Mission to love highlighted at Marriage Day
Mass and celebration draw from recent World Meeting of Families By Katrina Genereux Staff Writer, OND CROOKSTON, MINN. — “Today we celebrate marriage as God’s gift to man and woman and each and every one of your marriages and families, … whose mission, given by God, is love,” said Bishop Michael J. Hoeppner at the beginning of his homily during Mass at Marriage Celebration Day. “The mission of love, of marriage and family, that’s going to change the world,” he continued. “There’s no group of people in a better position to change the world than Christian husbands and wives and Christian families … fulfilling their mission to love.” The 20th annual celebration of marriage was held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Con-
ception on Oct. 4. According to the Office of the New Evangelization, more than 1,800 years of marriage were represented by the attendees. The theme of the celebration, Love is our Mission, was pulled from the recent World Meeting of Families held in Philadelphia and attended by Pope Francis. The theme and connection to the world meeting was present in many ways. The gift given to the married couples, widows and widowers in attendance was an image of the holy family created for the World Meeting of Families. Bishop Hoeppner blessed the gifts and greeted each person as they came forward. “Sound the Bell of Holy Freedom,” the official song for the World MeetCELEBRATION: Continued on Page 11

to, pornography is disintegrating the quality of married life. He said he encountered this frequently while serving as a pastor. “It is an insidious addiction which the popular culture is rapidly mainstreaming as expected and ‘normal,’ for men,” Father Schreiner said. “A true feminine identity and strength is also being profoundly warped by pornography, which sexualizes our women and girls at younger and younger ages. It is simply devastating.” “I am convinced that in our culture that is so overcome and overwhelmed by pornography, that if we don’t address the neg-
ative effects of pornography … and if we don’t shine our Lord’s mercy onto it, nothing else will be effective or fruitful in our evangelization and catechetical efforts,” said Amanda Zurface, J.C.L.. Zurface is the Coordinator of Justice, Marriage and Family Life for the Office of the New Evangelization in the Diocese of Crookston. Three years ago, Zurface attended a marriage and family conference in St. Louis. She heard discussions about pornography and its effects on marriage and family from a Catholic perspective.
