Green & Goldd! it’s in our bloo

The Green Bay Packers are known around the world for having a special bond with their fans and the community. Local history makers – Curly Lambeau and George Calhoun – brought together athletes and organized a sandlot football team. Today, Packers fans can be found around the world proudly wearing green and gold. Lambeau Field is one of the most historic and revered stadiums in the United States, and the Green Bay Packers are the only team in the National Football League to be owned by the fans. Consistently ranked No. 1 for “fan experience,” Lambeau seats approximately 80,000 fans. We could fill another stadium and a half with the number of fans that are on the season ticket waiting list! No matter the time of your visit Lambeau is open for public tours of the stadium and the famous Packers Hall of Fame. Bring your phones – because there are TONS of photo ops for your football scrapbook or fan-cave. Oh, and make sure to stop and pick up all the necessary Packers gear at the Packers Pro Shop before you leave! You’ll find Packers history all over the city! Discover Vince Lombardi’s hang out at the Hotel Northland, or Bart Starr’s Super Bowl I MVP Corvette at the Automobile Gallery. Head over to the east side of town to take a look at City Stadium – the first home of the Packers. The Packers Heritage Trail will show you around!

Outside of game day the most active time around Lambeau is in July and August during training camp. Join in the iconic tradition of bringing your children’s bikes to practice in hopes of a player hitching a ride. Then head down and see how the team is shaping up. And of course the Titletown district just west of the stadium will never disappoint. Fun playgrounds, outdoor beer gardens and activities for the whole family await in the summertime. OR wait for winter to ice skate, go tubing and enjoy a hot cocoa from 46 Below.

Family Fun Mr. Rogers is famous for saying “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” At the Children’s Museum of Green Bay, learning and play converge. Children are provided with an interactive environment where they can connect with adults and where play inspires a passion for lifelong learning. The staff at the Children’s Museum say it best, “Where kids play to learn, and parents learn to play.”

The Children’s Museum focuses on STEM learning: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The museum has various age-appropriate, hands-on, sensory-focused exhibits. Including an exhibit of the entire digestive system. Kids get to BE the food by climbing up a giant tongue into a gaping mouth. They can crawl through tunnels mimicking a human digestive tract and exit using the slide. They do this all while learning vocabulary of the human body and how the body processes food.

The Children’s Museum started as a mobile museum, “Great Explorations” in 1989. With the support of the community we fast forward to June of 2018; a brand new state-of-the-art facility. Their new location at 1230 Bay Beach Road, is a family-friendly location which also boasts The Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary and Bay Beach Amusement Park. It has become a hub for local and visiting families alike.

Each exhibit has explicit learning objectives and specific development standards. The Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standard Steering Committee is in partnership with the Children’s Museum of Green Bay. You are able to see which developmental goal your child is achieving while at the Museum.

Museums

As early as 1933, forward-thinking members of the Brown County Historical Society (BCHS) acquired the Cotton House to secure its legacy as one of the oldest structures in the county. In 1938, the 1840s structure was moved from its original location on Webster Avenue to the site of Camp Smith, a shortlived 1820s military experiment. For the next forty years, the Cotton House served as the museum for the BCHS. After receiving a large bequest, BCHS president and local attorney Robert Flatley established a committee to renew efforts to build a historic park. The committee, chaired by Dorothy Straubel Wittig, included such visionaries as Amanda Cobb, Len Schober, Michael Raymaker, William Servotte and Rev. Dean Kilgust. By 1970, the committee realized that the project needed the partnership of the Department of Natural Resources to realize the original concept. The work to open a historic park continued for the next ten years while the committee negotiated the details with the state and local government. After intense lobbying, the land was eventually transferred to the DNR, providing a historically rich site upon which to build the park. By 1975, four of the area’s most historic buildings were relocated to the site, including original structures from the Fort Howard military installation. On May 1, 1977, Heritage Hill State Historical Park opened to the public, bringing to fruition the dream that started in the 1930s. 1-888-867-3342 | WWW.GREENBAY.COM

The mission of Heritage Hill Historical State Park is to enrich the lives of others by sharing the vibrant cultural and historic ties that bind our diverse community together. Managed by the Heritage Hill Corporation, Heritage Hill State Historical Park is located on fifty-four acres of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources land within the Village of Allouez. To the east rises the Niagara Escarpment, the geological remnant of the forces that created the Great Lakes, while to the west flows the Fox River – a gateway to Lake Michigan. Today, the Park houses twenty-six original and reconstructed buildings representing historical and cultural developments relevant to Northeast Wisconsin from the 1600s to the present. It is within this physical setting that Heritage Hill offers a wide range of experientially based cultural programs focusing on the lives of those who shaped the region’s history. Annually, over 50,000 visitors of all ages enjoy the Heritage Hill experience. With a focus on education, HHSP serves over 15,000 students each school year. Led by first-person interpreters, HHSP offers visitors of all ages a unique window to the past through authentic environments that heighten the learning experience. Additionally, our unique events offer the public a wide range of cultural activities. Michael Telzrow, Executive Director, Heritage Hill State Park As Michael so eloquently noted, the human inclination to save and secure the past is paramount to our future. Which is why Green Bay’s historical organizations and museums are wonderful places to learn about not just Green Bay history, but human history. Take a peak at all the historic places to visit and our local museums on page 53 of this guide. | 25

Without exception, humans have a common inclination to save remnants of our past. On a personal level, it is the small reminders that we often value the greatest. Perhaps an album of Polaroid photographs depicting long ago holidays, or the miscellaneous items of our school days tucked away in a cigar box provide the personal link to a cherished moment in time. On a larger scale we maintain museums to house millions of artifacts that have the power to provide structure and sense to our collective timeline. The preservation an interpretation of historic buildings also opens a window to the past. Make no mistake, however, this attachment to the past goes beyond mere nostalgia, or a fascination with “things” of a bygone era. It provides a sense of place and attachment and makes us who we are today. So, it is not surprising that an area as rich in history as ours would foster and maintain a healthy link to its past.

An Artist's Journey

to Green Bay

The Green Bay area is filled to the brim with culture, art, music and talented artists and musicians that grace our community with Gregory Frederic of CrewlArt is no exception. Fredric is a modern eclectic acrylic painter born in Portau-Prince, Haiti.

after high school. His younger sister had just unique story about how they came to call passed away. He was lost Green Bay home, their artistic style and with no clear direction. inspirations that transformed their craft. Knowing his knack for drawing, a friend introduced him to a group of artists His inspiration comes from the wit and movement of in Haiti. This was the first time Frederic held a Surrealism and the geometric forms of Cubism. This paintbrush in his hand. style was forged by his love for artists like Salvador charm and beauty. Each have their own

Dalhi and Pablo Picasso. But there have been many artists along his journey who have played mentorship roles and provided inspiration and opportunities.

 A WORLD AWAY Creativity was not something that was encouraged upon Frederic as a young boy in Haiti. He would doodle his way through class, only to have the teachers swat his fingers as punishment. Haiti has a rich artististic history, but when in school, it was expected students focus only on their studies. Frederic felt an urge to create, but he didn’t know where he wanted to go on his artistic journey. Or how to get there. He had dreams of becoming an architect – but where to start? The beginning of Frederic’s artistic journey started 26 |

 A PASSION FOUND Not only did those new friends put a paintbrush in Frederic’s hand, more importantly, they provided the space and freedom for him to not be afraid to create, and encouraged this young artist trying to find his voice. The group collaborated to create a mural on a large blank wall for the World Health Organization in Haiti. He continued working for WHO, while also selling some commissioned paintings. Frederic hosted his first solo exhibition in 2011. To his astonishment, he sold 14 original paintings. It was this show when Frederic realized people appreciated what he did. He still didn’t know exactly where art would bring him, but he knew he could make things people wanted. DISCOVER GREEN BAY 2022 DESTINATION GUIDE

 ART AND LOVE “Starving artists” is an idiom for a reason. To earn extra money, Frederic worked as a private security guard for United States mission trips to Haiti. A girl named Amy was a part of a group and art brought them together. Amy played piano and enjoyed creating her own art. After the mission Amy headed home to a place unknown to Frederic. Green Bay, Wisconsin. They remained in touch and Frederic made several trips over the next few years. In 2013 he moved to Green Bay. Gregory and Amy were married a year later. They’re now raising their family together and running CrewlArt.

 A NEW LAND AND NEW BUSINESS Part of Haitian culture is coming up with fun things to call friends and loved ones. And Crewl is Frederic’s childhood nickname. Crewl spawned from Frederic’s older friends who watched his mother leave him home alone. They thought that made Frederic cool. Urban Dictionary describes crewl as ‘crazy cool.’ And by all accounts, crewl fits Frederic.

When Frederic moved to Green Bay in 2013, the public art scene was in its infancy. Now there are murals and sculptures all over the city. It has grown tremendously and is always continuously evolving. Frederic has one piece of public art available for viewing in Green Bay – the vibrant mural covering Lil' Jamaica Restaurant’s building. Green Bay has a diverse population with artists representing each group. Frederic wants everyone to support these artists. He says if you’re new to art do not just focus on one style or one medium, but explore it all. There is appreciation to be found in anything someone creates. His ultimate goal is to have the arts in Green Bay be at the top of conversations when he tells people he’s from here. “The people of Green Bay are so nice. When I put myself here, they embraced me. They accepted my

Frederic also likes the play-on-words of when people first hear CrewlArt, they assume “cruel”. They’re surprised that his art is full of bright colors, love and emotion; there’s nothing cruel about it. In fact, he’s inspired by music and light. “Music is something that brings me to another place. As an artist, I take what music makes me feel and I try to pass that along through my own art.”

 BUILDING AN ART COMMUNITY “I paint about love. I use the color that’s inside me. Everything I feel, I paint. Everything I paint, I feel. If you can feel it, you can paint it.” Frederic paints in his backyard studio. He walks from his home, through a trail of art, to arrive at his creative sanctuary. He travels to art shows all over Wisconsin and is now expanding throughout the Midwest. His favorite show continues to be Green Bay’s August event: ArtStreet, because that’s where it all started in the United States for him. 1-888-867-3342 | WWW.GREENBAY.COM

true nature. It was like I had been living here forever,” Frederic said. “I’m so proud to live here and see what’s happening. The arts community is growing fast. I’m proud to be part of Green Bay history.” How does Frederic know when a piece of his work is done? “When I sign it,” he said. He continues to leave his proverbial signature on the Green Bay community through his art with no end in sight. Schedule a studio tour or shop Fredric’s art on his website crewlart.com, or visit him at the many art shows he attends. | 27

A Slice of Italy Beer, brats, cheese. That’s what most expect when visiting Green Bay. But, there’s so much more. Our eclectic food scene throughout our communities is bursting with flavor and excitement - and you’ll discover legendary eats with a local flavor and global influence. We have fine dining options throughout our area steakhouses, seafood, and the Wisconsin classic - plenty of supper clubs. If you’re the more casual type, you’re in the right place. The football capital of the world is stocked with plenty of sports bars, pubs and grills to choose from. All have great burgers, fries, wings, sandwiches and more.

But what is surprising to our Green Bay visitors; you can taste your way around the globe right here. From traditional Mexican, to Irish pubs, classic Indian, Japanese sushi and of course a little bit of Italy is always right around the corner. Didn’t think you’d walk into a restaurant in Green Bay, Wisconsin and regularly hear Italian being spoken at the tables around you? Think again. Because at La Nostra Strada (or Strada Pizzeria for short), it happens on a regular basis. Why? Strada has quickly become an Italian favorite because of its unique and traditional Italian Street 28 |

Pizza. Inspired by the owner’s Italian heritage and the family’s time living in Italy, they saw a place in the market for pizza done the Roman way. Walking the streets of Italy, pizza carts are as frequent as hot dog stands in New York City. You can grab a slice anywhere you go! And now, that is right here on De Pere’s east side at 109 N Broadway. When you walk in the brick facade your senses (yes all of them) are immediately stimulated by the fresh dailymade dough crackling in the stone oven. Your eyes are drawn to the display case with unique flavors of Italian style pizza, cooked fresh before your eyes. Every detail is meant not only to make your tummy grumble, but create a community around one essential human need - great food. Strada Pizzeria was built out of love and passion for pizza, people and community. Their head chef is so passionate about pizza that he attended a specialty pizza school - just to bring this flavor and the world of pizza to our community. And you’ll never feel like a stranger or “tourist” at Strada. Their staff loves what they do and the people they serve. La Nostra Strada Pizzaria, pizza our way. Hops, Vino and Spirits Green Bay, and Wisconsin for that matter, is known for its thriving community of spirit distillers, wineries and (surprise) breweries. And our local scene will not disappoint. From countryside vineyards to tiny tap rooms, Green Bay has something for all tastes. There’s nothing like taking in the flavors that local winemakers and brewers have crafted. Locally grown hops and regional grapes bottled up to take home and bring a piece of our region back with you.

One little secret that may surprise you is the fact that Green Bay shares a unique trait that puts our grapes on par with globally recognized winemaking regions. Our peaceful community sits near the 44th parallel - the same as Tuscany, Italy and Bordeaux, France. One winery in particular has taken keen advantage of our exceptional growing region. Aptly named, Parallel 44 Vineyard & Winery is located just east of Green Bay. It was founded out of a passion for wine by husband and wife team Steve Johnson and Maria Milano. But where does this passion come from and why 30 |

does it make Parallel 44 unique? Maria’s Italian-born father always had wine in the house – it was part of his culture. A culture that he would pass along to family, friends and of course his daughter. As Maria says “wine was about gathering with family and friends, sharing conversation and fun.”. He made sure to share his passion, often delivering wine to neighbors. Steve grew up in Northeast Wisconsin and his family had a history of farming in the area. Talk about a perfect combination! Steve’s dad even helped plant the first grapes in the vineyard back when it was founded in 2005. Today, Parallel 44 provides unique and experiential offerings while keeping the wine at the center of everything they do. You can taste their wine, tour the vineyards, attend events and even join their wine club. Make sure Parallel 44 is on your list of stops in Green Bay - and don’t forget to take a bottle home to share with friends. It’s what Maria’s father would do. Explore your wild side It’s in our name – so it shouldn’t be surprising that there’s plenty of sports and recreation opportunities to be found in Green Bay – especially on the water.

Golf Believe or not - the frozen tundra is thawed for most of the year, and makes for spectacular golf conditions. In fact - Wisconsin is one of the top golf destinations in the United States! Whether you’re a competitive, nearly-scratch golfer or a weekend warrior trying to break 100 for the first time, there are friendly, challenging courses for you in and around Green Bay. Start your golf adventure at Thornberry Creek at Oneida. The official golf course of the Green Bay Packers and host to the LPGA Classic boasts some of the areas finest public golf. You’ll tee off at hole one placing your drive over a giant mound featuring the unforgettable “G” logo. Once you’re off, the course provides plenty of challenges, waterways, undulation and tricky greens. And as always, end your round in the clubhouse with your choice of beverage and entree.

Green Bay’s waterfront, the banks of the Fox River and surrounding natural beauty provide vast opportunities for fishing, hiking, boating, tours or any other activity you’re looking for. Don’t worry if you’re not an expert fisherman, or maybe have never hit the water, there are plenty of guide services.

Beyond Football Don’t be shocked – there’s more than just football for the sports lover in Green Bay. Our community is the home to Division 1 and Division 3 college athletics programs with top tier

Then make your way to Greenleaf, just south of the city, to the spectacular 27hole Wander Springs Golf Course. This easily walkable course offers challenges for any skill level and plenty of holes to swing the day away. These are just two of the many, many courses within short “driving” distance from the center of the city. Each and every one of our area’s courses provide a wide variety of golf experiences. From traditional wood lined fairways to open links style golfing you’re sure to find the course (or courses) that will provide a one-of-a-kind golf experience. In Green Bay you’re also just a short day-trip drive away from courses that have hosted major events like the PGA Championship, US Open and the Ryder Cup. Plan your golf weekend to Northeast Wisconsin today! Discover more area courses on page 55 of this guide.

History and Culture

are Built into the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center Shekoli – Hello – From Oneida Nation From the moment you enter the parking lot, just across the street from Austin Straubel International Airport, you are welcomed by the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center and the Oneida Nation.

Once you enter the spectacular, newly renovated, lobby you’ll find touches that are a nod to the historic Oneida people and their heritage. Your eye will immediately catch the sprawling, spiral crystal chandelier

descending from the high vaulted ceiling in the lobby. A subtle tribute to Sky Woman, the creator of earth in Oneida culture. You will notice beneath your feet - the one-of-a-kind floor tile pattern in the shape of a turtle’s shell – an important spiritual animal for the Oneida people. As you walk toward the pod-style front desk your senses will be tickled by the homemade fair from SkyWorld Coffee & Custard where you can enjoy coffee, 74 |

craft sandwiches, fresh pastries and a Wisconsin favorite – frozen custard. In the very back of the lobby you will notice a glass case adorned with beautiful art. This display showcases “Woodland Indian Arts” from Oneida artists and other Native artists across the state. Make sure to take in the art, culture and beauty of their creations. Enjoy your overnight stay in one of the refreshed guestrooms that now feature vinyl flooring and keep you close to all the action of the attached Oneida Casino. When making your way to the attached Casino, be sure to take notice of the close to 30,000 square feet of flexible meeting space that can host any event that a visiting group may need. You will find even more culture knitted within your stay at this luxurious Green Bay hotel. The Cedar & Sage Grill House is one of Green Bay’s newest and finest eateries. The chefs hand select ingredients from Oneida Farms and other local merchants. The name “Cedar & Sage” is an ode to the healing properties of these two elements in the Oneida culture. Purcell’s Beer Garden is a perfect spot to quench your thirst as well as time to stop, slow down, enjoy the peace of nature on their outdoor patio and gather with friends old and new for games and laughs over a brew. Plan your trip to Green Bay today and make sure the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center is on your short list of places to stay, play and dine.
