The Rebirth of Narcissus

Page 1

Long long ago, human beings were divided into three different genders: male(the offspring of the Sun), female(the offspring of the Earth).

And hermaphrodite (the offspring of the Moon).

Since the beginning of creation, human beings were moulded into a spherical shape with two heads, four arms, and four legs.

Yet, such “unity” of human beings attracted the resentment and fear of the gods, whom eventually divided them in two. Such image of men passed down to now.

This was also a parable about love. Since people were born incomplete, they are destined to embark on a journey to find their 'other half' to become 'whole' after they were given birth.

Zeus could see the souls of each and every human beings, and some of them were broken.

The integrity of the human souls could only be seen when two person approaches one another and combine their souls.

Narcissus was the most handsome man in all of Greece and no woman could say no to his face.

But he was indifferent to all the women who came to court him.

Once Narcissus saw his handsome face in the water at the edge of a pond. Narcissus fell in love with his own reflection. His admiration of his beauty restrained him from leaving the pond, so he grew more and more haggard.

Zeus and gods could see that the soul of Narcissus was incomplete.

Eventually, Narcissus lost control of his mind and jumped into the pond to chase for his reflection.

One of his admirer, named Corona, pleaded Zeus to bring him back to life when she learned about Narcissus' death.

Zeus promised, but Narcissus must pay for his action.

Narcissus woke up and found that he had become so ugly.

This was the price that he had to pay for having a second chance.

Everyone called Narcissus the incarnation of the devil because of his hidecous face.

Narcissus was devastated and tried to draw his sword to kill himself. But he was stopped by Corona, who was secretly watching him from the sidelines.

In ancient Greece, throwing apples was one of the ways to show love. If the other person catches the apple, it means receiving love.

Narcissus finally accepted Corona's love after her zealous courtship.

Narcissus and Corona live happily ever after. At the same time, he gradually accepted his unattractive physical appearance and inner self.

Zeus was pleased to see the soul of Narcissus gradually intermingling with the soul of Corona and developing toward unification.

Modern social media is like a pond in this story, full of people's narcissistic reflections. As we construct idealized images of ourselves on social media, let's not lose sight of our original soul. It is the interchange of souls that could bring the genuine weakening of self-awareness and completeness.
