Beutler enters Handmaids of the Heart of Jesus Moorhead woman grateful for God’s providence during discernment By Katrina Genereux Staff Writer, OND
On August 30, Ashley Beutler took a big step in her journey toward consecrated life. She, and three others, entered as postulants with the Handmaids of the Heart of Jesus in the Diocese of New Ulm, Minnesota. “I am pretty convinced that the reason there are so many women entering in my class is because of the graces of this Year of Consecrated Life,” Beutler said during an interview a few months before entering the religious order. “I’m very grateful that I just happen to be entering in this Year of Consecrated Life.” Beutler is the youngest child of Deacon Bill and Sandy Beutler of St. Joseph’s, Moorhead. Ashley and her two siblings grew up in the parish. Faith had a central role in their family. For excample, Beutler played soccer and hockey and remembers be-
ing late to the locker room for some weekend games because attending Mass was their priority. “I probably didn’t at that point fully understand the significance of the Eucharist in my life,” Beutler said. “But … I see how I was fed and how my parents made that a priority.” She also attributes her closeness to the Catholic Church to her grandmother who lived with the family from the time Ashley was three years old. “Looking back, I realize the role my grandma played in my life,” Beutler said. Former Vikings player helps kick off first day of school DAY-ONE program seeks to inspire Sacred Heart School students through Catholic speakers By Katrina Genereux Staff Writer, OND E. GRAND FORKS, MINN. — On Sept. 8, Sacred Heart School began the year by inaugurating the DAY-ONE program. The school intends to continue bringing in a Catholic speaker on the first day of school to inspire and encourage the students to set goals and make the most of their opportunity for Catholic education. He shared his experiences with the students and their parents and grandparents in the Msgr. A.I. Merth Gymnasium. Birk talked about his youth, growing up in a Catholic family, attending Mass every weekend and going to Catholic school.
