Awarm welcome to our July issue in what is turning into a rather warm summer for us here in the east of the country – although rather damp at times too! In 1935, George Gershwin penned the immortal line: “Summertime and the livin’ is easy”, and I’d like to think that every year, we go some way to making your summer a little easier with our extensive range of interesting features, advice and a comprehensive schedule of what’s happening in our area in the weeks to come.
It certainly seems that there are plenty of events to visit and activities to get involved in around our local area. Please try to find time to take advantage of all the hours of hard work and dedication put in by so many people who have been involved in organising such events, however small they may be, (the events, not the people!)
At last a hot spell and we’re already hearing of water shortages in certain areas. Returning from Manchester via the Woodhead Pass recently, it was a shock to see the reservoirs alongside the road virtually empty … and The Pennines are meant to be amongst the wettest parts of England!
It gets me wondering about the huge blue pipes dotted across our local patch waiting to go underground (eventually?) courtesy of Anglian Water. Where will the water come from and where will it go, as it passes beneath fields being irrigated?
And finally:
✦ Who’s the coolest guy in the hospital? The ultrasound guy. Who takes his place when he’s on holiday? The hip replacement guy, of course.
✦ According to the latest research, six out of seven dwarfs say they are not happy.
Enjoy the read (and the sunshine!)

A Death on Location
BY THE REVEREND RICHARD COLES
It’s spring 1990, and in Champton the whole village is aflutter as a glamorous Hollywood movie has taken over Lord de Floures’ Champton House as its set location. As the actors and extras hired from the village don their farthingales, gowns and crowns for a masque, set in the 1600s, a murder interrupts filming on set - and it’s an ingenious one.
Sceptred Isle
BY HELEN CARR
The death of Edward I in 1307 marked the beginning of a period of turmoil and change in England. The fourteenth century ushered in the beginning of the bloody Hundred Years’ War with France, a conflict with Scotland, famine in Northern Europe and the largest human catastrophe in known history, the Black Death. Through the epic drama of regicide, war, bubonic plague, religious antagonism, revolt and the end of a royal dynasty, this book tells the story of the fourteenth century via the lives of Edward II, Edward III and Richard II, and their own ideas about England and what it meant to wield power. Signed Copies.

Langtoft Valkyries Under -11 Girls Celebrate Sporting Award
Langtoft Football Club’s Under-11 girls’ team, the Langtoft Valkyries, were recently honoured at the Quickline Lincolnshire Women and Girls’ County Football League Awards, winning the ‘Most Sporting Team’ award.
The award, voted for by teams across the league, recognises the Valkyries’ commitment to fair play, team spirit, and positive conduct both on and off the pitch. It marks the first official accolade for the team, who were formed as part of the club’s growing youth setup. The awards event was held at Cleethorpes Beach Haven, where the players enjoyed a day at the seaside, traditional fish and chips, and a well-earned visit to the arcades. Coach Terry Cole said, “This award reflects everything we stand for at Langtoft - fun, development, and building confidence through football. We’re incredibly proud of what the girls have achieved.”
The recognition highlights the club’s ethos of creating a supportive and enjoyable environment for young players, with a focus on learning and growing as a team. It also celebrates the hard work and dedication off the pitch from the parents, senior leadership, club welfare team, and coaches, whose ongoing support helps no end.
Edenham Pupils Embrace Learning Beyond the Classroom
At Edenham, we believe that learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door—it flourishes in the world beyond it. Our children have been fortunate to enjoy a variety of enriching trips this year, each one sparking curiosity, building confidence, and creating joyful memories that last a lifetime.
Our oldest pupils recently joined Year 6 children from across the county for a special day at the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral. Meanwhile, our youngest learners had a wonderful time at Bramble Patch. This hands-on experience brought learning to life in the most delightful way—through play, discovery, and the simple joy of being outside.
We’re incredibly lucky to have Grimsthorpe Castle right on our doorstep. Our Key Stage 1 children have been learning all about plants and growth, and what better way to deepen that understanding than by getting their hands dirty alongside the castle’s gardeners?
Physical activity and teamwork are also at the heart of what we value. Our lower Key Stage 2 children had the chance to shine at the Mini Olympics in Grantham.
These experiences are more than just trips—they are joyful adventures that enrich our children’s education and help them grow in confidence, curiosity, and community spirit.
If you’d like to learn more about the opportunities we offer at Edenham, we’d love to hear from you. Please feel free to contact us on 01778 591207.

ABack to Flying?
erophobia” is an intense fear that is out of proportion to the actual danger, and particularly relevant to fears of flying. Most people will agree that flying is safe, yet frightening. They have a hard time reconciling their fear with safety statistics. Although we know our phobias are not logical, we cannot reason ourselves out of one. They can stop us from taking part in family holidays or put them off for years and years, thus interfering with work and social lives.
One important thing to note is that fear of flying is not always a single phobia, as many people who fear flying are also claustrophobic, or frightened of being locked in the plane and unable to choose when to get off, feeling out of control.
Our fears of flying have triggers, which are thoughts, images, sensations and memories to which we have become sensitized. A person who is sensitized to certain bodily feelings might fear turbulence or normal take-off and landing. And someone who fears heights might become terrified thinking about flying many miles above the ground.
Fear
of flying is split into three main groups; which one do you belong to?
1
Those who don’t fly or haven’t flown for more than five years despite the opportunity to do so.
2
Those who fly only when absolutely necessary, with extreme terror. 3
Those who fly when required, but with anxiety.
What’s behind the phobias and fear?
The common denominator for more than 90% of flight phobics is the fear that they will become overwhelmed with anxiety during the flight. People experience an unexpected panic while flying, and then they fear the terrifying symptoms will return during their next flight. These panics typically emerge between the ages of seventeen and thirty-four, around the time of a significant life change such as a birth, death, marriage, divorce, or graduation. That is why people with flying phobias often wonder why they had once been able to fly so comfortably. Very few fears of flying originate with a traumatic flight.
With the fear of flying, there is a huge component of anticipatory anxiety, or the fear experienced in anticipation of taking a flight. Any successful treatment will help fearful fliers manage anticipatory anxiety because many people avoid planning flights, or they just cancel them.
The good news is that your brain has an ability to learn and change; you are constantly learning. Changing and learning new habits such as being more relaxed and calmer can help overcome simple phobias very quickly.
Hypnotherapy communicates with the subconscious, filtering through how you want to be rather than how you currently are, taking back control.

1 WHY MAY I NEED TO BE VACCINATED?
If you’re about to travel outside of the UK, you may need to be vaccinated before you set off for your trip. The childhood vaccination programme in the UK protects you from a number of diseases, but you may need extra vaccinations or antimalarials if you’re planning on visiting certain parts of the world.
2 HOW CAN WE HELP?
Getting vaccinated can help prevent you from getting ill if you’re exposed to diseases which we don’t normally have in the UK. We can help you understand how to keep your risks low while abroad and help you work out which vaccinations and antimalarials you may want to consider depending on things like:
• Which regions you’ll be visiting
• What activities you’ll be doing
• Your age and general health
Some travel vaccinations may be needed several weeks before departure. Ideally you should see us six to eight weeks before travelling, but we may still be able to help if you’re leaving sooner, even days before you travel.

The Great Southwards Splurge of Bourne
by Brynley Heaven
Earlier
this year,
housebuilders
Barratt Redrow submitted an outline plan for yet another southern extension of the town. Far from creating a huge hoo-ha, these announcements now tend to be met with fatalistic acceptance, provided they do not encroach on nature reserves or “rain on any existing residential parade”.
As can be seen from the illustration, they plan to build on the wedge of countryside outside the by-pass, from Raymond Mays Way over to the Stamford Road. You can see allotments and a children’s play area, even the reinstatement of vanished hedgerows. There are “attenuation swales and SUDS” (sustainable drainage systems) which turn out to be what I still stubbornly call ‘Retention Ponds’. The hopeful developers are promising “a vibrant community”, which is pushing it a bit. These are very much down to residents to create, and no amount of promotional guff will do so.
It is easy to forget that Bourne was relatively compact until the late 20th century. An exhibition at the Red Hall in October 1999 introduced the idea of Elsea Park; the first new house appeared as recently as 2002. The great southward splurge of Bourne is arguably the price we pay for keeping Bourne Wood sacrosanct. It hems in any westward expansion and prevents it. Much of the outer eastern flank is earmarked for business uses (such as the huge new herb glasshouses), which constrains residential expansion in that direction too.
Forty years ago, I chaired a London Borough Planning Committee. In those days, we were “inner city”. Now the whole area is accurately called “expensive”. How times change! But it is useful experience. What leapt out at me from this new Barratt Redrow proposal was nothing suggested to fix or mitigate the very dangerous right turn on Stamford hill coming into Bourne from the Stamford direction, shortly after the Self-Storage complex. What they are pleased to call the “Spine Road” through the housing estate, emerges instead at a new junction, ignoring the existing ‘ghost exit’ on the bypass roundabout.
Hmm, this one requires a lot more thinking and a re-draft!
Summer Thoughts in Legal Land
WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD
The weather is hopefully on the mend as we all reach for our summer outfits.
Legally, things can crop up.
● We should take care when driving on holiday as sometimes weather can do strange things to drivers. Is it safe to overtake? If it is not, there are risks of accidents and offences under the Road Traffic Acts. Children will be playing, and we need to take more care. If someone else is driving your car, check the insurance requirements and your driving licence.
● Barbecues should not be taken to public places where there are increasing risks of accidents and fires. If an accident were to happen, serious offences could be committed.
● At home, be careful not to incur disputes with your neighbour. It’s perhaps best to invite them round and enjoy that drink together! Take
care that no noxious substances escape from your homes such as fumes from the barbecue or garden equipment. Keep the garden under control and especially check that no shrubs dangle over the boundary.
● With holidays, check the small print and that you are covered by ABTA in case something goes wrong. Get your travel insurance in place (our bodies do not respect the holiday season!) Make sure you have disclosed to the insurers all your relevant conditions. If something were to go wrong, you need to be sure you are covered.
● Check that all the family keeps safe. Avoid any risks of open-air swimming in old gravel pits and rivers were there are perils.
● Check that your pet is safe in your car and that they are not going to get into difficulty. There can be serious offences committed if something goes wrong, so keep car windows open if you leave the vehicle.

I had three sessions of the liposculpt and I could notice a difference even after the first session. The treatment has massively improved the condition and appearance of the skin on my stomach, something have always been conscious of after having two children. No matter how much I exercise, this area has never improved, however it now looks much better and the skin is much firmer and toned. Definitely recommend." Sarah

‘Glow-up’ Your Retirement with a Simple Mind-set Switch
Friendship group, Nene & Welland Oddfellows is inspiring local retirees to give their retirement a ‘glow-up’ by switching from a ‘To Do’ to a ‘To Be’ mind-set. Retirees shouldn’t miss out on living a more fulfilling and authentic life and its regular events are great ways to get a retirement that glows.
Dr Andy Cope has spent two decades studying the science of positive psychology and human flourishing. He explained: “Retirement is the perfect opportunity to shift our mind-set from ‘when’ to ‘now’. Too often, we spend our lives chasing goals, which means we can accidentally kick our happiness into the long grass.”
“With retirement, you can fall into the trap of only creating ‘To Do’ lists and they are often quite mundane tasks. But if you switch to asking yourself what you want ‘To Be’ today, it’s incredibly powerful and rewarding. Thinking about what kind of person you want to be gives you focus. For example, if you want to be a nice person, then you need to be kind, compassionate and present for those around you. If you want to be more adventurous, spend the day focusing on being curious and bold, and give new things a try.”
Branch Secretary for Nene & Welland Oddfellows, Karen Earth, added: “Retirement is your chance to re-invent, re-energise and start living life like you mean it. That means new friends, new adventures
and a new perspective. Our local friendship group is here to help you explore what’s possible in retirement. You’ll find friendly faces, interesting events, chances to volunteer, and group holidays to look forward to. There’s also wellbeing advice and plenty of opportunities to feel more connected in your community. No matter what you need to help you flourish, we can help you glow in retirement.”
Nene & Welland Oddfellows has a busy schedule of events planned for the summer. The group has suggested the following meetups as great tasters for any interested retirees. There is a chocolate taste testing and talk on July 15th at 11am (£7 for non-members) and a Coffee Morning (donation) on August 31st at 11am, both at Oddfellows Hall, 57 Church Street, Market Deeping. PE6 8AN. There is also an Alpaca Meet and Greet in Crowland on August 16th at 10:30am for £6 per person.

LOCAL TEAMS CLUB TOGETHER TO MAKE THE WHEEL TURN
Two local teams, Bourne Town Harriers and Bourne Wheelers, came together to complete the Peterborough Green Wheel Relay on Sunday June 1st. Recent rule changes have necessitated that a support cyclist is required to follow runners with a first aid kit and spare water supplies on all stages. The cyclist is also there for safety reasons, as some of the stages are run on public roads.
RUNNING AND ATHLETICS
Without support cyclists, the team would be unable to participate, so the call went out to Bourne Wheelers to see if they were able to assist, and they were only too happy to help. Two Bourne Wheelers riders were available, with one supporting the first half of the race and the other the second half.
The Green Wheel Relay is a seven-stage running race, starting and finishing at the athletics arena, Bishops Road, Peterborough. The total distance is fifty miles and follows the outline of the Green Wheel cycle route which provides a continuous sustainable route around the city of Peterborough. Opening in 2000, it was one of the first large-scale projects delivered by Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT). Although aimed at cyclists, the route is equally good for running.
The race has been designed specifically as a 'Team' event, with the intention that members of the team (or non-runners) support each other. Whilst instructions for each stage are prepared, the course itself is unmarshalled, other than at the changeover points where times are recorded.
This puts the emphasis on the runners to learn and navigate the route. This year was particularly challenging as, due to road closures, there were some last-minute route alterations which caused some confusion!
The race is organised with staggered start times, based on the team’s estimated duration, so that the majority of teams finish within a short time frame at around 4 pm. This makes for a great spectacle at the finish as many of the previous stage runners join the last runner, as they complete the race with a final lap of the stadium track.
Bourne Town Harriers entered a mixed ability team which came fifteenth overall. Team tactics were later discussed at the Sugar Mill in Bourne, where non-members were invited to join a social evening so they could find out more about the club and hear about the activities from earlier in the day.
Bourne Town Harriers run training sessions for all ages and abilities. Senior training sessions take place on a Tuesday evening with Junior sessions (9 - 16 yrs) on a Friday. More details can be found at www.bournetownharriers.org.
Bourne Wheelers have club ride-outs and events for beginners to more experienced riders. More details can be found at www.bournewheelers.co.uk.
Why It Pays to Plan Now
Inheritance Tax and the Soaring £9 Billion Bill
For the first time ever, the UK government’s Inheritance Tax (IHT) take has breached the £9 billion mark. That’s £9 billion taken from families, much of it avoidable with the right planning, and handed over to HMRC. And with sweeping rule changes on the horizon, particularly affecting business relief in 2026 and pensions in 2027, there’s never been a more important time to act.
Inheritance Tax has always been a somewhat stealthy levy. With the nil-rate band frozen at £325,000 since 2009 and rising property prices pulling more estates above the threshold, more and more ordinary families are being dragged into the IHT net. And let’s be clear: the 40% tax rate on anything above your allowances is no small matter.
Many people assume it’s something to “deal with later”. But effective IHT planning isn’t something you can do in the final months of life. It’s something you start years in advance. The sooner you start, the more options you have.
Take lifetime gifting. If you survive seven years after making a gift, it’s usually outside of your estate for IHT purposes. Leave it too late, and that gift may be dragged back into your estate. Or consider the residence nil-rate band, a valuable £175,000
allowance per person, but only available if your estate is structured correctly. A few missteps here, and your family could end up paying tens of thousands of pounds in tax unnecessarily.
Business owners also need to sit up and take notice. From 2026, the government is proposing serious changes to Business Relief, which currently offers up to 100% relief on qualifying assets. The rules on what qualifies and how long you must have owned it, together with who owns the assets, will become significantly stricter. And for those relying on pensions as a tax-free legacy, the planned overhaul in 2027 will reduce their IHT efficiency too.
We often say that IHT planning is like gardening: the earlier you plant the seeds, the more time they have to grow—and the fewer weeds you’ll need to pull later on.
At W & P Legal, we specialise in helping individuals and families navigate the complexities of estate and tax planning. Whether you’re a homeowner, business owner, or simply want to ensure your wealth passes to the right people, we can help you take action now—before the rules change.
Don’t wait until it’s too late. Contact W & P Legal today to start your Inheritance Tax planning the right way. Your family will thank you. Call today 01778 252301 – www.wplegal.co.uk .

Exton Park Brut (11.5% vol) Reserve Blend is produced utilising Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grape varieties (60% and 40% respectively) to a great advantage.
ByTrevorLangley
Bottle-aged, for at least three years, this production has countless devotees. A fruity freshness is most evident, for this very popular wine.
Exton Park Blanc De Noirs (11.5% vol) Reserve Blend uses 100% Pinot Noir grapes in its production. With tropical fruits on the bouquet and mouthfeel, the palate’s delight continues through, for a most impressive finish.
Exton Park Rosé (11.5% vol) Reserve Blend has 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Pinot Meunier grapes in its make-up. An excellent pink rose colour, plus flavour, give this wine the recognition and respect that are justifiably deserved. Delicately balanced and with tropical fruit overtones, this delectation adds colour to any dining occasion too.
These are just some of the impressive wines from Exton Park vineyard. Fine perlages, plus huge enjoyment are further delights of these wines. Perfect for pre-dining, on their own and for accompanying foods, I found these Exton Park vineyard productions to be attractively presented and a most enjoyable introduction to their wines. I look forward, absolutely, to furthering my tastes and desires. Please visit the very informative website for all details and information. Highly recommended.

THE GARDEN KITCHEN OPERATES ALONGSIDE OUR GRIFFIN CLASSIC & À LA CARTE MENU
12-6 FRIDAY, SATURDAY
12-4 SUNDAY
Our resident restaurant reviewer, Claire Saberton has been a regular visitor to Gurkha 91 Nepalese restaurant on Bourne’s North Street for several years. Every time, she finds the welcome so warm and so it was on Tuesday June 17th when the town was actually basking in high temperatures. The air conditioned, tastefully decorated inside, however, meant it would be a very comfortable experience inside the restaurant.
Traditional Nepalese clothes worn by the smiling staff along with images of some of their home country on the walls certainly created an authentic feel, whilst the menu is packed with a range of traditional Nepalese dishes.
Claire describes their evening’s experience... a full 5 Star show!
“The poppadoms on arrival were crisp, not greasy, and the chutneys were very fresh and not spicy. We were very excited for starters:
◆ Momo - minced lamb dumplings were soft, full of flavour, fresh, perfect heat and delicious.
◆ Chilli Fish - a particular favourite of mine; scrumptiously sweet, with subtle heat which allows the flavour of the fish to come through, served with charred peppers and onion. I could eat this daily!
◆ Salmon Tikka - charred on the outside and cooked to perfection, soft and moist, with the flavour flowing all the way through – divine!
◆ Lamb Cutlet - marinated in yoghurt and spices, succulent, soft and yummy.
The atmosphere was just so relaxing, and we loved the traditional music in the background. We were so full after the mouth-watering starters that we opted for small main courses, and they were happy to offer smaller portions.
The Tandoori King Prawns, sizzling on the plate, were sweet and juicy whilst the Butter Chicken was creamy and buttery; not spicy, but full of flavour and it goes very well with Jeera rice. I would recommend this dish to anyone who doesn’t like hot spice.
We had to forgo the delicious dessert menu, from which I would have chosen Midnight Mint Ice Cream, had I not been so full!
A super tasty de-caff coffee concluded a truly wonderful meal instead! The extensive drinks menu includes a selection of cocktails and a wine list to suit everyone; the draught Cobra was chilled to perfection.
Overall, the Gurkha 91 provides good value for money, and is well worth a visit for a special celebration, for a treat night, or for a take-away. Bhim and his team are ready to welcome you to their relaxed dining experience; they even let me into the kitchen! With such lovely surroundings, tasty food and such a friendly staff, I can’t wait to go back.”
Competition Time: Win Tickets to Wistow Maze
Two hundred years ago, on September 27th1825, the world’s first public railway, between Stockton and Darlington, was opened. Designed by George Stephenson (known as the ‘Father of Railways’), the Locomotion No.1 was the first steam locomotive to carry passengers on a public railway.
To mark this anniversary of the modern railway, Leicestershire's famous Wistow Maze has been designed this year in the shape of a steam train. The maze is offering visitors an opportunity to celebrate this historic milestone, whilst exercising both mind and body along the way.
The giant eight-acre maize maze has a fun Quiz Trail hidden amongst three miles of pathways, with highlevel bridges and towers giving stunning panoramic views. Visitors can seek out twelve quiz boards, which highlight how far transport has evolved over the years. They can also enjoy a variety of mini mazes and games in the ‘Activity
Funyard’, which includes a space-hopper track, hoopla, beanbag throwing and a football shooting game.
Across the road is the Wistow Rural Centre with its cafe, garden centre, art gallery, model village and numerous shops, making it a great day out for all ages.
Open from 10am to 6pm: July 21st - August 31st(daily), then weekendsonly until September 14th.

Words from the New Mayor
Councillor
Colin Pattison
I am extremely honoured and privileged to have recently become the Mayor of Bourne and I thank my fellow councillors for putting their trust in me once more.
Iwould like to pay my respect to my predecessor, Councillor Helen Crawford who not only led and chaired the council brilliantly but also represented the town at many events. Since taking over on May 27th, it has been a busy start. In early June I formally opened the new outdoor exercise equipment on Dyke playing field along with my colleague, Councillor Les Panrucker. I hope this community asset is well used and looked after. I certainly enjoyed being put through my paces as we dodged the showers.
I also attended a Monday evening session on our Recreation Ground at the kind request of Bourne Wheelers and Brian Moran, to watch their 7 to 12-year-old age group go through their paces. Thank you for the invitation, it was wonderful to witness such energy and enthusiasm with everybody inclusive and involved.
Next up, Fiona and I were invited to the Corn Exchange by the Bourne Motor Racing Club committee to attend the tribute and celebration of the life of Dick Salmon, the former BRM mechanic and engineer. This was originally meant to be an evening to celebrate Dick’s 100th birthday but sadly he passed away a few weeks before this milestone. I was asked to say a few words on Dick’s standing within Bourne and the area – a proud moment to be able to pay respect on behalf of Bourne and our parish to a truly remarkable man.
On June 14th, we thoroughly enjoyed the Picnic in the Park /BRM 75th Anniversary event. What an incredible day, eventually blessed with glorious sunshine and it was great to see so many families out enjoying the day. I must say a huge thank you to each and every organiser, volunteer, steward and helper involved in making a great day, too many to list individually. We must also thank Nick Owen /BRM, Hall and Hall and the Lincs MG Owners Club; we had a great time judging all the cars behind the Red Hall. One last thank you to the Bourne Events Team and Town Council for all their hard work; these events don’t just happen!
Finally, my chosen charities for the forthcoming year are Don’t Lose Hope and the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance. I aim to put on some charity fund-raising events, so please keep an eye out for those and support if you can.
Regards and for the love of Bourne. Colin.
Bourne United Charities
Massive Thanks for Allowing “Picnic in
the
Park” on the Wellhead Park
Picnic in the Park was held on the Wellhead Park on Saturday June 14th, and thank you to whoever ordered the fantastic weather! It was opened by our Town Crier (Seamus Walker) and recently elected Town Mayor (Councillor Colin Pattison). There was a stage with a full day of entertainment, free face painting (courtesy of one of our sponsors), food stalls, traders, an inflatable assault course, and vintage ride/stalls. SKDC had their ‘Great Big Green Week’ team and children (young and old) had a chance to sit in the cab of a refuse collection vehicle (RCV). Bourne Wheelers ran mini ‘Go-Ride’ sessions too.
BRM had a display of cars in the Corn Exchange car park, complemented by a film in the Corn Exchange of their history. Baldocks Mill opened for the day and had a record 300+ people through their door. Lincolnshire MG Car Club had a display
of classic cars behind the Red Hall. The Fire Station opened their doors so that people could look around a fire engine and their station. Delaine Buses ran a ‘Heritage bus’ for the day from the town centre to their Spalding Road Museum.
This year’s event was the best attended, but of course none of this would have been made possible without Bourne United Charities allowing us to use the Wellhead for the day, so a massive thank you to them and to the people of Bourne and district who turned up and made the day a roaring success.
Also, to the team of volunteers who were onsite from 6:30am until the close, plus the months of planning ensuring the event went ahead. And, of course, to our sponsors: Hegarty (who sponsored Lincs 66 Face Painting), Warners, JJ Mac, Bourne Skip Hire, Roadphone NRB, and Lincolnshire 4x4 (who provided marshalling and first aid).
A big thank you to our sponsors...
Picnic In The Park
July is generally a warm, dry month and you will need to make sure that you keep the crops watered frequently as sporadic watering can cause several problems: flowers may fall, skins split, fruits may not form, and plants may bolt. Putting mulch around the plants can help conserve the moisture.
Another problem is pests:
• Check for blackfly on broad beans, runner beans, beetroot and apply a spray as soon as you see them. There are several products on the market, both organic and non-organic.
• Inspect cabbage leaves for eggs or caterpillars and squash them or spray.
• Spray tomatoes and potatoes against blight and dig up any rogue potato plants from last year as they may be harbouring disease. Although it is getting late, there are still a few crops that can be planted:
• Lettuce, rocket and a variety of salad leaves
– succession sow for an ongoing supply in the autumn.
• Fast growing varieties of peas, beetroot and carrots.
• Florence fennel.
• Space may be created by lifting onions, garlic and early potatoes; you can use this space to plant out Brussels sprouts, cabbages and cauliflower that you have grown from seed.
• Transplant leeks into their final growing position. Have you tried growing edible flowers in amongst the vegetables? Not only do they provide colour in cooking but also attract
beneficial insects. Examples of flowers to grow are borage, nasturtium, viola, chives, lavender, and marigold.
A few jobs for this month include:
• When climbing beans have reached the top of the canes, pinch out the growing tip.
• Strawberries will finish fruiting so tidy up old foliage and cut off runners or use them to produce new plants.
• Earth up brassicas to give them a firm hold in the soil and give them a top-dressing of nitrogenous fertilizer or an organic liquid feed.
• Cover cauliflower heads with the leaves to prevent them from going yellow.
• Lift garlic, onions and shallots: loosen the soil around the roots then choose a dry spell to lift them, lay them on the ground to dry out in the sun: this should help prolong their storage life.
• Nip off the side shoots of your tomatoes; they appear in the “v” between leaf stems and main stems, and when there are four or five trusses, pinch out the growing tip of the plant to allow the fruit to ripen. Water them with a liquid feed as soon as the first fruits are formed. Likewise for peppers.
• Ensure that peas and brassicas are netted to keep off the pigeons.
• Lift early potatoes. What better than freshly dug potatoes with mint, butter and a summery salad?
• Plant potatoes ready for Christmas; garden centres usually stock the winter varieties. Happy harvesting!
Garlics,
Yes you can! Many landlords believe that to change agents you must wait until the end of an existing tenancy, which is not the case.
A Tenancy Agreement is a contract between the Landlord and the Tenant, and changing agent does not affect the legal rights of either.
If your letting agent is not delivering, give them written notice that you would like to leave, and we’ll take it from there.

When Financial Planning Turns into Real Life Moments
Some of the best messages I receive from clients aren’t just words, they come with a photo - a snapshot from the beach; a proud smile on a boat deck; or even a shiny new Porsche parked outside their home!
These aren’t just pictures though. They are proof that a financial plan isn’t just about numbers on a spreadsheet. It’s about real life, full of experiences that people have dreamed of.
Here’s a WhatsApp message I received recently from a wonderful client who had dreamed of buying a holiday home in Spain…
It’s the Moment the Plan Becomes Real
For many approaching retirement, the goal isn’t just to grow wealth; it’s to use that wealth to enjoy life. Whether that means travelling more, trying new hobbies, or even treating yourself with something special, these moments are the true reward for years of careful planning.
Rob Schwarz
More Than Just Numbers
Financial planning isn’t just about growing a portfolio; it’s about crafting a lifestyle you want to live. It’s about helping you spend with confidence and peace of mind, knowing your plan can support the life you envision. And when those moments arrive - whether a getaway, a special purchase, or simply more quality time - they mean more than any spreadsheet ever could.
What Next
When clients send me messages like, “Thanks - we’re doing it!”, it reminds me why thoughtful financial planning matters. These moments of joy and freedom don’t come by chance; they come from careful modelling, strategic planning, and building the confidence that the future is secure.
Financial planning isn’t just about growing a portfolio; it’s about crafting a lifestyle you want to live

Protect Your Garden from Green-fingered Thieves this Summer
By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades
More and more of us are choosing to relax, entertain and generally spend time in our outdoor space; an estimated 27 million of us engage in gardening as a hobby. There’s no doubt that the pandemic and lockdowns placed greater importance than ever on people enjoying their gardens for their mental and physical wellbeing.
With the additional investment of decorative lighting, ornaments, garden gadgets, furniture and even hot tubs and bars, our gardens and their contents are becoming more attractive to thieves, as outdoor spaces become an extension of our home.
Nine out of ten household thefts occur in the garden with the most common target items being bicycles, garden tools, plants/shrubs, garden gnomes and other ornaments, delivery packages, hanging baskets, children’s toys, outdoor furniture, and solar lights. So, think about the value and security of your outdoor possessions in the same way you view those inside the home.
Tips to help provide security and protection:
• Get a reputable locksmith to secure gates and sheds (particularly if a shed contains expensive garden tools/machinery or bikes).
• Lock away ladders or anything which could be used to gain entry to your home.
• CCTV will allow you to view your garden and any unwelcomed activity from your home.
• Install some sensory/outdoor lighting.
• Alarm the garage to provide additional security or think about installing garage roller shutter doors.
• If your fencing is flimsy, broken panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in some new and improved fencing or panels.
• Use a security pen to mark valuable items, like garden furniture, ornaments or trampolines, with your postcode.
• Consider ‘defensive planting’ like prickly hedges or
• Join a local Neighbourhood Watch Group. When thinking about having any security, garden maintenance or crime prevention work carried out in your home and/or garden, always use someone reputable and trustworthy. Bourne Dog Rescue Charity Receives Donation
Local friendship group, Nene and Welland Oddfellows has handed over £3,250 to Three Counties Dog Rescue to help the charity meet the costs of vet bills. Janice Bedford, outgoing Chairperson of the not-for-profit society, presented the cheque to representatives of the Rescue on May 13th at Oddfellows Hall on Church Street, Market Deeping.
Each year, the group’s Chairperson chooses a charity to raise money for. Janice said, “Without Three Counties Dog Rescue, many of these poor animals would not get the care and attention they need when they are in the most desperate circumstances, through no fault of their own.”
Made up of around four hundred, mostly older and retired, local members, Nene and Welland Oddfellows raised the total through a number of events, including raffles, stalls at local events and one member, Janice’s husband and incoming Chairperson Barry Bedford, doing a ‘sponsored slim’ which raised over £700!
Nene and Welland Oddfellows is one of ninety-six branches that make up the Oddfellows’ nationwide network, which is one of the oldest and largest of its kind in the UK. Anyone is welcome to join the Society, which aims to improve its members’ lives through friendship and support. It hosts a range of affordable and accessible events locally, and Oddfellows members can access a variety of benefits including care and welfare support and a travel club. There are also opportunities to volunteer and take part in fundraising initiatives.

Witham Hall School’s annual Fun Run was once again a huge success, bringing together families, pupils, and staff for an afternoon full of energy, sunshine, and generosity.
Organised by the Friends of Witham, this much-anticipated event raised vital funds for The Willoughby Foundation - an academy in Bourne that supports children with complex Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
The school grounds buzzed with excitement and a lively DJ soundtrack, as runners ran toward a wet or dry finish line, with spectators waiting, armed with water pistols! The JustGiving page is still open - so please support this wonderful cause!

REVITALISE YOUR KITCHEN WITH NEXT-GEN FINISHES
The National Lottery Heritage Fund Awards Development Grant for Wake House
Bourne Arts and Community Trust’s trustees are delighted to announce that they have been awarded £140,000 by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Want to give your kitchen a makeover, but don’t want the stress, upheaval, and cost of a major renovation? Then look no further than Next-Gen Finishes.
The grant has two purposes:
1To fund preparations for the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Frederick Worth (who was born in Wake House in October 1825 and who is known as “The Father of Haute Couture”) and
The Peterborough-based business specialises in professional kitchen resprays, furniture painting, and internal decorating innovations, including wallpaper hanging and digital mural installation.
2
To fund preparations for both the completion of the restoration of Wake House and significant accessibility improvements to help wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs (a further application will be needed for funding to carry out the restoration and improvement work).
It is run by Coates-born Grant Roberts (46), who has more than twenty-five years’ experience, and is City & Guilds assured in airless spray painting, fitted furniture renovation, fine finish spraying, and digital mural installation. He said: “We offer a wide range of services but are specialising more and more on kitchen resprays that can give our customers’ kitchens a great new look with revitalised doors and units. We pick up a lot of business in the Whittlesey, Peterborough and Stamford areas and plan to add granite spraying to the services we can provide to give our customers even more choice.”
For kitchen resprays, the company offers a thorough process: removing all doors and drawer faces for workshop treatment, degreasing and sanding surfaces, prior to applying paints. The result is a flawless, durable finish backed by a five-year workmanship guarantee.
• Cost-effective: a kitchen respray can save you up to eighty percent compared to the cost of a full replacement.
BACT runs Wake House as a facility for the benefit of the community, providing space for many local charities and important support groups. The Trustees are very grateful to The National Lottery Heritage Fund and to National Lottery players for this grant which will directly benefit the people of our area.
• Eco-friendly: by respraying your existing cabinets, you reduce waste and your environmental footprint.
• Durable: when it comes to selecting the right paint for your kitchen cupboards, quality and durability really matters.
Martin Siddle, the Trust’s Chair, said, “The grant will enable us to make important improvements to the building and enable many more people to learn about the extraordinary and fascinating beginnings of the very first international high fashion brand.”
• Customisable: the company offers a wide range of colours and finishes to match your style and vision.

“LDC in The Movies”
Cresset Showcase Celebrates a Decade of Dance
To hear that Bourne’s LDC dancers performed magnificently in front of another large audience came as no huge surprise to me – what stunned me though was that it is now ten years since a very enthusiastic and ambitious young lady, Lauren Willis, started out on her journey to fulfil a childhood dream. That dream, to have her own dance studio and provide opportunities for youngsters in the Bourne area to share her own love of “all things dance”, has clearly been realised.
The Cresset in Peterborough was the venue for LDC’s latest showcase performance, “LDC in The Movies”, on May 24th and 25th. “From enchanting lyrical routines to high-energy commercial numbers, this show has it all! Don’t miss the chance to be
amazed by our dancers, ranging from ages 3 to 18. Experience the magic and excitement as our talented dancers bring your favourite movies to life on stage” were the words used to herald in the show.
Lauren’s take on the two performances:
“I am unbelievably proud of all our dancers who lit up the incredible Cresset stage for our latest showcase. Words honestly can’t express how proud I am of what we created. This show went above and beyond anything we could have ever imagined, and it was without a doubt our biggest showcase to date. I feel so incredibly lucky to be surrounded by the most amazing LDC Dance family. I couldn’t ask for more!”
