Discovering the Deepings issue 118, April 2025

Page 1

Welcome to your April issue...

Every year I am so surprised at just how quickly, within a few weeks, we’ve moved on from those cold, dark mornings and all those high winds and storms. Blossom is now on show and summer is nearly upon us. Global warming? Ok, well just a little bit then!

I hope you find the wide range of topics included in this month’s magazine both informative and enjoyable. As ever, many thanks to all our contributors and advertisers for their hard work and for your continuing support and words of encouragement.

Good luck to our colleague, Sarah Brooks and all the other fabulous fund-raisers whose last few months of ‘training hell’ will have helped make it a ‘heavenly’ outcome on Sunday April 27th, as they tackle the formidable London Marathon!

Enjoy the Easter break and all those chocolate treats, and best wishes for a happy and healthy month.

Claire x

First, many congratulations and yet commiserations too, to our local heroes, Bourne Town FC. Just two games from a trip to Wembley for the final of the FA Vase, they met their match, narrowly losing 1-0 to Surrey side, AFC Whyteleafe. However, there is still an opportunity to visit Wembley for us locals. At around 5pm on April 13th, I wonder whether we’ll still be singing, “We never lose at Wemb erley” as the final of the Vertu Trophy sees the mighty Posh facing the also ‘quite mighty’ Birmingham City!

And finally:

✦ How about the Birmingham footballer caught cheating in the limbo contest – just how low can you get?

✦ He saw a wig for sale, 75% off, and said, “That’s a small price toupee!"

Enjoy the read.

TRAVEL VACCINATIONS AND HEALTH ADVICE SERVICE

1 WHY MAY I NEED TO BE VACCINATED?

If you’re about to travel outside of the UK, you may need to be vaccinated before you set off for your trip. The childhood vaccination programme in the UK protects you from a number of diseases, but you may need extra vaccinations or antimalarials if you’re planning on visiting certain parts of the world.

2 HOW CAN WE HELP?

Getting vaccinated can help prevent you from getting ill if you’re exposed to diseases which we don’t normally have in the UK. We can help you understand how to keep your risks low while abroad and help you work out which vaccinations and antimalarials you may want to consider depending on things like:

• Which regions you’ll be visiting

• What activities you’ll be doing

• Your age and general health

Some travel vaccinations may be needed several weeks before departure. Ideally you should see us six to eight weeks before travelling, but we may still be able to help if you’re leaving sooner, even days before you travel.

3 WHAT VACCINATIONS ARE AVAILABLE?

● Cholera ● Hepatitis A ● Hepatitis B ● Japanese encephalitis

● Meningitis ACWY ● Rabies ● Tick-borne encephalitis

● Typhoid ● Yellow fever ● And many more

Education, Education, Education

Here at W & P Legal we have always had a real commitment to educating our staff and (this one might come as a surprise) our clients. I guess the bit about educating the staff might seem obvious; we need to know what we are doing, right? But you would be amazed at how many law firms have advisors and admin staff who have no formal legal qualifications. Sure, the solicitors have taken the exams and must do a certain amount of revision each year (called Continuing Professional Development or CPD), but for most of their staff, there is no such requirement.

We are different. Everyone who works in our client-facing teams has an appropriate

qualification; when you call one of our advisors or case handlers, you will be speaking to a qualified paralegal, a solicitor or a specialist trust and estates practitioner. Everyone who works with me is required to do at least twenty-five hours CPD per year (I did over 125 last year alone). So, you can be confident that you can rely on us.

The second part is more interesting. Why would we seek to educate our clients? Put simply, it is so that you can make the right choices. Are we the right firm for you? Do we provide the solutions you are looking for? Are we too cheap, or too expensive? Can you trust us?

If you are not sure, then we need to give you the information to make your decisions. That’s why I have been writing this column every month for over fifteen years (and some of you have been reading it!) That is why, when someone asks us a price, we give a straight answer. We never say, “Plus VAT”, as that is hiding a 20% price hike.

Our ‘North Star’, our ‘raison d’etre’, is to deliver peace of mind to everyone we interact with as a business. This means if you ask us a question, we will give you a straight answer. If you ask us to do something that can’t be done, we will tell you. If you seek our advice, we will give you an honest opinion. Because, only when you have all the information that you need, you can make the decision that is right for you, your family and your future.

If you want to find out more, please give us a call 01778 252301 or book a consultation via our website www.wplegal.co.uk.

Deeping St James visit the Peterborough Drama Festival

Agroup of children from Years 5 and 6 attended the annual Peterborough Drama Festival once again this March. The children took part in the Choral Speaking competition, performing the poem, “The Ghostly Visitor” by Roger Stevens.

The choir achieved a ‘Commended’ grade this

year, with their feedback from judges commenting that: ‘You made an atmospheric entrance into the space, and you set the mood very well.’ As well as their ‘solo voices being very confident’.

Deeping St James visit a Hindu Temple

Students from DSJ recently visited the Bharat Samaj Hindu Temple in Peterborough, where they had the opportunity to learn about Hindu culture, traditions, and practices in a hands-on and engaging way. A highlight of the visit was observing a traditional Hindu prayer ceremony, complete with chanting, bellringing, and the lighting of incense and lamps.

The peaceful and spiritual atmosphere left a lasting impression on the students, many of whom commented on how special and calming the

experience felt. The trip was part of the school’s commitment to promoting cultural awareness and understanding. We emphasised the importance of helping children appreciate the rich diversity of faiths and traditions within their local community.

The school expressed gratitude to the Bharat Samaj Temple for their hospitality and the insightful presentations. The visit to the Bharat Samaj Temple will undoubtedly remain a memorable and inspiring moment for all who attended. Langtoft Primary School Strikes Gold!

Years 1 and 2 had a fantastic day finding out about different capital cities around the world. They danced Flamenco in Madrid, went to a carnival in Brazil and drank milkshakes in Washington DC. The children looked amazing dressed up in clothes inspired by the countries.

To kick start their history topics this term, Years 3 and 4 had “real archaeologists” in to share their findings within the local area - West Deeping. They looked at a variety of artefacts including animal skulls of native British animals that no longer live in the area! It was an inspiring workshop and was great to see the children engaged in the role of an archaeologist!

Thank you to our amazing PTA for buying us an oven for our new cooking area. The children really enjoy researching recipes and cooking a range of dishes.

Market Deeping Community Primary School organised and hosted a boys’ and girls’ football tournament for schools in The Deepings area.

With twelve teams (five girls’ and seven boys’) competing and young leaders from Bourne Grammar School officiating, it was an exciting festival of sport. The overall winners in the girls’ tournament were Baston CE Primary School, whilst Market Deeping Community Primary won the boys’ tournament.

Headteacher, Mark Ratchford said, ‘It was a wonderful day of sport and a real pleasure to host so many teams. It was brilliant to welcome pupils from Bourne Grammar School and good for our pupils to find out about secondary education.”

IRethinking Financial Planning

n this month’s edition, I’m exploring financial planning and how it differs from traditional financial advice. In my opinion, the approach of traditional financial advisers has given our profession a bit of a bad rap…

+ Only accessible by the wealthy

+ Focused on selling products

+ An expensive and opaque service

Throughout my career, I’ve worked for traditional financial advice firms as well as, most recently, co-founding my own financial planning business, Finova Money Ltd.

But what is it?

In its simplest form, proper financial planning can be described as…

“Planning ahead, so that you have enough money to live your desired lifestyle forever, without the fear of your money running out.”

It’s about tailoring a financial roadmap for you and your family, so that you know you’re on track to achieve the things that are most important to you.

Whilst a financial planner does all the things a financial adviser can do, the financial planner goes one step further by helping clients answer big questions like…

+ Am I going to be okay?

+ When can work become a choice?

+ Can we afford to do the things we love?

Who is it for?

Unlike financial advice firms who may have big barriers to entry (£500,000 minimum investment, for example), proper financial planning is much more accessible.

It's for anyone seeking financial stability, whether you’re just starting out and need guidance with budgeting and saving, or whether you’re a seasoned professional, planning for life after work. As such, the level of service you require should be determined by your unique circumstances, not by how much wealth you have accumulated or ‘assets under management’.

How can it help you?

Building a roadmap which shows you where you are today and how to get to where you want to be will give you complete clarity over your financial future.

I’m happy to say that proper financial planning is on the rise and becoming more accessible.

This may involve…

+ Getting organised and tidying up your existing plans

+ Agreeing a bespoke savings plan to fill any gaps

+ Ensuring your plan is well-protected if anything happens to you

Armed with this information, you’ll feel confident about your future, knowing you have a robust plan in place to support it.

What next?

If any of the above sounds of interest, I’d be delighted to offer a free initial, 30-minute call to see how I may be able to help – just scan the QR code below. See you next month!

Consumer Advice

Don’t be Fooled by the Scammers This April

Dry Carpet Cleaning

April is often associated with pranks and playful tricks, but the issue of scammers is no laughing matter. This month, we are highlighting some of the most recent scams reported to Which? that have been deceiving customers in recent weeks.

BP impersonation email

An email purporting to be from BP invites recipients to ‘answer and win’ a complimentary ‘car emergency kit.’ However, this email directs users to a phishing site featuring a brief survey aimed at capturing personal and financial details.

M&S afternoon tea hamper

A fraudulent email posing as Marks and Spencer claims that you have been selected to receive a Marks and Spencer Afternoon Tea Letterbox Hamper. To claim this prize, you are urged to click on a suspicious link and fill out a survey. This link directs you to a site designed to capture your personal and financial details.

Holiday scams

To safeguard against holiday scams:

1 Avoid deals which sound too good to be true.

2 To ensure the travel company is legitimate, verify their affiliation with travel protection agencies by checking the websites of ATOL, ABTA, and ABTOT if their logos are displayed.

3 Check the holiday company’s reviews on various platforms.

4 Using a credit card or PayPal for payment offers greater protection in case of any issues.

Car tax payment scam

A fraudulent email posing as the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) informs recipients that their recent vehicle tax payment was unsuccessful due to inaccurate information. The message includes a link for updating these details, warning that failure to do so could result in a fine of up to £1000 and the possibility of their information being forwarded to a debt collection agency. Clicking on this link directs users to a harmful phishing site designed to capture personal and financial data.

Report scams

• If you wish to report a scam email, you can do so by forwarding it to report@phishing.gov.uk

• You can report scam websites to www.ncsc.gov.uk/ collection/phishing-scams/report-scam-website

• To report scam calls on an iPhone, send a text with the word ‘call’ and the phone number to 7726. For Android users, simply text ‘call’ to the same number. You will receive a reply message requesting the scam number.

Deeping’s Department Store

The 1905 view of High Street near its junction with Godsey Lane is barely recognisable today, as the only building which still survives is shown in the centre, surrounded by trees, and which now houses the Community Library.

A solicitor’s office next-door was replaced by the Police Station, and the entrance to Godsey Lane was widened when the row of thatched cottages was demolished. They were replaced by a terrace of villas, now converted into a coffee shop and ‘Riverside Beads’. It was on the opposite side of High Street, near the present roundabout, that W P Smith’s department store developed during the 1940s.

to power their radios. Charging a few pence each, he would top up their batteries regularly and was soon able to add a small shop to the side of his house for the sale of radios and cycles.

Walter Smith began trading in the white building on the right of the 1905 photograph, next to a lane leading down to the river. In the 1820s, it had been a public house named The Welland Cottage, and afterwards was the home of a basketmaker who wove locally grown willows. From 1900, Mr Smith’s grandfather and then his uncle ran a coal delivery business from the premises. When Walter moved in around 1930, he initially operated a battery re-charging service from his front room. Many people in Deeping had no mains electricity and needed batteries or accumulators

His business grew and, by the 1940s, Mr Smith was trading from a much larger, single-storey shop stretching along High Street, which he named the ‘Unique Shopping Centre’. As well as electrical items, it stocked furniture, hardware, clothes, prams and toys. In 1958, he claimed to be selling “the most comprehensive range of goods under one roof in the Eastern counties”. It was a remarkable emporium for a small village and benefitted from the expanding market for televisions and household appliances at that time. With his mobile shop and delivery vans, goods were supplied to a wide area, and he provided a repair service for the notoriously unreliable TV sets of that era!

The former Welland Cottage was then demolished, together with the original shop premises made of wood, and replaced by a brick-built store that still exists today. After Walter Smith’s death in 1970, the business continued to flourish and celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 1981.

Over the following decade, changing shopping habits made trading in Deeping less profitable, but it was a shock to the community when the Shopping Centre suddenly closed in 1990. The premises are now occupied by another “unique” enterprise – Market Deeping Antiques and Craft Centre.

James Cash in the Boys 15 Yrs age group, managed a fabulous 4 Gold Medals, 3 Silver and a Bronze. Other multi-medal winners included Aoife Hickey in the Girls 10/11 age group; Evie Davies (Girls 10/11); Lottie Jenkinson (Girls 15 Yrs); Noah Skinner (Boys 14 Yrs) and Jacob Briers (Boys 17 Yrs).

Discover Norway

with Cruise Specialist

Widely recognised as one of the most beautiful places to visit on earth, the coast of Norway is fringed with spectacular fjords that pierce the coastline and entice you ashore to discover vertiginous mountains and green pastural valleys. Picture perfect villages hug the water’s edges, and with its cultural history and the vibrant city scenes of Bergen, Oslo and Tromsø, Norway really does have it all. If you’ve never cruised before, Norway can be the perfect introduction, with itineraries from just 5 nights, that combine a couple of sea days with a variety of stops along that gorgeous coastline. For the more experienced sailor, longer trips offer more immersive explorations, right to the heart of the country.

Carved by glaciers over thousands of years, Norway’s striking scenery has something to offer all year round. Summer offers a wealth of outdoor pursuits such as kayaking, wildlife watching and hiking. The winter is the time to seek out the Northern Lights, as well as enjoying fantastic winter sports such as skiing, snowmobiling and dog sledding. Spring sees the country emerge from its wintry shroud, as glacial meltwaters flow as spectacular waterfalls, filling turquoise lakes, and in both spring and autumn many of the outdoor attractions will be available, but without the summer crowds, so this can be an ideal time to visit.

Cruising is the perfect way to experience the highlights of Norway and choosing an operator with smaller ships, that can get deep into the fjords, will offer a
