Mother’s Day and the start of British Summer Time already – both on Sunday, March 30th, by the way!

“Life doesn’t come with a manual - it comes with a mother”, it was once suggested. We all need help in finding our way through all the various ups and downs of life, and there, right from day one has been that wonderful (sometimes), smiling (often) and loving (always) lady we are proud to call “Mum”. If our mother is no longer with us in person, we can still spend time remembering all those magical moments we had together.

This month, there’s a “mum-related feel” to your magazine, and now we can also look towards Easter. Let’s hope by then we’ll have turned the corner weather-wise, dried ourselves out and started thinking of those long, warm summer days to come.

At my time of life, it’s not sensible to wish the weeks away as there’s definitely more behind me than lie in front, but I can’t wait to see the back of this winter.

Now I was born in the Fens and have lived here for almost all of my life. Consequently, although I have travelled extensively and know there are many more attractive places to live, I still love our flatlands and big skies... except for this time of year.

On a dark, dismal, cloudy and rainy day in late winter (particularly February) my heart sinks – especially if it is a Tuesday, which for some reasons too involved to explain here, I have a particular dislike of.

I’m looking forward to the brighter weather which should arrive in spring. Checking my diary I see British Summer Time arrives on Sunday, March 30th... I’m counting the days!

ne of the simplest ways to enhance your workflow on a Windows computer is to master keyboard shortcuts. These combinations of keys can perform functions quickly, often bypassing the need for a mouse or navigating through multiple menus.

The following are some of the most useful Windows shortcuts.

Basic navigation shortcuts help you move around the desktop, manage windows, and access essential features: ● Win + D: Minimise all open windows and display the desktop.

Press again to restore the windows. ● Win + E: Open File Explorer, providing quick access to your files and directories. ● Alt + Tab: Switch between open applications. Hold Alt and tap Tab to cycle through the windows.

PRE-NUPTIAL AGREEMENTS: PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

Moving offices, like many life events, requires careful planning to ensure a smooth transition.

The same is true for marriage – while it’s an exciting milestone, it’s also a time to think about the future.

One important consideration, which is becoming increasingly common, is whether to put a prenuptial agreement in place before tying the knot.

The idea of discussing financial matters before a wedding may not seem romantic, but with more than fifty percent of marriages ending in divorce, having a pre-nup in place is a practical step to protect both parties. Think of it like an insurance policy – you hope you’ll never need it, but it provides peace of mind just in case.

What is a Pre-Nup? A pre-nuptial agreement sets out how assets and property will be divided if a marriage ends in divorce.

It can also outline arrangements in the event of one partner’s death, usually supported by a will.

Although pre-nups are not yet legally binding in England, courts are increasingly taking them into account - provided they are drafted correctly and fairly. This means that if you and your partner have

agreed on financial arrangements, the courts are likely to uphold them rather than impose different terms later.

Who Should Consider a Pre-Nup? While any couple can benefit from a pre-nup, they are particularly useful in the following situations: • One or both partners have significant assets acquired before the marriage and wish to protect them.

• A family inheritance or future financial gift needs to be safeguarded.

• Either party has children from a previous relationship and wants to secure assets for them.

• There are existing debts that should be accounted for separately.

• The couple’s financial affairs are complex, such as business ownership.

A Sensible Discussion Far from being a sign of distrust, having a pre-nup in place can strengthen a relationship by fostering open discussions about financial expectations.

Many couples who take this step find that, should difficulties arise in the future, they are more likely to adhere to their pre-agreed terms, reducing stress and legal costs.

Making Tax Digital - Times Are Changing Scott Bishop The Count Down Is Progressing We are now just over 12 months away from the introduction of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self-Assessment (MTD ITSA). From April 2026 this is going to be one of the biggest changes to the UK tax system since the introduction of SelfAssessment in 1996.

What Does This Mean For Individuals?

There will be a requirement for certain taxpayers to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC via MTD compliant software, all with the aim to make the UK’s tax administration more efficient. There will also be a requirement to ensure that a formal Self Assessment tax return continues to be submitted, and this will then confirm the details for the given tax year.

Initially this affects individuals who have income from trading and property of over £50,000, those with income between £30,000 and £50,000 will be required to join from April 2027, with an expectation that those with income over £20,000 will be required to join by the end of this parliament.

These values represent the turnover arising, and trading and rental turnover should not be considered in isolation, but together to determine the requirement to be within the system.

There are exemptions to the requirements, including foster carers, those with no National Insurance numbers and trustees, executors and administrators.

Reporting Requirements As mentioned, there is a requirement for quarterly submissions, taking either 1 or 6 April as the start date for each year and working forward from that, for further information see the table.

It should be noted that a separate submission will be required for each separate trade, and a further one for the property income. A final declaration will be required, although this will be due with the normal Self Assessment tax return.

There is an expected “soft landing” in terms of penalties, however this will become much clearer when the regime commences.

Software Individuals will be required to use software to keep their records and submit returns to HMRC using specialist software, which of course we have and can assist with.

It is possible to use spreadsheets, however the information must then be digitally transferred to authorised software before submission to HMRC, and not retyped.

EXCITING NEWS FOR VOLUNTEERS

he teams at Cambridgeshire Council for Volunteer Services (CCVS) and Hunts Forum are delighted to announce that support services for both volunteers and voluntary sector groups will continue to increase across the Fens.

The two organisations will merge to become Support Cambridgeshire from April 1st this year.

It’s exciting news for those interested in volunteering or wanting to know more. Throughout March, Sarah and Rima welcome you to their ‘Volunteer Blend’ events in the Fenland towns for an informal chat over tea and coffee. They’ll guide you through the volunteering opportunities available and the Volunteer Cambs portal www.volunteercambs.org.uk where you can register your interest and find your ideal role.

September 2024 saw the launch of Support Fenland, a five-year project funded by the National Lottery Community Fund to support the voluntary

sector across the Fens including Wisbech, March, Whittlesey, Chatteris and surrounding villages.

Networking events will continue in each Fenland town as well as across the district. The free training courses are always popular, both in-person and on-line with some excellent topics in the pipeline.

FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY

By Bridget Hunter We serve the Fens including South Lincs, North Cambs and West Norfolk We are a group interested in learning and sharing information about family history and are for anyone, no matter from where they originate. We are a member of the Family History Federation and cover the Fenland area of North Cambridgeshire, West Norfolk and South East Lincolnshire.

RESEARCHERS Our researchers are asked for help in various ways.

One of them is busy searching for the history of the founder of a local business. Another one was asked by a member who lives some distance away to find the grave of an ancestor buried in Wisbech. The researcher found it, then cleaned it and took a photo of the grave and sent it to them.

RESEARCH SESSIONS Our team of researchers are in Wisbech Library on the first Tuesday of each month from 10am12noon, offering help with family research. Visitors are welcome, no matter where your family originated. Also in Baytree Garden Centre at Hilgay near Downham Market on the second Monday of the month from 11am-2.30pm. We can be found in the restaurant. We are willing to go to other places but we do need access to Wi-Fi. We offer our research for free. If you need help but unable to attend please contact us.

MONTHLY MEETINGS Our meetings are held at Wisbech Library at 7pm-9pm on the fourth Thursday of the month (no

meetings August & December). Everyone is welcome to attend. Visitors are asked to give a donation to help us pay for the room. Our meetings usually include an interesting speaker on various subjects, plus refreshments and general exchange of information and help with research.

Our February 27th, the speaker was due to be Kevin RODGERS with a talk about the history of Wisbech Castle. Our March 27th meeting will be a special one with members exchanging ideas on finding and displaying family history and on April 24th Alan JOHNSON will be our guest speaker. Non-members always welcome EVENTS TEAM Our team is always happy to create a special display to suit your theme to bring added interest to your event. If you have an event coming up, please contact us and will be happy to support you.

SPEAKERS They are available to attend groups and clubs to give talks in the local area. Our talks are very amusing as well as informative plus a display of items for added interest. he 21st East Anglian Game & Country Fair will take place on Saturday, April 26th & Sunday, April 27th, 2025 at the prestigious Euston Estate, home to The Duke and Duchess of Grafton. Euston Estate is situated just off the A11 at Elveden, on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. This two-day event welcomes world class attractions each year.

Main Arena displays confirmed for this year’s show include The OMG FMX Team, performing breathtaking jumps and stunts mid-air. Peter Pavlov and the team of riders will also be available to meet the crowd and have photos taken.

Members enjoy chatting with other Stroke Survivors ,Guest Speakers. Trips to the theatre and places of interest to get them rehabilitated back into the community.

At the last meeting of the month we are joined by a qualified specialist keep fit instructor to get survivors moving again.

We are a friendly bunch come and join us.
