Discovering the Deepings issue 119, May 2025

Page 1

Welcome to your May issue...

Don’t you just know it’s school holiday time when a fortnight of dry, sunny weather is followed, at the start of the Easter holiday, by a deluge? Still, not to worry; Easter is just around the corner, as I write, and our Easter bunnies are predicting a dry spell for the massive amounts of chocolate eggs to be secreted in your gardens!

Advanced notice here of celebrations to come. Besides May 8th being celebrated as the eightieth anniversary of VE Day, Bourne will see a significant cause for the whole area to come together next month when the 75th anniversary of the founding of the BRM racing car will coincide with the town’s traditional Picnic in the Park on June 14th.

Finally, our “Discovering Magazines” family comprises five titles: Whittlesea, Bourne, March, Wisbech, and The Deepings. May 2025’s issue of “Discovering Whittlesea” is number 250 and we are particularly proud of such longevity and thank all our contributors, advertisers and readers of all five titles.

Last month, I queried whether we would still be singing, “We never lose at Wember-ley” at the end of the Vertu (EFL) Trophy Final. Well, it’s wonderful to report that the mighty Posh beat Birmingham City 2-0, thus keeping their record intact and retaining the EFL Trophy which they won last year. Anyone for a bet on “three in a row” for next season?

This month sees the eightieth anniversary of VE Day and an opportune moment to pause and consider just how valuable that victory in 1945 was, in heralding in so many decades of relatively peaceful stability for Britain in the world, besides offering thanks to the thousands who fought to make it happen.

And finally:

✦ Never eat a meal with a chess player: your food will be stone cold by the time they’ve passed you the salt.

✦ My mate’s dog chases after people on horseback – he’s even got his own saddle. Enjoy the read!

TRAVEL VACCINATIONS AND HEALTH ADVICE SERVICE

1 WHY MAY I NEED TO BE VACCINATED?

If you’re about to travel outside of the UK, you may need to be vaccinated before you set off for your trip. The childhood vaccination programme in the UK protects you from a number of diseases, but you may need extra vaccinations or antimalarials if you’re planning on visiting certain parts of the world.

2 HOW CAN WE HELP?

Getting vaccinated can help prevent you from getting ill if you’re exposed to diseases which we don’t normally have in the UK. We can help you understand how to keep your risks low while abroad and help you work out which vaccinations and antimalarials you may want to consider depending on things like:

• Which regions you’ll be visiting

• What activities you’ll be doing

• Your age and general health

Some travel vaccinations may be needed several weeks before departure. Ideally you should see us six to eight weeks before travelling, but we may still be able to help if you’re leaving sooner, even days before you travel.

3 WHAT VACCINATIONS ARE AVAILABLE?

● Cholera ● Hepatitis A ● Hepatitis B ● Japanese encephalitis

● Meningitis ACWY ● Rabies ● Tick-borne encephalitis

● Typhoid ● Yellow fever ● And many more

Are You One of the 67%?

Analysis consistently shows that 67% of people still don’t have a valid and up-to-date will in place. Yet everyone knows that it is something that they need to do. The difference between the right will and the wrong will could cost your family £140,000 in additional Inheritance Tax, but still some people do nothing!

We held some focus groups recently and the reasons for not getting around to writing a will were interesting –

● Some people thought that, if they died, their spouse or partner would get everything. Whilst this can be true, for most of us it is not.

● Some said that making a will could be tempting fate – I promise you that making a will has never been recorded as a cause of death!

● Others said they were put off by legal jargon and daunted by the stuffy image of traditional solicitors. Our most common feedback is that we make things easy and understandable.

● Some people said that having the ‘death conversation’ with the family was too hard. Over our twenty years, experience tells us that people who have been open with their family about their wishes ensure that the administration of their estate goes smoothly.

● Our more youthful participants said that that wills were for old people, and that they were too young. But every one of them knew a school friend who hadn’t made it.

● Then there were those who said they had nothing to give away so didn’t need one, yet they had young children who needed guardians appointed to ensure they were looked after. Most had life insurances or death-in-service benefits which meant that they were worth more dead than alive.

For those that had done their planning, the response was overwhelming – It gave them and their families peace of mind. Making a will isn’t glamorous, but it is essential for almost everybody.

With twenty years’ experience and nine qualified private client paralegals on our staff, W&P Legal is the obvious place to go when you finally get around to it. We have delivered peace of mind to over 14,000 families since 2005.

Call us on 01778 382723 or book an appointment via our online portal at www.wplegal.co.uk.

Make 2025 the year you move out of the 67% and deliver peace of mind to your family.

Components:

I Need a Will and/or Lasting Powers of Attorney But

Who Do I Trust?

Writing a will and having a Lasting Power of Attorney are two of those things in life you forget to do or perhaps do not want to think about. However, they are essential for your family and friends to look after you and your affairs, either on your death or if you become physically or mentally incapable. It is because we have an ageing population with people living much longer, that mental illness has become a reality. In fact, statistics indicate that one in three of us will have some kind of mental illness such as dementia, Alzheimer’s etc (very scary!)

You should instruct a qualified solicitor/professional to help you with these important matters. There are many organisations out there who offer this kind of service, even though they may have no legal qualifications. They use titles which lead people to assume that they are dealing with a legally qualified person, but they are salespeople who happen to be very good at selling!

Those who have legal qualifications/experience will understand that everyone’s situation is different and there is no standard document which “fits all”. You will therefore receive advice which is tailored to your personal circumstances and so, if you do not need something (e.g. trusts), then you will be advised accordingly.

If you go to a reputable firm who employs legally qualified personnel, they will:

1

Ensure you are not sold anything that you do not need.

2

Explain to you the pros and cons of what you are trying to achieve.

3Draft your paperwork correctly because they must undergo continuing professional development and keep up to date with the law.

4Have a legal obligation to be transparent about their charges.

5Not place themselves in a position of control such as encouraging you to appoint them as Executors/Trustees, unless it is necessary in your circumstances (e.g. if you have no children).

6

Most importantly, solicitors are heavily regulated and cannot practise unless they are fully insured. This gives you peace of mind that if mistakes are made, you have proper recourse to the Law Society and the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority (including the Legal Ombudsman).

Not having a will and/or Lasting Powers of Attorney can have a detrimental effect on families.

Overall, the message is that these are important matters and that you need to do your research and make sure you instruct reputable legal professionals who know what they are doing and who are regulated and properly insured.

Approaching Retirement?

Here’s

How to Stay Calm During Market Volatility

If you’re in your 50s or early 60s, you might be keeping a closer eye on your investments these days and with good reason.

Retirement is on the horizon and, with recent market ups and downs, it’s completely natural to feel a little uneasy. But before you make any sudden moves, take a breath. Market volatility is normal, and a long-term strategy still workseven this close to retirement.

Why Market Dips Feel Different Now

When you're younger, it’s easier to ride out market swings. But, as retirement draws near, every dip feels more personal; that’s understandable. However, history shows that downturns are nothing new, and they don’t last forever.

happen close together so, missing just a few can significantly reduce long-term returns.

What You Can Do: Stick with a Simple, Steady Strategy

Now, more than ever, a clear and consistent investment strategy matters. A passive, automated approach - one where you invest regularly and stay focused on the long term - can help you stay on track without getting caught up in the daily headlines.

After a 10% market drop, the average return in the following year is nearly 12%

In fact, after a 10% market drop, the average return in the following year is nearly 12%. While no one enjoys seeing their portfolio dip, these declines often set the stage for strong rebounds.

Avoid the Trap of Emotional Decision-Making

One of the biggest risks for investors - especially those close to retirement - is letting fear drive financial decisions. Pulling out of the market, or moving to cash, might feel safer, but it can mean missing out on crucial recovery gains.

The truth? Trying to time the market rarely works. The best and worst trading days often

Have you been refused a mortgage or equity release due to spray foam?

If you suspect you’ve been misled or had a poor-quality removal, act now! Contact us for a FREE survey and expert advice before it’s too late.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) states that spray foam may affect a property's valuation, particularly if applied incorrectly. Spray foam can reduce airflow in the roof, potentially leading to issues like mould, wood rot, and reduced structural stability.

❌ Foam left behind in eaves – Often hidden and hard to reach without proper access (scaffolding may have been necessary).

❌ Torn or damaged roofing felt – Careless removal can cause holes, leading to leaks and structural issues.

❌ Foil tacked to rafters – A common trick used to hide incomplete removal, preventing proper inspection.

Structural Damage – Undetected spray foam can weaken your roof over time. Devalued Property – Incomplete removal may leave your home unmortgageable Higher Costs – A second removal job can be expensive if not done right the first time.

Self-Employed?

Spring is often seen as a fresh start - and if you’re self-employed and thinking about buying a home, May is a great time to

With the tax year just behind us, many freelancers, sole traders, and small business owners now have their latest accounts ready, making this the perfect time to prepare for a mortgage application.

At Path Mortgages, we know that getting a mortgage when you’re self-employed can feel a little more complicated - but it doesn’t have to be. Here’s how you can get mortgage-ready this spring:

1Sort Out Your Paperwork

Mortgage lenders will usually want to see two years of accounts or tax returns (SA302s), your tax year overviews, and recent bank statements. If you’ve only got one full year of accounts, don’t panic—some lenders are open to this.

2 Tidy Up Your Personal Finances

Your personal credit score still matters. Make sure your bills are up to date, clear any old debts if possible, and avoid taking on new credit just before applying. Even if your business finances are healthy, your personal habits will be looked at closely.

3 Understand How You’re Paid

Do you draw a salary and dividends? Is your income seasonal? Your mortgage broker will help you present your finances clearly to lenders and find one that understands your specific setup.

4 Time to Start?

If you’re thinking about buying or remortgaging this year, now’s a great time to have a conversation. We’re based locally and love supporting other local businesses with honest, straightforward mortgage advice.

Ticket Fraud – Young People Being Targeted

If you are planning a summer of gigs and festivals, make sure your fun in the sun doesn’t hit a bum note! Ticket fraud is on the rise, and so far, this year, it has accounted for over a quarter of all scams suffered by 18 to 34-year-olds. The figures have been released by major bank Santandar UK, which has recorded a 6% increase (up at 27%) in this age group falling victim to scams. This was driven by criminals making fake offers of concert tickets.

Santander's ‘Scamtracker’ revealed that a total of £18.4 million was stolen from customers in the first quarter of 2025, highlighting the urgent need for awareness, especially regarding advance fee scams, which only 17% of people recognise. Here are some age breakdowns for the first quarter of 2025:

• 18 to 34-year-olds accounted for 27% of claims, with ticket purchases the most common scam.

• 35 to 50-year-olds accounted for 23% of claims, again with ticket scams the most common.

• For the 51 to 65-year-olds, the most common scams at 23 % was the purchase of vehicles.

• The most common scam in the 66 to 80 age bracket (18%) was impersonation fraud (criminals pretending to be organisations other than banks or the police, for example HMRC).

• When it came to the 80+ age group, this accounted for 4% cent of claims with the most common scam impersonation (criminals pretending to be from banks or the police).

If you think you may have compromised the safety of your bank details and/or have lost money, you should immediately contact your bank.

If you think you have been a victim of fraud or would like more details on how to report fraud, visit www.actionfraud.police.uk or call 0300 123 2040.

Welcome Gifts for ‘Stage-Struck’ School!

Market Deeping Community Primary School had a welcome surprise in March when GoPak, a wellknown school furniture supply company, in collaboration with local photographer, Martin Bird Photography, asked to use the school hall to photograph some of their products.

Several pupils got to be part of some amazing photographs over two days and the company were so grateful for the use of the hall, and appreciative of how accommodating the school staff and students were, that GoPak gifted the school an amazing brand-new stage for the hall, along with some beautiful furniture.

Head teacher, Mr Ratchford praised the company and photographer for their professionalism while they were in the school and is very grateful for the amazing gifts that will benefit the children for years to come.

Chicks in EYFS!

Children in Foundation Stage have loved the experience of watching ten eggs hatch into chicks! As part of Science lessons, the pupils have learnt about the life cycle of a hen. The chicks have had lots of cuddles, and we will miss them when they go back to the farm.

Magistrates Visit

Year 6 were recently visited by some magistrates. The children then held a court case in the classroom with pupils acting out relevant roles within the court process and crime scene. Pupils learnt about the Crown Prosecution Service, how it is decided which case is heard and relevant sentencing. They also discussed the consequences of a criminal record.

Travels in the Tollgate Era

Two main routes used to pass through Deeping, from London to Lincoln and from Spalding to Stamford. By the 1760s, horsedrawn traffic was increasing, and Turnpike Trusts were set up to maintain them to a good standard, relieving parishes of the expense. To finance the scheme, travellers were obliged to pay tolls at gates or turnpikes fixed across the roads.

Tollhouses were built on the south side of Market Deeping bridge and Deeping St James bridge, with another on Spalding Road near the junction with Stowgate Fen Road. There was also a tollhouse near Molecey’s Mill and one at Kates Bridge near Baston. Each displayed a board listing various tolls for different types of carriage or cart, horses and herds of animals. Wagons transporting vagrants, stones for road-mending or manure were exempt, as were people driving to church on Sundays, attending a funeral or an election. It was a complicated and unpopular system. Tollkeepers were employed to collect the money and unlock barriers to let traffic through, day and night. If a keeper was in bed, travellers had to shout “Gate!” or sound a horn to rouse him.

In 1841, two farmers tried to evade paying a toll of sixpence at Deeping St James by “unlawfully

passing over a private way” with their horses. They were taken to court and charged almost four pounds in expenses, but one man in the village found a legal loophole to avoid tolls. Benjamin Smith made heavy gloves for farm work, which he sold at Stamford market and instead of travelling in a horse-drawn vehicle, he used a light cart pulled by two dogs, as that was not chargeable. On the return journey he used to stop near Tallington to let his dogs drink from the canal. One day, he forgot but the dogs did not, and made a sharp turn towards the water, throwing him out of the cart. Accidents also happened when dog carriages caused horses to take fright at the sight of them.

Walking to market was another free option or, for a few pence, villagers could ride in a carrier’s wagon while he collected and delivered goods along the way. It was a slow jogtrot method of travelling and the journey from Stamford to Langtoft via Deeping took almost three hours, including stops.

As the railway network grew in the 1850s, long-distance travel by road declined and income from tolls fell. The tollgates at both bridges in Deeping were removed in 1860 and an Act of Parliament in November 1882 declared all turnpike roads toll-free. Tollhouses were sold off for private dwellings, and all those around Deeping were eventually knocked down.

Adriatic Escapes

with Cruise Specialist

Nigel Ramsden

The Adriatic Sea is a sparkling turquoise gem in the Eastern Mediterranean, nestled between the shores of Italy and the Balkan Peninsula. From Venice at its northernmost point, the coastline unfolds past Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania, leading down towards Greece, and cruising these calm waters can transport you to another world, full of ancient historical sites and stunning natural landscapes.

An Adriatic cruise is the perfect way to explore the treasures of this region, dating back to Ancient Greek and Roman Empires. Explore Italy’s most romantic city, Venice, and take a gondola tour through intricate canals and Byzantine

architecture. In Croatia visit the beautiful Old Towns of Split and Dubrovnik, cruising the famous Dalmatian Coast’s dramatic islands, rugged peninsulas and secluded golden bays, fringed with olive groves, vineyards, and pine-scented forests. In Montenegro discover Kotor, nestled in a bay flanked by majestic mountains, and explore its’ labyrinthine 12th century walled city. Sail further south to the Greek Islands – perhaps famous Santorini, with its iconic blue-and-white architecture, or tranquil Corfu with a blend of Venetian, French and British influences. The Adriatic’s sheltered waters are many shades of crystalline blue, from cobalt to turquoise, and perfect for a variety of water sports, snorkelling and swimming - the beaches are amongst the cleanest of Europe, as well as the most beautiful.

On an Adriatic cruise, shore excursions immerse you in

the local history and culture and showcase the beautiful scenery and waters. Enjoy delicious onboard cuisine and regional wines, freshly sourced and inspired by each destination, and at the end of each glorious day raise a glass to the magnificent sunsets over the Adriatic Sea… truly breathtaking!

Several cruise operators offer Adriatic cruises, so if you feel inspired to visit this gorgeous region, call or email me today - let me help make your Adriatic dreams come true.
