The English weather certainly knows how to confuse us all. We’re not long out of a period of extremes with torrential rains and flooding, and now we’re basking in glorious sunshine in the driest spring in years! Guess what … more heavy rain is forecast, so that must mean it’s nearly summer! Whatever the weather brings, I’m sure you’ll find plenty to find informative, interesting and useful in this issue of your “favourite freebie” magazine.
Here’s hoping we may all have a super al fresco month, with so much happening in our local towns and villages. Judging by how the recent VE80 Celebrations went, we seem to be able to put together some memorable moments that serve to bring our communities together. Long may that continue!
A reminder that on Sunday, June 15th we all have the opportunity to shower our loved ones with goodies on Father’s Day. Big love to my husband, Chris, dad Bill and father-in-law Rich.
Bourne’s motor racing heritage will be clearly in the spotlight on Saturday June 14th with our annual Picnic in the Park which will include the homecoming of Graham Hill’s famous “Old Faithful” F1 racing car. Such an ironic twist therefore that Dick Salmon, former BRM engineer and author of two magnificent books about his love for the BRM and for Raymond Mays should be absent from the celebrations, having sadly passed away just weeks away from the event and a few months before his 100th birthday.
A reminder that June 15th is Father’s Day - that annual opportunity to give him/me some respite from kitchen and garden duties and shower him/me with treats!
And finally:
✦ Good news for all fans of the Mr Men books with two new titles –one is a useless decorator called Mr Bit and the other is his mate, a hopeless footballer called Mr Sitter.
✦ Two fish in a tank – one says, “How do you drive this thing?” Enjoy the read!

We are really excited to share some of our success stories with you guys out there that follow us. We take great pride in letting you know just how much our new fat busting and toning machine is helping people on their weight loss journeys and general body confidence.
We all read stories and see pictures on social media and in magazines that look amazing, but we know are not realistic or half the time even true, but these are three actual examples of three ‘real’ ladies and the experience they have had at our clinic.
Why not give it a go? It could change your life too!
Wow!!! Sculpt pro has literally saved my sanity, Made me believe in myself and given me my oomph back. I was clearly dubious (who wouldn't be ?!) but honest it's been one of the best things l've ever done. Lou is so friendly, made me feel at ease and so comfortable getting my belly out! and now wow- eating healthier, walking more along side this treatment - 2.5 inches gone, 9lb gone and the visible difference is unbelievable- I can't thankyou guys enough for giving me my confidence back." Laney D
I had three sessions of the liposculpt and I could notice a difference even after the first session. The treatment has massively improved the condition and appearance of the skin on my stomach, something I have always been conscious of after having two children. No matter how much I exercise, this area has never improved, however it now looks much better and the skin is much firmer and toned. Definitely recommend." Sarah
I am very impressed with the difference that it has made on my legs, after just 6 sessions, it's made me feel more confident in my body, Louise is so lovely and made me feel so comfortable from the moment I got there." Lucy £300 for a course of 3 or £500 for a course of 6

Two years on from establishing her successful mobile microsuction ear wax removal service (Bourne Ear Care), Julia Brown has been delighted to welcome her daughter, Kayla into the business in December. A dental nurse with twenty years’ experience, many of the skills Kayla has acquired will transfer to her new role. Besides learning about the anatomy of the ear, Kayla has learned how to test hearing, fine tune hearing aids, take aural impressions and of course, she has also learned all about ear wax removal, (clinical and practical).
Ear wax removal is not regulated, so anyone from any background can enrol on a weekend course, then on the Monday they can be removing ear wax. It has been so important that Kayla has undergone comprehensive training and now, having completed her course and qualified as a Hearing Care Assistant, Kayla is taking on appointments for home visits.
Both Julia and Kayla are members of the British Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists (BSHAA), and the Association of Hearing Health Professionals
(AIHHP). These are professional bodies committed to upholding the highest standards of audiology.
Bourne Ear Care covers South LincolnshireBourne, Boston, Crowland, Grantham, Holbeach, Market Deeping (The Deepings), Sleaford, Spalding, Stamford, and the Peterborough area. For almost two years, Julia has been fully accredited to perform microsuction of ear wax within the Lincolnshire Community Surgery Scheme, from the Galletly Practice in Bourne.

A 100% professional home service
My experience was great due to a very professional home service delivered on time andat a very competitive price. My left ear was causing concern with a gradual loss of hearing despite wearing hearing aids. Following treatment my hearing improved with a much crisper overall sound.” Ivan
Great service, friendly and effective.
The ability to be treated at home is fantasticallyuseful when working fulltime. Julia and her colleague were friendly and knowledgeable; they explained the elements of the process prior to it and then talked me through follow up and ongoing care actions. My treatment was the perfect blend of efficiency and friendliness with a positive outcome. Many thanks team, I will certainly recommend you to all my friends and family.”

If you’re about to travel outside of the UK, you may need to be vaccinated before you set off for your trip. The childhood vaccination programme in the UK protects you from a number of diseases, but you may need extra vaccinations or antimalarials if you’re planning on visiting certain parts of the world.
Getting vaccinated can help prevent you from getting ill if you’re exposed to diseases which we don’t normally have in the UK. We can help you understand how to keep your risks low while abroad and help you work out which vaccinations and antimalarials you may want to consider depending on things like:
• Which regions you’ll be visiting
• What activities you’ll be doing
• Your age and general health
Some travel vaccinations may be needed several weeks before departure. Ideally you should see us six to eight weeks before travelling, but we may still be able to help if you’re leaving sooner, even days before you travel.

When people hear the words “Lasting Power of Attorney” (LPA), they often imagine it’s something you sort out in your seventies or eighties — like a will, or one of those beige electric recliner chairs. But the truth is, LPAs are just as important for people in their thirties and forties as they are for anyone in retirement.
A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows you to appoint someone you trust to make decisions for you if, for any reason, you’re unable to make them yourself. There are two types: one covers property and financial affairs, the other, health and welfare. Together, they form a vital safety net — not just for older adults facing dementia, but for any of us whose lives could take an unexpected turn.
NICK ASH, Managing Director W&P Legal
Let me give you an example.
A client in her early forties — let’s call her Sarah — was a busy professional with two young children and no existing health conditions. Then, out of nowhere, she suffered a brain aneurysm. Thankfully, she survived, but she was in a coma for three weeks and needed months of rehabilitation.
Without an LPA in place, her husband couldn’t access her bank account to pay the mortgage or deal with her employer or private pension provider. More distressingly, decisions about her medical care had to be made without a clear legal authority. It added strain to an already heart-breaking situation.
Contrast that with another client, Alex, a thirtyfive-year-old entrepreneur who set up both types of LPA after starting his business. When he was unexpectedly hospitalised after a serious cycling accident, his appointed attorneys were able to manage his accounts, liaise with his clients, and make care decisions without delays or complications.
LPAs are about planning ahead — not because we expect the worst, but because we want the people we trust, to be in the driver’s seat if life throws us a curveball.
At W & P Legal, we specialise in making this process straightforward, sensitive, and stress-free. Whether you’re twenty-eight or eighty-eight, setting up an LPA is one of the most responsible things you can do for yourself and your loved ones.

Have you been refused a mortgage or equity release due to spray foam?
If you suspect you’ve been misled or had a poor-quality removal, act now! Contact us for a FREE survey and expert advice before it’s too late.
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) states that spray foam may affect a property's valuation, particularly if applied incorrectly. Spray foam can reduce airflow in the roof, potentially leading to issues like mould, wood rot, and reduced structural stability.
❌ Foam left behind in eaves – Often hidden and hard to reach without proper access (scaffolding may have been necessary).
❌ Torn or damaged roofing felt – Careless removal can cause holes, leading to leaks and structural issues.
❌ Foil tacked to rafters – A common trick used to hide incomplete removal, preventing proper inspection.
Structural Damage – Undetected spray foam can weaken your roof over time. Devalued Property – Incomplete removal may leave your home unmortgageable Higher Costs – A second removal job can be expensive if not done right the first time.

As we approach retirement, it’s natural to want a plan that gives us everything: security, flexibility, tax efficiency, and peace of mind. But you can’t have it all - at least not without giving something up.
That’s not a flaw in the system. It’s just how financial planning works. And understanding that can help you make better, more confident decisions about your future.
The truth is, nearly every financial decision comes with pros and cons. Here are a few common examples:
● Pensions offer generous tax relief today - but you’ll need to wait until later in life to access those funds.
● Gifting money to loved ones now can reduce the impact of Inheritance Tax - but it also means letting go of control over that money.
with Rob Schwarz
The real art of financial planning isn’t about finding a perfect solution; it’s about crafting a plan that strikes the right balance for you. That means blending the benefits and drawbacks in a way that fits your personal goals, comfort level, and lifestyle.
The real art of financial planning isn’t about finding a perfect solution; it’s about crafting a plan that strikes the right balance for you.
● Flexibility in how you draw your retirement income gives you more freedom - but it may come with fewer guarantees or protections.
None of these choices are “right” or “wrong”they’re just different tools, and each comes with its own set of trade-offs.
This is where a bespoke financial plan makes all the difference. It’s not a generic, one-size-fits-all product. It’s a thoughtful, tailored strategy built around your unique situation, values, and vision for life after work.
If you’re thinking about how best to balance the trade-offs ahead of your retirement, we’re here to help. It starts with an open conversation - no jargon, no pressurejust clarity about what’s possible.

* A pension is a long-term investment not normally accessible until 55 (57 from April 2028). The value of your investment (and any income from them) can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you invested.

For many people, getting onto the property ladder feels out of reach due to high house prices, rising rents, and the large deposits often required for a mortgage. Shared Ownership is a government-backed scheme designed to make homeownership more affordable and accessible. It offers a middle ground between renting and full ownership by allowing you to buy a share of a property and pay rent on the rest.
1
What is Shared Ownership?
Shared Ownership is a government-backed scheme that allows you to buy a portion (usually 25%–75%) of a home and pay rent on the rest. It’s designed to make getting onto the property ladder more affordable.
2 Who is eligible?
Mainly first-time buyers or people who previously owned a home but can’t afford one now. Income limits apply—under £80,000 (£90,000 in London).
3 Can I own the whole property eventually?
Yes. You can buy more shares over time through “staircasing” until you reach full ownership.
Whether you’re a first-time buyer or someone who can’t currently afford to buy outright, Shared Ownership could be a smart stepping stone.
4 How much deposit do I need?
A deposit is required, but it’s only based on the share you’re buying, making it cheaper than a full purchase.
5 What ongoing costs are involved?
You’ll pay:
• Mortgage on your share
• Rent on the rest (usually 2.75% of the unowned share per year)
• Service charges and ground rent
• Legal and mortgage fees
6 Can I make changes to the home?
Yes, minor decorating is fine, but structural changes usually need permission.
7 Can I rent out the property?
Not unless you own 100% of it. The scheme is meant for your main residence.
8 What happens when I want to sell?
The housing association gets the first chance to find a buyer. If they don’t, you can sell on the open market.
9 What types of properties are available?
Mostly new builds, though resale properties are available too.
10 Is this just for key workers?
No, it’s open to a broad range of buyers, although key workers may get priority.

Ready for a dream break or a summer getaway? Beware! Holidaymakers are being urged to do their research before booking an online break, as new data reveals victims lost a total of almost £11.2 million to holiday fraud last year, an average loss per victim of £1844! The warning comes from Action Fraud, the national fraud and cybercrime reporting service.
Here’s how to protect yourself from holiday fraud:
• Do some research first to check that the company is legitimate. Use consumer websites, or reviews from people (or organisations) that you trust.
• Look for the ABTA, ABTOT or ATOL logos on the company’s website.
• Use a credit card for payments (if you have one). Many of these protect online purchases as part of the Consumer Credit Act.
• Only provide the required details at the checkout. When making your payment, only fill in the mandatory details (often marked with an asterisk) such as your address.
Meanwhile, don’t forget to add home security and property protection to your checklist. Simple security measures will help make the home less attractive to thieves, not only offering peace of mind, but will mean your happy holiday won’t turn into a home-coming heartache.
While you're away:
• Consider getting a relative, friend or neighbour to park on your drive if you have one, open and close the curtains, collect the post from the mat and water the garden.
• Be mindful of what you write or photos you share on social media which could identify you as being away on holiday.
• Ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property and leave a contact number so they can get in contact with you if anything happens.
Prevention is always better than cure and now is a great time to act on installing or upgrading any CCTV security / lighting or alarm systems – or even changing the locks.
Visit www.safelocaltrades.com for all the details of our reliable and reputable security professionals, including alarm
and locksmith.
Following the amazing news of funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the team at the Old Town Hall in Bourne are preparing for a new phase in the history of this 200-year-old building at the heart of Bourne. The building itself will be closed from the end of April 2025 to allow for it to be emptied and prepped for the ensuing construction work, which is expected to begin later in the year.
Over one hundred wonderful events have been organised and run in the building by the volunteer trustee team over the past few years. With the help of a loyal group of volunteers and ever-supportive visitors, the Old Town Hall has built up a good reputation as a welcoming and friendly venue.
The heartening news is that events by the same team will continue beyond April! You will now see The Old Town Hall ‘Pop-Up’ events at alternative venues in the local area in a very similar vein, aiming to be as vibrant and welcoming as ever.
The first ‘Pop-Up’ event is on Friday June 13th at 7.30pm in the Red Hall. "You Can Not Be Serious; Tales of a Wimbledon Umpire 1988-2012" is a talk by Alan Gray MBE. For tickets at £12.50, please visit the website. There will be a licensed bar. (Wimbledon Pimm’s Cocktail anyone, or maybe Robinson’s Barley Water?)
Mya Denniston, aged seven, from Deeping St James, who successfully matched all the Easter egg images in our April issue with the twenty-six shops and offices taking part in our annual Easter Egg Hunt.
Congratulations Mya, and it’s lovely to hear that you are happy to share your Chocolate Explosion prize with your family, (you have the chocolate, and they have the wrappers, eh?)
Please continue to check the website www.bournetownhall.org.uk and social media to see where they’ll be ‘popping up’ next!

We had an unforgettable time at our recent “Colour Run”, where the entire school - children, parents and staff alike - enjoyed a fantastic, fun-filled event. As we raced around the course, we were covered head to toe in vibrant coloured powder, creating a truly spectacular sight! This event was to raise money for the Samaritans on behalf of Mrs Russell, whose dedication to supporting mental health and wellbeing continues to inspire us all.
Our Reception class has been incredibly lucky to receive a wonderful upgrade to their outdoor learning and play area! The new space is designed to encourage exploration, creativity, and handson learning, with a variety of exciting zones to help children develop essential skills.
We still have places available in our next Reception class- if your child is due to start school in September, please contact the school for more details.
Finally, we commemorated the 80th anniversary of VE Day with the school community coming together for a lively and colourful picnic lunch, where children proudly dressed in red, white, and blue, or in authentic 1940s-style clothing, to honour this historic occasion. Adding to the sense of history, we were joined by two World War II army vehicles, which helped bring the past to life for our students.
Year 2 pupils had a truly wonderful time taking part in their Coronation Workshop, enjoying a variety of exciting craft activities. From designing their own mugs to making royal bunting, the room was buzzing with imagination and colour. Then they took part in a special role-play coronation, complete with robes, sceptres, and plenty of royal flair. The day ended with a joyful street party celebration, bringing everyone together with music, treats, and lots of laughter. It was a fantastic experience that helped bring history to life in the most memorable way!
The magnificent Panama Canal is an engineering marvel connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and cruising through it is an unforgettable experience, combining the natural wonders of the rainforest with one of the greatest man-made wonders of the world.
Work on this important maritime short-cut commenced in 1881, but following a troubled construction, the canal finally opened in 1914. Featuring three sets of locks, this 82km waterway takes between 8-10 hours to cross, and lifts ships an incredible 85 feet to Gatun Lake, one of the largest man-made freshwater lakes in the world, before rejoining ocean waters the other side of the country.
This is one destination that is by far best seen from a ship, and as such it features on many cruise itineraries departing from both the Atlantic and the Pacific coasts - these either encompass the whole canal, or dip into serene Gatun Lake before returning to the same ocean.
Departing from Pacific cities such as Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego, you can stop at vibrant coastal ports in Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Costa Rica before joining the Canal. From the Atlantic side, join your ship in New York, Fort Lauderdale, or Miami, then visit the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Curacao, Aruba or Cartagena in Columbia before arriving in Panama. Some cruise companies journey even further into the eastern waters of the Caribbean visiting Antigua, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados and St Lucia, for even more crystal waters and idyllic beaches.
A Panama Canal cruise can encompass lush rainforests, tropical birds, abundant wildlife, volcanic views, serene lakes, golden beaches, tropical islands, Caribbean flavours, charming ports and bustling markets - all underpinned by the colourful history and culture of the vibrant countries you visit.
Several cruise companies offer Panama Canal itineraries, so if you feel inspired to visit this wonder of the world, call or email me today, and let me make your Panama dreams come true.
