. Put your fork down between mouthfuls and chew your food until it is soft. Remember, it’s rude to talk with your mouth full, and stay away from all screens and mobile devices whilst you enjoy your meal. (It seems that Granny really did know best!) ● Keep sugars, caffeine and alcohol to a minimum. ● Drink plenty of water. ● Eat fresh green fibrous vegetables. ● Take a daily walk and keep your stress levels to a minimum.

A Visit to the Osteopath - Wise Words of Comfort

F

or many, the unknown can be daunting and become a reason not to do something. Each year, more and more people decide to see an osteopath, but what exactly happens there? Please note that the title ‘osteopath’ is protected by law, and it is illegal for anyone to call themselves an osteopath, unless they are registered with the General Osteopathic Council, which sets and promotes high standards of competency, conduct and safety. Our licence to practise needs to be renewed each year.

Typically, a first appointment will last between forty-five minutes and an hour. We ask in confidence about your general health, any medication being prescribed and your medical history, including any previous episodes, illnesses or operations.

You need not be alone, if the company of another person would benefit you in any way.

Next, we look at how you move; asking you to actively perform certain movements typically while standing, and we observe the effect on your condition, posture and mobility.

Then, whilst lying on the examination couch, we look at your passive movements where we assess the health of your joints, ligaments and tissues by using a highly developed sense of touch, called palpation. We do this to check the range and quality of their movements and often more importantly, how they interact together. Sometimes, we need to perform other special tests such as testing your reflexes or taking your blood pressure.

By combining all of this information, we then formulate a diagnosis which we will explain to you. If, for some reason, you needed someone more specialist, or we suspect a more serious

condition that osteopathic treatment is not suitable for, we would always refer you with a letter to someone appropriate, which may be your G.P. or local hospital.

Before treatment begins, we discuss the treatment benefits, any risks, the likely expectations, how many sessions are needed and your consent for us to treat you.

Treatment is hands-on, and involves skilled manipulation of the spine and joints, and massage of soft tissues. The type and intensity of treatment will vary depending on you and your tolerances, so it remains comfortable.

Finally, we will tell you about any self-help measures and advice on exercise or stretching, to assist your recovery and prevent recurrence or worsening of symptoms.

Words from the (NEW) Mayor Councillor Paul Fellows

Wow! Judi and I are now Mayor and Mayoress of Bourne. It is a huge honour and I have said that we will go to the opening of an envelope if we are asked! This may seem that I am trivialising the post but I really am not. We want to represent Bourne in any way that we can, both outside the town and, more importantly, within it.

It took very little time for us to ‘take the chains’ on a visit, when we joined the new Mayor of Grantham, at his Mayor-making ceremony, and then the team at Tesco for a coffee and a cake. Led by Vivien, their Community Champion, they kick-started the fundraising for ‘Run for Life’.

We welcomed both ride and stall-owners to the eversuccessful Bourne Festival. Many congratulations to the Round Table, with a big thank you to their chairman, Paul Martin, for his welcome and a much appreciated pint of real ale. This is one of the major events now embedded in Bourne’s calendar.

Another major event was the Classic Car and Bike Carnival on June 18th. I hope you managed to treat Dad by showing him the car of his dreams, one that you probably can’t afford to buy him yet, so you chose an ice cream or burger instead!

I write this with more than one aching muscle as I’ve just done a 7.00 a.m. till 3.00 p.m. shift at Bourne Textile Services. This is part of my work experience project.

During my year in office, I’m offering to do a day’s work in any Bourne company, in order to get a wider understanding of people in Bourne. A big thank you to Richard and David at BTS for making this possible, and arranging for me to follow this up with a day on one of their lorries.

There will be a number of social events during the coming year, the first being “The Mayor’s Old School Disco” at the Centre at Elsea Park in September. This will be an event for adults and the price will include a school dinner, the disco itself and a performance by the school band. School uniform is compulsory, so you’ve got plenty of time to hunt out your old flares and micromini skirts!

I am attempting to write a diary of my year as Mayor with a blog. For someone that hasn’t even got a mobile phone, this is quite an aspiration! I will be able to go into far more detail about my work experience adventures, so please take a look at: bournewithpride.com.

Mealtime Mayhem - Coping Strategies

M

ealtimes are an opportunity for families to enjoy being together. However, they can be times of stress due to a child’s behaviour, such as the following: s/he won’t sit down, won’t eat, spits out food, eats with fingers, throws food etc.

Encourage child involvement by laying the table, helping prepare the meal, writing a menu. Engage them in food activities, such as taster sessions, blindfold tasting, making pastry or dumplings, cutting food shapes and crazy sandwiches.

Mealtime routine. It is good to eat at the same time every day. This prevents irritability from hunger, overeating, and low blood sugar, leading to cravings for the wrong foods.

Have fun. Use serving dishes at the table and let your children serve themselves, use napkins, placemats etc. Set them an activity of making placemats, coasters or place names. Put flowers on the table or use a tablecloth.

Trying new foods. It can take up to fifteen offerings before a child will actually taste a new food. Let them touch, smell and feel it, using all the senses to become familiar with it. Avoid getting frustrated, shouting, forcing, or blackmailing, (as in “If you don’t eat it you can’t go out to play”). Make mealtimes a positive experience.

Sit down to eat. Our digestion is more efficient if we are sitting upright when we eat, so eating at a table is healthy, and also means that our children are likely to be more disciplined and less distracted. Teach your children to use good table manners and to use cutlery, not fingers.

• If a child can’t finish his food, don’t insist.

Acknowledge what he has eaten.

• Don’t overload your child’s plate. It’s better that they ask for seconds.

• Pudding is not dependent upon eating the main course.

• There are foods we genuinely don’t like. If they really don’t like a specific food, don’t serve it.

• A child should be eating three appropriate meals and two small snacks, evenly spaced throughout the day. (Note : A snack is a small drink and some fruit, raisins, carrot sticks etc, Not crisps, biscuits and chocolate).

• Drinks just before meals will fill a child and reduce their appetite.

• Meals should consist of protein and vegetables with some dairy and some fat. Generally, good fats have vegetable origins, bad fats have meat origins.

• Be aware of portion sizes. A portion fits the palm of the hand of the person eating it.

Gill West – Farewell to the “Smiling Lady on the Bike” A well-known and popular Bourne resident passed away on April 6th this year, following serious injuries received in a road collision on the A15 near Sleaford a fortnight earlier. Mother of two, Gill West, was 61 years old. Gill had left her home village of Morton at the age of five and lived, was schooled, and had worked in Bourne thereafter.

Through her various roles at the Hereward Medical Practice, and formerly with Boots and St Peter’s Hospital and Heritage Care, along with various bar and serving jobs in Bourne, she became known to many as “the smiling lady on the bike”!

Gill had led a very active lifestyle playing as much tennis, swimming, badminton, cycling, dancing (she was a huge fan of ceilidh dance) and her favourite, country walking, as anyone could fit in. Why Gill was liked so much though was because of her ability to encourage others to join in and get to enjoy these activities as well, as many people will be able to testify.

Anyone who came across Gill socially would witness her ability to talk to friend or stranger alike and show great empathy, a reason for her being so well-known and respected in our town. She has left behind a very proud family of husband Lew, (whose words you are now sharing), sons Jamie and Glynn, daughters-in-law, Louise and Shelly, brother Steve, and her “little poppet”, granddaughter Jessica, along with so many people saddened but pleased to have known her.

(What better way to be remembered than that of someone who always had a smile on their face? – Ed.)

Carers’ Sitter Service Needs your Votes!

The Carers’ Sitter Service is appealing to all its friends, supporters and service users to vote online to help them receive a £25,000 Community Award from the Freemasons.

As part of Freemasonry’s 300th anniversary celebrations, the Masonic Charitable Foundation is distributing £3 million to 300 charities across the country, and Carers’ Sitter Service is one of those selected.

Each of the nominated charities will receive a grant, but the public vote will determine how much they 26

receive, ranging from £4,000 to £25,000. Those who want to vote should visit the MCF website www. mcf.org.uk/vote, select the Provincial Grand Lodge of Northamptonshire and Huntingdonshire page and vote for the charity of their choice. The voting period is from June 12th to July 31st.

The Carers’ Sitter Service covers Bourne, Stamford and the Deepings, plus surrounding villages and is a voluntary organisation and a registered charity. They provide a free-of-charge, sitting service for full-time carers who are in need of some respite for a few hours a week,

or whenever they need to attend medical or dental appointments, a trip to the hairdressers, meeting up with a friend, joining a social club, some retail therapy or just some time for themselves. The demands of being a carer means that it is all too easy to become cut off from friends and give up outside activities and hobbies.

The service provides reliable trained volunteer sitters to sit with the carers’ loved one, whilst they have a break which, in turn, also gives the person being cared for someone new to chat to and some welcome companionship.

Churches Together in Bourne Community Fun Day - “Roll on Next Year!”

On Saturday June 10th, CTiB organised their first-ever ‘Community Fun Day’ on the recreation ground. The Churches wanted to show God’s love by doing something for the community and therefore came together and provided an afternoon full of free entertainment. There were bouncy castles, face painting, a barbecue, a cake stall, various stalls displaying charities and information connected to the various Churches, a craft tent and even a Salvation Army emergency canteen vehicle, providing hot/cold drinks, kindly provided by Derbyshire Fire Brigade. The entertainment consisted of music from Bourne Baptist Church Worship Band, the Salvation Army Community Band and two bible stories presented by ‘Open the Book’, (which is a CTiB initiative, alongside Scripture Union, that goes into the primary schools and presents the bible through drama). The Mayor of Bourne, Paul

Fellows alongside his consort, also supported the event.

Chair of CTiB, Captain Wendy Brown, said, “It was a great afternoon, with lots going on; there was a good crowd and it was fabulous to see the Churches working together. This event couldn’t have happened without the support of Bourne Town Council, the Len Pick Trust and Bourne Tesco store and the many volunteers who helped. I would like to thank them all for making this event into a great success – roll on next year!”

AN INVITATION TO SING Stamford based a cappella choir, Woven Chords, is hosting an open evening on 13th July, 7-30pm-9-30pm at Stamford Arts Centre Ballroom. Everyone is welcome to come along and meet our new director, Emmanuel Omuederiaye and join in with a workshop session – FREE! Woven Chords is a natural voice choir and we believe “that if you can talk you can sing,” therefore we are open to all no matter what your ability. Renu Open Day - (Our Claire was There!)

On Tuesday, June 13th, our designer, Emma Gunner accompanied me as I joined a crowd of ladies at a complimentary taster session, which was part of Renu’s “Open Day”. The launch of the Carita facial and skincare range proved very popular, and we both agreed that the thirty minute taster session, and the results from just one treatment, were absolutely amazing. Jess from Carita provided an entertaining introductory talk on the beauty range … and I’m told that there were strawberries, cupcakes and Prosecco in abundance!

Golf Tip Improve your bunker play with shallower divots with Darren Game

When coaching and watching golfers on the course, too many golfers have steep swings and deep divots when playing bunker shots. The sand is driven forwards instead of upwards, resulting in the ball struggling to get the height needed to get out of the bunker.

To achieve a shallower plane and divot, at address make sure your leading hand (left hand for right handed golfers) is slightly cupped. This basically means that the club head is slightly ahead of the hands, with the club face pointing more towards the sky.

When you make your swing now, you will utilise the bounce of the club, ensuring a shallow divot rather than a deep, digging divot. This will send the sand and ball upward with a scooping type action, resulting in the ball finishing outside of the bunker and hopefully close to the hole.

everal weeks ago, one of our horses, an Arab called Sunflower, was diagnosed with sarcoids.

She had quite a few of varying sizes in her pelvic and upper leg area. Sarcoids are common tumours in horses and are generally benign but can be locally invasive. One of these tumours was quite large and was getting bigger. In consultation with our horse vet, we decided to have these masses removed by laser, which would require a sedation and a trip to the horse hospital.

We were very anxious during the wait for the surgery (we stayed with her before and after her operation) and while she was being operated on. I have seen this same anxiety on the faces of my clients as the have waited for their pet’s surgery. Now it was my turn.

As is the case with many people, this horse is very special to us. She really communicates and interacts with us and is very open to people. She had a fantastic upbringing at the stud that bred and backed her, which has resulted in a horse that is not at all sceptical about any of life’s experiences.

I’m pleased to be able to report that all went well with her surgery and she is now beginning to heal. She made it clear that this was painful for the first week and so we had to extend her pain relief. Even though the treatment was needed, we still felt upset that we had put her through all of this, which is a sentiment that many people feel after any traumatic surgery.

We now had to hand our beautiful horse over to our vet and entrust her to his care. This reminded me that my clients do the same with me every day and of the

Bourne in Business - Jason’s Brilliant but Brutal Bike Ride Nets £10,000

I

n our April issue of “Discovering Bourne”, we highlighted an extraordinary challenge about to be undertaken by Jason Skinner, the owner of Bourne’s popular “Dotty Hen Vintage Furniture” shop, who is also a member of the Bourne in Business group. With a friend, he was preparing to cycle from his home in Bourne to that of his mother in Almeria, Southern Spain, a distance of close on 2,000 miles, in order to raise valuable funds for Cancer Research.

Well … he completed this staggering achievement – literally at times!

Here, Jason takes up the story: “We completed the ride in fifteen days’ cycling. We are both fine, no injuries or stiffness or anything (to both our amazement).

We loved cycling through the stunning French countryside and villages and towns. The weather was pretty kind to us too, only getting soaked three times. One of the toughest stages was when we crossed the mountains from France into Spain; we climbed and climbed until we hit the top. The weather was wet and cold, but I think this helped us in the end.

Spain was a different beast altogether; it was hot and barren and some days we just cycled slowly uphill for ninety miles.

It was stunning when we hit the coast and saw the lovely sea and sand but, once we turned inland for the last two stages, the heat picked up again and hit 40 degrees. We set off most mornings at sunrise, to make best use of the cooler temperatures, but by 9 o’clock it was already in the 30s! The final day was by far the hardest, where we had bad roads and really high temperatures, and the ninety-four miles seemed to take forever... but we made it and got a lovely reception from the Mayor and the people of Arboleas.

We just want to thank all the guys at Bourne in Business for their support and help during the making of @Ridespain charity ride.

Changing Times in Civil Disputes

A

t the turn of the century, the rules governing civil disputes (civil litigation) were rewritten. Since then, there have been ongoing changes to the rules including procedures required in certain instances, which we call “protocols”. There are various protocols which deal with aspects of disputes such as landlord and tenant, construction, personal injury, defamation and others. The idea was to ensure that the parties provide sufficient information and documentation to each other about a dispute, at the outset. This is often called “Front Loading”, as it enables each party to have a view at the beginning, so as to decide whether they want to try to settle the matter without going too far. It also enables the court to manage the dispute better, and to try to control the various costs, such as those relating to experts. As a result of this, the parties will often be ordered by the court to agree an instruction to a single joint expert in the field of the dispute.

Historically, some of these costs got out of control, but even under the new system there can be problems with costs. It is for that reason that the court tries to control costs more readily. In more complicated disputes, it specifically tries to manage the budgets of the parties in relation to costs.

There is now a particular emphasis on trying to keep the parties’

costs of a case proportionate to what is in dispute. This means that if a party is arguing about £100,000 in a case, it may be reasonable for them to spend £10,000 on their costs, and then try to seek an order that those costs be reimbursed at the end of the case. However, if there was an argument of say a sum of £15,000 and a party spends £10,000, then they would not realistically be able to recover those costs in their entirety, because that sum would be considered to be out-of-proportion to what was in dispute.

Disputes under £10,000 are usually treated as small claims cases in any event, which means that a successful party might only recover nominal fixed costs.

All parties in every case are now encouraged to see if they can mediate to try to avoid the costs of a trial at the court. Even a person who succeeds in a contested hearing (a trial), may end up having to pay the loser some costs, if a court believed the person who was successful should have agreed to mediate and refused.

Taking into account these changes and, particularly, the principle of ‘proportionality’, it is more essential now than ever before that everyone tries to avoid getting into a situation where they may find themselves in a dispute.

Profitable Pension Planning from Landmark

ecently, I visited a couple who I will call John and Carolyn.

John is 58 and has built up a pension fund of £240,000, whilst Carolyn is 55 in June and has a pension fund of £190,000. They also have some savings of about £30,000. Here is a summary of their situation and their objectives:

earning any income when they retire, they each have an £11,500 personal allowance. If they draw £15,333 from their pensions, the first 25% of this is tax-free, whilst the remaining £11,500 is taxable through the PAYE system. £11,500 is within their nil rate income tax band and therefore attracts no tax

• They would like to stop working, as they don’t really enjoy their jobs.

This satisfies two of their objectives – not paying tax and earning £25 £30,000 pa.

• They would like to minimise their income tax.

• They need an income of £25- £30,000 per year.

• They are not big spenders and do not need any capital initially from their pensions.

• They have two overseas holidays a year.

We would also advise that they both make payments into their existing pensions of £2,880, which will attract tax relief at the basic rate and be increased to £3,600 – this is the maximum contribution allowable if you have no earned income. Even if they have to withdraw extra from their pensions to fund this, there will be a net gain because of the tax relief.

What we also did was to use our cash flow modelling tool to see if they would run out of money before they die, taking their prospective state pensions into account.

Financial planning would be so much easier if we knew exact dates. However, in this case we calculated that even at 100 years old, they still had ample pension pots. This assumes that rules do not change over time, and is based upon our understanding of legislation and levels and bases of taxation, all of which are subject to change. We have also made certain investment return assumptions, which cannot be guaranteed in future.

With the new pension freedom rules in operation since April 2015, it is imperative that you seek a realistic solution for your retirement.

K Goldsmith & Daughters Ltd – The Strongest of Strong Family Businesses

F

ive years ago, following her father Kenny’s spinal surgery, Lucy Goldsmith stepped in to ensure that Kenny’s painting business of over ten years stayed afloat. From just helping carry ladders at first, Lucy’s contribution was soon to include her commencing a Level 3 Advanced Craft apprenticeship in painting and decorating, which she completed in 2015. The prestigious CITB “Pride of Construction Daily Mirror Hero of Construction Award” came Lucy’s way in 2015, as she again worked tirelessly, following Kenny’s triple heart by-pass operation, which was again threatening the business.

At around this time, sister Emma became involved, taking over the administrative side of the business, and so K Goldsmith & Daughters was born. Dad needed time to recover fully and due to Emma and Lucy’s hard work and dedication, the business went from strength to strength. Lucy’s partner Jack came on board and began labouring, but was soon encouraged to complete a minimum twoyear apprenticeship, which was to lead to him being offered a full-time position.

In 2015, Kenny encouraged Emma to complete her NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration, and as her confidence grew, she was encouraged to network and become an active member of ‘Bourne in Business’. She is also currently vice chairperson of SLGTA (South Lincs Group Training Association).

Lucy and Emma actively support CITB (Construction Industry Training Board), promoting construction to the next generation and, in particular, getting women involved in construction.

More bad luck arrived in December 2016 with Kenny requiring major bowel surgery. Again, both girls stepped up and this time Jack came into his own, demonstrating his commitment to the family business and ensuring that customers wouldn’t be let down. Upon Kenny’s returning to work in April 2017, Emma, Lucy and Jack were rewarded.

K Goldsmith & Daughters Ltd was formed and all three became shareholders in this most familyoriented of businesses.

Summer 2017 will see granddaughter Ellie delivering leaflets, cleaning equipment and washing the vans. She foresees a possible career as an interior designer, so look out for those colourful vans in the future, as they advertise K Goldsmith, Daughters & Granddaughter Ltd!

Kodi - The Controversial and Powerful Media Player

K

odi is a superb media player that allows you to play or stream video, music and pictures. It is extremely customisable and allows the addition of ‘modules’ that provide additional content and services.

Why Have I Heard that Kodi is Illegal?

Kodi itself is just a piece of software and is 100% legal. It is powerful, well written and one of the best media players available. However, because the Kodi software is so customisable, there have been many illegal add-ons written, to ‘bolt-on’ to it. Some of these add-ons allow the illegal streaming and downloading of copyrighted material (things like the latest movies, TV shows, sport events etc.)

Taking this a stage further, those less concerned with the legality of the content, have built small desktop boxes that connect direct to your TV. These boxes have the Kodi software and the illegal bolt-ons pre-installed and allow easy play back of the latest TV, films and music, in contravention of copyright laws. These boxes are known as ‘Kodi boxes’ and it is these that are now banned. It is illegal to sell, buy and use these devices. This is a little unfortunate for Kodi as it mistakenly brands the Kodi software as being part of that illegal activity.

In its simplest form, Kodi is a media player and can identify the difference between video, audio and photo files.

It is a powerful and easy to use media centre for playing this type of media, whether watching video, listening to music or watching a slideshow of your holiday snaps.

However, when linked to the Internet, Kodi also allows easy ‘streaming’ of video and audio which is what makes it so powerful. For the uninitiated, play-back refers to playing a complete file that you have stored on your device, whereas ‘streaming’ sends a constant stream of data that is played back as it is received. So, using old technology, a broadcasted TV channel, such as BBC 1 is the equivalent of a stream, as you watched it ‘live’ as it was broadcast, whereas a VHS video recorded and stored a copy of the programme on the tape and you watched this via ‘play-back’.

ardens look lovely, blue sky in your photos will make your neighbours green with envy and the buyers like to move with enough time to get in for new school places later in the year. The added bonus of moving home when the weather is good is also an obvious benefit, when planning the big day.

So, what is going on with the housing market now that we have had all this drama with the General Election?

You’ll not be too surprised to hear that people still need to move home, regardless of what the politicians are up to. We’re all part of our democracy and whether we rent or own, we’re all part of the housing market too. So, let’s get involved; we can do both and we should do both. All the parties are aware that the housing market needs some “t.l.c.”, and all the parties are promising to help as much as they can. Whoever is in power and whatever they want to do, we’ll all still be wanting to upsize or

downsize. To quote The Who, “Meet the new boss, the same as the old boss.”

The Potting Shed All of that hard work earlier on in the year should be paying off now, as you should be reaping the fruits of your labour almost on a daily basis. July is generally a warm, dry month and you will need to make sure that you keep the crops watered frequently, as sporadic watering can cause a number of problems: flowers may fall, skins split, fruits may not form and plants may bolt. The best times to water are at the beginning or end of the day to minimise evaporation and make sure that you give the plants a good soaking to penetrate right down to the roots. Putting mulch around the plants can help conserve the moisture, slowing down evaporation rates and help keep the weeds at bay: as does regular hoeing.

Another problem at this time of the year is pests:

● Spray tomatoes and potatoes against blight and dig up any rogue potato plants from last year, as they may be harbouring disease.

● Space may be created by lifting onions, garlic and early potatoes; you can use this space to plant out Brussels sprouts, cabbages and cauliflower that you have grown from seed. ● Transplant leeks into their final growing position.

A few jobs for this month include; ● Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes.

● Feed tomatoes and peppers.

● Check for blackfly on broad beans, runner beans, beetroot, and apply a spray as soon as you see them.

● lettuce, rocket and a variety of salad leaves –succession sow for an ongoing supply in the autumn.

● Florence fennel.

● Cover cauliflower heads with the leaves to prevent them from going yellow.

● Inspect cabbage leaves for eggs or caterpillars and squash them or spray.

Although it is getting late for sowing and planting, there are still a few crops that can be planted:

● Fast growing varieties of peas, beetroot and carrots.

● Lift garlic, onions and shallots: loosen the soil around the roots then choose a dry spell to lift them, lay them on the ground to dry out in the sun: this should help prolong their storage life. ● Early potatoes should be coming out of the ground now and, although they do not store as well as the maincrop varieties, they will store until finished.

Bourne Town Football Club

B

ourne Town Football Club and its clubhouse can be found just off Abbey Road on the Abbey Lawn. With the continuing development of Bourne and its expanding population over recent years, some newcomers to Bourne could be excused for not knowing that the town even has a football club. The club was formed in 1883 and, to this day, still manages to run a first team and a reserve team. It also accommodates the Under 18s on a Sunday morning and a Bourne Ladies team.

Co-chairmen, Darren Munton and Steve Elger are really pleased with how the club has progressed over the past three years. This coincides with Bourne Town Juniors coming on board and giving the club and its committee a new impetus. Steve Elger said, “Bourne Town Football Club is very much a friendly club with a family feeling. Match days at the Abbey Lawns have a great atmosphere with supporters, family members and the juniors section all getting behind local lads who are playing in either the first team or the reserves. All home games are well supported and I am delighted that home gates have increased by over 50% over the last three years.”

Off the playing field, there is a dedicated committee who work tirelessly to ensure that United Counties League football is kept in the town. “They are a great set of people and Bourne Town Football Club is very fortunate to have every single one of them,” added Steve.

The football club would like to take this opportunity to thank its many sponsors who ensure the future of the club. JJ Mac Ltd has recently agreed to become the major sponsor of the club and it is hoped that this partnership will bring a great benefit to not just the football club but the community of Bourne as a whole. o one will have missed the terrible events across the country over the last three months in Westminster, Manchester and at London Bridge. The sheer brutality and indiscriminate killing and wounding of innocent people is difficult to comprehend.

Terrorism takes many forms and uses violence and threats of violence to publicise their causes and as a means to achieve their goals through influencing the government or intimidate the public. They can be well organised groups operating from remote locations to the so called ‘lone wolf’, who may be influenced or motivated by the ideology and beliefs of others.

• Anyone buying or storing a large amount of chemicals, fertilisers or gas cylinders for no obvious reasons.

Neighbourhood policing is an essential tool in countering terrorism. Police officers and PCSOs, working closely with the community, get to know and understand it, building trust which in turn helps to identify tensions or the presence of extremist activity.

This valuable information is passed on by neighbours, work colleagues, friends and even family members of those involved.

Terrorists live amongst us. By working together with the police, staying alert and thinking about your safety and security at home or work or when you are out and about, you can make it harder for terrorists to plan or carry out an attack.

You should report suspicious activity or behaviour – anything that seems out of place, unusual or just doesn’t seem to fit in with everyday life. These are just some

Discovering . . . the Woodland Sculpture Trail

A

rt in public places is at a disadvantage from the start because the vandals are forever at the gates waiting to deface or tear down any accessible structure that endeavours to educate and stimulate.

Despite this drawback, attempts to bring art to the people continue, notably in Bourne Wood where a muchheralded sculpture trail was launched in the summer of 1991 by the Forestry Commission in conjunction with local authorities and community groups, a project designed to attract visitors and enable resident artists execute and display their work in a woodland setting.

Seven artists were commissioned to produce work that would fit easily into the location, the most notable among them being by John Fortnum who created a representation of Robert de Brunne, better known as Robert Manning, the monk who lived and worked at Bourne Abbey during the 14th century.

The statue was approached by a gravelled path from the main track, at the beginning of which a giant footprint gave a first intimation of the sculpture’s presence and the path then wound through dark pines until reaching this gigantic piece, a vertical cone of pine logs soaring 30 feet and topped by a cast concrete head which gazed with remarkable presence across an open area near the lakes,

over the trees beyond towards Sempringham Abbey, the home of Robert’s order of Gilbertine monks where he had lived before moving to Bourne.

This timber tower with an internal ladder and viewing platform was believed to be the largest work completed by a British sculptor working alone. It was also the most controversial of all the exhibits, provoking considerable argument about its artistic merit, and one dark night it was even set on fire although it became a joke around town that the culprits were not vandals but exasperated art critics. In the years that followed, the sculpture deteriorated badly and eventually became so unsafe that it was dismantled in 2003.

Although the original sculpture trail is no more, the remains of some creations can still be seen by vigilant walkers, such as The Woodsman by Simon Todd, a figure carved from a tree trunk which lies in an open space near the main car park at the junction of several paths, an axe beside him, open hand beneath his chin, like an ancient spirit of the woods inviting us to explore the more secluded ways, a figure that has often been wrongly identified as our Saxon hero, Hereward the Wake.
