Finding fun, deepening faith

Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2017 is Jan. 29 - Feb. 4.

Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members.

Voice from the Valley

FOR LIFE! As he was making his rounds locking up the church after the evening Mass, a custodian noticed what looked like a plastic laundry basket sitting between the interior and exterior doors of the entrance. Looking closely, to his great surprise, he saw that the basket held a tiny newborn baby. Scooping up the basket and its precious cargo, he hurriedly headed for the warmth of the sacristy and the help of the priest. Carefully unwrapping the precious package, they found the baby to be a boy.

They provided physical help for the infant’s well being by calling emergency responders. They also provided spiritual help.

While they waited, the priest baptized the newborn, giving him, by water and the Holy Spirit, the gift of new life, the life of grace, that is, a share in God’s own life of intimate love, making him a child of God. Can you imagine being that custodian and his surprise? You may have heard about this true story. The custodian’s name is Nathan Leonhardt. The priest is Father John Ubel. The church is St. Paul’s, the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. And the baby, he has a name too, given at his baptism; he is Nathan John.

This January we recall the horrendous Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, and we pray and act for an end to abortion, to women choosing abortion, to its being considered legal, and an end to the abortion industry. The state March for Life is scheduled for January 22 at the State Capitol. The National March For Life is scheduled for Jan. 27 in Washington, D.C. You know, we bishops get mail asking us to do something about abortion. Here are two examples I received this week.

All U.S. Catholic bishops received a letter from Dr. Richard Stith, professor, the former director of the Program in Biomedical Ethics at St. Louis University School of Medicine, and recipient of six Fulbright fellowships. He writes: “Your Excellency, the great prayer for life called for by St. John Paul II is still urgently needed … With a respect life prayer said in Mass petitions each Sunday, children in the womb would be saved right from inside our churches … For strong marriages and family life and for the protection of all human life from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death we pray to the Lord.”

The second example is a letter signed by someone with as many letters after their name as Dr. Stith. This letter was signed

“I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion because it is a war against the child.”

-St. Teresa of Kolkata simply SA. SA wrote: “There are two issues: It is hard to give birth to a baby not wanted. Are we showing people a viable alternative…? Second, I travel a bit. I am surprised by how many Catholic Churches I attend that don’t pray for an end to abortion during the intercessory prayers…The first and biggest prayer we must make is about this issue [abortion].”

They’re right. We must pray and act. We must make alternatives to abortion accessible. So, this January, I hope you will join in both prayer and action to do all you can to end abortion. Be sure to include in the daily prayer of the faithful a prayer for life: for marriage and family and an end to abortion and physician-assisted suicide.

Keep in contact with your state and federal elected officials.

Join the marches for life. Do what you can to help others understand why we respect life.

Speak up so people can understand. Speak like Mother Teresa did at the National Prayer Breakfast in 1994: “I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion because it is a war against the child, a direct killing of the innocent child, murder by the mother herself.

And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love and we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts. Jesus gave even his life to love us. So, the mother who is thinking of abortion should be helped to love, that is, to give until it hurts her plans, or her free time, to respect the life of her child. The father of that child, whoever he is, must also give until it hurts. By abortion, the mother does not learn to love but kills even her own child to solve her problems.

And by abortion, the father is told that he does not have to take any responsibility at all for the child he has brought into the world. That father is likely to put other women into the same trouble. So abortion just leads to more abortion. Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want. This is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.”

How fortunate for Nathan John that his mother chose life – not abortion – and entrusted him to Mother Church by leaving him at the door of St. Paul’s Cathedral where he would find both physical and spiritual help.

Let us pray for him and for his mother. May he find a loving home. May God aid our ongoing efforts as we pray and act in support of life, bringing to all people mercy and love, hope and peace.

DAA kickoff event draws people from around the diocese Video and announcement of the appeal will come to parishes Feb. 4-5

CROOKSTON, MINN. – Pastors, parish staff members and DAA captains from parishes throughout the Diocese of Crookston attended a kickoff event for the 2017 Diocesan Annual Appeal.

The event was held Jan. 19 at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. It included a presentation from Our Sunday Visitor, prayer with Bishop Michael J. Hoeppner and a dinner where a preview of the 2017 DAA video was shown. The event was sponsored by Our Sunday Visitor.

The DAA kickoff is an annual event to prepare and inspire parish leaders prior to the appeal. The theme for the 2017 appeal is “Be Thankful!”

“Bishop Hoeppner suggested it to us during an early conversation about the focus of this year’s DAA materials,” said Reathel Giannonatti, JD, Director of the Office of Stewardship and Development. “He has been so pleased with the response to the Year of Mercy and all the good things that are happening in the Diocese of Crookston that we decided to use gratitude as a theme.”

The kickoff event featured an afternoon presentation from Our Sunday Visitor. Jim Tidabeck, Linda Kimmel, and Frank Grimes spoke to attendees about Sunday offering strategies and ways to increase parishioner engagement.

about the science and art of stewardship and how that can positively affect parishioners’ commitment to regular offertory contributions,” Giannonatti said prior to the presentation.

“Our Sunday Visitor’s purpose is to support our parishes, they speak our language and are interested in our success. My hope is that our guests will take something home that they can incorporate into their own parish stewardship programs.”

Giannonatti said she believes the presentation will have a positive impact on the diocesan level appeal as well.

“When Catholics take ownership of caring for their parish and its ministries, they also care about their church at a diocesan level and so in turn, will feel better and more confident in supporting the DAA.”

The representatives from Our Sunday Visitor shared best practices for increasing parishioner engagement and contributions, and how they can help conduct simple programs that can have a big impact on a parish. They also discussed online giving, mobile apps parishes can use to connect with parishioners, strategies for offering envelopes and a program for increasing offertory collections as a result of encouraging stewardship within a parish.

Tidabeck emphasized the importance of knowing the mission of a parish and making sure that all parishioners know it as well. He also challenged pastors and lay people alike to invite someone to be involved with the parish in some capacity each month. He said personal invitations have a huge impact.

Candidates and catechumens from parishes across the Diocese of Crookston along with their sponsors, friends and families will gather to celebrate these rites with Bishop Michael J. Hoeppner at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

These rites mark the beginning of the period of final, more intense preparation for the sacraments of initiation, which will be celebrated during the Easter Vigil throughout the diocese.

Please come support those seeking to join the Catholic Church.

Kimmel discussed ideas for offertory envelopes and shared the options available through Our Sunday Visitor.

Grimes spoke about the fast growth of communication and information gathering through mobile devices. He emphasized the importance of having a strong, up-to-date website. He also spoke about the advantages of mobile apps for communicating with parishioners and ways to use technology to help advance the mission of a parish.

Father George Noel is pastor at St. Stephen’s, Stephen; St. Rose of Lima, Argyle; and Assumption, Florian. He found the presentation to be insightful.

“A program like this has a money component to it, but it isn’t really about money. It’s a

call to follow Jesus in service,” he said.

Father Noel likes to ask people if they would care if their parish closed, and when they answer “yes” he asks them why they would care.

“If you can [explain why], we can hopefully help other people see that importance in their lives.”

During the dinner, the 2017 DAA video that focuses on the youth of the diocese was shown. It will be available for viewing in all parishes on the weekend of Feb. 4-5 prior to the commitment weekend of Feb. 11-12.

Near the close of the event, Bishop Hoeppner thanked the pastors and DAA captains for their work in parishes promoting the Diocesan Annual Appeal.

“Our diocesan appeal is a success story because of you and so again, we sincerely thank you,” he said. “We are very appreciative of your efforts. I know that you do it because of your relationship with Jesus.”

Before offering a final blessing, he said, “I thank you sincerely as your bishop here ... you’re sharing of your wealth so beautifully in your parish families. Let’s make this year, this new annual appeal a success. We put that in the hands of God and in your hands.

May Christ indeed continue to be your wealth that you might know how to share in the power of his resurrection.”

Catholics, it’s time to come to the Capitol!

This year, the bishops of Minnesota are hosting an exciting event in St. Paul on March 9 called Catholics at the Capitol.

With critical issues such as the legalization of assisted suicide and persistent family poverty at stake, Catholics concerned with life and human dignity cannot afford to miss it.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? Catholics at the Capitol is much more than a typical “Day on the Hill,” which provides advocacy opportunities but can lack opportunities for deeper formation. It is also more than a seminar or study day, which offers instruction but no clear way of translating it into action.

Catholics at the Capitol takes the best of both approaches, gathering Minnesota Catholics together to be informed and inspired about our Church’s social teaching, and then providing them with an immediate opportunity to live that out in a powerful and concrete way.

For every Catholic who says that she does not communicate with legislators because she does not know what to say or do, Catholics at the Capitol is an opportunity to demystify legislative advocacy and experience it firsthand.

WHY NOW? Catholics at the Capitol was created first and foremost to protect life and human dignity.

There are many challenges currently facing our state: the push to legalize assisted suicide threatens the vulnerable; many kids lack true educational choices and opportunities; and too many families are trapped

in a cycle of poverty. These are just a few of the many difficult policy decisions facing Minnesota. Catholics at the Capitol will give Minnesota Catholics an easy, yet effective, way to weigh in on these matters.

But beyond simply influencing important legislative decisions, the bishops of Minnesota hope Catholics at the Capitol fosters a renewed commitment to missionary discipleship through faithful citizenship, where we work in service to those at the peripheries of society.

It’s an investment to help Minnesota Catholics obtain the tools and build the relationships to work for the common good in our corner of the vineyard.

WHY ME? You are called to love your

neighbor. And, as Pope Francis reminds us, politics is one of the highest forms of charity because it serves the common good.

In fact, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation.

As the U.S. bishops state in “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship,” “[T] he obligation to participate in political life is rooted in our baptismal commitment to follow Jesus Christ and to bear Christian witness in all we do.”

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “It is necessary that all participate, each according to his position and role, in promoting the common good. This obligation is inherent in the dignity of the human person. ... As far as possible citizens should take an active part in public life” (nos. 1913-1915).

DOES ALL THIS REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE? Your legislators are elected to serve you, their constituents. It’s their job to find out what your concerns are, and do their best to represent you in St. Paul. But you can help by ap-

proaching them and identifying challenges and solutions that work to the benefit of all Minnesotans.

Whether or not you’ve spoken to your legislators before, they’ll be happy to meet you and hear your concerns. Meeting your lawmakers in person at Catholics at the Capitol is a great way to start a relationship with them, so that the next time you get in touch (for instance, in the middle of the legislative session with a critical vote on a key issue coming up), a connection has already been established.

What’s more, Catholics at the Capitol will offer programming that will inform you about the key issues and equip you to influence your lawmakers. We’ll make sure you have an enjoyable and impactful visit to the Capitol! And be not afraid – unless you are a district leader or feel passionate to speak about one of our advocacy issues, you need not speak during meetings. Your presence alone speaks volumes.

This is our moment. Let’s go!

Reflecting on a pilgrim’s way, a bishop and his iPhone I’m in the process of rereading a spiritual classic from the Russian Orthodox tradition: “The Way of a Pilgrim”.

This little text, whose author is unknown to us, concerns a man from mid-nineteenth century Russia who found himself deeply puzzled by St. Paul’s comment in first Thessalonians that we should “pray unceasingly.” How, he wondered, amidst all of the demands of life, is this even possible? How could the Apostle command something so patently absurd?

His botheration led him, finally, to a monastery and a conversation with an elderly spiritual teacher who revealed the secret. He taught the man the simple prayer that stands at the heart of the Eastern Christian mystical tradition, the so-called “Jesus prayer.” “As you breathe in,” he told him, say, ‘Lord Jesus Christ,’ and as you breathe out, say, ‘Have mercy on me.’”

When the searcher looked at him with some puzzlement, the elder instructed him to go back to his room and pray these words a thousand times. When the younger man returned and announced his successful com-

pletion of the task, he was told, “Now go pray it ten thousand times!” This was the manner in which the spiritual master was placing this prayer on the student’s lips so that it might enter his heart and into the rhythm of his breathing in and out, and finally become so second nature to him that he was, consciously or unconsciously, praying it all the time, indeed praying just as St. Paul had instructed the Thessalonians.

In the power of the Spirit, the young man then set out to wander through the Russian forests and plains, the Jesus prayer perpetually on his lips. The only object of value that he had in his rucksack was the Bible, and with the last two rubles in his possession,

he purchased a beat-up copy of the Philokalia, a collection of prayers and sayings from the Eastern Orthodox tradition. Sleeping outdoors, fending largely for himself, relying occasionally on the kindness of strangers, reading his books and praying his prayer, he made his way. One day, two deserters from the Russian army accosted him on the road, beat him unconscious and stole his two treasures. When he came around and discovered his loss, the man was devastated and wept openly: how could he go on without food for his soul?

Through a fortuitous set of circumstances, he managed to recover his lost possessions, and when he had them once again, he hugged them to his chest,

gripping them so hard that his fingers practically locked in place around them.

I would invite you to stay with that image for a moment. We see a man with no wealth, no power, no influence in society, no fame to speak of, practically no physical possessions – but clinging with all of his might and with fierce protectiveness to two things whose sole purpose is to feed his soul. Here’s my question for you: What would you cling to in such a way? What precisely is it, the loss of which would produce in you a kind of panic? What would make you cry, once you realized that you no longer had it? And to make the questions more pointed, let’s assume that you were on a desert island or that you, like the Russian pilgrim, had no resources to go out and buy a replacement. Would it be your car? Your home?

Your golf clubs? Your computer? To be honest, I think for me it might be my iPhone. If suddenly I lost my ability to make a call, my contacts, my music, my GPS, my maps, my email, etc., I would panic – and I would probably cry for sheer joy once

I had the phone back, and my fingers would close around it like a claw. What makes this confession more than a little troubling is that, ten years ago, I didn’t even own a cell phone. I lived my life perfectly well without it, and if you had told me then that I would never have one, it wouldn’t have bothered me a bit.

What I particularly love about the pilgrim is that he was preoccupied, not about any of the passing, evanescent goods of the world, but rather about prayer, about a sustained contact with the eternal God. He didn’t care about the things that obsess most of us most of the time: money, power, fame, success. And the only possessions that concerned him were those simple books that fed his relationship to God. Or to turn it around, he wasn’t frightened by the loss of any finite good; but he was frightened to death at the prospect of losing his contact with the living God. So what would you cling to like a desperate animal? What loss would you fear? What do you ultimately love?

Magical phrases to benefit your marriage from Pope Francis Many years ago I knew a couple who, like most couples when they get married, were so in love. During their dating and engagement he would send her notes and she would surprise him at work with his favorite soup for lunch. They went on long walks talking about all sorts of things and they regularly told each other “I love you” or “you are so special.” On their wedding day they were beaming with joy as they celebrated the beginning of the Sacrament of Matrimony and pledged their lives to each other. The arrival of children was seen as a blessing from God and their births brought the couple even closer together. Years passed and the couple were diligent in their role as parents and shared in the celebration of each new event in the lives of their children. But, as the children grew up and left the home this couple felt a sense of emptiness and even loneliness when they thought of their life with each other but without their children in the home. “What has happened to our marriage?” they asked to which they responded, “I guess we lost the ‘magic’ of our early love.”

This type of scenario is not unique to this couple. Some couples become so focused

PRAYING WITH THE FAMILY

on the loving responsibility of being parents that their responsibility as a married couple becomes forgotten. These couples experience love for each other through their mutual love for their children, but the direct love between husband and wife can slowly atrophy and weaken.

For some, the little frustrations with their spouse grow bigger but are never addressed because the mutual love for their children works as an ointment that heals the wound created by their spousal frustrations. But keep in mind that spouses need to always be attentive to the love they share as wife and husband so that they directly share God’s love with each other and, now quoting Pope Francis, so that they can be “…the icon of God’s love …”

Pope Francis used the above phrase to refer to marriage in his General Audience on April

2, 2014. He went on to describe the beauty and mystery of marriage in God’s plan while also describing the frustration and even anger that can develop between a husband and wife. As the Holy Father explains, “They [the married couple] argue, this is how it is, there is always arguing in marriage, sometimes the plates even fly.” “Plates flying” is not a phrase we regularly hear from a pope! But then he shares a wisdom that has been true over the ages. He states, “The secret is that love is stronger than the moment when there is arguing, and therefore I always advise spouses: do not let a day when you have argued end without making peace. Always!”

This is a great pastoral insight from the Holy Father, one that I suspect he developed by talking with couples about the joys and frustrations of married life. The advice given by Pope

Francis about not ending a day without peace is a great way to keep the magic alive in your marriage. He goes on to list “three magic phrases” that all couples should employ in their marriage: “May I,” “thank you” and “sorry.” These truly are wonderful things for married couples to say to each other.

Some spouses take each other for granted and do not make the effort to say these “magic phrases” and, over time, they grow distant from the love of God in their marriage. The couple I described at the beginning of this column did not even realize that they were taking their sacramental marriage for granted because they were experiencing love in their home through the mutual love they shared for their children.

But when their children were gone from their daily lives so were the daily opportunities for sharing love through their children. They had to relearn how to share love directly with each other.

To keep marriage as an “icon of God’s love” the married couple must attend to the love that they are to share with each other and not merely share the love that they have for their children. There are many ways to share this love. Use the “magic

phrases” with each other every time you can. The pope also suggests something that I have brought up in previous columns (It is always nice to have a pope backing up your advice!), pray for each other to preserve the bond of marital love. Pope Francis writes, “When the husband prays for his wife and the wife prays for her husband, that bond becomes strong; one praying for each other.” I have suggested one further step – also pray with each other.

The pope uses the term “magic phrases” for marriage but he and the Church know that the heart of marriage is not magic but mystery. At the heart of Catholic marriage is the love of God and the great mystery of marriage is the union of the husband and wife with God in the sacrament, a union that is part of God’s plan to reveal to the world the great love God has for each of us.

If you are married, follow the pope’s advice and pray for (and with) each other and if you are single, pray for all married couples. Pray for couples so that they may keep their love alive, that they never lose “the magic” of their marital sacrament, and that they can continue to be living icons of God’s love.

The words of Robert Kennedy as a belated tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. I am writing this column on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It will be long past by the time this issue reaches you. Yet, given the violence and discord within our nation I felt it appropriate to print the words spoken by Robert F. Kennedy on April 5, 1968, the day after a sniper took King’s life and just two months before Kennedy’s own assassination.

The speech is titled “The Mindless Menace of Violence” and remains a profound message for all of us these 48 plus years later.

This is a time of shame and sorrow. It is not a day for politics. I have saved this one opportunity to speak briefly to you about this mindless menace of violence in America which again stains our land and every one of our lives.

It is not the concern of any one race. The victims of the violence are black and white, rich and poor, young and old, famous and unknown. They are, most important of all, human beings whom other human beings loved and needed.

No one – no matter where they live or what they do – can be certain who will suffer from

some senseless act of bloodshed. And yet it goes on and on.

Why? What has violence ever accomplished? What has it ever created? No martyr’s cause has ever been stilled by his assassin’s bullet. No wrongs have ever been righted by riots and civil disorders.

A sniper is only a coward, not a hero, and an uncontrolled, uncontrollable mob is only the voice of madness, not the voice of the people.

Yet we seemingly tolerate a rising level of violence that ignores our common humanity.

We calmly accept newspaper reports of civilian slaughter in far off lands. We glorify killing

on movie and television screens and call it entertainment. We make it easy for people of all shades of sanity to acquire the weapons and ammunition they desire.

Too often we honor swagger and bluster and the wielders of force; too often we excuse those who are willing to build their own lives on the shattered dreams of others.

There is another kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions; indifference and inaction and slow decay.

This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons re-

lations between people because their skin has different colors.

This is a slow destruction of a child by hunger, and schools without books and homes without heat in the winter.

We learn, at the last, to look at our neighbors as aliens, people with whom we share a city, but not a community, men and women bound to us in common dwelling, but not in common effort.

We learn to share only a common fear - only a common desire to retreat from each other – only a common impulse to meet disagreement with force.

For all this there are no final answers.

When you teach a person to hate and fear their neighbor; when you teach that person is a lesser person because of their color or their beliefs or the policies they pursue; when you teach that those who differ from you threaten your freedom or your job or your family, then you also learn to confront others not as fellow citizens but as enemies – to be met not with cooperation but with conquest,

to be subjugated and mastered.

Our lives on this planet are too short and the work to be done too great to let this spirit of violence flourish any longer in our land.

Of course we cannot banish it with a program, nor with a resolution by Congress.

But we can perhaps remember – even if only for a time – that those who live with us are our brothers & sisters, that they share with us the same short movement of life, that they seek – as we do – nothing but the chance to live out their lives in purpose and happiness, winning what satisfaction and fulfillment they can.

Surely this bond of common faith, this bond of common goal, can begin to teach us something.

Surely we can learn, at least, to look at those around us as fellow human beings and surely we can begin to work a little harder to bind up the wounds among us and to become in our hearts brothers and sisters and countrymen once again.

MCCM students attend national conference

Around 30 students from Moorhead area campuses spent 40 hours on a bus going to and from San Antonio. They joined almost 13,000 peers from around the world for SEEK2017, a conference for Catholic college students that was held Jan. 3-7.

The biennial conference is sponsored by the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS). According to the organization, nearly 53,000 people have attended FOCUS events since the first National Conference was held in 1999.

Attendees of this year’s event came from more than 500 college campuses, including several from outside the United States.

“The speakers spoke of our beauty, our worth and our genius. They talked about saving ourselves for marriage and keeping the gift of our womanhood sacred and knowing that we are strong and brave,” she said. “This changed the way I view myself and the way I view relationships with others.

It made me realize that I am always beautiful and that I am made in the image and likeness of God. I will tell myself this daily and know that I will always be enough.”

I would love it if the fruits of this conference were greater generosity in response to the radical love of Jesus Christ.”

Father Kujawa said MCCM has a solid core group of students who are moving toward being disciples, but hopes a fruit of the conference will be an expansion of students sharing their witness with fellow students.

“More than anything, the fruits of this conference can help us save more souls, which is the glory of God,” Father Kujawa said.

Van Den Eykel said her experiences at SEEK2017 have impacted her strongly.

“I was inspired to focus more on my relationships with people in my life and help them get to heaven,” she said. “During one of the talks we heard, it was spoken to us that we are on this earth to help get other people to heaven, and I did not take that truth lightly. I was inspired to invite more people to Mass and to events that MCCM puts on and also to continue to strive to grow closer to the Lord in my prayer life.”

‘Catholics at the Capitol’ aims to inspire public policy participation

The Minnesota Catholic Conference is hosting the first Catholics at the Capitol event March 9 at the St. Paul RiverCentre and State Capitol Building in St. Paul.

The event is intended to be more than an issue lobbying day, said Jason Adkins, MCC executive director. He hopes participants gain a deeper understanding of how Catholic teaching can shape their approach in the public square.

“What we need to do is inspire, engage and equip Catholics as Catholics to participate in the public policy process, and that’s what this day is meant to do,” Adkins said.

vocacy training on education, anti-poverty efforts and defense of life. All of the state’s active bishops plan to attend.

The initiative is the first of its kind for MCC, the public policy arm of the Catholic Church in Minnesota. The organization

has long participated in advocacy days including the March for Life and the annual Joint Religious Legislative Coalition Day on the Hill, but never before has it brought together people solely because of their shared Catholic faith.

“A lot of our bread-andbutter issues were covered by other advocacy coalitions or advocacy partners that we could funnel Catholics into,” Adkins said. “What changed is that not only do we need a distinctly Catholic and faith voice at the Capitol, but we [also] need to equip Catholics to engage the political process.”

After the morning program at the RiverCentre, participants will go to the State Capitol to meet in groups with their legislators. Adkins hopes that encounter is the basis for ongoing relationships between the lawmakers and constituents.

“There are so many barriers to participation in the public policy process: ‘I don’t know what to say; I don’t know who to contact,’” Adkins said. “Most Catholics don’t know who their state legislators are, so what we’re really trying to do here is not just to go and tell legislators what the Church thinks about an issue, but really help Catholics – on whatever issue they’re concerned about – be better public servants and faithful citizens.”

Adkins expects participants to be well-received by their lawmakers.

“Legislators want to hear from their constituents because they want to know what their constituents are thinking,” he said. “Sometimes issues are not on their radar, and their constituents bring those issues to their attention.

“This isn’t about pressuring legislators or imposing our will on them,” he added. “It’s actually a service to legislators … [to offer] our perspective as Catholics, as a member of a particular parish, of a particular community, about what serves the common good. And it’s definitely important for Catholics like anyone else in society to offer that perspective.”

TEC celebrates 40 years of retreats in Diocese of Crookston

MAHNOMEN, MINN. – On Jan. 15, Agassiz Valley TEC celebrated 40 years of holding retreats in the Diocese of Crookston. Around 50 people attended the Mass, dinner, program and prayer held at St. Michael’s Mahnomen.

Father Tom Friedl, pastor of St. Peter the Apostle, Park Rapids and St. Mary’s, Two Inlets, presided at the Mass celebrating the anniversary.

During his homily, Father Friedl spoke about the testimony Christians are called to give through their lives as Christ’s disciples, and the impact that testimony can have on others.

“As we gather to celebrate 40 years, we don’t know how many lives we truly touched.

Yes, there were those there only because they were going to get confirmed … but there were those who through our being there with them, through our testimony to them and with them, and through the process of the three days, came to a deeper understanding, came to a deeper faith. They’re not with us here today, but let us pray that the spirit is still there in their hearts, the spirit which we hopefully helped to bring forth,” he said. “For 40 years, the spirit has been working here in the Diocese of Crookston with remarkable people … and so we are asked to also continue to give witness by our very lives, and our world as you know needs our witness now more than ever.”

Dinner followed Mass, and a program reviewing the history of the TEC movement in the diocese.

Annette Haas of St. Peter the Apostle, Park Rapids, is the TEC Council Chair. She spoke about the fun, fellowship, prayer and relationships that happen through TEC retreats.

She talked about the impact TEC has had on people’s faith lives, saying, “for some it might have been the big thing that really started the ball rolling, for others it was something that just helped continue that relationship with the Lord and so many of us were there and watched it happen and were part of that.”

Haas concluded, saying, “I pray that all of us that are effected by the TEC movement may, in our lives, lead others to encounter Christ.”

TEC in the Diocese of Crookston Teens Encounter Christ, or TEC, was brought to the diocese in 1976 when Bishop Victor H. Balke became the sixth Bishop of the Diocese of Crookston. It is now known as Together Encounter Christ because people of various ages attend the retreats.

The three-day retreats are based on the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus, or the Paschal Mystery. Participants are encouraged to deepen their personal faith life through prayer, presentations, fun and fellowship. Each retreat is led by a team of people who have previously attended a TEC retreat.

Of course in our diocese, the actual average cost to educate a child is a much lower figure, which is shared between parishioners, parents, and fundraising efforts.

Again, I must thank those who support our schools, and for those who support the Diocesan Annual Appeal. The Appeal funds the diocesan Office of Catholic Schools, and we’re so grateful! February banquets to support 2017 Cursillo weekends regional Catholic radio station Real Presence Radio will host Dr. David Anders as keynote speaker of the upcoming annual fundraising banquets. The banquets will be Feb. 20, in Bismarck and Feb. 21, in Fargo. Dr. Anders is the host of “Called to Communion,” which airs at 1 p.m. Tuesday-Friday on Real Presence Radio. He is also the Director of the Office of Catholic Education and Lifelong Formation for the Diocese of Birmingham, Alabama.

A convert to Catholicism, Dr. Anders was raised in the Presbyterian Church and attended a Protestant college and seminary. While studying the works of John Calvin, Martin Luther, and the Protestant doctrine of “faith alone” for his Ph.D. in

All Cursillo weekends are held at Sand Hill Lake Bible Camp near Fosston.

The weekend begins on a Thursday evening and ends on a Sunday. During these three days, presentations are given by priests and laity, and the Eucharist is shared, as well as prayer.

Those with a desire to grow in their Christian lives, share their faith daily – whether at work, home, or recreation –

and develop their spirituality, should think about attending Cursillo.

Success, well-being at any cost will deceive, disappoint, pope says VATICAN CITY (CNS) – Watch out for the tempting promises and easy rewards of false gods and idols because they always lead to confusion, disappointment and even death, Pope Francis said. “We are tempted to seek even fleeting comfort, which seems to fill the emptiness of solitude and ease the exertion of believing” in God, especially in times of trouble, he said Jan. 11 during his weekly general audience. But the hope and security that come from God “never ever disappoint,” he said. “Idols always let you down” since they are figments of the imagination and not “alive and real” like God. The pope continued his series of talks on Christian hope by reflecting on Psalm 115, which warns of the false hopes and securities offered by man-made idols. While the psalmist speaks of statues made of “silver and gold,” the pope said idols also include anything people hold up as the ultimate answer to their happiness and security like money, power, success and false ideologies – all of which carry “illusions of eternity and omnipotence.”

Pope names Boston cardinal, others to Vatican congregations VATICAN CITY (CNS) – Pope Francis named Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley of Boston, who is president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, to be a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

The Vatican announced his and other papal appointments Jan. 14. The 72-year-old archbishop of Boston is one of the eight members of the Council of Cardinals who has been assisting Pope Francis with the reform of the administration of the Roman Curia, and now he joins 26 other cardinal and bishop members, and 28 consulting theologians, in advising the doctrinal congregation. ‘Stagnant’ and selfish Christians are hopeless, unable to cope, pope says VATICAN CITY (CNS) – Christians who forge ahead with hope in God have the strength to endure life’s dark moments, Pope Francis said in a morning homily. However, Christians who refuse to fight for positive changes that benefit everyone are “stagnant” and selfish, he said Jan. 17 during the Mass in the chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae. Christians who are “lazy” or “lukewarm” in the faith “have found in the church a nice parking lot” for themselves where their lives are protected “with all possible guarantees,” he said. It’s like “living in a refrigerator” that preserves things to stay just as they are, he said. “Lazy Christians,” he said, are “Christians that have no desire to move forward, Christians who do not fight for things that bring change, new things, things that would be good for everyone if these things were to change.”

Such “stationary” Christians, he said, remind him of an old saying back home warning that stagnant water is the first to go bad.

Congress urged to keep health care gains, protect life, conscience rights WASHINGTON (CNS) – The chairman of the U.S. bishops’ domestic policy committee said Jan. 18 that a repeal of the federal health care law should not take place without immediate passage of a plan that preserves people’s access to adequate health care and also protects human life, conscience rights and the poor. “Important gains brought about by the Affordable Care Act must be preserved” as millions of people now rely on the law for their health care, said Bishop Frank J. Dewane of Venice, Florida, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development.

At the same time, he said, any replacement measure also must safeguard human life from conception to natural death, protect conscience rights and provide adequate health care for immigrants, the poor and others on society’s margins. Bishop Dewane made the comments in a letter sent to members of the

U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. The U.S. bishops “supported the general goal of the law to expand medical coverage for many poor and vulnerable people,” but they “ultimately opposed the Affordable Care Act because it expanded the role of the federal government in finding and facilitating abortion and plans that cover abortion,” Bishop Dewane wrote.

U.S. abortion rate at its lowest since 1973 Supreme Court ruling WASHINGTON (CNS) – The U.S. abortion rate is down to its lowest level since the Supreme Court made abortion legal virtually on demand in 1973, and the rate is half of its early-1980s peak. According to a study issued Jan. 17 by the Guttmacher Institute, the abortion rate for U.S. women ages 15-44 is 14.6 per 1,000 in 2014, the last year for which statistics are available. The figure represents a 14 percent decline from the 2011 numbers, and less than half of the 1981 rate of 29.4 abortions per 1,000 women of childbearing age. The percentage of

pregnancies ending in abortion is down to 18.8 percent, a decline of nearly two-fifths below is 1983 peak of 30.3 percent. A statement by the Guttmacher Institute, which supports legal abortion, said the study “did not directly investigate reasons behind the declining abortion rate,” but suggested “the wave of abortion restrictions passed at the state level over the last five years” could have contributed at least in part to the decline. A Jan. 17 statement from Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life, attributed the decline to more women looking “for life-preserving solutions” because of ultrasound and other technologies that allow them to “see the child moving in the womb” and “hear the heartbeat of the unborn child,” along with knowing there are “programs available to help them with a new baby and new circumstances.”

Christian living requires constant battle with devil, pope says VATICAN CITY (CNS) – Moving closer to Christ means facing daily struggles against temptation and battling against evil, Pope Francis said. When Jesus approaches the people who have come to hear him and be healed, “the unclean spirits try to stop him, they wage war,” which is why those who seek to follow the Lord will face obstacles, too, the pope said Jan. 19 during his early morning Mass in the chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae. Looking at the day’s Gospel reading from Mark (3:7-12), the pope said it is “curious” how the passage ends with the unclean spirits shouting at Jesus, “You are the son of God,” after describing the enthusiasm and large number of people who came to see, hear and be healed by Jesus.

“This is the truth. This is the reality that each one of us feels when Jesus approaches,” he said, referring to the presence and persistence of evil.

Once a week, I help out at an afterschool center in my community. The long-standing program, which provides supervision and enrichment activities for disadvantaged children, is a place of pride for the community because it fills an important need for many struggling families and has become a valuable resource in improving the prospects for their children.

Local news periodically shows smiling kids from the center participating in special events such as planting a community garden or taking swimming lessons at the YMCA. But behind the feel-good images is a highly challenging environment in which staff members try to mentor some 200 children, most of whom have academic, social or psychological difficulties.

Constant behavior problems make it hard to accomplish much on any given day, so it’s not uncommon for frustrated staffers or volunteers to give up after only a brief time. But a core group stays. They endure the frustration, work through obstacles and celebrate incremental successes. They stay because they are true believers in the center’s mission.

Similarly, staying power is a challenge to the Christian faithful. Conflicts, wars, materialism, selfishness and an overarching secular culture threaten our ability to follow the ways of Christ. How can we hold fast to our beliefs against overwhelming opposition?

Zephaniah’s prophecy in today’s Scriptures provides the assurance we seek that Jesus’ mission will continue despite forces in this world that constantly conspire to bring it down. Speaking God’s word,

God promises that a core of true believers always will carry on, committed and living the life to which he calls us.

In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus describes that life in the beatitudes, reiterating that the faithful will be rewarded by God’s faithfulness.

It’s our only hope in this world, but it’s a great hope, and we can witness its truth in people such as the committed leaders at the after-school center. When I observe this small group patiently enduring because of their compassion and selflessness, I have to believe that they actually are a part of that remnant maintaining God’s goodness here and now.

Trump presidency receives words of hope, prayers for civility

WASHINGTON (CNS) – Words of congratulations as well as caution emerged from political and religious leaders as President Donald J. Trump was inaugurated Jan. 20.

Pope Francis sent best wishes and prayers to incoming President Trump shortly after he took the oath of office.

“I offer you my cordial good wishes and the assurance of my prayers that almighty God will grant you wisdom and strength in the exercise of your high office,” the pope’s message said.

Saying that the human family faces “grave humanitarian crises” that demand “farsighted and united political responses,” the pope said he would pray that Trump’s decisions “will be guided by the rich spiritual and ethical values that have shaped the history of the American people and your nation’s commitment to the advancement of human dignity and freedom worldwide.”

More than 860 religious, civil rights and ethnic and immigrant rights groups urged Trump to protect 740,000 people who qualify for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, known as DACA. In a Jan. 18 letter to the new president, national, state and local organizations said that DACA had become one of the country’s “most successful immigration policy initiatives ... fostering economic growth and strengthening national security.”

The letter asked Trump to continue DACA despite his promises to immediately end President Barack Obama’s executive actions on immigration.

“In order to be ‘one nation under God,’ we believe we are all called to live as true ambassadors or reconciliation, in all places and all times,” the leaders said. “We believe we need a president who transcends party politics and personal agendas in order to heal deep divisions that threaten the stability of our nation. We strongly believe that we all need to be dedicated to respectful and dignified civil discourse with those whose positions different from our own.”

The letter concluded by inviting the Trump to join them in “constant prayer that God might act in our hearts and through our actions as leaders.”

Prior to the inauguration, other faith leaders joined an ecumenical People’s Prayer Service at Metropolitan AME Church in Washington. Participants prayed for justice for marginalized communities throughout the country.

The event offered, “a vision for America that is inclusive and welcoming of all,” said United Church of Christ Bishop Dwayne Royster, political director of People Improving Communities through Organizing, PICO, National Network,

an association of faith-based organizing groups.

Bishop Royster said in a statement announcing the service that people of faith are called “to advocate for the marginalized while serving as a moral compass for the country.” He cited the need to “preserve the Affordable Care Act ... (and) to provide sanctuary to vulnerable communities and resisting inhumane policies” in announcing the service.

The Washington-based organization In Defense of Christians congratulated Trump and Vice President Mike Pence on their inauguration and urged the new administration to make the plight of Christians in the Middle East a policy priority.

The organization said Christian communities in Iraq and Syria particularly are in need of assistance to rebuild their homelands after suffering severe losses in years of war. “It is in the interests of the United States and international community to do so,” the organization said in a statement.

The organization noted that the administration of President Barack Obama declared that atrocities by the Islamic State group against Christians and other minority communities was genocide in 2016 and that such a designation affords the new administration on opportunity to ensure the “continued survival of the ancient ethnic and religious minorities of the Middle East.”

Americans enjoy because of the sacrifices of previous generations. He also offered a prayer for Trump and for the country to “recommit to care for the needy.”

Two days before the inauguration, the Ignatian Solidarity Network, a social justice education and advocacy organization based at John Carroll University in suburban Cleveland, invited Jesuit parishes, schools and universities to pray for people who fear Trump’s proposals to deport immigrants.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada offered congratulations on Trump’s inauguration and said that the partnership between the two countries built throughout history is “essential to our shared prosperity and security.”

“Together, we benefit from robust trade and investment ties, and integrated economies, that support millions of Canadian and American jobs. We both want to build economies where the middle class, and those working hard to join it, have a fair shot at success,” Trudeau’s message said.

Canada looks forward to working with Trump, his administration and the new Congress on the path to restoring middle class prosperity in both countries and to develop a safer and more peaceful world, the prime minister added.
