THE LAZY, HAZY, CRAZY DAYS OF SUMMER The days of summer afford us a change of pace. Temperatures are higher, days are longer, and we find ourselves looking for a place in the shade to put our feet up and enjoy a cool glass of lemonade.

Here in the northland, we look to find less time at work and more time at our favorite lake. Growing up in southern Minnesota, for my family, summer meant our annual vacation trek to the Wisconsin Dells area and Baraboo State Park. It’s a park cut out of a glacier, with a deep clear spring-fed lake (Devil’s Lake) surrounded on three sides by steep mountains made from huge granite boulders stacked on top of one another, residue of a long-gone ice age.

Dad and mom would stuff the station-wagon from tires-totop, bumper-to-bumper, with all that we’d need for two weeks of tenting and camping. The six of us would pile in and off we’d go to join up at the park with our uncles and aunts and cousins who’d drive up from Milwaukee for the weeks. And boy would we have fun, fun, and

more fun from sun up til sundown and beyond, til the campfire’s last flickering flame died out each night. What a rich and wonderful time those summer vacations were for our family.

In speaking of God’s goodness to us, the Bible, in the book of Lamentations, says: “Each day your mercies are reborn.” (Lam 3:23) It’s a way of saying that each day, our encounter with God is fresh, different and new.

Our God loves to surprise us.

In the book of Genesis, when God created the world and brought before Adam all the creatures to name, each and every creature was a surprise for him. The greatest surprise God gave to Adam was, of course, Eve. And Pope Francis says: Surprise “opens for us the road to love and towards receiving from the other person.”

I hope your summer is a time of discovery and surprise.

Towards the end of his life, Pope Paul VI was asked: “If there was one thing you’d do differently, what would it be?”

He thought and then answered: “I’d have taken more time to smell the roses.”

Cross-country relic tour stops in Bemidji

BEMIDJI, MINN. – Relics from two English saints known for their witness to freedom stopped at St. Philip’s, Bemidji on June 27.

The Strength of the Saints Relic Tour, sponsored by the United States Council of Catholic Bishops and the Knights of Columbus, brought relics of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher across the United States during the Fortnight for Freedom. The Fortnight for Freedom is an initiative of the USCCB to raise awareness of the importance of religious liberty in our day, and encourage fasting and prayer for our nation.

Jan Graffius, the Curator at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire, England, is the custodian of the relics and travelled with them giving presentations.

“I was asked a couple of days ago whether it was a coincidence that I was here at this time with the relics of John Fisher and Thomas More, and I said ‘no, this is absolutely not a coincidence,’” she said addressing the crowd of more than 120 people gathered at St. Philip’s.

The relic tour began on June 18 in the Archdiocese of Miami, and spent a week traveling through the Archdiocese of Baltimore, the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. From June 2627 they visited every diocese in Minnesota before moving on to the Archdiocese of Denver, the Diocese of Phoenix, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the Archdiocese of Washington from June 28 - July 5.

Midway through her whirlwind cross-country trip, Graffius said she was touched and moved by the depth of devotion of people who came to venerate the relics. She has never done a tour like this before, and was surprised at the numbers of people who came to see these saints.

“These are precious objects I look after; they also have a witness of their own to share,” she said.

The relics were present at St. Philip’s from 2:30 to 3:30. During that time, Bishop Michael J. Hoeppner shared a few words, Kathryn Mollen of the Minnesota Catholic Conference spoke about religious freedom and Graffius shared a brief history of the lives of the two saints whose relics are in her keeping.

is divinely given, not be curbed in the days in which we live and we remember this year, during the Fortnight for Freedom, the many, many witnesses throughout the generations who have given their testimony as needed to religious liberty,” Bishop Hoeppner said while leading an opening prayer.

During her presentation Graffius described each relic.

“This is John Fisher’s ring, which he wore during his lifetime, and to which he was deeply devoted. It is not his bishop’s ring, but a private piece of commemorative jewelry,” she said.

The ring contains a cameo of the Greek philosopher Aristotle. According to Graffius, Fisher had a great devotion to the writings of Aristotle. Aristotle wrote about the origins of the universe, the soul and deduced that there was a first mover who created the universe.

“I think perhaps it meant to John Fisher that here was a man in search of God in his own way and every human being throughout human history has had within him that need to find out the truth about God,” she said.

After he was beheaded on July 6, 1535, his daughter begged for her father’s head. Graffius said that she was buried with it, but before she died, she broke off a piece of his jaw bone and a tooth for her brother and a cousin. In the 1640s, Thomas More’s grandson placed the

pieces in a silver reliquary, which was given to Stonyhurst College in 1826.

The presentation was followed by a reading from the Gospel of Matthew taken from the feast day of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher. People were then invited forward one at a time to venerate the relics.

“Though not perfect, More and Fisher were called to be witnesses to freedom in their time and in the context of the concrete circumstances in which God placed them. When the law of the king came into conflict with the law of Christ, they chose Christ,” wrote the Minnesota Catholic Conference in a question and answer document created for the relic tour.

Thomas More was an accomplished lawyer, and family man, who eventually became a Councilor to King Henry VIII and was named Lord High Chancellor.

John Fisher was a great theologian and engaging speaker, and was a theology teacher for the future King Henry VIII and his brother. He was later named Bishop of Rochester.

When Henry VIII divorced his wife, breaking away from Catholicism and declaring himself the head of the Church of

England, he demanded that all the bishops reject the pope and accept him as the new leader of England’s church.

“Of all the bishops in England and Wales, only one refused to sign, and that was John Fisher,” Graffius said. “For this he was stripped of his post and he was persecuted and eventually imprisoned.”

Graffius said King Henry VIII also required every adult male and person of influence in the country to reject papal authority and accept Henry as the leader of the church. Thomas More refused and was imprisoned as well.

The men spent nearly two years in prison. John Fisher was beheaded on June 22, 1535, a few weeks before Thomas More.

“It was a measure of both of them that they were able to meet their ends with such composure and dignity, both of them laughing and making jokes,” Graffius said.

As Curator, Graffius often shares the relics of these saints and other English martyrs with children at Stonyhurst. She emphasizes two points to them,

the first being that faith is a gift, but it comes with a price.

“The price may be persecution, it may be discrimination, it may be ridicule, it may be lack of promotion, it may be worse than that. You may be asked to pay the ultimate price to stand up for your faith,” she said.

The second point she makes regarding More and Fisher is that they were educated men who paid attention to what was going on around them.

“They studied what was happening in their own times so that they were able to answer and stand up for what they believe in and it’s incumbent on all of us, at whatever age we are, to educate ourselves about the issues of the day … to discern what is truth and then take it out there into the public square and make your stand,” Graffius said.

Debt, sustainability and solidarity through the lens of integral ecology As we commemorate the passing of one year since Pope Francis released his encyclical “Laudato Si” (“On the care for our common home”), it is worth reminding ourselves how the pope’s re-presentation of Catholic social doctrine through the lens of “integral ecology” can help us address some of the most challenging socio-political problems of our day, especially as we evaluate candidates in this election season.

Integral ecology is an ethic that respects both persons and the environment and does justice to both. In other words, it seeks to foster right relationships between people and communities, as well as between humans and the created order with which God has blessed us.

Being in right relationship with others includes being in right relationship with future generations – not saddling them with challenges that will burden their well-being, and embracing the responsibility to leave the world better than we found it.

Sadly, a culture of instant gratification and ideological rigidity has blinded us to our inter-generational responsibilities, and has led us to pile debt in various forms upon those

who will come after us. Both our national debt and the accumulating ecological debt are regularly (and rightly) described as “unsustainable,” and pose grave threats to future generations and to the planet itself.

MASS CONSUMPTION By one measurement, the U.S. government had $76.4 trillion in debts, liabilities, and unfunded obligations at the end of FY 2015. That amounts to $237,284 for every person living in the U.S, and $613,531 for

every household in the U.S. This is a major policy crisis for the American public. According to a 2014 report by the Congressional Budget Office, some potential consequences of unchecked government debt include: reduced “future national income and living standards”; “higher inflation” that decreases “the purchasing power” of citizens’ savings and income; and increased “probability of a fiscal crisis in which investors would lose confidence in the government’s ability to

manage its budget.”

Similarly, our ecological debt – the disparity between how much we use and waste and how much our local environment can produce and absorb – is staggering. Not only do our consumption patterns entail the creation of an excess of greenhouse gases that may contribute to climate change and a host of accompanying problems, but they also rely upon extracting natural resources from developing countries, harming their natural environment while leaving them with few returns.

As Pope Francis notes in Laudato Si’ (51-52): “A true ‘ecological debt’ exists, particularly between the global north and south, connected to commercial imbalances with effects on the environment, and the disproportionate use of natural resources by certain countries over long periods of time.” As a result, “the developed countries ought to help pay this debt by significantly limiting their consumption of non-renewable energy and by assisting poorer countries to support policies and programs of sustainable development.”

SEEING THE WHOLE Unfortunately, public offi-

cials tend to see the potential impact of only one form of debt, and sometimes minimize the impact of other forms. And there is often an unwillingness or inability to make a connection between the national debt and the ecological one, limiting their ability to address either.

Our attachment to ideologies, along with our own biases and limited horizons, often prevent us from seeing the right solutions.

By contrast, Catholic social doctrine, deepened in the discussion of integral ecology in Laudato Si’, helps us see the connectedness of things, and beyond the dis-integrated politics of half-truths and either/or solutions. Seeing the whole may lead us to restrain both government spending and consumption patterns (even though they may benefit us materially today) to preserve our common home for future generations.

The earth, its people, and its goods, are a gift given to us by the Creator. They are not ours to spend as we see fit, but instead are given to us to steward – to till and to keep. We’ve done too much tilling, and not enough keeping.

Right here, right now, in this time, in the garden where the Son never sets I met Genevieve (Genny) five years ago when I first moved to Bemidji. Her husband of nearly 60 years, Jim, had passed away less than a month earlier. Genny had a stroke 8 years before Jim’s death which left her struggling to speak and walk.

Earlier this summer, Genny joined her husband, Jim, and was able to speak and walk again. Our faith tells us those who believe in Christ will share eternal life with him. Genny believed!

In preparation for the funeral, her family shared their memories and one daughter put them down in writing and emailed them to me. The email was a great testimony to a great lady.

Genny had a built-in wisdom which our world will certainly miss. Here is proof: “Mom was the nurturer in our family. She was present, she was patient, she was gentle, and she forgave offenses against her almost immediately so that she could get back to being loving.”

ways. Dad was such a social person and he was always bringing people home for supper with little to no advanced warning.

Her generation of friends often stopped in without calling first.

No matter to her as she sometimes said ‘If you are coming to see me, stop by anytime! If you are coming to see my house, please call a week in advance.’”

“A year or two before her stroke, she told me, ‘If I become disabled like my sister, you will need to put me in a nursing home and don’t feel bad about it.’”

“After her stroke at age 71, she handled her disability with

grace. She was left unable to be the nurturer of our family.

Instead, this gave us a fabulous opportunity to nurture her. Dad was a champ, and we pitched in to help whenever and wherever we could. The roles had completely flipped.”

“When one of the grandchildren did a personal interview of her and dad for a school assignment, they inquired what was the best time of her life.

She responded with her broken words, pointing to the wheelchair that she sat in, ‘Right here, right now, in this time!’”

Even though the cross of paralysis was strapped to her

shoulders, she would not trade it for anything. She wanted to live “Right here, right now, in this time.”

When Gen first had her stroke she was able to live at home with Jim taking care of her. She was in a motorized wheelchair which gave her some freedom and independence. Well, one day she strolled out to the garden and promptly got stuck. (I found out later this happened more than once!) There she sat….and sat. She began to wonder when Jim would realize she was gone…and so she sat…and even got a little sunburn!

Now picture that scene and call to mind all that happens in a garden. It was in a garden where God would walk with Adam and Eve in the cool of the evening as Genesis tells us.

In a garden there is new life all around. In a garden, you know there are weeds but even they serve a purpose, enhancing the magnificence of plants and flowers.

When you think about it, if we are going to get “stuck” in

LIFE, there is no better place than a garden.

To be stuck in a garden, flooded by the sun, the Son. It seems to me we all need to be stuck in the garden of life a bit more often where God’s beauty is not distorted by the weeds of our sinfulness. In a garden, God gently invites us to live life, not merely survive it!

In a garden, we are stuck with God and God is stuck with us.

The last time I was able to give Genny Communion before her death, she was able to receive just a sliver of the host.

Genny knew a sliver of God was more than enough. That sliver held her Savior, her Redeemer, her Guide, her Peace, her Joy, her Comfort, her Lord.

It was enough. With Christ, it always is.

And so now we are the next generation and we are challenged to live as God helped Genny to live, especially after Gen’s stroke, to live: “Right here, right now, in this time!,” in the garden where the Son never sets.

Any time I come for a visit, even on short notice, she’s got some sort of homemade treat ready in a matter of minutes.

Whether it’s a piece of blackberry pie or chicken noodle soup, scratch-made spaghetti sauce or my favorite klobase sandwich, she’s able to produce something out of her freezer or pantry that makes me happy to sit at her kitchen table for a nice long visit.

I’m not the only one. Mom has a large “extended family” that includes parish priests, her kids’ former college roommates, retired army buddies and their wives, or old friends just passing through.

And if she’s visiting their home, she never arrives empty-handed. And she makes it look so easy!

I think that Mom simply plans for generosity. As with Abraham and Sarah’s fine flour or tender, choice steer, Mom has already stocked up her supplies, and, even more important, she has the attitude that nothing is too good for guests. Nor are her visitors considered an imposition, for in welcoming them and seeing to their comfort, she welcomes the Lord.

In today’s Gospel, Martha and Mary illustrate both sides of that hospitality coin. Martha honors the tradition of her ancestors Abraham and Sarah by fussing over the preparations, the food, a comfortable environment. Mary attends to the guest in a different way, extending personal welcome and attention. Jesus isn’t unappreciative of Martha’s efforts, but her anxiety and worry are evidence that her focus is off-kilter.

In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, we are asked to reflect anew on the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. At the root of each of them – whether visiting the sick, feeding the hungry, comforting the sorrowful or instructing the ignorant -- is an attitude of hospitality, of welcoming our Lord – the guest, as he comes to us in need of mercy and compassion.

This doesn’t just happen. Each of us must prepare and predispose ourselves to be mercifully hospitable, not only in giving material aid, but especially by engaging those to whom mercy is offered, as one would encounter Christ himself.

We don’t have to make mercy look easy, and we don’t have to worry about performing acts of mercy perfectly. But mercy is not an option.

Questions: Which of the spiritual or corporal works of mercy have you practiced lately?

How have you encountered the living Christ more deeply in that action?

I’m currently reading Doris Kearns Goodwin’s “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.”

Reading this week’s Scriptures on God’s generous dealings with his people, I can’t help but think of Lincoln and his tremendous desire to be at peace with all men.

The book is framed around the way he built his cabinet, primarily from men who had run against him for the Republican nomination for the presidency in 1860: William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase and Edward Bates, from New York, Ohio and Missouri, respectively. None had respect for Lincoln when they began their cabinet positions, yet only one ended up being disloyal to him. Seward, the one who had lost the most to him, ended up as his secretary of state and perhaps his closest friend and confidant.

But Lincoln’s team-building, reconciling ways were not limited to these three. He had built relationships within his home state of Illinois, prior to his nomination, that involved reaching out and offering an olive branch to anyone who might have been estranged from him.

Throughout his political career, Lincoln continued to exercise this magnanimous wisdom sincerely and consistently.

It would seem there is no great public figure in human history who has so pervasively modeled his behavior on Jesus and his teachings.

Abraham’s bargaining for the salvation of Sodom and Gomorrah would have sounded reasonable to Lincoln.

Jesus’ assurance that God would grant the Holy Spirit to those who ask him –

for “what father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish” – probably governed Lincoln’s relations with the many supplicants who sought favors, positions or reconciliation from him.

This man who sought to preserve the Union fought equally hard to bring reconciliation with his separated brethren, the estranged Southerners, even as the bitter Civil War came to a close. Striving for reconciliation with all parties made him a target for an assassin’s bullets.

Much good literature includes a Christ figure, and we should be able to recognize this one in our own country’s story.

Questions: Can you recognize any statesmen or stateswomen with a similar desire for reconciliation on the current political scene?

Jail ministries extend mercy to the imprisoned

During this Year of Mercy, Catholics throughout the world have been asked to incorporate works of mercy into their lives.

One such work of mercy is to visit prisoners, something Pope Francis does frequently and visibly throughout the world.

“Life is a journey, along different roads, different paths, which leave their mark on us,” the pope said while visiting a prison in Philadelphia on Sept.

27, 2015. “We know in faith that Jesus seeks us out. He wants to heal our wounds, to soothe our feet, which hurt from traveling alone, to wash each of us clean of the dust from our journey.”

From prayer and discussions to one-on-one pastoral counseling to the sacraments, people connected to the Diocese of Crookston are working to offer hope and extend the message of the Father’s mercy to our incarcerated brothers and sisters. These works began years before the Year of Mercy, and many of those involved hope to continue and expand their reach long after the close of the holy year.

Deacon Courtney Abel has been meeting with jail inmates for more than four years.

A family tragedy led him to begin visiting the Northwest Regional Correction Center (NWRCC) in Crookston on a regular basis. Since moving to Moorhead last September, he continues this ministry at the Clay County Jail.

Deacon Abel leads a scripture study with 8 – 10 inmates on Wednesday afternoons. At the end of the meeting, attendees can sign up for private pastoral counseling if they wish. Deacon Abel then makes arrangements to meet with them.

He finds a great deal of satisfaction through ministering at the jails and it has opened his eyes to the lives of the inmates.

“Besides that satisfaction, there is certainly an understanding of a whole other world that a person doesn’t really know about until you get involved in it, that of what goes on in the jails,” he said.

Deacon Abel said the Year of Mercy has not changed anything for him. “My compassion is the same as it was initially,” he said.

Deacon Dan Hannig of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston credits Deacon Abel with his involvement in ministry at the

NWRCC. “I shall be ever grateful to my friend for nudging me in this direction,” Deacon Hannig said.

Deacon Hannig spends three to four hours every Tuesday and Thursday at the facility. Inmates sign up to meet with the deacon one-on-one in an interview room, and he meets with four or five of them per day.

“The most important function I fill is to be a listener,” he said. “Most often, the man or woman will ask me to pray for their families, especially their children. I listen as they explain how they ‘messed up’.”

Deacon Hannig said the inmates are allowed to have two books with them, a Bible and one other religious book, and they frequently ask him questions about Sacred Scripture.

He doesn’t always meet with Catholics, so he tries to answer these questions from more than one perspective. He also hands out Spanish and English Bibles as well as rosaries to people who request them.

“God has used this ministry to enrich my faith and move me forward in holiness,” Deacon Hannig said. “I am humbled by the strong faith many inmates have. They use their time away from the rest of society to study Sacred Scriptures, pray and support each other.”

Before beginning his current one-on-one ministry, Deacon Hannig was part of the St. Maximilian Jail Ministry through the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

“Their ministry is often the first step that inmates take toward deciding to meet with me,” he said.

Volunteers with the St. Maximilian Jail Ministry pray the rosary with NWRCC residents on two Sunday evenings per month.

“We didn’t want to have anything that would require a lot of preparation or a lot of education, just something that was common to the Catholic experience,” said Lee Walski of Crookston, who helps coordinate the ministry.

“We go there to pray with and for the ones who are incarcerated, for their families and for those who work at the facility,” said Terry Dusek, a volunteer with the group who is a Cathedral parishioner.

The inmates sign up to come for the 30 to 45 minutes of prayer. Dusek said there are usually two groups of men and one group of women.

“We start our prayer by wel-

coming them and offering them holy water to bless themselves,” she said.

They find out how familiar the inmates are with the rosary and share a little bit about the mysteries and the parts of the rosary. Guides are available for people who need them, and often inmates will take turns leading the decades.

“We let them decide what mystery they want to pray and if they have any intentions they want to offer up,” Dusek said.

“Most of the intentions are for their families and for each other, for their court dates, the staff and even for the judges they will see.”

Dusek heard about the ministry at the Cathedral, and felt she needed to go pray with and for those who are incarcerated.

She said praying with the inmates and recognizing that they are children of God has made her more compassionate toward others.

Larry Ricard is a parishioner of St. Joseph’s, Fertile, but read about the rosary ministry when he flipped through a bulletin at the Cathedral two years ago and felt like it was something he could do.

Ricard said praying the rosary at NWRCC has helped him in his prayer life. He said it is rewarding to see the inmates step in and lead.

“We shake hands when we leave. They’re very friendly,” he said. “I suppose they’re glad that somebody else is thinking about them.”

“We feel it’s such a powerful prayer and we hope they pray it when they leave the facility and go back to their families,” Dusek said. “It’s also a prayer that they can take back to their cell and pray in private.”

ances or serving sentences of less than a year. This is one of the reasons the rosary was chosen.

“Because jail is very temporary … we thought it was most important to give them an opportunity to form a relationship with Our Blessed Mother,” Walski said.

At the Beltrami County Jail, Deacon Kermit Erickson is part of a group that helps introduce inmates to Jesus and build a relationship with our Savior.

He represents St. Philip’s parish as part of a joint effort of Bemidji area churches that take turns ministering at the jail on Thursday evenings.

Four times a year he leads a session with the inmates that includes prayer and discussion on various faith topics. Up to ten men are allowed to attend each session.

“We have had some very good discussions and some of the men are really sincere about making a change in their lives,” Deacon Erickson said. “They want to change so that they can make better decisions.”

He is often anxious before each visit because he doesn’t know who will come or what will come up in the discussion, but usually leaves knowing God has been working through him.

“I go in with a main theme that I want to talk about, but allow God to lead our discussion and usually one or more of the men just need to talk about where they are at with God,”

Deacon Erickson said.

Ron Vasek of Holy Trinity, Tabor, has witnessed inmates’ desire to know God during two retreats he assisted with at the Otter Tail County Detention Center in Fergus Falls.

The retreats are called Residents Encounter Christ. The two-day retreats are held in the jail and follow the same format as Together Encounter Christ (TEC) retreats.

REC is Catholic based and focuses on the Paschal mystery, but people of various faiths choose to attend.

At the retreats, Vasek served as a table leader, guiding his groups and facilitating discussions. He also gave a couple of presentations.

“I was impacted by the prisoners and their willingness to open up and ask God to come into their lives to help them with their situations. I felt like I was being ministered to while I was there,” Vasek said. “It’s sheer humility in learning what it’s like on the other side of the street.”

It was eye opening for Vasek to hear from the inmates about their lives, especially the circumstances they faced and the lack of guidance many had as young children in difficult family situations.

Benedictine Sister Constance Suedbeck dies Benedictine Sister Constance Suedbeck died June 16, 2016 Ione Anne Suedbeck made her first appearance in rural Adrian, Minn. on Jan. 28, 1925, as the fifth of seven children born to Frank and Mary (Schutz) Suedbeck. She attended rural schools in the Adrian vicinity and a public school in Slayton, Minn. After high school, she worked on the family farm, as a bookkeeper at a produce, billing typist at a wholesale plant and as the bookkeeper at the Murray County Oil Co-op.

After becoming acquainted with the Crookston Benedictines who taught at a catechetical school in Slayton, Ione entered Mount Saint Benedict in 1951 where she became known as Sister Constance.

Sister Constance attended summer school sessions pertaining to primary education at Mount Saint Benedict, Marillac College in St. Louis, the College of Saint Scholastica in Duluth, and she graduated from

the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. Praying the Liturgy of the Hours, attending daily Eucharist and singing in the Mount choir were very important to Sister Constance. Her first love was working with little children, and doing manual labor was a close second.

Energetic, with her tall, gaunt frame, she spent her strength and all the time she could spare in the gardens and with fresh vegetables. During the growing seasons, this ministry claimed most of her time and attention.

In addition to education and gardening, her ministries were wide and varied: as dietary supervisor at Saint Francis Hospital in Crookston; laundry supervisor at Saint Mary’s Hospital, Detroit Lakes; convent housekeeper and cook at Saint Elizabeth School in Lefor, N.D.; a nurse’s aide at Villa Saint Vincent; a home health aide in Fargo; bookkeeper at Care and Share in Crookston and as a volunteer at the Crookston

Public Library.

Sister Constance will be remembered by many who were blessed to have her as a creative teacher at Saint Joseph School, Moorhead; Cathedral Elementary School, Crookston and Assumption School, Barnesville.

Sister Constance also taught religious education classes at Carrizo Springs, Texas, and

helped in the summer program in Moorhead for children of migrant farm workers.

After joining the Crookston Foster Grandparent Program in 1989, she served at Highland Middle School, Rainbow Village Day Care and Lincoln School. Sister Constance expressed her love of these years when she wrote, “I love working with little children. They are so open and appreciative.”

Sister Constance quoted her Foster Grandparent Director as saying: “Each of us is like a tea bag. We don’t realize our strength until we get into hot water.”

Sister Constance was seldom out of hot water. She believed every person’s primary duty was to stay healthy by eating a healthy diet – including garlic, onions, vinegar and spinach.

She preached this belief to anyone who would listen. This is what got her into hot water much of the time.

When her health began to fail, she became a resident in

assisted living at Mount Saint Benedict Monastery in 2003, but continued to enjoy working in the garden as her strength permitted. In 2016, she moved to Villa Saint Vincent.

Sister Constance was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Esther Johnson, Raphie Vande Velde, Florence Disch, Lollie Engebretson and Elvira Dommeyer and a brother, Archibald. She is survived by many nieces and nephews and the members of Mount Saint Benedict Monastery.

Reception of the body of Sister Constance was at 4:30 p.m., on June 21, with visitation from 5 p.m. until the wake service at 7 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., on June 22. All services were at Sacred Heart Chapel, Mount Saint Benedict Monastery, in Crookston.

Memorials in honor of Sister Constance may be given to Mount Saint Benedict Foundation, 620 Summit Avenue, Crookston, MN 56716.

Father Bernauer, retired priest of Diocese of Crookston, dies Father James Bernauer of Dent, Minnesota, died June 19, in United Hospital in St. Paul.

He was born to William Jr. and Cecelia (Menz) Bernauer at St. James Hospital in Perham on July 7, 1926. He was baptized at St. Henry’s and confirmed in May of 1940. He attended St. Henry’s Parochial School for eight years and took his high school, college and theology studies at the Pontifi-

cal College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio. He was ordained to the priesthood by Amleto Cicognani, Apostolic Delegate, on June 7, 1952.

Father Bernauer’s assignments as associate pastor were: Three years at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Crookston; three years at St. Bernard’s, Thief River Falls; St. Ann’s, Goodridge; St. Clement’s, Grygla and St. Joseph’s,

Middle River and two years at St. Philip’s, Bemidji. In 1960 he became pastor at St. Mary’s, Badger and St. Joseph’s, Benwood. From 1963 to 1971 he served at St. Joseph’s, Olso and St. Mary’s Mission, Red Lake. From 1971 to 1981, Father Bernauer was pastor at St. Bernard’s, Thief River Falls; St. Ann’s, Goodridge and St. Clement’s, Grygla. For six years he served as pastor at St. Peter and St. Paul’s, Warren, and four years at St. John’s, Akeley; Immaculate Conception, Nevis and St. Theodore’s, LaPorte.

Father Bernauer also served as the northern tier Vocation Circuit speaker, the Diocesan Catholic Youth Director, and was on the Diocesan Liturgical

Commission, Pro-Life Commission, and a member of the Priests’ Council, St. Joseph’s and Retirement Boards. In retirement, Father Bernauer was

part of the “Highway 10 Cluster” of parishes, substituting on weekends.

Surviving Father Bernauer are his siblings, Virginia Plettl of Tucson, Bernard and Jerome (Donna) Bernauer of Richfield and Burnsville; eight nephews and nieces; 11 grand-nephews and nieces; many cousins; and his fellow priests of the Diocese of Crookston.

Memorials are preferred to St. Henry’s Area School.

Visitation for Father Bernauer was held June 23 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and prior to his funeral. Father Bernauer’s funeral was held at 11 a.m. on June 23 at St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Perham.

Dr. Mark Krejci begins as Director of Office of Marriage, Family and Life

On July 1, Dr. Mark Krejci started his positions as the Director of the Diocese of Crookston’s newly established Office of Marriage, Family and Life and Editor of Our Northland Diocese.

The former Office of the New Evangelization, which previously had one director to coordinate staff members for the diocesan efforts in the areas of Marriage and Family Life, Justice, Youth Ministry and Catechesis, has been split into three separate offices with initiatives to be coordinated by three independent directors. The offices are: Marriage, Family and Life; New Evangelization and Justice; and Catechesis and Youth Ministry.

Regarding the mission of the Office of Marriage, Family and Life, Krejci said, “The purpose of the office is to work with priests, lay ministers, couples and families to support and sustain marriage and family life as well as to enable and spread the call of God to respect all human life from conception to natural death.”

He intends to focus on, and encourage prayer throughout all aspects of his work.

“I want to use my ministry in this position to invite every married couple to pray for their marriage and family on a daily basis, for all children to pray for their parents and siblings, for all in the diocese to pray for marriage, family and

life on at least a weekly basis,” he said. “As Catholics, we have to keep in mind to pray for marriage and the family.”

Krejci is a licensed psychologist, with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of North Dakota, a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from the University of Notre Dame, where he also completed his doctorate in Counseling Psychology. He has been part of the psychology faculty at Concordia College in Moorhead since 1987, and will continue to work there part-time.

During graduate school, Krejci was trained as a therapist with special emphasis on marriage and family therapy.

He volunteered his skills in this area at St. Joseph’s, Moorhead, for many years, and now he looks forward to working with others throughout the Diocese of Crookston to support ministry to marriages and

families.

Krejci and his wife, Julie, have been members of St. Joseph’s, Moorhead, since 1987.

Krejci has given many presentations and led retreats throughout the diocese, sometimes accompanied by Julie.

These have focused on Marian consecration, adult and youth catechesis, Theology of the Body, and marriage and the Beatitudes.

Krejci is part of the diocesan Diaconate Formation program, and is entering the final year of formation. He and six other candidates are scheduled to be ordained on June 10, 2017.

During the Year of Marriage celebrated by the Diocese of Crookston, Krejci wrote a series of columns for OND focusing on marriage and the Beatitudes. Starting in August, Krejci will write a column focusing on marriage and family life that will print in each edition of the paper.

In the coming months, he intends to meet with every priest in the diocese and others working to support marriage, family and life to gather ideas and craft an approach to promote and support ministry in these areas. He welcomes ideas and suggestions from all via email at mkrejci@crookston. org.

Krejci will continue living in Moorhead and have office hours at the Chancery in Crookston on Wednesdays.

New Safe Environment training module available The 2016-2017 Safe Environment training module for the Diocese of Crookston is now available.

This year’s module is Component B, “Recognizing Abuse” and “10 Ways Teens are Hiding Their Online Behavior from Parents”.

Safe Environment certification is necessary for every adult, age 18 or over, clergy, visiting clergy, employee, independent contractor, and volunteer in the Diocese of Crookston who has the potential for unsupervised contact with children or vulnerable adults.

Certification includes a criminal background check, training related to recognizing and re-

porting child abuse, and agreement to abide by the Diocesan Safe Environment Policy and

Code of Conduct.

Five in parish cluster honored with Bishop’s Medals Bishop Michael J. Hoeppner presented Bishop’s Medals to five people in the parishes of St. Patrick’s, Kelliher; St. Ann’s, Blackduck; and St. John’s, Nebish.

On June 25 at the end of the 5 p.m. Mass at St. Patrick’s, Renee Frenzel received a Bishop’s Medal.

On June 26 at St. Ann’s, Kenny Hentges and Mary Hentges, and Mamie Pfeifer were presented with Bishop’s Medals at the 8 a.m. Mass.

At the 10:15 a.m. Mass at St. John’s, Tammy Ingersoll received a Bishop’s Medal.

Bishop Hoeppner thanked each of the recipients for their service in their local parishes and the stewardship they have shown in the use of their time, talent and treasure.

JAIL MINISTRY: Continued from Page 6 chance,” he said. “Through the REC experience, they came to know that Jesus was there for them … that he’s always standing there with open arms, waiting for them.”

Vasek is entering his final year of preparation for ordination to the Permanent Diaconate. Because of his experience with REC, he hopes to become more involved in ministering to the imprisoned after his ordination.

Often, people who attend a REC weekend while incarcerated come back to serve on retreats at the jails. Vasek said their witness was really powerful.

Throughout the retreat, the sacraments are discussed and the attendees are given the opportunity to go to Confession or speak with a priest.

“Just to watch the expression and their reactions after the opportunity to go visit a priest was unbelievable, especially for guys that were thinking they were pretty much down-andout and worthless,” Vasek said.

Father Duane Pribula, a re-

tired priest of the Diocese of Crookston, currently lives in Fargo and makes the sacraments available to inmates at the Cass County Jail when requested.

He administered anointing of the sick to a young man at the jail who was suffering with cancer.

“I heard his Confession and gave him Communion,” Father Pribula said. “If I didn’t offer that to him, he would have been spiritually stranded.”

“We tend to forget they are separated from their families, from their communities, and sometimes their families break up because of the situation they’re in, so they want someone who cares about them,” he said. “We as a Church can certainly tell them that we care about them and that Jesus and God, our divine Father, cares for them.”

Father Pribula has been visiting jails and ministering to the imprisoned since his ordination in 1970. He sees Pope Francis’ example of frequently stopping at jails on his travels as a

reminder of the importance of this ministry.

He encourages people and fellow priests to become involved. When he subs at parishes in the Fargo area, he often asks people to donate coats or jackets to the Cass County Jail.

“People come and go from there with only the clothes on their backs,” Father Pribula said. This becomes a problem if they are incarcerated in warmer months and released in the winter.

Aside from appropriate clothing for their release, inmates are often in need of basic help when they finish their sentence.

Deacon Abel is working on arranging aftercare for inmates released from Clay County. In his experience some people have homes to return to, some really want assistance in making changes in their lives and some don’t know where to turn when they are released.

“There is really a great need for housing, coaching, mentoring, letting them know about job opportunities and some place to go after they’ve served

their time,” he said.

Deacon Hannig said this is a large part of his ministry.

Whether it is a ride home or a place to stay while they are on probation, or assistance with a drug or alcohol problem, he connects them to services and helps where possible.

“Care and Share in Crookston has been instrumental in providing temporary housing, clothing, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and social services,” he said.

They also assist in finding employment and permanent housing.

Walski said the monthly Mass

offered at the Care and Share has been helpful for some former inmates to maintain a faith connection.

“It’s a really far stretch to take a person who has been in jail or who is homeless and say ‘oh, you should come to Mass with me at the Cathedral’,” she said.

She considers the St. Maximilian rosary group to be in its infancy stages, and hopes it will grow into something that can continue ministering to people in need even after their incarceration.

At closing Mass, people encouraged to pray, act for religious freedom

WASHINGTON – The theme for the 2016 Fortnight for Freedom, “Witnesses to Freedom,” unfolded as 1,500 people spent part of their July 4 holiday in Washington attending the observance’s closing Mass and venerating the relics of two English saints martyred in 1535 for their Catholic faith.

The Mass and veneration took place at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. After the Mass, people waited in a long line to kneel and pray before the relics of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More displayed near the altar.

Welcoming the congregation, Msgr. Walter Rossi, the shrine’s rector, said those filling what is the largest Catholic church in North America offered “testimony that the freedom to live our lives according to our faith is fundamental to the life of believers.”

The U.S. Catholic Church’s fifth annual Fortnight for Freedom closing Mass included the participation of three of the petitioners in a recent Supreme Court case challenging the federal contraceptive mandate. They contended that the requirement violated their religious freedom by forcing Catholic institutions to provide employee health insurance coverage for abortion-inducing drugs, contraceptives and sterilization procedures, which are prohibited by church teaching.

Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl of Washington, whose archdiocese and affiliated agencies challenged the mandate, was the main celebrant at the Mass. The homilist was Pittsburgh Bishop David A. Zubik, whose diocese also opposed the Health and Human Services contraceptive coverage provision of the Affordable Care Act. The consolidated case that was before the Supreme Court,

Zubik v. Burwell, is named for the bishop and for Sylvia Burwell, who is HHS secretary. A group of Little Sisters of the Poor – whose religious order also challenged the mandate – sat in a pew near the front of the congregation and received a long standing ovation at the end of the Mass.

On May 16, the Supreme Court in a unanimous ruling sent the case back to lower courts, vacated earlier judgments against those parties opposing the mandate and encouraged the plaintiffs and the federal government to resolve their differences.

Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States, was a concelebrant at the Mass. Along with Bishop Zubik, other concelebrants included Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty; Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio and Auxiliary Bishop Richard B. Higgins of the U.S. Archdiocese for the Military Services; Auxiliary Bishop Barry C. Knestout of Washington; and Msgr. J. Brian Bransfield, the USCCB’s general secretary.

In his homily, Bishop Zubik

commended the congregation for standing together and praying for religious freedom “on this 240th anniversary of our freedom in our United States,” dating back to the Declaration of Independence July 4, 1776.

He noted that just as footnotes in a term paper solidify the accuracy and strengthen the message of a point being made, “you and I are called to be footnotes, footnotes to the truth who is Jesus Christ himself.”

Catholics are called to be witnesses to Jesus and to be a living sign of his truth, the bishop said, adding that for some, that witness takes the form of martyrdom.

Bishop Zubik said “our ancestors in the faith” demonstrate what it means to be a footnote to Jesus’ truth, and then be witnesses and sometimes martyrs. He pointed to St. John the Baptist, who was beheaded when he refused to give in to political power.

Pittsburgh’s bishop praised the example of Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher, a layman and a bishop, respectively, as witnesses and martyrs who “would not yield supremacy of power over faith, even to the king.”

Both men refused to accept Parliament’s Act of Supremacy, which had declared that King Henry VIII was head of the Church of England. Both were imprisoned for treason in the Tower of London for months.

They were beheaded 14 days apart in 1535; Bishop Fisher was 65, More was 57.

The relic of St. John Fisher was a ring that had belonged to him. The relics of St. Thomas More were a piece of his jawbone and one half of a tooth.

The national shrine was the last stop of the tour for the relics, which earlier been displayed in Miami, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Minnesota, Denver, Phoenix and Los Angeles.

In his homily, Bishop Zubik also highlighted the heroic example of other martyrs, including St. Maximilian Kolbe, the Polish Franciscan friar who gave up his life for another man in 1941 at the Auschwitz concentration camp, and Blessed Oscar Romero, the Salvadoran archbishop and champion of the poor who was shot in the heart while celebrating Mass in 1980. Bishop Zubik also praised the witness of the 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians beheaded

by Islamic State militants on a beach in Libya in 2015.

Bishop Zubik noted that the

Little Sisters of the Poor in their service to the elderly poor and in their stand for religious freedom “are carrying the banner that we will not back off the truth that is Jesus Christ.”

He noted that the nation’s forefathers put forth religious liberty as the first freedom in the Constitution’s Bill of Rights, giving people the freedom “to worship our God as the source of our strength, and also to “live our faith outside our churches, synagogues and mosques.”

Opponents to the HHS mandate have charged that it offered exemptions to religious groups in houses of worship, but not to educational, health care and charitable ministries operated by churches, which they said are as essential to the practice of faith as prayer is.

Bishop Zubik concluded his homily by encouraging people to “pray that we may build on our ancestors of faith and our ancestors in our country and be witnesses to religious freedom.”

That witness involves praying, speaking out and acting on behalf of religious freedom, and living that freedom, he said.

The intercessions included a prayer that the president, judges and lawmakers will uphold religious freedom and protect the conscience rights of all people, and that religious-sponsored educational, healthcare and charitable outreach programs will be free to fulfill their mission.

In remarks after Communion, Archbishop Lori said he hoped the saints’ relics venerated that day “will spur all of us on to cherish, protect and use wisely the gift of freedom.”

He thanked dioceses, parishes and individual Catholics for their activities during the Fortnight for Freedom, which ran from June 21 – the vigil of the feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More – to July 4.

Archbishop Lori had celebrated the fortnight’s opening Mass in Baltimore at the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Archbishop Lori also encouraged people to pray daily for religious freedom and to use that freedom to spread the Gospel, especially the works of mercy, and to stand in solidarity with persecuted people around the world.

USCCB president says violence calls for ‘moment of national reflection’

WASHINGTON – The shooting of police officers July 7 near the end of a demonstration in Dallas to protest fatal shootings by police officers in Louisiana and Minnesota earlier in the week “calls us to a moment of national reflection,” said the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

“To all people of goodwill, let us beg for the strength to resist the hatred that blinds us to our common humanity,” said Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky, in a July 8 statement.

The archbishop described the sniper attack on the Dallas police officers “an act of unjustifiable evil.”

He said the “police are not a faceless enemy” but people offering their lives to protect others. He also noted “the suspects in crimes or routine traffic stops are not just a faceless threat” but members of families in “need of assistance, protection and fairness.”

“When compassion does not drive our response to the suffering of either, we have failed one another,” Archbishop Kurtz said.

He said the tragic shootings are reminders of the need to “place ever greater value on the life and dignity of all persons, regardless of their station in life” and hoped that in the days ahead people would look to ways of having open, honest and civil dialogue on issues of race relations, restorative justice, mental health, economic opportunity, and addressing the question of pervasive gun violence.”

Archbishop Blase J. Cupich of Chicago said: “Every corner of our land is in the grip of terror fueled by anger, hatred and mental illness and made possible by plentiful, powerful weapons.”

“It is time to break the cycle of violence and retaliation, of fear and powerlessness that puts more guns in our homes and on our streets,” he said in a statement.

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Philadelphia similarly pointed out violence is not an answer.

“The killings in Baton Rouge (Louisiana), Minnesota and Dallas have proven that by deepening the divides in our national life,” he said in a July 8 statement.

the poor and marginalized, but including the men and women of all races who put their lives on the line to protect the whole community,” he said.

Other bishops have also responded with statements to the recent fatal shootings.

Pittsburgh Bishop David A. Zubik said: “If someone does something violent, it is imperative for us to reach out to each other in kindness and with respect and refrain from blanket condemnations. We must build bridges. We must tear down walls. We must break the cycle of violence.”

He also called on people to recognize that each person is an individual. “We must not judge any person based on their race or color, their national origin, their faith tradition, their politics, their sexual orientation, their job, their vocation, their uniform.”

Bishop John E. Stowe of Lexington, Kentucky, said the shootings should cause us to ask God “to show us the way to peace and how to live in harmony with each other.”

He urged Christians to be “people of hope promoting reconciliation in a very violent world” and asked: “How much more killing must we witness before sensibly and rationally addressing the prevalence of guns, the inequalities in access to justice and the violence found in human hearts?”

Bishop Christopher J. Coyne

of Burlington, Vermont, and Episcopal Bishop Thomas Ely of Vermont issued a joint statement: “We value the hard work and faithful commitment of those entrusted with public safety in communities throughout Vermont and beyond,” the prelates said. “Those who serve the public in dangerous situations are to be commended for their service. Violence directed against police officers in the line of duty has no place in our society.”

“At the same time,” they added, “we deplore the sin of racism that so often manifests itself in acts of prejudice, discrimination and violence toward people of color in our country. This too has no place in our society.”

Here are excerpts from other bishops’ statements issued about the shootings: Archbishop Robert J. Carlson of St. Louis: “Our nation is in considerable pain as we continue to witness the toll of violence and intolerance on the people of God. On too many mornings over the past several weeks, we have awakened to fresh tragedy and renewed horror (over shootings in Orlando, Florida; Louisiana and Minnesota; and now Dallas).

Already, dangerously irresponsible voices are calling for more hate and violent retribution, adding darkness upon darkness. We stand with the church, all Christians, members of all

faiths, and people of goodwill in calling for love, peace, justice and reconciliation. … Only in the total and unyielding love of God can true and lasting peace be found.”

Archbishop Gustavo GarciaSiller of San Antonio: “The families and colleagues of those killed and injured (in Dallas) are foremost in our thoughts at this time of heartbreak and profound sadness. We stand in solidarity with the peacemakers and those who risk their lives daily to ensure our safety. We collectively mourn as a country. The inexplicable violence we have experienced the past few days – from Dallas to Minnesota to Louisiana to Orlando – have sown seeds of mistrust and enmity between people and groups that threaten to tear the very fabric of our society apart. It may appear ironic that in this Jubilee Year of Mercy called by Pope Francis, evil seems to have currently gained the upper hand. Our nation has been buffeted by so much tragedy recently that we might feel overwhelmed and hopeless, with many wondering ‘What’s next?’ and possessing a powerful temptation to just turn away, instead of embracing one another.

However, it is precisely at these moments that we need to turn to God … seeking the will of Our Father in deep and profound prayer and reflection.”

Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley of

Boston: “The assassination of five members of the Dallas Police Department last night was a heinous crime that is rightly condemned across our country. … These killings stood in stark contradiction to the spirit of the event, which brought hundreds of citizens to an assembly of peaceful protest in Dallas, similar to other such events around the country. The Dallas Police Department was there to provide protection for those who were peacefully exercising their constitutional right. The purpose of the protest was to raise awareness of and call attention to a problem which cuts across the country. We are now in the second consecutive summer of turmoil linked to the deaths of African-American men in circumstances which often cast a pall over some methods of law enforcement. Each case must be evaluated on its merits and generalized statements often risk being mistaken. But to deny the existence of a problem is to miss an opportunity to address it. … The means and methods of addressing the problem will require the best of our civil servants and the best of our citizens.”

Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston: “The shooting of police officers in Dallas last night at the conclusion of a demonstration by peaceful protesters is deeply distressing. I pray for the souls of those who were killed and for their families as well as for those wounded and their loved ones and for all the citizens of Dallas. Recent events of violence against African-Americans by police in Minnesota and Louisiana are most concerning and these tragedies call for our prayer for healing and for change. It seems as though at times our hearts are stony and paralyzed. We need God’s spirit of mercy to melt them and reopen our hearts to the beauty of human life and to rebuilding human communities.”

Be known for your love, pope tells people of Armenia

GYUMRI, ARMENIA – Acts of love and kindness must be a Christian’s “calling card,” the characteristic that identifies them more than anything, Pope Francis told Catholics in northern Armenia.

Traveling June 25 to Gyumri, a city with a significant Catholic population and one still bearing the scars of an earthquake almost three decades ago, Pope Francis once again praised the steadfast faith of the Armenian people.

Thanking God for all that had been rebuilt since the 1988 earthquake, the pope also asked the region’s people to consider what they are called to build today and, more importantly, how they are called to build it.

Celebrating the only public Mass scheduled for his threeday visit to predominantly Orthodox Armenia, Pope Francis told thousands of people in Gyumri’s Vartanants Square that memory, faith and merciful love must be the foundations of their lives.

The joy that comes from encountering Christ, he said, “renews our life, makes us free and open to surprises, ready and available for the Lord and for others.”

The exercise of charity renews and rejuvenates the church, he said.

“Concrete love is the Christian’s calling card; any other way of presenting ourselves could be misleading and even unhelpful,” he said, because Christians

are called to be known by their love.

Pope Francis urged the Armenian people to continue on the path of dialogue and respect, especially among members of the Armenian Catholic and Armenian Apostolic churches.

During his stay in Armenia, the pope was the houseguest of Catholicos Karekin II, the patriarch of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The catholicos was present for the pope’s celebration of Mass, a gesture the pope was scheduled to reciprocate the next day in Yerevan.

At the beginning of Gyumri Mass, Catholicos Karekin recalled how, during the Soviet period, many churches in Armenia

were closed or destroyed. The Armenian Apostolic Cathedral of the Seven Holy Wounds in Gyumri became an ecumenical place of worship with different areas of the church hosting services for the Armenian Apostolic, Catholic and Eastern Orthodox communities.

After Mass, Pope Francis invited the catholicos to join him in the popemobile. They toured the square, both giving the people their blessings.

The need to overcome divisions among Christians and to work for peace in the world was given even greater attention

by Pope Francis and Catholicos Karekin during an evening prayer service back in Yerevan.

In the capital’s Republic Square, where crowds had gathered while the sun was still hot, the pope and patriarch processed in together, walking side by side and blessing the people.

They stopped to shake hands with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan.

Pope Francis told the people that he and the catholicos, like all those committed to Christian unity, “look confidently toward the day when by God’s help we shall be united around the altar of Christ’s sacrifice in the fullness of eucharistic communion.”

“Let us pursue our journey with determination,” he said.

“Indeed, let us race toward our full communion!”

In working and praying for Christian unity, the pope said, churches are not looking for “strategic advantages” or ways to promote their own interests.

“Rather, it is what Jesus requires of us and what we ourselves must strive to attain with good will, constant effort and consistent witness” in order to fulfill “our mission of bringing the Gospel to the world.”

Following Christ’s example, the pope said, “we are called to find the courage needed to abandon rigid opinions and personal interests in the name of the love that bends low and bestows itself, in the name of the humble love that is the blessed oil of the Christian life, the precious spiritual balm that heals, strengthens and sanctifies.”

Together, he said, Christians must work and pray for peace,

defending the persecuted – including Christians in the Middle East – but also promoting reconciliation.

Ending a day that began at Armenia’s genocide memorial, Pope Francis prayed that Armenia and Turkey would embark on a new process of reconciliation and that peace would finally come to Nagorno-Karabakh, an enclave in Azerbaijan.

The ethnic Armenian majority of Nagorno-Karabakh voted in 1988 to unify with Armenia.

Fighting ensured and continued until a cease-fire was reached in 1994, although the enclave’s status was never fully resolved.

Sporadic fighting has occurred since, most recently in early April.

In his talk, Catholicos Karekin claimed Azerbaijan started the latest wave of violence with military exercises on the border.

But the patriarch cast his gaze wider, welcoming refugees from Syria and Iraq – nations that traditionally had strong Armenian Christian communities.

“With hope in God, they wait for peaceful days to arrive in their native lands,” Catholicos Karekin said.

“May our merciful Lord cleanse the world from the tragedies of evil and grant peace and protection,” he prayed, adding hopes that the biblical prophecy would come true: “They shall beat their swords into plowshares, their spears into pruning hooks, nations shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”

U.S. and Spanish journalists will lead Vatican press office

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis named two experienced journalists – including its first female vice director – to lead the Vatican press office.

Greg Burke, a native of St. Louis, succeeds Italian Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, who retires after 10 years as head of the Vatican press office, the Vatican announced July 11.

Spanish journalist Paloma Garcia Ovejero fills in Burke’s spot as vice director.

Burke served as special communications adviser in the Vatican’s Secretariat of State starting in 2012 before he was named by Pope Francis as the vice director of the press office

last December.

A graduate of Columbia University’s school of journalism, Burke spent 24 of his past 28 years based in Rome as a journalist – with the National Catholic Register, Time magazine and the Fox News network.

The middle child of six, Burke grew up in St. Louis Hills and went to Jesuit-run St. Louis University High School. He is a numerary member of Opus Dei. Msgr. Dario Vigano, prefect of the Vatican’s Secretariat of Communications, paid tribute to Father Lombardi’s 10 years of service at the press office.

Speaking to journalists July 11, Msgr. Vigano praised Father Lombardi’s professional work and his “ecclesial vision”

of the church.

Born in northern Italy near Turin in 1942, Father Lombardi was named program director of Vatican Radio in 1990 and general director of the Vatican television center, CTV, in 2001.

During the reorganization of Vatican offices under Pope Benedict XVI, Father Lombardi was appointed general director of the radio in 2005 and head of the Vatican press office in 2006, while continuing to lead CTV. Before his retirement in 2013, Pope Benedict named Msgr. Vigano the new director of CTV. Father Lombardi retired as head of Vatican Radio in February this year when the Secretariat for Communications took over the general administration

of the radio.

Garcia Ovejero, who studied journalism in Spain and earned a masters degree in management strategies and communications at New York University, worked as the Italy and Vatican correspondent for Spanish radio broadcaster Cadena COPE. “For me it’s an honor, it’s a service and it’s another way of serving the church. But it is the same church and, in some way, the same type of work: to proclaim the Good News and to transmit faithfully and with dignity the pope’s message,” Garcia Ovejero told Catholic News Service.

The Spanish journalist downplayed her role as the first female vice director of the press office, saying that the first

women who served the church “were the ones who found the empty tomb and proclaimed the Resurrection to the apostles.”

“I am in no way the first woman. The first woman above all in the church, in the Vatican and in the press office is the Virgin Mary,” she told CNS. The Vatican announced that Garcia Ovejero, a native of Madrid, and Burke will begin their respective roles Aug. 1.

In Washington, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, congratulated all three and thanked Father Lombardi for helping to “spread the Gospel throughout the world across two pontificates.”

Retired Pope Benedict XVI says he ‘feels protected’ by Pope Francis

VATICAN CITY – In his first public address in almost a year, retired Pope Benedict XVI expressed his sincere gratefulness to Pope Francis, saying that his goodness “from the first moment of your election, in every moment of my life here, touches me deeply.”

“More than the beauty found in the Vatican Gardens, your goodness is the place where I live; I feel protected,” Pope Benedict said June 28.

Pope Benedict also conveyed his hope that Pope Francis would continue to “lead us all on this path of divine mercy that shows the path of Jesus, to Jesus and to God.” Pope Francis led a Vatican celebration for the 65th anniversary of Pope Benedict’s priestly ordination. The two were joined by the heads of Vatican offices and congregations and several guests, including a delegation from the Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

Those gathered gave Pope Benedict a standing ovation as he made his way into the Clementine Hall and took his seat to the right of the pope’s chair.

A few minutes later, Pope Francis entered the hall and made a beeline for his predecessor, who respectfully removed his zucchetto before greeting him. Pope Francis has made no

secret of his admiration for the retired pontiff, often comparing him to a “wise grandfather at home.”

During his return flight to Rome from Armenia June 26, Pope Francis praised Pope Benedict for “protecting me and having my back with his prayers.”

Recalling Pope Benedict’s promise of obedience to his successor in the days leading up to the conclave, Pope Francis said he had heard that some people have been “sent away”

by the retired pontiff after complaining “about this new pope.”

“If (the report) isn’t true, it is well-founded, because this man is like that: a man of his word, a righteous man!” Pope Francis exclaimed.

Speaking at the anniversary celebration, Pope Francis praised Pope Benedict’s life of priestly service to the church and recalled his writings on Simon Peter’s response to “Jesus’ definitive call: ‘Do you love me?’”

“This is the hallmark dominating an entire life spent in priestly service and of the true theology that you have defined – not by chance – as ‘the search for the beloved.’ It is this that you have always given witness to and continue to give witness to today,” he said.

Even in retirement, he said, Pope Benedict continues to serve the church and “truly contributes with vigor and wisdom to its growth” from the “little ‘Mater Ecclesiae’ monastery in the Vatican.”

The monastery, Pope Francis continued, is the complete opposite of those “forgotten corners” society often assigns to those who have reached old age.

Instead, like the Portiuncola where St. Francis spent his final days in prayer, the Mater Ecclesiae monastery “has become a ‘Franciscan’ place that emanates tranquility, peace, strength, faithfulness, maturity, faith, dedication and loyalty which does so much good for me and gives strength to me and to the whole church,” Pope Francis said.

Congratulating his predecessor, Pope Francis expressed his hope that Pope Benedict “would continue to feel the hand of the merciful God that sustains him” and that he may “experience and give witness to God’s love.”

When Pope Francis finished speaking, Pope Benedict

clasped his hands together and signaled his thanks to the pope.

With a bit of effort, he rose to his feet and stretched out his arms to embrace Pope Francis.

After short speeches by Cardinal Gerhard Muller, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Cardinal Angelo Sodano, dean of the College of Cardinals, the retired pontiff slowly stood up once again to express his gratitude.

Despite his frailty, Pope Benedict vividly recalled his ordination 65 years ago, remembering a Greek word a priest ordained with him wrote on the remembrance card of his first Mass: “Eucharistomen” (“We give you thanks”).

“I am convinced that this word, in its many dimensions, has already said everything that can be said in this moment,” the retired pope said.

The word “eucharistomen,” he added, can bring everyone closer toward that “new dimension” of thanksgiving given by Christ, who transformed the cross, sufferings and the evils of the world “into grace and blessing.”

“We want to insert ourselves in this grace of the Lord and thus truly receive the newness of life and help in the transubstantiation of the world. May it be a world not of death but of life, a world in which love has overcome death,” he said.
