The Awakening of Faith is a text of Mahayana Buddhism. Contents: Opening Hymn; 1. Reasons for writing this Book; 2. The Fundamental Doctrine of the Mahayana Faith; 3. Expositions of the Mahayana Faith;4. The Practice of the Mahayana Faith; 5. The Advantages of the Practice of the Mahayana Faith; The Closing Hymn; Translator’s Supplementary Matter: The Great Physician’s Twelve Desires (Vows); The Creed of Half Asia: To Sin King. Attributed to the Indian master Asvaghosa, it is more likely that the attribution was an honorific appellation due to the profundity of the treatise. Although often omitted from lists of canonical Buddhist texts, the Awakening of Faith strongly influenced subsequent Mahayana doctrine. Translated by Timothy Richard.
