“We also focus a lot on meeting different travel demands from corporate clients, sports teams, wedding events, colleges and universities and younger school children heading to such field trip destinations as Washington, D.C., Atlanta, New York City, and Disney World in Orlando,” Hill said. “Our vehicles can be found in many different states, not just North Carolina. The other day I was looking at a map, and realized that we had equipment in every state on the East Coast, as well as in Tennessee and Alabama. “As with all the different transportation segments that we cater to, our corporate focus has really grown over the years. It helps that there are a lot of pharmaceutical and high tech companies located within our service region.”

G

LEARNING THE ROPES FROM AN EARLY AGE

rowing up in the transportation business is nothing new for many successful people who eventually operate bus/motorcoach companies. Hill is no different, having followed, as a teenager, in his mother’s footsteps. “In 1989, my mother, Brenda Wilson, started Black Tie Transportation, Inc., in Winston-Salem, NC, while I was in high school. I have been in the transportation industry ever since, learning every aspect of this business. This includes washing vehicles and becoming a limousine chauffeur to data entry and working with meeting planners,” Hill said. “It’s all been a great experience, and has helped me understand the many ‘ins’ and ‘outs’ of providing quality transportation services to a wide variety of customers. “In 2005, I bought the business from my mother, who retired. I came from the limousine and sedan transportation side of the industry, but soon saw the need to start operating larger vehicles as well. I felt I could do some things better with this type of equipment, along with relying on all that I had learned through the years.” Hill purchased his first minibus in 2009 and first motorcoach in 2012. He also soon expanded his transportation vision in other ways. “I purchased Blue Diamond Transportation, located in Raleigh, NC, in 2014. The previous owner ran the company for 25 years. Then, on November 1, 2018, I purchased Blue Ridge Charters, located in the Charlotte, NC, area. That company has also been around for a long time,” he said. when it comes to taking care of vehicles — from changing oil to changing transmissions and motors. There is also a plan in the works to eventually offer a service shop, at each location, for other operators. This would be especially helpful for those operators who experienced an equipment breakdown while in our area.” The entire fleet of the three transportation companies that Hill oversees consists of 80 to 90 vehicles. This includes sedans; vans; limousines; vintage cars; 27-, 32- and 35-passenger minibuses; 40passenger motorcoaches; and full-size motorcoaches that are entirely comprised of Prevost/Volvo equipment. “We have approximately 25 to 28 Prevosts/Volvos. This involves Prevost X and H models as well as the Volvo 9700,” Hill

said. “The service that Prevost provides with these vehicles has been very valuable to our companies. The Prevost parts department has also been invaluable. Our mechanics love working with their parts people, and Prevost will send a technician to a company’s facility if there is a serious issue with a vehicle. They stand by their products.” Hill said these Prevost and Volvo motorcoaches are well liked by customers, especially corporate clients and sports teams. “The ride is very smooth with these vehicles,” he added. Among the amenities found in many of the vehicles that the three North Carolina transportation providers offer include Wi-Fi, satellite TV and seat plug-ins for smartphones. Other items offered by company officials are less technical in nature, but often just as valued by passengers. This includes snacks, water and magazines. “Our passengers can also log in to see where their vehicle is located,” Hill said. “We now have cameras inside our vehicles as well that show both the driver and the passengers.”

eeping customers satisfied is a major objective for every successful business. This often means being available during off hours, and giving extra effort, when it comes to customer service. This practice is followed closely by Black Tie Bus Charters & Tours, Blue Diamond Transportation and Blue Ridge Charters, according to Hill.

“It’s a benefit for a lot of people today to be able to go straight to our internet reservation system to book a trip, and then receive a confirmation.”

“There are some bus/motorcoach companies that just operate 9 to 5, Monday through Friday. That is not us. We are a 24/7, 365 days a year operation. We have people answering our phones every day,” Hill said. “We are also very involved with today’s technology, all in an effort to satisfy today’s passengers.” This includes operating an extensive internet reservation system. “It’s a benefit for a lot of people today to be able to go straight to our internet reservation system to book a trip, and then receive a confirmation,” Hill said. “This service is seen as a luxury by many of our customers. We also employ a full-time marketing person who helps our companies grow with Google Ads, Facebook, Instagram, etc. It’s

great to be able to hire young people who help us become much more efficient, as a company, when it comes to technology. We can now monitor who is visiting our different social media platforms, helping us better understand which demographic is the most interested in which of our services, and from where in the country they are all located. This greatly helps our marketing efforts. “We also advertise on the radio and with newspapers. There remains value with these older forms of media. Personally, I still love the feel of a newspaper.”

enovation is the name of the game at the Rockford Mass Transit District (RMTD), of Rockford, IL, as the agency is working to complete an about $7 million project to upgrade its downtown transfer center.

RMTD operates 18 fixed-routes during weekdays and Saturdays, servicing the public transportation needs of the city of Rockford, and the adjacent communities of Loves Park and Machesney Park.

The multi-million dollar project to renovate RMTD’s 30-year-old downtown transfer center kicked off in February 2018. The project is projected to be completed in late spring 2019. With no local funds involved, about 50 percent of the renovation costs are being funded by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), with the rest coming from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). “The renovation is going to do several things to enhance our property,” said RMTD Marketing/Public Relations Specialist Lisa Brown, during a recent interview with Busline Magazine at the agency’s downtown facility. “For one, it is going to enlarge the footprint of the downtown transfer center, which is our main hub, as we are building an addition to the existing structure.”

A sawtooth configuration is a bus bay design where the curb is indented in a “sawtooth” pattern, allowing buses to enter and exit bus bays independently of other buses. The sawtooth configuration will allow drivers to pull in and out without having to back up their buses. It will also allow for better visibility, and is safer for both drivers and dispatchers, according to RMTD.

EXPLORING SERVICE OPTIONS

MTD is planning to launch a study to find out what its ridership would like to see in the way of expanded services. “We are on the cusp of starting a community-wide route study, which will include feedback from the community,” Brown said. “We will be hosting a link on our website that will enable people to take a transit survey and offer feedback, whether they are regular riders or not. “We are seeking information from riders about their experiences riding the bus, and what transportation needs they might see in their respective neighborhoods. For those who don’t regularly ride public transportation, we would like to know what might motivate them to take the bus.” Also, as a part of study, RMTD is planning to meet with current passengers face-to-face to hear what they have to say about public transportation.

A multi-million dollar project to renovate RMTD’s 30-year-old downtown transfer center kicked off in February 2018. The project is projected to be completed in late spring 2019.

“In addition, we are going to be talking to stakeholders — community and business leaders, etc. — who make decisions about transit. At the conclusion of the study, we will examine all the information we have amassed to see what we still need to do to enhance public transportation in our service area,” Stubbe said. “We will seek to answer such questions as, ‘Are there gaps in our service that need to be filled immediately?’” With the information gathered by the study, RMTD will begin to implement changes, while balancing improvement projects with available funding resources. “The study will be ongoing throughout the winter,” Brown said.

We are working very closely with R1PC, because, if it weren’t for its participation, we would not have the resources to pull off a study this massive. It is exciting, and we are looking forward to seeing the results. It has been about 10 years since we have conducted a route study.”

At one time, everybody had to come downtown to transfer. That is not true anymore.” Several demographic groups call the city home, including refugees from foreign countries. It is part of RMTD’s mission to make newcomers feel welcome, and to help them navigate the public transportation system. “About 15 percent of our population is Hispanic. We also have a lot of other ethnic backgrounds in our community. We have a pretty diverse population in Rockford,” Brown said. “We conduct two training programs for people who have limited English skills. We work very closely with Catholic Charities on a monthly training program for its refugee program, which serves people who are new to our country and new to Rockford. We teach them about the bus system through interpreters.” The training culminates in RMTD planning an itinerary for the newcomers to take a bus ride home. Brown is also available to give presentations to high school students and other groups. “We will structure a presentation to meet the needs of any group that is seeking information about the transit system,” Brown said. “If groups, such as the Rotary or Kiwanis clubs, want me to make a general presentation about RMTD, we can make that happen. If somebody wants to take a field trip, we can set that up, too. We do as much outreach as we can, whenever Page 30

and wherever we are invited. “We are not likely to gain additional ridership from presentations to such groups as the Rotary and Kiwanis. However, the goal is to make people have more goodwill toward public transportation in the community.” In teaching people in the refugee program about public transportation, the goal is to make them comfortable riding the bus, in hopes that they will become regular customers, whether they are transit dependent or choice riders. “We will conduct training for the refugee program on Monday, and, on Tuesday, we will see some of those people at a bus stop on their way to ESL (English as a second language) classes. That is always a good feeling,” Brown said.

While public transportation in Rockford enjoys much support, some of the traditional negative perceptions still linger, i.e., buses are dirty and are not safe to ride. “Negative perceptions still exist to a certain extent. runs the same hours as the fixed-route service in Rockford. During the past couple of years, Loves Park and Machesney Park have extended their paratransit service at night. As paratransit is more expensive to operate than fixed-route service, RMTD encourages people to ride the fixed-route service, if possible. According to RMTD, paratransit is also more expensive for the user, as the fare is double that of the fixed-route service. If they can, many people opt to ride the bus because it gives them more flexibility, plus they don’t have to worry about scheduling a ride. For those who are not able, paratransit is a great way to get them where they want to go.

A

NEW TECHNOLOGIES PLANNED FOR NEW FACILITY

t this time, RMTD uses an industry standard software for scheduling, preparing drivers’ manifests, enabling dispatchers to track the location of buses, among other tasks. When the new renovated downtown facility is completed, RMTD will launch new passenger information display technology, RMTD said. Currently, paratransit dispatchers have the technology to track vehicles in real time. “RMTD is working on implementing real-time tracking for fixed-route dispatchers, as well, Stubbe said. “In addition, our website has a trip planner that is powered by Google. If a person wants to know how to get to a particular location, he/she can go to our website or to Google maps.

RMTD is also looking to replace its clean diesel fueled fleet with hybrid-electric or, in the future, all-electric buses. “The expectation is we will be getting some alternative fueled vehicles, Brown said. “We are also conducting some very aggressive research into all-electric vehicles. On the subject of the use of autonomous vehicles, RMTD officials feel Rockford’s infrastructure is not set up like some of the larger cities for autonomous vehicles. Much work would have to be done in harmony with a lot of people in the community, and Rockford is just not there, yet. Looking ahead, RMTD officials are confident public transportation will remain an important part of the community’s efforts in making Rockford a desirable destination for people to live and work in the future. “City leaders, community organizations and enabling associations are trying to make Rockford a place where people want to live and have a lot of good times and adventures, Brown said. “As the city becomes more marketable, public transportation will be an even more important part of that story. “I think if people will get on the bus and try it, they will be pleasantly surprised. Contact: Rockford Mass Transit District, 520 Mulberry St., Rockford, IL 61101. From SLEC

ADVERTORIAL

The Ultimate Pack: A Cabled Lift Where The Cables Are Off The Floor

For many years, the traditional method of connecting mobile columns has been via cables. While this remains the preferred means of connectivity due to its simplicity and robust reliability, the concept of wireless communication has caught the imagination. A wireless battery powered lift has many disadvantages such as the need to recharge batteries, the cost of replacement batteries and the probability of radio interference. The engineering team at SLEC was challenged to develop a cabled lift where the cables are off the floor – now known as the “Ultimate Pack.” Each cable is inverted so that instead of hanging from the control panel down, it is suspended from the top of each column — getting the cable well out of harm’s way. The “Self Retracting Cable System” stores the interconnecting cables on the side of the column. To set up the system, the operator pulls out the cable to the desired length, and loops the “Cable Stop”

on to the hook on the lift it is being connected to. Once connected, the cable is plugged into the lift. Ray DeCarlo, national sales manager for SLEC, Inc., said, “We are going into this with a belief that in the first year, sales of the ‘Ultimate Pack’ will represent at least 50 percent of our sales volume.” Our 18,000-pound lift is the go-to lift for all heavy duty applications. Manufactured in Baltimore, MD, it comes cram-packed with innovative and user-friendly features that make the SLEC® experience better: • Operated as four/six lifts to raise the vehicle in the air, you also have the ability to use two jacks to tilt the vehicle for quick under vehicle access. • The interactive touch screen control is the home base for selection of all columns, pairs of lifts (for replacement of axle, springs or air bags) and individual lifts (for brake adjustments and relines).

• In the unlikely event of a fault, the column number and type of fault is communicated in a format that the operator can understand, getting the lifts back working with minimum fuss and downtime. • Every SLEC® lift we have ever made uses a self locking ACME threaded screw, and a self-locking load bearing nut. As it is guaranteed self locking, the lift does not depend on a back up locking device to grab the load if it fails. We are very committed to honoring an obligation to support our products as they age, and require a bit of TLC. The day your SLEC® lifts are set to work is the start of our relationship. We intend to ensure that your SLEC® experience is hassle free and aim to be there for you whenever you need. We offer: fixed cost maintenance inspections; free telephone technical support; and, conveniently located field-based service technicians for fast response times and minimal downtime. SLEC® lifts are independently tested and certified to the standards of the Automotive Lift Institute ANSI/ALI ALCTV-2011. For information, visit www.slec.com.

NEWS FROM MCI

All-New MCI D45 CRT LE Commuter Coach Passes Altoona Test

Motor Coach Industries (MCI), a subsidiary of NFI Group, Inc., has announed that its all-new MCI D45 CRT LE has passed the mandated U.S. Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Altoona test for new bus models. FTA’s bus testing program, named for the Altoona, PA, testing center, tests the reliability of all-new bus models for use in federally funded public transit systems procurement. A press release stated, “The MCI D45 CRT LE underwent a 10-month battery of tests accelerating a 12-year, 500,000 mile service life. According to Paul Fazio, MCI engineer and director of new product development, the model sent to Altoona was set for the heaviest level of customer usage, just shy of the model’s full GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of 54,000-pounds, to equal a real-life, rush hour load of fullyseated and standing passengers at peak travel time. “The D45 CRT LE is MCI’s first complete redesign of an MCI model in 20 years. We anticipated positive results because the

model’s platform is based on our J-series structural design, which has proven to be very robust in all types of operating environments, said Fazio. “The D45 CRT LE passed its durability tests with flying colors.

This is a significant outcome, as the platform will also be the basis for our batteryelectric D-model planned for a production start in 2020. According to the release, “MCI was one of North America’s first motor coach manufacturers to test at Altoona, submitting a 102 DL 3 to the facility in 1995. MCI also placed the industry’s first hybrid-electric coach through Altoona testing in 2008.

“We are proud of the hard work of our engineers, said Ian Smart, MCI president. “Our goal is to have the D45 CRT LE perform reliably on commuter routes, in all types of weather and road conditions. “We’ll be back at Altoona in April with our first battery-electric MCI D45 CRTe LE, and with the non-vestibule version of the D45 CRT in September, said Fazio. MCI said, “The ADA- and Buy America-compliant MCI D45 CRT LE incorporated a new design process at MCI, which included direct participation from various advocacy groups including the National Council on Independent Living and the American Association for People with Disabilities. The CRT LE’s mid-vehicle vestibule features an automatic curb-level ramp that enables most mobility devices swift entry and exit. And its forward door also has an enhanced ergonomic spiral entryway to facilitate ease of boarding. The dual-entry system cuts dwell times to equal conventional low-floor transit boarding times. Visit www.mcicoach.com.

LIFTS THAT LAST A LIFETIME

Davenport, IA, Remanufactures 4 Buses With Midwest Bus

There are four transit buses with new life in the Davenport, IA, CitiBus Transit System because of a partnership with Midwest Bus Corporation.

“Davenport’s 35-foot, low-floor Gillig buses went through an overhaul that included rebuilding or replacing almost every mechanical aspect of each bus, with the exception of engines or transmissions. The rebuilding program also included a total interior and exterior renovation including new floor coverings, seat inserts, exterior panels as required and interior and exterior paint. New EMP electric cooling assemblies were also included,” according to a press release. “The buses rehabbed by Midwest Bus Corporation will be used on a shuttle funded

by the Departments of Transportation for both Iowa and Illinois during the construction of a new I-74 bridge that crosses the Mississippi,” said John Powell, transit operations director for the city of Davenport. “Midwest was able to meet our expectations, and the new service started December 3.” The CitiBus Transit System’s bus routes cover approximately 30 square miles of the city, with numerous schools, shopping centers, hospitals/medical centers, local businesses and tourist attractions within easy walking distance of most CitiBus routes. The new shuttle operates two different routes, bringing the total number of routes operated by CitiBus to 12. “The purpose of the shuttle is to help relieve traffic over the existing I-74 bridge during the height of construction. Given the relatively short operating window (about 15 months), it was important to rehab our buses as economically as possible,” Powell said. “Midwest helped us achieve that goal.” For more information on Midwest Bus Corporation, visit www.midwestbus.com.

Additionally, the coach can be outfitted with a Wi-Fi system, state-of-the-art sound and video, and electrical outlets at each seat to keep passengers plugged in and in touch while commuting.

The Van Hool C-coach model has been a staple of North American fleets for over 15 years, and has consistently delivered reliability and versatility to fleets while providing the luxury customers have come to expect. The CX45 offers a new interior and exterior design that integrates a host of new safety features, with the bonus of increased mechanical serviceability. Currently under development is an all-electric version of the CX series coaches. Pre-orders will be offered in 2019. The CX series is available in 35- and 45-foot models, and brings Van Hool’s quality design and engineering, plus rugged reliability and the perfect flexibility, to a fleet. With parts interchangeability, fleet maintenance is a lot easier. The 35- and 45-foot models share a nearly identical design. Their high level of parts and components interchangeability drive some high-value benefits to operators. A dramatic reduction in spare parts investment is an obvious advantage, but for operators who already run the Van Hool CX45 in their fleets, the need for driver and mechanic training is greatly mitigated.
