From the Introduction: ‘’The ‘Ascent of Mount Carmel’ and the ’Dark Night of the Soul’ supplement each other. The former deals with the active purgation of the senses, the intellect and the will, that is, with the need for, and the manner of, a complete mortification of these powers, so far as with God’s grace, it can be carried out by man’s own exertions. The ‘Dark Night’ treats of the passive purgation of the same faculties, brought about by Divine intervention which steps in where human endeavours fail.’’ Translated by David Lewis with corrections and introductory essay by Benedict Zimmerman, O.C.D.
