Whilst I would never consider myself a football fan, I’ve got to admit that those fabulous Lionesses winning the Euros in Switzerland made me think it’s maybe not so bad after all. The most impressive memory that I’m taking from the win, however, must be the heroics of England veteran, Ms. Lucia Roberta Tough Bronze MBE. This lady not only scored goals and defended bravely but admitted, only after picking up her winners’ medal, that she’d played the whole tournament with a fractured tibia! Whenever has a middle name (‘Tough’) seemed so appropriate?
Evenings will soon be ‘pulling in’ and a sign that Christmas isn’t too far away is that last week, we found out who will be this year’s contestants on “Strictly”. Finally, for those of you whose “little ones” are either starting school this time or going on to further education … enjoy the peace and quiet, at least for a little while!

As our sun-soaked summer of ’25 continues to give, it has certainly been a belter for any sporting fan. Think Lionesses, the British and Irish Lions, Wimbledon, and particularly a nail-biting cricket Test series against India. During the latter, a swashbuckling batsman, Rishabh Pant, was to keep sports headline compilers busy all summer. Here are some that just might have appeared:
“Pant’s on Fire” … as he crashed England’s bowlers all over the Headingley ground.
“Panty Woes” … as he, had to leave the field with an injured knee.
“Pant’s Back To (the) Front” … as he returned to bat, almost on one leg!
And finally …
✦ Our dog loves Classical music, especially “The Tales of Hoffmann” – we’ve started calling him “Offenbach”
✦ I woke up last week dreaming I’d invented a new colour, but it was only a pigment of my imagination.
Enjoy the read!

Willoughby Academy in South Road, Bourne is an all-needs special school for pupils aged between two and nineteen years of age.

Willoughby Academy in South Road, Bourne is an all-needs special school for pupils aged between two and nineteen years of age. The Star Project has been a fully inclusive music project where every pupil at Willoughby Academy has been involved, whether this be through writing lyrics, film and photography ideas or playing instruments, vocalisations and of course singing! We wanted to create a school song, written by the pupils, celebrating everything they love about Willoughby Academy. What they came up with has completely blown us all away!

or chorus which were recorded in a temporary recording studio set up at Willoughby. Pupils who were unable to use their voices played instruments or activated switches to play different sounds that were all layered into the track. The highlight for everyone was recording the final chorus which took place as a full school in the hall.
As well as Damian and Sneaks on site for recording, we were supported by several staff members from Clancy, as well as film maker and photographer Fraser McGruer and Grantham College photography students.
This project began when I met with Damian Knowles as a representative of Clancy who do amazing work supporting Willoughby's career programme through STEM activities. Damian mentioned he is also a music artist and was able to pull together Sneaks, a fantastic sound engineer, as well as a mastering team and Floating Ducks record label to release the completed track.
We began by gathering pupils’ lyric ideas, either a sentence, single word or favourite phrase, which we then shared with Damian and a demo version was created for staff and pupils to learn, ready for recording on May 1st and 2nd. Some pupils selected solo lines, others group lines

This project has been a great many things for the wide cohort at Willoughby. Our formal learners compared themselves to Taylor Swift and are excitedly monitoring how many listeners they have on Spotify. For pupils on our careers programme, this has been a very different enterprise project, working with music professionals and considering wider public interest in the track to boost purchases and streams. For some pupils, this has been a deep-rooted sensory experience, exploring different sounds and discovering how they can be a part of the final track.
“We Shine” was released on July 11th and is available to buy and stream with all royalties going back into the school.

Students at Bourne Grammar School have been celebrating very impressive results this year. A total of 256 students sat their exams – the school’s biggest cohort ever – with eight pupils receiving a clean sweep of A* grades and fifty-four achieving A* or A grades. Of all results, 64.9% were graded B or better and 84% were graded C or better.
Headteacher, Mark Brunker, commented, “I am incredibly proud that our students have achieved so impressively - a testament to their hard work and dedication, ably supported by
our wonderfully talented staff.”
The eight students who achieved all A* grades were Shaan Damani, Amy Fletcher, Sam Gupta, Thomas Houghton, William Hughes, Sai Kandikattu, Chloe Kirman and Harrie Metcalfe.

With twenty-five A-Level subjects across a wide range of academic subjects, including Modern Foreign Languages and six Social Sciences, Bourne Grammar is proud to be able to provide a wide range of options for Year 11 students as they progress to Sixth Form study.

The Waterlily is a 'Sandal Boat’, a traditional Egyptian river sailboat, seventeen metres long, and built in 1963. It was originally used for transporting heavy goods, such as sand and stone along the Nile from Luxor to Aswan. Now, its sundeck is a perfect piece of paradise, yours for relaxing upon and having meals and drinks, and enjoying the pleasure of sailing in comfort.
Below deck, there are three air-conditioned cabins, each with comfortable beds, private shower room, clothing space and bedside storage cabinet. Two cabins have twin beds, and one has a large double bed, and the Nile can be viewed from all areas below deck. All furniture aboard the Waterlily has been hand-crafted in Luxor by a local tradesman, giving it a more traditional feel.
The kitchen is where the chef prepares delicious meals to be served on deck. The food will be of Egyptian cuisine, using fresh produce, some of which can be seen growing alongside the Nile. Continental food can also be prepared and any dietary needs catered for with an advanced request. Wine and beer are available with meals or at other times, whilst people are requested not to smoke below the deck.

Whilst sailing along the magnificent River Nile, you can simply relax and take in the sounds and beautiful scenery, knowing that your friendly crew will always be on hand to help in any way they can, to make your trip an experience of a lifetime. There will be an ‘extra special night’ on board with barbecue food, traditional music and dancing. Unlike the larger sailing vessels, the Waterlily offers a much more personal service; you will soon discover how travelling on a traditional sailing boat on the longest river in the world is so very special.

October to April is generally considered to be a perfect time to visit Egypt with temperatures ranging from 20C to 30C, making it ideal for exploring the many ancient sites along the course of the Nile. Rainfall is minimal and there’s plenty of sunshine, so the lounges aboard the Waterlily can cater for sun-worshippers as well as shade-seekers.

Cruising the Nile from Luxor to Aswan gives you the chance to visit many of Egypt’s world-renowned historical sites, including the the Valley of the Kings and Luxor Temple. The Luxor Souk (market) is a treasure trove of history, culture, and vibrant energy, and a ‘must’ for the visitor to Egypt. Along the cruise, there are possible trips to the Temple of Edfu, one of the country’s best-preserved temples, and Kom Ombo.
This fabulous experience on the Waterlily can be yours for a four-day cruise, starting at a very competitive £3,100 for a party of six.

➜ Exclusive cruise on this converted sailing ship
➜ Comfortable cabins and a relaxing sundeck
➜ Visit the treasures of Egypt in the company of an expert guide
➜ Explore the incredible Valley of the Kings
➜ Feast on typical and refined cuisine

This gorgeous, abridged edition brings The Iron Man to a picture book audience for the very first time! A landmark publication. The Iron Man isn’t scary - he’s just very, very hungry . . .
It’s not until he starts chomping on

fence posts and tractors that he comes to the attention of the angry farmers - who trap him in a hole with the help of a little boy called Hogarth. Then Hogarth comes up with a new plan - it turns out that the scrap yard, with its metal bedsteads, broken down cars and old cookers is the perfect home for a hungry Iron Man.

Caribbean rums are highly respected and hugely appreciated throughout the world.
Jamaica and the Dominican Republic are well known producers of Caribbean rums, as well as other Caribbean islands, that create delectable beverages of this type.
The Caribbean is very much recognised as the ‘birthplace of rum’ and the distilleries located in the Caribbean are amongst the world’s very best. Differing ingredients and different processes of productions define the appearances, bouquets, pleasures for the mouth and sensations on the palate.
Multi award-winning Diablesse Rum is UK-based and was founded by Cleo Farman. The Diablesse Company produces small-batch blends of fine, aged rums, especially selected from Barbados, Guyana and Jamaica. The quality plus several unique profiles of flavour, that create distinctive productions, are now recognised globally. The rums are created using historic methods and matured in charred American Oak ex-Bourbon casks.
Diablesse Caribbean Rum (40% vol) is a very regular choice for rum lovers. Caribbean rum is renowned around the world, and this production (in my opinion) justly deserves the high rating it constantly receives. Little introduction is required for this delightful, small-batch rum, which is produced utilising a blend of fine, aged rums, from Jamaica, Guyana and Barbados to a great advantage.

Diablesse Clementine Spiced Rum (40% vol) is a favourite with many spiced rum devotees. I found the Clementine contribution, for this popular beverage, to be evident throughout. Flavoursome and with a blend of warming Caribbean-inspired spices, including a hint of ginger, this small-batch production continues to gain in popularity.
Diablesse Coconut & Hibiscus Rum (38% vol) I found to be most pleasant indeed. From the bouquet to the mouth’s delight, with the flavours of fresh, natural coconut, plus hibiscus and ripe, red berries certainly coming through. The palate’s sensation continues, with the pleasures of this unusual, small-batch delectation.
The very informative website has all details of stockists and information about long-standing, proven methods of productions. I also found the website reading to enlighten me about the centuries-old stills, which are used in the productions.

Online ordering is easy, and orders are dispatched efficiently and quickly.

From its spacious premises on Cherry Holt Road in Bourne, Cherryholt Mobility has been providing an important service for the residents and district for two decades... and looks to the future with confidence.

In 2005, Anita and Steve Buffery, whose Lincolnshire Bow window business was already established on the site, decided to take on the neighbouring cycle repair business, whose owner, Tony Bills, was retiring. Very soon, the idea of offering a mobility scooter and appliances service made perfect sense, seeing the increase in their popularity, allied to the changing demographic of Bourne over the last three decades. An instant market, was waiting and since then, the sales and servicing business went from strength to strength.
Cherryholt Mobility is about much more than scooters, however, and everyone in the team has
specialist experience and knowledge to impart. Stair lifts, wheelchairs, rollators, rise/recline chairs, mobility aids, and ‘Sandpiper’ footwear for customers with problem feet are amongst the impressive range of products available, along with servicing, repairs and maintenance of scooters and wheelchairs.
The friendly team comprises Terri Buffery, Anita Buffery, Hayley Rainbow and Zak Lindsay. Over the last twenty years, very competitive pricing, efficient servicing and ever-helpful staff has encouraged many customers to remain loyal, for which Terri and the team are most grateful. Cheers to the next twenty years!

Living with OCD can feel incredibly isolating, debilitating and can take up a lot of time. When left untreated, it can become progressively worse, and it can be very frustrating for individuals and their loved ones. Hypnotherapy for OCD is one of the most promising opportunities to consider.
Obsessions refer to unwanted, intrusive urges or thoughts that trigger powerful feelings of discomfort. These obsessions occur regularly, and they are beyond the person’s control, dominating a person’s life and restricting it.
Common obsessions and compulsions in OCD are:
✦ Cleaning excessively
✦ Fear and panic over sickness in themselves or others
✦ Excessive bathing or brushing teeth
✦ Avoiding certain objects and/or social activities
✦ Rearranging things in a particular order
✦ Repeatedly checking or switching off a particular object, for example closing a door
✦ Rereading or rewriting material
✦ Repeating specific body movements
✦ Repeating activities in safe multiples
✦ Cancelling or undoing ‘bad’ behaviours
Having OCD takes up a lot of time out of the day and causes substantial distress in daily functioning.
Hypnosis is a practice that treats illness by harnessing the power of the imagination. When you are in a state of deep hypnotic relaxation, your imagination becomes a powerful way to calm and take the sting out of the anxiety created and neutralising your intense emotions.
In a hypnotic trance state, your imagination is influenced to alter your experience and master your anxiety and panic, allowing you to distance yourself from an object or situation which causes distress. Hypnosis also helps reprogramme and rewrite the unhelpful thoughts in your mind. Changing these thoughts can break bad habits and introduce healthier ways to function.

Last month, we left our hero working in the prestigious department store of ‘Swan and Edgar’, Piccadilly, London. In 1844, at the age of nineteen and with his apprenticeship completed, he moved to ‘Lewis and Allenby, Silk Merchants’, on Regent Street. What happens next seems an extremely adventurous move.
In 1846, Charles departed for Paris with £5 in his pocket and an inadequate grasp of the French language. There, he found employment with silk merchants, ‘OpigezChazelle & Cie’. His rise was meteoric. By 1848, he became Chief Salesman and developed a clothing department, exhibiting his ladies’ fashions at the World Fairs in 1851 and 1855. His designs brought him much acclaim, and in 1858, he partnered with a Swedish colleague, Otto Gustav Bobergh. They resigned from their employer and opened ‘Worth & Bobergh’, at 7 Rue de la Paix.
All this took place against a backdrop of political upheaval. From 1848 until 1852, there was a period of civil unrest until, in December, Louis Napoleon (nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte) proclaimed himself Emperor Napoleon III and established the Second Empire. Inadvertently, Napoleon was to play a large part in the rise of the House of Worth.
At a ball in 1860, a gown that Charles had made for Princess Pauline von Metternich caught the eye of Napoleon’s wife, Empress Eugenie. She quickly became one of his most illustrious clients.

However, conflict was never far away and on July 16th, 1870, France declared war on Prussia. By September, the Siege of Paris was in progress and Charles and his family left Paris for Le Havre. Charles’s nephew Frederick, who was living and working in Paris, chose to take a more radical route home.
In October, Frederick bought a ticket to travel to Belgium by hot air balloon. The balloon was shot down in Verdun, Prussian territory, and Fredrick was accused of espionage, imprisoned for spying for France, and tried by court martial. Luckily, his British passport meant he escaped the firing squad, and he was released in 1871. Otto Bobergh never returned

to the business, and Charles carved his family’s future as ‘The House of Worth’.
By 1878, the company is reported as “employing 1,200 hands, in workshops of immense size, situated in the most expensive part of Paris. A great number of robes and costumes are sent to all parts of the world.”

Look out for silhouettes of many of Charles Worth’s fabulous dress designs appearing around Bourne in the run-up to the Celebration Weekend. Sponsored by Bourne Town Council and created by Lucie Lawson.

Words from Richard Wood

Having a solicitor used to be just like having a family doctor; everyone had a connection with various professionals. At Double and Megson, we have always believed in the ‘personal connection’ and that is why we have acted for different generations of the same family … grandparents, parents and children. The quality of the connection is just as important as the legal knowledge. At Double and Megson in Bourne, our roots go back to 1978 which is a long time.
Understanding how the community has changed over the years helps considerably. Having regular communications with those in other practices and professions, be it accountants, estate agents, barristers and the Court staff, has greatly helped over the years. We believe that our clients are our friends, and we care for you as though you are our friends. Some of the matters we deal with are
very challenging. Moving house, a bereavement or a divorce, or perhaps putting protections in place such as a will or Lasting Powers of Attorney may be regular for us but it is not for you, and we always remember this.
We enjoy meeting our clients, with our strapline … “Our Business is Knowing Yours”.
Keeping on top of legal changes and procedures, we have the experience, and we are insured. Knowing how things should be done is what the law is about and not the adverts we can see online offering something which is too good to be true. It usually is! Working across different subjects keeps us in touch with our training from many years ago, and our breadth of knowledge is an economy of scale.
“Industrious but personal, and with that unique focus” is our ambition in your legal matters.

In recent years, more families have been seeking alternatives to the traditional funeral. One option growing in popularity is direct cremation — a simple, dignified, and affordable way to say goodbye.
At Simple Goodbyes, we offer direct cremations locally unlike some of the national providers advertising in the media, providing the reassurance that your loved one remains in local care.
A direct cremation separates the cremation itself from any funeral or memorial service. It is unattended — there are no mourners present at

the crematorium — allowing families to remember their loved one in their own way, at a time and place that feels right. This flexibility can be invaluable, giving you more time to plan a personalised memorial or celebration of life.
For those who wish, we can also arrange an enhanced direct cremation, offering the chance to visit the chapel of rest before the cremation – something many of the
national online providers are unable to offer.
We also offer direct cremation funeral plans, enabling you to arrange and pay for a direct cremation, easing the worry for your family when the time comes.
Whether you choose a simple farewell or a later memorial, our experience ensures a goodbye that is truly your own.

Before becoming a resident at Wood Grange Care Home in Bourne, Harry and his wife, Rose, would frequently dine at The Six Bells at Witham on the Hill. Following his request to celebrate his 91st birthday at this fabulous local hostelry, the ‘Activities Team’ at Wood Grange thought it would be so special for Harry and Rose to return there!
Harry invited Tony and Mary, friends who they have made through Wood Grange, and the much-loved volunteer, Julie who attended too. Ruby-Mae and Anya were delighted to see Harry enjoying the change of scenery, enjoying the environment and atmosphere he so deeply admired before.

Residents at Wood Grange Care Home in Bourne were recently joined by a group of local mums with babies and toddlers, all invited in by Wood Grange with one aim – to have lots of fun and put smiles on to the faces of the residents. Activities Coordinator, RubyMae Walker and Anya are delighted to report that a fabulous time was had by all. Andreas led the ‘Jingle and Mingle’ session and he was “truly amazing”, and it was “wonderful to see the residents’ smiles light up the room.”
Mary and Tony’s Anniversary and Tony’s Ninetieth!

Mary and Tony celebrated their marriage of sixty-eight years over afternoon tea with family and friends recently. The Baston Lounge was beautifully decorated with class and delicacy by Ruby-Mae and Sharon, and these decorations were admired by everyone. The family and friends filled the room with love and happiness as they had come together to celebrate a wonderful marriage and a very happy ninetieth birthday. Tony said, during his toast, that “Mary has always been the best birthday gift of all.” The kitchen prepared the fabulous afternoon tea with style and nurse Simona made a lovely bespoke lemon and honey cake.

Alovely client of mine once shared a thought
I’ve never forgotten: “Planning my future feels empowering. I want to live well, but also know I’ve prepared for whatever life throws at me.” This simple wisdom rings especially true when thinking about how we make decisions about our health and personal welfare.
When most of us think about “what we own”, we picture the obvious, your house, your savings, perhaps a dusty guitar in the loft we’ve been meaning to restring since 1998! But these days, a huge part of our lives exists online, and when we die, it doesn’t vanish with us. Emails, social media profiles, online bank accounts, cloud photo libraries, cryptocurrency wallets… they all keep ticking away unless someone knows how to find them.
In England and Wales, it’s estimated that the average adult has well over one hundred different online accounts, from banking apps and Amazon logins to loyalty cards, streaming services, and obscure forum memberships you signed up for once and never visited again. That’s a digital paper trail longer than most people’s arm and, without a clear record, it can be a nightmare for loved ones trying to wrap up your affairs.
The problem? Passwords and security measures are designed to keep strangers out, but after you’ve gone, even the people you’d want to have access may find themselves locked

NICK ASH, Managing Director W&P Legal
out entirely. Accounts can remain dormant, subscriptions keep charging, or valuable assets (like PayPal balances or cryptocurrency) may be lost forever. Not to mention the emotional importance of photos, videos, and messages that could be stuck in an inaccessible account.
The solution is surprisingly simple: keep a secure, up-to-date list of your digital assets and where to find them. You don’t need to jot down every password (in fact, for security reasons, you shouldn’t store those in plain text) — but you should record:
● The type of asset (e.g. email account, online bank, social media profile)
● Where it’s held (website/app name, service provider)
● Any reference numbers, usernames, or details your executor might need
● How to locate any secure password manager you use.
This record should be stored somewhere safe, ideally a sealed document with your will, or an encrypted file your executor can access and make sure it’s regularly updated.
Think of it as leaving a treasure map. Without it, your digital possessions could be scattered and hidden forever. With it, your loved ones have a clear, legal route to gather, close, or preserve your online life.
It’s not morbid, it’s practical, caring, and a little bit kind. After all, you’ve spent years building your online world. Don’t let it disappear just because no one knows where you kept the keys.

Now is the time to lift potatoes before the arrival of cold damp days and before the slugs and worms can invade the crop: make sure they are well dried out before storing them in light-proof sacks.
Onions should also be lifted and if you are keen you can string them and then hang in a cool, frost-free place such as a shed. Cut courgettes and marrows regularly because they will be finished by the end of the month, as will outdoor tomatoes. Remove any green tomatoes and place them in a drawer or shoebox to ripen.
September is an ideal time to care for and improve your soil:
Composting: As you harvest crops and pull up spent plants, collect any leaves, plant debris, and vegetable peelings to add to your compost heap. Turn the compost to aerate it and speed up the decomposition process.
Green manures: If you have empty beds, consider sowing green manures like mustard, clover, or ryegrass. These will improve soil structure, add organic matter, and help suppress weeds over the winter.
Mulching: Adding a layer of organic mulch, such as well-rotted manure or garden compost, around your perennial plants (like fruit trees and bushes) will help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve the soil.
Clear weeds: Before they have a chance to set seed, remove any weeds. September is the last chance to get on top of them before growth slows down in winter.
Top-up raised beds: Raised beds tend to sink over time as organic matter breaks down. Top them up with fresh compost or well-rotted manure to prepare them for winter crops or to rest over winter.

Now is a good time to plant several crops which are hardy enough to withstand the winter or are fast growing. Some examples are:
• Lamb’s lettuce, oriental leaves, winter lettuces (“Valdor” “Arctic King” or “Winter Density” are good varieties to choose)
• Spring cabbage
• Peas for early harvest next spring
• Spinach
• Onion sets.
A few jobs that need doing include:
• Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms(1in) above the ground.
• Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry.
• Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter. Tall growing varieties may need staking against autumn winds.
• Harvest apples and pears.
• Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in.
• Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners.
• Apply nematodes to control slugs and snails while temperatures are still mild.
• Feed all late crops with a general fertiliser such as pelleted chicken manure.
• When your peas and beans finish, leave the roots in the ground after cutting and composting the top growth. This allows maximum nitrogen to re-enter the soil from the root nodules.
• Clear the soil of spent crops, leaving them to rot on the soil may spread disease.
Enjoy the fruits of your labour!

As the UK sizzled through its third official heatwave of the summer, the property market is feeling the heat too. Annual price growth hit 3.9% in May, cranking up the heat with a 1.1% monthly jump from April. London was the only region to feel a cool down in prices between April and May.
The North East experienced the largest monthly increase, with a 2.2% rise, followed closely by the North West

and the East of England, both up 2%.
Although Aprils figures followed the quieter period after the stamp duty deadline, the market has more than bounced back. It continues to show remarkable resilience, supported by four interest rate cuts since last August.

with Rob Schwarz

n this month’s edition, I’m exploring financial planning and how it differs from traditional financial advice. In my opinion, the approach of traditional financial advisers has given our profession a bit of a bad rap…
+ Only accessible by the wealthy
+ Focused on selling products
+ An expensive and opaque service
Throughout my career, I’ve worked for traditional financial advice firms as well as, most recently, co-founding my own financial planning business, Finova Money Ltd.

In its simplest form, proper financial planning can be described as…
“Planning ahead, so that you have enough money to live your desired lifestyle forever, without the fear of your money running out.”
It’s about tailoring a financial roadmap for you and your family, so that you know you’re on track to achieve the things that are most important to you.
Whilst a financial planner does all the things a financial adviser can do, the financial planner goes one step further by helping clients answer big questions like…
+ Am I going to be okay?
+ When can work become a choice?
+ Can we afford to do the things we love?

Unlike financial advice firms who may have big barriers to entry (£500,000 minimum investment, for example), proper financial planning is much more accessible.

It's for anyone seeking financial stability, whether you’re just starting out and need guidance with budgeting and saving, or whether you’re a seasoned professional, planning for life after work. As such, the level of service you require should be determined by your unique circumstances, not by how much wealth you have accumulated or ‘assets under management’.

Building a roadmap which shows you where you are today and how to get to where you want to be will give you complete clarity over your financial future.
I’m happy to say that proper financial planning is on the rise and becoming more accessible.
This may involve…
+ Getting organised and tidying up your existing plans
+ Agreeing a bespoke savings plan to fill any gaps
+ Ensuring your plan is well-protected if anything happens to you
Armed with this information, you’ll feel confident about your future, knowing you have a robust plan in place to support it.

If any of the above sounds of interest, I’d be delighted to offer a free initial, 30-minute call to see how I may be able to help – just scan the QR code below. See you next month!

It is never too early to think about ‘winter-proofing’ your property and your pocket. Energy saving remains a hugely important topic, as does trying to get the very best deal when it comes to heating, insulating and protecting your home.
However, this is something the fraudsters will also be aware of, with numerous scams out there. These will most likely involve people pretending to be energy suppliers, regulators, or other associated companies to gain your trust and trick you into sharing personal and/or financial information through cold calling, social media, emails, website pop-ups or texts.
Scams to be aware of:
Solar Panels: Some scammers might use the fact you have solar panels to try and pressure you into maintenance contracts. Beware also of fraudulent companies texting to mislead homeowners by saying their ‘solar panel warranty has expired’ or companies that contact or cold call to sell you a ‘maintenance package’ while pretending to be with the certified Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).
Ofgem Energy: This is where a scammer claims to be from the energy regulator Ofgem. They may ask you to change your bank details or provide personal information to get funding or cheap energy. Ofgem will never ask you for personal information, sell you energy, or show up at your house.
Home Improvements: Be cautious if a company contacts you claiming that your home poses safety risks. Common scams may involve offers to install energy efficiency upgrades that promise to reduce your utility bills or claims that your spray foam insulation requires removal.
Meter Scams: Smart meters are free to install. Your energy supplier should organise the installation, carried out by a qualified professional. Scammers may impersonate your provider or another company to trick you into agreeing to an installation, sometimes requesting an upfront fee or personal details.
Energy Rebate: Although the Energy Bills Support Scheme £400 Government energy bill rebate ended in March 2023, some scammers are still trying to trick homeowners into handing over personal and financial details.
If you think you may have been the victim of fraud, report the scam to Action Fraud and Citizens Advice.

The Cedars Care Home in Bourne went back in time recently when residents and their guests were treated to a talk from guest speaker Chris Carr from ‘Briga and Friends’ (a local historical re-enactment group).
Chris gave the residents a fascinating talk on the international spice trade in an informative and entertaining costumed presentation. They were fascinated to learn about the ‘Sumptuary Laws’, which dictated what an individual could wear and what foods you could eat, dependant on your social status within society- only wealthy members of society could eat nutmeg!

and historical knowledge. Resident, Sima Walker said that the presentation was very interesting, and it reminded her of her own experiences in cooking, whilst Jo Kay expressed how marvellous it is that this old knowledge is not lost.
Residents were challenged to identify a range of spices including cassia, frankincense, ginger and mace; before Chris shared the mythological connection to cinnamon and cassia: they were said to be the nesting material of the phoenix!
Residents were then invited to ask questions, which Chris answered using her incredible local
Rebecca Aldred, Senior General Manager of The Cedars said, “We do our best to provide a wide range of activities and entertainment as part of the lifestyle enrichment programme, and to respond to the wishes and interests of our residents. Living in a care home doesn’t put a stop to celebrating life, and our engaging activities are designed to be enjoyed by all who want to join in.”
Tonderai Makahamadze at The Cedars Care Home in Bourne has been crowned Registered Nurse of the Year for the North-East and Scotland Division in the Barchester Care Awards 2025 and is through to the national round of judging.
The Barchester Care Awards celebrate the staff who go the extra mile for the benefit of the 13,500 residents living in Barchester’s 267 care homes and private hospitals across the country. Categories range from ‘Registered Nurse of the Year’ and ‘Carer of the Year’ to ‘Dementia Care Champion’ and ‘Activities Coordinator of the Year’.
Over 5,000 nominations were received from homes and hospitals across the UK. All entries were a very high standard and Tonderai is thrilled to have been named the winner for the NorthEast, beating hundreds of others.
Tonderai said, “It is truly an honour to receive this recognition, and

I am humbled. I could not have achieved this without the support of my amazing colleagues. I am proud to be part of such a dedicated, talented and compassionate team. Thank you so much for believing in me.”
Senior General Manager, Rebecca Aldred, added, “This is an amazing achievement. We are so proud of her. Tonderai was nominated for her endless compassion and dedication in both her role as registered nurse caring for our residents and for her role as clinical lead, as well as the consistent kindness and support that she shows to her colleagues.”

Once again, it’s been a busy period of engagements and events.
Fiona and I were delighted to attend Councillor Alison Snooks, the Mayoress of Sleaford’s, charity fundraising “Summer Tea Party”. A lovely afternoon despite the showers, and it’s always nice to be able to support a fellow town’s civic head and chat about our respective towns’ issues.
Another event I was absolutely delighted to support was the 60th Wedding Anniversary of Alan and Kathleen Dolby, a very special occasion for them, and I was honoured to go along for the afternoon party gathering. We wish them many more happy years together, and I am always glad to support residents celebrating milestone anniversaries or birthdays.
Fiona and I attended the VJ 80 Commemorative Event on August 15th at the Cenotaph on The Memorial Gardens. A short service led by Father Stephen Buckman and a very poignant address to mark the end of World War Two. It was a privilege to lay a wreath on behalf of our town and community. Thank you to all those who attended and contributed, in particular Cllr Helen Crawford for coordinating the event; Kirsty and Emma from Bourne Town Council; Father Stephen Buckman; Roadphone NRB; Community Response Lincolnshire; and of course, Bourne United Charities.

Training for my “Sunrise to Sunset Charity Fundraising Walk” in aid of LNAAS and Don’t Lose Hope continues at a pace. As I write, I have just completed my latest training effort, (eighteen miles in five hours!) and am taking this very seriously, putting in long hours to achieve this goal.

Councillor Colin Pattison

Now, my friends, I need your help please! You will have hopefully seen in this wonderful magazine the details of how you can donate. There is a “Go Fund Me” link and QR Code which you can scan. We will also take cash or cheques for those who wish to donate that way. Please contact the Bourne Town Council office on 01778 426123. They can also help with sponsorship opportunities etc. If you see me walking around the parish on one of my training walks, please approach me for a chat and/or to donate.
As I alluded to last month, Dom Brister from Don’t Lose Hope will be joining me on the walk; he too will promote this, so let’s get behind it and get the word out there. Keep an eye out for the posters around town and on the Town Council’s Facebook page.
“Miles for Hope and Helicopters” … Sunday 21st September 21st, thirty-plus miles from HEMS Way, RAF Waddington to the Don’t Lose Hope Community Garden. Please get behind Colin and Dom.
Sincere regards and for the love of Bourne, Colin.

The chill of the freshly cut ice, the roar of a loyal and energetic crowd and the thrill of the hard-hitting pace of the UK’s fastest indoor sport –all guaranteed when the “Wendy’s Peterborough Phantoms Ice Hockey Club” take to the ice for the 2025/26 season in September.
The Phantoms are about to embark on a new dawn at the club, following the departure of long-serving and much-loved Head Coach, Slava Koulikov, at the end of last season. The new man at the helm, Ashley Tait, has over one hundred Great Britain international caps to his name, alongside an esteemed club career –marking an exciting appointment for the Phantoms.
Despite ice hockey being one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, many local people may not know that Peterborough has a team – a successful one at that, with several trophy successes in the cabinet over the last ten years. The sport itself is played in three periods of twenty minutes, with the clock stopping at each whistle, ensuring maximum entertainment for the duration of every game. And, unlike most other team sports, ice hockey is always played to a conclusion, with the enthralling prospect of overtime and penalty shots a genuine possibility on a weekly basis.
The Phantoms play in the Planet Ice National Ice Hockey League, the second division of the sport within the UK, and consistently prove to be stern, competitive opponents for everyone in their division. The Phantoms’ team consists of several hometown heroes, long serving Brits, bright local prospects and skilled players from overseas – culminating in a brilliant group, full of talent and desire to battle hard for the club.
On the weekend of September 6th and 7th, the Wendy’s Peterborough Phantoms welcome foreign opposition to Planet Ice Peterborough for a pair of eagerly anticipated pre-season fixtures against Neuillysur-Marne of the French second tier. The new league season begins two weeks later!

Two family tickets (2 adults +2 juniors) are up for grabs to see any home Wendy’s Peterborough Phantoms Ice Hockey game this season.

If you’d be interested in going to watch the Wendy’s Peterborough Phantoms, fixtures can be found at www.gophantoms.co.uk/gameday/2025-26-fixtures with tickets available to purchase online at www.gophantoms.co.uk/tickets. For your chance to win one of these, just answer the following question: In which part of Peterborough do the Wendy’s Peterborough Phantoms Ice Hockey Club play their home games: a) Orton Bushfield b) Werrington c) Bretton?

If you’ve ever thought about giving singing a go, NOW is your chance! We’re inviting around forty women to join a fun, ten-week singing project, starting in September.

Over one hundred women sang last year and raised thousands of pounds for charity. Most of them had never sung, rehearsed or performed as part of a group – or in public – before, and here’s what they had to say:

Annette Mawby, Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice says: "We're completely in

awe of the passion and dedication that participants bring to this project. The funds raised help Sue Ryder continue to support people going through the hardest times of their lives, ensuring no one faces dying or grief alone.”

Yes you can! Many landlords believe that to change agents you must wait until the end of an existing tenancy, which is not the case.

A Tenancy Agreement is a contract between the Landlord and the Tenant, and changing agent does not affect the legal rights of either.
If your letting agent is not delivering, give them written notice that you would like to leave, and we’ll take it from there.
