Bowel Care Award 2019 Have you or your team been innovative and made a difference to the care of people with bowel problems? We would like to encourage you to apply. The aim of the awards is simply to recognise excellence in bowel care.

WHO CAN ENTER? The Bladder and Bowel UK Bowel Care Award 2019, aims to recognise an individual or team, working within the NHS , Care Home Sector who is able to demonstrate that have made a difference to the care of their patients’ or clients within bowel care.

The award aims to highlight good practice and disseminate to other health care professionals to enhance patient care. The work needs to have been completed within the past year, or it may be a current project that you are involved with. The work can be within Adult, Children and Young People services.

HOW TO APPLY Complete the application form and submit a 500 word summary, detailing the work you have undertaken. This should include: Project title and description What you have done and the motivations as to why you undertook the work.

Any preparation undertaken prior to staring the project The impacts that have been made to patient care How your work or project has been evaluated.

Future plans for practice, next steps with your project

The diverse range of seminars and workshops delivered by experts in their field, will present the latest evidence based research and clinical data. Support in Secondary Schools for Young People with Continence Problems

It is easy to understand that managing incontinence is extremely difficult for anyone.

However, for young people at school problems can seem insurmountable, but are largely hidden and often poorly understood. The traditional perspective is that children grow out of bladder and bowel problems and therefore, young people are not affected.

Research undertaken at the University of Bristol has found that continence problems often persist into adolescence. Furthermore, they have identified that these issues often co-exist with depressive symptoms, bullying, poor self-image, relationship difficulties and poor experience of school. Despite guidance from the Department of Health on supporting pupils at school with medical conditions (2015, available from https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/ supporting-pupils-at-school-with-medicalconditions--3 ), the University of Bristol team has found that the needs of this group are not being met.

As a result of their findings Dr Joinson and Dr Whale have prepared a list of recommendations for schools which include discrete procedures for pupils to disclose

their problems, policies for use of toilet passes, procedures for catching up with missed lesson time and consideration of the needs of these pupils during exams, a designated person to deal with continence issues, encouragement of healthy drinking habits for all pupils and teaching about bladder and bowel problems for pupils as part of Personal, Social and Health education, as well as training for the teachers.

Dr Joinson and Dr Whale, with Juliette Randall( ERIC the Children’s Bowel and Bladder Charity), have also produced a policy document titled ‘Young people with continence problems need better support at secondary school’. Paediatric Continence Forum Seeking New Chair

Are you looking for a new challenge or an opportunity to work at a national level?

The Paediatric Continence Forum (PCF) is an independent national campaign group which was set up in 2003 to improve government awareness of the needs of children and young people with continence problems – and to improve NHS services in this often neglected area of child health. Its membership comprises key paediatricians and specialist nurses in this field, with formal representation from the charity ERIC (The Children’s Bowel and Bladder Charity), Bladder and Bowel UK (BBUK), the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and the School and Public Health Nurses Association (SAPHNA).

The PCF is seeking a new Chair to lead this dynamic and exciting group. The successful candidate will lead the Forum, ensuring it fulfils the tasks outlined in the Four Year Strategy and the annual Aims and Objectives.

This position offers candidates a prime opportunity to influence Government policy and improve the lives of young people. The PCF is an active group, responding to

Government consultations and the campaigning for better paediatric continence services.

Highlights of BBUK's Paediatric Education Day 2018

Our annual education day, one of the highlights of our calendar, was held at Redbank House Manchester on 16th October. It was fully booked several weeks in advance again this year, with over 60 professionals attending from across the country. We were also well supported by our company colleagues, who provided a diverse exhibition covering a wide range of continence related products. Break times were busy with delegates networking and discussing items being exhibited.

The day was as full as usual. The first talk of the day came from June Rogers, who delivered an in depth session on constipation, covering the complexity of the problem, diagnosis, slow transit, toilet refusal, pelvic physiotherapy and TENS. Dr Carol Joinson from Bristol University then gave a very engaging presentation from her research on the role of psychological factors in paediatric continence problems. She stimulated lively discussion and suggestions for further research. The consensus from delegates was that this a particularly interesting session.

The afternoon sessions started with consideration of how to work with schools to engage support for children with continence problems and included issues to consider as well as how to access and employ guidance from the Department for Education to ensure that children’s needs are met. Foundation Trust was the winner of the inaugural Enuresis Award and described how her service had significantly reduced waiting times, improved access to care and NICE compliance and reduced nurse workload and financial costs through provision of a single-patient use enuresis alarms. The day was rounded off by June who talked about the use of facts and figures to support service development.

The day once again received excellent evaluation. We would like to extend congratulations to the worthy winners of the Enuresis Award and our thanks to our speakers, company colleagues and all the delegates who made together made this such a successful event.

Next years Paediatric Education day will be on Thursday 17th October 2019 and we would strongly recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.

Continence Nurse Specialists Part Time Opportunities

Due to the increase in calls to the BBUK helpline over the last 12 months it is anticipated there will be opportunities to expand our team in 2019. We would be delighted to hear from Continence Nurse Specialists who have experience of working with adults or children, with bladder and/or bowel problems.

We would like our new team members to provide a flexible approach to meet the demands of the service. If you are a nurse and are able to commit to a day a month, a day a week or anything in-between we would be delighted to hear from you.

Loo of the Year Awards

Any type of 'away from home' washroom can be nominated or entered in the competition, in any of the sixty one separate Awards categories displayed opposite and listed on the Entry Form.

There are National Category Awards for each Category for each of the Nations and short lists for most other National Awards are selected from National Category Awards winners.

Is Disabled Living Due for a Name Change?

Bladder & Bowel UK, one of Disabled Living's services changed its name in 2016 and what a positive impact that has made - people know exactly who the service supports.

Now we are considering if we should change the name of the charity Disabled Living.

The name Disabled Living implies we only support people with a disability, which is not the case.

We also support older people, those with long-term health conditions, people with bladder and bowel problems and just about anybody who can benefit from having a practical solution to an unmanageable problem. We also signpost to other organisations.

Therefore, many people do not contact us who could benefit from our services because they do not consider themselves ‘disabled’ Some people think we run a care home or day centre for people with disabilities Some of our services were established after the name changed to Disabled Living back in 1992 and are not directly linked to people who have a disability, such as our Bladder and Bowel UK service and training courses Some people think the name should be more positive

Throughout Disabled Living’s 120 year history we have had five name changes to reflect how the services have developed or to disassociated with a name that was not politically correct. Therefore, another name change will only associate with progression!

ERIC Conference 2018

The conference, titled ‘Broadening Horizons: Challenging our Continence Comfort Zone’, held at Birmingham Metropole Hotel on the 9th October, was attended by over 200 delegates from across the UK. June and Davina attended for Bladder and Bowel UK and they delivered a workshop on ‘Patient Pathways – Achieving better outcomes, reducing costs’ which was reportedly one of the best attended of the workshops. The workshop was an opportunity to highlight our new Continence Level One and Level Two pathways and the supporting Level One resource pack and assessment tool, which are available on our website at www.bbuk.org.uk/professionals/professionals -resources/ The programme at the conference was full, varied and interesting. ERIC launched a new film which highlighted the experiences of young people and their parents of living with incontinence; Sandra Hanson presented her Nursing Times Award winning video on use

Stewart Cleeve presented on the work of the children’s anorectal service at the Royal London Hospital, where they have been studying some of the physiological aspects of constipation. Another presentation of particular interest to us at Bladder and Bowel UK was from Chris Morris, of Exeter University, who spoke about a survey of NHS practice and systematic review of effectiveness interventions to improve continence for children and young people with neurodisability, a project that June and Davina are supporting.

Break times at conference were equally busy with lots of professionals taking the opportunity to come and look at our resources, especially the pathways, and to talk to us about service development.
