Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary

Want to experience a destination…we mean, really experience a destination? Ask a local. So that’s just what we did. From young adults to families and even students. We sent the word out far and wide and asked, “as locals what are some things you LOVE to do in the Greater Green Bay Region?”

 THINGS WE LOVE TO DO Kids have the most genuine opinions of all. And honestly, they know how to have the most fun! With this in mind, we went straight to the source. Kacy Schilling is a fourth-grade teacher at Dickinson Elementary School in De Pere. She asked her students - what do you like to do in Green Bay and why? Here are her classes’ recommendations. Where: Titletown Why: There are tons of scheduled special events. I see so many kids from school and my neighborhood there. Tubing in the winter is super rad. In the summer you can roll down the hill, check out the views, or watch a movie on movie night. You can play football on a full-sized field. There is a playground with ninja type equipment. The skating rink is filled with kids of all ages, activities, and an ice skating loop that brings you under the building and by a toasty firepit. Where: Drift Inn Why: Order the burger and mozzarella sticks and you’ll know why. Plan on a nap after, cause you’ll be exhausted from how delicious it is. If you’re super polite and use your best manners the nice ladies will offer you a full sized candy bar. Where: Ashwaubomay Lake Why: There is a sandy beach, play equipment, diving boards, rafts, and concession stands. You can host awesome parties there too. Where: Capital Credit Union Park for Green Bay Glory Why: Pre-professional competition for female soccer players. Tons of activities and food at all the games.

Ariens Hill, Titletown

Where: Capital Credit Union Park for Rockers Games Why: I love baseball and my family can’t always get to Milwaukee to see the Brewers. Where: Board and Brush Why: I went to a birthday party there and I designed and painted a carrying case for making Smores. It’s so cute and easy to stay organized. There are tons of options for things to create. Where: Bay Beach Amusement Park Why: The rides are awesome. I always get more tickets than I can even use. It’s right on the Bay and just has a classic vibe to it. Where: Castle Carts Why: Go Carts, mini golf, batting cages. Everything I love in one spot. Where: Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary Why: Animals, animals, and more animals. Beautiful trails and features to keep you interested while walking around. Where: Wequiock Falls Why: My class took a field trip here and if was magical. Look closely and you’ll find rocks with prehistoric fossils in them. Hint: Look for shell patterns.

Bay Beach Amusement Park

Where: Bayshore County Park Why: Skip rocks, hike limestone cliffs, and play on a giant pirate ship playground.

1-888-867-3342 | WWW.GREENBAY.COM

Where: Joannes Aquatic Center Why: Best place to swim around town. Where: City Deck Landing Why: Water to run and play in. Live music. Shops and restaurants. | 15

LOCAL PERSPECTIVE ON THE FOOD SCENE By Jessica Diederich Mangiare

As someone who looks for any excuse to take advantage of our food scene, I’m happy to share my local perspective on some great places you won’t want to miss while you’re here along with a list of must try menu items. Date night- While Chives is well known, it’s still quaint, which makes it easy to have a conversation. I love their Chicken & Goat Cheese Wontons, Classic Steak Fritte and HoHo Cake. Mangiare provides a modern vibe with an Italian twist and amazing service. Try the Toasted Gnocchi, Bolognese Tagliatelle and Spumoni Bomba for dessert. Stella’s offers a great atmosphere and equally great patio. The Beet Salad and Spicy Italian Sausage Pasta with a side order of flat crispy fries make a great meal for sharing.

Stella's

Eat at the bar- When I want a nice meal but don’t have a reservation (or I’m eating solo), here are my top three choices. Plae Bistro is a local hot spot, the food is consistently delicious and they’re open for lunch and dinner. I love their Brussel Sprout Bruschetta, Chilian Sea Bass and Plae Cake. While the main level of Chefusion is reservations only, walk-ins are welcome upstairs and you might even catch live music on the weekends. Consider ordering the Wedge Salad with Roquefort Ice Cream, South African Lobster Tail and Lemon Butter Cake. Republic Chophouse offers incredible cocktails and an upscale vibe. My favorite menu items are Spicy Rock Shrimp, literally any steak on the menu and a huge slice of Red Velvet Cake. Lunch Spots- Vintage Cantina has a colorful atmosphere and serves up amazing street tacos, homemade guacamole and quickles. A’Bravo is more formal and I’m always torn between the Rustic Lovers Salad and the Prosciutto Chicken. I also love Fresh Kind where I can grab a quick, healthy lunch. My favorite bowl is the Lemon Herb Rotisserie Chicken. Happy Hour- For a tasteful atmosphere and a glass of wine, I go to Amphora. Their Paprika Almonds and the Red Wine Butter Popcorn are unforgettable. When I’m in the mood for a Bloody Mary, I love Hinterland Brewery in the Titletown District. You’ll want to make one of their locally brewed beers your chaser and don’t forget to try the Cheese Curds and Fried Brussel Sprout Leaves. 16 |

DISCOVER GREEN BAY 2024 DESTINATION GUIDE

By Jackie Krutz After living in Los Angeles for 15 years, we moved to Green Bay as it offered us a community that combined big city fun and small town charm. Here are some of the places we frequent and always recommend!

Titletown District

 SMALL TOWN CHARM

Voyageurs Bakehouse: We love starting off our morning with a Coffee Wizardz draft latte and a sourdough croissant. On our way out, we always take home a loaf of their artisan sourdough bread. Our favorites are the Pullman and Italian, but you can’t go wrong with any of their baked goods! Titletown: During winter, we embrace the chill and like to stay active outdoors. One of our favorite things to do is go ice skating and tubing under the twinkling lights of Titletown. It feels so magical, especially when it snows! If you come during the holidays, they have a light show that is projected on the side of Lambeau Field, which is a must see! Always check their calendar, as there is something happening every day. Amphora Wine Bar: As a family of foodies, nothing compares to the shareable plates, great selection of wines and unique craft cocktails at Amphora. We always order the NY Strip Tartare, as it’s our absolute favorite! It’s so good that visitors have ranked it as “the best they have ever had!”

 TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY By Rashad Cobb There are dozens of things that locals and visitors alike can enjoy throughout the Greater Green Bay community. For me, the opportunities that I most enjoy are the OnBroadway, Inc. Wednesday Night Farmer’s Market and the City of Green Bay’s Baird Creek Trailway. The Wednesday Farmer’s Market is an opportunity for community members to come together to enjoy music, local vendors, and each other’s company. It’s an event that I have been attending for about fifteen years and it’s been awesome to see the event begin to reflect the diversity that exists in the community. Baird Creek Trailway provides a variety of outdoor experiences that can be accessed for free to residents right in the middle of the city. Whether it’s mountain biking, running, viewing wildlife, or just leisurely enjoying the paved paths and unpaved winding trails, the trailway provides a peaceful environment where one can find much needed relaxation. 1-888-867-3342 | WWW.GREENBAY.COM

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN By Matt Buchanan Whenever I visit a new city for the first time, I always have to check out the downtown. It’s there, at a city’s historic center, where you can often find what makes that community special. And downtown Green Bay is no exception. Some of my favorite destinations in all of Greater Green Bay are in the downtown, and they include: CityDeck: This riverfront boardwalk and park provide a scenic place to walk, relax, and enjoy the waterfront views of the Fox River. It’s activated year-round with live music and festivals in the summer months and holiday lights in the winter months. Titletown Brewery Roof Tap: My favorite view in all of Green Bay! Located in a historic repurposed cannery building in downtown’s Broadway District, the Titletown Brewery Roof Tap is situated atop the brewery. The Roof Tap offers terrific local craft beers and amazing views of the Fox River and city skyline. Authentically local experiences: Nowhere else in the Green Bay area can you find a greater concentration of locally-owned restaurants, specialty shops, performance venues, and public art, all of which you can experience on foot. While you can find so much to do in all corners of our community, I will always recommend visitors spend time in downtown Green Bay. Not only does it offer some of the region’s best destinations, but it also has the highest concentration of authentic Green Bay experiences that speak to who we are as a community.

 GREEN BAY IS HOME By Brooke Hafs

Downtown Green Bay

18 |

I grew up in a small town referring to Green Bay as my city. It felt huge and intimidating to me as a child. After having my own children and traveling abroad to see other cities, my perspective has changed a bit. This is a place where you can get the best of what a city has to offer while feeling safe, secure, and running into a friendly face most places that you go. It is big enough to offer delicious restaurant options that suit whatever type of food you’re in the mood for that day. I have come to love the many breweries that offer a youthful and hip place to spend time and play games. The retail shops are quirky, unique and sell products you can’t find online. Events are plentiful and bursting with different kinds of people and experiences. The downtown is thriving, and thoughtful public art can be found around every corner. Green Bay is the place I take my kids to have fun, try new things, and meet people from all walks of life. I want them to grow up knowing Green Bay is a wonderful city where you can plant your roots and have a happy life. There are good jobs here and the cost of living is affordable. The change of seasons creates an ever-changing environment that is interesting. People here are kind and hard working. It is the best place to live. DISCOVER GREEN BAY 2024 DESTINATION GUIDE

OUTDOOR FAMILY FUN By Ben Krumenauer Smart Cow Yogurt Bar

As a family that enjoys being outdoors and exploring, we never run out of exciting places to visit. Outdoors is the name of the game! Five different personalities in our family can be tough to navigate, and yet a few places always rise to the top of the list: UW-Green Bay Arboretum: 290 acres of trails, natural habitat and recreation all within the UWGB campus. I ran, bicycled and explored the Niagara Escarpment as a college student, and now I get to bring our family to the same trails and build new memories. Perhaps you can even find the hidden chapel in the woods. Smart Cow Yogurt Bar: Looking to cool down in the summer or bring a bit of sass to a winter day, frozen yogurt is the way to go. We stumbled upon Smart Cow and haven’t looked back. Our family loves the self-serve atmosphere and the abundance of toppings and varieties of yogurt. White Chocolate Mousse anyone?! Village of Bellevue Summer Recreation Programs: We stumbled upon Bellevue’s Life Guide one day and couldn’t help but turn the pages. Bellevue highlights their modern parks with several large events including Rockin’ in Josten, Food Truck Rallies and Movie in the Park, to name a few. Many a humid, unairconditioned night, were saved thanks to face painting and tasty food truck treats. From our family to yours, we hope you enjoy the community!

The Man Behind

BAY BEACH Nestled on the shores of Green Bay, Bay Beach has stood as a unique treasure and beacon of joy for locals and visitors alike for decades. From that first taste of fun on the Granny Bugs to the thrill of the first (and second and third and one thousandth) ride on the Zippin Pippin, Bay Beach has played a special role in so many lives. Amidst all this core memory making, there's one man who's been behind the scenes for almost 30 years– Jason Arnoldi. If you're not familiar with Jason, you're not alone. He keeps a low profile and will be the first to tell you that Bay Beach's success is about so much more than just him, frequently lauding his co-workers, past and present, for their hard work and innovation. But his unique relationship with the park is a testament to a lifetime dedicated to its enchanting allure.  WHEN YOU KNOW YOU KNOW Jason grew up in Green Bay and, like countless other kids in the community, spent summers at Bay Beach. His first ride? The Scrambler, one of the park's most popular attractions, and the first ride he would go on to operate after getting hired as a seasonal worker in 1996. 22 |

While 19-year-old Jason might not have known he would one day become the Operations Manager, he did know this was more than just a job – it was a whole world of fun, camaraderie, and shared moments. "It always felt like a home," he recalls, "I think I only had three days off my first year there. I loved it, so I just kept picking up more hours. Then we'd all hang out after work and do it all over the next day." In the years that followed, Jason's dedication to the park did not go unnoticed. He quickly moved from ride operator to seasonal supervisor, then seasonal assistant manager. In 2014, he officially became Bay Beach's operations manager. Throughout it all, there was never a doubt in his mind that this was the job for him. "I just knew," says Jason.  THE ART OF OPERATION As operations manager of the park, Jason began to solidify his imprint on Bay Beach's legacy. Steering the park through the ebb and flow of seasons, he became not only a leader but a guardian of its spirit. "I consider myself very lucky to be able to do what I do," Jason reflects. At the heart of Jason's stewardship at Bay Beach lies a commitment to make the park a haven of inclusivity and safety, ensuring that the magic of Bay Beach is accessible to everyone. For Jason, it's not just about the rides; it's about creating an environment where all are welcome. One of the defining features of Bay Beach is its commitment to affordability. Tickets have remained at a humble 25 cents for decades, a deliberate choice by Jason to maintain accessibility. "I don't want to nickel and dime people," he asserts, emphasizing that the park is a public space for all to enjoy. Safety is another cornerstone of Jason's tenure. Recognizing the responsibility that comes with operating an amusement park, he implemented rigorous safety protocols and a comprehensive training program. This commitment extends beyond the mechanical intricacies of the rides; it's a pledge to every individual who steps into the park.

is not a solo performance but a team of committed individuals who grace the park each season. Each summer, approximately 300 seasonal staff members become the face of Bay Beach, and what makes the experience truly special is that about half of them return year after year. This retention speaks volumes about the amazing atmosphere that Jason has worked tirelessly to foster. The result is a team that is not only efficient in their roles but also passionate about contributing to the shared experience of visitors.  PAST SUCCESSES & FUTURE PROJECTS Bay Beach has undergone some major transformative projects under Jason's leadership as well. He was part of resurrecting the legendary Zippin Pippin as assistant manager of the park in 2011, and has worked closely with the Friends of Bay Beach and the city on its biggest initiative yet– bringing the beach back to Bay Beach.

New rides, like the Nebula Z and the latest Ferris Wheel additions, were selected with accessibility in mind. Jason saw the importance "My favorite part is on opening day of ensuring that the thrill of Bay when you see everyone come back and Beach could be experienced by you see the kids get to ride the rides, individuals with varying physical especially if we have something new," beams Jason, "I get to feel like all that abilities. work we put in during the off-season

One of the biggest projects on the horizon is the renovation of the park's historic central pavilion. Originally constructed in 1909, this iconic structure has witnessed the evolution of Bay Beach from its early days as a dance hall, bar, and bathhouse to its most recent use as a gathering space with restrooms, seating, and food.

Wine’d Down

in Green Bay

When you think of Green Bay, Wisconsin, among the first things that come to mind is beer. And it’s true, we do love our brews and are home to many of the best breweries in the state. But, there’s a little-known fact (or maybe two) that makes the Greater Green Bay region a budding wine region. Besides being a great tourist destination, Green Bay has one important element in common with Bordeaux, France, and Tuscany, Italy. That’s the 44th parallel. The latitude lines that cross the globe make for some of the best wine-grape-growing climates in the world. Now, of course, we have to get a little creative - since we have harsher winters. However, important elements like annual rainfall totals, length of daylight, and seasonal climate share similarities with these renowned wine regions. We also are situated on the Niagara Escarpment - a land formation that stretches through Wisconsin up to Canada and, yes, ending at Niagara Falls. This unique land mass not only creates stunning views and fun recreation opportunities; the topography of the land allows for better air circulation and frost protection. It also provides a diverse soil complex including limestone, shale, and clay. Winemakers in our region 32 |

are currently working to get our region certified as an American Viticultural Area - a designated wine grapegrowing region. So sit back and relax - it’s time to wine’d down right here in Green Bay:

The Green Bay Explorer: Outdoor Recreation in Northeast Wisconsin The outdoor activities in the Green Bay area are truly boundless, and it's one of the reasons people love it here! Whether you're visiting for a weekend or making Green Bay your permanent residence, there's something for every outdoor lover to enjoy all year round.

t FISHING With opportunities to fish all year round and miles and miles of lakes, rivers, and the world's largest freshwater estuary, Green Bay really is a freshwater angler's paradise. Head out onto the Fox River in the spring to catch a monster walleye and musky, catch panfish and bass from your kayak on peaceful Lily Lake just 20 minutes East, or take a trip to Bay Shore County Park 20 minutes North and catch walleye, perch, and trout from boat or shore. Anglers can even enjoy winter in Green Bay, with plenty of opportunities to ice fish on both the Fox River and Lake Michigan.

RFAT BIKING

 DISC GOLFING The Green Bay disc golf scene is HUGE, and you could spend a whole week in the area just traveling from course to course, hitting the chains. Some favorite courses in the area include Baird Creek, Pamperin Park, Pinecrest, and UW-Green Bay. Willing to drive a little farther? Head about 40 minutes south to Plamann Park in Appleton or Rolling Ridge in Chilton (considered a pro-tier course). Lastly, if you're looking for something a little more laid back with the kiddos, head over to Legion Park in De Pere for a smaller course with a playground and pool nearby.

 HIKING, BIKING, & WALKING Miles and miles of trails crisscross the Green Bay area, from paved trails that offer a smooth bike ride or a leisurely walk to more rugged hiking trails. Get into nature for a hike at Baird Creek, Maribel Caves, Bay Shore Park, Fonferek's Glen, Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve, Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary, Sherwood

Fat biking has taken off as a popular outdoor activity in recent years, giving people a chance to stay in the saddle even in the winter months. Luckily, Green Bay's miles and miles of trail make it an ideal fat biking destination. Visitors can find fat biking trails at the Reforestation Camp, Baird Creek Greenway, and He-Nis-Ra Park. They can also be found in De Pere at Hilly Haven Golf Course, and in Suamico at Calavera Springs Park. Rentals are also available at the NEW Zoo Adventure Park right next to the Reforestation Camp and at local bike shops Broken Spoke Bike Studio and Pete's Garage. Looking for a little extra guidance and practice? Try Broken Spoke's Wednesday night cycling group rides or Suamico Bike Company's Thursday night group rides. 42 |

Forest Park, or He-Nis-Ra Park. Get a run, walk, or bike ride along the Fox River Trail or East River Trail, or enjoy the view of the bay on the UW-Green Bay Arboretum Trail. Looking for something a little more challenging? Pack a bag and try Mountain-Bay State Trail, one of Wisconsin's longest rail-trails spanning 83 miles between Rib Mountain and Green Bay. Or try the orienteering course at Baird Creek and test your navigation mettle!

 SNOWSHOEING & CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING We don't let the cold weather stop us from enjoying the great outdoors here in Green Bay! One of the best ways to experience the beauty of a Northeast Wisconsin winter is snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Enjoy both snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on 9 miles of snowshoe trails and 34 miles of crosscountry ski trails at Brown County Parks spread over the Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve (where you can rent snowshoes on weekends), Neshota Park, and the Reforestation Camp. You'll also find trails at city parks, including Baird Creek, He-Nis-Ra, Colburn Park, and McAuliffe Park. If you're looking for an extra special experience, check out Barkhausen's Facebook page for info on self-guided candlelight hiking on select evenings during the winter.

SNOWMOBILING If you're looking for something a little speedier than snowshoeing, there are 98 miles of marked and groomed snowmobile trails to enjoy in Brown County. Check out the Brown County Parks Department website for a map of all county snowmobile trails and live condition reports. Just be sure to steer clear of the

1-888-867-3342 | WWW.GREENBAY.COM

Cat Island Chain in the Howard area–the restoration of this delicate ecosystem has created obstacles for snowmobilers as they travel along the West shore of the bay.

KAYAKING Kayaking is one of the most peaceful and immersive ways to enjoy Green Bay's waterways. Launch your kayak from Green Isle Park into the East River for a calm paddle and some great bird-watching, or cast a line into Lily Lake to the East or Loon Lake to the North in Shawano (great for catching pan fish, bass, pike, and even walleye). Rent a kayak from Zeller's or the Fox River Kayaking Company and enjoy the urban kayaking experience on the Fox River. On the West side of the city in Howard, meander down Duck Creek all the way to Pamperin Park, where you can stop for a picnic and some playtime. If you want to catch a beautiful sunset over the bay and challenge yourself to a paddle requiring a little more experience, head into the bay itself. Green Bay Sail & Paddle even offers Intro to Kayaking classes and kayak rentals right on the bay.

HUNTING Wisconsin is known for some premier hunting opportunities, especially up in the Northwoods, but you might be surprised to find out that there are also some excellent hunting opportunities closer to the city. Several Brown County parks offer public hunting lands, including Barkhausen, Fonferek's Glen, Lily Lake, Neshota Park, Reforestation Camp, and Vande Hei Property. Visit the Brown County Parks Department website for a full list of guidelines and season dates.
