Discovering Bourne issue 172, December 2025

Page 1

Welcome to your December issue...

Avery warm welcome to this, our last issue of 2025. As a new year draws closer, it’s time to look back and reflect on this year, in which so much has happened locally and further afield. For some of us, some loved ones are no longer around, but for many, new arrivals and relationships have made the future look brighter than ever.

Huge thanks go to everyone who has helped us at Discovering Magazines in any way this year. This refers to our advertisers and contributors, (with their regular features, wonderful advice, and suggestions) and, of course, our dedicated sales and editorial colleagues who this year have shown such amazing support for each other. But it is you, our readers, who make everything worthwhile for us, so many thanks to you all. Best wishes for Christmas and for 2026 – good luck, but most importantly, good health!

Claire x

Quote of the year must go to the golfer who recently shot a 13-over-par round and explained, “I thought I hit a lot of great shots out there. I hit a lot of good shots … just to the wrong spots.” These are the words of Kai Trump, the granddaughter of a certain US President!

Congratulations to England’s Men on reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the England Men’s Rugby going unbeaten in ten games. Now, we hold our breath over the next seven weeks, as our cricketers aim to make it a hat-trick by bringing home The Ashes! And finally:

• When I complained that the barista had served me the wrong coffee, twenty minutes late, he just smirked, “Better latte than never!”

• Next year’s Fibonacci Convention is going to be really special - it’s as big as the last two put together. Enjoy the read … and a fun-filled Christmas too!

Exit Strategy

Jack Reacher will make three stops today. Not all of them were planned for.

First – a Baltimore coffee shop. As he leaves, someone brushes against him in the doorway. Reacher checks the pocket holding his cash and passport. Nothing is missing.

Second – a store to buy a coat. As he pulls out his cash, he finds something new in his pocket. A handwritten note. A desperate plea for help.

Third – impressed by the guy’s technique and intrigued by the message, Reacher makes it his mission to find out more...

We Did OK, Kid

Born and raised in Port Talbot amid war and depression, Sir Anthony Hopkins grew up around men who favoured alcoholism and brutality. A was deemed a failure with no future. But watching the 1948 adaptation of “Hamlet” sparked a passion for acting that would lead him on a path that no one could have predicted.

His performance as Iago got him into RADA under the wing of Laurence Olivier. His iconic portrayal of Hannibal Lecter was informed by the creepy performance of Bela Lugosi in “Dracula” and the razor-sharp precision of his acting teacher.

In his personal life, his addiction cost him his first marriage, his relationship with his only child, and nearly his life – the latter ultimately propelling him toward sobriety, a commitment he has maintained for nearly half a century.

Nubourne W.I. Requires New Members to Prevent Closure

This year, Nubourne Women’s Institute celebrated its fifty-third anniversary. However, if new members are not found, this may be its last year, as the current members and committee are struggling to keep going.

The group meets on the first Thursday of each month at 2pm. Each month sees a different

speaker with topics ranging from history to wildlife, from crafts to health issues. We are a friendly bunch who now need some new blood to help with committee matters. So, if you are recently retired or working part-time and are free in the afternoons and would like to develop a new set of friends, please come along to our

meeting or phone Sarah on 07760 468052 for more details.

Our next meeting is on Thursday December 4th at Bourne Abbey Church Hall at 2pm, where we will be making Christmas decorations out of a book. Visitors are asked to contribute £5 and there will be refreshments and a raffle.

Learning Beyond the Classroom C

hildren thrive when they experience learning in realworld contexts, and we are committed to providing opportunities that broaden horizons, spark curiosity, and build confidence.

One of the ways we achieve this is by regularly taking our pupils into the local community. We are incredibly fortunate to have Grimsthorpe Castle so close, and visits allow children to connect with history, nature, and culture in a way that textbooks simply cannot replicate.

Our commitment to experiences beyond the classroom extends to sport and teamwork. Recently, our school football team competed in a local tournament, and what truly stood out was their sportsmanship and perseverance, qualities just as important as any trophy, and which reflect the values we strive to instil in every pupil at Edenham.

We are always looking for new ways to enrich learning. Whether it’s through outdoor education, cultural visits, sporting events, or creative

workshops, we want every child to experience the joy of learning beyond the classroom so, if you or your organisation can support us in providing these opportunities—perhaps by offering a visit, sharing expertise, or partnering with us, we would love to hear from you.

Please contact us at 01778 591207 or email enquiries@edenham.laat.co.uk. Let’s work together to make learning an adventure for every child at Edenham C of E Primary School.

Clinic Care for all your Foot Health Needs

Foot Bliss Bourne is a predominantly clinic-based foot care service, although home visits are available within Bourne and the surrounding villages.

Nicola London understands the pressure we put on our feet and the damage that everyday wear and tear can have on our overall foot health, from her long experience as a runner. Foot care is for everyone, young and old. It is important to maintain good foot health at an early age to avoid complications later in life.

Good foot health involves you looking out for: any changes to your feet, both physical changes and pain; cracked, dry skin; sore ingrown toenails; and thickened and discoloured nails, which could indicate a fungal condition. Diabetics should take extra care, as any changes could be an early indication that there is an underlying issue.

From her welcoming, relaxing clinic, based in Burchnell Gardens in Bourne, Nicola’s treatments include fungal nails, thickened nails, verrucae, ingrown toenails, general foot health and nail trimming, diabetic foot health assessments, neuropathy testing, corn removal, and callus reduction.

All Nicola asks is that “You bring only yourself and your medical history to the clinic; I do the rest while you sit back and relax and enjoy a complimentary foot massage at the end of your treatment. Many clients comment that they leave feeling they are walking on air!” There is currently capacity for new clients and Nicola is happy to discuss any foot health concerns that you may have.

Services Offered:

Callus removal

Corn removal

Thickened toe nail reduction

Fungal nail treatment

Verruca treatment

Stress-free Christmas

Christmas is meant to be a time of togetherness with family, fun, joy and selfless thought towards others. However, Christmas can often just seem like another one of life’s major stresses.

What makes Christmas stressful?

First, there’s the preparation, the shopping in frenzied, crowded stores, people pushing and shoving and you worrying whether so and so will like the present you’ve bought them. Then there’s the cooking and organizing and, of course, the financial strain that the extra cost of Christmas entails. Many of us get seriously in debt (or more in debt) after the Christmas holiday. But the biggest stress of Christmas comes from the very essence of what Christmas is supposed to be all about … thinking of other people and togetherness.

“It’s the expectations of having a ‘perfect Christmas’ that drive this stress”

Pressure can come from other angles too, such as trying to stick to that healthy eating regime, social anxiety, and keeping phobias, depression and anger at bay. Alcohol isn’t helpful either, destroying the happy chemical in our brain leaving us more susceptible to stress, anxiety, anger and depression.

What is stress?

Stress is a feeling we get when we feel under too

much pressure, whether that comes from outside sources or from ourselves. A small amount of stress can be useful as it prompts us into action. However, when it builds up it can lead to physical and psychological problems including anxiety, panic attacks, high blood pressure, insomnia, headaches and even depression. We can become stressed by anything that seems to exceed our ability to cope and causes stress hormone levels to rise in our bloodstream.

Hypnotherapy for stress

Hypnotherapy will relax you deeply and prepare your mind to feel calm about the prospect of Christmas. You’ll find yourself feeling more relaxed during the holiday season and enjoying Christmas.

Hypnotherapy for stress management can help you gain a completely different perspective on life, not just for the holidays. Clinical hypnotherapy helps assess the issues and identify their root, whether it is a situation, a physical issue, a past experience or a relationship. Working collaboratively, the therapist and client will set goals and challenge unhelpful thinking patterns and create routines for healthy stress management, helping create a happy and positive mind.

“Transform a stressful Christmas into a relaxed one”

Local History Christmas Past

Christmas as we know it has been a developing festival since Pagan times, speeded on at the end of the nineteenth century by the Victorians and Charles Dickens.

Saturnalia was a festival celebrated by the Romans running for several days in early to mid-December to honour their god of agriculture, Saturn. It consisted of raucous parties, where servants and slaves were allowed to take control, being waited on by their masters. It was the forerunner to the Tudor Period, ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’, and the appointment, by lot, of a Lord of Misrule, whose task was to organize and direct the feasting, plays and other entertainments.

It wasn’t just the Romans who celebrated in December. The Winter Solstice Festival, taking place on the Shortest Day (generally around December 21st in the Northern Hemisphere), was an event in every calendar for a society tied to the land and the changing seasons. It was a time when the sun started to re-emerge and the land awaken. Norse and Germanic peoples held a Yule Festival which can be traced back to the Stone Age, with feasting and celebrations and the burning of a large log over many days.

Fast forward to more recent times, and in 1841

Prince Albert decorated the

trees at Windsor Castle and started a trend. By giving trees to hospitals, schools and public buildings, the tradition quickly spread. Charles Dickens immortalised the spirit of Christmas in his book, “A Christmas Carol”, describing it as "a good time: a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of other people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys".

When you have trees, you have lights. The first Christmas illuminations were switched on in Bourne as a trial in 1967 with a ceremony outside the Town Hall and they remained on between dusk and midnight every evening until New Year's Day. It was only the Market Place [now the town centre] and part of North Street that were lit up with little more than strings of fairy lights.

However you choose to celebrate Christmas 2025 … ENJOY!

Some traditions are a bit more local. Spot the interloper at the Red Lion Pub in Aslackby (now demolished) enjoying his Christmas morning tipple in 1950.
In 2001, £40,000 was spent on new lights, though the all-white illuminations were not considered sufficiently seasonal and coloured motifs were added the following year. Rex Needle Archive

Christmas Warmers

“This year has gone by far too quickly,” so says everyone, at least of a certain age!

So, with Christmas in mind, we must:

1Take care who we do business with online.

2

Be aware of “satisfactory quality” and “fitness for the purpose” under the Consumer Rights Act and “reasonable service” under a “reasonable time” under the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982.

3

Make sure any electrical and other items are genuine and not a cause for concern. If a bargain is too good to be true, it is probably false.

4

Support local businesses whenever we can – just think of the effort all businesses put in and those services lost to the community in recent years.

5

6Check your vehicles are safe to drive under the Road Traffic Act. Ensure sufficient water is there for our screen wash and wipers.

7Watch out for our furry friends on the roads who do not know the Highway Code … stunningly so!

8Check on any vulnerable neighbours.

9Take all reasonable steps to remain warm and well, yourselves.

10 Do not advertise on social media when you are away from your home which causes risks for its security.

Be mindful of alcohol and its effects, especially on driving and medication. One lady once got into difficulty with sherry in her trifle (a real case in the ‘bible’ of Road Traffic cases). Remember, even if you are ‘merry’ in your garden and holding your car keys, you could be guilty of the offence of “Being in charge of a vehicle whilst under the influence”. Leave the keys inside, unless of course you are Santa - not sure how he does it!

So, have a lovely build-up to the special season from Double and Megson.

It’s a good idea to think about those crops that did not like the drought conditions of 2025 and maybe what you could grow in their place. Here are a few suggestions of crops that require minimal but consistent watering and can withstand droughts:

• Carrots, beetroot, parsnips and other root crops are relatively drought tolerant.

• Chicories, endives and chards are likely to require less water than lettuces or spinach.

• Fennel, garlic, kale, sweet potatoes, courgettes.

Some gardeners put their allotment or vegetable patch “to bed” for the winter by covering the ground in plastic sheeting or weed suppressant to keep weeds at bay: it also keeps the ground a little warmer for early spring planting and prevents heavy rain from washing away the soil’s nutrients.

Weather permitting, there are plenty of other jobs to do this month:

• Continue topping up compost and leaf mould bins making sure that you burn or discard any plant material that looks diseased.

• You can still plant garlic if the soil is not frozen.

• Earth up Brussels sprouts stems to keep them secure from strong winds and remove any brown or yellow leaves, to prevent the spread of grey mould and downy mildew.

• Make sure your winter brassicas are netted to prevent pigeons eating them and check for, and repair any holes.

• It’s not too late to lift and divide large clumps of rhubarb, replanting the outer sections into soil enriched with well-rotted manure.

• If the ground is not frozen, you can still plant bare root fruit trees and bushes

• December is the ideal time to prune apples and pears, gooseberries and currants. Autumn raspberries can be pruned right back to ground level between now and February.

• Spray fruit trees and bushes with a winter wash to help control pests – any overwintering eggs should be destroyed.

• Replace any worn ties, stakes and wires on your fruit trees and bushes. Tighten any that are too loose and make sure that others are not too tight.

• Clean tools, seed trays, pots and other equipment as it will help prevent any diseases carrying over to infect next year’s seedlings. Also give the shed a good tidy out and clean.

• Hopefully, you will have plenty of crops to store through the winter and it is important that they are stored correctly. Cabbages can be hung in net bags; potatoes in thick paper sacks; carrots and parsnips between slightly moist layers of sand (making sure they are not touching) and, provided pumpkins and squashes have been properly cured, they should keep well if ventilated well and laid on straw or shredded paper.

I hope you had a succe ful and very rewarding 2025 and here’s to a productive and fruitful 2026. Ha y Christmas!

With the excitement of festive shopping comes a warning, as TSB has reported an 11%, year-on-year, increase in purchase fraud cases between January and September 2025. Consumers are advised to remain vigilant as purchase fraud incidents rise during the seasonal shopping period.

Many purchase scams originate on social media platforms, where fraudsters advertise counterfeit listings for sought-after or limited-availability products, such as concert and football tickets, trainers, children’s toys, home repairs, gaming consoles and other technology. Platforms such as Facebook Marketplace are particularly notable for attracting both buyers and sellers.

How to help make this time merry and not miserable:

• Choose your payment method wisely. Paying by credit card can give you protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act if something goes wrong with the purchase, meaning the credit card company can potentially be held liable if there is a problem. Section 75 may apply if the goods or services cost more than £100 and up to £30,000.

• Avoid rushed transactions, and meet sellers in person if possible. Use debit or credit cards, not a bank transfer.

• Good reviews don’t guarantee legitimacy, so always prioritise secure payment methods. Scammers often target hot or rare items at seemingly unbeatable prices. Do your research and check seller reviews and profiles carefully.

• It's better to spend a little more with a trusted seller than risk your money. If considering an unfamiliar site, check Trustpilot for consumer reviews.

• Try to stick to trusted websites and platforms with secure payment options.

Reporting a scam on Facebook Marketplace

• Report the listing. Find the Marketplace listing you want to report and follow the onscreen instruction.

• Report the user. Go to the Facebook profile of the user you want to report. Click on the “…” or ‘More Options’ link, usually under their cover photo. Select “Find support or report” and follow the on-screen instructions.

• Record all conversations. Before reporting a user or scam, make sure to save or screenshot any suspicious conversations or transactions.

• Submit feedback to Facebook. If you experience a scam or see a potential loophole that might be exploited by fraudsters, it’s always a good idea to provide feedback to Facebook.

• Check out Facebook’s official guidelines for staying safe while using Facebook Marketplace, so you can avoid scams.

Wishing you a safe and peaceful Christmas.

Words from the Mayor

Councillor

A final reflection on my “Sunrise to Sunset Charity Walk” on September 21st . Who would have thought that going for “nothing more than a mere stroll “ through the Lincolnshire countryside would generate over £6,000? Absolutely incredible and thank you all, once more. I am truly overwhelmed and grateful.

On Remembrance Sunday, I had the absolute honour of laying a poppy wreath on behalf of the Town Council. The parade and service at the Cenotaph on the Memorial Gardens was one of the largest attended events to date. Thank you to all involved: the Royal British Legion, Father Steven Buckman, Community Response Lincolnshire, National Roadphone and all the volunteers.

Leading up to this, I had the pleasure of spending time supporting the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal in Sainsbury’s. It was wonderful to chat with D.Day veteran, Mr Les Budding (a very sprightly centenarian), along with Philip Collins whose father Les helped troops onto Sword Beach as part of the D.Day landing offensive. Thank you to Store Manager, Poppy Hudson for joining in and showing support.

Fiona and I also had a great time at the “Bourne Fireworks Spectacular” on the Wellhead. We were very kindly invited along by Simon Chalkley from the Bourne and District Round Table to formally open the event. Compere for the evening, Norman Brown kept us all in good order and about 3,500 people enjoyed two incredible displays. Thank you to Bourne United Charities for allowing the use of the Wellhead fields. Thanks also to the Round Table and Bourne Abbey

Primary Academy PTFA for putting on such a superb event, along with all the helpers, volunteers, and Illuminatus Pyrotechnics.

During ‘National Meals on Wheels Week’, I was delighted to join Butterfield Centre Manager, Clare Kilday, on her Friday lunchtime round. In a thoroughly enjoyable, eye-opening couple of hours, we delivered to fifteen clients, all welcoming us with a smile and a handshake. Thank you to all the volunteers who unselfishly give their time to support this amazing service.

Finally, Fiona and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas along with a happy and prosperous New Year.

Merry Christmas from W & P Legal... and a thought for the Turkey Coma

As the festive season rolls around once again, all of us at W & P Legal want to wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year.

We hope your holidays are filled with laughter, good company, and copious amounts of mince pies. It’s that wonderful time of year when the pace of life slows down a little, the to-do lists go on pause, and even the most determined workaholic finds themself horizontal in front of the King’s Speech with a tin of chocolates in hand.

But while you’re enjoying that well-earned rest, here’s a gentle suggestion (and we promise it’s a friendly one!). The Christmas and New Year break can actually be the perfect time to have those important family conversations that so often get postponed, like sorting out your will, setting up a Power of Attorney, or making sure your estate planning reflects your current wishes.

Between the leftovers, the board games, and the mild chaos of visiting relatives, it’s often the time for when the whole family is together and that’s exactly when it’s easiest to talk about the future, openly and positively. After all, it’s not a gloomy topic when it’s about giving everyone peace of mind and clarity. Think of it as tying a bow on your affairs as neatly as the one on that suspiciously re-wrapped gift from last year!

So, while we certainly don’t recommend opening your will after the crackers have been pulled, a quiet chat over a glass of something festive might just be one of the most thoughtful things you do this Christmas.

From all of us at W & P Legal, thank you for your continued trust and support throughout the year.

We wish you a restful break, a joyful start to 2026, and, most importantly, no arguments over Monopoly... It’s only a game!

Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

Bewitching Tricks and Spooky Treats at Local Care Home

Barchester’s Wood Grange Care Home, in Bourne, was a den of ghoulish activity as the home’s spooky Hallowe’en Day got into full swing. Residents and staff entered into the spirit of things by decorating the home, holding a pumpkin bowls, and hosting a themed Hallowe’en bingo with ghoulish treats.

General Manager, Katya cackled: “Our staff and residents love any excuse for more fun. The home looks fantastically decorated and all the Hallowe’en activities were great!”

Rosemary, resident at Wood Grange said: “It has been such a fun day. It was great to see everyone go to so much effort to get into the Hallowe’en spirit. I really enjoyed the pumpkin carving bowls.”

Wood Grange’s varied life enrichment programme keeps residents active, and provides a daily choice

Staff and residents from Barchester’s Wood Grange Care Home joined fellow keen quizzers from over 260 Barchester care homes and hospitals across the whole of the UK, to put their collective general knowledge to the test. The “Barchester Big Quiz” took place on October 29th. From historical humdingers and geographical gazumpers to pictorial puzzlers and connective conundrums, the homes battled it out to find out who would prevail.

General Manager, Katya said:

“We’ve got some excellent quizzers at our home, and we are very competitive. We did very well, got a good score, and we can’t wait to see how well we did in comparison with all the other homes.”

The Cedars Residents Remember the Fallen with a Poppy Cascade

The Cedars Care Home in Bourne have chosen to commemorate the signing of the Armistice Day agreement on the day that the guns finally fell silent with a giant handmade poppy cascade.

Starting back in March, staff, residents, friends and volunteers have been knitting and crocheting a huge number of poppies to display at the home. The poppies cascade from the upper windows, winding down the pillars before crossing the path to the walkway. It was a major project that everyone was happy to be a part of- and if you wish to make a guess as to the number of poppies made you could even win a prize!

The project was the brain-child of activities assistant Lisa Ferris, who said ‘it’s such a poignant time of the year and so many expressed how much their involvement in this project meant to them and their families. It’s so important to remember and commemorate, especially with our residents; who lived through the war and were directly impacted’.

Relative ambassador Paula Finch said ‘the home always support Remembrance Day with such passion as many of the residents recall their lives entwined with those who served across all our forces. It is an amazing display’.

Rebecca Aldred, Senior General Manager at The Cedars Care Home added: ‘We have many residents with personal ties to the military and many who have experienced conflict either at home or abroad so it was important to us to mark November 11th and honour

the contribution of everyone involved in the World Wars and in subsequent conflicts’.

The Cedars Care Home is run by Barchester Healthcare, one of the UK’s largest care providers, which is committed to delivering personalised care across its care homes and hospitals. The Cedars Care Home provides residential care, nursing care and palliative care for 56 residents from palliative care for fifty-six residents.

Our competition in the September issue asked which part of Peterborough is home for the Phantoms. Bretton was the answer and the rink to which the happy couple made their visit. Sean sent us the following message: “We thoroughly enjoyed our night out at the Peterborough Phantoms. Great support for the team by all. The drummer who we knew did a

A big thank you to the many readers who sent in their entries. Look out for more competitions in the months to come.

Have you been refused a mortgage or equity release due to spray foam?

If you suspect you’ve been misled or had a poor-quality removal, act now! Contact us for a FREE survey and expert advice before it’s too late.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) states that spray foam may affect a property's valuation, particularly if applied incorrectly. Spray foam can reduce airflow in the roof, potentially leading to issues like mould, wood rot, and reduced structural stability.

❌ Foam left behind in eaves – Often hidden and hard to reach without proper access (scaffolding may have been necessary).

❌ Torn or damaged roofing felt – Careless removal can cause holes, leading to leaks and structural issues.

❌ Foil tacked to rafters – A common trick used to hide incomplete removal, preventing proper inspection.
