It’s getting closer by the day, and I’m not talking about the ticklish thirty days ahead for us ladies, as some of our chaps let loose that moustache once more during “Movember”. No, I’m talking turkey, trees, tinsel and trimmingup, as the whole wonderful Christmas season gathers momentum once more. Whatever you are planning over the next few weeks and hopefully finding plenty of ideas in this issue to help you, make sure to book early for your special events.

6-9
Primary School Open Mornings. 10 ............ ‘Get into Teaching’ Open Evening. 11 Edenham C of E Primary School. 14-16 What’s on: Events and clubs guide.
17 ............ Santa’s Sleigh Route.
With Bonfire Night upon us, early this month, please remember to look out for our pets but also to see how our neighbours are coping, not just with the fireworks, but with the cold, wintery days ahead. Good neighbourliness costs nothing but can mean so much to the elderly who may be struggling on their own.

I see the Royal British Legion has this year put out the “Tommy 10,000 Steps Challenge.” The aim is for you to walk 10,000 steps a day throughout the month, raising money to provide vital housing, employment, and care for those who served our country. The daily exercise will, of course improve your fitness and mental wellbeing. Full details at https://rbli.co.uk/rblievents/tommy-10000-steps-challenge.
If cycling is more your thing, then how about challenging a certain Mr Neil Campbell? On October 5th in Arkansas, the British daredevil smashed his own world record for the fastest bicycle speed in a slipstream, reaching 175.89 mph behind a pickup truck. Just watching the video footage left me breathless! And finally:
✦ I struggled with the instructions on how to fly my new drone –it went straight over my head!
✦ I couldn’t understand why my doctor said my posture was bad... but I had a hunch.
Enjoy the read … and for all you moustache cultivators, have a magnificent “Mo-vember”!

At our school, we believe that giving children the opportunity to take on roles and responsibilities is a vital part of their personal development.
From EYFS Ambassadors to Play Leaders and School Council representatives, these roles are more than just titles—they are stepping stones to building confidence, leadership, and a sense of community.
Children are encouraged to apply for these positions through a formal process, which includes writing a letter or completing an application. This not only helps them reflect on their strengths and interests but also introduces them to the real-world skills of communication and self-presentation.
One pupil insightfully remarked, “It is like when you get older and have to apply for a job, it is preparing us for that.” This comment captures the essence of what we aim to achieve: preparing our pupils for life beyond the classroom.
Roles such as EYFS Ambassador allow older pupils to support younger children, fostering empathy and mentorship. Play Leaders help

create a positive and inclusive playground environment, while School Council members represent their peers and contribute to important decisions that shape school life.
These responsibilities instil a sense of pride and ownership in our pupils. They learn that their voice matters, that their actions have impact, and that they are capable of making meaningful contributions to their community. By embedding leadership opportunities into school life, we nurture not only academic growth but also the character and resilience that will serve our children well into the future.

To survive in this dazzling, dangerous world she has mastered many masks: loving wife, devoted sister, and obedient spy. Now she must step out of the shadows. She might outlive her rivals. She might know the court’s darkest secrets. But power rests on the edge of a tyrant king’s sword. Where will it fall next?

This month is not as restful as you might think, as the allotment needs a good tidying-up. Don’t leave old crops to rot and get rid of as many weeds as possible so that they don’t take hold in the spring. Also, a priority is to give the allotment or vegetable patch a thorough digging over and spread manure over the surface, no need to dig in just leave it to be absorbed naturally. Don’t dig if the soil is too wet or frozen. You can then cover over the newly dug plot to keep the weeds at bay and the soil warmer for planting in the spring.
An important task for November is pruning fruit trees and bushes (except for cherries and plums) as they have shed their leaves and are dormant for the winter: also remove any netting from fruit cages to allow the birds to eat insects and eggs. Securing grease bands around fruit trees will help to fend off the winter moth. Bare-rooted fruit trees, bushes and canes are also dormant and therefore now is the time to plant them whilst the ground is not too wet or cold. Prepare the planting holes by digging in good compost or manure and when they are planted spread a mulch of well-rotted manure around the base.

Other jobs include:

• Protect cauliflowers from frost by bending over a few leaves to cover the curds, tie them in place.
• Secure covers over compost heaps/bins, although the material needs to be damp winter rain and snow will saturate it and slow the rotting process down.
• Start to harvest winter cabbage, Brussels sprouts, leeks, and parsnips, wait until after a frost for the parsnips as the frost encourages the sugars which give parsnips their sweetness.

• Propagate rhubarb crowns by lifting and dividing into smaller pieces, planting at the same depth in their new position.
• Dismantle bean canes, if you haven’t already, as leaving them in the ground will cause the bases to rot.
• In milder areas, broad beans can be sown for an early spring crop.
• Sow some windowsill herb seeds for the coming winter months.
• Salad leaves can also be sown now. In fact, sow every 3 weeks throughout the year and you’ll never again need to buy salad leaves. At this time of year, try Salad Leaf ‘Winter Mix’.

• Continue raking up fallen leaves and turn them into valuable leaf mulch.
If you have a greenhouse, give it a good clean and insulate if you intend to use it over winter. Don’t forget on sunny days to open the windows to increase ventilation as this will stop fungal conditions and especially downy mildew growing.

Dyke resident, Paul Taylor and a longstanding friend decided that the time was right to join forces, put together their almost fifty years of combined experience in the window and door installation business, and create their own company. So, in February this year, Oakview Windows and Doors Ltd appeared, and Paul is now keen to get the word out there.
The Oakview Windows and Doors team is dedicated to delivering exceptional craftsmanship and top-quality materials, specializing in premium uPVC, aluminium windows and doors. “Smart Aluminium Systems” and Deceuninck, (a leading international manufacturer of uPVC and aluminium window and door systems with superior insulation and design features) are but two of the companies Oakview uses for their quality installations.
Paul has worked for several large manufacturing companies in the UK and was recently responsible for running an online operation for a large sales company, covering the whole of the country. Oakview’s success comes from its wide range of products, following on from Paul’s vast experience in the industry. They offer a great variety of windows and doors for every taste and need, from classic styles to modern looks.
From energy-efficient double-glazed options to sleek aluminium frames, Oakview provide windows that combine beauty
with functionality. Choose from casement, sash, tilt-and-turn, and more to complement your home’s architecture. Whether you are seeking a sturdy front door or looking for stylish patio doors or secure bi-fold doors, you will find what you need with Oakview. What’s more, they can provide custom-made windows and doors, designed to meet your unique specifications.
Oakview have recently been installing a fascinating addition to their offering to the public, the “built-in blind” of which the Uni-Blind is a leading manufacturer. The blinds are enclosed within the double-glazed units that are fitted into uPVC, aluminium and timber window and door frames. Being sealed inside the glass means the blind control system, of which there are several options to choose from including a slider or a cord/ winder, is the only thing mounted on the face of the glass or frame. As a result, windows and doors with “built-in blinds” always look sleek, clean, uncluttered and ultra-modern. And the blind itself never needs cleaning because it is sealed permanently between the panes of glass.
In terms of making their presence known to the public, Paul has been eager to provide considerable sponsorship for this summer’s Bourne Festival, which took place on the Wellhead Field on July 11th to the 13th. A further example of how Oakview care for the community is the fact that a 10% discount is offered to all current and ex-British Services personnel for work completed by Oakview on the presentation of the owner’s valid card.

Oakview Windows and Doors has built a reputation for delivering highquality installations, exceptional service, and innovative home improvement solutions. From stylish internal glazing to cutting-edge extensions, Oakview makes it easier than ever to transform your living space. With years of experience in the industry, the Oakview team combines expert craftsmanship with a friendly, professional approach, ensuring every customer enjoys a stress-free experience.

The Self-Assessment tax deadline isn’t until January – but if you are self-employed or a small business owner, this is for you!
You might receive an HMRC scam email, or a scammer could pretend to be HMRC over the phone or through a text message. Common tricks include offering a rebate, requesting you to update tax details, or threatening arrest for tax evasion.
Five ways to spot a fake HMRC scam
1) Fake HMRC email address: The key to spotting whether the address is real is to hover over the ‘from’ address. The actual link the text leads to will not end in @hmrc.gov.uk (which all official emails from HMRC will). Use this HMRC email address to report suspicious emails: phishing@hmrc.gov.uk
If you receive what you think is a text scam, forward it to 60599
2) Tax rebate offers: An HMRC tax refund email is almost certainly a scam. Emails from HMRC will never offer you any repayment, tell you about a tax rebate, or ask you to send personal information.
3) Request for immediate action: Fraudsters will often try to scare you into complying by using phrases like “you only have three days to respond” or “urgent action required”.
4) Fake links and dodgy attachments: Any emails that contain links or have an attachment should be treated suspiciously. Don’t open any attachments that you aren’t expecting. These could contain viruses that will give scammers a backdoor into your computer and allow them to access your personal information, as well as your clients or customers.
5) Beware generic greetings: Be wary of emails that start ‘Dear Sir/Madam’, ‘Dear customer’ or ‘Hello’. Emails from HMRC will address you by your name. Report other types of HMRC scams
If you get:

• a message in an application, for example WhatsApp, take a screenshot and email it to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk
• a phone call asking for personal information or threatening a lawsuit, report it via the online form at www.gov.uk
• a letter, contact the HMRC team the letter says it’s from at www.gov.uk/contact-hmrc
• a message from a social media account, and you cannot verify the account it comes from, send details by email to security.custcon@hmrc. gov.uk and ignore it.

Having been involved in the Worth200 Celebrations, I thought it would be interesting to look back on other celebrations held in Bourne over the years. So, with the help of the British Newspaper Archive (www.britishnewspaper archive.co.uk) here are some highlights.
For Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887, the plans were:
• Procession to Abbey Church with a band; Thanksgiving Service with prayers.
• 12 noon: Free dinner for the men.
• 2.30pm: Children assembled in the Market Place to sing the National Anthem and march around the town.
• 3pm: Free meat tea for women and children over eight-years-old.
• 5pm: Free plain tea for children under eight-years-old.
• 7.30pm: A ‘feu de joie’ (gunfire salute) on the Abbey Lawn to start the sports (with cash prizes).
• Other entertainments included a funfair, games and a band.
For the Diamond Jubilee in 1897, only the children were fed, though there were a thousand of them. Tea for the event was “mashed” by kind permission of Bourne Brewery Company. A cycle parade, fireworks at dusk, followed by a torchlight procession to the lighting of a huge bonfire at 10pm on Stamford Hill, completed the event.

By 1902, for the Coronation of Edward VII, there was a more varied programme of events with a decorated procession of cars, bicycles, “comic turn outs” and horsemen. Sports were held for children and adults, with cash prizes and a baby show to complete the day’s entertainment. As the celebrations were lubricated with alcohol, dancing took place. However, the sequel to the event was the appearance of several town residents in front of the beak!
The Coronation of George V in 1911 followed the same format, but on the newly opened Recreation Ground.
Skipping forward to June 1953 and the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, a gymkhana was held on the Abbey Lawn. A carnival dance was held at the Corn Exchange and children’s street parties were held across town. The Wood View children had to ‘endure’ bagpipes as their entertainment, though they were presented with half a crown (a coin with a ‘modern day’ value of 12.5p!) The seventyfive children from Manning Road and Alexandra Terrace were in fancy dress, and souvenirs, including pocketknives, were distributed.

The Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977 saw an estimated two thousand people marching in torchlight procession to the bonfire at the top of Stamford Hill, whilst the next day a carnival procession of thirty-one floats drew the crowds.

Bourne, like all provincial towns, is not slow to party, but what struck me is the change in the ways we celebrate now.

Whilst it is normal for everyone to feel sad or upset from time to time, when these feelings are overwhelming, persistent, or are affecting your ability to function on a daily basis, you could be suffering from depression. It may be that you suffer from feelings of helplessness, guilt or worthlessness; perhaps you have difficulty making decisions, being overwhelmed or concentrating on anything; maybe you feel tired and pessimistic all the time.
In the depressed brain, the primitive part of the mind is much more active, and this part of the brain is normally very negative. This makes us feel hopeless and unable to see a way out and it can be a lonely and unforgiving place to be. The depressed brain is starved of positive chemicals and restricts your ability to think clearly and resourcefully. Depression takes away our confidence and our ability to remain rational and positive about ourselves and our situations. Our primitive and depressed mind is designed to focus on problems and be vigilantly looking out for danger. In this state of mind, we lose the ability to think clearly and intellectually. Hypnotherapy is designed to manage the chemistry inside your brain to help you move towards an optimistic outlook.
When we feel depressed, we want to put our life on pause and stop interacting with the rest of the world. We are much more tired and lacking
in healthy energy. We just want to stay curled up in bed and shut ourselves away. If you have been depressed, you may have noticed that you can ruminate or worry a lot during those periods. This type of worrying is typified by taking an “all or nothing” thinking style. This is because when we are stressed and emotionally aroused beyond a certain point, the mind takes the “fight or flight” approach and looks at the worst, most extreme scenario. We don’t look at our situation from a rational perspective, taking in all the possibilities like we might do when we are more relaxed
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can offer an alternative approach, helping you to focus on the positives in your life and working towards a brighter future. It works well as a supplementary therapy, working in tandem with other medical interventions. We work together to help you to understand how your brain works, why you might be suffering the way you do and how we can get you back to being the person you want to be. You already have all the resources that you need, and Solution Focused Hypnotherapy could help you to find them.

“It’s like a big dark cloud and hypnotherapy can help the sun shine through!”

Rebuild what time or weight loss took away… naturally.
Your journey to feeling confident in your body is something to be proud of, whether it’s through weight loss, lifestyle changes, or simply embracing a new chapter of life. But sometimes, those transformations can leave the face looking a little different - a loss of volume, softer contours, or skin that no longer reflects how vibrant you feel inside.
That’s where AesPlla can help.
As we age, our skin gradually loses collagen, the natural framework that keeps it firm, smooth, and defined. Weight loss, while beneficial for health and confidence, can accelerate this process, leading to a hollow or deflated appearance. AesPlla is a collagen-stimulating injectable designed to work with your skin, helping it rebuild strength and structure from within.

Unlike traditional fillers that simply add volume, AesPlla gradually encourages your body to restore its own collagen, achieving results that look refreshed,

balanced, and beautifully natural over time. Whether you’ve lost facial fullness following weight loss or are simply noticing changes from the natural ageing process, AesPlla offers a subtle, long-lasting solution that enhances your natural features without altering your individuality. It’s about celebrating your journey. With AesPlla, you can enjoy the confidence that comes from looking like yourself, just naturally revitalised.

Last month, I recalled John Keats’s “Ode to Autumn” … perhaps a little early. However, we are now entering the cosy season of warm fires, or at least central heating, and thoughts of tinsel … or just about!
So, what should we be watching out for as the deer wander into our view on local roads? (Wonderful animals but not gifted in the Green Cross Code, or any other code for that matter).
1
Obviously, as the nights darken, we need to take care under the Road Traffic Acts. Take care to adjust to nighttime driving.
2Check our cars are roadworthy and our insurance is in place.
3Check our heating systems are compliant and safe.
4
Make sure there is both a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide warning alarm installed.
5
Check on elderly relatives and friends.

6
Are our wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney in place, just in case. It can be very difficult without them.
7
Make sure we lock up at night. There are people out and about who are a real threat to our property.
8Check the small print as we think about buying those presents for events to come. Be aware of our rights under The Consumer Rights Act and Supply of Goods and Services Act.
9If there was a ‘flash flood’, do we have a plan? Would we go upstairs, and what would we do to cherished chattels downstairs? Are we close to water?
10If there was a fire, do we know how to get out? Is there another safe way out? Something to rest on?
11
Check our communication systems for any emergency.
12
Make sure our pets are safe especially in the ‘fireworks season’.

Last month marked a very special milestone for W&P Legal – twenty years since we first opened our doors on October 5th, 2005. Back then it was just me and we were known as “Will and Probate Services”.
Over those two decades, we’ve had the privilege of helping almost 15,000 people plan for the future with confidence - from writing wills and setting up trusts to preparing Lasting Powers of Attorney and guiding families through probate. It’s been an incredible journey, and we want to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has placed their trust in us.

NICK ASH, Managing Director W&P Legal
At the heart of W&P Legal has always been a simple promise: to give our clients peace of mind. Whether it’s ensuring loved ones are protected, helping to avoid unnecessary costs and complications, or simply making sense of what can feel like a maze of legal jargon, our focus has never changed - clear advice, friendly service, and real understanding.
Of course, much has changed since 2005. Families are more dispersed, care planning has become a growing concern, and technology has transformed how we connect and share information. Through it all, we’ve adapted and evolved - combining modern tools with traditional values to make estate planning simpler, clearer, and more accessible than ever.

As we look to the future, our commitment remains the same: to continue delivering peace of mind to families across the country. Whether you’re dealing with bereavement, reviewing your will, setting up a Power of Attorney, or thinking ahead about how best to protect your estate, we’re here to help - just as we have been for the past twenty years.
To everyone who has been part of our story so far - our clients, staff, and professional partners - thank you for your trust and support. We look forward to the next chapter and to helping even more people plan with confidence and peace of mind.

Councillor Colin Pattison
Sunday September 21st saw Dom Brister from Don’t Lose Hope and myself walk from the Lincs Notts Air Ambulance base on Hems Way, Lincoln back to the Don’t Lose Hope Community Garden in Bourne, to raise money for my charities.

We were cheered along the route in many of the villages we passed through, like Dowsby and Morton, and it was fantastic to see people waiting at the junction of Dyke to see us go by and then several groups greeting us in Bourne. Thanks go to Lorna from the Snack Shack for the much-needed boost of snacks and drinks. Some 36.9 miles in twelve hours and two minutes - what a day!
The ‘thank-you list’ is enormous but I must first mention my employers, Warners Midlands Plc for their support and generous donation. I am forever grateful to Dom (and Nicola!) for the incredible impetus he added to the event, and for promoting and ‘live streaming’ on the day, and to Struan Cornell and his amazing colleagues from Community Response Lincolnshire for escorting us.

Thanks to the team at LNAAS, Bourne United
Other invitations and duties:
➜ Bourne Westfield Primary Academy to lead two morning assemblies to talk about democracy and my role as the current Town Mayor and the Town Council - thanks go to Kate Atkinson.
➜ The Mayor of Market Deeping, Councillor Bob Broughton's Civic Service. It's always a pleasure to be able to support a neighbouring town's Mayor.
➜ Bourne Lions Club 50th Charter Anniversary in the Corn Exchange. Thank you to the Lions for making us most welcome, particularly President Chris Chudley and Treasurer John Chudley.

Charities, Bourne and District Lions Club, Bourne Town Football Club, George’s Fish Bar, Gary’s Gardens, Nick Owen and the BRM, Claire Saberton and Discovering Bourne, and a very special thank you to Rick Hall from Hall and Hall Motorsport for their incredible generosity. I also thank everyone who has sponsored me (either via my GoFund.me page or in person), my fellow Town Councillors, (especially Brenda who was part of the support crew), Kirsty and Emma, and my wife Fiona for all her support.
Donations are still coming in, and we are now at an awesome total of £5,500. We will keep the fundraising going with other events, so hope to increase this total before my term ends in May next year.
➜ Celebrations and events for Charles Worth, the father of haute couture. Thanks go to Martin Siddle and the Trustees and well done to all the volunteers for marking this very special occasion.
Looking ahead:
November 9th Remembrance Day Parade. November 14th Civic Charity Fundraising Dinner. November 29th Christmas Lights switch-on.
Fond regards and for the love of Bourne,

Ninety years on from a small group of local cyclists getting together to September 13th, 2025, when over forty club members attended the celebrations, Bourne Wheelers Cycle Club have continued to roll along! The memorable day began with a ‘Club Ride’ of ninety minutes, starting and finishing at the Red Hall. All abilities were catered for, by offering three distances at different speeds.
For those not riding, there was plenty to do with films of famous international races such as the Giro d’Italia and Paris-Roubaix. There was also much historical information on display, relating to BWCC and kindly supplied by members who rode with the club in the early 1960s.
The Town Mayor, Concillor Colin Pattison, (accompanied by his wife and consort, Fiona Pattison) talked about how former member, Alan Dolby, who was present, had introduced him to cycle racing on the TV and how he has been following it ever since.

After the speeches, it was time for our youngest and our most senior member to cut the special cake, designed in the shape of a cycle, and iced in club jersey colours. Following refreshments, we adjourned outside for ’Go Ride’ events for the youngsters who will be our future.
A challenging, but not too serious, race around the grounds and every rider’s favourite … the limbo under an ever-lowered bar!

“Our future” getting ready for the ‘Go Ride’ events
To finish off the day, our special guests, Dan Galpin and Sian Botteley took a question-and-answer session, mainly addressed to the youngsters aspiring to reach the heights in competition, or to just enjoy a social ride in the local countryside.
The plans for the club centenary have already begun.

True to cross-country tradition, grey skies and blustery winds welcomed our Year 3 – 6 runners at Rutland Water. Despite a course change, removing the infamous uphill finish, the route remained a challenge. Witham Hall approached the day with enthusiasm, kicking off with a team warm-up and ending with determined performances all round. A special mention to Alice W, who claimed first place in the U8A Girls' race, helping the team to a fourth-place finish. The U10A Girls and U9A Boys both secured excellent second-place team finishes, while the U11A Boys earned a solid third overall. Well done to all our runners on a fantastic day of racing!

Yes you can! Many landlords believe that to change agents you must wait until the end of an existing tenancy, which is not the case.

A Tenancy Agreement is a contract between the Landlord and the Tenant, and changing agent does not affect the legal rights of either.
