Staggering to think that this month, the national treasure that is Dame Vera Lynn will celebrate her birthday on March 20th by becoming the first singer in history to have released a new album at the age of one hundred – surely a case of “We’ll meet again …and again … and yet again”! Keep on rocking, girl!

IN THE HOT SEAT This “Mother’s Day Special” focuses on Claire Saberton, our very own “Team Mum”, Discovering Magazines Publisher and mother of two teenagers, Will, (18) and Ed, (15). Now in her fourth year at the helm, Claire loves the day-to-day contact with her clients and team members. Her selfless devotion to voluntary work deserves acknowledgement too. As a key player in the Bourne Events Team, Claire’s fund-raising and infectious enthusiasm have meant that the annual Classic Car and Bike Carnival and the Christmas Lights Switch-On are now firmly established on Bourne’s calendar.

A memorable highlight of her education at the Robert Manning School, (now the Bourne Academy), was surely her role as Nancy in “Oliver”, and this love for the Performing Arts has been passed down to sons, Will and Ed. Both are to play key roles in the forthcoming “Rock of Ages” musical, treading those same old boards, while proud mum looks on, alongside husband Chris.

Where were you born, and what is your earliest memory of your childhood?

I was born in Rugby Cottage Hospital, near to the family home in Lutterworth, Leicestershire, and my fondest memories are of swimming on Sundays in Lutterworth and some brilliant family holidays in North Wales.

Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why?

My dad, Bill, who provided the perfect role model for me – never give up, no matter how many setbacks you may face.

His lifetime in sales also gave me the idea and desire to use my powers of persuasion to forge my own career in sales and management.

My husband, Chris, continues to amaze, as he navigates us through the maddening world of two teenage boys and a wife, who at times, can prove a considerable challenge. His unerring support fills me with so much confidence.

Which two characters, (alive or not), would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why?

How would you describe yourself in just five words?

Driven, Fair, Honest, Loving, Perfectionist. (See how they had to be in alphabetical order?)

If there was one thing which you could change about Bourne, what would it be and why?

My recently becoming a Trustee of the Town Hall and its proposed conversion into an Arts Centre, fills me with so much hope and excitement for the future. Bourne is crying out for a focal point, and the youngsters, in particular, deserve somewhere within which their talents can be showcased, for years to come.

What advice would you give to a 16 year old you?

Try your hardest to be a character who is strong enough not to be lead astray by others. Stand up to the pressures and resist temptation!

Spotlight on clubs

Bourne and District Flower Club - (Creative, Artistic and Seeking New Members)

A

ffiliated to N.A.F.A.S. (The National Association of Flower Arrangement Society), Bourne Flower Club was established over thirty years ago, and presently with a membership of around sixty people, continues to thrive and offer a wide range of activities throughout the year.

At its inaugural gathering in 1984, Rosie Hollingworth, Janet Turner and the late Angela Bellamy were able to provide the seeds of enthusiasm, from which the Club was soon to develop, at its original location in Bourne Baptist Church. A more suitable location at the Darby and Joan Hall was soon to become their permanent base, and it is here that on the last Thursday of every month, (with the exception of December), the Club will gather, to enjoy the varied programme on offer, between 7.30pm and 9.00pm.

Most months, a demonstrator from outside the Club, will be displaying their particular speciality, offering advice and encouragement to everyone there, who will be looking to hone their own flower arranging skills. Between April and November, on the first Thursday of the month, the evening workshops provide the members with the opportunity to do just that, as any number of vastly experienced arrangers from within the Club are on hand to offer their wisdom and expertise.

Rachel Poole from Sheffield will be the Club’s demonstrator for March, with her highly regarded “Forage, Weave, Create” session.

The demonstrator will usually be a key national figure in the flower arranging world, with knowledge and skills to inspire everyone.

Bourne Flower Club have been keen helpers at the Wisbech Rose Fair in July, East Anglia’s premier flower festival. They have also been very much in evidence at Bourne Lions Family Fun Day on The Well Head in July, and are often called upon to offer guidance and assistance at other local flower shows during the summer months.

The organising committee comprises the President, Janet Turner, (who was one of the founder members), Jackie O’Hare the Secretary, and in her second year as Chair, Ann Northen.

Bourne and District Flower Club is a friendly, very supportive group of individuals, but one who would love to be able to welcome “new blood” into their ranks. If anyone is interested in becoming a member, or just going along at first to see what it involves, then Ann Northen would be delighted to hear from you, on 01778 423353.

Watch as Local Lad’s Goal Goes Viral Stamford AFC under 11 player, Byron-Leigh Taylor‘s spectacular instinctive overhead kick, scored recently has gone viral.

Playing against Glinton and Northborough, ByronLeigh’s dad, Leigh caught the goal on camera, tweeted it and was amazed to see it go viral. It has had 18,000 views and the tweet generated 55,000 impressions in the first 24 hours.

STAMFORD SHOESTRING THEATRE PRESENTS HILARIOUS CLASSIC, ‘TARTUFFE’

(a play by Roger McGough, after Molière) March 7th – 11th at Stamford Arts Centre.

Stamford’s Shoestring Theatre company kicks off an energetic new season with Roger McGough’s brilliant adaptation of Moliere’s classic comedy, “Tartuffe”. The play is re-located to Paris just after the Suez crisis in the 1950s, with the iconic music and fashions of that time.

Familiar characters feature, including the bossy matriarch, indulged daughter, frustrated son, lippy family retainer and the sensible uncle.

Liz Cullum, Director, says: “With its portrayal of a charlatan who manages to fool some of the people most of the time, Tartuffe is a play that has stood the test of time and remains compellingly relevant today. This adaptation by Roger McGough is a brilliant mix of wit, satire, and farce, with just the right amount of serious drama thrown in for good measure, and it is shaping up to be an entertaining night out that you simply wouldn’t want to miss.’

Friends will help spread the love further … with your help Evergreen Care Trust is looking for new friends! With more friends, the Stamford-based charity can help support more older people in a number of really meaningful and practical ways.

In a bid to extend the reach of their services to many more people in the Stamford, Market Deeping and Bourne areas, they’ve put out a call for more friends.

The definition of an Evergreen Care Trust Friend is to sign up to donate a monthly amount. Volunteer and Marketing Co-ordinator, Rosie Maclennan, explains: “We currently help around 500 people in one way or another each week, but we know that so many more could make use of what we can offer. Extra funding will make that possible.”

The money raised from regular donations from Friends pays to train local volunteers to take on a variety of roles. This includes the Befrienders whose friendship helps combat loneliness (80 people currently enjoy this) and a hand and nail service which offers a bit of much appreciated pampering combined with a natter to around 30 people a week.

MEN UNITED IN SONG 2017: SUPPORTING PROSTATE CANCER UK New Year, new you? Are you looking for a fresh challenge which takes you out of your comfort zone, with a great social scene to boot? Then look no further…

Following its phenomenal success last year, Men United in Song is back for 2017, once again raising money for Prostate Cancer UK. Launching in April, the project will sign up a minimum of forty local men with a range of previous singing experience (including none!), to rehearse over twelve weeks for a gala charity concert on Saturday June 24th. Over one hundred men participated last year, raising many thousands of pounds for the charity.

“Two children and a full-on role at work make for little time to switch off, down tools and do something for myself,” says Matthew Johnson, who participated in the project last year.

“After weeks driving past countless banners advertising Men United in Song, I decided to bite the bullet and give it a go. Suddenly I had a hobby, I’d met some great friends, and I’d drunk far more beers than I’d ever imagined! Performing on stage at the Broadway Theatre was a really memorable experience!”

There’s a fantastic social scene, too - after all, the Broadway Theatre has its very own bar! William Prideaux, the director of the project, says, “It’s a real privilege to work with such a cracking bunch of blokes. There’s a real camaraderie among them, and a tight-knit aspect to the group makes them a force to be reckoned with”.

“I joined Men United in Song full of trepidation, but by the end of the first rehearsal everything was different,” agrees Adrian Woodcock. “The group of guys was amazing - everyone was made to feel welcome. Few years in your life can be described as life changing, but 2016 has definitely been one of them!”

Men United in Song kicks off with introduction sessions at the Broadway Theatre on Wednesday 29th, Thursday 30th and Friday 31st March (7-9pm). Rehearsals will be on Thursday evenings from 7.45-9.45pm, starting on Thursday 6th April.

Jack Grover adds: “Even if going to rehearsal was the last thing I felt like doing on the walk back from work, as soon as we started the warm-up those stresses just disappeared. Music is so good for the soul.”

Men United in Song is not all about the singing, or even about the fundraising.

Absolutely no previous experience is required to join, just enthusiasm and a willingness to get stuck in. William adds: “We’re not looking for a Gary Barlow or an Alfie Boe, just guys who want to come along and enjoy singing together. Come VAN along to an HIRE introduction session and find out more; we’re convinced those who do will enjoy themselves and discover how great singing can be.”

Words from the Mayor Councillor Colin Pattison

Our “Night at the Races” charity fundraiser evening was held on Friday January 27th at the Corn Exchange.

Over seventy attended, including various Civic Heads and dignitaries, local business leaders, family and friends. My wife and I are so grateful to all of you who made it such a fantastic success.

It was certainly very loud and boisterous at times, with some half-time hilarity when we had a “Mayor’s Challenge”, whereby myself and Councillor Wayne Lester, the Mayor of Market Deeping, took part in a race inside the hall, both adorned in ostrich costumes!! Well done to Wayne on his “narrow” victory and a personal thank-you for participating and being such a good sport.

March 18th, imaginatively titled, “The Day after St Patrick’s Day Quiz Night”! Keep an eye out on poster boards, the local press and Facebook for exact timings and further information. It’s bound to be another upside down, wonderfully alternative evening with hopefully a bar, raffle, prizes and complete nonsense. Keep those eyes peeled and please come along and support us.

“Community Champion” award reminder. As you may already be aware, Bourne Town Council launched its appeal for nominations for this year’s “Community Champion” in mid-January.

Nominations can be forwarded for both individuals and groups. There are a lot of people out there who are deserving of recognition and I would urge anyone who can think of a possible candidate to submit a nomination. We have already received requests for nomination papers and entries can be submitted right up to the end of March.

The winner(s) will be announced at the Annual Parish Meeting on May 9th in the Bourne Corn Exchange Hall. To request a Community Champion nomination form, please either e-mail, clerk@ bournetc@btconnect.com or call the Town Council on 01778 426123.

Special mention must also go to George’s Fish Shop, for providing such excellent quality fish and chips (these were very well received and had many favourable comments), and also my fellow Town Councillors, Phil, Paul, Brenda, Jane and Helen Crawford, for their help and support throughout the evening.

We must not forget all of the race sponsors and those local businesses and individuals who provided us with raffle prizes and donations in various forms. The evening raised around £855, which will go towards my chosen charities, and I offer sincere thanks once more to all of those involved.

Whilst on the subject of fundraising, our next event looks like being a Quiz Night on Saturday 12

At the Full Council Meeting on Tuesday January 24th, Helen Crawford was duly co-opted to the Council. Congratulations come from the Mayor and fellow Councillors, and the Town Council is now back to its full complement of fifteen Councillors.

As reported in the local press and alluded to by the Mayor in his February column in this magazine, the Town Council did eventually agree on a small increase in the forthcoming Council Tax for 2017 -2018. The justification for this was to keep on top of the summer grass cutting, in response to the envisaged cut-backs from Lincolnshire County Council. Bourne Town Council will be seeking to tender for a contractor to carry out the grass cutting, which will most certainly be in excess of £10,000 per annum. Unfortunately, there look certain to be increases also from Lincolnshire County Council, South Kesteven District Council and Lincolnshire Police Force.

Professional Ear Care and Safe Syringing

our ears are just as important as your eyes and teeth. Whilst most people will visit an optician and a dentist at least once a year and sometimes more for a check-up, the ears tend to be neglected.

Good hearing and healthy ears play an important part in your quality of life. If you have ever experienced reduced, or even lost your hearing for a short period of time, then you’ll know just how frustrating and lonely it can be. For some people, this could make them feel very vulnerable, especially if they live alone.

If you feel you have a problem with your ears, don’t just ignore it.

There are many conditions that can affect your hearing, such as ear infections or ear wax build up. Some are very straightforward to fix and generally, as with so many other things in life, the sooner you have them checked, the sooner you can get back to normal.

Ear wax is completely normal; it is produced by the ear to provide protection. Ears are actually self-cleaning and you should never attempt to remove the wax yourself. Although it can be tempting, using items such as cotton buds can actually push the wax further down the ear canal and end up totally blocking your ear.

The cotton wool tip can even damage your ear canal..... as can matches, hair grips and twigs!

To help reduce the chances of problems with your ears, you should always try and keep them dry and protected from water.

Using an ear plug when you go swimming or even showering is advisable. Wet ears can cause eczema, dermatitis, runny ears and infections. You could use cotton wool as a plug BUT ONLY if you smear it with Vaseline to ensure you do not damage the ear canal with the fibres.

If you have an ear problem, it is recommended that you see a trained, competent practitioner in ear care. They have specialist equipment that allows them to see into your ear canal with the correct lighting, and are able to provide the correct and safe treatment. For ear wax, ear syringing / irrigation, when performed by qualified practitioners, is safe and effective. Please do not try internet “do it yourself ear syringing kits”.

Effective treatment does not necessarily mean expensive treatment. At the Wellhead Practice, Jane Russell offers patients an initial assessment for £10. Your ears will be examined, and you’ll be given recommendations, ranging from general advice to suggested treatment. Ear syringing starts at £30.

Control Stress, Anxiety and Panic attacks with Clinical Hypnotherapy

s anxiety sneaking up on you? Anxiety can build up over a long period of time without us even realising it, or it can come on suddenly, as a result of something such as illness or a change of circumstances. Some people who’ve been fully in control of their lives suddenly find they can’t cope in their daily life.

Panic attacks can occur for no apparent reason or a set of circumstances can bring about an attack. You might experience an overwhelming sense of fear, dread, anxiety or apprehension. There are often physical

symptoms accompanying these feelings including a change in breathing pattern, sweating, nausea, heart palpitations, rapid heart rate, trembling, or even a difficulty swallowing.

Whilst they are frightening, it is unlikely they will cause physical harm, but the self-perpetuating thought of having one stops us from doing the things we want to do or need to do, causing more stress and increasing the potential of having a panic attack.

The good news is that Solution Focused Hypnotherapy has been shown to be a very effective treatment for panic attacks, reducing the frequency in a short period of time, or sustained treatment will often result in them disappearing altogether. Hypnotherapy reduces underlying levels of anxiety, giving you greater control and reducing the emotional arousal. Good morning children! - Helpful Advice for those “Early Morning Battles”!

ornings can be a nightmare if you have to get children ready for school or nursery. If your child decides to be awkward in the morning, it can seriously disrupt household harmony, create stress and spoil the day ahead for the whole family.

It’s not good for you, or your child, to part in a state of unresolved conflict, as this causes anxiety which, in turn, affects their learning and your ability to focus. Aim to always part as friends.

Does this sound familiar: Doesn’t want to get out of bed, won’t get dressed, on a go-slow, refuses to brush their teeth, messes about at breakfast, sibling disputes, would rather play?

So, what can you do?

First, provide an alarm and a morning routine, so your

child knows when to get up and what is expected.

Give challenges, such as – “Can you get downstairs before I count to 20?”

Won’t get dressed Again, children often respond positively to teamwork and a challenge, for example, “You put on the left sock and I’ll put on the right sock. Can you get dressed in 10 minutes?” Counting and timers are often effective.

Remember, chivvy, don’t shout.

Refusing to brush teeth Try some of these: a new toothbrush, flavoured toothpaste, count the number of brush strokes, do it to music, silly rhymes etc.

Offer to help and focus first on a pleasant and positive experience and then improve the quality of the cleaning.

Breakfast Have fun. Vary the food offered. Let your child make a breakfast menu for the week. Read the information on the packet whilst eating the cereal – look for vitamins, ingredients, where it’s manufactured etc. Compare with yesterday’s breakfast. Do a breakfast survey or quiz.

Make placemats from cereal packets.

Would rather play Play is a reward for being ready early. If the child is ready to go to school with five minutes to spare, they can have five minutes “free time” for quiet activity, such as reading, puzzles etc.

Timers Timers are an effective way of encouraging children to do what is required. Big, coloured egg timers, novelty kitchen timers, or computer timers. There are a number of web timers for children that you can download, such as animals, space rockets etc.

Routines can be fun and variety prevents boredom.

Improve your Putting through Effective Practice Are you one of these?

This is not the correct way to practise, as you only get one chance in a game of golf and you have to deal with the result … not have a second go!!

The Exercise – “Five plus One” The objective of this exercise is to hole six putts consecutively, one after the other, in the least number of attempts as possible.

Now, using your full putting routine - marking and cleaning the ball, reading the putt etc. make your first putt. If you are successful, you move onto ball two, and repeat the full process again. You must repeat/hole five putts consecutively from this three foot distance. If you miss one, you have to restart!

When you have holed your fifth putt, you can then move back to the six foot distance tee peg. You only get one chance at this distance. If you hole it, you have completed the challenge and you can record it in your diary. However, if you miss, go back to three feet and to ball one.

Good luck with this exercise, and it is important to remember to make sure you are practising effectively so that you can get the most out of your golf lessons. In this way, you’ll be ready to play your best golf on the course … when it matters.

Gordon’s Photographic Studio – Twenty-one Years in the Town When Gordon Cochran left the R.A.F. in 1996, he decided to use his accumulated experience and expertise as a professional photographer within the R.A.F. to provide a quality and much-needed service for the people of Bourne. His philosophy, of giving good quality work at a price his customers can afford, remains central to his business, twenty-one years on.

His career in the R.A.F. involved many remarkable assignments, including photographing members of the Royal Family. Buyers often don’t realise that on top of the cost of the house itself, there are many other, one-off expenses involved which can soon add up, for example: mortgage application fees, survey fees, Stamp Duty, search fees, land registry fees, legal costs, removal costs and, if you are selling as well as buying, estate agents’ fees.

If you are having a mortgage, your lender will carry out a basic valuation; this will only ensure that the amount they are lending you is protected. It is strongly advised that you also have an independent, more detailed survey carried out. The level of survey you need depends a lot on the individual property you are buying.

Searches are an important part of the process, and there are a wide range of searches that can be carried out, to provide you with more information about the property you plan to purchase.

These might include whether or not the road serving the property

is a publicly adopted highway; whether there are any mineshafts in the immediate vicinity; whether the property is subject to any planning enforcement notices and whether there are any environmental issues which could adversely affect the property.

The process, from having your offer accepted to completion, usually takes about twelve weeks. However, this does depend on the chain. If the property you are purchasing is in a chain, your own purchase will be affected if someone a few links down the chain has problems with their mortgage company, or their searches reveal matters that require further investigation, or if they lose their buyer.

Eat the Season

SPRING GREENS Full of flavour and packed with vitamins C, E and K, iron, potassium, fibre and calcium, spring greens are this season’s superfood.

Even the stems can be used - they are actually sweeter than the leaf. Just slice them more thinly than the green parts. Here are some simple but tasty recipe ideas for them:

With Bacon or Pancetta

Heat a little olive oil in a pan, and fry the bacon or pancetta for a couple of minutes until browned. Add your sliced spring greens and cook for another 5 minutes, stirring continuously.

Season with pepper to taste. For some added flavour, you could try mixing some caraway seeds in with the greens, or some shredded wild garlic leaves.

With Pork or Chicken

Heat some olive oil in a pan and add in the chicken or pork.

Fry on one side until coloured (about 3 minutes) then turn and smear with a little honey and mustard if you wish.

Add some chopped fresh ginger, some sliced spring greens and a little lemon juice. Cook for another 3-5 minutes or until the meat is cooked through.

Season to taste, add some chopped parsley if you wish, then serve with buttered noodles or mashed potatoes.

The time and considerable effort which must have gone in to creating such a romantic feeling within the room was not wasted on the many couples who were enjoying the experience. The set menu was remarkably imaginative.

My crab thermidor, followed by the oysters cooked with pesto and Parmesan, led perfectly into the main feature, fillet of beef with truffle oil and wild mushroom sauce, topped with creamy melted Stilton. So tasty and cooked to perfection. There was barely any room left for the Parma Violet and Love Heart Eton Mess … but I tried!”

Discovering . . . Bourne Cycle Club - Rex Needle

A

nyone familiar with the works of H G Wells will know of his great comic character Alfred Polly who, on inheriting a small legacy, promptly went out and bought himself a bicycle on which to explore the surrounding countryside, his subsequent exploits being described in his novel The History of Mr Polly.

The book was published in 1910 when the bicycle was enjoying immense popularity as a means of discovering England which hitherto had only been possible at a much slower pace, on foot or on horseback.

The development of the bicycle during the late 19th century brought a surge of interest from ordinary people who for the first time could get out and about to explore England at very low cost and for a few pounds, they could purchase a machine that would enable them to go places that were too far to reach on foot and as a result, cycle clubs sprang up in many towns and cities.

The Bourne Cycle Club was formed in 1888 with the vicar, the Rev Hugh Mansfield, as president and a local physician, Dr James Watson Burdwood, as chairman, while its members came from all sections of the population although the majority were working people who had just bought their first machine. It was not a

wealthy organisation but the enthusiasm of the members made up for the lack of funds.

The club met regularly at the Nag’s Head Hotel in the market place and its main activities were weekend outings and races during the summer months from May to October with monthly prizes and a trophy at the end of the season for the winner of the largest number of events but they were all so keen to be out on their cycles that members gathered for a run on Good Friday afternoon in 1890 which fell two weeks before the official start.

The club remained active for some forty years but by 1935 the name had changed to the Bourne Wheelers, still maintaining a packed programme of events each season from June until November. These included club rides to various destinations including King’s Lynn, Hunstanton, St Ives, Oundle and Market Harborough, and a series of competitive events such as hill climbs and speed trials.

But pleasure cycling predominated as the main objective although this enthusiasm was gradually being eroded by the popularity of the motor car and the original impetus which inspired the formation of the club soon began to wane.

Ginger Fox Café – “an amazing and highly successful first week” Last month, we were referring to “Exciting Things to Come” at the newly refurbished Ginger Fox Café on Bourne’s Abbey Road. Sure enough, the effervescent Jane Webb duly delivered on her promise. She was even having to turn people away!

The “Great British Ginger Fox Brownie Taste Off”, during the first week of the grand opening, saw Phil Bonham and Alison Waters pitched head-to-head in a mouth-watering challenge.

The winner’s brownies were then to be the chosen option to be on sale to the public. Jane takes up the story: “There was much debate during the challenge and, at times, there was a clear girl/boy divide! The voting was so very close that we are bending the rules slightly. Alison’s brownie was the winner but, as it was so close, we have decided to offer you both! Well, why not? After discussions with various discerning customers, we have decided that Alison’s brownies are going to be available in the café, (served warm with ice cream), and both Phil and Alison’s brownies will be served in the cake shop as a take-away. Thank you all for participating in the challenge and it was great getting your feedback.”

The Other B.B.C. The Bourne Business Chamber Changes on the Way? The January meeting of the Chamber was attended by fifteen members, and a very useful preliminary discussion took place, regarding the very nature of forthcoming Chamber meetings. Views were aired on whether one speaker, rather than two, would be preferable; on how some more business-focused parts could be introduced in future; and how the Chamber and its function might best be re-branded.

Further discussions on these issues will follow.

Frustrated with your Cash Isa Returns? Then Consider an Alternative Strategy

A

s Financial Advisers, we are often asked where to invest money. Our job is to understand your objectives, how much risk you are willing to take and then suggest a suitable investment.

In terms of tax efficiency, pension investment is the most efficient, followed by Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs). Both investments grow largely tax-free; the main difference is that with a pension investment, the member gets tax relief on contribution, but the benefits are taxed (except the first 25%); the ISA doesn’t attract tax relief on the contributions, but is not taxed on withdrawal either.

With regards to an ISA, your allowance of £15,240 can be invested into cash, stocks and shares, or any combination of the two, during the 2016/17 tax year. This allowance will rise to £20,000 in the tax year 2017/18.

Savers who wish to invest some or all of their allowance in stocks and shares can choose from a vast array of investment assets, including equities, bonds and property, which allows you to create a balanced portfolio, or use your ISA allowance to target one specific investment to complement your wider portfolio.

Choosing your own shares can be risky and, unless it forms part of a wider portfolio, can concentrate your investment around the fortunes of just a few companies.

Many investors choose to put their ISA allowance into one or more collective funds, which can reduce risk by accessing a selection of assets within the one investment.

There are many funds available – some prioritise income, while others focus on capital growth. Funds are grouped into sectors to give you an indication of their aims – for example, the ‘Mixed Investment 20-60%

shares’ category will have no more than 60% in shares, while more aggressive funds can be found in, for example, UK Smaller Companies or Global Emerging Markets sectors.

Historically, funds with high equity content have tended to offer better long-term returns than investments in cash, bonds or commercial property. However, as we all know, the value of equities can go down as well as up and can be volatile. If you want your ISA to generate an income stream, you might consider a fund that delivers regular dividend payment, such as equity income, commercial property or bonds.

Ultimately, your ISA choices should not only reflect your aims, but also sit comfortably within your wider portfolio.

If you want to make sure you have covered all the options available, you should seek professional advice.

The value of the investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back as much as you put in.

Changes in rates of exchange may have an adverse effect on the value, price or income of investments. You may not be able to cash in a property investment when you want because property can’t easily be converted to cash. If this is the case, dealing maybe suspended meaning your request may not be carried out. The valuation of property is generally a matter of valuer’s opinion rather than fact. Property may sell for less than valued which would reduce the fund value.

o yes, I’m plagiarizing that famous TV show again, but it’s true. Spring is closing on us at speed, and I don’t doubt that all of us are grateful for that. Warmer weather, longer days - what’s not to like? It’s time to don the rubber gloves and do the big spring-clean, then wade into the bramble-festooned wastelands that once were our back gardens. Who knows what terrors may lurk in the towering, long grass and weeds, but we will be victorious - the quest for the barbecue and kids’ bikes shall not be in vain! Google Photo - Edit, Share and Protect Your Images

hose of you that used Google Picasa may have already seen the new cloud based replacement Google Photo, but may have ignored it. I recently started to use this service and I have been very impressed.

Not only can you use Google Photo to catalogue and view your photos on your PC, but there is also an app for your Android or Apple iOS device. You can edit, store, backup and share images as you wish.

The way it works is to set up a cloud based (internet) storage area where all your photos from your PC, phone, tablet and associated apps are stored. This area is synchronised with your devices so you can view your photo collection from any device and anywhere where you have Internet access.

An extra benefit of using Google Photo is that the storing of high definition images up to 16Megapixel is free of charge. This definition should be fine for almost everyone, other than the very keen photographer, so your online storage won’t cost you a penny.

To install Google Photo on a PC go to https://photos. google.com/apps . Here you can also find Android and iOS versions, but I would recommend loading these from your device app store. Once installed, you can start enjoying the benefits. Note that during the install process you will need to provide your Google login and password, or if you haven’t yet got one, create a new Google login.

On completion of the install, Google Photo will start to copy your photos from your Photo folders to store online. If the images are too large, it will automatically resize them for you. Be patient, as if you have a lot of photos it will take many hours to upload. Note too that there is a ‘count’ bug that often reports that it is copying more images than it actually is. Ignore this – it will sort itself out.

Eventually all of your images will be copied over and available to view on any of your devices running Google Photo. You can then sort them in to albums if you so wish.

Google photo will also make use of the data that accompanies your images.

If your device possesses a GPS, as most smartphones and some cameras do, then it will also suggest albums based on the location data.

Another interesting feature is the Assistant which automatically creates photos, videos, enhanced versions and slideshows of your images based on date, content and location.

Even if you don’t make use of the various tools, Google Photo offers an excellent way of backing up those treasured images.

opefully, winter is receding and far more work can be carried out on the allotment or vegetable garden as the days are lengthening: the increase in hours of light triggers new growth. Although it may not feel like it, temperatures slowly increase and the soil should start to warm up, particularly towards the end of the month. Although there are plenty of seeds to sow, it is worth keeping an eye on the weather forecast as we can still get some pretty cold weather in March and some heavy frosts.

If you have chitted your first early potatoes and the ground is not frozen, they can be planted out from mid-March or early April, but it is well worth covering them to protect them from the late frosts. Don’t forget to add a light sprinkling of fertiliser to the trench, and plant earlies about 30cm (12 inches) apart with 40 - 50cm (16 – 20 inches) between rows, with the shoots pointing upwards. Second earlies and maincrop need more growing space, so plant them about 38cm (15 inches) apart and 75cm (30 inches) between rows. When the shoots appear, earth up each plant by covering it with a ridge of soil.

If you’re short of space, try growing potatoes in an adequately drained container, (a dustbin works well) or you can buy special potato growing bags. Almost half-fill the container with multi-purpose compost or good quality, fertile garden soil.

Then nestle the seed potatoes into the top of the compost and cover. When the growth starts coming through, keep covering with soil until you reach a few cms from the top.

If you want to grow asparagus, now is the time to prepare your bed and plant the crowns by digging a trench 12 inches deep and adding some well-rotted manure. Make a 4 inch ridge at the base and spread the roots of the crown over the ridge, replace the soil, leaving the tips just visible. Water in and add mulch. Don’t forget to leave the asparagus for two years before actually harvesting – it’s well worth the wait!

Other jobs for this month include:● Prepare seed beds and apply fertilisers. ● Feed over-wintering crops using blood, fish and bone meal, chicken manure or seaweed–based organic fertiliser. ● Plant out onion sets, shallots and garlic. ● Rosemary and sage will benefit from a good trim, and chives and mint can be propagated by dividing them and re-planting. ● Start weeding, digging out perennials and hoe regularly to get rid of emerging annuals. ● Sow aubergines, chillies and peppers indoors. ● Lettuces and other salad crops can be sown either indoors or outdoors under cloches or in cold frames, and peas and broad beans can also be started off under cloches.

Tough new laws brought in from March 1st 2017 by police forces around the country will see those caught using their phone at the wheel facing a £200 fine and six points on their licence. If they are caught a second time, they would face a minimum six-month driving ban and would also be summoned to appear in court where they could be fined up to £1,000.

The RAC recently surveyed 1,714 motorists and 31% said they used a hand-held phone behind the wheel compared with just 8% in 2014.

The number of drivers who said they sent a message or posted on social media rose from 7% to 19%, while 14% said they had taken a photograph or video whilst driving.

While to some it may seem acceptable to punch in those digits whilst driving, it has been proven that just for a couple of seconds of distraction, the consequences can be devastating.

In Memory of a Friend

everal months ago, I lost a dear friend. I had known her for nearly twenty-six years and first saw her when she was six weeks old. In this time I had visited her most days. Tilly was a half-Irish Draught, halfthoroughbred horse.

I first saw Tilly while on a day out with a young lady who later became my wife, Anne.

Not knowing Anne as well as I do now, I saw no problem when she suggested we visit a stud farm in Cheshire on our way back. It was here that we saw a little six week old foal, the colour of a conker, hiding behind her mother, but at the same time very inquisitive about who we were.

We bought her, there and then, and spent many months visiting her until she was weaned.

longer than I’d known most people. Animals hold a special place in our hearts. When I lost Tilly, I lost a part of my life and a part of me. This may not be like losing a mother or father or a child, but is none the less a time of mourning.

When a horse is put to sleep, there is something much more physical about it, as compared to dogs and cats.

When 700 kg of horse sinks to the ground after the euthanasia injection, and she gradually breathes her last, it just has more physical impact. After she was gone, l had to organise her cremation. There is no easy way to move a horse of this size.

Tilly’s ashes are with me at home and I have wonderful memories of her.

My wife and I spent hours with her while she was trained. I was the first person to get on her back. She was always gentle and always looked after me while riding. She taught me a huge amount about horses. I visited her several times nearly every day, went on holidays to the New Forest, Ludlow and had numerous day trips to the beach and other places. She was a joy to be with.

In her later years, both Tilly and I retired from the riding. She developed PPID (Cushing’s disease) and needed daily medication.

She was prone to feet abscesses and had occasional spasmodic colic. All of these we treated, and she stayed healthy until she developed a severe colic that proved untreatable, and so she had to be put to sleep.

Some people do not understand the intense loss you feel when you lose an animal like this. Tilly was my friend who I had known

Consultation for Learner Drivers on Motorways

T

he Department for Transport and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency have been collecting views about measures to allow learner drivers to drive on motorways, whilst being supervised by driving instructors with dual controlled driving school cars. The consultations ran until February 17th 2017, and included improved training for motorcyclist and car learners.

As the “National standard for driving cars and light vans” clearly stipulates the expectation of learners to know how to drive on motorways (element 3.1.4 of the standard), it has always been rather illogical that the law has prevented them from doing precisely that. Professional driving instructors are guided by the standard as it “…describes the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to be a safe and responsible driver…” With my own driving school, I have always been very happy to provide free

sessions on a motorway after a pupil passes the test, just so that they can experience the feel of it for the first time with the reassurance of a driving instructor next to them.

Whilst motorways do have an impressive safety record given the volume of traffic using them, it is key to demonstrate to learner drivers the potential risks associated with driving on these faster moving roads. A moment’s distraction or inattention to key safety concepts, such as maintaining separation gaps and ensuring you can stop in the distance that is seen to be clear, can have fatal consequences, purely due to the distance that is travelled per second.

Hopefully, this rather odd situation will be resolved with the passing of legislation that is expected to come into force in 2018, if all goes well.

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings “Bilking” - (What’s that all about then?)

C

ontinuing with my discussion on offences under the Theft Act 1978, the next offence I want to consider is that of making off without payment, otherwise known as ‘bilking’. This is a fairly common offence, with the vast majority of offences occurring at petrol stations.

Section 3 of the Theft Act 1978 states: 3(1) a person who, knowing that payment on the spot for any goods supplied or service done is required or expected from him, dishonestly, makes off without having paid as required or expected and with intent to avoid payment of the amount due shall be guilty of an offence.

The term ‘goods supplied or services done’ in relation to the offence is not defined in the Act, but it includes filling up your vehicle with fuel and driving off, not paying for a meal in a restaurant, or not paying a taxi fare.

Making off involves dishonestly leaving the place, or spot, where payment is required. As can be seen in the examples above, once you have filled up your vehicle, eaten your meal or arrived at your destination, payment is quite rightly expected.

The final element of this offence is the intent of the suspect in not paying for the services or goods supplied.

Therefore, if it is a genuine mistake there is no offence.

However, in this case the mistake will need to be recognised by the person who has not paid and who must then make arrangements to pay before the police visit.

The offence carries a maximum sentence, on indictment (Crown Court) of two years’ imprisonment.

Bilkings at petrol stations have proven to be quite a challenge for the police. Where else can you obtain goods away from the point of payment, and be expected to go into a building to pay for those goods? I have discussed this offence recently on Twitter which started a bit of a debate. There is the technology available to prevent this offence; however, it is also recognised that petrol stations rely heavily on customers coming into the shop to buy other goods, whilst paying for their fuel.
