GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR

On behalf of City Council, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Charlottetown, the beating heart of Prince Edward Island. With the character of a big city and the soul of a small town, Charlottetown has an endless variety of cultural and sporting events, exquisite dining options, and gorgeous views.

Every street in our historic city tells a story, and we are thrilled that you are here to be a part of it. We hope you enjoy your time with us!

At Discover Charlottetown, we believe the best travel experiences are all about how a place makes you feel. And here, it’s easy to see why so many people say Charlottetown feels like home the moment they arrive. Our Island culture is built on genuine warmth and hospitality, our streets are safe and walkable, and life here carries an unmistakable sense of ease and charm.

Whether you're sinking your toes into our beaches, wandering our charming streets, enjoying world-class theatre, live music, or indulging in the freshest seafood, Charlottetown welcomes you in every season. Summers hum with patios, festivals, and waterfront energy, while cooler months bring crackling fireplaces, festive Christmas markets, and cozy escapes.

We’re grateful to live and work on this land, the traditional and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people, whose deep connection to Epekwitk (PEI) continues to shape the Island’s story. As we continue to learn and grow, we invite you to do the same—by embracing the history, culture, and spirit that makes this place so special.

Charlottetown is a place where everyone belongs. It has a way of refreshing your spirit—whether that’s what you were after or not.

We truly love our city, our Island, and the community that makes it so special. And we can’t wait to welcome you here.

See you soon,

We acknowledge that the land upon which Charlottetown sits is part of unceded Mi’kmaw territory. Epekwitk (Prince Edward Island) is located in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. We pay our respects to the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq who have occupied this Island for over 12,000 years. We honour the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which recognized Mi’kmaq rights and established an ongoing relationship between nations.

A RENEWED VISION

An Honest & Reflective Look at the History of Charlottetown

Although modern day Charlottetown on the surface is filled with a colourful mix of restored heritage buildings, beautiful shops & restaurants, and refreshing harbour views, the city’s history hasn’t always been so bright and charming. In fact, reminders of colonization are almost everywhere and there has been a lot of (un)learning and unpacking of our collective history over the last several years.

A BRIEF HISTORY

While we can’t ignore that being the Birthplace of Confederation was once one of Charlottetown’s biggest claims to fame, the history of this place is much fuller and a lot longer than that one event. During your visit to Charlottetown, you may want to take time to explore the various perspectives, including the injustices at play and those who were notably absent from deliberations in 1864, including the Mi'kmaq people.

These original inhabitants of Prince Edward Island called the Island Epekwitk (which means “lying in the water”) and have inhabited the land and waterways of the Island for over 12,000 years. Epekwitk’s history includes horror and heartbreak, with the takeover and occupation of Mi'kmaq land. It also consists of the largest Acadian Expulsion taking place across the Charlottetown Harbour at Skmaqn–Port-la-Joye–Fort Amherst, as well as slavery by government leaders, bigotry, and racism.

Charlottetown, as it's known today, can be traced back to the original French military settlement established on the site in 1720. From there, waves of immigration, from the French Acadians, to the British, to people from all over the world have also called this place home and helped to shape its history, landscape, culture, and architecture.

This history, despite its darkness, also includes outstanding people and events, with justice advocates ensuring the voices of the Mi'kmaq, Black people, women, and others were (and continue to be) heard. Charlottetown still has a long way to go, but is finally facing and acknowledging its shadows and working towards reconciliation where everyone feels accepted, valued, and respected.

A Timeless Year-Round Destination

Nestled in the heart of downtown Charlottetown, Victoria Row is the perfect blend of historic charm and contemporary culture. This bustling street, lined with beautiful 19th-century brick buildings, mature trees, and sun-drenched patios, is a must-visit destination for those seeking a unique mix of dining & shopping in a lively atmosphere. The Row's boutique shops, cozy cafés, and incredible restaurants create a palpable energy that locals and visitors alike can’t get enough of.

In the summer, the street becomes exclusively pedestrian, creating the ideal backdrop for Always on Stage, a dynamic music series that fills the air with the incredible sounds of local talent, adding an electric buzz to the atmosphere. Whether it's a crisp winter day or a warm summer evening, Victoria Row is always ready to captivate.

A Street Steeped in History

Victoria Row's striking red brick buildings date back to the mid1800s, originally home to a mix of businesses, hotels, and residences. Despite fires—most notably the devastating Great Fire of 1884—and the evolving needs of the area, much of the original character and architectural beauty remain intact. In 1997, the block was transformed into the pedestrian-friendly Victoria Row we know and love today, becoming an essential part of Charlottetown's vibrant identity.

Open During Renovations

Directly adjacent to Victoria Row is the Confederation Centre of the Arts, which is currently undergoing an exciting new transformation. Fortunately, Victoria Row continues to shine as a thriving, yearround destination. Its local businesses remain open and welcoming throughout every season, offering something fresh and exciting to enjoy.

Chef Ilona Daniel’s 5 Favourite Spots

When chefs are eating out, we tend to go where we can enjoy quality—bells and whistles not always necessary. We’re ever on the lookout for originality, passion, authenticity, and technique as much as flavour, and we respect and stay loyal to places that stay true to the food they serve. For me, I often seek out smaller, locally-owned restaurants who prepare their dishes with the kind of care you can actually taste!

Haru K-BBQ: Family-run restaurants are absolute treasures in my mind, and Haru K is certainly no exception. There are many traditional Korean dishes to choose from like bibimbap, Korean fried chicken, mandu, corn cheese, and my fav, japchae. Japchae is made with sweet potato noodles, beef and vegetables. I really could eat those noodles every day!

ADA: The doughnuts at Ada have a cult-like following and for good reason—each new doughnut drop brings people out in droves to enjoy a thoughtfully curated confection. The doughnuts are never greasy and have quality dough & ingredients. In fact, the best arguments are about which flavour has been the best to date. For the record, it’s the Dunkaroo doughnut… or maybe it’s the Rhubarb compote with cardamom infused cream? The debate continues.

AZTECA: Authentic Mexican food in the heart of Downtown Charlottetown! A vibrant, cozy restaurant serving up hearty servings of the classics—think enchiladas, guacamole, carnitas, tacos al pastor, and chilaquiles. If you ask if they have enmoladas available and they do, immediately order it! Enmoladas are enchiladas with a mole sauce, and they are stuffed with chicken. The mole is so deeply savoury with a singular blend of spices, chilies, and chocolate.

BOMBAY CUISINE: More than butter chicken, Bombay Cuisine has a bountiful menu filled lots of sharable plates, iconic curries, biryanis, and a vast array of vegetarian dishes that makes this meal not only flavourful, but also inclusive. No matter what you’re eating, the butter naan is a must.

VICINATO: I love menus with a sizable appetizer/sharable plates so you can switch up each bite. Gnocco fritto is a must order with fried pieces of pizza dough, mortadella and burrata, as is their ricotta montata—the whipped ricotta and peppered honey combo is otherworldly!

TASTE

You’ll quickly find out how much we love our sweet and savoury treats. A hot day calls for a scoop of the Island’s world-famous COWS ice cream or a giant Billy Timber's cone. For a quintessential Island dish, order up fresh, hand-cut PEI fries from Taters or The Chip Shack, or drop by Dave’s Lobster for a classic lobster roll.

SHOP

Whether it’s handcrafted jewellery, Island pottery or a stunning piece of art you’re in search of, the waterfront is the perfect place to find a unique PEI keepsake. Several merchants like Coastal Culture, My Little Stash, and How Bazaar! also offer comfy beach gear, funky clothing, and other accessories that complement the laid-back style of Island living.
