Those longed-for summer holidays are now here and hopefully, the dear old sun won’t have worn itself out burning everything to a frazzle in July. As I write, the (very welcome) rain is freshening things up so there is hope that we won’t be facing a hosepipe ban. It’s always a challenge for parents to keep little ones occupied during the school holidays so I’m hoping that you’ll be able to find plenty for them to do.
Here, in Bourne, we are so fortunate that our fabulous open-air swimming pool continues to attract hundreds of people year on year, and long may that continue. As with any of the events that are staged during the summer in our towns and villages, they only succeed with the general public making the effort to go and spend money having fun (in the sun!)
Don’t forget your sun cream either!

What a summer of sporting excellence! The England v India Test series; The Lionesses seeking to retain their European crown; Chelsea FC winning the “Make Me a Mega Million Cup.” a.k.a. ‘The FIFA Club World Cup”; Open Golf and British Lions v Australia still to come.
For me, the standout moment so far has been the magnanimous accepting of defeat in the Men’s Wimbledon Final by Carlos Alcaraz. He sat, smiling in his chair and applauded, thanked Jannik Sinner for a brilliant final, and he was gracious in defeat.
“I try to forget that I lost it. It’s just about [the fact] I was able to play in it. So, right now I’m not bad at all. I’m just happy,” he said. (Oh, and the £1.52 million runners-up pot might come in handy!)
And finally:
✦ Polly once won a miming competition.
She just couldn’t say how excited it made her feel.
✦ I once told her that she drew her eyebrows too high
She seemed surprised.
Enjoy the read (and the sunshine!)

This is a fascinating exploration of the healing power of plants, from soothing hops, chamomile and valerian, and invigorating guarana, maca and ginseng, to the infection-fighting turmeric and tea tree. Herbal remedies, natural tinctures, and the historical and botanical background of plants are revealed through expert text and beautiful illustrations. Exploring the original folk remedies they inspired and the science behind them, this is the story of how humans have harnessed nature’s apothecary.

Minerva, a graduate student of horror literature is researching the life of Beatrice Tremblay, an obscure author of macabre tales. She discovers that Tremblay’s novel, “The Vanishing”, was inspired by a true story: Tremblay attended the same university as Minerva and became obsessed with her roommate, who then disappeared under mysterious circumstances. These disturbing events also echo the stories her Nana Alba told about her girlhood in 1900s Mexico, where she had a terrifying encounter with a witch. Minerva suspects that the same shadow that darkened the lives of her greatgrandmother and Beatrice Tremblay is now threatening her own in 1990s Massachusetts.

But can they survive the journey?

The Trinity Term brought to a close what has been one of the most successful years in Witham Hall School history. The children have excelled across all areas of school life, earning a record twentytwo scholarships to senior schools including Eton,
Marlborough, Oundle, Rugby, Oakham, and Uppingham. The breadth of scholarships was as impressive as the number – from academic to music, art, drama, and sport – the children excelled across the board.

This year, our curriculum has taken children on adventures far beyond the classroom. From exploring ancient civilizations to imagining the future, our pupils have developed a deep understanding of the world around them and their place within it.
We’ve also welcomed a variety of inspiring visitors— from local sports teams to renowned authors and scientists—who have shared their stories and sparked aspirations in our young learners.
Our connection to the local area remains strong, with enriching visits to places like Grimsthorpe Castle. These trips have brought history to life, allowing children to learn about the many roles within the estate and how it has evolved over time.
We were also delighted to receive a successful Ofsted inspection this year, following on from our equally positive SIAMS inspection—both of which recognised the strength of our school community, the quality of our teaching, and the care we provide for every child.
As we say a fond farewell to our Year 6 pupils, we do so with pride, and eagerly anticipate welcoming our new starters in September, ready to support them as they take their very first steps with us.
At Edenham, we believe in the power of community. We love hearing from families, neighbours, and friends, and we welcome anyone who would like to learn more about our school. If you’d like to get in touch, please call us on 01778 591207.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

If you’re a fan of driving on a sunny, summer’s evening along tree-lined country lanes and arriving at a magnificent picture-postcard, stone building in the middle of a quintessentially English village, then take a trip out to The Griffin Inn in Irnham.
Discovering Magazines’ Claire and husband Chris, accompanied by their canine buddies, made the journey on Thursday July 10th, and were welcomed by the ebullient owner, Jamie Benton-Jones. Claire makes it sound like it was certainly a special evening:
“Arriving at The Griffin, we were immediately struck by the lovely grounds, plenty of room for the dogs to tear about, plenty of water and even poo bags provided! Jamie showed us to our room when we suggested a possible overnight stay – it was enormous, with a comfortable bed and a beautiful view towards Irnham Hall. Then, it was to the garden to take the evening air and cool, refreshing pre-dinner drinks. Amps Fine Wines of Oundle and ‘Small Beer’ are the reputable suppliers upon which Jamie relies.
We had chosen to eat in the bar area rather than the spacious lounge and were pleased to see that several other diners had come for meals and drinks, always an encouraging sign. The service was prompt and with a smile.
The warm, salted focaccia bread with fennel butter began the trail of delicious food.

Chris chose Pork Belly Bang Bang, served on a slaw – it was soft, sweet, juicy and full of flavour. My starter was just divine – Seared, Hand-dived Scallops, cooked to perfection in a chorizo butter sauce and dressed with pea shoots.
For the main course, my Crab Cake Salad had been beautifully seasoned; it was soft and full of crab, with salad leaves, avocado and fresh chillies - a wonderful array of textures and flavours. Chris went for the Korean Pork Burger and salad, served in a brioche bun. With just the right amount of spice, and fries dressed with chilli, garlic and mayonnaise, it was delicious.
The desserts were mightily impressive. Apple Tarte Tatin with apple ice cream and butterscotch sauce was just divine, whilst the Lemon Torte with blood orange sorbet and berry compote was sharp, yet still delicious.
This was an extremely comfortable dining experience, with low key elegance and the bonus of being super dog-friendly. We were all made to feel so welcome and cannot wait to return. The bedrooms are available mid-week from just £95.

If you’re about to travel outside of the UK, you may need to be vaccinated before you set off for your trip. The childhood vaccination programme in the UK protects you from a number of diseases, but you may need extra vaccinations or antimalarials if you’re planning on visiting certain parts of the world.
Getting vaccinated can help prevent you from getting ill if you’re exposed to diseases which we don’t normally have in the UK. We can help you understand how to keep your risks low while abroad and help you work out which vaccinations and antimalarials you may want to consider depending on things like:
● Which regions you’ll be visiting
● What activities you’ll be doing
● Your age and general health
Some travel vaccinations may be needed several weeks before departure. Ideally you should see us six to eight weeks before travelling, but we may still be able to help if you’re leaving sooner, even days before you travel.

Words from Richard Wood
John Keats was inspired by autumn, a time of wonderful colours and the changing powers of nature. In our own lives, we hope the exciting summer temperatures are still around to treat us to some additional Vitamin D as we head towards autumn next month. We start to think of the cosy nights to come and of the lead-up to Christmas (sorry to mention it so early!)
Seasonally, what should we be thinking legally?
1
Do we need to update our wills? The Law of Intestacy can cause real injustice if our wills are not up to date.
2Do we need a Power of Attorney to protect us from the risks of incapacity? The alternative procedure of applying for Deputyship is cumbersome and problematic. It is also costly.
3
If our son or daughter is going to university, make sure they are properly insured if driving
They should be the main driver. All our cars need to be fit for winter and the changing conditions. We need to check that our cars comply with the requirements of the Road Traffic Acts. Vehicles must be serviced and tyre treads checked. If we are in an accident, we do not want to be held responsible.
4Check student insurance for belongings and especially for expensive laptops and phones.
5If about to rent out a property, take updated legal advice on how you could repossess if necessary. Section 21, a nonfault-based eviction procedure is being amended. This could make repossessions extremely cumbersome and more difficult.
6Check that home insurance covers your property for storm and flooding, including lightning risks. Does it meet your requirements?
7Check your gas system is safe. There could be risk and blame.

You can turn off your desire for an addiction by taking control of your subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is like a child and sometimes needs to be told what to do!
Your brain is constantly changing and adapting, depending on what’s going on in your everyday life, creating new neural connections. Without treatment, the brain uses neural pathways to trigger emotions, needs, pleasure, and cravings, which feed the addiction.
You could be addicted to smoking, gambling, alcohol, compulsive shopping, sugar, ‘Red Bull’, caffeine, food, or even the overuse of gadgets. No matter what your addiction is, when it begins to disrupt
your life and relationships it’s time to take control by changing your thoughts and behaviours.
Some people use an addiction to forget a problem, to mask pain, dampen down emotions or to reduce stress and anxiety. Solution focused hypnotherapy reduces stress, anxiety, and looks at the emotions or triggers fuelling the addiction, allowing you greater control over the addiction.
Today, hypnotherapy for addiction is a growing trend. With hypnosis, we aim to get to the root of the problem through hypnotic trance. In this state, your mind is more receptive to suggestions, changing ingrained behavioural patterns and rebuilding your emotional health.
“Take control today”

At long last, we are now looking at warmer days and lighter evenings and thinking about holidays and social events, so what better time to start looking at ourselves?
All we hear in our clinic from our clients is that they want to freshen up their look, without it being too obvious, so that their friends and family think they look well, but they can’t work out why, as subtlety is key.
Often, people go overboard with fillers and treatments when small “tweakments” along the way work so much better for an overall pleasing aesthetic.
Here at Deep-in Aesthetics, Alistair administers antiwrinkle treatments on a regular basis and is known for his professionalism after twenty-six years working in pharmacy and is often praised for his pain-free injecting skills.
The three areas that can be treated are the forehead, the glabellar (the area in between the eyebrows) and the crow’s feet at the side of

the eyes. The injections have been around for over twenty years and have been proven to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing the muscles temporarily and then softening, reducing, or even removing them. The treatments are minimally invasive, virtually painfree, and the treatment is completed within a few minutes without any down time so that you can continue with your day without anyone knowing what you have had done.
Over the next fourteen days, the results will take effect, and you will see a noticeable difference in the lines and wrinkles, and any new skin creasing is then stopped along the way, thus improving the quality and appearance of your skin. Results last about three months, depending on how often you have been having the treatment, and lifestyle factors including smoking and activity levels which reduce the time frame needed. It is an amazing preventative treatment, and we are looking forward to welcoming new and old customers so that we can get you on the anti-wrinkle journey… one that you won’t want to get off!

Bourne is getting ready to celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of Charles Frederick Worth in October. Many events are already in progress with more to come over the summer, and the town has pulled together to raise the profile of this local hero. Events culminate in a massive celebration on the weekend of October 11th and 12th.
He was born in 1825 in Wake House, North Street, Bourne, to William Worth and Ann Quincey. He had an elder brother and sister, William and Sarah. His father was a solicitor and had had a quarter share in the large local practice of Benjamin Smith Solicitors in Horbling though, by the time Charles was born, he had left the company, somewhat under a cloud, and had set up his own business at their family home. An unfortunate burglary from his office meant the loss of his accounts and ledgers, a crucial asset of his business, and whilst he struggled on for some years, by the time Charles was eleven in 1836, William was declared bankrupt, and the family’s fortunes took a turn for the worse; the awful situation not helped by the death of his sister Sarah the previous year.
1836 was a pivotal year in Bourne. The 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act had radically altered the way workhouses were operated, and the Victorian work ethic was, some might say cruelly, put into

practice. 1836 saw the opening of the Bourne Union Workhouse on St Peter’s Road, designed to accommodate three hundred people.
Charles’s brother William had already left for London for a job with HM Customs, a career he was successful in until he faced issues with his mental health in 1869. Charles, at the age of eleven, had to leave his studies at the Grammar School and go out into the Bourne workplace, first for Wm. Daniell Printers, then with Jemima Todd Milliners, where he helped trim ladies’ bonnets.

His breakthrough came with a London department store in 1837. He wrote, "Chancing to know a gentleman who was then a solicitor on Parliament Street, I wrote to him begging him to find some position for me in the capital. He interested himself in me and induced the dry goods firm of Swan & Edgar to give me a post in their establishment, where I remained for seven years." As their advertising now states, “For over 150 years, the world-famous Swan & Edgar department store marked the cornerstone of London’s West End luxury fashion scene”, so what better place for a fledgling fashionista?

Legal support for business, for family, for life
Slimming World Consultants in Bourne are celebrating being part of the organisation’s District of the Year 2025, after Cambridgeshire (which includes Bourne) was awarded the coveted title at a prestigious awards ceremony, held at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham. The team, which is made up of groups run by over sixty highly-trained Slimming World Consultants, including Gail Josh and Lesley Thornalley-Grey who run the Bourne groups, are so proud of this accolade.
The award was based on the outstanding quality of the groups in key areas, such as members’ incredible weight-loss success, the vibrant and inclusive atmosphere of the groups, members’ success from their first week, and the Consultants’ ability to encourage and motivate the groups.
Lesley says, “I’m absolutely over the moon and incredibly proud that our Bourne groups are part of this massive achievement. Every member is a star; they have each worked so hard to transform their lives while cheering on and supporting their

Both consultants are aware that many people are turning to weight loss drugs in true desperation but acknowledge these are not a ‘silver bullet’ or quick fix to the personal issue, and that’s why both Lesley and Gail would be happy to support any member using these as an option to lose weight with the change of habits and mindset which are crucial for long-term success.
“It’s the support we provide at Slimming World that sets us apart. We focus on equipping members with lifelong tools and support to lose weight and keep it off. They quickly discover they don’t have to go hungry or give up their favourite meals with our science-backed, healthy eating plan, “Food Optimising”. Alongside that, they discover how they can become more active at their own pace and explore the emotional and psychological side of their relationship with food so they can make changes that work for them and that stick. With every milestone reached, you see their confidence grow and their lives change along with their clothes size!”

Navigating the world of personal finance can be daunting, especially if you’re just starting out. However, by focusing on a few key numbers, you can set yourself up for long-term success. Here are three essential metrics that I track with my clients…

Your savings rate is the percentage of your income that you save and invest each month. This single number will have the biggest impact on your financial future. The higher your savings rate, the more you will accumulate over time. If you’re currently saving 15% of your income but can cut out some unnecessary expenditure and nudge that closer to 20%, you’ll be making great progress.
Life will throw changes your way—promotions, bonuses, and lifestyle shifts—so make it a habit to adjust your savings rate accordingly.

Understanding your effective tax rate is crucial for maximising your financial position. This metric reflects the average rate at which your income is taxed and can be a powerful tool for financial planning.
By tracking this number, you can identify any leakage and look at ways to improve your tax efficiency accordingly, by taking advantage of available tax allowances.
In my opinion, every pound of tax saved is an instant return on your investment. Smart tax planning can significantly reduce your tax burden, leaving more of your hardearned money to save and invest.
If you’re diligent about saving and investing, and you plan ahead to save tax, you should see your net worth increase over time

While it’s easy to view net worth as a vanity metric, tracking your net worth provides a clear picture of your overall financial health and whether it’s trending upward. Your net worth is the difference between what you own (assets) and what you owe (liabilities). If you’re diligent about saving and investing, and you plan ahead to save tax, you should see your net worth increase over time. This upward trend is not only motivating but also a tangible indicator that your financial planning is paying off!
From my experience, improvements in any of these areas will boost confidence and demonstrate that you’re making meaningful progress. Remember, financial success won’t just happen – it takes work, especially in those formative years.

*Investments carry risk. A pension is a long-term investment, not normally accessible until the age of 55 (57 from April 2028).

If you want to find out more about how I can help you on your financial journey, scan the QR code to set up a free initial, 30-minute call. See you next month! rob.schwarz@finovamoney.co.uk

Since the beginning of July, TOOLBAR, who have been supporting local people back to work since 2009, have been meeting at Wake House, North Street, Bourne.
Initially, this was on a temporary basis during the month of June, but with its central location and connections to other charities within the building,

they have decided to call Wake House ‘home’ for the foreseeable future. We are delighted to have them here and to be able to offer a safe space for such an important charity.
TOOLBAR can be found upstairs in The Conference Room, number 11, on Mondays, 10am to 12noon. All consultations are free and confidential.
What is Swanky Rags?” I hear you ask… maybe Peterborough’s best kept secret when it comes to Prom, occasional wear, and weddings. We have been dressing ladies in the finest of gowns for all their special occasions since 2006 and we are going from strength to strength. As styles change, so do we and we aim to have the most sought-after designs in store, at all prices to fit everyone’s budget.
Prom ’25 was our biggest and best yet. Such a huge success and all our swanky girls looked absolutely stunning in their chosen dresses, some of which can be seen on our Instagram and Facebook pages, through photos they have sent us of them in their dresses.
The Prom 2026 season kicks off with some very exciting news… we are going to the EXCLUSIVITY of the UK’s leading designer and supplier of Prom Dresses, Evening Wear and Leavers Party Dresses in the UK: PROM FROCKS – which guarantees no saturation of the same brands in every shop selling the same dresses. That’s a scoop! We are so excited to be bringing this brand to Peterborough stores and have already been to choose our dresses for Prom ’26, and they are dazzling.
One question we always get asked is, “When should you start Prom shopping?” and the answer is unbelievable, but October is the perfect start time – our appointment book is now open and starting to fill up for half term. “Why so early?” you may think. Well, we get our new season dresses in September/October and it's always ‘first come-more choice’ as we only sell one style of dress to one function – not even in a different colour. To ensure this, we keep a Prom log and as the dresses are sold to each school, they are logged to that school, and we don’t allow customers that attend the same school to even try on any dress that may have been logged.
Right now, we have a massive sale on with prices from £50, so if you can’t wait and want to grab a bargain, contact us at www.swankyrags.co.uk, or follow us on Facebook and Instagram and get yourself an appointment now.

Alovely client of mine once shared a thought I’ve never forgotten: “Planning my future feels empowering. I want to live well, but also know I’ve prepared for whatever life throws at me.” This simple wisdom rings especially true when thinking about how we make decisions about our health and personal welfare.
When you reach your forties or fifties, you’re likely caring for elderly parents, managing your family, career, and perhaps even enjoying grandchildren. Life is rich but undoubtedly busy. In the midst of it all, have you considered what would happen if illness or incapacity meant you couldn’t express your medical wishes?
Two tools I always recommend to my clients are Living Wills (often called Advanced Directives) and a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) for Health and Welfare. Used together, these offer a practical and reassuring way to ensure your voice is always heard, even when you can’t speak for yourself.

NICK ASH, Managing Director W&P Legal
An LPA allows you to appoint someone you trust - perhaps your partner, an adult child, or a close friend - to make healthcare and welfare decisions for you if you become unable to. From everyday care decisions to vital medical treatments, an LPA provides your trusted loved ones with clear authority, avoiding stressful conflicts or confusion.
However, even the most thoughtful attorney might feel burdened when making crucial medical decisions. That’s where a Living Will becomes invaluable. This document lets you set out your specific wishes about medical treatments you would or wouldn’t want, such as life-sustaining treatments like ventilation or resuscitation. It clearly communicates your preferences to both your loved ones and your healthcare professionals, relieving others of uncertainty at emotionally difficult times.
Recently, a dear friend told me how her mother’s Advanced Directive brought immense comfort during her final days. Her family, guided by clear written instructions, felt reassured they were honouring their mother’s own wishes, rather than guessing or worrying about what was best.
Creating an LPA and a Living Will isn’t about giving up control - it’s about taking control, empowering yourself and your family. It brings peace of mind, removes burdens, and provides clarity for everyone involved.

If you want to talk about any of these issues and get your plans in place, we are here to help. Please call us on 01778 252301 or book a consultation at www.wplegal.co.uk

This year, National Allotment Week is August 11th-17th and the theme is “Allotments and Wellbeing.” The event highlights the incredible benefits of allotments and encourages individuals, families, and communities to connect with the land and with each other.
Allotments have long been a cornerstone of sustainable living, offering people the opportunity to grow their own food, enjoy time outdoors, and adopt more active lifestyles. In addition, allotments foster meaningful connections and friendships while contributing to the development of vibrant, cohesive communities. Even if you don’t have an allotment but a veg patch in your garden, or even mixed borders, it is a known fact that being outdoors and working in the garden has immense health and wellbeing benefits.
August is the month when you reap the fruits of your labour and hopefully, after the lack of rain, you will have a bumper harvest. In fact, sometimes you have far more than you can eat but there are several ways of preserving the fruit and vegetables for use through the winter months. They should be picked in their prime and if any are damaged should be eaten immediately. Some ways of using excess crops are: making chutney, flavouring vinegars, drying, blanching and freezing, bottling, pickling, and storing.
Jobs for August include:

• Water regularly to retain precious moisture.
• Strawberry runners that have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot where you have not grown them for at least

3 years. Planting them through plastic will help conserve moisture and provide warmth during the winter.
• Cut to the ground all summer fruiting raspberry canes that have borne fruit this year and tie in the new green canes that will produce next year’s fruit.
• Outdoor tomatoes should have their growth stopped by the middle of the month – nip out the leading growing shoot just above the highest truss. Continue pinching out and do not forget to provide support for the plants as they become more heavily laden – also for cucumbers, peppers and even fruit trees.

• Keep earthing up potatoes to prevent the tubers being exposed.

• Dig over any spaces that have been left from harvesting crops, where you could grow green manure such as clover or vetch, which will provide nitrogen for the soil or alfalfa, cress or mustard which will help break up the soil.
• Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes as this will encourage growth lower down.
• As space becomes available when crops finish, you can plant overwintering crops such as Brussels sprouts, spring cabbage and winter cauliflowers. Cabbage seeds can be planted in a temporary bed or in pots or modules –remember to cover them with nets to keep off the birds and caterpillars.
• For harvesting in the autumn and beyond, you could sow lettuce (keep out of the glare of direct sun), rocket, spring onion, radish plus winter salads, including mibuna, mizuna, mustard leaf and lamb’s lettuce.
Enjoy the fruits of your labour!

• The Summer Solstice, which marks the longest day of the year is celebrated around the world. This year in the Northern Hemisphere, it occured on Saturday 21 June at 03:42 BST. The solstice has been celebrated for thousands of years and held great importance in ancient cultures, especially in pagan and Druidic traditions.

• As the days grow longer and we are now in the busiest season for the rental market, and average UK rents rose in May for the fourth consecutive month. Despite this, the average rent of £1,307 per month is below the peak level seen in September 2024.

Dyke resident, Paul Taylor and a longstanding friend decided that the time was right to join forces, put together their almost fifty years of combined experience in the window and door installation business, and create their own company. So, in February this year, Oakview Windows and Doors Ltd appeared, and Paul is now keen to get the word out there.
The Oakview Windows and Doors team is dedicated to delivering exceptional craftsmanship and top-quality materials, specializing in premium uPVC, aluminium windows and doors. “Smart Aluminium Systems” and Deceuninck, (a leading international manufacturer of uPVC and aluminium window and door systems with superior insulation and design features) are but two of the companies Oakview uses for their quality installations.
Paul has worked for several large manufacturing companies in the UK and was recently responsible for running an online operation for a large sales company, covering the whole of the country. Oakview’s success comes from its wide range of products, following on from Paul’s vast experience in the industry. They offer a great variety of windows and doors for every taste and need, from classic styles to modern looks.
From energy-efficient double-glazed options to sleek aluminium frames, Oakview provide windows that combine beauty
with functionality. Choose from casement, sash, tilt-and-turn, and more to complement your home’s architecture. Whether you are seeking a sturdy front door or looking for stylish patio doors or secure bi-fold doors, you will find what you need with Oakview. What’s more, they can provide custom-made windows and doors, designed to meet your unique specifications.
Oakview have recently been installing a fascinating addition to their offering to the public, the “built-in blind” of which the Uni-Blind is a leading manufacturer. The blinds are enclosed within the double-glazed units that are fitted into uPVC, aluminium and timber window and door frames. Being sealed inside the glass means the blind control system, of which there are several options to choose from including a slider or a cord/ winder, is the only thing mounted on the face of the glass or frame. As a result, windows and doors with “built-in blinds” always look sleek, clean, uncluttered and ultra-modern. And the blind itself never needs cleaning because it is sealed permanently between the panes of glass.
In terms of making their presence known to the public, Paul has been eager to provide considerable sponsorship for this summer’s Bourne Festival, which took place on the Wellhead Field on July 11th to the 13th. A further example of how Oakview care for the community is the fact that a 10% discount is offered to all current and ex-British Services personnel for work completed by Oakview on the presentation of the owner’s valid card.

At Oakview Windows and Doors, we pride ourselves on being your trusted local experts. We are here for all your window, door and more needs. With over 50 years of experience, our team is dedicated to delivering exceptional craftsmanship and top-quality materials. We specialize in premium uPVC,aluminium windows and doors, as well as glass exterior awnings. We work closely with homeowners and businesses. Our goal is to enhance the beauty, security, and energy efficiency of
their properties. Customer satisfaction is at the heart of everything we do, ensuring every project is completed to the highest standard.
At Oakview Windows and Doors, we deliver over 50 years of skill to every project. We have a steadfast focus on quality craftsmanship. We are dedicated to customer satisfaction. Our mission is clear: to elevate homes and businesses across the UK with top-tier uPVC and aluminium solutions.

This month, many of us will be taking a well-earned break and the chances are (and particularly if you have teenagers) that your mobile phone or tablet will be going with you. You may be needing to catch up on work emails or simply want to flood your social media channels with photos of your getaway!
But how do you look after those devices like laptops and PCs that will most likely be staying at home?
Home insurance and/or travel insurance will cover most cases of theft or accidental damage (be sure to check your policy) but it's still a good practice to take a few simple steps to make sure your devices are as safe as they can be.
• Back up your devices. It’s so simple and it should be something you do regularly anyway. Make it a priority to get everything backed up before you leave. Accidents happen and it’s easy to lose all your important data with just the slip of a hand. Don't just back up to the cloud, consider having a backup to a separate hard drive.
• Update your software. Again, a simple task that’s easily forgotten but can make a huge difference if anything goes wrong. Making sure you have up-todate security software is paramount!
• Secure your devices. Use a PIN, pattern lock or two factor authentication. Don’t forget to add security authentication to your laptops and PCs.
• Be wary of which Wi-Fi you connect to. It's tempting to connect to any free Wi-Fi when you’re away to save using up your valuable data allowance. Think very carefully before connecting to unsecured public Wi-Fi. There’s a huge risk that your devices could be hacked, sensitive data stolen or infected with malware.
• Be careful what you share on social media. You might think you’re just making your friends envious with your beach or foodie photos but, if you make it public that you’re away from home, any thieves will be able to take advantage of your absence. Now is a great time to check who sees your posts and consider making it private to friends only so you know only those you trust can see where you are.
Safe Local Trades member, Ben from File Genie and his team can offer a wealth of advice and support, whether updating your software and backing up your devices or if you think your device is not operating correctly. On Saturday July 12th, we had an Open Day where we welcomed local wildlife enthusiast, John Parsonage, to the Don’t Lose Hope community garden. John is known locally for his interesting and interactive displays in schools, community groups, and at Open Days where he helps to educate the young and old about wildlife.
He is passionate about our environment and nature, and is a keen wildlife photographer, as well as having an extensive collection of ethical taxidermy to create an interest and educate us all about the wonders of what’s around us.
As a landscape contractor with a BSc degree in Landscape and Amenity Management, John has a truly excellent knowledge on how to create a

beautiful garden that attracts wildlife; from creating wildlife ponds and wild areas, to creating bat, owl and kestrel boxes. He is a keen advocate for the use of the natural world and outdoor spaces as a way of improving mental health and wellbeing, and it was a joy to see so many people pop in to see him and his amazing display of wildlife artefacts.
We also welcomed ‘Keith’s Crafty Creations’. Keith is a regular helper/volunteer at the Don’t Lose Hope community garden and shed. He is an extremely talented wood turner and advocates how he uses his creativity and talent to improve his wellbeing and promotes a sustainable ethos by crafting so many beautiful pieces out of old bits of wood.
Finally, we also held a cake sale to raise funds for the charity. We were truly overwhelmed with the generous donations from the community of Bourne and had a lovely collection of cakes to sell. There was also a spectacular fresh cream strawberry pavlova, made by Claire Saberton, which was won in the raffle by Barbara. Our other raffle winner was Steve Johnson, who won a carrot cake.

We would like to warmly thank the DLH volunteers, John, Keith, and all the cake bakers for helping make the day such a success, and to everyone who came down and supported us, donated and bought the cakes! We are delighted to have raised £142!

As the town of Bourne prepares to celebrate the 200th birthday of its famous son, Charles Worth, in October this year, the Old Town Hall is teaming up with The Aveland History Group and Bourne U3A to curate some suitably stylish verse!
Poetic Worth is asking for themed poetry, based on the life and works of the iconic House of Worth fashion designer. For inspiration, a list of prompts has been published on their webpage www.bourne townhall.org.uk/ poetic-worth along with full details of how to submit your poem.
There is also a category for those under-16 to create poetry with ideas including

writing about their favourite clothes or perhaps about someone famous and what they wear.

To help budding poets to develop some verse, there will be a ‘Creative Writing Workshop’ on Saturday September 6th Please see website for more details.
The call-out will culminate in a poetry event on Sunday October 12th at the Red Hall in Bourne where poets are invited to read out their poems and/or have them displayed for the weekend’s celebrations (full details will be on the website nearer the time).

Please check out our webpage for all the details of this Worth 200-themed poetry call-out and get writing!

If you’ve ever thought about giving singing a go, NOW is your chance! We’re inviting around forty women to join a fun, ten-week singing project, starting in September.
Working towards a fantastic live performance at The Cresset on November 6th, you’ll learn to sing, meet new people, perform live on stage AND raise money for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, with plenty of laughs along the way!
Over one hundred women sang last year and raised thousands of pounds for charity. Most of them had never sung, rehearsed or performed as part of a group – or in public – before, and here’s what they had to say:
✦ Loved every moment and wish I could do it all over again!
✦ An amazing experience… the support was fantastic!
✦ Fabulous experience shared with a great group of women!
Annette Mawby, Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice says: "We're completely in

awe of the passion and dedication that participants bring to this project. The funds raised help Sue Ryder continue to support people going through the hardest times of their lives, ensuring no one faces dying or grief alone.”
#Sing4Life2025 kicks off with introduction sessions at the John Mansfield Campus in Peterborough (PE14HX) on September 4th (7pm-9pm), September 5th (7pm-9pm) and September 6th (2pm-4pm). There’s NO pressure - just a friendly introduction and a chance to meet the team and some of the other women who’ll be taking part.
For more details visit www.peterboroughsings.org.uk, email info@peterboroughsings.org.uk or call 01733 425194, but contact first to reduce waiting time.

The monthly Bourne Indoor Farmers’ Market features an ever-changing line-up of stalls for visitors to explore. It regularly hosts around fifty stalls at Bourne Leisure Centre on the third Sunday of each month from 10am to 2pm. The market began in early 2023 and has gone from strength to strength, supported each month by hundreds of eager visitors from Bourne and beyond. It runs all year round, except January.
Organiser, Neil English added, “Our modern Farmers’ Market doesn’t just attract the usual ‘foodie’ stalls such as artisan bread, award-winning farm butchers, seasonal produce, fine cheese, handmade cookies, local preserves, pies, cider, sauces, fresh fish, etc. Stallholders are encouraged to cater for gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian customers too. We also welcome local, ethical handmade crafts and local cottage industries. Expect a few surprises each month, plus stalls for all ages - even locally 3D-printed toys and models, photography, original artwork, plus irresistible cakes of course!”

Refreshments are available. Local street food sensations, ‘The Cheesy Pig’ regularly attend with their popular menu of ‘Loaded Fries and Pulled Pork’. Free admission and free car parking.
Sorry, no dogs, except ‘assistance dogs’.
Follow the Facebook page www.facebook.com/ bourneindoorfarmersmarket to keep up to date. Stall details are published in advance, plus new stalls are highlighted.
For stall enquiries, please call 07977 889927 or email neil@nationalevents.co.uk.

Bourne Wheelers’ Longest Day Ride takes place on the nearest Saturday to June 21st every year, and this year was the seventh year that it has taken place. It is a four-part 150-mile ride, basically four “club rides” in one day, to raise money for a designated charity. There is also an alternative, rather less strenuous 100-mile ride!
For the past three years, we have raised funds for Prostate Cancer Research, a charity close to our hearts as several of our club members have been touched by it, and one rider currently has this condition. We were so pleased that he was able to join us on the day, managing to do some miles with us.
The day started at 8am, with the longer route riders setting off fifteen minutes earlier than the other group. After each ride, it ends back at the start for coffee and cake. At lunch time, there is a full spread of food to re-energise the riders for the next ride. Mid-afternoon is more coffee and cake before finishing the last loop to make it either 100 or 150 miles for the day! Recovery food is also available to anyone who wants to stop at the end of the day.

The event has grown from a handful of riders to this year, where local Bourne Wheelers were joined by fellow cyclists from Spalding and other cycling clubs, making nearly forty riders who took part throughout the day.
The event brings a sense of camaraderie and is a very sociable day’s riding, as well as a sense of achievement for anyone who has never ridden 100 or 150 miles in a day before.
The total raised so far from this year's Longest Day Ride for Prostate Cancer Research stands at just over £1,000 plus gift aid, and donations are still coming in. As for next year's ride, we are confident that it will develop and grow as it has over the last few years. The fundraising page will remain open until the end of August 2025, below is the link to the “Just Giving” page for anyone wishing to donate:
www.justgiving.com/page/ stuart-handley-4
This is just one of the many Bourne Wheelers Cycling Club events held annually, and this year, to mark its ninetieth anniversary on September 13th, 2025, we will be celebrating with all our memberspast and present - at the Red Hall.

I was absolutely delighted to be invited to cut the ribbon to start off the Bourne Tractor Run which was organized by Lisa and Tim Sleight.

Even with the rain, it was great to see over fifty tractors turn out, along with families to wave them along their way. This event is really growing into something rather special, and I hope another Christmas event will take place to continue raising funds for the British Heart Foundation. Well done to everyone involved.
Fiona and I were also equally delighted to be invited to the Bourne Abbey Church to meet and welcome the new Curate, Father Isaac Frisby. Father Isaac, who had only been ordained the previous week at Lincoln Cathedral, is a great addition to our parish and I welcome him and wish him the very best for the future. Following on from the service, we enjoyed a lovely buffet lunch in the Church Hall hosted by Father Steven Buckman.
It was also a great pleasure to formally open the “Bourne Festival 2025” on the Wellhead Field. Thank you to Bourne Round Table and their President, John Christie for making Fiona and I so welcome. Thanks also to the master of ceremonies, Norman Brown and Bourne United Charities. Let’s hope plenty of money was raised for their charitable causes. Talking of charities, a reminder that I have nominated Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance and Don’t Lose Hope as my chosen charities for my mayoral year. To kick things off, I am very pleased to announce, “The Mayor’s Sunrise to Sunset Charity Walk – Miles for Hope and Helicopters”
Councillor Colin Pattison

It is my intention to walk with Dom Brister on Sunday September 21st from Helms Way at RAF Waddington, (the home of LNAAS) back to Bourne, finishing at the Don’t Lose Hope Community Garden. For information on how to sponsor, to be an event sponsor, opportunities for brand visibility and local recognition, please keep an eye out on social media or phone Bourne Town Council on 01778 426123, or email assistant@bournetowncouncil.gov.uk.
Please, my friends, if you can, let’s make this something special and different - it’s not every day a Town Mayor goes on a 30+ mile walk, but this is for two very worthy causes. “Hope and help” should never be out of the reach of anyone, but it does cost, so let’s do our little bit if we can!
Kind regards and for the love of Bourne,
Bourne Town Council would like to correct the incorrect organisation which was thanked for their help at the Picnic in the Park event in June, published in the July edition of Discovering Bourne. The organisation which should have been thanked is Community Response Lincolnshire, not Lincolnshire 4x4. We apologise for this error.
