Framework Kicks Off Management Training For BSP Company’s HQ Improvements

Open working space

Engineers at BSP are helping to realise the flexible working vision at HR and payroll software experts MHR. The company was the civil and structural engineer on the firm’s new build Wellington House building at Ruddington Fields Business Park, near Nottingham.

The new block was designed to maximise flexible working and develop a creative working environment – with BSP designing structural engineering concepts to replace internal columns with beams and help realise the vision.

Now BSP is also involved in the renovation and refurbishment, on the same site, of MHR’s Britannia House – removing a significant number of columns and replacing them with heavy beams to create a similar open feel.

“This is going beyond open plan,” said BSP director Clive Roddick. “This is really maximising open space, using structural design expertise to develop a flexible, state-ofthe-art working area.”

MHR is an independent company specialising in HR and payroll software and services. Established in 1984, the growing company now employs more than 700 employees and supports over 1,000 UK organisations from its three offices in Ruddington.

Trio of awards

Three projects involving BSP Consulting as engineers struck gold at two different award ceremonies in less than a week.

The Waterside Lodges at Center Parcs Elveden Forest won the Retail & Leisure Project of the Year Award at the Structural Timber Awards 2018. Nominated by METSÄ WOOD, the project was a new style of accommodation for Center Parcs and opened in May 2018.

BSP acted as civil and structural engineer for the steel platforms of the three Waterside Lodges.

Just a few days earlier, another project involving BSP Consulting was named as East Midlands Scheme of the Year at the fbe East Midlands Awards 2018. New Bolsover Model Village in Derbyshire - nominated by contractor Robert Woodhead Ltd – had earlier taken the top slot in the Regeneration Award category at the awards ceremony staged at the Albert Hall in Nottingham.

In addition, BSP was also part of the team which took the Residential Award at the ceremony. The company was engineer at Knights Close, Billesdon, Leicestershire – an affordable housing scheme built for Seven Locks Housing by Geda Construction and designed by Pelham Architects.

BSP Consulting development director Jef Todd said: “It’s always great to win awards, and we were thrilled when three schemes that BSP had been involved in were named as the winners at two different award ceremonies in less than seven days.”

Heritage Hotel completion

Clipstone Colliery scheme

A Grade II listed Georgian building opposite Leicester Cathedral has re-opened as luxury overnight accommodation following a £1.8m development.

Offering 28 double and twin rooms including a top floor Junior Suite, St Martins Lodge www.stmartinslodge. co.uk was formerly used as offices.

BSP Consulting was appointed by the Leicester Diocese as the structural and civil engineer for the scheme, which was completed by Stepnell, with the plans drawn up by Corporate Architecture Ltd. It included alterations and an extension.

BSP has undertaken surveys to some of the buildings at the former Clipstone Colliery site in Nottinghamshire.

Clipstone Colliery Regeneration Group hopes to revitalise the site, which closed as a pit in 2003 and which is home to iconic Grade II listed headstocks.

Having been awarded £142,800 by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a feasibility study, the group appointed architects Maber to look at the ideas proposed. BSP’s Leicester office has been involved in structural surveys on the site.

Engineers from BSP are currently involved in a renovation and refurbishment project at East Farndon Hall near Market Harborough.

The Grade II listed home is in private ownership, and BSP is working with Corporate Architecture on the scheme.

Designs are now being drawn up by BSP for a scheme in Western Road, Leicester, which will convert what was originally a Victorian textile building into apartments and other uses.

MAS Architecture and John Lester Partnership are also involved in the project, which includes the construction of side extensions to the first and second floors and will lead to the creation of eight one-bedroom apartments, along with leisure use on the ground floor.

Management training expands

The first group of BSP Consulting professionals undertaking management, leadership and other advanced training has graduated from the scheme – with another group of candidates lined up to complete the next programme.

Six members of staff - structures director Paul Elphick, associate director – civils Matt Viggars, associate director – civils Tony Goddard, associate - civils Carol Ell, principal transport planner Joanna Posnett and senior engineer Oliver Dike - have recently completed the Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Management, while business development

manager Carrie Booth has finished a marketing qualification.

The group held an away day to focus on how best to put their training into practice, for the benefit of the company, their colleagues and their own professional development.

Now a second group of BSP professionals has stepped forward to join the next NVQ in Management Training, which will once again be governed by ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) and delivered by Nottingham-based Training for Business.

These are associate director Tim Wilson, associate Monika Anszperger, senior civil engineer Craig Noonan, BIM manager Dan Hinchley, civil engineer Sam McGuigan and office manager Katie White BSP business development director Jef Todd said: “I’d like to congratulate those who have successfully completed their NVQs and wish the second group all the best as they embark on the training. Historic site contract BSP has been instructed to design the new visitors’ car park at Leeds Castle in Kent.

One of the most visited historic buildings in Britain, the site has been a Norman stronghold, the private property of six of England’s medieval queens, a palace used by Henry VIII and his first wife Catherine of Aragon, a Jacobean country house, a Georgian mansion and an elegant early 20th century retreat for the influential and famous.

Now, BSP has been appointed by the

estates department at the castle to design new surfacing and improve the drainage at the four-hectare car park – taking into account the sensitive nature of the site and its environment.

The aim is to have an all-weather surface for visitors to park on all year round.

“It can only be imagined how many visitors there have been over centuries at Leeds Castle. The BSP Consulting team is proud to be playing a role in helping to welcome the very many more visitors of the future,” said BSP civil engineer Stephen Hardman.

Local centre scheme

A new local centre featuring shop units on the Highfields housing development at Littleover near Derby has just been completed.

Phase one was built earlier this year and includes a Central

England Co-op store and a fish and chip shop, while phase two, which features four 1,000 sq ft ancillary retail units, has just achieved completion.

BSP Consulting has been structural and civil engineer on the LSP Developments scheme, with West Hart Partnership as the architect.

The Highfields Local Centre is supporting 1,000 new houses being constructed by Miller Homes, Taylor Wimpey and Barratt Homes. BSP Consulting also undertook the civil engineering and some of the structural engineering for the housing development.

Sporting framework kicks off BSP is part of the team that has secured a framework with UK sports charity, the Football Foundation, to help improve hundreds of community sports facilities in northern England.

The five-year framework will primarily cover the improvement of local football facilities in the north of the country on behalf of the Football Foundation – the largest sports charity in the UK, funded by the Premier League, The Football Association and the Government (via Sport England).

Other community sports such as cricket, rugby and hockey are also likely to benefit from the new programme.

The scope of works will vary dependent on individual project requirements but will include design, supply and installation of modular buildings to provide new changing room and clubhouse facilities. It is part of a wider Government strategy to 2021 to improve ‘grassroots’ sporting facilities to encourage more community involvement.

Paul Elphick, director at BSP Consulting, said: “BSP has wide experience of working on a range of football pitch and leisure centre sites, and we are proud to be involved in this framework to play a part in boosting the nation’s sporting and community facilities.”

Architecture firm LK2 partnered with Gleeds – the Framework Managing Consultant (FMC) - to win the framework, with M&E consultancy Couch Perry Wilkes also part of the team along with BSP Consulting.

Residential development Engineers at BSP Consulting are working with Kier Living on a major new housing scheme planned for Northamptonshire.

Earlier this year, Kier Living was chosen by Homes England as the residential partner to deliver the £200m community of 750 new homes

on a 48-acre site at Hardingstone.

The development will also boast a wide range of community facilities including a new primary school, leisure and recreational facilities, as well as office and retail space.

Independent living scheme A Nottingham City Homes project to provide 37 independent living units in Strelley has been completed.

BSP Consulting was the civil and structural engineer on the development, which also included a new library.

Built by GEDA Construction, the complex features 37 apartments, two residents’ lounges and a residents’ private garden.

The main building was designed as a steel-framed transfer structure up to first floor level, providing the open spaces required for the library at ground floor.

Out and about Away day

The Leicester office of BSP held an away day at Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre – getting stuck in to a string of adventurous activities, both on and off the water, including problem solving, crate stacking and a raft race. Here they are pictured during the raft building challenge.

Swimming challenge

BSP associate Carol Ell swam the equivalent of the English Channel and raised £365 for Diabetes UK. Completing the 22 miles over 12 weeks, Carol undertook the Swim 22 2018 challenge to improve her swimming capability and general fitness but also to raise awareness and money for Diabetes UK. Friends and family have been affected by diabetes.

The swim took place at Carol’s local pool over a series of sessions and covered 1,416 lengths.

A team from BSP Consulting - Paul Elphick, Jason Davenport, Sam McGuigan and Tom Bowey – joined 20 other teams on the golf course to help raise more than £3,600 for the stillbirth and infant loss bereavement charity, Forever Stars.

Sponsored by local firms Fraser Brown Solicitors and construction consultancy Gleeds, the Construction and Property (CaPs) Golf Day took place at Nottinghamshire Golf and Country Club and welcomed 84 players from the property and construction sector.

Teaming up with Danaher & Walsh for four jointly organised events, BSP invited guests to attend a series of enjoyable clay pigeon shooting evenings at Lakeside Sporting near Wymeswold, followed by food at the nearby Windmill Inn.

Running for charity

Summer soiree

Principal transport planner Joanna Posnett was part of a group of running friends who raised around £650 for the charity Tommy’s, which funds research into miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth, and provides pregnancy health information to parents. Jo, who is based in BSP’s Leicester office and is pictured on the left, has completed three 10k races during 2018, so far.

More than 75 property professionals from across Nottinghamshire gathered for another successful evening of networking and business development at the annual summer soiree hosted by BSP Consulting, jointly with DLP Planning and Roythornes Solicitors, and held at the Pitcher & Piano in Nottingham.

Gone fishing….

On track together

BSP, along with architects and construction consultants YMD Boon, staged a joint event at the velodrome at Derby Arena, back in May – giving invited guests the chance to take to the saddle for some cycling sessions. The event was followed by a bite to eat at The Yard nearby.

We had such fun that BSP’s Nottingham office returned in July – hosting a similar event for clients who work with the Nottingham team.
