WELCOME

Our Holiday 2022 Issue celebrates our De Soto community! We have a new, cleaner design, with more white space.

As I compiled this Thanks, Giving & Growing Issue, it made me realize De Soto is truly a family of residents, businesses and organizations!

Like famlies that truly care for one another, we bump heads (or elbows, during the COVID years), and don’t all agree (as no one does these days), but we come through for each other, help and support one another, and truly do care. Yes, the “small town pride” of De Soto runs deep. Whether you are new to De Soto or a lifelong resident, we are all seeing the transformation of this unique and special area as growth has begun in big ways!

It truly is an area full of plenty, beauty and blessings. As always, enjoy the issue and thank you for making Discovering De Soto one of the most read and treasured printed publications!

Sincerely, Rose Burgweger

De Soto Food Pantry

32904 West 84th Street west of De Soto City Hall

When Lori Murdock envisioned the concept of a food pantry in De Soto eight years ago, she had no idea how busy she would become or how many people she would positively impact.

“When the Johnson County Multi-Service Center in De Soto closed in 2014, families in need had to drive to Olathe and beyond. It wasn’t convenient and I knew we needed to open a food pantry here in De Soto,” recounts Lori.

Lori is the founder and president of the De Soto Food Pantry, and also local business owner /pharmacist at Cedar Creek Pharmacy. She was instrumental in beginning the De Soto Food Pantry in 2014, assembling a board of volunteers, writing bylaws and policies, and establishing the 501(c)(3) organization. Today, seven devoted community members volunteer on The Board of Directors. Additionally, Diane Cochran serves as a paid administrative liaison and according to Lori, “Based on Diane’s numerous efforts, the food pantry essentially runs itself.”

The Board of Directors includes: Lori Murdock, President Diane Cochran, Administrative Liaison

Kim Mattox, Secretary Carol Coffman, Treasurer

Trudy Tilton and Renee James, Volunteer Coordinators

Karen Zimmerman, Board Member

Nikki Leisten, USD Food Drive Coordinator

Larry Coffman, Volunteer Inventory Management

In addition to the Board of Directors, volunteers donate time by stocking, cleaning, and delivering food to the food pantry. Student volunteer groups include Scout Troops, De Soto High School/National Honors Society students and Pioneer 4-H. De Soto Food Pantry has a goal of increasing youth volunteer opportunities. In the future, we hope to add programs that help more kids in need of food and to utilize our volunteers in these efforts.

“I am continuously impressed by how much individuals and local businesses donate,” boasts Lori

De Soto Food Pantry 32904 West 84th Street Hours: Tuesday 10 am to 12 noon Thursday 4 pm to 6 pm Saturday 9 am to 11 am Thanksgiving Bag distribution Saturday, November 19 11:30am-1pm

Each Thanksgiving, dinners are provided to families in need. Any remaining Dinner Kits are donated to the Operation Christmas outreach program, led by De Soto Food Pantry Board Members. This year, the Girl Scouts have prepared pies for the upcoming annual Holiday Dinner Bags. Throughout the year, donations from the community are essential for the De Soto Food Pantry to continue to function and provide outreach. Local individuals, churches, and corporations consistently donate funds and/or food to the food pantry, including: Bowlin Farms, fresh produce; Custom Foods and Harps, baked goods and perishables; USD 232 food drives and fundraisers; and several community members donate fresh vegetables and fruits from their gardens. –written by Kris Meyer, contributing writer

Individuals and families are not required to meet a minimum financial income to partake in the food pantry offerings. Recipients must have proof of residence in the USD 232 De Soto School District attendance area. Families and individuals may visit the De Soto Food Pantry twice a month to pick out their own groceries, including meats and perishables.

The Barn at Kill Creek Farm 9200 Kill Creek Road, De Soto

Giving is at the heart of The Barn at Kill Creek Farm, an event venue that works to support and promote the history of rural Johnson County. At the corner of Kill Creek Road and K-10, the Barn operates as a nonprofit, thanks to the generosity and foresight of Darrel Zimmerman and his late wife Ruth, who donated three acres of the family property to be used for the community. The Barn offers affordable pricing for weddings, graduation parties, family reunions, business trade shows, and nonprofit fundraisers (among other things), and then provides the Barn at a reduced price to civic and other nonprofit organizations. In 2022, the Barn hosted many community groups, including De Soto Pioneer 4-H Club, Advice & Aid, KVC Kansas, International Students, Inc., Free to Thrive, De Soto Rotary, De Soto Historical Society, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, as well as local school dances, sports banquets, and local church events.

When the first barn was erected at Kill Creek Farm in 2000, the community—both individuals and businesses—pitched in to build the traditional red structure. When it was leveled in 2010 by a microburst, the community showed up again, offering helping hands, monetary donations, and support. The Barn hasn’t forgotten about that giving spirit. In an effort to build upon that community outreach, the association hosts a Community Fall Festival every year by opening the farm to visitors and offering farm games, hands-on vendor demonstrations, interactions with farm animals, and free food. Note that next year’s celebration will be Oct. 28, 2023. Also in the spirit of giving, the Zimmerman family grows flowers at the farm and donates fresh bouquets weekly to Hillside Village nursing home in De Soto.

As the winter holidays approach, the Barn at Kill Creek Farm welcomes Kaw Prairie Community Church for their annual Christmas Eve services. This year there will be four services on December 24. Watch for upcoming events and photos on our social media platforms this fall and winter, as the Barn builds its social media presence.

–submitted by Janice Kresin, The Barn at Kill Creek Farm It’s not the quantity that is to be measured that gives value; rather, it is the quality of one’s life and the joy it brings to us and others.

Cause Coffee doesn’t only exist to be a spot to grab a cup of coffee or hang out as a gathering spot for the community. It is dedicated to the mission behind its name. The shop always has a “cause” where people right here in the community, as well as globally, can receive help and hope. This year has been dedicated to helping alongside area local organizations: Rended Heart, a Kansas City based non profit helping rehabilitate women who have been trafficked; and Joy Meadows, located in Basehor, a non profit that provides support and resources for foster families. Currently, Cause Coffee is supporting Kansas City based Grace Blankets, collecting funds to buy new baby blankets for infants in the Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of area hospitals.

Cause Coffee will also wrap up the year by providing Christmas for families in need in the community. We serve coffee with a greater purpose!

The ground has been moving and churning across the horizon at the former Sunflower Ammunition Plant, with infrastructure plans moving rapidly ahead. Officially, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on Monday, October 31, 2022 at the construction site south of Sunflower Road and Lexington Avenue. Governor Laura Kelly, and many Kansas representatives joined Panasonic Energy Co., Ltd. and City of De Soto representatives for a formal ceremony, as reported by Kansas Commerce, The Kansas City Star, Kansas City Business Journal, Shawnee Mission Post and area television stations. All of these sources, including the De Soto City Pages and Sunflower Redevelopment Page on the City website, can keep you well informed as progression and transformation continue. It was also announced on the groundbreaking date, that the new name for the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant is now Astra Enterprise Park Kessinger Hunter, the full-service commercial real estate firm who leads the ownership group, announced,

Road construction is underway on Edgerton Road between 95th and 103rd Streets to accommodate a threelane roadway. Flint Development is managing the roadwork in conjunction with the development of Flint Commerce Center. The industrial park will expand across 370 acres in the area.

The roadway project that began this fall will include a center turn lane, and is expected to be completed by early 2023, according to Devin Schuster, Flint Development co-founder and partner. “We’re proceeding forward, getting our site prepared to be shovel-ready to accommodate a number of different types of uses,” Devin says, once the three-lane road is complete. “We’ve got a couple of different groups that are circling that we think have real sincere interest in the project.”

Discussions with potential users of the facilities are in progress and include a variety of industrial users, such as manufacturing, warehousing and distribution. “By making our improvements, we are ahead of a specific user and it helps with the timeline,”

“The new name reflects the tremendous effort and the investment made to transform the 9,035-acre property from its former use to the new location of Panasonic’s $4 billion advanced electric-vehicle battery facility, which was formally approved by the company’s board on October 31, 2022.”

The name is inspired by the Kansas State motto: “Ad astra per aspera,” which means, “To the stars, through difficulty.”

Additional highlights of the 9,035 acres of Astra Enterprise Park include 2,000 acres of preserved public parklands transferred to Johnson County Parks and Recreation, 700 acres transferred for the public benefit, including higher education, civic, schools, fire and water.

605 acres will include 305 acres for Panasonic’s immediate build, with an option of 300 additional acres. The balance of the site is flexible and can include mixed use, residential, corporate campuses or other uses.

LexingtonAve

For complete Astra Enterprise Park information, visit: https://www. astraenterprisepark.com/ –compiled by Rose M Burgweger, editor

Devin explains. “It increases our likelihood to secure a great business to expand into De Soto.” When an agreement is reached with a potential user, [an expected] 12 to 15 months will be needed for the building to be permitted, designed and completed. Due to the exponential growth in the area with developments of the industrial park, as well as the new Panasonic electric vehicle (EV) battery plant, Evergy is also expanding and building a new location on Sunflower Road. Evergy and Flint Development are working together to facilitate electrical and energy requirements needed for future construction. However, Evergy is currently focused on the Panasonic battery plant. “Until [we have]a specific user with their exact equipment and electrical requirements, we won’t get into detailed discussions with Evergy,” Devin informed. Flint Development is coordinating efforts with the City of De Soto as ongoing infrastructure work continues.

Developing and building office space and new housing

Golden Lane and Wildcat Plaza will be a combination residential /commercial development providing much needed space

Shown above left, Golden Lane, currently under construction. Shown above right, is the completed rendition provided by Adams Architecture.

Transformation of a once vacant lot began this fall and is currently being developed into a 7,200 sq. ft. residential and commercial space. The property located at 33391 Lexington Avenue, across from TriCentury Bank, will bring much needed professional space to the area and additional housing options. The project is expected to be completed by next fall, September 2023.

The project came about when Dustin Baker, Alcove Development partner, became aware of the available property. “It is a great lot for multi-use and an opportunity to continue future development along Lexington Avenue,” Dustin informed with enthusiasm.

In addition, Alcove Development was pleased to be the developer of Arbor Ridge Phases III, continuing the quality provided by Arbor Ridge Phase I and II. Infrastructure for the 63-lot residential area involved roads, sidewalks, sewer and electrical services being completed in Spring of 2021. Single-family homes are now underway in the phase III development. see pages 2-3

Golden Lane will offer space for up to three medical/ professional tenants inside the one story commercially zoned building.

Golden Lane residential will contain four lots, with one lot facing Lexington Avenue and three lots facing Golden Lane. These will consist of (2) four-plexes and (1) six-plex, with each living space between 1,750-1,850 sq. ft. Each rental will offer 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths and a garage.

“We’re committed to the De Soto community,” states Dustin, whose roots are in the area. He attended K-12 De Soto schools, and is a De Soto High School Class of 1994 graduate. Alcove has also been part of the De Soto Chamber of Commerce and De Soto Economic Development Council.

An additional multi-use project will also be developed by Alcove Properties, located northeast of The Dollar Store. This is a joint venture between Alcove Development and Dr. Matt Fehr. The longtime established De Soto Veterinary, located at 33900 Lexington Avenue, will relocate to a newly-designed facility just around the corner. Dr. Fehr is immensely excited about the newly-constructed veterinary clinic that will also include an upstairs apartment for veterinary intern students. “We’ve been looking for a larger place, as we have outgrown the current building,” shared Dr. Fehr. “We look forward to the larger space and have plans to add an additional veterinarian for the growing community.” He also adds with appreciation, “We are super thankful for the support the community has given, and for providing the need for this expansion.”

The land transfer process of the two-acre City property began in 2021. This fall, the City vacated public right-of-way, the land was transferred and preliminary site plans were submitted at the De Soto City Council Meeting on Thursday, October 20, 2022.

Wildcat Plaza will include (2) 10,000 square foot buildings. Each two-story building will have 5,000 square feet per floor. De Soto Veterinary Clinic will occupy the first floor of the northeast building shown at right. Their current 1,000 square foot space will increase substantially in the new premises and will allow for additional staffing and services. The second floor apartment will also have an additional open space available.

The second building will have a total of four commercial properties on the main floor, with six available apartments on the upper floor shown at lower right.

Construction is expected to begin next summer with an expected completion date by the end of 2024.

Adams Architects, based in Lawrence, and Milburn Civil Engineering, LLC in downtown De Soto are working with the developers.

Alcove Development is a commercial and residential developer located in Lawrence. Their partners and staff all live in the counties they serve, and they are committed to improving their communities. She is also available to do women’s and children’s haircuts, but does not offer chemical services (perms, haircolor). Well established and experienced in her profession, Tyler previously owned The Hair Lounge in downtown Kansas City. With an active family, she was looking for a closer location. Hypnosis

Tiffany Downing is a familiar face in De Soto, as she has been a massage therapist in the area for 18 years. “I didn’t want to move away from helping people, but I wanted to do something different,” Tiffany explained. “So I moved from massages to hypnosis.” Tiffany took online courses from Leah Agami, who is a graduate of the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts in Tempe, Arizona, and registered and certified by the American Board of Hypnotherapy. Tiffany clarifies this is not a mind control, but mind empowerment–helping in the areas of stress and anxiety relief, pain management, relaxation and sleep issues. “I work within a certain scope and medical issues I refer out,” informed Tiffany, certified professional hypnotist by the ICBCH (International Certification Board of Coaches and Hypnotists). email tmdowning303@gmail.com or phone 913-530-4506

Happy Valley Reopened

Nearby Western Shawnee residents Mike and Patti Raether were looking for land and wanted to stay in the USD 232 School District, where their son attends middle school. Patti researched various land/homes available and found a listing by local De Soto resident Kris Johnson, Keller Williams Realty. “Let’s go look at it,” Patti suggested. The couple drove out to the 17 acre rural property and within five minutes Mike declared, “We are absolutely doing this!”

That was the beginning of a new venture for Mike and Patti, who are now the proud and happy owners of Happy Valley Farm. “We got to know Spike and Patty Durkin–and the magical presence of Happy Valley in the community,” explained Mike. “Their support has been unbelievable. We fell in love with what they created in 2004, and then with what we can do,” Mike shared, excited to carry on the legacy.

It seems like a divine orchestration brought Mike and Patti, and Spike and Patty, together! The two couples have been working together since the Raethers took possession of the site on August 18, 2022. “Spike and Patty have been up here at the farm, mentoring us and we talk with them every day,” Mike said, with much appreciation for their assistance in a smooth transition. “We couldn’t have done this without their help!”

Mike grew up in Wisconsin, outside of Madison, working on his grandfather’s farm for many years. He is an infantry army veteran. Patti is an IT consultant who works from home and does the behind the scenes organizating and financials.

Happy Valley Farm reopened October 1, 2022, just in time for the annual Kaw Valley Farm Tour that the farm had been part of for many years. “You have to be open for the Farm Tour!” Patty Durkin insisted. So the Raethers hit the ground running with their new venture!

They were open for the farm tour. They have been open since then offering field trips, making cider and offering the same delicious apples from Rasa Orchards in Lexington, Missouri (both bushels and the mixed bags). Each Monday apple orders are called in. Happy Valley customers can also pre-order their own assortment of bushels of apples.

You’ll find the same vendors, as the Durkins have shared their resources and contacts to the Raethers. Their prior Amish vendor out of Indiana has been replaced with a nearby Missouri Amish vendor. Plenty of honey is available, with the same fill-your-own one pound Happy Valley jar. In addition, local Chris Cakes and other products have been added.

The Raethers have also added their own touches with a newlybuilt cider-making area and pumpkin photo area. They will donate a crop row to Pioneer 4-H for their own project and sales. There are plenty of plans and ideas ahead for 2023. interview with Mike and Patti Raether, at Happy Valley Farm by Rose Burgweger, publisher and editor

CITY WELCOMES NEW EMPLOYEE

The City of De Soto hired Chet Belcher to fill the position of Public Works Director and City Engineer.

In preparation to best navigate the rapid pace of economic development, while also improving infrastructure and public service for De Soto residents, the City began recruitment for a new employee that would fill the role of City Engineer and Public Works Director.

During the hiring process, City Administrator Mike Brungardt said he was confident the City had found the right mix of experience, knowledge, and personality in Chet. "Chet’s engineering education and background along with his public works and city government managerial experience made his resume stand out, but it was his earnest understanding of what working for the public means that convinced us

he was the right fit for the position. He knows that one of the most important contributions a

Keep a lookout in your mailbox for a citizen satisfaction survey which will be sent to every household within the next month!

It was both the role's blend of duties and possibilities, as well as the city itself, that stood out to Chet when applying for the job. He said, "One of the most interesting facets of this position is getting in on the ground floor of helping De Soto grow as the new, large scale development projects come online. I want to look back in 20 years and say, I was able to collaborate with city leadership, business owners, and our residents to help De Soto grow in meaningful, intentional, and responsible way. I also enjoy De Soto because of its forwardthinking and progressive outlook balanced with the small town values and traditions like De Soto Days. Oh, and who could forget the world-famous Steve's Meat Market?!"

Chet jumped right in learning his dual roles and says his #1 priority is succession planning and knowledge transfer. "The public works department has a wonderful mix of people just entering the workforce balanced with seasoned veterans with more than 20 years with the city. It is critical that new De Soto employees absorb the institutional knowledge to ensure a seamless transition of providing excellent customer service."

"Chet has been here less than a month, and we can already tell the impact he will have, both in this role and on De Soto." Communications Director Whitney Lange continues, "He doesn't just fill the 'technical engineering needs required' checkbox; he has this very palpable dedication to developing and fostering his department, supporting other City employees in their projects, and continuously keeping the needs and wants of the residents in mind - qualities that often takes years in a role to acquire. We truly are lucky to have Chet on the team!" 15

CITY UPDATES

OTTAWA STREET RECONSTRUCTION

The Ottawa Street Reconstruction Project, reaching between 82nd Street and the Riverfest Park entrance, begins mid November with the expected completion by early Summer time This project was formulated during the City's CIP process when the public provided strong support for Ottawa Street pedestrian and bicycle access to Riverfest Park.

The current two lane stretch of road from 82nd Street, over the railroad, to the entrance of Riverfest Park is approximately 24 feet in total width with no shoulder or sidewalk; this reconstruction project will make the trip out to Riverfest Park more easily accessible by widening the road to 32 feet (two 11 foot travel lanes and two 5 foot bike lanes) Additionally, there will be an 8 foot wide concrete sidewalk along the east side with grading for a future 5 foot sidewalk along the west side These improvements will provide better multimodal access to the park and the many events hosted there each year.

The bridge and thus entrance to Riverfest Park, the Water Treatment Facility, brush site, and animal shelter will be closed, and access to these facilities will be limited to an Edgerton Road to 79th Street detour

Our award project is a 1.5 mile long, 10’ wide recreation path on Sunflower Rd from 103rd to 91st; the trail will tie Clearview City into existing city paths and Lexington Lake Park

This is a huge leap in progress for City Council’s goal of complete walking connectivity, and we can’t wait to get started!

ARTS IN PUBLIC PLACES

Check out the new art sculptures at the intersection of 83rd & Kill Creek! These pieces are in the rotating outdoor sculpture exhibit of the Arts in Public Places Program, a collaborative project between the De Soto Arts Council and the City

The City received an almost $800k Transportation Alternative Grant Award for a Sunflower Road Recreation Path.

This @KDOT sponsored grant provides funding for a variety of alternative transportation projects, often dedicated to enhancing the safety, mobility, and walkability of cities.

The plant, expected to employ 4,000 people, will manufacture "2170" cylindrical Li ion batteries to meet surging domestic EV battery demand “The new facility in Kansas will further grow our capacity, efficiency and economies of scale which are critical to a net zero emissions future," said Kris Takamoto, Executive Vice President of Panasonic Energy Co , Ltd , Head of EV Battery Business.

Santa Claus and his helpers

area residents, Ken and crista tyler, are a jovial couple who enjoy assisting santa each christmas season. the fun began in 2017, when a church staff member noticed Ken had a beard, and asked about him to be part of a Christmas celebration at church. “That first year it was just santa,” shared crista. “We looked online and found Mrs. claus, and the rest was history!”

the couple makes an appearance at ridgeview Elementary, as part of an assembly. in addition, they are part of the “Happy Birthday to Jesus celebration” at Joy Meadows, in Basehor. (the organization provides support for foster families and has many volunteer opportunities. https://www.joymeadows.org/)

“the kids are always so excited,” said Ken. “We do it for the children, and hopefully we give joy.” santa Ken has a little ledger book, that he brings to reference when kids ask “if they have been naughty or nice.” if kids ask for something outrageous, he replies, “i’ll have to talk to your parents, as we don’t usually have that in the shop.” and when asked, “are you the real santa?” the reply is “santa needs alot of helpers.”

Superintendent of Schools Announces Retirement

Frank Harwood, superintendent of schools, publicly announced his retirement from usd 232 during the Board of Education meeting on Monday, october 3, 2022. He will complete the current school year, his 30th in public education, with his retirement effective June 30, 2023.

“it has been my honor to serve as the superintendent of this wonderful school district,” said Frank Harwood. “i have greatly enjoyed my time in usd 232 and cannot imagine a better district to lead. i truly appreciate the opportunity i was given and know that more good things are in store for the district. i am humbled to have played a small part in what we have become.”

usd 232 has accomplished several notable achievements during Harwood’s seven years as superintendent. He provided leadership resulting in a formal vision and mission for the Board of Education, which drives an annual process to identify goals, objectives, and strategies to improve student achievement. the pathways course was added to the middle school core classes to help students better understand their career aspirations and develop plans to achieve their goals. Harwood also instituted long-term planning to prepare the organization to respond to future needs. He provided leadership that resulted in the passage of a bond issue in 2018 covering more than 38 projects in the areas of safety and security, career and technical education, Early childhood education, educational technology, school facility improvements, and land acquisition.

“i know i speak for every Board member who has had the privilege of working with dr. Harwood when i say that he will be tremendously missed. our district is fortunate to have dr. Harwood serve as superintendent, and the Board appreciates the opportunities to work alongside him,” stated ashley spaulding, Board of Education president. “usd 232 has grown and improved in so many ways under his calm and consistent leadership the past seven years, and the Board looks forward to accomplishing more with dr. Harwood as he continues to serve our school community the remainder of the school year.”

the community is invited to embrace the spirit of giving in partnership with the usd 232 Education Foundation’s fourth annual 12 Days of Giving Campaign, which begins on Giving tuesday, november 29.

Donated funds benefit each of the twelve schools in the district, focusing on each school’s individual needs. Based on recent reported needs of teachers, the Foundation’s current goal is to increase support for students and teachers, including professional development, curriculum, classroom resources, and socialemotional resources which could potentially include a Wellness room at every school. a Wellness room is a designated space at work that adults can retreat to for quiet time, privacy, recuperation, and an escape from the fast pace of the typical school environment. currently, Mill Valley High school and de soto High school are piloting the Wellness room concept. Following the pandemic, educators were faced with unprecedented needs for socialemotional funding and increased awareness. since its inception in 2019, the usd 232 Education Foundation has listened to the needs of teachers, answering the call by raising thousands of dollars for classroom support. “the best part about the 12 days of Giving is that all donations go immediately back to schools,” reports casey rooman smith, Executive director of the usd 232 Education Foundation. to participate in this year’s 12 Days of Giving Campaign, businesses and individuals can donate online with payments through paypal, debit or credit card by visiting the usd 232 Education Foundation’s website at: https://www.usd232.org/educationfoundation

De Soto’s historian keeps our history alive and well

Lifelong area resident Kathy ross, shown above, is living out her passion of being De Soto’s historian. In an era of fleeting online posts that are viewed and quickly diminish, Kathy has chosen to preserve history. she maintains records, scans photos and collects memorabilia that she hopes will last for many lifetimes. There is quite a collection of photos on the walls and on display, many files and bound books, and many years of compiling and organizing these historical treasures. the public is invited to walk in and visit the historical building on thursdays from 10 am to 4 pm. “residents come in and check their house history, ask about geneology and enjoy hearing about what de soto used to look like,” informed Kathy. “or they have photos to add to our collection.” People also like to hear about the Sunflower Ammunition plant. Kathy worked with the de soto chamber of commerce and Sunflower Publishing, providing photos for their article “the past and the Future” in the annual Expanding de soto chamber directory. she has also been a great resource through the years for many articles that have appeared in our own quarterly feature publication–Discovering De Soto. Kathy’s passion for de soto history actually began in the cemetery. she began working with the de soto cemetery Board in February of 2003, and volunteered to help Margaret Johnston with a census of the cemetery–each stone, row by row. Kathy continued on as “sexton” with a small stipend, remapping the local cemetery and keeping the records. the detailed historical recordkeeping honed her skills and interests.

DE SOTO HISTORICAL SOCIETY

ANNUAL 2O23 CALENDAR $10 Donation

The Sesquicentennial of De Soto in 2007 resulted in a De Soto Historical committee, which self-published “de soto, Kansas is 150 Years old” 1857-2007 and also included “de soto, Kansas is 100 Years old” 1857-1957 by dot ashlock-Longstreth. “i typed every word of it,” Kathy said proudly, and also acknowledged Mary Guntert’s great assistance in adding the local organizations, businesses and maps from 1957-2007. the book was republished again in 2017 by the Historical society. the book is an informative resource and collection of entertaining and nostalgic essays. copies are available for $12. the de soto Historical society formed out of the 2007 Sesquicentennial committee. Kathy began her research with “Find a Grave” and ancestry.com, and started connecting people who had passed on with family trees. she has also researched her own Ross Family going back to the Mayflower. “Build on one thing, after another, after another,” shared Kathy. Her photo research began with the archives dott stephens had collected. (dot ran the abbott Hall museum before it closed due to health issues.) See article Discovering De Soto Heritage Edition Fall 2016. https://issuu.com/discoveringdesoto

The group became official when Kathy Ross and Mary Guntert met with the Kansas rural community Foundation in Wamego and set up the 501(c)(3) organization. The first meeting was held May of 2016, with 15 attendees in the lower level meeting room of TriCentury Bank. Positions were voted on and the first project was the “History progression of Main street.”

Kathy ross is the chair, with daughter Lori ross, the Vice- chair. Lori has been invaluable over the years, and also works full time with the Johnson county Library. (she holds a Master’s degree in Library science.) Kathy puts in about 25 hours a week, doing this venture as a service to the de soto community. “all you guys are very good to me–and put up with all my jumping up and down about de soto History!” says Kathy with much appreciation. the annual dues of $25 and the yearly historical calendar sales fund speakers from the Humanities Kansas organization. Funding has also been received from the city of de soto for reimbursements submitted by the historical society. the nearby Eudora area Historical society, established in 1980, recently hosted the timely “History of the Sunflower Ammunition plant.” the two historical societies reciprocate with invitations to each other’s programs. the EaHs/Executive director, Ben terwillinger, on staff through the city of Eudora, also manages the Eudora community Museum. the de soto Historical society belongs to Johnson county Heritage Foundation and Freedom Frontier national Heritage Foundation. the Kansas Historical society, located in topeka, also offers a wealth of information. https://www.kshs.org/ “Everybody should have a life passion,” encourages Kathy, as she enthusiastically states, “i have found my ultimate hobby!” –Interview with

A Grand Celebration of God’s Work through Reverend Copeland

The streets were full, overflowing from the parking lot... and inside de soto Baptist church, the pews were full. “is this Easter?” remarked reverend richard copeland. as he looked upon the church full of members and many visitors from near and far, they spanned a lifetime of 55 years of memories serving as minister to de soto Baptist church and the de soto community. Many introductions followed of those that had travelled from many states across the u.s. to be part of this special day. the choir, directed by Jeff Hodges, was full of many generations, and sang so beautifully. “trust in Jesus” composed by Mark Haynes and dedicated to the copelands at their 50th anniversary of serving the de soto Baptist family was also sung, along with an original piece by Jon copeland.

Reverend Copeland began his final sermon with, “I serve a risen savior,” as he continued on speaking about the empty tomb. “the words of Jesus, ‘peace be unto you,’” he declared “was the greatest truth.” though it was the end of august and we are coming upon the christmas season, the timeless message of Easter filled Reverend Copeland’s departing sermon.

several times, reverend copeland reminded the congregation, “Be of good cheer, and do not be afraid,” referencing Jesus coming to the disciples as they weathered a storm out at sea. at the age of 82, he reminded us to “be of good cheer,” even through tribulations–as Christ and the apostle Paul knew suffering well. ‘thanks be unto God, who gives Victory!’” paul declared. and last, he encouraged his congregation to “Be of good cheer,” as the next pastor will be better.

Richard presented his wife, Mary Etta, with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Fred Jones, Karen Wall and Doug Opdycke presented richard and Mary Etta with a generous amount of money from the church in appreciation of their years of service. an audiovisual collection of photos that were compiled by danny and Linda Lane was shown.

a wonderful reception was held in the fellowship hall in the lower level, where dear friends and family could express their greetings and gratitude to richard and Mary Etta and enjoy the rich fellowship of breaking bread together.

‘‘“Summer Fun” was designed to draw people in. The bright colors of the painted steel catches your eye and invites you to look closer. The interior feature of cast glass rounds are different from all directions. The cast glass will transmit and reflect direct and ambient light.

The inspiration for this work was the launch of Spring into Summer. Here’s what “Summer Fun” brings to mind for me: blue water, bubbles, laughter. I spent most of one summer in a city pool in rural Kansas. I loved watching the bubbles rise as I expelled the air from my lungs under water. It also brings to mind the rising sound of giggles and laughter in my memory. The feature at the top of the sculpture represents the culmination of the air bubbles rising to break the surface of the water and escape into the atmosphere, the sound of laughter lifting towards the heavens.

The De Soto Arts Council has worked with many organizations through the years. This year, they celebrate installing public art through the City of De Soto funding. Shown below are De Soto’s newest installations at De Soto City Hall and the “T’ intersection at Kill Creek Road and 83rd Street.

I became captivated by horses and their quiet, unassuming nature, natural poses, and beauty. My desire was to create a sculpture abstract enough to draw attention but still recognizable. The three abstract horse sculptures are part of a series that I began in 2015, now numbering 52. Initially influenced by horse sculptors, David Owen and Debra Butterfield, I became attracted to the Cubist art movement originating with the artist Pablo Picasso. The shiny horse on the left side of the platform is styled with four layers of steel geometric cutouts to accentuate form and musculatur. The rusted middle sculpture is intended to create form with dark or transparent spaces allowing the viewer to investigate the innards of the horse. The piece on the right side is also layered, but exclusively with triangular cutouts. The pose abstracts a horse looking to its past.

New local physician caring for area patients

Five years ago, when Jessica Greinke was finishing her internal medicine residency on the east coast, she knew she would eventually move back to Kansas. Other than the three years she spent at Georgetown University in D. C. completing her medical training, the Sunflower State had always been home. A native of Manhattan, Greinke graduated from Kansas State University, and earned her medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. When she accepted a position at a medical practice in Overland Park, she and her husband, Chris, first settled in metropolitan Kansas City. But they knew eventually they wanted something outside the city. De Soto felt like the right fit for their growing family.

“I knew I wanted to live and practice in Johnson County,” Greinke says. “I was drawn to De Soto because of the rural feel, but with the nearby conveniences of a larger city. I love that I can easily get to Lawrence or Kansas City from my home.”

After several years of working in Overland Park, Greinke was pleased to be presented with an opportunity to practice internal medicine closer to home–right here in De Soto. In August 2022, she joined AdventHealth Medical Group as an internist at the Primary Care De Soto office, located at 8960 Commerce Drive.

“After spending years working at a large and busy practice in Overland Park,” Greinke says, “I am eager to see what new challenges a smaller practice can offer.”

As a Board-certified internist, Greinke sees adult patients (ages 18 and up), and provides care for a wide range of health needs, from chronic disease management to preventive care, and everything in between.

“I chose internal medicine because of the variety of medical conditions that I have the chance to diagnose and treat,” Greinke says. “I love developing relationships with my patients, and primary care allows me to get to know them and help them navigate the complex world of healthcare.”

When she’s not at the office, Greinke enjoys spending time with Chris and their boys, along with the family’s dog, a lab/boxer mix named Quinn. “We frequent the parks and playgrounds of De Soto and surrounding areas,” she says. “I particularly enjoy walking around Lexington Lake Park. And if I’m not working or outside with the kids, you will usually find me at my sewing machine.”

Giving on many levels–fresh food, friendship and fitness–through learning and beautification of K-State Demonstration Gardens

The Johnson County Extension Master Gardener program has nine demonstration gardens located throughout the county. All are managed by volunteer co-chairs, bed captions and garden teams.

The largest demonstration garden closest in proximity to De Soto is the Backyard Garden. This one-acre garden was established in 2005 at the Kansas State Research and Extension Center in nearby rural Olathe. The garden features vegetables, herbs, fruits and a variety of flowers created with the backyard gardener in mind.

Unique about this garden is the produce that is distributed to area pantries. Volunteer gardeners record weekly contributions, weigh, wash and pack up boxes that will be rotated among area food pantries and organizations. “Over a ton of produce is donated each season,” informed Terry Ecklund, co-chair of the Backyard Garden. “It’s a nice feeling to work out here and donate to those that need help.”

About 30 volunteer gardeners maintain the community garden–learning new ways to increase productivity, preparing the gardens in the fall and spring, and growing friendships while cultivating learning and staying fit out in the fresh air. People bring a variety of backgrounds to this newly found network. Many volunteers are retired.

There are abundant avenues to give–within the walls of churches and outside its doors; both individually and corporately; assisting physical needs and providing emotional support; and giving financial assistance. These pages by no means cover all that individuals, churches and organizations are actively “doing.” They are merely a few highlights of giving, and will perhaps inspire your own passion to give.

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”

–Matthew 25:35-36

Souper Bowl of Caring is a nationwide campaign that began in 1990, to unite communities to “tackle hunger.” Locally, the De Soto Baptist Church has held “Souper Bowls” for many years, providing assistance to various individuals, families and the De Soto Food Pantry. The local community is invited to enjoy a soup luncheon and donate to our area

Souper Bowl fundraiser. This year’s recipient is the De Soto Food Pantry. In addition, De Soto Baptist Church contributes to the annual De Soto Food Pantry Thanksgiving Baskets; Snacks for Starside Elementary School; Operation Christmas and various denominational ministries. The church also supports local missionaries Dustin and Nikki Stewart, DHS graduates.

Victor Velez, Interim Pastor, De Soto Baptist Church

Raised in the church, Victor received his call as a young child and played piano in children’s church. As a teen, he and two friends formed a Christian band, performing and preaching in South Texas. Pastor Velez received his Piano Performance degree from Southern Nazarene University and Master’s in Religious Studies from Central Baptist University. His wife and partner in ministry, Danette departed for heavenly realms in 2007. Their five children are all grown.

Arts in Prison is held at the Lansing Correctional Facility. Local resident Dan Dakota became involved in the program for several decades, teaching drawing, watercolor and printmaking to men in “good behavior.” Through Bethany Prison Ministry, Dan met Father Anthony and helped raise funds for a library at Friends of St. Anne’s Girl’s School in Kenya. see https://issuu.com/discoveringdesoto Exploration Issue, Spring 2017, pages 12-13.

Also ministering in Kenya, Africa, are former De Soto residents Jerry and Cheryl Turner. They formed the Life Changing Truth Ministry in De Soto and relocated to Kenya in 2019. Since that time, they began Fountain of Life Church, opened a Bible College; and offer several outreach programs in Bible studies and discipleship, family and marriage counseling. Food and clothing are distributed, and vocational training is offered. https://lifechangingtruth.net/about/

Bless My Home Ministries was created out of a partnership between True Light Family Resource Center in Kansas City and Harvest Ridge Covenant Church in Western Shawnee. Women from both organizations–urban Kansas City and suburban Johnson County–meet for “Sister-to-Sister” events to deepen friendships between diverse women. During one of these gatherings, Brenda Miles, Bless my Home Ministries title here, met a woman who recently had moved into her own apartment after a time of homelessness. Brenda and other volunteers from Harvest Ridge Covenant Church gathered furniture and home items for the new apartment. This was the beginning of Brenda’s calling to help others transition out of homelessness by providing needed furnishings. She and Patricia Porche, True Light Day Shelter/ Transitional Housing Manager, formed Bless My Home Ministries in 2017. They have served more than 160 clients.

DeSoto Youth Ministries (DYM)

welcomes back Chad Chambers as the new Executive Director. Chad will be joining Donna Wilting (Co-Founder) in building on the past and helping lead DYM into the next season of ministry.

21 years ago, Chad was part of DYM’s full-time staff and helped lead over 60 mission trips, along with pouring into the lives of local youth spiritually.

While still staying connected to DYM, Chad and his wife, Allison, took the gospel to the rodeo culture where he served as Chaplain for 10 years. Now, circling back, Chad is bringing new vision and direction to DYM. He will continue to expand, equip, and train people of all ages to become missionaries in their own unique network of people, helping them become fully alive followers of Jesus. “I feel the Lord leading me take the things he has been teaching me and add some intentionality to what is already happening at DYM,” said Chad, excited to return to DYM.

Chad has a heart for people and looks forward to all the new connections he will be making in the community.

True Light Family Resource Center identifies and screens potential clients who are able to secure housing. Bless My Home clients also come from advocates at local domestic violence shelters and Children’s Mercy Hospital, and are referred by social workers. Bless My Home provides one piece in a much bigger network of healing and hope.

A Client Needs List is compiled and the Bless My Home team begins matching items in their inventory with the current needs. Items are also posted on facebook, Blessings Abound and in church newsletters. When all items are obtained, a delivery is scheduled. Volunteers load up the trailer, complete the delivery and setup of furnishings–and then pray with the clients in their new apartments.

Bless My Home Ministries welcomes volunteers in many areas. The ministry welcomes new and/or gently used furniture and household items. Take a photo of your donation and email blessmyhomeministries@gmail.com

and you will be contacted by Bless My Home. Urgent needs are listed on the Bless My Home Ministries facebook page.

Volunteers are also needed for pickup and delivery of items, organizing donations and writing notes. Financial gifts may be made online: https://harvestridge.churchcenter.com/giving “Furnishing homes through love,” states their website. Volunteer Ken Shroeder adds, “I want my kids to know there is a world outside of Johnson County. Bless My Home Ministries is a program that blesses everyone involved.”

As the days get shorter you may notice the colorful lights throughout De Soto. While they adorn the street with an irridescent blue, the lights are not actually meant to be this color. These bulbs actually have a manufacturing defect that causes them to change color. The City of Olathe had a similar issue and informed the public that the defect causes the bulbs covering to fail prematurely, therefore casting a blue hue from the LED light.

City of De Soto’s Communication’s Director, Whitney Lange commented that this is a nationwide manufacturing issue, which explains why other cities in Kansas, such as Wichita, Manhattan and Pittsburg, also have blue streetlights. Whitney also informed, “[the lights] will definitely be replaced; Evergy does have a Street Light Outage form where people can report that a street light is blue/purple.” https://www.evergy.com/street-light-outage

Construction at Lexington Avenue and K-10 continues on as crews will continue to work through the approaching winter months. Repairs include the overpass at Lexington Avenue; the overpass at Kill Creek Road; and capacity expansion of the ramps going on and off K-10. The north side of K-10 signals will be taken out and repaired. “All of these are very weather dependent in determining their completion dates,” infomed Mike Reinhardt, KDOT metro engineer. The construction at K-10 prompted the installation of Span Wire Traffic Signals at the intersection of Kill Creek Road and 83rd Street, when the project began earlier this year.

Northwest Consolidated Fire District Community Report

The Holiday and Winter Seasons bring cooler and freezing temperatures. That also means a greater fire risk–when furnaces are turned on and fireplaces and portable heaters are used to warm our homes. ensure a Happy and Safe Holiday Season with these Home Safety Tips and Reminders:

• Have your fireplace and/or furnace inspected and cleaned by a professional annually. Put ashes in an enclosed metal container and place outside three feet away from any structure, or surrounding items. Make sure the fireplace is completely out each night.

• Portable heaters should be plugged directly into a wall outlet–not into power strips or extension cords. Keep portable heaters three feet away from anything that could catch fire. Follow manufacture’s safety recommendations and never leave unattended.

• install or check existing carbon monoxide detectors, also known as CO detectors, on each level of your residence. CO is an odorless and colorless gas that is poisonous–which can be produced by a furnace, fireplace, or any gas appliance. Symptoms of CO exposure can include: Headache, dizziness, nausea, lightheadedness, confusion, and loss of consciousness. CO poisoning needs to be treated right away by getting outside to fresh air and calling 911.

Information provided from nfpa.org/education

enjoy Christmas Trees with Care and Caution

• Christmas Trees should have fresh, green needles. Cut 2” from the base of the trunk before placing in a secure tree holder. Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from heat sources–fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights–and not blocking exits. Check water in the tree stand every day, as trees soak up water daily. Use lights by a qualified testing laboratory. Replace worn string lights and loose or damaged bulbs. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the number of light strands that can be connected. Turn off lights when leaving home or going to bed. A dry tree is a fire hazard and burns quickly!

Warm Wishes for a Wonderful and Safe Holiday Season!
