Driving in Iceland in winter Three important websites you need to know: 1) www.road.is - ALWAYS check road conditions before travelling. Road.is is updated regulary on the condition of the roads. 2) www.en.vedur.is – ALWAYS check weather conditions before travelling. The weather can change quickly. 3) www.safetravel.is – Make a travel plan and get updates on alerts and warnings!

Highland roads are closed! Emergency number in Iceland is 112. Please listen to locals when they warn you about the weather and ask you to stay inside! Drive extra carefully! Driving in snow or ice can be difficult and dangerous. A thin layer of ice on the road is often almost invisible. Drive carefully, avoid quick turns and use the brakes with care.

Driving off-road is forbidden! That means also on our beautiful black sand beaches. Single-lane bridges. The actual rule is that the car closer to the bridge has the right-of-way. However, it is wise to stop and assess the situation. This sign indicates that a single-lane bridge is ahead.

Sólheimajökull – Please never go on a glacier without a certificate guide. The ice is always changing so it’s

for your own safety!

Reynisfjara black beach – Please be aware of the waves, there are sneaker waves that are large and come without a warning! – BE CAREFUL! Dyrhólaey – Please be aware of falling rocks, never go to the edge because it can collapse. Follow the paths and never go over lines, there is a good reason why it was put there!

Aurora Borealis – The Northern lights First and foremost, we want you to have a safe experience while hunting for northern lights! So it’s crucial to find a safe spot. DO NOT park or stop the car in the middle of the road. All over Iceland there are pull outs and rest areas, please use them to stop your vehicle. When it is dark enough the northern lights can be seen, depending on the activity of the Aurora, from mid-August to mid-April. The most important thing is to have as much clear sky as possible. There is never any guarantee for seeing them, that depends on solar flares. Aurora predictions can be rather inaccurate, just like the Icelandic weather. Icelandic Met office‘s cloud prediction can be very useful. http://en.vedur.is/weather/forecasts/aurora/ Web-sites which show northern lights in real-time can be very helpful. http://www.aurora-service.eu/aurora-forecast http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/pmap/ There are no rules for when and for how long Aurora can be seen during the night. Be constantly prepared and on the look-out as the lights can disappear as suddenly as they appear. Good luck and have fun!
