Fathers in Business

This month, to celebrate Father’s Day, (the one day of the year when we fathers can all “put away the Marigold gloves” for the day, and spend some uninterrupted “me-time” in our man cave, a.k.a. the shed), we’re focusing here on three local dads from the Bourne area.

All are successful in their particular line of business, but more to the point, all are adored by their various children, one of whom only arrived in April this year!

DANIEL TWAITE Known to many regular customers on Bourne’s Thursday and Saturday market as the likeable and chatty guy on the fruit and veg stall, Dan is still reeling from having become a first-time father, just a couple of months ago. On April 4th, his partner gave birth to Jennifer, and, according to Dan, “it was the best feeling I’ve experienced in my life.

Words can’t describe the happiness you feel, seeing her enter the world.”

Dan’s first job was at the age of fifteen, where he worked part-time on a fruit and vegetable stall on Saturdays, and on Thursdays in school holidays. He carried this on through his college years, then went full-time, before finally taking the business over in September 2011.

JAMES NORTH James became the fifth generation of the North family to own the prestigious North Street shoe shop, upon the retirement of his father, Roger North. There are regular features in this magazine, reporting on the outstanding successes of Norths Shoes, this remarkable “little sole” in the huge ocean of larger footwear retailers nationally. Recent expansion, under the ambitious management, has seen branches appear and prosper in both Stamford and Cambridge.

James and his wife Claire have two children, Jasmine, aged twelve, and ten-year old Freddie.

Typically, (some might say!), Claire looks after the day-to-day jobs, whilst James puts in the hard work, taking his children to their after-school activities.

It must be exhausting for poor old dad, having to watch them both play cricket on the Abbey Lawn, following in the footsteps of both grandad Roger, and their late, great grandad, the highly respected Jack North!

What was the most important piece of advice your father gave you?

Treat others how you want to be treated yourself...

What key advice do you feel you have given/will give to your children?

The same advice. Treat others how you want to be treated yourself. Always have a positive outlook on life.

Whilst growing up, what challenges did you pose for your father?

Apparently, I was strong willed and single-minded!

What are the biggest challenges you are facing/will face from your own little dears?

Jasmine has a personality similar to my own – strong-minded and fearless, whilst Freddie needs help facing the challenges of dyslexia.

His father is Derrick Twaite, who has lived around the Bourne area all his life, working as a farmer and still enjoying it at sixty-four years old. He has four children and little Jennifer becomes grandchild number six.

What was the most important piece of advice your father gave you?

My dad gave me several words of advice, some more useful than others! He always encouraged me from the age of fifteen about earning my own money. If I wanted something, then he would make sure I worked for it so that I appreciated it even

I would just like them to follow their own dreams and aspirations.

more. That has driven me to this day, so I work hard so that my family has everything they could desire.

What key advice do you feel you will give to your children?

My advice to Jennifer will be similar to mine. I’ll encourage her to follow her dreams.

Nothing is impossible, but respect every aspect of your life and live it to the full from day one.

What are the biggest challenges you will face from your own little dears?

Challenges I may have in the future with Jennifer could be about the paths she’s taking in her life, for example college/ university to first jobs. As a parent, I’ll be here to try and guide her through everything and support her in every decision she makes.

Is it likely that your children are going to “follow in dad’s footsteps”?

I’d always love my daughter to follow in my footsteps and carry on my business to keep it going as a family-run concern, but that will be her choice when the time comes.

At just two months old, my partner and I are just loving every minute watching her change/grow up.

PHILIP HAKIM Philip runs the Wellhead Practice in Bourne’s Abbey Road, an independent healthcare facility, offering osteopathy and a variety of mainstream complementary options, such as chiropody, acupuncture, hypnotherapy and sports massage. His monthly contribution to the “Discovering Bourne” magazine not only educates, but serves to inspire and entertain us all.

Philip’s father, Jeremy, is a semiretired chartered accountant, living with his wife in Surrey. He ran his own firm and enjoyed many years sailing, but now spends less time on the water and more time tending his bees.

Philip has three daughters, aged ten, nine and nine. According to dad, “they have big personalities that are very different in so many ways which always surprises me given the small age gap and identical upbringing. They are generally well-behaved, but there is never a quiet moment in our family home.”

What was the most important piece of advice your father gave you?

I can’t think of one piece of specific advice that my father has given me but dad is the wise old owl of the family. I know my sister and I have valued his

advice throughout our lives and will continue to do so.

What key advice do you feel you have given/will give to your children?

Do your best with tenacity and perseverance - if something is worth doing, it›s worth doing properly. Try to be humble.

Whilst growing up, what challenges did you pose for your father?

I had an abundance of energy and needed to be kept busy or I would become mischievous, and often did. My school record in the earlier years was quite colourful!

What are the biggest challenges you are facing/will face from your own little dears?

Trying to ensure they live as children for as long as possible and don’t grow up too fast - enjoying each stage of life.

Social media is a bit of a worry.

Kids seem to be totally obsessed with it, and it would be nice to think that somehow there was a way of moderating this to keep them grounded with a sense of perspective towards reality.

Is it likely that your children are going to “follow in dad’s footsteps”?

I’m not sure. They are all still very young, with three very different sets of interests and hobbies.

Time will tell.

Eat the Season

Pork Chops with Gooseberry Sauce Glorious gooseberries are at their best in June and their fragrant acidic taste enhances the flavour of the pork.

Remove the tops and tails 2 Pork Chops from the gooseberries.

For the Sau ce: Place all the ingredients for the sauce in a pan.

400g goo seberri es Cook slowly on a gentle heat 1 tbs p wat er until the skins of the gooseberries start to burst.

1tsp soy sau ce Meanwhile, heat a 1 tbs p caster sug ar tablespoon of oil in a large heavy-bottomed pan. Place the pan over medium-high heat and let the oil get nice and hot.

Season the pork chops with salt and pepper.

Cook them on the both sides for 3-4 minutes.

When the chops are cooked place them on a plate.

Smother the chops with the gooseberry sauce and serve immediately.

In the Hot Seat

IN THE HOT SEAT Among the musicians taking to the stage at Bourne’s Wellhead Park for the Bourne Festival, early in June, is Mark Delaine Smith, and here he shares some of his opinions with our readers.

Mark, along with his brothers Ian, Anthony and Kevin, and his nieces Jennifer and Victoria, works at the town’s family-run bus company, Delaine Buses Ltd. Mark plays bass guitar and performs backing vocals for “Festival Saturday” night’s main act, “Revolver”. He has played bass guitar since his school days, and also plays bass guitar for “Cuttin’ Loose” and “Loose Rocket”. Mark lives with partner Claire and their two daughters, Eloise and Lucille.

Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood?

Stamford, Lincolnshire. I have many fond memories of childhood and could give a different answer every day. Endless summer days, building dens and dams in the old orchard, now built over by Beech Avenue, would be one feature.

How would you describe yourself in only five words?

Caffeinated, Intense, Reliable, Energetic, Dependable.

If there was one thing which you could change about Bourne, what would it be and why?

I like the town the way it is, although it’d be nice if it was about a mile up the Pacific coast from Malibu though!

Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why?

Family and friends. I find that you constantly learn from those around you, and all the characters and personalities who you meet add something different, in their own way.

Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why?

Rik Mayall and David Bowie. Where would we be without comedy and music? Both made

What advice would you give to a “sixteen-yearold you”?

Surround yourself with positive people early on in life. You’ll drive each other on and always have smiles on your faces. You can achieve most things if you’re realistic with your goals … and keep working at it.

“If you go down to The Well today …”

Yes, indeed, you are sure of a big surprise, especially if you have been frequenting this popular village inn as long as some of us have! The Wishing Well in Dyke, just north of Bourne, was in serious jeopardy of closing a few years ago, until new owners came to the rescue, and “The Well” survived. Six months ago, a new couple, Scott and Caroline Young, moved from Yorkshire, as the new landlord and landlady – and that is when the surprises began.

Out went the dated and jaded furniture, some of which seemed to have been there from the “David Owen” days of the 1970s! In its place appeared a new seating arrangement in the lounge, with more opulent furnishings and carpeting throughout, whilst the bar assumed a completely new look.

The general consensus contains the words, “At last”!

Having cut their teeth at the prestigious Simonstone Hall, an eighteen-bedroom country hotel just out of Hawes in Wensleydale, Scott and Caroline took on their first pub, (which became their first “refurb”!) The Lord Nelson at Winthorpe needed reviving and that is just what it got, as did their next venture, The George at Wath, near Ripon. Their being awarded an AA rosette was testament to the Young’s skill, ambition and attention to every detail, so crucial in the pub and restaurant world.

And so, south to Dyke and the challenge posed on many fronts. A new menu immediately appeared (to general acclaim), the word started to spread, the extraordinary Sunday carvery was safe, but much more was to follow … and that is the point we’ve now reached.

The second new menu is now here, whilst the “Specials” board will continue to be updated regularly. Scott, as executive head chef, leads the kitchen brigade, whilst Caroline ensures that everything, “front of house” runs smoothly. They are both proud of their hard-working staff, whose contribution means so much.

Hosting their first wedding reception at “The Well” recently was helped by the Youngs’ vast experience in the past,

(which includes something about a certain Kate Winslet, but that’s a story for another day!) They see this wedding reception provision as something to nurture, whilst continuing to offer eight bedrooms, all recently refurbished (of course!)

It is most encouraging to some to hear that Scott is passionate about his beer, and he offers a range of cask beers and guest ales, whilst the play area and garden are still popular. Some things maybe don’t need to change as much as others!

Firstly, a big thank you to all those who attended our second Quiz Night at the end of April, which raised over £360 towards my chosen charities, and especially to all those who helped on the night and Subway for contributing towards the buffet. Congratulations to Terry and Maureen Butler and family who were the worthy winners on the night.

We had one last formal event in the company of the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire, at a Spring Reception in aid of the ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.

And so our year comes to a close and a massive thank you to all of the following:

We finished our term in office with a last fundraising event, an Afternoon Tea Party at the Darby and Joan Hall. A huge thank you to everyone who helped on the day, baked, attended and supported us at this event.

The Hereward Group Medical Practice As a town expands at the rate at which Bourne has in recent years, there is an accompanying demand for services such as schools, shops and doctors’ surgeries. The population of Bourne and its immediate vicinity is now well over 20,000, and we have two surgeries within the town, both with bulging lists of patients. Inevitably, therefore, there will be increased pressure on everything, from waiting to have your call answered to waiting for an appointment to be seen. Then comes the issue of whether or not there are enough staff to deal with the patient, once an initial assessment has been made.

Finding solutions to cope with this pressure has led to one of the surgeries, The Hereward Group Practice in Exeter Street, Bourne, introducing some significant changes.

The influential “Patient Participation Group”, (P.P.G.), under its Chairman, Barry Sadler, highlighted the criticisms that the Practice was receiving over unacceptably long waiting times for phone calls to be answered. A new, fully monitored, system has now been adopted, which has transformed this aspect of the process, with a response time of less than twenty seconds now the norm.

The P.P.G. (a body of up to fifteen people, all patients who meet regularly, in an advisory capacity, to help bridge the gap between doctor and patient) then considered the contentious issue of waiting times to see a medical practitioner. The outcome has been a new appointment system, alongside the introduction of the “Primary Care Practitioner” team”, (P.C.P.) The number of Health Care Assistants has been doubled, to four, making it easier to book a blood test or an E.C.G. or have dressings applied and changed. This has had a significant impact, with the waiting time for blood tests and E.C.G.s now down to one day.

The Primary Care Practitioner Team comprises two young paramedics, Steven and Daniel, along with an experienced and recently “upskilled” nurse, Nicole, and whose role will be to work alongside the duty doctor every day. The P.C.P. are very experienced clinicians, specifically trained to assess a patient’s condition and offer appropriate advice and treatment. They will also be able to visit patients, and can be seen “on the day”, at a morning and an afternoon clinic. The duty doctor will still be available if the patient requests it, but the whole thrust of this initiative is to provide extra, much needed, capacity, and reduce waiting times and so avoid the massive backlog of appointments which can blight any medical practice.

The Practice Team now has a new Senior Partner, in Dr. Ian Wheatley, who joined the Practice in 1996 and who, besides offering full general medical services, also represents the patients on the South Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Governing Body. He takes over, as the Senior Partner, from Dr. Rachel Elder who retired on March 31st 2017, after twenty-four years with the Hereward Practice.

The Hereward practice also offer pre-bookable appointments on a Saturday morning and a Monday evening.

Accepting the restrictions placed upon the Practice constrained by its relatively small location, there are nonetheless refurbishments under way, with more treatment rooms being brought into play, and intelligent use made of every available workspace.

A new management team at the Practice has been in place since last summer. The first opportunity to show how things were being turned around came in October 2016. Following the inspection by the Care Quality Commission, (C.Q.C.), nine months earlier, which concluded that the Practice “requires improvement”, it was as a result of much dedication and hard work from everyone concerned that the inspection team were able to now award a “good” rating in every category. The journey towards “outstanding” has begun, and the forward-thinking, patient-focused initiatives now in operation should provide the Practice with confidence that this particular accolade could be within reach.

Acupuncture Needles - No Pain: Plenty to Gain!

raditional acupuncture forms a part of traditional Chinese medicine, where the basis of diagnosis and treatment is that the mind and body should be in perfect balance. This ancient system of healing has developed over 2,500 years, having originated in China and other Far Eastern cultures. It is a gentle and effective treatment that focuses on helping the whole person, aiming to improve their entire health and wellbeing. Today, it is widely used and accepted all over the world and 25% of the world’s population have acupuncture on a regular basis.

One of the most popular myths surrounding acupuncture is the size of the needles used in the treatment. In fact, research shows that 21% of the British public think an acupuncturist’s needle is as large as that used in an injection. The reality, though, is that acupuncture needles are actually the same width as a human hair, and some are just 0.13mm in length.

Most people might feel a slight tingling sensation when the needles are used, but this certainly does not feel like the pain associated with an injection.

Acupuncture is also considered suitable for people of all ages, including babies, children and the elderly. It can be very effective and is often integrated with conventional medicine.

The treatment is widely considered to be beneficial for a range of symptoms resulting from illness, from clearly defined complaints, or to improve general feelings of wellbeing and help with relaxation.

Gut-focused Hypnotherapy Helps Treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome “I have to plan everything, just in case” Bloating, constipation, cramps and diarrhoea are some of the physical symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). However, IBS has far wider-reaching consequences for most sufferers. It can cause extensive anxiety, worry and embarrassment that can negatively affect all aspects of a person’s life, from their relationships and work to their social activities. IBS sufferers usually feel trapped and have to plan their lives meticulously around the nearest toilet or exit. Simple pastimes, like walking, long trips in the car, cinema or theatre visits, travelling on a plane and camping, are just a few situations that would be unbearable.

“I’m so embarrassed” As a complex, functional gastric disorder, the causes of IBS are still unclear, but involve a combination of hypersensitivity in the gut, as well as irregular mobility in how the gut functions. Other aspects may include variations in gut bacteria and diet. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a relatively common condition in the UK, affecting approximately 20% of the population. Symptoms can develop at any age, but are often first noticed between the ages of twenty and thirty, with women twice as likely to experience it as men.

The impact of stress on IBS The chemical nature of stress, worry or anxiety makes the symptoms of IBS even worse, and this in turn often increases the negative emotional states associated with the condition, creating an unhelpful cycle of emotional upset and physical discomfort.

“It takes me hours to leave the house” Hypnotherapy can help break this cycle. It can help reduce anxiety and stress levels, which can lead to improvements in the frequency

and intensity of symptoms (including pain), but it can also help sufferers to develop strategies to effectively deal with stress and anxiety for longer-term improvements. In addition to this, it can help individuals to take control of their lives and to build confidence and self-esteem, which can also be affected when experiencing health issues. In combination, these benefits help individuals to reconnect with their lives, so that they can be free to enjoy activities, be spontaneous and spend time with friends, family and work colleagues.

Having spent almost twenty years working from behind a desk, Amanda realised that there must be much more to life, so she’s taken a whole batch of qualifications and is now a fully qualified Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer (REPS registered and insured).

Amanda’s Aim: “To project my enthusiasm about keeping fit and healthy to as many people as I can. To show that keeping fit and healthy is fun and enjoyable”.

Classes: Monday: Elsea Park Community Centre, 9:30am - 10:30am - “Not Just Aerobics”.

Simple routines, easy to learn, fun to do, whatever your age or ability, followed by muscle strength and endurance exercise. You will re-awaken those tummy muscles, tighten the bottom and tone the legs. You won’t need leggings nor leotards for these classes.

Using H.I.I.T. (high intensity interval training) principles of short bursts of exercise followed by short rests, this class gives a TOTAL body work out, cardio, toning and strengthening. A “lowimpact” version of H.I.I.T, this class suits all fitness levels and ages.

Golf Tip Frustrated with leaving your putts or even chip shots short of the hole? with Darren Game Do you fall into the “Telegraph Pole Syndrome”!

Here are a few questions to ask yourself and then help change the way you approach those longer putts and chips shots.

• Do you use a GPS system, laser or yardage book when you play golf?

• Is club selection based on the distance you are given?

• Are you confident about executing the golf shot, having picked the right club for the distance?

Now let’s go to the putting green.

• Do you get a distance for the length of shot you are about to play?

• Do you stand behind the ball looking towards the hole to do ‘all the planning’?

On the green, we tend to stand behind the ball spending more time possibly, attempting to work out slopes and where we need to aim the stroke, rather than actually getting a distance measurement like we do elsewhere.

This is the Telegraph Pole Syndrome: What happens when you look along a line of telegraph poles or fence posts? It is nothing new, but it is important to remember. Although, the poles are the same distance apart, they appear to get closer together the further along the line you look. It is nothing more than perspective, horizons and the vanishing point.

How does this affect golf?

Sadly, when you stand behind the ball looking towards the hole, this telegraph pole scenario has the effect of making the hole look closer than it actually is.

So, because you have not actually measured the distance of the shot, the mind processes this visual data to determine how hard to hit the ball.

Consequently, the ball is inclined to finish short of the hole as your mind has programmed the golf stroke to hit the ball to the perceived distance relative to the telegraph pole syndrome and not the correct distance.

To improve your distance control, start the shot with the same routine as you do on the tee or fairway. Ask yourself how far you want the golf ball to travel. In other words actually get a measurement for the length of the shot. One of your normal paces will be roughly two and half feet. So pace it out, remembering you cannot actually touch the green on the line of the shot.

If you do the same when you are practising and you will soon be able to ‘marry’ stroke and distance together and be able to programme yourself to hit the golf ball to the hole side instead of leaving it frustratingly short all the time.

’m sure that if you are a regular watcher of Gardener’s World you will have seen the feature on “no dig” gardening. I was intrigued: what’s not to like? – Less weeds, healthier soil and no back-breaking digging! So I have been having a browse on www.charlesdowding.co.uk. It doesn’t seem right not to dig, but I’m not getting any younger and if it makes things easier and saves time, then surely it’s the way to go.

While it is highly unlikely that there will be a frost, the bugs and beasties will be enjoying munching on your plants, so be vigilant and keep them down to manageable levels. If you haven’t adopted “no dig”, then you will have the perennial problem of weeds. They need to be kept at bay as they will take nutrients and water from your crops or shade them from the sunlight. So

When transplanting out young plants, place something around the base of the plant to create a collar e.g. a piece of carpet, cardboard or fleece.

Other jobs to do this month include: ● Plant out vegetables that you have grown from seed, but make sure you harden them off before planting out in their final position. ● Thin out seedlings and plant others in their final growing positions. ● Earth up potatoes and, towards the end of the month, harvest earlies.

● Hoe regularly and particularly when the soil is dry, as the severed and exposed roots will die quickly. If you hoe when the soil is damp, remove remains so that they won’t re-grow.

● Cut down broad beans and peas just above the surface and use for compost, but leave the roots in the ground as a good source of nitrogen.

● Spread mulches such as garden compost, well-rotted manure or bark chips, to suppress weeds, or use lightproof membrane to kill more established weeds.

● Crops to plant out include; summer squashes, courgettes, leeks, runner beans, sprouting broccoli and sweetcorn.

●Make sure that you don’t let weeds flower; you will only get new crops of weeds from their seeds.

Pests are also becoming more noticeable in the warmer weather, so don’t forget to net brassicas to protect them from the pigeons, and it is a good idea to protect carrots from carrot fly by covering with a fine mesh. Cabbage root fly, which attacks the roots of brassicas, is caused by female flies laying their

SING FOR LIFE 2017: FORTY WOMEN WANTED! Following its phenomenal success last year, the charity project is back for 2017, looking for forty local women to perform in a concert supporting Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall Hospice.

Now in its fifth season, Sing for Life has introduced hundreds of local women to the joys of singing while raising thousands of pounds for charity, both for Cancer Research UK and for Thorpe Hall, with over £5,000 raised for the hospice last year alone.

Plus of course there’s the charitable aspect of the project, and the opportunity to give something back to the community. With £7,500 needed every day just to keep the hospice running, fundraising is always a priority.

Equity release - Is it right for you?

quity release is a way of raising money against the value of your home. If you are aged fifty-five or over, own your own home and need additional funds, then it may be an option for you to consider.

Many retired people managing on small pensions and limited savings may live in properties of significant value. Any money received through equity release schemes is normally tax-free, and you are able to use it in any way you wish, whether it be to support your lifestyle in retirement, buy a boat or even use it as part of your inheritance taxplanning.

There are two main types of equity release. One is where a company will lend you money against the value of your home – this is a lifetime mortgage on which, in general, you do not physically have to pay the interest, but it “rolls up” through the term of the loan. The other type is where you actually sell all, or part of, your property to a company and this is called “home reversion”.

All equity release companies who are members of Safe Homes Income Plans (SHIP) guarantee that, regardless of house prices, you will be able to continue living in your

IF there’s one thing that makes most of us tut with disdain it must be watching someone deliberately drop litter or throw rubbish from a car.

The independent environmental charity, “Keep Britain Tidy”, estimates that more than thirty million tons of litter are collected from streets in England every year - that’s enough to fill four Wembley stadiums!

The charity has found that, whilst 62% of people dropped litter, just 28% admitted having done so.

Almost six in ten people said they considered litter to be a problem, and local authorities spend an estimated £1 billion a year clearing up the mess.

However, new plans to clean up on litter louts are currently under discussion which will see fines for people caught dropping rubbish in public places doubled to £150.

At the moment, fines for littering are set locally by councils and range from £50 to £80, with a default level of £75, if the council does not specifically set its own amount.

In addition, drivers could also be fined automatically if litter is thrown from their vehicle, even if a passenger is to blame, according to reports.

The Government wants litter thrown from cars to be treated in the same way as speeding, with the registered keeper held responsible, unless someone else comes forward to admit the offence.

Fines for littering from a vehicle could also be increased from £75 to £125 in England under a new strategy being drawn up by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

It would then be down to the driver to either admit to the offence and pay the prescribed fine, challenge it in court, or nominate the passenger who was actually at fault.

Funding those Care Home Fees - Words of Warning

W

ith care home fees now costing several thousand pounds a year, there comes a point when you or your family will have to make the tough decision to sell your home to fund those care home fees.

People’s fear of care home fees is real, and many people are turning to unregulated companies who promise to protect your assets for you, if you go into care.

Many people are not aware that, by using these unregulated companies, there is little or no recourse when things go wrong.

When the local authority carry out financial assessments, and they become aware of the assets being given away, they will look at a whole range of evidence, including the marketing material used to entice you into putting your property into these trusts.

If the local authority can show that there has been a deliberate deprivation of your assets into a trust, or by another means, to prevent you paying care home fees, then you will be assessed under the means test rules, as though you still own those assets.

This is a very emotive topic, and has recently been featured on the BBC Radio 2, “Money Box” programme.

Take your phone for a walk in the country

I

f you’d like to try a very positive and enjoyable use of modern IT and benefit from a healthy walk in the countryside, then download the app for your smartphone and try out Geocaching.

What is Geocaching?

Think of it as a type of treasure hunt.

All over the world geocachers, like my wife and I, have placed small containers hidden in various locations for people to find. Mostly you will pass these by and have no idea they are there, but with the use of a smartphone and the satellite Global Positioning System (GPS) you can hunt out these ‘treasure’ boxes.

How does it work?

All you need is your mobile smartphone, a geocaching app and a free account at Geocaching.com.

Once you have those you can open the app (or go to the webpage)

and search any location for hidden geocaches.

The illustration here shows the result for searching for Bourne. If you are unfamiliar with geocaching then you may well be surprised at how many are out there and it is the same around the globe.

If you search on a web browser you can click each geocache and get its reference, latitude and longitude but today’s smartphone apps make life even easier.

Carry out the search on your phone app, select the geocache that you want to hunt down and click navigate to the geocache. The screen will now change on your phone and it will use GPS to lead you to within a couple of metres of the geocache location. After that it is up to you to find it, usually in the vegetation.

What do you do when you’ve found it?

The geocache could be anything from a small magnetic box on the back of a sign, to a large Tupperware container, from a fake branch to a dummy snail shell.

Regardless of size, inside you will find a sheet of paper that you can sign to log your visit.

Logging your finds.

As well as signing the small sheet at the cache you can also log your find on the app, or on the geocaching website. This way you can track which caches you have visited, locally or overseas.

What are trackables?

Occasionally, when searching out caches you will find a trackable item in the box. These trackable items are tokens that carry a unique identifier. Your task with these is to remove the trackable from the cache, log that you have it on the website (using the unique id) and move it to another cache.

As the trackable has a unique identifier you can look up its ‘journey’ and see how many miles it has travelled around the world.

You can download the geocaching app from your App Store on your smart phone and there is a stack of information available on the geocaching website at www. geocaching.com

History

Discovering . . . The everlasting meat

T

he meat that never spoils has been a myth in the retail butchery trade for several centuries, the most famous instance of the everlasting joint being a large rump roast that was hung in the fish and meat room of the Castle Market at Sheffield in 1836 where it remained for 140 years before being transferred to a glass case in 1976.

The story of the everlasting meat was popular in the neighbourhood where the butchery became known as the Leg of Mutton Shop. Children would frequently call in to have a look and customers were regaled with tales of its history while they waited to be served although by 1906 it had shrivelled up so much that one newspaper reported that it resembled a shillelagh.

Bourne’s claim does not have such longevity but the tale is no less curious. The meat was a leg of mutton which was hung by Charles Featherstone in his butcher’s shop at No 1 Abbey Road sometime around 1856. George Gelsthorpe, a retired butcher, worked in the shop as a lad and over seventy years later, when 84 years old, he recalled the incident:

The meat was eventually preserved in a glass fronted case which hung on the wall and remained in the shop when it was taken over by Aughton Brothers of Stamford and then in 1922 by William Elwes of W M Elwes and Sons, butchers. He moved out in 1938 and left the joint behind and as the premises remained unoccupied during the Second World War of 1939-45 they were requisitioned by the army. The Lincolnshire Regiment were encamped in Bourne for a time and soldiers who slept there have been blamed for destroying the everlasting meat because it has never been seen since.

“This leg of mutton started off by hanging in the shop for sale and it was bought by a customer on the Monday and he said he would call back for it but he never returned and it remained on the hook in case he did.

But instead of it going rotten, the meat mummified.”

The customer is believed to have been in Bourne on a shopping trip but by evening, he had drunk so much that he forgot about his purchase.

No 1 Abbey Road is still in use today but there is not a joint of meat in sight because the butchery business has gone and the premises are now devoted to business and commercial use.

Talented teenager to appear on TV Do you like talent shows and kids? If so, you’re not going to want to miss local singer Tabi appearing in the new ITV series, ‘The Voice Kids’, which will air in June and July, and features celebrity coaches Will i am, Pixie Lott and Danny Jones from McFly. “My grandma (Jennifer Stanton) found out about the show on social media and messaged me, so I applied, I auditioned and, well … the rest you’ll just have to wait and see!” commented Tabi.

Tabi, who has recently moved to Rippingale, has been singing since she could speak, according to mum Charlotte.

She was born in Kentucky and lived there until 2015, where she attended SCAPA (School for the Creative and Performing Arts), singing five days a week and playing the saxophone three days a week. “Leaving the USA was very bitter-sweet, as I was used to doing so much music and all my friends were like-minded, creative types”, Tabi says, “but I was looking forward to spending more time with my family

and reconnecting with old friends, so I knew it was going to be OK”.

Since relocating to the UK, Tabi has thrown herself into the South Lincolnshire music scene. She has performed at local events, including the Bourne Christmas Festival and the Stamford Christmas Lights Switch-On, as well as the Bourne Classic Car Festival. She is also a regular at open mic nights at The Hare and Hounds in Haconby, and The Cellar Bar at Stamford Arts Centre. For the past two years, Tabi has competed in the Grantham Music Festival and this year walked away with four trophies. In addition to all of this, Tabi also finds time to be a member of the Stamford Youth Theatre and can be seen this summer performing in their production of ‘Spamalot’, as ‘The Lady of the Lake’.

Tabi (a.k.a. Tabitha Gervis) is in Year 10 at Bourne Academy.

She would like to make a career in the music industry and is studying BTEC Music at school and also voice and saxophone outside of school.

So, if you want to see how our local talent gets on, you’re just going to have to tune in! In the meantime, however, why not come along to the Classic Car and Bike Carnival on the Wellhead Field on Father’s Day, Sunday June 18th, and see Tabi in action?

The wolf that lives with us

ambing time is now coming to an end .It is lovely to see them in the fields around us. It’s always an uplifting sight and part of the joy of spring.

Unfortunately, there has also been an increase in the number of dog attacks on sheep in recent years .This has terrible consequences for both the sheep and, possibly, the dogs and owners.

I had first-hand experience of this several years ago. I was called out by the RSPCA to a long, thin field, along the edge of the River Glen near Spalding. When I entered the field, I could see a group of sheep huddled together right

at one end. As I began to walk along the field, I could see bodies of sheep littered around the field .There were also many bodies floating in the river where sheep had jumped in to escape, but had drowned due to their heavy fleeces.

The injuries were severe. Some of these poor creatures were still alive and had to be put to sleep. One I particularly remember was a lamb with half its face missing. As I came to the far end of the field, I found two dogs laying, resting on the ground .They were pleased to see me and happily allowed me to attach them to a lead .As far as they were concerned, they had had a great time.

It is not the dog’s fault when these situations occur. We must always remember that there is a bit of wolf in all our dogs. It should come as no surprise that most of our much-loved and friendly pets would chase sheep and even attack them, if given the chance. It goes without saying that dogs must be kept under control near sheep .However, many of these attacks are carried out by dogs that have escaped from their gardens, while their owners are out. It is very important that your dogs must be kept in a secure environment.

Farmers are allowed to shoot dogs who are worrying sheep. Also, if a dog is seen attacking sheep, the owner will be eligible for a fine of up to £2,000, and the dog will be taken away and put to sleep.

THIS IS NOT THE DOG’S FAULT. The dog is only following an instinct. Many people do not believe that their dogs are capable of such a thing, but many of them are. It is up to us, as owners, to take care and protect our pets from these situations. It does not just apply to sheep.

Over the years, I have seen distraught owners when their much-loved dog has attacked chickens or pet rabbits or killed a muntjac deer, while running in the woods. We have also heard of those horrible cases where babies are attacked. All these things are our responsibility and we must understand “the wolf that lives with us”.

Bourne Elsea Park Church of England Primary Academy (Almost three years old and welcoming visits from the Bishop of Lincoln!)

We are now coming towards the end of our third year as Bourne Elsea Park Church of England Primary Academy, and what an exciting journey we have been on! Since we opened in September 2014 with our Reception and Year 2 classes, we have grown rapidly in size, and now have a class in each year group from Reception up to Year 5. New children have joined us at different stages of the school year and have quickly become part of the ‘Bourne Elsea Park Family’.

Working alongside Bourne Abbey Church of England Primary Academy, within the Abbey Academies Trust, the school has gone from strength to strength. The school prides itself on its motto: “Striving for excellence whilst caring for all within a loving and caring Christian environment”. We provide a stimulating learning environment with an exciting curriculum that generates a real thirst for learning.

This has never been more evident than in our recent whole school writing task. The children arrived at school in the morning and knew that this particular day was a little bit different! Walking through the school gates, they soon spotted some suspicious (and large!) looking footprints. Instantly, the children let their imaginations run wild! Upon entering school, a nest of large eggs was discovered in the hall and a dinosaur was spotted through the classroom window on the school playground. The children were completely enthused and engaged by this extraordinary happening, and wrote some incredible newspaper reports on the events of the day. The children have loved sharing the display of this work with visitors to the school.

As a Church of England Academy, we have created an environment where everyone can flourish, as children of God. Core Christian values permeate all aspects of school life, and the children live out these values in all that they do. Each term has a different Christian Value as a focus, and the children take great pride in demonstrating how they are able to live this value out.

Father Peter and Father Chris are regular visitors in school and the children really look forward to them leading Collective Worship for us. ‘Open the Book’ is a drama group formed from the different churches of Bourne, and they have become a regular feature this year. They visit every other week, and bring a bible story to life through drama, actions and songs. On Friday 5th May, we were very honoured to have Bishop Christopher of Lincoln visit us to see the ‘Open the Book’ team in action. It was a real privilege to have him in school and we thank him for the time that he gave to our children.

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Custody - What’s all that about then?

A

s I write this, I am sat in custody. No, I haven’t been arrested! I now have a new role as a custody sergeant, covering when required.

Currently it is 3am on a midweek night and there are three prisoners in the cells fast asleep. Two are here for conspiracy to supply drugs and the third for assault.

Before I completed my training in March, I have to say I didn’t want this role. The thought of being enclosed in the custody suite for a full shift didn’t fill me with excitement. Coupled with that is the huge responsibility of looking after the prisoners, dealing with the investigators, solicitors, interpreters, medics and the myriad of other visitors to custody, all the while complying with the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) which governs how we deal with prisoners. I was filled with dread and trepidation.

I completed the course and have now spent several shifts in custody and can say that my mindset has changed. Whilst there is much to think about and consider, everything we do is either written in policy or within PACE itself. This makes it quite

straightforward in deciding on our actions in most situations. It has also shown me how central the role of custody is in policing and making decisions which affect many people, including the suspect and victim.

The decision on what happens once the prisoner has been dealt with is down to the custody sergeant who assesses all the available evidence. The prisoner is then released with a sanction, (for example charged, cautioned or a penalty notice) or released with no further action. If there is a possibility of gathering further evidence, the prisoner can be ‘released under investigation’ or, in certain cases, on bail.

The custody sergeant runs the suite and is ultimately responsible for anything that happens. Everything that takes place is recorded, from the prisoner arriving and given a cup of tea, to being charged and released.

This is all recorded and retained on either the custody record for each prisoner or on the extensive CCTV system, which also records sound, in every suite.

This means that if something does go wrong, or there is a complaint, the written, visual and audio records can be retrieved easily so a full investigation can take place.

Too Many Potholes

I

reported a couple of years ago about a pothole crisis in Grantham, due to the council under-funding maintenance and repairs of potholes. The issue is now escalating into a national problem, despite a £6 billion commitment from the DfT to English councils. Even a boost of £50 million a year is proving not to be effective in maintaining a road network that is deteriorating faster than it can be repaired.

The RAC have reported a 24% rise in pothole-related breakdowns, compared to figures in 2015. The consequences are not trivial. Damage to wheels and suspension is common but, of greater concern, is the potential for injuries to motorcyclists and cyclists. This has serious implications for road safety.

Navigating around potholes when travelling at less than 30 mph in town roads can be tricky enough when you also

factor in all the additional hazards that come with town driving. But on the fastermoving roads like our A15, A16, A17 and A52, attempting to dodge potholes at say 50mph, while oncoming traffic is approaching you at similar speeds, really is a danger.

There are reports from the AA that concerned motorists are taking it upon themselves to create a network of volunteers who are attempting to deal with this problem by independently making repairs, rather than wait for the local authority.
