Discovering Bourne issue 166, June 2025

Welcome to your June issue...

The English weather certainly knows how to confuse us all. We’re not long out of a period of extremes with torrential rains and flooding, and now we’re basking in glorious sunshine in the driest spring in years! Guess what … heavy rain is forecast, so that must mean it’s nearly summer! Whatever the weather brings, I’m sure you’ll find plenty to find informative, interesting and useful in this issue of your “favourite freebie” magazine.

Here’s hoping we may all have a super al fresco month, with so much happening in our local towns and villages. Judging by how the recent VE80 Celebrations went, we seem to be able to put together some memorable moments that serve to bring our communities together. Long may that continue!

A reminder that on Sunday, June 15th we all have the opportunity to shower our loved ones with goodies on Father’s Day. Big love to my husband, Chris, dad Bill and father-in-law Rich.

Bourne’s motor racing heritage will be clearly in the spotlight on Saturday June 14th with our annual Picnic in the Park which will include the homecoming of Graham Hill’s famous “Old Faithful” F1 racing car. Such an ironic twist therefore that Dick Salmon, former BRM engineer and author of two magnificent books about his love for the BRM and for Raymond Mays should be absent from the celebrations, having sadly passed away just weeks away from the event and a few months before his 100th birthday.

A reminder that June 15th is Father’s Day - that annual opportunity to give him/me some respite from kitchen and garden duties and shower him/me with treats! And finally:

✦ Good news for all fans of the Mr Men books with two new titles –one is a useless decorator called Mr Bit and the other is his mate, a hopeless footballer called Mr Sitter.

✦ Two fish in a tank – one says, “How do you drive this thing?” Enjoy the read!

Never Flinch

A thrilling new novel with intertwining storylines - one about a killer on a diabolical revenge mission, and another about a vigilante targeting a feminist celebrity speaker. Featuring a riveting cast of characters, both old and new, including the beloved Holly Gibney, world-famous gospel singer Sista Bessie and an unforgettable villain addicted to murder, these twinned narratives converge in a chilling and spectacular conclusion. Thrilling and outrageously engrossing, this is one of King’s richest and most propulsive novels.

Sylviane Rochas arrives in Marseille. Charming her way into a job as a waitress in a local bistro, she knows that she is not here to stay. As she discovers the joy of cooking, with the addition of bittersweet chocolate spices, she realises that it possesses its own magic in this town full of secrets. Yet Vianne will never forget her mother’s warning: there is danger in revealing the true desires of those around her - she must flee these cobbled streets before it’s too late... 19 North Street, Bourne, PE10 9AE

Vianne

The prequel to “Chocolat”, this is the long-awaited story of Vianne, which begins six years before she opens her scandalous chocolaterie in the small French village of Lansquenet.

Fenland Nature

This book showcases the natural history and landscape of the Fens, describing the geology and geography across the Fenland Basin, and the human relationship with the landscape, from Mesolithic hunters to modern farming on an industrial scale. With only a fraction of the Fens now left, “Fenland Nature” celebrates the breadth of wildlife still to be found in the region, from vast flocks of visiting wildfowl to rare and specialised plants and insects. The book concludes by contemplating an uncertain future where there are possibilities for a sustainable agricultural industry alongside increasing biodiversity.

Silverborn: The Mystery of Morrigan Crow

A spellbinding tale of magic and mystery in this thrilling new instalment of the Nevermoor series, perfect for all adventurous young readers. When Morrigan Crow is invited into the wealthy Silver District, she discovers a world of extravagance and a family

mystery she’s eager to unravel. She could never imagine where it will lead: a white wedding, a golden dragon and a red pool of blood. Embroiled in suspicion and danger, Morrigan leaps headfirst into a murder investigation, while also grappling with her evergrowing Wundersmith powers.

June is one of the busiest months, with crops to plant, sow and harvest, weeding, watering, feeding, getting rid of pests –the list seems never-ending

IUnfortunately, we have had very little rain of late, and it does mean extra work in keeping seedlings, new planting and fruit trees wellwatered. Don’t just lightly sprinkle daily, as roots will be shallow and you will encourage the slugs. Wait until the soil is dry a few inches below the surface and water thoroughly; this should last for several days. Mulching around plants not only helps retain water but also helps supress weeds – apply to damp soil, a good couple of inches thick.

Other jobs:

Brassicas, leeks and tomato plants that were started off indoors can be moved to their final growing position; harden them off first. Bring them outdoors but still potted, take them back inside at night for a few nights before planting them out so that they become acclimatised.

Thinning and planting out to final positions will start to overtake sowing as the main activity. However, you can continue to sow quick growing salad crops every few weeks for a continuous supply. Utilising the space between slower growing crops will maximise your use of growing space. With the warmer weather and plenty of food available, the garden pests appear. They can have a devastating effect on crops and with the latest concerns over chemical pest control, an interesting alternative is using food-grade diatomaceous earth, good for slugs and other pests as it dehydrates them.

• Plant out vegetables that you have grown from seed but make sure you harden them off before planting out in their final position.

• Sweetcorn can be planted out and, as it is self-pollinating, it is better sown closely in a block. Mark out a square or rectangle and plant at about 35-40cm (14-18inches) apart in each direction.

• Earth up potatoes and, towards the end of the month, harvest earlies.

• Protect strawberries by mulching around them with straw to keep mud splashes off and keep birds off your crop by covering with netting.

• Cut down broad beans just above the surface and use for compost but leave the roots in the ground as a useful source of nitrogen.

• Feed tomatoes with a high potash feed.

• Once you are sure that frosts are over, you can plant out the more tender crops such as aubergines, peppers, chillies, courgettes, marrows and squashes.

• Succession sow beetroot, salad crops, carrots.

• Sew Florence fennel.

• In June, apples have what is called “June Drop” where the tree gets rid of excess fruit. If the branches are still overcrowded, it is worth thinning them out.

• After you have picked the last of the rhubarb, give them a good feed of well-rotted manure mixed with compost or Growmore so that they can build up strength for next year.

Happy planting!

Financial Planning Is All About Trade-Offs

As we approach retirement, it’s natural to want a plan that gives us everything: security, flexibility, tax efficiency, and peace of mind. But you can’t have it all - at least not without giving something up.

That’s not a flaw in the system. It’s just how financial planning works. And understanding that can help you make better, more confident decisions about your future.

Every Option Comes with a Trade-Off

The truth is, nearly every financial decision comes with pros and cons. Here are a few common examples:

● Pensions offer generous tax relief today - but you’ll need to wait until later in life to access those funds.

● Gifting money to loved ones now can reduce the impact of Inheritance Tax - but it also means letting go of control over that money.

The Real Value Is in the Balance

The real art of financial planning isn’t about finding a perfect solution; it’s about crafting a plan that strikes the right balance for you. That means blending the benefits and drawbacks in a way that fits your personal goals, comfort level, and lifestyle.

The real art of financial planning isn’t about finding a perfect solution; it’s about crafting a plan that strikes the right balance for you.

● Flexibility in how you draw your retirement income gives you more freedom - but it may come with fewer guarantees or protections.

None of these choices are “right” or “wrong”they’re just different tools, and each comes with its own set of trade-offs.

This is where a bespoke financial plan makes all the difference. It’s not a generic, one-size-fits-all product. It’s a thoughtful, tailored strategy built around your unique situation, values, and vision for life after work.

Build a Plan That Works for You

If you’re thinking about how best to balance the trade-offs ahead of your retirement, we’re here to help. It starts with an open conversation - no jargon, no pressurejust clarity about what’s possible.

Book your FREE introductory meeting by scanning the QR code below. Let’s talk about the compromises that feel right for you and start building a future you feel good about.

* A pension is a long-term investment not normally accessible until 55 (57 from April 2028). The value of your investment (and any income from them) can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you invested.

Bourne Institute, 63 West Street

Founded in 1896 to promote a “judicious balance” between self-improvement and recreation, the Bourne Institute with 173 paid-up members, provided for “healthy recreation, education and intellectual improvement”. Sub-committees organised billiards, games, debates, music and ran a library room.

They leased, then later bought, a distinctive High Victorian frontage on West Street, the fine work of a local builder, Thomas Hinson, which formerly belonged to John Gibson, serving as his house with grain store at the rear. These premises survive today as The Pyramid Club. The barley motifs you can see in stone by the front door still recall this history. The grain store also saw service as an indoor shooting range.

By 1899, women were allowed in their own right. The Stamford Mercury reports: “A very pleasant ‘debate social’ took place in the Music Room of the Institute. The room was artistically decorated and a capital spread of good things provided by the ladies … songs were contributed by Misses Grummitt, Lansdown and Mr Lansdown, Mr A E K Wherry being accompanist. A glee was beautifully rendered by Mrs Eason...

a dualogue, ‘Shattered Nerves’, was very cleverly given by Miss Bell and Miss Gibson.”

Anyone misbehaving was hauled before the Committee of members, where they could be suspended for a period (three months dished out for “unacceptable behaviour in the Reading Room”) or banished. For many years throughout the last century, Bourne Library was housed in this building before a new purpose-built library was opened next to the Fire Station, near to the Red Hall, off South Street, (now the Salvation Army Community Furniture Shop). A more recent move saw the library services move yet again into Bourne town centre. It is now known as the South Kesteven Community Point and Library and is located at the Corn Exchange.

When I came to Bourne, the Pyramid Club sign put me in mind of ancient Egypt. We can’t beat the Freemasons Hall in Boston, however, for warming to that theme.

Real Egyptian fantasy, the Freemasons Hall in Boston, Lincolnshire. Note the hieroglyphics on the pillars. Based on the Temple of Dendur which was originally built by the Romans in the style of Ancient Egypt, then dismantled for the Aswan Dam, and now preserved in Metropolitan Museum, New York.

What an amazing choice!

THOUGHTS FROM A DON'T LOSE HOPE COUNSELLOR

“It’s not very often you get the chance to be part of something truly life-changing for so many people."

Ifirst became aware of the amazing work of the charity, Don’t Lose Hope in Bourne, just over a year ago when I became one of their counsellors. The charity provides counselling to anyone over the age of four who is unable to afford private counselling, or who has fallen into the gap of NHS waiting lists, and the lack of mental health support services. But they also do SO much more!

I have personally seen the life-saving, life-changing impact that the wide range of support services DLH offers, can have on individuals who often really have nowhere else to turn. Don’t Lose Hope have created a very special community, dedicated to helping others. It has made an enormous difference to so many people who are struggling with life, young and old.

It’s not just the clients and customers who are changed by Don’t Lose Hope though. The community ethos of helping others also extends way beyond the charity and its helpers. It sets an example, changing the culture of the local community for the better.

Funds are raised through their café, gift shop and donations, with the help of an army of volunteers. Counsellors are qualified and registered, trained in both Person Centred and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, many

with specialisms in working with children. Qualified counsellors are paid £20 a session by the charity.

As well as around two hundred hours of counselling sessions provided every week, the café is a community hub for providing more informal support and a listening ear for people, as well as a venue for a variety of regular dedicated sessions for bereavement groups, young people, victims of domestic abuse, families of those affected by abuse, projects out in the community are also run, including their ‘Runaway Theatre’ – a free youth theatre that supports around fifteen children every week who are struggling with social anxiety.

In addition to all of this, the charity runs a Community Garden and Shed for all, which has been a lifeline for many, with a daily schedule of activities. Men often struggle in silence, and the Community Garden has become a popular place for men to find friendship and support for their mental health in a space that is more accessible, with dedicated “menonly” times. It also provides a therapeutic and wonderful space for the whole community.

I love being a part of the much-needed service that is provided by Don’t Lose Hope. I very much hope that you can help.” Jenna

Did you know that you can donate by scanning the QR code.

You can also set up a Direct Debit to the charity to help them continue to provide their services, in particular supporting the young people through their counselling journey? You can donate through their just giving page and even set up a monthly donation.

For more information about donations, please visit www.dontlosehope.co.uk/ donate or pop in to the garden, shop or cafe and have a chat.

Don’t Let Your Dream Holiday Become a Nightmare

Ready for a dream break or a summer getaway? Beware! Holidaymakers are being urged to do their research before booking an online break, as new data reveals victims lost a total of almost £11.2 million to holiday fraud last year, an average loss per victim of £1844! The warning comes from Action Fraud, the national fraud and cybercrime reporting service.

Here’s how to protect yourself from holiday fraud:

• Do some research first to check that the company is legitimate. Use consumer websites, or reviews from people (or organisations) that you trust.

• Look for the ABTA, ABTOT or ATOL logos on the company’s website.

• Use a credit card for payments (if you have one). Many of these protect online purchases as part of the Consumer Credit Act.

• Only provide the required details at the checkout. When making your payment, only fill in the mandatory details (often marked with an asterisk) such as your address.

Meanwhile, don’t forget to add home security and property protection to your checklist. Simple security measures will help make the home less attractive to thieves, not only offering peace of mind, but will mean your happy holiday won’t turn into a home-coming heartache.

While you're away:

• Consider getting a relative, friend or neighbour to park on your drive if you have one, open and close the curtains, collect the post from the mat and water the garden.

• Be mindful of what you write or photos you share on social media which could identify you as being away on holiday.

• Ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property and leave a contact number so they can get in contact with you if anything happens.

Prevention is always better than cure and now is a great time to act on installing or upgrading any CCTV security / lighting or alarm systems – or even changing the locks.

Visit www.safelocaltrades.com for all the details of our reliable and reputable security professionals, including alarm fitters and locksmith.

If you suspect you’ve been misled or had a poor-quality removal, act now! Contact us for a FREE survey and expert advice before it’s too late.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) states that spray foam may affect a property's valuation, particularly if applied incorrectly. Spray foam can reduce airflow in the roof, potentially leading to issues like mould, wood rot, and reduced structural stability.

❌ Foam left behind in eaves – Often hidden and hard to reach without proper access (scaffolding may have been necessary).

❌ Torn or damaged roofing felt – Careless removal can cause holes, leading to leaks and structural issues.

❌ Foil tacked to rafters – A common trick used to hide incomplete removal, preventing proper inspection.

Picnic in the Park 2025 & “BRM - The Homecoming”

A world-beating Formula One racing car, a summer market with traditional fair rides, a car show and an amazing live stage of talented, local performers all await your presence on Saturday June 14th.

Bourne’s annual Picnic in the Park is brighter and much bigger this year. Moving from its traditional Sunday slot to accommodate the homecoming of Graham Hill's iconic “Old Faithful”, winning BRM to Bourne to Saturday, the town will be bursting with things to do and see. As well as the summer market, fair rides, activities and live entertainment on the Well Head, Lincolnshire MG Club are organising a Car Show around the Red Hall.

Delaine Buses will be opening their Bus Museum on Spalding Road, an absolute gem and “must-see collection”, as well as organising rides on their “classic” buses into town.

Working together in liaison with Nick Owen, BRM, Hall & Hall, and Bourne Motor Racing Club will have, besides “Old Faithful”, a collection of other BRM racing cars, on show in the car park outside the Corn Exchange.

Organised by Bourne Town Council Events.

This is certainly not the day to be out of town!

A big thank you to our sponsors...

BRM - The Homecoming

The BRM V16 was launched to the world at Folkingham Airfield on December 15th, 1949, and then to the wider British public on May 13th,1950 at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where Raymond Mays demonstrated the car and the sound to an incredibly enthusiastic audience.

The King and Queen also took a great interest in the car, and press photographs of the day show them inspecting the car, and in conversation with Raymond Mays.

The Homecoming event is a celebration of BRM, and all that was achieved in Bourne over three decades of Formula One Grand Prix Motor Racing between 1950 and 1977.

BRM was the vision of Bourne resident, Raymond Mays CBE,

founder of English Racing Automobiles (E.R.A.) and a successful pre-war racing driver. Post-war, Mays's vision was to create a British Grand Prix car capable of beating the continental teams. He did this with the backing of Sir Alfred Owen and the Rubery Owen organisation, from a factory on Spalding Road (now the site of Delaine Buses and Golding Young's Auction Rooms).

Between 1950 and 1977, BRM started in 197 Grand Prix with seventeen victories, eleven pole positions, fifteen fastest laps, and

Homecoming

winning both the Drivers' World Championship and Constructors' World Championship in 1962, as well as achieving second place in the Constructors' World Championship in 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1971.

Many notable names drove for BRM at different stages in their careers, including six World Champions: Juan Manuel Fangio, Mike Hawthorn, Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart, John Surtees and Niki Lauda. A number of these would stay locally in the town, including Niki Lauda, at The Angel Hotel.

The Homecoming will see a number of BRM cars on display in the Corn Exchange car park, as well as an exhibition and film clips in the Corn Exchange. As ever, a huge thank you to Rick Hall and the team at Hall and Hall in helping make this happen, as well as the BRM Association and Bourne Motor Racing Club. The event is part of a wider celebration of BRM's 75th Anniversary, and that of the Silverstone Circuit and Formula One Grand Prix racing.

I am a singer-songwriter from Peterborough, currently based in Surrey, where I am in my third year of Drama school. I have a versatile musical style, with storytelling vocals, which I accompany with the guitar and piano. An ‘autobiographical songwriter’, I include heartfelt lyrics that I hope resonate with listeners.

This year, I have been in the recording studio, released my first two singles to positive reviews, and I was lucky to have my first single, “Can You See Me Now” played on ‘BBC Introducing’ late last year. I am planning to release an EP later this year.

Father’s Day: to say “Thanks Dad!” An International Opportunity

Father’s Day is always held on the third Sunday of June in the United Kingdom, making it June 15th this year.

It is a day to honour fathers and father figures, such as grandfathers and fathers-in-law. There are some suggestions that the idea of Father’s Day may have originated in pagan sun worship, where some branches of paganism see the sun as the father of the universe. Since the summer solstice occurs around the same time of year as Father’s Day, some people can see a link between the two.

The idea of a special day to honour fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from the United States. There, a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother’s Day celebrations to plan a day to honour fathers. Father’s Day has been celebrated in June since 1910 in the U.S.A. The celebrations in the U.K. are thought to have followed on from the American custom of Father’s Day.

Father’s Day is celebrated worldwide to recognise the contribution that fathers and father figures make to the lives of their offspring. The actual date when Father’s Day is celebrated varies from country to country. As with the U.K. it is celebrated in Canada and the U.S.A. on the third Sunday of June.

It is similarly observed in many other countries, such as Argentina, France, Greece, India, Ireland, Mexico, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa and Venezuela. In Australia and New Zealand, Father’s Day is on the first Sunday in September, whilst Brazilian dads get their recognition on the second Sunday of August.

Father’s Day in India is a relatively (get it?) new concept, but it is celebrated in very similar ways to us, although on a smaller scale. There is a greater awareness of Father’s Day events in metropolitan cities and bigger towns due to the greater exposure of people to the western cultures in these areas. In Mexico, Father’s Day is referred to as “Dia del Padre”, where many families get together, prepare special meals and distribute gifts to fathers and father figures. In South Africa, many social and cultural societies host Father’s Day celebrations to stress the important role of fathers nurturing children and building a stronger society.

Don't Lose Hope's Founders Invited to Buckingham Palace

From an initial idea and a desire to support people's mental health, to gaining charity status in 2018, starting the Community Cafe and counselling services and then the Gift Shop and Community Garden and Shed in 2020 and 2021, Don't Lose Hope has continued to grow and support the local and wider community for the past seven years.

In recognition of the truly incredible work of the charity, the vision, passion, drive and determination of its founder and CEO, Nicola Brister, an invitation to the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace recently arrived on the doorstep, "For services and support of the local community."

Nicola explained, "We don't do things for awards, accolades or recognition, but it was very nice to be asked, and we happily accepted. It was a pleasure to represent all the amazing staff and volunteers who have helped DLH get to where it is today. There is no way we would be here at the Palace, or where we are as a charity, without the support of the incredible team and the local community".

Nicola and Dom enjoyed afternoon tea in the Palace grounds and Nicola even shook Queen Camilla's hand as she and King Charles made their way through to their refreshments. Dom compared gardening ideas as they were able to explore the gardens.

Unfortunately, there has been a reduction in funding from the government in terms of support for mental health in recent times and the charity is always looking for ways to raise revenue to continue supporting the mental health of the local community in as many ways as possible. With a growing presence in the wider area, the charity hopes to draw support from investors and sponsors to maintain and develop the support they can offer.

If this sounds like something you might be able to help with, please get in touch through Dom@ dontlosehope.co.uk or pop into the cafe/shed/shop.

CREATING A DELICIOUS STIR IN THE TOWN!

Discovering Magazines’ Sales Director, Claire Saberton was keen to see for herself whether all the very favourable reports reaching her about the “new” Sassi’s Thai Restaurant in South Street, Bourne were well founded … and, boy, was she impressed!

“My husband, Chris and I visited for supper on Thursday evening, April 24th. We were made to feel very welcome and relaxed on arrival, with lovely Far Eastern music playing. I remarked on the beautiful, clean table setting and understated décor, but I just loved the hanging wicker lampshades. With a gorgeous, fragrant aroma as you enter, I knew we were in for a treat. The chef has worked in the Belaire Hotel in Bangkok and then in Thai Orchid, a popular restaurant in Maidenhead, before settling in Bourne.

Starters:

Mixed starters included Spring Roll, Chicken Satay, Thai Fish cake and ribs, Pla Muek, Chup Paeng Tod, and Thai deep-fried Calamari. Everything was so fresh, crispy and very tasty. The Satay sauce was the best I have tasted and a perfect accompaniment to the Chicken. I must admit the Calamari was my favourite … and Chris loved it all!

Mains:

Lamb Pad Prik was tender, fragrant and delicious, and only fairly spicy. Southern Thai Chicken was sensationalsweet, creamy and with enough spicy heat to taste but not overpowering, all accompanied by coconut rice which was perfect. The Singapore vegetable noodles were packed with fresh vegetables, even cauliflower!

The rest rooms were very clean, pleasant and spacious, with grab rails for the less abled (although be mindful of the steps).

We met a couple who were there for the first time; they loved the food, the whole experience, especially the warm friendly welcome.

Our verdict: Extremely tasty, fresh food with the warmest of welcomes. Great value for money and right on our doorstep. If you haven’t tried Sassi’s, we would definitely recommend it.”

(The five most recent Tripadvisor reviews paint a very similar picture too – Ed.)

Words from the Deputy Mayor

In the absence of our Town Mayor, Councillor Helen Crawford, it was an absolute honour to lead the ‘VE80 Commemorative Event’ on Thursday May 8th at the Cenotaph on the Memorial Gardens in Bourne.

Iwas more than ably assisted by Father Stephen Buckman from the Abbey Church, who delivered a wonderful address of thoughtful and mindful words. It was so pleasing to see so many of you attend the service as part of the national commemorations on such a chilly evening.

I must take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to all those who made the event happen and run smoothly. There’s such a long list of many individuals and organisations, all of whom I paid tribute to on the evening. Once again, a huge thank you for all your contributions.

Finally, I will once again take this opportunity to mention the attendance, and in many ways our “guest of honour” for the evening, Mr Les Budding, aged 99 years. As you will have heard, Les is a D-Day veteran from June 6th, 1944, when aged just nineteen. His bravery, courage, strength and actions are in so many ways the reason we enjoy our freedom today; we salute and thank you, sir.

May I take this opportunity to announce the Annual Meeting of Bourne Town Council on Tuesday May 27th, in the Church Hall at 7pm prompt? It would be so good to see you there.

A Good Night’s Sleep

Our long-term immune system memory is strengthened by having deep sleep. Our sleep helps our body’s immune system remember previously encountered pathogens – bacteria, viruses etc. Which, in turn, helps us protect our body in the future. Overnight during sleep, our brain downloads or unloads memories of facts and events in our daily lives.

Neuroscience research tells us that we rewire our brain at night; we have slow wave sleep and deep sleep. These types of sleep are important for changing fragile, recently formed memories into stable, long-term storage. Science has already been aware that sleep supports long-term memory formation psychologically. But it is an entirely new idea that deep sleep is effective in all organismic systems, improving immune system function. There are two interrelated parts, the first is the innate immunity and the other adaptive immunity.

Improve your immune system naturally

Our innate immunity is our first line of defence, as it responds rapidly to enemy invaders entering the body. Its first defence sign is inflammation, causing swelling, pain, redness or heat. The adaptive immunity kicks in if the innate fails to control the infection. The adaptive response is slow and needs time to gain control so can take a week or more to clear an infection.

The adaptive immune system has a memory of the encounter with bacteria or virus. It gathers remains from the infection to create memory T cells, and these live for months or years and help the body recognise previous infections. Because its memory is strong, it responds more quickly to fight the infection.

Changing Bodies Changing Lives

We are really excited to share some of our success stories with you guys out there that follow us. We take great pride in letting you know just how much our new fat busting and toning machine is helping people on their weight loss journeys and general body confidence.

We all read stories and see pictures on social media and in magazines that look amazing, but we know are not realistic or half the time even true, but these are three actual examples of three ‘real’ ladies and the experience they have had at our clinic.

Why not give it a go? It could change your life too!

Wow!!! Sculpt pro has literally saved my sanity, Made me believe in myself and given me my oomph back. I was clearly dubious (who wouldn't be ?!) but honest it's been one of the best things l've ever done. Lou is so friendly, made me feel at ease and so comfortable getting my belly out! and now wow- eating healthier, walking more along side this treatment - 2.5 inches gone, 9lb gone and the visible difference is unbelievable- I can't thankyou guys enough for giving me my confidence back." Laney D

I had three sessions of the liposculpt and I could notice a difference even after the first session. The treatment has massively improved the condition and appearance of the skin on my stomach, something I have always been conscious of after having two children. No matter how much I exercise, this area has never improved, however it now looks much better and the skin is much firmer and toned. Definitely recommend." Sarah

I am very impressed with the difference that it has made on my legs, after just 6 sessions, it's made me feel more confident in my body, Louise is so lovely and made me feel so comfortable from the moment I got there." Lucy £300 for a course of 3 or £500 for a course of 6

The childhood vaccination programme in the UK protects you from a number of diseases, but you may need extra vaccinations or antimalarials if you’re planning on visiting certain parts of the world.

2 HOW CAN WE HELP?

Getting vaccinated can help prevent you from getting ill if you’re exposed to diseases which we don’t normally have in the UK. We can help you understand how to keep your risks low while abroad and help you work out which vaccinations and antimalarials you may want to consider depending on things like:

• Which regions you’ll be visiting

• What activities you’ll be doing

• Your age and general health

Some travel vaccinations may be needed several weeks before departure. Ideally you should see us six to eight weeks before travelling, but we may still be able to help if you’re leaving sooner, even days before you travel.

3 WHAT VACCINATIONS ARE AVAILABLE?

● Cholera ● Hepatitis A ● Hepatitis B ● Japanese encephalitis

● Meningitis ACWY ● Rabies ● Tick-borne encephalitis

● Typhoid ● Yellow fever ● And many more

NON TRAVEL VACCINATIONS ALSO AVAILABLE Chicken Pox, Meningitis and MMR

CHILDHOOD IMMUNISATIONS ALSO AVAILABLE

The Short Route is Always the Best

As with the car journey, so with the law. In the car, the man always knows how to get there quickest, and the lady sometimes wins the discussion. In legal matters the same rings true.

In house moves, the people who do the best are those that help each other to get a matter over the line.

● In wills and estates, where a person reviews their needs every few years and updates a will, then that is safest. It avoids unexpected surprises. Don’t just say things to people about your will but put it in a will to avoid any ambiguity; the law of Intestacy may otherwise have unwanted consequences. Where we retain a filing system with all our papers, this assists our executors. Discussing our funeral requirements with loved ones can reduce stress during bereavement.

● Keeping on top of our tax responsibilities

with good advice and independent financial advice helps enormously.

● In divorce, going to ‘Relate’ to see if a relationship can be saved is crucial. If we cannot reconcile then, following a solicitor’s advice as to timely disclosure at the same time is very helpful in saving fees.

● Considering a Pre-Nuptial Agreement can help or Deed of Beneficial Interest if we are bringing in assets from a previous life or marriage to the new relationship.

● If embarking on any business set-up, get good advice on what should be in place.

● Always obey the road traffic laws and do not speed. It is better to be safe than sorry.

● Always read the small print and do not be persuaded to sign deals and agreements unless understood. Keep proper records for at least six years.

Above all, if stuck … take legal advice. Proportionality is key.

WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD

Life: it's just as bad as you think it is!

Positive psychology is the scientific study of human strengths, wellbeing, and the factors that contribute to a fulfilling life. Unlike traditional psychology, which often focuses on diagnosing and treating mental illness, positive psychology shifts the focus toward what makes life worth living. It seeks to understand and promote qualities that allow individuals and communities to thrive.

At the heart of positive psychology is the belief that people want to lead meaningful and satisfying lives, cultivate what is best within themselves, and enhance their experiences of love, work, and play. Researchers in this field explore a variety of topics, including happiness, gratitude, optimism, flow (a state of deep engagement), character strengths, and psychological resilience.

One of the foundational frameworks is the “PERMA” model, an acronym that stands for:

1

“Positive Emotion” – Experiencing joy, gratitude, hope, and other uplifting emotions.

2

“Engagement” – Being deeply involved in activities that use one’s strengths (often linked to flow).

3

“Relationships” – Having supportive, meaningful connections with others.

4

“Meaning” – Belonging to and serving something greater than oneself.

5“Accomplishment” – Pursuing goals, mastery, and a sense of achievement

These five elements are considered essential for well-being and can be cultivated through intentional practices.

Research shows that identifying and using one’s top strengths in daily life, such as kindness, perseverance, curiosity and leadership is associated with increased happiness and lower levels of depression.

Another key area of interest is “gratitude”. Studies consistently show that practising gratitude - such as keeping a gratitude journal or writing thankyou letters - can significantly boost mood, increase life satisfaction, and improve physical health.

In personal therapy, positive psychology helps clients build on their strengths and increase well-being.

In sum, positive psychology enriches our understanding of what makes life meaningful and how people can flourish. It does not ignore the problems of life but rather offers a balanced perspectivehighlighting not only how to cope with suffering but also how to thrive and lead a fulfilling life.

Positive psychology enriches our understanding of what makes life meaningful and how people can flourish.

If you or someone you know is stuck in a negative rut - despondent, despairing, weighed down by the past - come along and see what else is possible.

Legal support for business, for family, for life

Lasting Powers of Attorney

When people hear the words “Lasting Power of Attorney” (LPA), they often imagine it’s something you sort out in your seventies or eighties — like a will, or one of those beige electric recliner chairs. But the truth is, LPAs are just as important for people in their thirties and forties as they are for anyone in retirement.

A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows you to appoint someone you trust to make decisions for you if, for any reason, you’re unable to make them yourself. There are two types: one covers property and financial affairs, the other, health and welfare. Together, they form a vital safety net — not just for older adults facing dementia, but for any of us whose lives could take an unexpected turn.

Not Just for Later Life

Let me give you an example.

A client in her early forties — let’s call her Sarah — was a busy professional with two young children and no existing health conditions. Then, out of nowhere, she suffered a brain aneurysm. Thankfully, she survived, but she was in a coma for three weeks and needed months of rehabilitation.

Without an LPA in place, her husband couldn’t access her bank account to pay the mortgage or deal with her employer or private pension provider. More distressingly, decisions about her medical care had to be made without a clear legal authority. It added strain to an already heart-breaking situation.

Contrast that with another client, Alex, a thirtyfive-year-old entrepreneur who set up both types of LPA after starting his business. When he was unexpectedly hospitalised after a serious cycling accident, his appointed attorneys were able to manage his accounts, liaise with his clients, and make care decisions without delays or complications.

LPAs are about planning ahead — not because we expect the worst, but because we want the people we trust, to be in the driver’s seat if life throws us a curveball.

At W & P Legal, we specialise in making this process straightforward, sensitive, and stress-free. Whether you’re twenty-eight or eighty-eight, setting up an LPA is one of the most responsible things you can do for yourself and your loved ones.

The Show Must Go On…

As One Door Closes, Another Opens

Following the amazing news of funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the team at the Old Town Hall in Bourne are preparing for a new phase in the history of this 200-year-old building at the heart of Bourne. The building itself will be closed from the end of April 2025 to allow for it to be emptied and prepped for the ensuing construction work, which is expected to begin later in the year.

Over one hundred wonderful events have been organised and run in the building by the volunteer trustee team over the past few years. With the help of a loyal group of volunteers and ever-supportive visitors, the Old Town Hall has built up a good reputation as a welcoming and friendly venue.

The heartening news is that events by the same team will continue beyond April! You will now see The Old Town Hall ‘Pop-Up’ events at alternative venues in the local area in a very similar vein, aiming to be as vibrant and welcoming as ever.

The first ‘Pop-Up’ event is on Friday June 13th at 7.30pm in the Red Hall. "You Can Not Be Serious; Tales of a Wimbledon Umpire 1988-2012" is a talk by Alan Gray MBE. For tickets at £12.50, please visit the website. There will be a licensed bar. (Wimbledon Pimm’s Cocktail anyone, or maybe Robinson’s Barley Water?)

Please continue to check the website www.bournetownhall.org.uk and social media to see where they’ll be ‘popping up’ next!

Liza on Katie Piper’s Weekend Escape

Last month, we featured Liza Raby, owner of Bourne’s LH Hair Design salon who is raising enormous amounts of money in her ‘Challenge 12’ initiative. This involves Liza providing a different challenge each month, with a target of reaching £200,000 by the end of 2025.

We are delighted to share the news that Liza will be appearing on Katie Piper’s Weekend Escape, which airs on ITV1 and STV on Sunday, June 15th at 8.30am. The episode includes Liza getting a surprise makeover and is a wonderful opportunity to highlight the charity work Liza and her crew do at Spencer’s Hair Salon and LH Hair Design, as well as how that has begun inspiring others. (Look out for her invented word, “pampover” as she muddled up ‘pamper’ and ‘makeover’!)

Following the recent article about Challenge 12, Liza was thrilled when another local salon, Studio 74 in Peterborough, saw it and decided to get involved with her fundraising and community activities too, a great example of how local press can spark connection and collaboration.

Liza is still looking at getting other salons and barbers to get involved with Challenge 12, and for sponsors for next year’s “Spencer's Purple Paradise Ball” on April 25th, 2026.

For more information about Challenge 12, please contact Liza on 07760 498750 or visit www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/liza-raby-1
