Beaches & Coast Walks Dog bylaws on Carmarthenshire beaches. All beaches in Carmarthenshire are designated under the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 under which it is an offence - punishable by a fine of up to ÂŁ1,000 - not to clean up after your dog. Dog restrictions during the bathing season (1st May to 30th September annually) Prohibitions, alongside areas where dogs are allowed, apply to the following beaches between the 1st May and 30th September inclusive. No prohibitions apply to guide dogs for the blind.

Pendine Beach Seven miles of glorious sands overlooking the Gower Peninsula. The Dog restrictions at Pendine Beach apply to the section between the two slipways, which still gives dogs an ample playground. NB: Part of the seven miles of glorious sands is used by the MOD for firing, Monday - Friday 08:00-16:15, and conveyed by the use of red flags which are on display while firing is in progress. Contact Range Control to find out firing times on 01994 452310 or pendine.qinetiq.com

Ginst Point Nestled in between Pendine, and Laugharne is the unexplored end of Pendine Sands. Ginst is a great spot for dogs on leads. Like its neighbour Ginst Point is used by MOD for firing, Monday – Friday 08.00-16.15, and conveyed by the use of red flags which are on display while firing is in progress. Contact Range Control to find out firing times on 01994 452310 or pendine.qinetiq.com

All year round dog friendly beaches Laugharne A sleepy and timeless sea town on the Taf estuary, made famous by poet Dylan Thomas where he once lived and, inspired by his surroundings, wrote many of his great works, including ‘Under Milk Wood’. Overlooking the estuary are the dramatic ruins of a Norman Castle. The craggy Cliffside walk that leads to Dylan Thomas’ boathouse is great for dogs on a lead (no more than 3 dogs per person) For those looking for a longer circular route, this walk with its dog friendly stiles and gates continues along the riverside past the boathouse and inland, bringing you back to Laugharne.

Ferryside The pretty coastal village of Ferryside looks across to Llansteffan and its commanding Norman Castle. No restrictions on dogs on this picturesque riverside beach so you can exercise your dog to its heart’s content while you lap up the scenery.

St. Ishmael The same as its neighbouring beach at Ferryside, St. Ishmael is a year round dog friendly beach.

Paws for Thought We want you to make the most of being on holiday with your best friend. This means respecting the fact that not everyone is a dog lover and a certain etiquette applies. Here are some basic rules to bear in mind whilst out and about with your pet: • Always clean up after your dog. • Never leave your dog in a hot, or even warm, car. • Dogs should be kept on leads where stated. If off lead, your dog must be kept under close control. By law, you must control your dog so that it does not disturb or scare farm animals or wildlife. Farmers are entitled to destroy a dog that injures or worries their animals. As a general rule, keep your dog on a lead if you cannot rely on its obedience. • Leave all gates, whether opened or closed, as you found them. Walking and cattle Many footpaths cut across farmland which is being grazed by cattle.

Cattle are not prohibited from being kept in fields crossed by rights of way. Much of the time, a herd of cattle in a field will approach you out of curiosity. It would be prudent however, to exercise caution when entering a field of cattle, as serious cases of attacks by cattle have taken place, particularly upon walkers with dogs. The following advice is given: • When walking through a field of cattle, move calmly and quietly through the field. • Do not let yourself get between a cow and her calf. • If you have a dog with you, the most important thing is to let it go. The cattle are probably more interested in the dog than you and the dog can travel a lot faster and will get itself to safety. Your safety should be prime in your mind. Lost & Stray dogs - For lost and stray dogs, or to report an incidence of dog fouling, contact the Carmarthenshire County Council Contact Centre on 01267 234567

37 Brynamman y From walks along the beach to hikes across the hill-tops, there are hundreds of miles of paths and acres of open countryside in Carmarthenshire for you to enjoy with your dog. We all know how much your four legged friend enjoys a good walk. Whether you’re looking for an undemanding coastal or country walk or a more challenging hike on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Carmarthenshire has everything to offer the walker. Many of our walks have been made easier for dog owners by the installation of custom built stiles and gates, to take the hassle out of your day out in the countryside.
